Abstract:Stainless steel is an important material used in many applications due to its mechanical strength and corrosion-resistant properties. The high corrosion resistance of stainless steel is provided by the passive film. Different stainless steels have different alloy elements and surface properties which could have a significant influence on bacterial attachment to the surface and thus might result in different microbial corrosion behaviours. In this study, the effect of adhesion of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on corrosion behaviour in artificial seawater on different stainless steels was investigated. Stainless steel materials used were SS 410, SS 420, SS 316 and DSS 2205 and pure chromium. The contact angle was measured to study the effect of surface properties of materials. Adhesion was measured by counting cells attached to the surface of materials. The corrosion behaviour of the materials was measured by electrochemical testing including measuring open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic behaviour. The long-term corrosion behaviour of each material was studied after six months of exposure by measuring weight loss and surface analysis with scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Hydrophobicity had a strong effect on bacterial attachment. Alloying elements e.g. nickel also had shown its ability to attract bacteria to adhere on the surface. However, the corrosion rate of different materials is determined not only by bacterial attachment but also by the stability of the passive film which is determined by the alloying elements, such as Mo and Cr. Chromium showed high resistance to corrosion, possibly due to toxicity on bacterial attachment. The nature of bacterial attachment and corrosion behaviour of the materials are discussed.

Effect of pH regulation by sulfate-reducing bacteria on corrosion behaviour of duplex stainless steel 2205 in acidic artificial seawater

Abstract:Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) can regulate environmental pH because of their metabolism. Because local acidification results in pitting corrosion, the potential capacity of pH regulation by SRB would have important consequences for electrochemical aspects of the bio-corrosion process. This study focused on identifying the effect of pH on the corrosion of duplex stainless steel 2205 in a nutrient-rich artificial seawater medium containing SRB species, Desulfovibrio vulgaris . Duplex stainless steel samples were exposed to the medium for 13 days at 37°C at pH ranging from 4.0 to 7.4. The open-circuit potential value, sulfide level, pH and number of bacteria in the medium were recorded daily. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization were used to study the properties of the biofilms at the end of the experiments and the corrosion behaviour of the material. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure the concentration of cations Fe, Ni, Mo, Mn, Cr in the experimental solution after 13 days. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used for surface analysis. The results showed the pH changed from acidic values set at the beginning of the experiment to approximately pH 7.5 after 5 days owing to bacterial metabolism. After 13 days, the highest iron concentration was in the solution that was initially at pH 4 accompanied by pitting on the stainless steel. Sulfur was present on all specimens but with more sulfur at pH 4 in the EDX spectra. EIS showed the film resistance of the specimen at pH 4 was much lower than at pH 7.4 which suggests the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel was better at higher pH. The results of this study suggest that the corrosion process for the first few days exposure at low pH was driven by pH in solution rather than by bacteria. The increasing pH during the course of the experiment slowed down the corrosion process of materials originally at low pH. The nature and mechanism of SRB attack on duplex stainless steel at different acidic environments are discussed.

Abstract:Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) in the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was investigated through electrochemical and surface analyses. The electrochemical results showed that P. aeruginosa significantly reduced the corrosion resistance of 2205 DSS. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images showed that the depths of the largest pits on 2205 DSS with and without P. aeruginosa were 14.0 and 4.9μm, respectively, indicating that the pitting corrosion was accelerated by P. aeruginosa. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed that CrO3 and CrN formed on the 2205 DSS surface in the presence of P. aeruginosa.

Abstract:The microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) resistance of a novel Cu-bearing 2205 duplex stainless steel (2205 Cu-DSS) against an aerobic marine Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm was investigated. The electrochemical test results showed that Rp increased and icorr decreased sharply after long-term immersion in the inoculation medium, suggesting that 2205 Cu-DSS possessed excellent MIC resistance to the P. aeruginosa biofilm. Fluorescence microscope images showed that 2205 Cu-DSS possessed a strong antibacterial ability, and its antibacterial efficiency after one and seven days was 7.75% and 96.92%, respectively. The pit morphology comparison after 14 days between 2205 DSS and 2205 Cu-DSS demonstrated that the latter showed a considerably reduced maximum MIC pit depth compared with the former (1.44 μm vs 9.50 μm). The experimental results suggest that inhibition of the biofilm was caused by the copper ions released from the 2205 Cu-DSS, leading to its effective mitigation of MIC by P. aeruginosa.

