Abstract:We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a nonclassicality test of a single-mode field in phase space, which has an analogy with the nonlocality test proposed by Banaszek and Wódkiewicz [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 2009 (1999)]. Our approach to deriving the classical bound draws on the fact that the Wigner function of a coherent state is a product of two independent distributions as if the orthogonal quadratures (position and momentum) in phase space behave as local realistic variables. Our method detects every pure nonclassical Gaussian state, which can also be extended to mixed states. Furthermore, it sets a bound for all Gaussian states and their mixtures, thereby providing a criterion to detect a genuine quantum non-Gaussian state. Remarkably, our phase-space approach with invariance under Gaussian unitary operations leads to an optimized test for a given non-Gaussian state. We experimentally show how this enhanced method can manifest quantum non-Gaussianity of a state by simply choosing phase-space points appropriately, which is essentially equivalent to implementing a squeezing operation on a given state.

Abstract:Nonclassical states play a crucial role in both theoretical and experimental investigations of quantum optics, and there is a wide interest in characterization and quantification of nonclassicality. By exploiting the freedom of the parameter s in the s-ordered phase-space distribution introduced by Cahill and Glauber [Phys. Rev. 177, 1882(1969)], we develop a method to reveal and quantify optical nonclassicality via the divided difference of the s-ordered phase-space distribution. Our approach yields naturally a family of quantifiers of optical nonclassicality, which have many desirable properties such as convexity and monotonicity under the Gaussian noise channels. The quantifiers are illustrated by evaluating nonclassicality of several typical states. Two simple and convenient criteria for nonclassicality are established, which in particular certify all nonclassical Gaussian states.
Revealing Nonclassicality Beyond Gaussian States Via A Single Marginal Distribution

Abstract:A standard method to obtain information on a quantum state is to measure marginal distributions along many different axes in phase space, which forms a basis of quantum-state tomography. We theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a general framework to manifest nonclassicality by observing a single marginal distribution only, which provides a unique insight into nonclassicality and a practical applicability to various quantum systems. Our approach maps the 1D marginal distribution into a factorized 2D distribution by multiplying the measured distribution or the vacuum-state distribution along an orthogonal axis. The resulting fictitious Wigner function becomes unphysical only for a nonclassical state; thus the negativity of the corresponding density operator provides evidence of nonclassicality. Furthermore, the negativity measured this way yields a lower bound for entanglement potential-a measure of entanglement generated using a nonclassical state with a beam-splitter setting that is a prototypical model to produce continuous-variable (CV) entangled states. Our approach detects both Gaussian and non-Gaussian nonclassical states in a reliable and efficient manner. Remarkably, it works regardless of measurement axis for all non-Gaussian states in finite-dimensional Fock space of any size, also extending to infinite-dimensional states of experimental relevance for CV quantum informatics. We experimentally illustrate the power of our criterion for motional states of a trapped ion, confirming their nonclassicality in a measurement-axis-independent manner. We also address an extension of our approach combined with phase-shift operations, which leads to a stronger test of nonclassicality, that is, detection of genuine non-Gaussianity under a CV measurement.

Abstract:Encoding is an indispensable procedure in general phase measurement, and it is usually performed with a deterministic unitary transformation between the initial probe state and the final state. In order to improve the measurement precision, many studies focus on the optimization of the initial probe state. In this paper, we propose a scheme of subtracting one photon from the output state of an SU(1,1) interferometer. In addition to improving the output state, we find that this scheme can be used to optimize the encoding procedure. The performance of this type of optimization is only strong when the phase-sensitive negativity is induced in the Wigner function of the equivalent probe state. If a nearly perfect single-photon detector is used for the singlephoton subtraction operation, the phase sensitivity within a narrow phase range can surpass 1/(./nu N), where N is the mean number of photons inside the SU(1,1) interferometer, and nu is the number of copies of the Gaussian probe state.

