Abstract:The Walvis Ridge is a volcanic chain with the most pronounced topographic anomaly in the South Atlantic. This study analyzes the factors influencing magma production rates along the ridge to provide insights into hotspotlithosphere interactions. With the sub-lithospheric gravity effect excluded, we determine the crustal thickness in the South Atlantic via gravity inversion. By subtracting the age-averaged crustal thickness, we isolate the excess crustal thickness attributable to ridge magmatism and calculate the magma generation rate along the Walvis Ridge over the past 80 Ma. Our results reveal a relatively lower magma production rate in the Walvis Ridge (peaking at -2.5 m 3 /s) compared to other major hotspot tracks (e.g. Hawaii-Emperor seamount chain, Ninetyeast Ridge, or Deccan-Reunion hotspot). Furthermore, variations in magma production rate show a strong inverse correlation with lithospheric thickness (or crustal age) at the time of loading but no significant correlation with spreading rate. Extensively distributed fracture zones in the lithosphere also promote magma production during the period of -70 - 40 Ma. Together with previously identified spreading-type magmatism in the northeast Walvis Ridge, we infer that external tectonic factors, other than hotspot-related factors, play a crucial role in magma production rate across the entire Walvis Ridge.
Thermal Structures of the Pacific Lithosphere from Magnetic Anomaly Inversion

Abstract:Of the world’s oceans, the Pacific has the most abundant distribution of seamount trails, oceanic plateaus and hot spots, and has the longest fracture zones. However, little is known of their thermal structures due to difficulties of heat flow measurement and interpretation, and in inferring thermal anomalies from low-resolution seismic velocities. Using recently published global magnetic models, we present the first independent constraint on Pacific geothermal state and mantle dynamics, by applying a fractal magnetization inversion model to magnetic anomaly data. Warm thermal anomalies are inferred for all known active hot spots, most seamount trails, some major fracture zones, and oceanic lithosphere between ~100 and ~140 Ma in age. While most Curie points are among the shallowest in the zone roughly bounded by the 20 Ma isochrons, abnormally deep Curie points are found along nearly all ridge crests in the Pacific, related to patchy, long-wavelength and large-amplitude magnetic anomalies that are most likely caused by prevailing magmatic or hydrothermal processes. Many large contrasts in the thermal evolution between the Pacific and North Atlantic support much stronger hydrothermal circulation occurring in Pacific lithospheres younger than ~60 Ma, which may have disguised from surface heat flow any deep thermal signatures of volcanic structures. Yet, at depths of the Curie points, our model argues for warmer Pacific lithosphere for crustal ages older than ~15 Ma, given a slightly higher spatial correlation of magnetization in the Pacific than in the North Atlantic.
Tectonic dismemberment of Shona Hotspot volcano: Insights from Sites 698, 699, 701, and 703 bulk-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic geochemistry

Abstract:A genetic link between the Georgia-Islas Orcadas and Meteor guyots on opposite sides of the South Atlantic was proposed based on seafloor morphology and tectonic reconstructions. Here we test this model with geochemistry. We present new major and trace element and Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf radiogenic isotope data from volcanic and sedimentary rocks from Meteor Rise (ODP Site 703) and Georgia-Islas Orcadas Rise (ODP Sites 698, 699, and 701). Site 698, 699 and 703 volcanic rocks have largely overlapping initial Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotope ratios (( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) i = 0.70278–0.70660; ( 143 Nd/ 144 Nd) i = 0.51217–0.51283; ( 206 Pb/ 204 Pb) i = 18.09–18.75; ( 176 Hf/ 177 Hf) i = 0.28246–0.28299), extending from the Shona Hotspot track field (consisting of Richardson guyot, Agulhas Ridge and Meteor guyot samples) towards Proterozoic continental crust. Site 701 samples have slightly depleted isotopic compositions similar to southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR) basalts, representing the upper mantle. These data support derivation from a common mantle plume, having formed contemporaneously as a single continuous hotspot track, which was subsequently divided by a ridge jump. Modelling of the isotope data show that binary mixing between an average Shona anomaly composition and an upper continental crustal component with a composition similar to the Site 698 sandstones can explain the data by 10–30% upper crustal assimilation to generate the composition of the Site 698, 699 and 703 volcanic rocks. Therefore, our geochemical data confirm the dismemberment of the Shona Hotspot track by a ridge jump and its subsequent seafloor spreading.