Abstract:Tidal corrosion of X80 pipeline steel in the inoculated marine tidal environment was investigated using weight-loss, SEM/EDS and electrochemical measurements. The results showed D. desulfuricans accelerated the tidal corrosion of the steel and the acceleration effect increased with the altitude of the specimen in tidal zones. The corrosion morphology of the specimens in all zones was non-uniform with some low-shallow corrosion pits in it, and the diameter and depth of the low-shallow pits increased with the altitude of the specimen. The D. desulfuricans activity, distribution of the S-containing compounds and wet/dry process were conjointly responsible for the accelerated tidal corrosion.Data availabilityThe raw/processed data required to reproduce these findings cannot be shared at this time as the data also forms part of an ongoing study.

Abstract:Abstract Microbiologically influenced corrosion of metals is prevalent in both natural and industrial environments, causing enormous structural damage and economic loss. Exactly how microbes influence corrosion remains controversial. Here, we show that the pitting corrosion of stainless steel is accelerated in the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilm by extracellular electron transfer between the bacterial cells and the steel electrode, mediated by a riboflavin electron shuttle. From pitting measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky analyses, the addition of an increased amount of riboflavin is found to induce a more defective passive film on the stainless steel. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that enhanced bioanodic and biocathodic process can both promote the corrosion of the stainless steel. Using in situ scanning electrochemical microscopy, we observe that extracellular electron transfer between the bacterium and the stainless steel is bidirectional in nature and switchable depending on the passive or active state of the steel surface.
Effect of Flow on the Corrosion Behavior of Pipeline Steel in Supercritical CO2 Environments with Impurities

Abstract:Corrosion is a major concern in transmission pipelines that transport captured CO2. While dry CO2 is noncorrosive, significant corrosion has been reported in dense phase CO2 with trace amounts of water and impurities such as O2, H2S, SOx, and NOx. The aim of this work is to improve our understanding of the physicochemical aspects on the corrosion of carbon steels in the high-pressure environments associated with CO2 transmission pipelines. The effect of flow on the corrosion of X65 carbon steel was investigated in a series of autoclave tests with different combinations of impurity concentrations in supercritical CO2 condition (8 MPa and 35°C). The corrosion rate of specimens was determined by weight loss measurements. The surface morphology and composition of the corrosion product layers were characterized using surface analytical techniques (SEM, EDS and Raman microscopy). Localized corrosion was measured via surface profilometry after corrosion products were removed. Results showed that no corrosion was observed in the supercritical CO2 with 650 ppmv of water, 50 ppmv SO2, and 100 ppmv NO, but corrosion occurred when SO2 concentration was increased to 4500 ppmv and 40,000 ppmv of O2 was added to the system. The presence of flow significantly accelerated the corrosion of carbon steel. Furthermore, localized corrosion was observed in the presence of both O2 and flow.

Abstract:Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) caused by mixed microorganisms limits the application of 321 stainless steel (SS) in the field of ocean engineering. Therefore, in this paper, the synergistic effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and Shewanella algae ( S. algae ) on the corrosion behavior of 321 SS was studied by surface analysis and electrochemical measurements. The results revealed that riboflavin secreted by S. algae promoted the electron transfer between SRB and 321 SS by obtaining the electrons generated by the dissolution of metallic iron on the surface of SS and then transferring them to SRB, thus accelerating the MIC of 321 SS. Meanwhile, SRB gained electrons and reacted with SO 4 2− to form HS − , which reacted with iron oxides in the Cr-rich passive film on the surface of SS to generate iron sulfides, providing thermodynamic and kinetic conditions for the formation of Cr 6+ . The formation of thermodynamically unstable Cr 6+ destructed the passive film on the SS surface and promoted the development of pitting corrosion. The outcome provided a new perspective for studying the corrosion mechanism of extracellular electron transfer (EET)-MIC.

