Abstract:Some of the major factors influencing ammonia volatilisation in a rice wheat rotation system were studied. A continuous airflow enclosure method was used to measure NH3 volatilisation in a field experiment at an agricultural college in Jiangsu Province. The five treatments comprised application rates of 0, 100, 200 or 300 kg N ha(-1) as urea, per growing season with rice straw amendment when wheat was sown, and 200 kg N ha(-1) without rice straw amendment. There were three replicates in a randomised block design. Ammonia volatilisation was measured immediately after urea application in the three consecutive years 1995 to 1997. The results show that N losses through NH3 volatilisation accounted for 4-19% of N applied during the wheat growing season and for 5-11% during the rice growing season. Ammonia volatilisation was affected significantly by soil moisture and temperature before and after fertiliser application during the wheat growing season. The ratio of volatilised NH3-N to applied N after urea application during the rice growing season was as follows: top-dressing at the onset of tillering > top-dressing at the start of the booting stage > basal fertilization. The results also show that the amount of N lost through NH3 volatilisation increased with increasing N application rate, but the ratio to applied N was not affected significantly by N application rate. Amendment with rice straw had no significant effect on NH3 volatilisation.
Effects of various fertilization regimes on abundance and activity of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria in rice-wheat cropping systems in China.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an important process in many marine and paddy ecosystems. However, few studies have reported on the contribution to the nitrogen cycle of anammox and its dynamics in rice wheat cropping systems with different fertilization regimes. Here, isotope tracing and molecular techniques were used to determine the potential rates of anammox and their association with bacterial abundance, diversity, and activity. Rice-wheat cropping systems at two sites in Jiangsu Province, China were selected and the treatments at each site were: 1) no fertilization (CM), 2) 100% chemical fertilization (CF), 3) pig manure compost plus 50% chemical fertilization (PMCF), and 4) straw plus 100% chemical fertilization (SRCF). The results revealed that anammox bacteria with high abundance were detected in both the wheat and rice seasons. The abundance of anammox in PMCF treatment was higher than that in SRCF treatment in both Changshu and Jintan. Moreover, the abundance of anammox bacteria in CF treatment was significantly higher than that in CK in Changshu. Analysis of anammox hydrazine synthase beta subunit (hzs-beta) gene sequences showed that in the rice season, the anammox bacteria Ca. Brocadia, Ca. Scalindua, and Ca. Jettenia were present. In contrast, all of the anammox hydrazine oxidase (hzo) genes were affiliated with Ca. Brocadia, suggesting that hzs genes are more representative of anammox biological diversity compared to hzo. Sequences from the PMCF treatment where affiliated with both Ca. Jettenia and Ca. Brocadia, and showed the highest diversity. Anammox activity was detected in both the wheat and rice seasons, but there were significant differences between seasons. The anammox rates were in the range 0.34 to 1.04 nmol dinitrogen gas.g(-1) dry soil.h(-1), and 3.15 to 9.62% of dinitrogen gas emissions were attributed to anammox. However, no significant difference among the fertilizer treatments for anammox activity was found in the study. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Increasing use of manure nutrients in crop production and decreasing the input of chemical fertilizers, is a promising way to achieve a more circular economy and more sustainable food systems. The integrated effects of amended composting manure with additives and a 50% substitution of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) input by amended manure N input to cropland were proved to halve ammonia (NH3) emissions from an integrate manure-cropland system. However, the accompanied impacts of these measures on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the integrate manure-cropland system have not been well quantified. Here, we examined the effects of improved manure storage and treatment and its usage at field on GHG emissions from a system perspective, based on a two-year experiment in the North China Plain (NCP). Manure storage and treatment included natural storage (NS) and composting with straw, with or without amendment by zeolite (Z) and superphosphate (SP). Manure products were applied as basal fertilizer for both crops. Results showed that CH4 was the dominant GHG source in the natural storage treatment, whereas N2O dominated in the manure composting treatments. Amending manure with straw, Z and SP stimulated 15–48 times N2O emission and decreased CH4 emissions by 82%–91% during storage and treatment. Replacement of 50% synthetic fertilizer N by manure N decreased total system GHG emissions by 25%–34%. Differences between composted manure treatments in total system GHG emissions were relatively small, although comparatively higher in amended manure treatments; however, they promoted greater soil organic carbon sink activity, resulting in no significant difference in net global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). Application of amended manure produced high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the integrated crop–manure system. The NH3 mitigation approach of replacing 50% of synthetic fertilizer N by amended manure N synergistically decreased total GHG emissions, increased system NUE and also increased the net economic benefit by 5%–11% over the 2 years of the experiment.
High-resolution Measurement of Ammonia Emissions from Fertilization of Vegetable and Rice Crops in the Pearl River Delta Region, China