Abstract:Persistent, long‐lived, stationary sites of excessive mantle melting are called hotspots. Hotspots leave volcanic trails on lithospheric plates passing across them. The global constellation of fixed hotspots thus forms a convenient frame of reference for plate motions, through the orientations and age distributions of volcanic trails left by these melting anomalies. Hotspots appear to be maintained by whole‐mantle convection, in the form of upward flow through narrow plumes. Evidence suggests that plumes are deflected little by horizontal flow of the upper mantle. Mantle plumes are largely thermal features and arise from a thermal boundary layer, most likely the mantle layer just above the core‐mantle boundary. Experiments and theory show that gravitational instability drives flow, beginning with the formation of diapirs. Such a diapir will grow as it rises, fed by flow through the trailing conduit and entrainment of surrounding mantle. The structure thus develops a large, spherical plume head and a long, narrow tail. On arrival at the base of the lithosphere the plume head flattens and melts by decompression, producing enormous quantities of magma which erupt in a short period. These are flood basalt events that have occurred on continents and in ocean basins and that signal the beginning of major hotspot tracks. The plume‐supported hotspot reference frame is fixed in the steady state convective flow of the mantle and is independent of the core‐generated (axial dipole) paleomagnetic reference frame. Comparison of plate motions measured in the two frames reveals small but systematic differences that indicate whole‐mantle motion relative to the Earth's spin axis. This is termed true polar wander and has amounted to some 12° since early Tertiary time. The direction and magnitude of true polar wander have varied sporadically through the Mesozoic, probably in response to major changes in plate motions (particularly subduction zone location) that change the planet's moments of inertia.

Abstract:The geochemistry of oceanic intraplate (primarily oceanic island and seamount) lavas can provide essential information on the composition and evolution of their mantle source and geodynamics. Due to very limited rock sampling of the many mid-Cretaceous Wake seamounts in NW Pacific, the mantle source lithology and petrogenesis of their lavas, and the geodynamic mechanism responsible for generating the lavas have not been fully delineated. In order to help resolve these issues, here we present whole-rock major-trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic data for twenty-one lava samples collected from Lamont, Dacheng, Xufu, Penglai, Niulang, Zhinyu, and Zhanlu seamounts in the Southern Wake seamount trail (WST). These lava samples are silica-undersaturated alkali basalt and basanites/nephelinite. They have high CaO, FeOT and TiO2 contents and CaO/Al2O3 ratios, consistent with their derivation from partial melting of a carbonated peridotite or reaction between carbonated MORB-eclogite-derived silicate melts and fertile peridotite. High Zr/Hf and negative Zr-Hf-Ti anomalies in the most mafic lavas further suggest a contribution from carbonated components in their mantle source. These lavas show FOZO (focal zone)-HIMU (high μ = 238U/204Pb)-like Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions (e.g., (206Pb/204Pb) i = 19.36–20.72), falling within the Arago (also known as “Young Rurutu” or “Atiu”) hotspot field. Combined with the sparse previous age and geochemical data, we propose that WST lavas were most likely derived from partial melting of secondary plume clusters emanating from the top of Arago mantle plume trapped at the mantle transition zone. Alternatively, WST lavas could have come from a number of secondary plumelets emanating from the top of the Pacific Large Low Shear Velocity Province (LLSVP). The simultaneously upwelling secondary plumes or plumelets generated chronologically overlapping, compositionally similar and closely-spaced Wake seamounts atop the moving Pacific plate.