Abstract:Duplex stainless steels (DSS) are high strength corrosion resistant materials used in the chemical and petrochemical industries. When compared to conventional austenitic grades (AISI 304L, 316L, 317L), DSS are more expensive, but present higher strength levels and are more resistant to Cl− environments. In the present work it was investigated how microstructural variations can affect the corrosion resistance of a DSS UNS S31803 in artificial sea water media. Pitting corrosion resistance in 3.5%NaCl solution was evaluated by cyclic polarization tests at room temperature and 60 °C. The double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation test (DL-EPR) was also used to evaluate the degree of sensitization due to tertiary phases, such as σ and Cr2N. Structures containing sigma phase were found to be the most susceptible to pitting and localized corrosion. Cr2N, present in the as-melted sample, decreases the pitting potential but does not cause sensitization.

Abstract:Bacteria are introduced into natural gas transmission pipelines through water-driven gas extraction, which can exacerbate the occurrence of pipeline corrosion. This study utilized a micro-reactor to design a simulated corrosion environment that mimics natural gas gathering and transportation pipelines. The objective was to investigate the corrosion behavior of X80 pipeline steel under the combined effects of CO2, Cl-, sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), and iron bacteria (IOB). Additionally, it aimed to elucidate the influence mechanisms of these two microorganisms on corrosion. Under a humid environment with a total pressure of 8.5 MPa and a partial pressure of CO2 at 0.85 MPa, the corrosion rate of X80 pipeline steel was observed to follow the sequence: IOB > control (asepsis) > SRB + IOB > SRB. During the initial stages of corrosion, highly active IOB becomes the primary factor contributing to corrosion. As corrosion progresses, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the SRB system gradually decreases while SRB activity intensifies, leading to the formation of FeS through the process of corrosion. The corrosion current density (icorr) exhibited a significant decrease, thereby intensifying localized corrosion of the corrosion products beneath the film. This resulted in a maximum pitting depth of 113.5 μm. Research on the behavior of microbial-enhanced corrosion provides significant guidance in the development and implementation of protective coatings.
Flow Induced Corrosion in 6061-T6 Aluminum Pipes in De-Ionized Water Environments

Abstract:Flow induced corrosion/erosion of 6061-T6 aluminum in de-ionized (DI) water environments has not been studied widely. Especially, the long-term effects of corrosion/erosion in seemingly benign flow velocity, temperature, and resistivity ranges of 8 ft/s, 85 oF, 3-5 MOhm-cm, respectively. This study concludes that the flow induced corrosion/erosion in the above parameter ranges is minimal. This is detailed by presenting a literature survey, measuring pipe wall samples from a system that has operated in the above parameter range, predict the loss of material in mm/year at the above velocities and at higher temperatures using electric potential values from other experimental studies coupled with wall shear stress simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis.

Abstract:Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 is an attractive model microbe for elucidating the biofilm-metal interactions that contribute to the billions of dollars in corrosion damage to industrial applications each year. Multiple mechanisms for S. oneidensis-enhanced corrosion have been proposed, but none of these mechanisms have previously been rigorously investigated with methods that rule out alternative routes for electron transfer. We found that S. oneidensis grown under aerobic conditions formed thick biofilms (∼50 μm) on stainless steel coupons, accelerating corrosion over sterile controls. H2 and flavins were ruled out as intermediary electron carriers because stainless steel did not reduce riboflavin and previous studies have demonstrated stainless does not generate H2. Strain ∆mtrCBA, in which the genes for the most abundant porin-cytochrome conduit in S. oneidensis were deleted, corroded stainless steel substantially less than wild-type in aerobic cultures. Wild-type biofilms readily reduced nitrate with stainless steel as the sole electron donor under anaerobic conditions, but strain ∆mtrCBA did not. These results demonstrate that S. oneidensis can directly consume electrons from iron-containing metals and illustrate how direct metal-to-microbe electron transfer can be an important route for corrosion, even in aerobic environments.

