Abstract:Despite the remarkable advances in mitigating ice formation and accretion, however, no engineered anti-icing surfaces today can durably prevent frost formation, droplet freezing, and ice accretion in an economical and ecofriendly way. Herein, sustainable and low-cost electrolyte hydrogel (EH) surfaces are developed by infusing salted water into a hydrogel matrix for avoiding icing. The EH surfaces can both prevent ice/frost formation for an extremely long time and reduce ice adhesion strength to ultralow value (Pa-level) at a tunable temperature window down to -48.4 °C. Furthermore, ice can self-remove from the tilted EH surface within 10 s at -10 °C by self-gravity. As demonstrated by both molecular dynamic simulations and experiments, these extreme performances are attributed to the diffusion of ions to the interface between EH and ice. The sustainable anti-icing properties of EH can be maintained by replenishing in real-time with available ion sources, indicating the promising applications in offshore platforms and ships.
Icephobic Surfaces Induced by Interfacial Nonfrozen Water

Abstract:It is known that smooth, hydrophobic solid surfaces exhibit low ice adhesion values, which have been shown to approach a lower ice adhesion strength limit (∼150 kPa) defined by the water receding contact angle. To overcome this limit, we have designed self-lubricating icephobic coatings by blending polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) amphiphilic copolymers into a polymer matrix. Such coatings provide low ice adhesion strength values (∼50 kPa) that can substantially reduce the lower bound of the ice adhesion strength achieved previously on smooth, hydrophobic solid surfaces. Different molecular mechanisms are responsible for the low ice adhesion strength attained by these two approaches. For the smooth hydrophobic surfaces, an increased water depletion layer thickness at the interface weakens the van der Waals' interactions between the ice and the polymeric substrate. For the self-lubricating icephobic coatings, the PEG component of the amphiphilic copolymer is capable of strongly hydrogen bonding with water molecules. The surface hydrogen-bonded water molecules do not freeze, even at substantial levels of subcooling, and therefore serve as a self-lubricating interfacial liquid-like layer that helps to reduce the adhesion strength of ice to the surface. The existence of nonfrozen water molecules at the ice-solid interface is confirmed by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
Ultralong Inhibition of Heterogeneous Ice Nucleation by Robust Anti-Freezing Coating with Self-Lubricating Ionic Salts Layer

Abstract:In order to reduce the detrimental effects arising from ice formation on surfaces, we designed a robust polyurethane (PU) coating that was covalently crosslinked with quaternary ammonium salt (QAS)-modified fluorosiloxanes. With such a coating, surface ice formation could be delayed by as long as 65.0 +/- 1.5 min, and ice adhesion strength could be lowered to 30 +/- 7 kPa at -15 degrees C. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the ultralong icing phenomenon could be attributed to the destruction of hydrogen bonds among water molecules due to QAS becoming enriched on the coating surface, which we defined as the "ion-induced icing delay". Moreover, the modified PU coating exhibited superior self-renewability since the internally self-assembled nanopools (10 similar to 100 nm) could provide a continuous supply for a regenerative self-lubricating ionic salt layer (SISL), as was visually observed by confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The excellent anti-freezing capabilities, as well as the desirable all-in-one properties including transparency, chemical resistance, and regenerability, ensure that the SISL-PU coating system is a promising candidate for applications in areas such as public transportation, social infrastructure, and energy networks.
Improved Icephobic Properties on Surfaces with a Hydrophilic Lubricating Liquid

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces were developed recently for icephobic surface applications. Perfluorinated liquids, silicone oil, hydrocarbon, and water were used as lubricating liquids to form a continuous layer on a suitable substrate to prevent icing. However, ice accretion performances of these surfaces have not been reported previously depending on the type of the lubricant. In this work, fluorinated aliphatics, polyalphaolefin, silicone oil, and decamethylcyclopenta siloxane were used as hydrophobic lubricants; water, ethylene glycol, formamide, and water-glycerine mixture were used as hydrophilic lubricants to be impregnated by hydrophobic polypropylene and hydrophilic cellulose-based filter paper surfaces; ice accretion, drop freezing delay time, and ice adhesion strength properties of these surfaces were examined; and the results were compared to those of the reference surfaces such as aluminum, copper, polypropylene, and polytetrafluoroethylene. An ice accretion test method was also developed to investigate the increase of the mass of formed ice gravimetrically by spraying supercooled water onto these surfaces at different subzero temperatures ranging between -1 and -5 °C. It was determined that hydrophilic solvents (especially a water-glycerine mixture) that impregnated hydrophilic porous surfaces would be a promising candidate for anti-icing applications at -2 °C and 56-83% relative humidity because ice accretion and ice adhesion strength properties of these surface decreased simultaneously in these conditions.