Abstract:Paleolatitudes of volcanic rocks reveal that prominent changes in volcanic trend of the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot chain represent meridional migration of the magma source. However, models assuming latitudinal plume migration fail to explain the observed age distribution, rock composition, and erratic paleolatitude changes of the oldest Emperor seamounts. Here we use data-assimilation models to better reproduce the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot track by systematically considering plate reconstruction, plume-lithosphere interaction, and simplified melt generation and migration. Our results show that plate drag and plume-ridge interaction are both important in explaining the observed seamount ages. These shallow dynamic processes could account for 50% of the observed paleolatitude’s secular reduction and erratic variations over time, where the necessary southward migration of the Hawaiian plume root is significantly less than previously thought. We conclude that plume-lithosphere interaction represents a common mechanism in affecting hotspot track, and has important implications in understanding mantle dynamics and plate reference frames. Plume-ridge interaction modulates plume-lithosphere interaction and leads to hotspot track deviations and paleolatitude offsets in multiple hotspot chains, according to 3D data assimilation models focused on the Hawaii-Emperor hotspot track.
Anomalous Mantle Transition Zone Beneath the Yellowstone Hotspot Track

Abstract:The origin of the Yellowstone and Snake River Plain volcanism has been strongly debated. The mantle plume model successfully explains the age-progressive volcanic track, but a deep plume structure has been absent in seismic imaging. Here I apply diffractional tomography to receiver functions recorded at USArray stations to map high-resolution topography of mantle transition-zone discontinuities. The images reveal a trail of anomalies that closely follow the surface hotspot track and correlate well with a seismic wave-speed gap in the subducting Farallon slab. This observation contradicts the plume model, which requires anomalies in the mid mantle to be confined in a narrow region directly beneath the present-day Yellowstone caldera. I propose an alternative interpretation of the Yellowstone volcanism. About 16 million years ago, a section of young slab that had broken off from a subducted spreading centre in the mantle first penetrated the 660 km discontinuity beneath Oregon and Idaho, and pulled down older stagnant slab. Slab tearing occurred along pre-existing fracture zones and propagated northeastward. This reversed-polarity subduction generated passive upwellings from the lower mantle, which ascended through a water-rich mantle transition zone to produce melting and age-progressive volcanism.

Abstract:Magmatism at some intraplate volcanoes and large igneous provinces (LIPs) in continental areas may originate from hydrous mantle upwelling (i.e. a plume) from the mantle transition zone (MTZ) at 410–660 km depths in the Earth’s deep interior. However, the ultimate origin of the magmatism, i.e. why mantle plumes could have been generated at the MTZ, remains unclear. Here, we study the buoyancy of a plume by investigating basalts from the Changbaishan volcano, beneath which a mantle plume from the hydrous MTZ is observed via seismology. Based on carefully determined water contents of the basalts, the potential temperature of the source mantle is estimated to be 1310–1400 °C, which is within the range of the normal upper mantle temperature. This observation suggests that the mantle plume did not have a significant excess heat, and that the plume upwelled because of buoyancy resulting from water supplied from the Pacific slab in the MTZ. Such a hydrous mantle plume can account for the formation of extremely hydrous LIP magmatism. The water was originally sourced from a stagnant slab and stored in the MTZ, and then upwelled irrespective of the presence or absence of a deep thermal plume.
Anomalously hot mantle source beneath the Dragon Flag Supersegment of the Southwest Indian Ridge: New evidence from crystallisation temperatures of mid-ocean ridge basalts

Abstract:<p>Discontinuities in the magmatic activity along a spreading ridge are usually observed in ultraslow-spreading ridges with a thick crust. However, the reasons for such melting anomaly are unknown. The Dragon Flag Supersegment between the Indomed Fault Zone (FZ) and the Gallieni FZ on the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is characterised by ultra-thick oceanic crust (up to ~10 km), and it provides a unique opportunity for studying magmatic crustal accretion at an ultraslow-spreading ridge. We determined the compositions of olivine–spinel pairs in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) collected from Segments 25 and 28 of the SWIR to estimate the temperatures of crystallisation and investigate the source lithologies. The Al-in-olivine thermometer provided crystallisation temperatures that ranged from 1197 ± 37 to 1393 ± 21 °C. The 95th percentile calculated temperature (1345 °C) for the primitive olivine is ~75 °C hotter than for olivines in MORBs from normal ridges but comparable to the data for plume-related oceanic island basalts. The olivines have Fe/Mn ratios and Ni, Ca, and Mn contents that are similar to those of olivines in MORBs from normal ridges, which suggests their derivation from a peridotite-dominant source with little contribution from fertile mantle components. Our results suggest a hot mantle reservoir is present beneath the Dragon Flag Supersegment, and that it is probably related to a mantle plume.</p>