Abstract:Loss of ammonia (NH3) as a result of intensive N fertilization, especially due to agronomic practices in South China, is not well characterized. To investigate mechanisms and characteristics of NH3 volatilization after urea application, an on-line monitoring system, with 30-min data resolution, was used to study vegetable and rice fields from January 2009 to September 2010. Ammonia emissions and concurrent meteorological conditions were monitored for up to 20 days after fertilization in 12 experiments. Standard recovery test results indicated that the on-line measurement system was both stable and accurate. The NH3 emission factors (EFs) related to broadcast (soil surface) basal dressing and top dressing to Brassica rapa L were 23.6% and 21.3%, respectively. The NH3 EFs from holing basal dressing and broadcasting top dressing for lettuce were 17.6% and 24.0%, respectively. The NH3 EFs for early rice in parallel broadcast basal dressing process were 10.7% and 14.2%, while in parallel top dressing process were 24.0% and 22.6%, respectively. The NH3 EFs for late rice were 15.4% and 21.0% in parallel broadcasting basal dressing process, while 13.2% and 17.6% in parallel top dressing process. Emission of NH3 from vegetable and rice fields occurred mainly in the first 2-3 weeks after fertilization. Ammonia emission flux was positively correlated with air temperature and soil temperature in the majority of the experiments. Relationships between NH3 emissions and humidity, soil moisture or wind speed were explored, which were not consistent among all tests. Ammonia emission in vegetable and rice fields was primarily associated with temperature. High-resolution data, such as those gathered in the current investigation, will contribute to a more thorough quantitative understanding of the relationship between fertilizer application, environmental conditions, and NH3 volatilization which, in turn, will improve the accuracy of atmospheric modeling on local, regional and global scales. Abstract:Optimizing the type and rate of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is an effective approach for achieving food security and minimizing environmental impacts. In this study, a ten-year in situ field experiment was conducted to evaluate the interannual responses of crop yields and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the continuous application of chemical fertilizer (CF) and partial manure application (30 %, CFM) in a paddy rice-upland wheat rotation system. The results indicated that the trends of crop yields and GHG emissions were stable over ten years, and an appropriate N rate (200/150 kg N ha -1 for rice/wheat) in the rice-wheat system had greater potential for maintaining crop yields (9.25/3.32 t ha -1 for rice/wheat) and reducing their net GHG emissions by 20.8–38.7 % in contrast to the high rate (300/225 kg N ha -1 for rice/wheat). Among CF treatments, CH 4 emissions had a negative correlation with the N rate, while N 2 O emissions were positively correlated. The CFM treatments significantly increased CH 4 emissions (37.5–112.2 %) compared to the CF treatments during the rice season, but mitigated N 2 O emissions during both the rice (55.7–58.2 %) and wheat season (32.0–48.2 %). In a comprehensive assessment of the CH 4 and N 2 O emissions in rice-wheat system, 81 % of the net GHG emissions was occurred in the rice season, and there was no significant difference between the CF and CFM at rate of 200/150 kg N ha -1 . The study suggests that partial manure application at an optimum rate can effectively mitigate GHG emissions and be beneficial for the sustainability of rice and wheat production in a paddy rice-upland wheat rotation system.