Abstract:The ice formation processes on solid surfaces are complex and diverse, which makes it a daunting challenge to design an icephobic material that is functional under different icing conditions in a complex varying real-life environment. Here, inspired by anti-freeze proteins, a multifunctional anti-icing platform based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-grafted polyelectrolyte hydrogel is reported, which can simultaneously inhibit ice nucleation, prevent ice growth, and reduce ice adhesion. The properties of interfacial water can be controlled by tuning the synergy of hydrophobicity and ion specificity, in contrast with the conventional wholly hydrophobic bulk systems (e.g., PDMS). This provides us a promising route to integrate various icephobic advantages into one material. The controllability of interfacial water grants the polyelectrolyte hydrogel coating high performance in inhibiting ice nucleation (ice nucleation temperature lower than -30 degrees C), preventing ice propagation (ice propagation rate lower than 0.002 cm(2)/s), and reducing ice adhesion (ice adhesion strength lower than 20 kPa).

Abstract:The coating, made of PDMS, PTFE, and SiO2 NPs, exhibits excellent water repellency and easy roll‐off of water droplet capabilities. The coating exhibits high freezing delay time and low ice adhesion strength, which are associated with a reduced contact area between the solid/liquid or coating/ice interface owing to the formation of air voids. Ice accumulation and proliferation adversely affect the activities of various residential, commercial, and polar research stations. Although significant efforts are devoted to preventing ice adhesion to various surfaces by developing various anti‐icing coatings, it is still necessary to enhance overall performance and durability. Herein, a facile approach is proposed for fabricating an icephobic coating on an aluminum 6061 (Al) substrate, by coating a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/ poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) composite through a spin‐coating method, followed by sprinkling of SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). Crosslinker/binder‐free adhesion between PDMS and PTFE is achieved by utilizing secondary‐induced electrostatic dipole‐dipole interactions, these interactions are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations as well as structural studies. Moreover, the controlled addition of PTFE powder to PDMS improves the water‐repellency, mechanical strength, and surface roughness of the coating. The self‐formation of the superhydrophobic state of the PDMS/PTFE composite is achieved by sprinkling SiO2 NPs. The sprinkled SiO2 NPs are protected by the PDMS/PTFE composite, which serves as a stress concentrator to achieve low ice adhesion. Furthermore, freezing at low temperatures can be delayed by controlling the heat flow rate, interfacial contact area, and surface texture. This indicates the feasibility of the proposed method for various promising anti‐icing applications.

Tailoring the Icephobic Performance of Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces through the LbL Method

Abstract:There has been increasing interest in recent years in identifying an ice-removal procedure that is low cost and scalable and consumes a negligible amount of energy in order to prevent catastrophic failures in outdoor structures. One of the potential solutions to the structural problems caused by frigid and icy conditions is the use of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) to effect passive ice removal using easy, economical, and energy-free means. This work takes advantage of the highly flexible layer-by-layer (LbL) technology to customize and design surfaces that have a high degree of roughness using negatively and positively charged polyelectrolytes and negatively charged silica nanoparticles (NPs). SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images represent the silica nanoparticles deposition on the surface of the thin film. The roughness of these thin films has been demonstrated by AFM (atomic force microscopy) investigation. The main characteristics of these surfaces are their high contact angle and low water contact angle hysteresis, which is achieved by the fluorinated lubricant that is infused in the pores of the films. The ice adhesion strength of the thin films was measured using a home-built normal mode tensile test in an environmental chamber, which confirmed the icephobicity of the surface as having an adhesion strength of less than 5 kPa, implying that this surface is an excellent candidate for passive removal of ice. The thin films were aged for up to 100 days, and the results showed that the thin film could reduce the ice adhesion strength by 65%, even after this period. The ice adhesion strength of the thin film after icing/deicing cycles showed that 80% of the icephobicity of the thin film had been preserved even after 50 cycles.
Oil-Infused Superhydrophobic Silicone Material for Low Ice Adhesion with Long-Term Infusion Stability