Abstract:The phase-space quasi-probability distribution formalism for representing quantum states provides practical tools for various applications in quantum optics such as identifying the nonclassicality of quantum states. We study filter functions that are introduced to regularize the Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ function. We show that the quantum map associated with a filter function is completely positive and trace preserving and hence physically realizable if and only if the Fourier transform of this function is a probability density distribution. We also derive a lower bound on the fidelity between the input and output states of a physical quantum filtering map. Therefore, based on these results, we show that any quantum state can be approximated, to arbitrary accuracy, by a quantum state with a regular Glauber-Sudarshan $P$ function. We propose applications of our results for estimating the output state of an unknown quantum process and estimating the outcome probabilities of quantum measurements.

Abstract:Quantification of nonclassicality and entanglement in a quantum state is crucial for quantum advantage in information processing and computation. Robustness is one of the tractable measures for quantifying quantum resources. Gaussian states are important in continuous variable quantum information for their theoretically simple and experimentally easily accessible. We provide the method of how to calculate the robustness of nonclassicality and enatnglement for Gaussian states. The robustness of nonclassicality or entanglement is demonstrated analytically for one-mode, two-mode Gaussain states and multimode symmetric Gaussian states, the result shows a clear physical meaning for the origin of nonclassicality and entanglement. For squeezed thermal states, the nonclassicality is equal to the entanglement for the two-mode case, while they are far apart for multimode cases.

Abstract:We consider a quantity that is the differential relative entropy between a generic Wigner function and a Gaussian one. We prove that said quantity is minimized with respect to its Gaussian argument, if both Wigner functions in the argument of the Wigner differential entropy have the same first and second moments, i.e., if the Gaussian argument is the Gaussian associate of the other, generic Wigner function. Therefore, we introduce the differential relative entropy between any Wigner function and its Gaussian associate and we examine its potential as a non-Gaussianity measure. We prove that said quantity is faithful, invariant under Gaussian unitary operations, and find a sufficient condition on its monotonic behavior under Gaussian channels. We provide numerical results supporting aforesaid condition. The proposed, phase-space based non-Gaussianity measure is complex-valued, with its imaginary part possessing the physical meaning of the negative volume of the Wigner function. At the same time, the real part of this measure provides an extra layer of information, rendering the complex-valued quantity a measure of non-Gaussianity, instead of a quantity pertaining only to the negativity of the Wigner function. We examine the usefulness of our measure to non-Gaussian quantum state engineering with partial measurements.

Abstract:Abstract Multiple photon subtraction applied to a displaced phase-averaged coherent state, which is a non-Gaussian classical state, produces conditional states with a non trivial (positive) Glauber-Sudarshan Prepresentation. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that, despite its simplicity, this class of conditional states cannot be fully characterized by direct detection of photon numbers. In particular, the non-Gaussianity of the state is a characteristics that must be assessed by phase-sensitive measurements. We also show that the non-Gaussianity of conditional states can be manipulated by choosing suitable conditioning values and composition of phase-averaged states.

Abstract:We propose efficient algorithms for classically simulating Gaussian unitaries and measurements applied to non-Gaussian initial states. The constructions are based on decomposing the non-Gaussian states into linear combinations of Gaussian states. We use an extension of the covariance matrix formalism to efficiently track relative phases in the superpositions of Gaussian states. We get an exact simulation algorithm which cost scales quadratically with the number of Gaussian states required to represent the initial state and an approximate simulation algorithm which cost scales linearly with the $l_1$ norm of the coefficients associated with the superposition. We define measures of non-Gaussianty quantifying this simulation cost, which we call the Gaussian rank and the Gaussian extent. From the perspective of quantum resource theories, we investigate the properties of this type of non-Gaussianity measure and compute optimal decomposition for states relevant to continuous-variable quantum computing.