Abstract:Green manures (GM) combined with fertilizer reduction is an efficient measure to alleviate the environmental issues caused by the overapplication of chemical fertilizer. However, both the environmental and economic benefits remain unclear in coastal regions that are affected by both soil salinization and climate change. A field experiment was conducted in low-yield cropland in the Yellow River Delta to explore the effects of green manure rotation combined with fertilizer reduction on the soil environment and economic sustainability. Two GM species, Vicia villosa (HV) and Orychophragmus violaceus (OV), a traditional winter wheat (Wheat), were grown in winter, with a fallow control (Fallow). In the subsequent maize season, three fertilizer rate treatments, a full rate of 600 kg ha-1 compound fertilizer (F100), 85% of the full rate (F85), and 70% of the full rate (F70), were applied in each former treatment. The results indicated that GM return markedly increased soil total N (TN) and P (TP) before the V6 stage of maize (when maize had 6 leaves). The average TN contents of HV and OV increased by 56.9% and 38.5%, respectively, compared with that of Wheat, while the values for TP were 13.6% and 16.9%. Compared with Fallow, the maize yields of HV and OV increased by 25.6% and 13.8%, respectively, while that of Wheat decreased by 9.1%. The average partial fertilizer productivities (PFPs) for HV and OV increased by 25.3% and 14.0% compared with Fallow, while Wheat decreased by 8.9%. The PFPs for F85 and F70 increased by 19.4% and 37.7%, respectively, compared with F100. Reducing the fertilizer rate to 70% in the HV-maize rotation pattern did not reduce but increased the total net profit and rate of return. Thus, HV-maize rotation combined with 30% fertilizer reduction is suggested for sustainable agriculture in this region.
Quantification and evaluation of atmospheric ammonia emissions with different methods: A case study for the Yangtze River Delta region, China

Abstract:Abstract. To explore the effects of data and method on emission estimation, two inventories of NH3 emissions of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China were developed for 2014 based on the constant emission factors (E1) and those characterizing the agricultural processes (E2), respectively. The latter integrated the detailed information of soil, meteorology and agricultural processes, and derived the monthly information of emission factors and activity data. The total emissions were calculated at 1765 and 1067 Gg, respectively, and agricultural activities (livestock farming and fertilizer use) were estimated to contribute 74–84 % to total emissions in the two inventories. Clear differences existed in seasonal and spatial distributions of NH3 emissions. Elevated emissions were found in March and September in E2, attributed largely to the increased top dressing fertilization and to the enhanced NH3 volatilization under high temperature, respectively. Relatively large discrepancy between the methods existed in northern Yangtze River Delta areas with abundant croplands. The two inventories were evaluated through air quality modeling and available ground and satellite observation. With the estimated emissions 38 % smaller in E2, the average of simulated NH3 concentrations using E2 was 27 % smaller than that using E1 at two ground observation sites in the YRD region. At the suburban SHPD site, the simulated NH3 concentrations with E1 were generally larger than observation, and the modeling performance was largely improved indicated by the smaller NMEs when E2 was applied. In contrast, very limited improvement was found at the urban site JSPAES, as E2 failed to improve the emission estimation of local sources including transportation and residential activities. Compared to NH3, the modeling performance for inorganic aerosols was better for most cases, and the differences between the simulated concentrations with E1 and E2 were clearly smaller, at 7 %, 3 % and 12 % (relative to E1) for NH4+, SO42−, and NO3−, respectively. Regarding the satellite-derived NH3 column, application of E2 significantly corrected the overestimation in vertical column density simulation for January and October with E1, but did not improve the model performance for July. The NH3 emissions might be underestimated with the assumption of linear correlation between NH3 volatilization and soil pH for acidic soil, particularly in warm seasons. Three additional cases, i.e., 40 % abatement of SO2, 40 % abatement of NOX, and 40 % abatement of both species were applied to test the sensitivity of NH3 and inorganic aerosol concentrations to precursor emissions. Under an NH3-rich condition for most of YRD, estimation of SO2 emissions was detected to be more effective on simulation of secondary inorganic aerosols compared to NH3. Reduced SO2 would restrain the formation of (NH4)2SO4, and thereby enhance the NH3 concentrations. Besides the emissions, uncertainties existed as well in the limitations of ground and satellite observation and incomplete mechanism of gas to particle conversion applied in the model. To improve the air quality more effectively and efficiently, NH3 emissions should be substantially controlled along with SO2 and NOX in the future.