Abstract:A new approach for anti-icing materials was created to combat the effects of ice accretion and adhesion. The concept combines the strengths of individual characteristics for low ice adhesion based on elasticity, superhydrophobicity, and slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) for an optimal combination of high water repellency and ice-phobicity. This was achieved by replicating microtextures from a laser-irradiated aluminum substrate to an oil-infused polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, the result of which is a flexible, superhydrophobic, and lubricated material. This design provides multiple strategies of icing protection through high water repellency to retard ice accretion and with elasticity and oil infusion for low ice adhesion in a single material. Studies showed that an infusion of silicone oils with viscosity at 100 cSt and below 8 wt % in PDMS solution is sufficient to reduce the ice shear strength to an average of 38 kPa while maintaining contact angles and roll-off angles of above 150° and below 10°, respectively. This ice-adhesion value is a ∼95% reduction from a bare aluminum surface and ∼30% reduction from a microtextured, superhydrophobic PDMS material without oil infusion. In addition, three-month aging studies showed that the wetting and ice-adhesion performance of this material did not significantly degrade.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Hypothesis</h3><p>State-of-the-art superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) usually do not function in high humidity and frosty climate conditions. Lubricant-infused slippery surfaces (LISSs) with a homogeneous and ultraslippery surface are expected to be a reliable icephobic technique. Hence, the fabrication of simple and scalable bioinspired LISSs is important for practical applications.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Experiments</h3><p>Durable one-step LISSs consisting of silicone oil and polymer mixtures were fabricated. A grid map based on added oil and silica nanoparticles was developed to tune wettability, morphology, and slippery behavior of surfaces. A similar framework for ice adhesion of lubricant-infused coatings was also presented for the design of optimal icephobic materials.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Findings</h3><p>LISSs with slight hydrophobicity yield slippery properties, resulting in an order of magnitude lower ice adhesion compared to SHSs. The stable 20-w% silicone-oil-infused slippery coating with slight hydrophobicity and silica nanoparticles was found to be effective in anti-icing. The nanoparticles firmly anchor the oil overlayer and eliminate contamination by drying the surface. The LISSs made of polymers with surface energy ranging from 29 to 31 mJ/m<sup>2</sup> show the potential to achieve low ice adhesion. As a result, the use of systematic frameworks highlights the role of material parameters. One-production strategy can be broadly used to design icephobic materials.</p>

Abstract:<p>Preventing ice accretion on exposed surfaces is important to the operational performance of various facilities and devices. As time elapses and temperature lowers sufficiently, ice accretion becomes inevitable. Herein, we present a new approach to prepare icephobic coatings by incorporating two strategies towards lowering ice adhesion strength, i.e. introducing an aqueous lubricating layer and maximizing macro-crack initiators at the ice-substrate interface. The aqueous lubricating layer is realized by grafting poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, and the macro-crack initiators are induced by introducing macro-scale hollow sub-surface structures into PDMS coatings. By using vertical shear tests, ice adhesion strengths of PAA-<em>g</em>-PDMS (10:1), PDMS coatings with macro-scale hollow sub-surface structures (hPDMS) (10:1), PAA-<em>g</em>-hPDMS (10:1), PAA-<em>g</em>-PDMS (10:10), hPDMS (10:10), and PAA-<em>g</em>-hPDMS (10:10) coatings are obtained as 178.5 ± 22 kPa, 153.1 ± 19 kPa, 122.7 ± 18 kPa, 24.6 ± 4 kPa, 20.3 ± 3.4 kPa and 17.6 ± 3.2 kPa, respectively, showing a reduction of 37.2 %, 46.1 %, 56.8 %, 32.8 %, 44.5 % and 51.9 % when compared with corresponding pure PDMS coatings. These results indicate that ice adhesion strength can be further reduced by simultaneously introducing two strategies. The principle of designing icephobic coatings by combining two or more strategies to reduce ice adhesion to as low as possible provides a new avenue to the preparation of icephobic coatings, and makes practical applications possible under extremely severe conditions.</p>

Abstract:Undesired ice accumulation can lead to serious negative impacts on daily life and equipment safety. Slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLISs) have been widely studied for their low ice adhesion strength (τice). However, the lack of durability, weak robustness, and complex preparation process hinder the application of SLISs. In this work, robust oil-infused porous surface (RIPS) was obtained by a facile one-step method, which used epoxy resin (E44) as a substrate and contained fumed silica and silicone oil. The RIPS-6 displays outstanding anti-icing/deicing ability, superior liquid repellency, good self-cleaning performance, and excellent mechanical robustness. At −5 °C, the water droplet remained unfrozen after 7200 s. τice was only 6.9 kPa at −20 °C and remained below 15 kPa during 10 icing cycles. Furthermore, the mixture of E44 and fumed silica enhanced the mechanical properties including the hardness (4 H) and abrasion resistance of RIPS-6. The icephobicity can be remained (τice < 40 kPa) even after 150 cycles of sandpaper abrasion at 2.5 kPa. The anti-icing and deicing coating with excellent mechanical stability and durability significantly improves the practical application possibility of the coating in harsh environments.