Classical-Nonclassical Polarity of Gaussian States

Abstract:Gaussian states with nonclassical properties such as squeezing and entanglement serve as crucial resources for quantum information processing. Accurately quantifying these properties within multi-mode Gaussian states has posed some challenges. To address this, we introduce a unified quantification: the 'classical-nonclassical polarity', represented by $\mathcal{P}$. For a single mode, a positive value of $\mathcal{P}$ captures the reduced minimum quadrature uncertainty below the vacuum noise, while a negative value represents an enlarged uncertainty due to classical mixtures. For multi-mode systems, a positive $\mathcal{P}$ indicates bipartite quantum entanglement. We show that the sum of the total classical-nonclassical polarity is conserved under arbitrary linear optical transformations for any two-mode and three-mode Gaussian states. For any pure multi-mode Gaussian state, the total classical-nonclassical polarity equals the sum of the mean photon number from single-mode squeezing and two-mode squeezing. Our results provide a new perspective on the quantitative relation between single-mode nonclassicality and entanglement, which may find applications in a unified resource theory of nonclassical features.

Abstract:Genuinely quantum states of a harmonic oscillator may be distinguished from their classical counterparts by the Glauber-Sudarshan P representation—a state lacking a positive P function is said to be nonclassical. In this paper, we propose a general operational framework for studying nonclassicality as a resource in networks of passive linear elements and measurements with feed forward. Within this setting, we define new measures of nonclassicality based on the quantum fluctuations of quadratures, as well as the quantum Fisher information of quadrature displacements. These measures lead to fundamental constraints on the manipulation of nonclassicality, especially its concentration into subsystems, that apply to generic multimode non-Gaussian states. Special cases of our framework include no-go results in the concentration of squeezing and a complete hierarchy of nonclassicality for single-mode Gaussian states.
Phase-space negativity as a computational resource for quantum kernel methods

Abstract:Quantum kernel methods are a proposal for achieving quantum computational advantage in machine learning. They are based on a hybrid classical-quantum computation where a function called the quantum kernel is estimated by a quantum device while the rest of the computation is performed classically. Quantum advantages may be achieved through this method only if the quantum kernel function cannot be estimated efficiently on a classical computer. In this paper, we provide sufficient conditions for the efficient classical estimation of quantum kernel functions for bosonic systems. Specifically, we show that if the negativity in the phase-space quasi-probability distributions of data-encoding quantum states associated with the quantum kernel scales at most polynomially with the size of the quantum circuit, then the kernel function can be estimated efficiently classically. We consider quantum optical examples involving linear-optical networks with and without adaptive non-Gaussian measurements and investigate the effects of loss on the efficiency of the classical simulation. Our results underpin the role of the negativity in phase-space quasi-probability distributions as an essential resource in quantum machine learning based on kernel methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of a coherent superposed quantum state (CSQS) which is obtained by applying a coherent superposition of field annihilation ($a$) and creation ($a^\dagger$) operators, $N(ta+ra^\dagger)$ to a classical coherent state $|\alpha\rangle$, where $t$ and $r$ are scalars with $t^2+r^2=1$. Such an operation, when applied on states having classical characters, introduces strong nonclassicality. We use different criteria to check the nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of the considered quantum state. We first compute the Wigner function of CSQS. To study the nonclassicality of the considered state we further use (i) linear entropy (LE) (ii) Wigner logarithmic negativity (WLN) and (iii) skew information based measure. Relative entropy based measure is considered to analyze the variation in non-Gaussianity of CSQS. Finally, the dynamics of the Wigner function evolving under the photon loss channel is addressed to probe the effect of noise on nonclassicality as well as non-Gaussianity of CSQS.

Abstract:Extending the phase-space description of the Weyl-Wigner quantum mechanics to a subset of non-linear Hamiltonians in position and momentum, gaussian functions are identified as the quantum ground state. Once a Hamiltonian, $H^{W}(q,\,p)$, is constrained by the $\partial ^2 H^{W} / \partial q \partial p = 0$ condition, flow properties for generic $1$-dim systems can be analytically obtained in terms of Wigner functions and Wigner currents. For gaussian statistical ensembles, the exact phase-space profile of the quantum fluctuations over the classical trajectories are found, so to interpret them as a suitable Hilbert space state configuration for confronting quantum and classical regimes. In particular, a sort of {\em quantum camouflage} where the stationarity of classical statistical ensembles can be camouflaged by the stationarity of gaussian quantum ensembles is identified. Besides the broadness of the framework worked out in some previous examples, our results provide an encompassing picture of quantum effects on non-linear dynamical systems which can be interpreted as a first step for finding the complete spectrum of non-standard Hamiltonians.