Abstract:A highly sensitive 27 MHz quartz crystal microbalance instrument with an automatic flow injection system was developed to obtain realistic minimal frequency noise (±0.05 Hz) and to obtain a stable signal baseline (±1 Hz/h) by controlling the temperature of each part in the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system using three Peltier devices with a resolution of ±0.001 °C and by optimizing the flow system to prevent fluctuation of the internal pressure of the QCM. The improved QCM with an automatic flow injection system enabled detection of small mass changes such as binding of biotin to a streptavidin-immobilized QCM with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We also applied this device to enzyme reactions of one-base elongation by DNA polymerase (Klenow fragment, KF). We immobilized dsDNAs including the protruding end of dA, dG, dT, or dC on the QCM electrode and ran complementary dNTP monomers with KF into the QCM flow cell. We could directly detect the enzymatic one-base elongation of DNA as a small mass increase, and we found the difference in the reaction rate for each monomer.
Combining deep flooding and slow-release urea to reduce ammonia emission from rice fields

Abstract:The high risk of ammonia (NH3) emission from rice fields limits the efficient and cleaner production of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Currently, little is known about the combined effects of irrigation and fertilization on NH3 emission from rice fields. Specially, the contributions of different field factors to NH3 emission and the role of the rice canopy in NH3 emission are not fully understood. This study aimed to (i) determine the best combination of irrigation and fertilization for reducing NH3 emission from rice fields and (ii) elucidate the mechanisms involved based on the data from 17 field factors. A 2-year field experiment (2017 and 2018) was performed consisting of nine treatments: the full combination of three irrigation treatments (deep flooding (DF), moderate flooding (MF), and shallow flooding (SF)) and three fertilization treatments (the control test (N0), urea (U), and slow-release urea (SU)). The results indicated that nitrogen (N) application significantly increased NH3 emission from rice fields (p < 0.05). The best practice for reducing NH3 emission was the combination of DF and SU. Surface water pH, c(NH4+), and the c(NH4+)/c(H+) ratio should be controlled at low levels to reduce NH3 emission. Ammonia emission under DF and SU decreased, largely because of the lower c(NH4+), pH, and c(NH4+)/c(H+) ratio in the surface water. According to the role of the rice canopy in NH3 emission, the rice growing season can be divided into four periods. When considering the whole rice growing season, the rice canopy was a NH3 sink. Ammonia flux in the canopy (AFluxcanopy) was low and contributed little to NH3 emission above the canopy (AEcanopy); however, it may be used as an indicator to assess rice yield potentials. Overall, the combination of DF and SU led to lower NH3 emission and higher grain yield, water productivity, and N recovery efficiency; hence, this is a promising practice for the efficient and cleaner production of rice.

Abstract:Numerous strategies for mitigating ammonia volatilization (AV) from agricultural land have been investigated with limited evaluation of their efficacy and response to differing field conditions across China. Therefore, this meta-analysis seeks to draw conclusions about AV in China, and assess the effect of crop type (wheat, maize, and rice as staple crops), climatic conditions, and soil properties on AV and variations in responses that can guide selection of appropriate strategies under different conditions. Novel analysis indicates nitrogen (NH3–N) losses of 7.62 Tg due to AV from these three crops in China. AV is 12.8 and 18.0% (95% CI) higher from maize than from wheat and rice, respectively, without N application under warm and sub-humid conditions (MM), and 13.8 and 2.8% higher under hot and humid conditions (HH). AV increases notably under HH as compared with cold and sub-arid conditions (LL) by 11.5% and 28.4% under the control treatment and application of 150 kg N ha−1, respectively in rice fields while it is most substantially under maize (52.5%) with application of 150 kg N ha−1. The ratio of change in AV between soil grades 3 and 1 (potential AV >1.0 and < 0 cmol kg−1) is significantly greater for wheat and rice (2.5%) than for maize (1.9%). The strategy of reducing N rate is more effective for maize and rice than wheat, where applying N at a rate of 150–220 kg N ha−1 to them has similar effects to applying 300 kg N ha−1 to wheat. For wheat and maize, urea should be partially substituted with organic amendments, while improved urea is the preferable N source for rice. Subsurface application has competitive efficacy, especially for maize, and higher N rates. Applying inhibitors achieves the highest AV reduction, especially with rice under various conditions, creating more actively options for future research to increase applicability.