Abstract:The limited durability of slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) restricts their practical applications. Inspired by the epidermal glands of skins, we developed a facile approach to durable SLIPS with gland-like storage and release functions for icephobicity. By introducing a hybrid surfactant as a lubricant into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, lubricant capsules were formed and mono-dispersed in the matrix, working as gland-like structures to release lubricant. The obtained SLIPS showed durable low ice adhesion strength and thermal durability simultaneously. In detail, the enhanced durability for icephobicity was demonstrated by 20 icing/deicing tests, in which the lubricant remains on the surface; the coatings showed negligible weight loss when stored at 100 °C for 60 h, displaying pronounced thermal durability of the slippery effect. Our current strategy sheds new light on a facile fabrication of mechanically and thermally durable SLIPS for icephobicity.

Abstract:The prevalence of icing in nature has become a significant threat to human work and life, prompting the development of more energy-efficient active/passive combination anti-icing/deicing technologies. In order to overcome the disadvantage of the poor durability of superhydrophobic surfaces, lubricated surfaces inspired by nepenthes have been preferred. In this study, a paraffin and silicone oil-infused photothermal foam (PSIPF) with excellent overall performance was prepared using polypyrrole (PPy) as a photothermal conversion material, a mixture of silicone oil and paraffin as a lubricating fluid, and melamine foam (MF) as a carrier. The surface adhesive strength is less than 20 kPa at -20 °C, the melting time is only 1018 s at an irradiance of 200 W/m2 and -20 °C (0.2 sun), and surface droplets do not freeze within 1 h at -10 °C. Furthermore, the surface exhibits excellent mechanical durability and stability, maintaining optimal lubrication properties following repeated cycles of icing/deicing, water rinsing, and immersion for 2 days in acid and alkaline conditions. This photothermal lubricated surface with excellent anti-icing/deicing properties at low temperatures and in weak-light environments provides a wider range of applications for equipment at high latitudes and high altitudes.

Abstract:In recent years, oil-contained deicing materials have aroused peoples' concern due to their weak ice adhesion feature. Yet the loss of lubricant on oil-contained surface caused by contact or volatilization should be considered. Oily sebum secreted by sebaceous glands lubricates and moisturizes our skin, and can be reproduced continuously even after daily cleaning. In this work, inspired by sebaceous glands, a self-lubricant (SL) coating with ultra-low ice adhesion and excellent deicing durability was designed via continuously secreting lubricants. To determine the suitable simulant of oily sebum, the tribological tests and theoretical simulation analysis of lubricant on ice were conducted, confirming the effect of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lubricants. By well mixing lubricant and resin, and sebaceous glands-like structures formed in coating matrix after curing, which endowed coating with lubricant storage feature and sebum-like secretion structure. The affinity of PDMS molecules to ice and the regeneration of lubricant film ensured the deicing durability of coating. Ice adhesion strength can be kept below 100 kPa even after 100 icing-deicing cycles, and can recover low ice adhesion strength (~50 kPa) via lubricant secreting. This work highlights the importance of lubricant selection and gives a new vision to designing durable icephobic materials.
Fabrication of a Porous Slippery Icephobic Surface and Effect of Lubricant Viscosity on Anti-Icing Properties and Durability

Abstract:A breakdown caused by the icing of power generation infrastructure is one of the serious disasters occurring in the power system. Slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), whose ice adhesion strength is extremely low, have a promising application in the anti-icing field. In the present study, we fabricated SLIPSs with low ice adhesion strength by infusing silicone oil into an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate. In addition, the effects of the viscosity of silicone oil on the anti-icing properties and durability of the SLIPSs were investigated. The results show that a lower viscosity silicone oil brings about more slippery surfaces and lower ice adhesion strength. The ice adhesion strength was reduced by 99.3% in comparison with the bare Al alloy. However, low-viscosity silicone oil has worse de-icing resistance and heat resistance. Additionally, the porous films filled with low-viscosity silicone oil possess a better self-healing property after icing/de-icing cycles and followed by exposure to the atmosphere. When the viscosity of silicone oil is 50 mPa·s, the SLIPSs exhibit the best durability for anti-icing. Even after 21 de-icing tests or 168 h of heating at 90 °C, the ice adhesion strength still remains below 10% compared with that of bare Al. This work provides some useful advice for the design and fabrication of anti-icing SLIPSs.