Abstract:We provide a detailed analysis of the recently proposed setup for a loophole-free test of Bell inequality using conditionally generated non-Gaussian states of light and balanced homodyning. In the proposed scheme, a two-mode squeezed vacuum state is de-gaussified by subtracting a single photon from each mode with the use of an unbalanced beam splitter and a standard low-efficiency single-photon detector. We thoroughly discuss the dependence of the achievable Bell violation on the various relevant experimental parameters such as the detector efficiencies, the electronic noise and the mixedness of the initial Gaussian state. We also consider several alternative schemes involving squeezed states, linear optical elements, conditional photon subtraction and homodyne detection.

Abstract:The quadrature coherence scale (QCS) is a recently introduced measure that was shown to be an efficient witness of nonclassicality. It takes a simple form for pure and Gaussian states, but a general expression for mixed states tends to be prohibitively unwieldy. In this paper, we introduce a method for computing the quadrature coherence scale of quantum states characterized by Wigner functions expressible as linear combinations of Gaussian functions. Notable examples within this framework include cat states, GKP states, and states resulting from Gaussian transformations, measurements, and breeding protocols. In particular, we show that the quadrature coherence scale serves as a valuable tool for examining the scalability of nonclassicality in the presence of loss. Our findings lead us to put forth a conjecture suggesting that, subject to 50% loss or more, all pure states lose any QCS-certifiable nonclassicality. We also consider the quadrature coherence scale as a measure of quality of the output state of the breeding protocol.

Abstract:Gaussian states, operations, and measurements are central building blocks for continuous-variable quantum information processing which paves the way for abundant applications, especially including network-based quantum computation and communication. To make the most use of the Gaussian processes, it is required to understand and utilize suitable mathematical tools such as the symplectic space, symplectic algebra, and Wigner representation. Applying these mathematical tools to practical quantum scenarios, we developed various schemes for quantum transduction, interference-based bosonic mode permutation and bosonic sensing. We demonstrated that generic coupler characterized by Gaussian unitary process can be transformed into a high-fidelity transducer, assuming the access to infinite squeezing and adaptive feedforward with homodyne measurements. To address the practical limitation of finite squeezing, we explored the interference-based protocols. These protocols let us freely permute bosonic modes only assuming the access to single-mode Gaussian operations and multiple uses of a given multi-mode Gaussian process. Thus, such a scheme not only enables universal decoupling for bosonic systems, which is useful for suppressing undesired coupling between the system and the environment, but also faithful bidirectional single-mode quantum transduction. Moreover, noticing that the Gaussian processes are appropriate theoretical models for optical sensors, we studied the quantum noise theory for optical parameter sensing and its potential in providing great measurement precision enhancement. We also extended the Gaussian theories to discrete variable systems, with several examples such as quantum (gate) teleportation. All the analyses originated from the fundamental quantum commutation relations, and therefore are widely applicable.

Simulating Gaussian boson sampling quantum computers

Abstract:A growing cohort of experimental linear photonic networks implementing Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) have now claimed quantum advantage. However, many open questions remain on how to effectively verify these experimental results, as scalable methods are needed that fully capture the rich array of quantum correlations generated by these photonic quantum computers. In this paper, we briefly review recent theoretical methods to simulate experimental GBS networks. We focus mostly on methods that use phase-space representations of quantum mechanics, as these methods are highly scalable and can be used to validate experimental outputs and claims of quantum advantage for a variety of input states, ranging from the ideal pure squeezed vacuum state to more realistic thermalized squeezed states. A brief overview of the theory of GBS, recent experiments and other types of methods are also presented. Although this is not an exhaustive review, we aim to provide a brief introduction to phase-space methods applied to linear photonic networks to encourage further theoretical investigations.