Abstract:Harnessing an ammonia-oxidizing microbiome has become an increasingly attractive form of management for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in rice paddies; however, the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and ammonia-oxidizing microbiomes, using a nitrogen application and irrigation regime, has not been well investigated. To decipher which of (and how) the specific mmonia-oxidizing bacterial species drive the greenhouse gas CH4 and N2O emissions, a field experiment with varying nitrogen application and irrigation regimes was initiated to investigate the succession of key bacterial consortia associated with GHG emissions. The results showed that water-saving irrigation (AWD) significantly increased NO3-N and NH4+-N concentrations, compared with conventional irrigation (FDF), whereas (total nitrogen) TN was little higher in FDF (1.38 g kg−1) compared with the AWD (1.36 g kg−1). During the rice-growing season, CH4 emissions ascended speedily, and emissions peaked at maximum values of 3.32 and 4.41 ug mg−2 h−1 on day 5 in FDF and AWD irrigation regimes, respectively, and then they rapidly decreased during the midseason period, maintaining a relatively low emission rate until the rice was harvested. The patterns of N2O emission fluxes had the same tendencies with N fertilization. Putative key taxa, such as Flavobacterium, Massilia, Arenimonas, Novosphingobium, Pseudomonas, exhibited significant positive relationships with higher GHG emissions, suggesting that they make particularly obvious contributions to N2O emissions. These putative taxa should be considered when designing a high nitrogen application and irrigation strategy. As such, the nitrogen application of N180, and the irrigation regimes of water-saving irrigation, are recommended methods for N conservation and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in rice paddies.

Abstract:Agricultural management practices (AMPs) have the potential to significantly enhance crop yield, albeit with the possible side effect of escalating greenhouse gas emissions. Few studies have undertaken a comprehensive quantification of the impact of AMPs on crop production and soil GHG, particularly in identifying the optimal AMPs for rice cultivation within rice-wheat rotation system. Here, we combined data analysis and keyword search methods on 1433 individual experimental observations from 172 studies on diverse soil types in the subtropical monsoon climate zone of China to assess the impact of AMPs on rice yield, CH 4 and N 2 O emissions, total greenhouse gas emissions (TGHGE). We focused on four key AMPs: mineral N fertilizer management (including ordinary N fertilizer and slow−/controlled-release fertilizer (SCRF)), organic material management (incorporating organic fertilizer, biochar amendment, and straw return), water-saving irrigation, and no-tillage. Our result showed the rice yield ranged from 2525 to 31,196 kg ha −1 , and mineral N fertilizer and organic material management boosted rice yield by 2.84–16.19 % and 2.47–8.52 %, respectively. In terms of N 2 O emissions, biochar amendment resulted in a decrease of 13.05 %, while ordinary N fertilizer, organic fertilizer, and water-saving irrigation led to increases of 63.16 %, 136.66 %, and 37.41 %, respectively. The implementation of SCRF, water-saving irrigation, and no-tillage significantly curtailed CH 4 (6.83 %–35.91 %) and TGHGE (6.22 %–20.59 %). Conversely, organic fertilizer and straw return significantly escalated CH 4 emissions by 102.20 % and 33.64 % and TGHGE by 85.03 % and 32.40 %. Rice yield and GHG emissions are mainly influenced by variables such as soil bulk density, pH, soil organic carbon, soil texture, mean annual temperature, and total nitrogen. Our study demonstrates that the application of SCRF, water-saving irrigation, and no-tillage can effectively reduce GHG without compromising yield. Abstract:Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilizers are often used in China, and a large proportion of the N can be lost as ammonia (NH3). However, quantifying the NH3 emission from paddy fields is always affected by large uncertainties due to different measuring methods and other factors such as climate. In this study, using a standardized method, we measured the NH3 emissions in three typical annual rice cropping systems: single rice, double rice and rotation with other crops. The measurements were conducted for 2 years with a total of 3131 observations across China. Results showed that NH3 emissions accounted for 17.7% (14.4 -21.0%) of the N applied under current farm practice, which was 33.1% (10.6-52.6%) higher than previous estimates. Nitrogen application rate was the dominant factor influencing NH3 emission rate, which exponentially increased with the N fertilizer rate (p < .001). Total NH3 emissions from paddy fields were estimated at 1.7 Tg N yr(-1) in 2013 in China, several times the amount of N lost through leaching or runoff. This suggests that mitigation measures for non-point source pollution from cropland should take into account not only the N lost to water, but also to air, thereby improving air quality. Abstract:The strategy to reduce agricultural ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions is a focus of attention for governments and scientists around the world. However, the effect of different irrigation and fertilization management practices on NH 3 emission in alkaline soil and the underlining mechanisms are poorly understood. An experiment with drip fertigation (a combination of fertilizing and irrigation), sprinkler fertigation, and traditional furrow irrigation with chemical fertilizer spraying was conducted in potato fields with alkaline soil in arid areas of Northwest China. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of three irrigation and fertilization management practices on NH 3 emissions using the static box-venting method in a three-year in situ trial. There are significant seasonal difference for NH 3 emission fluxes in alkaline soils under different fertilization and irrigation management practices. The accumulative NH 3 emissions in the alkaline soil from drip fertigation and sprinkler fertigation was 55.93% and 54.05% lower than that from traditional furrow irrigation, respectively. The dynamic changes of NH 4 + -N and NO 3 − -N in alkaline soil were the most important factors controlling the differences of NH 3 emissions under different irrigation and fertilization methods. Drip fertigation significantly reduced NH 3 emission intensity in alkaline soil, and were important measures for reducing agricultural NH 3 emissions and ensuring potato yield in alkaline soil farmland in arid regions.