Bioinspired Tough Organohydrogel Dynamic Interfaces Enabled Subzero Temperature Antifrosting, Deicing, and Antiadhesion

Abstract:Icing of water (moisture) at subzero temperatures with different length scales is harmful to a variety of applications spanning from large-scale aircraft to small camera lens. Existing strategies relying on controlling the surface structure and material are encumbered with shortcomings of short frost delay time, poor durability, and difficulty in large-scale production. Inspired from the mucus secretion of mollusks, we introduce organohydrogel dynamic interfaces that can perform dynamic and reversible exchange of the cryoprotectant and water at the interface, resulting in exceptional antifrosting, antiadhesion, and deicing properties with long-term durability. The replenishable coating shows superlubrication to the surface ice with a sliding angle up to 1.9 ± 0.4<sup>o</sup> and a frost delay time up to 970 ± 31 min in the presence of water spray (99% relative humidity) at subzero temperatures. Fabrication of a durable anti-icing composite coating based on polyurethane elastomer and silica nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to design and fabricate hydrophobic, durable and anti-icing coating for aircraft, a polyurethane elastomer matrix was hydrophobically modified and incorporated with fluorinated SiO2 nanoparticles to prepare a micro/nanostructured coating. The micro/nanostructured coating with low surface energy displayed significantly improved mechanical properties and hydrophobicity, which exhibited the water contact angle of 162° as well as the sliding angle of 2°. The coating is highly stretchable, which could sustain large-scale extension, and exhibits tensile strength and elongation at break up to 16.22 MPa and 385 %, respectively. Furthermore, the coating exhibited a remarkably weak ice adhesion strength of 14.33 kPa, on which the accumulative ice is prone to fall off under natural wind and its own weight. The coating sustained long-term superhydrophobic properties and anti-icing performance even after 1000 abrasion cycles. The proposed method for the production of scalable superhydrophobic coating is cost-effective and can be applied in aerospace and automotive anti-icing systems.

Abstract:The increase of shipping in extreme environments brings new requirements for anticorrosion and anti-icing measures. Superhydrophobic and super-slippery coatings have been considered as ideal materials to address both of these requirements, but challenges remain for large-scale preparation, robust microstructures, and long-term stability. Herein, inspired by superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused surfaces (LISs), a simple, high-efficiency, environmentally friendly approach is proposed for preparing LISs consisting of expandable microspheres. The LISs are able to repel water (contact angle of ∼103°) and have superior sliding behavior (∼4–5 mm/s), super-low ice adhesion strength (5.92 kPa), and excellent physical resistance to corrosive media (e.g., after immersion for 90 days, the low-frequency Z0.01 Hz was 1011 Ω·cm2). Expandable microspheres with solvent and water resistance were incorporated into the coating to reduce heat transfer and act as a physical barrier to block corrosive media. Furthermore, the rough surface achieved after foaming enabled the formation of a continuous and uniform overlay of a lubricant layer, giving excellent antifouling, anti-icing, and anticorrosion properties. The durability of the LISs was evaluated by icing and deicing cycles, during which ice adhesion was super low and remained stable. After 20 icing-deicing cycles, the lubricant layer thickness, contact angle, and sliding behavior were calculated, demonstrating durability and long service life. The Van der Waals force between polydimethylsiloxane and the silicone oil was −3345 kJ/mol, which played an important role in the durability of the LIS surfaces. These LIS surfaces based on expandable microspheres have potential applications in extreme environments, with easy and scalable preparation.

Abstract:A heat exchange interface at subzero temperature in a water vapor environment, exhibits high probability of frost formation due to freezing condensation, a factor that markedly decreases the heat transfer efficacy due to the considerable thermal resistance of ice. Here we report a novel strategy to delay ice nucleation on these types of solid-water vapor interfaces. With a process-driven mechanism, a self-generated liquid intervening layer immiscible to water, is deposited on a textured superhydrophobic surface and acts as a barrier between the water vapor and the solid substrate. This liquid layer imparts remarkable slippery conditions resulting in high mobility of condensing water droplets. A large increase of the ensuing ice coverage time is shown compared to the cases of standard smooth hydrophilic or textured superhydrophobic surfaces. During deicing of these self-impregnating surfaces we show an impressive tendency of ice fragments to skate expediting defrosting. Robustness of such surfaces is also demonstrated by operating them under subcooling for at least 490hr without a marked degradation. This is attributed to the presence of the liquid intervening layer, which protects the substrate from hydrolyzation enhancing longevity and sustaining heat transfer efficiency.