Abstract:The Sub-Antarctic South Atlantic Ocean has been inferred to have undergone a complex tectonic history involving dismemberment and plume-ridge interaction. Here we report new in situ major (electron probe microanalysis, EPMA), trace element (laser ablation−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectrometry, LA-ICP-MS), and Sr isotopic (laser ablation−multicollector−inductively coupled plasma−mass spectrometry, LA-MC-ICP-MS) compositions for minerals (olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase) from the Northeast Georgia Rise (NGR; Sites 698 and 699), Islas Orcadas Rise (IOR; Site 701), and Meteor Rise (MR; Site 703) volcanic samples in the Sub-Antarctic South Atlantic Ocean. Plagioclases and clinopyroxenes from Sites 698, 699, and 703 are characterized by similar incompatible element patterns and Sr isotopic characteristics, suggesting that they are likely to have originated from a cogenetic mantle source. The plagioclases and clinopyroxenes exhibit an oscillatory, reverse, and normal zoning texture, and display clear evidence of Sr isotopic disequilibrium, suggesting dynamic and open fractional-crystallization processes as well as extensive mixing of compositionally distinct magmas. Rims and groundmass of plagioclase exhibit much more highly radiogenic Sr isotopes than their cores, likely indicating the involvement of both continental lithospheric and recycled oceanic crust. The in situ geochemical and isotopic compositions of these minerals exhibit the features of both the oceanic-island basalt−type Tristan-Gough mantle plume track and the normal mid-oceanic-ridge basalt−type Mid-Atlantic spreading ridge (MAR) and Agulhas spreading ridge (AR) track. We speculate that the NGR, IOR, and MR were formed from the same mantle source with volcanic flow of the Tristan-Gough mantle plume. Subsequently, tectonic movement along the MAR and AR separated the originally combined MR-IOR-NGR, resulting in the incursion of depleted asthenospheric mantle and the contamination contributions of continental and recycled oceanic crust components.

Abstract:To advance our comprehension of the complex geological history and mantle dynamics in the North Atlantic region, we employ all available broadband seismic data recorded in Greenland to reveal an abnormal mantle transition zone (MTZ) structure. Central and eastern Greenland exhibits depressed 410 and 660 km discontinuities (d410 and d660, respectively) bordering the MTZ, indicative of a substantial thermal anomaly associated with an underlying plume, surpassing the 1,800°C threshold for post‐garnet phase transitions at the d660. Variations in MTZ thickness across Greenland stem from differing temperature anomalies at the d410 and d660, possibly linked to a tilted plume within the MTZ. These findings corroborate geodynamic models, elucidating the interaction between post‐garnet phase transitions and upwelling plumes. The results shed light on the origin of the enigmatic Icelandic hotspot track and its influence on the thermal and lithospheric structures beneath Greenland.

Abstract:Mantle plume and mid-ocean ridge (MOR) interactions have a profound impact on geological processes, such as large igneous province eruptions, mid-ocean ridge jumps and plume flow towards the MOR. The Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise provide an excellent opportunity to study these interactions, as they have a record of during- and post-interaction stages. We have estimated the hotspot melt production rate along the Walvis Ridge - Rio Grande Rise. Our findings are as follows: (1) The hotspot melt production rate during plume-MOR interaction is seven times higher than that after the interaction, primarily because a thinner lithospheric coverage over the plume allows for greater decompression melting and facilitates the ascent of melt through the lithospheric mantle to accrete to the crust. (2) The waning of the Tristan-Gough plume is indicated by a decreasing melt production rate and an increase in inter-volcano spacing. (3) The linear ridges on the western side of the Guyot Province likely result from mantle plume flow beneath the lithosphere from the hotspot to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. (4) Fracture zones enhance hotspot melt production rates.