Abstract:Current water-nitrogen (N) management strategies are necessary to be improved to increase crop productivity while reducing environmental costs. However, the effects of improved water-N management strategies on paddy CH4 and N2O emissions simultaneously generated during the growing and non-growing seasons have not been explored. Therefore, in this study, four water-N management practices—urea plus conventional irrigation (UREA+CI), urea plus alternate wetting-drying irrigation (UREA+AWD), controlled-release N fertilizer plus CI (CRNF+CI), and CRNF plus AWD (CRNF+AWD)—were evaluated in a 3-year field experiment following a randomized complete block design with three replications each. The results demonstrated that during rice growing seasons, CH4 emissions significantly decreased by 12.6–44.9% under UREA+AWD and by 17.2–32.1% under CRNF+CI, compared to UREA+CI, respectively, and CRNF+SWD showed the highest mitigation potential. N2O emissions were reduced in CRNF treatments (CRNF+CI and CRNF+AWD) but increased by replacing CI with AWD during rice growing seasons, suggesting the potential effects of water regimes on N2O emissions. Furthermore, AWD and CRNF reduced CH4 emissions during the land preparation period before the late rice growing season and the fallow period, whereas CRNF treatments triggered the release of N2O in the fallow period. Moreover, there were no significant differences in soil organic carbon sequestration rates among the treatments. The results indicated that AWD, CRNF and their combination significantly reduced annual net total greenhouse gas emissions without yield loss. Collectively, this study unravels the potential of alternative water-N management strategies to improve rice yields while minimizing GHG emissions in double rice cropping systems.

Abstract:Mapping gridded emission factors (EFs) of crops is vital for estimating ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions in China using the bottom-up methods. However, there is still a lack of high-resolution gridded EFs of NH 3 by crops in China, which are affected by climate, soil, and human management. Here, we established a data-driven approach for mapping crop-specific EFs of NH 3 in China based on ground-based data and multiple geospatial data. We found that rice exhibited the highest EFs at 13.35 %, followed by wheat at 5.50 %, and maize at 5.15 %. This underscores the significance of utilizing EFs specific to each crop for predicting NH 3 emission estimations. Furthermore, our results reveal substantial spatial variations in NH 3 EFs across China, with notably higher values observed in South China for rice and elevated EFs in North China for wheat and maize. According to our model, the deep fertilization method emerges as the most effective method for reducing NH 3 emissions, offering a remarkable 64 % reduction. Ongoing urbanization in China will lead to a rapid decline in the rural labor force in the coming years, which requires agricultural mechanization with less labor input. This shift in turn could support the implementation of deep fertilization techniques and reduce NH 3 emissions by half in 2050. Our findings offer valuable insights for shaping the future trajectory of Chinese agriculture in overcoming agricultural NH 3 loss.