Abstract:The corrosion of uncoated metals in a marine environment restricts the choice of suitable engineering metals and alloys. Both anodic dissolution of metal and cathodic reduction of oxygen are important processes. Formation of a surface oxide film can affect both electrode reactions. Charge transfer and mass transfer data can provide information on corrosion rate and mechanism. The RCE geometry offers the benefits of a controlled, turbulent flow of electrolyte, facilitating controlled fluid flow and mass transfer in a compact cell geometry which is well-suited to bench-top operation. These features are illustrated using a variety of electrochemical techniques, including open-circuit potential vs. time monitoring, linear sweep voltammetry, rotation speed step- or potential step current transients and linear polarisation resistance measurements. Seawater, which was taken from Langstone Harbour, Hampshire, UK, was filtered, air-saturated, pH 8.0 and maintained at 25 oC. Dimensionless group correlations and graphical plots (using an analogous approach to the Koutecky-Levich equation for an RDE) enabled contributions of charge transfer-, mixed- and mass transfer- controlled data to be appreciated, allowing the Tafel slopes of electrode reactions, the diffusion coefficient of dissolved oxygen, the mass transfer coefficient for oxygen reduction and the mean corrosion rate to be estimated.

Microstructural Understanding of Flow Accelerated Corrosion of SA106B Carbon Steel in High-Temperature Water with Different Flow Velocities

Abstract:All light or heavy water reactors fabricated with carbon steels suffer from flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC). The FAC degradation of SA106B with different flow velocities was investigated in terms of microstructure. As flow velocity increased, the major corrosion type changed from general corrosion to localized corrosion. Severe localized corrosion occurred in the pearlite zone, which can be the prior location for generating pits. After normalizing, the improvement in microstructure homogeneity reduced the oxidation kinetics and lowered cracking sensitivity, causing a decrease in FAC rates of 33.28%, 22.47%, 22.15%, and 17.53% at flow velocity of 0 m/s, 1.63 m/s, 2.99 m/s, and 4.34 m/s, respectively. Additionally, localized corrosion tendency was decreased by reducing the micro-galvanic effect and tensile stresses in oxide film. The maximum localized corrosion rate decreased by 21.7%, 13.5%, 13.8%, and 25.4% at flow velocity of 0 m/s, 1.63 m/s, 2.99 m/s, and 4.34 m/s, respectively.

Abstract:Nadolol, a beta-blocker used in the management of hypertension and angina pectoris, has three chiral centers and is currently marketed as an equal mixture of its four stereoisomers. Enantiomeric separation of nadolol by high-performance liquid chromatography was studied on a column packed with novel heptakis (6-azido-6-deoxy-2, 3-di-O-phenylcarbamolyted) beta-cyclodextrin bonded chiral stationary phase. The retention behavior and resolution of nadolol enantiomers were investigated and discussed with respect to the mobile phase composition and flow rate, pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The optimal separation condition was found; the mobile phase contained 80% buffer solution (1% triethylamine acetate, pH 5.5) and 20% methanol with 0.3 ml/min mobile phase flow rate at a temperature of 20 degrees C. At the optimal conditions, resolution of three stereoisomers of nadolol was obtained with a complete separation of the most active enantiomer, (RSR)-nadolol. Thermodynamic properties including enthalpy and entropy change of binding to the CSP for the enantiomeric separation were also determined.

Abstract:Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is one of the reasons leading to the service failure of pipelines buried in the soil. In this work, the effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on the corrosion behavior of Q235 carbon steel in groundwater was investigated by electrochemical methods, surface analysis, and biological analysis. The results show that SRB utilizes iron as electron donor to sustain the vital activities of organic carbon-starved groundwater during the 14-day experimental period. The microbial community composition analysis at the genus level demonstrate that the diversity and richness decrease after corrosion, and the dominant SRB species has changed from Desulfovibrio to Desulfosporosinus . Moreover, the impedance of the carbon steel in the presence of biofilm was 1 order of magnitude higher than that of other periods in the electrochemical test, indicating that the biofilm and formed ferrous sulfide layer impeded the occurrence of corrosion. Although the 3D topography indicated that the surface of carbon steel was more uneven and pits were increased in the presence of SRB, the average weight loss (0.0396 ± 0.0050 g) was much higher than that without SRB (0.0139 ± 0.0007 g). These results implied that the growth of SRB makes the corrosion process of Q235 carbon steel more complicated.