Abstract:The Siberian-Icelandic hotspot track is the only preserved continental hotspot track. Although the track and its associated age progression between 160 Ma and 60 Ma are not yet well understood, this section of the track is closely linked to the tectonic evolution of Amerasian Basin, the Alpha-Mendeleev Ridge and Baffin Bay. Using paleomagnetic data, volcanic structures and marine geophysical data, the paleogeography of Arctic plates (Eurasian plate, North American Plate, Greenland Plate and Alaska Microplate) was reconstructed and the Siberian-Icelandic hotspot track was interlinked between 160 Ma and 60 Ma. Our results suggested that the Alpha-Mendeleev Ridge could be a part of the hotspot track that formed between 160 Ma and 120 Ma. During this period, the hotspot controlled the tectonic evolution of Baffin Bay and the distribution of mafic rock in Greenland. Throughout the Mesozoic Era, the aforementioned Arctic plates experienced clockwise rotation and migrated northeast towards the North Pacific. The vertical influence from the ancient Icelandic mantle plume broke this balance, slowing down some plates and resulting in the opening of several ocean basins. This process controlled the tectonic evolution of the Arctic.

Abstract:Continental intraplate volcano is an ideal probe to unravel the composition and structure of the deep Earth. The intraplate Changbaishan‐Tianchi volcano was one of the most hazardous eruptions on the Earth's planet. The long‐term activity of this volcano from the Pleistocene to 946 CE has erupted materials with a broad compositional range from basalt to rhyolite, which are expected to be associated with the continuous northeastward subduction of the Pacific plate, but the magma source remains controversial. In this paper, we present a comprehensive data set of in situ zircon Hf and O isotope data, combined with whole‐rock element and Sr‐Nd‐Pb isotope compositions, for selected eruptions of the Changbaishan‐Tianchi volcano, aiming to provide new insights into their magma source and the associated geodynamics. Radiogenic isotopic ratios and incompatible trace element compositions indicate that the erupted volcanic rocks at different stages, although with a varied differentiation degree, were derived from a common magma source characterized by a mixture of DM and EM1 end‐members. Zircon Hf and O isotopes are both relatively homogeneous for different lithologies and eruption stages, with the εHf(t) values varying between −5 and +5, and δ18O values between 3.58‰ and 5.97‰. Modeling of source mixing indicates that high‐temperature altered oceanic crust materials are an important component in the source of Changbaishan‐Tianchi volcano, likely derived from an ancient stagnant slab that has been reactivated by the subduction of the Pacific plate. This study demonstrates that the recycling of deeply subducted oceanic crust is potentially an important source and trigger for continental intraplate volcanism.

Abstract:The Fresnel approximation for off-axis illumination of a circular aperture is reexamined. The point-spread function for an aberration-free system can be expressed in terms of redefined optical coordinates. An improved expression is given for contours of constant intensity in the focal plane. The variation in axial width of the focal spot with angle of offset is discussed. The predictions are compared with exact calculations of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral. Limitations for application in deconvolution of microscope images formed with objectives of finite tube length are discussed.

In contrast with most of the rest of the subduction zone, the two segments, beneath central Chile, and central and northern Peru, lack active volcanoes along the crest of the Andes and have more subdued topography to the east of the Andean crest. Each low-angle subduction segment occurs to the east of the intersection of inferred mantle hotspot traces on the Nazca plate with the Peru-Chile Trench: the Nazca ridge (at the southern part of the Peruvian segment), and the Juan Fernández island-seamount chain (offshore the Chilean segment). A third inferred trace, the Galápagos-Carnegie ridge, may be correlated with a zone on incipient low-angle subduction beneath Colombia. The importance of such hotspot traces in contributing to low-angle subduction beneath the Andes is strengthened by updated South American-Nazca plate reconstructions, including three oceanic hotspot traces, in comparison with a new isotopic date compilation of igneous rocks from the mountain range. The Juan Fernández hotspot trace, reconstructed from Pacific-hotspot models to the Nazca-Farallon plate, encountered the subduction zone offshore southern Peru ~65 Ma, broadening arc volcanism to the east; the trace-trench intersection migrated gradually and then rapidly southward, widening the arc east to Bolivia and northern Argentina; it then stabilized about 13 Ma offshore central Chile, producing the contemporary low-angle Pampean segment. The Juan Fernández hotspot may also have been responsible for formation of the Manihiki Plateau on the Pacific plate much earlier, ~125 Ma. The Easter-Nazca hotspot trace intersected the subduction zone beneath Colombia before ~50 Ma and migrated southward beneath Ecuador beginning ~15 Ma, with progressive low-angle subduction implied by migrating volcanic cessation along the Andean crest to southern Peru. The Galápagos-Carnegie hotspot trace only recently encountered the subduction zone, apparently inducing a new low-angle segment and cessation of magmatism in Colombia. The reconstructions and magmatic history provided here strongly support a previously proposed genetic relationship of hotspot traces and low-angle subduction. Additionally, the reconstructions suggest remnants of older subducted traces in the asthenosphere may have sourced post-rift magmatism in eastern Brazil and Paraguay, which cannot be explained otherwise by simple hotspot mechanisms.