Abstract:Livestock and crop production are the main sources of ammonia (NH3) emissions, which are known to degrade the air quality. Numerous studies have been conducted to explore the mitigation potential of various approaches, although few have examined the systematic NH3 emission mitigation potential when considering both crop and livestock systems based on coherent in situ measurement results. Herein, we design an optimal system wherein coupled crop and layer production systems reveal feasible approaches for significant mitigation potential at each stage of the process. Specifically, these measures involve (i) using a low crude protein (LCP) feed, (ii) composting manure with certain additives, and (iii) substituting manure with optimal fertilization in a summer maize-winter wheat cropping system. The results show that (i) LCP feed leads to a 14 % reduction in NH3 emissions at the housing stage, (ii) introducing additives during the composing stage reduces NH3 emissions by 16 %–46 %, and (iii) the NH3 reduction potential reaches 35 %–44 % at the field application stage. In the overall crop-layer system, the optimal system with the improved management strategy applied at every stage results in a 48 % and 56 % reduction in NH3 emissions for per unit eggs and grain production, respectively, relative to a traditional production system. This study confirms that NH3 emissions can be cut in half by implementing optimal crop-livestock systems with appropriate mitigation approaches. This is a feasible model that can be promoted and extended in various agricultural areas, which together with technological, policy, and economic support can enable significant mitigation potential for sustainable agriculture development.

Abstract:The excessive application of agricultural irrigation water and chemical fertilizer has increased crop yields to help meet the demand for food, but it has also led to major water environment problem, i.e. non-point source (NPS) pollution, which needs to be addressed to achieve sustainable development targets. Although numerous studies have focused on the control and reduction of agricultural NPS pollution from the perspective of irrigation and fertilizer, the effects of different cropping systems on NPS pollution (ammonia nitrogen (NH3−N)) in the Dongjiang River Basin (DRB) were seldom assessed. Specifically, variation in the NH3-N load was simulated and analyzed at the annual and semi-annual scales under ten different cropping systems using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, which was calibrated and validated with satisfactory statistical index values in the DRB. The results indicated that the NH3-N load decreased, distinctly increased, slightly decreased when sweet potato, peanut, and rice were planted, respectively. Compared with mono-cropping, crop rotation could reduce the NH3-N load, and the planting sequence of crops could affect the NH3-N load to a certain extent. Planting peanuts in spring would dramatically increase NH3-N load. To evaluate NH3-N pollution, a critical threshold of NH3-N emission (5.1 kg·ha−1·year−1) was proposed. Meeting the NH3-N emission threshold cannot be achieved by altering the cropping system alone; additional measures are needed to reduce agricultural NPS pollution. This study facilitates the development of cropping systems and provides relevant information to aid the sustainable development of agriculture in the DRB.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions can have significant impacts on the environment, ecology, and human health, with a key source being fertilizer application in croplands. NH 3 emissions from croplands are influenced not only by natural factors but also by human management practices and social factors. However, our current understanding of the mechanisms and driving factors behind these emissions is limited. In this study, we conducted a quantitative analysis of the factors influencing NH 3 emissions using data from in-situ experiments and historical emissions data from 1980 to 2020. Our analysis revealed that fertilization management is the most significant contributor, accounting for 47% of NH 3 emission flux at the point level. Climate conditions and soil properties contribute 21% and 32%, respectively, to cropland NH 3 flux. At the county level, the contributions of management practices and socioeconomic factors such as farm size to NH 3 emission factors are nearly equal, with proportions of 51% and 49%, respectively. Advancements in agricultural mechanization and practices focused on reducing fertilizer use can achieve a 29% reduction in NH 3 emissions by 2030, all while maintaining rapid socioeconomic development. This highlights a strategy that can improve environmental quality, ensure Chinese grain production security, and deliver significant socioeconomic and ecological benefits.

Abstract:Previous findings have shown that the human somatosensory cortical systems that are activated by passive nonpainful electrical stimulation include the contralateral primary somatosensory area (SI), bilateral secondary somatosensory area (SII), and bilateral insula. The present study tested the hypothesis that these areas have different sensitivities to stimulation frequency in the condition of passive stimulation. Functional MRI (fMRI) was recorded in 24 normal volunteers during nonpainful electrical median nerve stimulations at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 Hz repetition rates in separate recording blocks in pseudorandom order. Results of the blood oxygen level‐dependent (BOLD) effect showed that the contralateral SI, the bilateral SII, and the bilateral insula were active during these stimulations. As a major finding, only the contralateral SI increased its activation with the increase of the stimulus frequency at the mentioned range. The fact that nonpainful median‐nerve electrical stimuli at 4 Hz induces a larger BOLD response is of interest both for basic research and clinical applications in subjects unable to perform cognitive tasks in the fMRI scanner.