High throughput screening of localised and general corrosion in type 2205 duplex stainless steel at ambient temperature

Abstract:Bipolar electrochemistry is used to produce a linear potential gradient across a bipolar electrode (BPE), providing direct access to the anodic and cathodic reactions under a wide range of applied potentials. The occurrence of pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion on type 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS 2205) BPE has been observed at room temperature. The critical pit depth of 10–20 µm with a 55%–75% probability of pits developing into stable pits at potential from +0.9 to +1.2 V vs. OCP (open circuit potential) are measured. All pit nucleation sites are either within ferritic grains or at the interface between austenite and ferrite. The critical conditions for pitting and crevice corrosion are discussed with Epit (critical pitting potential) and Ecre (critical crevice potential) decreasing from 0.87 and 0.80 V vs. OCP after 150 s of exposure to 0.84 and 0.76 V vs. OCP after 900 s of exposure, respectively. Pit growth kinetics under different applied bipolar potentials and exposure times have been obtained. The ferrite is shown to be more susceptible to general dissolution.

Abstract:The microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) behavior of carbon steel and copper induced by SRB was investigated by low levels of the biocide tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulphate (THPS) and the environmental electron shuttle riboflavin in early incubation and harsh conditions. After 7 days of incubation, riboflavin weakened the inhibition for SRB by THPS in the carbon steel system, but did not apply to the copper. Thirty ppm THPS inhibited planktonic cell proliferation, but still formed visual biofilms on carbon steel and copper surfaces. In the co-existence of THPS and riboflavin, higher corrosion rates were obtained in carbon steel, while the MIC of copper was mitigated. For the harsh biotic systems, thirty ppm THPS was ineffective against the SRB-MIC of the harsh systems. Riboflavin was the icing on the cake for carbon steel under this condition, accelerating the SRB-MIC process. Electrochemical noise currents were used to monitor the effects of chemical injection in harsh conditions.

Abstract:The chemistry of bacterial biofilms as well as the nutritional composition of culture environments may differ at any time within a growth process, especially for SRB consortia within oil wells with limited carbon sources. In the oilfield, the presence of SRB biofilms on surfaces of steel substrates leads to microbiologically influenced corrosion and compromised material integrity. In this work, the survival of SRB cells and their impact on the pipeline steel corrosion within simulated CO2-saturated oilfield-produced water with different concentrations of organic carbon source have been investigated. Cell counts reduced with the level of carbon source reduction (CSR) after incubation but more sessile cells survived at 80% CSR (moderate carbon starvation) compared to 100% CSR (extreme carbon starvation). The energy needed for cellular survival as well as biological support toward MIC could have been harnessed by a combination of extracellular Feo oxidation and intracellular sulfate reduction even after carbon source starvation. Severe anodic steel dissolution was observed at the end of the culture period within the simulated CO2-saturated oilfield-produced water, and this is attributed to SRB-led MIC and CO2 corrosion. Pipeline steel corroded more when cultured within 80% CSR compared to the medium with both lactate and citrate. Steel substrate corroded less with 100% CSR due to severely weakened SRB biofilms from nutrient deprivation.

Abstract:The flow-influenced corrosion (FIC) behavior of SA106B/316L stainless steel (SS) welded joints with SS located upstream and downstream is investigated experimentally and numerically. The damage components of microstructure heterogeneity and geometric discontinuity are quantified. The FIC of the welded joint is affected by the combination of galvanic corrosion, mass transfer, and charge transfer. The electrochemical measurements indicate that the corrosion is aggravated by a flow disturbance component of 18.70%~26.96%. The corrosion of SA106B carbon steel is more severe than 52M and 316L SS due to galvanic effect, which is further promoted by flow disturbance. The FIC mechanism is also discussed.