Abstract:The concurrence of both global orogenesis and large igneous provinces (LIPs) from 2200–1600 Ma remains enigmatic. This apparent contradiction of top-down and bottom-up geodynamics occurred during assembly of Earth's oldest-known supercontinent. We present a multidisciplinary study combining the dismembered portions of major LIP worldwide and correlate them across supercontinent Columbia to the same plume center (Xiong'er of the North China craton). The succession of LIPs is then used to trace the oldest established hotspot track associated with a pulsating plume constraining ancient plate motion. Subduction-controlled plume generation can explain mantle upwelling occurring where subducted slabs forming the supercontinent had previously sunk to the base of the mantle and advected the Xiong'er mantle plume due to return flow. Tectonic motion detected by the hotspot track can account for both those regions of the supercontinent with and without LIPs. Such historical constraints on the interaction between plumes and subduction are critical in linking bottom-up and top-down tectonic processes at the dawn of the supercontinent cycle.

Geochemical and chronological constraints on the origin and mantle source of Early Cretaceous arc volcanism on the Gagua Ridge in western Pacific

Abstract:The modern western Pacific basins and arcs formed during the Cenozoic are considered to be underlain by Indian‐type asthenospheric mantle. Nevertheless, Mesozoic volcanic arcs are rare in the western Pacific and, as a result, the nature of the mantle source and subduction history in the western Pacific remains unclear. The Gagua Ridge constitutes the western boundary of the Philippine Sea Plate; however, its geologic nature and genesis are unclear. Here we determine whole‐rock major and trace element and Sr‐Nd‐Pb‐Hf‐Mg isotopic compositions and emplacement ages of the volcanic rocks from the Gagua Ridge. These rocks are classified as trachy‐andesites and basaltic andesites. They are characterized by depletion in Nb‐Ta and enrichment in large ion lithosphile elements, confirming their arc affinity. 40Ar‐39Ar analyses of plagioclase yields ages of 124‐123 Ma for the basaltic andesite group and ∼115 Ma for the trachy‐andesite group. The elevated Zr‐Hf‐K of these rocks coupled with high Th/La ratios indicate melting of subducted sediments. The anomalously high Nb/Ta (mean ∼33) can be explained by slab melting with residual rutile. These rocks also show the highest δ26Mg (‐0.14‰ to 0.4‰) for arc lavas ever reported and the δ26Mg values are coupled with rare earth element compositions, which can be explained by interaction of sediment melts with altered peridotite/altered oceanic crust in the subduction zone. These volcanic rocks have Nd‐Hf isotopes similar to the Pacific mantle, indicating the presence of Pacific‐type mantle in the Early Cretaceous western Pacific. This article is protected by copyright. Generation and Modification of the Mantle Wedge and Lithosphere beneath the West Bismarck Island Arc: Melting, Metasomatism and Thermal History of Peridotite Xenoliths from Ritter Island

Abstract:Peridotite xenoliths dredged from the seafloor NW of Ritter Island in the West Bismarck island arc offer a rare insight into the petrogenetic processes operating in the upper mantle wedge of an active oceanic subduction zone. Harzburgitic xenoliths and subordinate dunites and pyroxenites display significant textural and compositional variability between samples, which are interpreted as fragments of heterogeneous mantle that has experienced a complex petrogenetic history. Based on textures and in situ major and trace element analyses of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene, five significant petrogenetic stages have been deduced. The first stage was a period of partial melting at temperatures >1100 °C in a previously active arc (probably the now extinct Vitiaz–West Melanesian arc), indicated by the high Mg# and Cr#, low Al2O3 and very low concentrations of incompatible trace elements in residual phases and the absence of residual clinopyroxene. Modelling the concentrations of Y and Yb in orthopyroxene indicates depletion by high degrees (∼30%) of wet fractional melting of a depleted mantle source. This was followed by metasomatism also related to this previous period of subduction, resulting in refertilization of the harzburgite residues with clinopyroxene and the formation of dunite and pyroxenite channels. Three populations of secondary clinopyroxene are identified based on their trace element compositions, with both light rare earth element (LREE)-depleted and (more unusually) sinusoidal REE patterns identified, indicating that a spectrum of fluid compositions was involved in the metasomatism. The third stage involved a period of cooling and chemical re-equilibration below the wet solidus, combined with decompression to shallow lithospheric mantle depths. Geothermometers with different closure temperatures reveal large temperature discrepancies, indicating that mantle cooling was both unusually extensive (down to ∼600 °C), but also very slow (∼20 °C Ma–1). The fourth stage marked the cessation of cooling and formation of the modern mantle wedge as part of the West Bismarck island arc. Silicate melts percolated through networks of veins and reacted with the residual mantle, generating a variety of new disequilibrium textures, most notably orthopyroxene–clinopyroxene–glass reaction patches. This was accompanied by increases in spinel Cr# and olivine trace element concentrations, and higher mineral–mineral temperatures. These disequilibrium textures were preserved through the final stage of entrainment in the host basalt and rapid transport to the seafloor. The Ritter suite thus provides a remarkably detailed insight into the broad diversity of melt–fluid compositions and fluid–rock reaction processes in oceanic sub-arc mantle. Several of these features can be found both in other samples of sub-arc mantle and also in cratonic mantle, demonstrating the ubiquity of such processes beneath modern arcs and also the potential genetic relationship between subduction-zone processes and the formation of cratons. In this way, sub-arc xenoliths such as the Ritter suite, although at present under-sampled, can provide crucial insights for understanding the relationship between the mechanisms by which modern arc systems are generated and evolve and the nature of the upper mantle once subduction processes have ceased.

Abstract:The generation of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) is a topic of vigorous debate with competing models variably invoking hot mantle plumes, insulative heating by supercontinents or edge driven convective instabilities. Mantle temperature and its temporal variation during LIP magmatism is key to distinguishing between these different models. This may have important consequences for the dynamics, evolution and tempo of volcano-magmatic systems developed during these periods of intense activity. Despite this, there are currently no detailed stratigraphically constrained studies of mantle temperature through a LIP succession. To address this, we have applied both olivine-spinel thermometry and modelling of primary magma compositions (Monte Carlo PRIMELT3) to constrain mantle potential temperature through a continuous sequence of LIP lavas formed during the earliest expression of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (the Antrim Lava Group). Mantle potential temperature derived from olivine-spinel and olivine addition methods give consistent temperature ranges of 1403–1521 °C and 1374–1472 °C, respectively. However, both temperature records indicate significant (100–120 °C) variation in melting temperature over a relatively short stratigraphic interval during petrogenesis of early magmas and much less variation in later magmas, suggesting initial instability or pulsing which stabilised with time. This supports a plume origin for LIP formation. Variability in melting temperature is mirrored by proxies for crustal and volcanic processes; olivine Ni contents are elevated (<3000 ppm) in the same stratigraphic interval as the lowest mantle temperatures, indicating mixing of primary and more evolved (MgO ∼4 %) melts, resulting from low magmatic flux into the crust during this time interval. The abundance and thickness of red weathering horizons capping lava flows is also significantly higher through the succession where mantle temperature variation is highest, indicating prolonged repose periods between eruption and a stop-start rhythm to volcanism. These unique observations indicate that volcanic, crustal and mantle systems are intrinsically linked and suggest that the tempo of volcanism, mediated via variations in melt flux, may ultimately be driven from below by changing mantle temperature.
