Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of adaptive tracking control for quadcopter in the presence of nonlinear configuration uncertainties. It utilizes a real-time brain-inspired learning control (RBiLC) method to address the challenges posed by nonlinear time-varying uncertain instructions. To address the issue of flight control law reconfiguration caused by unknown changes in the fuselage configuration (e.g., propellers or motors), this paper introduces an online learning-evaluation-optimization reconstruction mechanism based on RBiLC. The proposed adaptive learning controller mitigates the need for extensive human resources and reduces the time required for flight controller design. The Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is introduced as a compensatory measure to address the impact of parameter uncertainty on system stability. Furthermore, this paper proposes a signed sinusoidal function perturbation estimate to guide the direction and magnitude throughout the online learning process. The approach conducts a theoretical stability analysis on a quadcopter vehicle considering uncertainties in UAV dynamics modeling. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves superior control and faster adaptation, enabling the system to ultimately converge to a compact set within a limited time domain. Finally, software-in-the-loop (SITL) simulations and flight verification results are presented to validate the proposed control strategy

Abstract:This paper presents classic and knowledge-based intelligent controllers for regulation of a vibratory MEMS accelerometer. The proposed methods comprise Fuzzy type I (FTI), Fuzzy type II (FTII) and Full-state-feedback (FSF) control systems. An ideal model of sensor under FSF controller is used to generate the required reference data to train if-then rule-base and Membership functions (MFs) of both fuzzy controllers. Through feeding the reference data as well as the FTI/FTII output into an Adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), the rules and MFs of the FTI/FTII system are updated. The control systems are realized by adding a Kalman filter (KF) loop to the force-balancing method for estimation of state variables and input acceleration. Stochastic noises are filtered out while keeping good tracking performance of MEMS accelerometer and reducing the displacement of the mass under the closed-loop ANFIS-KF structure.

Abstract:This paper presents a robust adaptive sliding mode control strategy using radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN) for a class of time varying system in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbance. Adaptive RBF neural network controller that can learn the unknown upper bound of model uncertainties and external disturbances is incorporated into the adaptive sliding mode control system in the same Lyapunov framework. The proposed adaptive sliding mode controller can on line update the estimates of system dynamics. The asymptotical stability of the closed-loop system, the convergence of the neural network weight-updating process, and the boundedness of the neural network weight estimation errors can be strictly guaranteed. Numerical simulation for a MEMS triaxial angular velocity sensor is investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive RBF sliding mode control scheme.

Abstract:This paper designs an interval type-2 fuzzy neural network sliding mode robust controller (IT2FNNSMRC) to improve the stability of the vibrational angle of the orbital plane in magnetic rigid spacecraft attitude control. The control system consists of an interval type-2 fuzzy neural network (IT2FNN) controller, a PD controller, and a robust controller in parallel connection. The IT2FNN controller, as a nonlinear regulator, compensates the nonlinearity of the controlled object; the PD controller, as a feedback controller, ensures the global asymptotic stability of the control system; the robust controller inhibits input load disturbance. The IT2FNN controller hereof has a self-organizing function which enables it to automatically determine the network structure and parameters online. At the stage of IT2FNN structure learning, the standard on rule growth is set according to the incentive intensities of IT2FNN rule premises. A new rule is generated when the incentive intensities of rules are all smaller than a certain threshold; next, a significance index is set for each rule. When the significance index of some rule decays to a certain threshold, the corresponding rule shall be deleted to achieve the goals of optimizing IT2FNN structure and reducing system complexity. At the stage of parameter learning, adaptive adjustment of IT2FNN parameters is made via the sliding mode control theory learning algorithm, and the stabilities of the algorithm and control system are proven using Lyapunov function. Finally, the proposed control scheme is used in the control of a magnetic rigid spacecraft, as compared to three other designed control methods. Simulation results show that IT2FNNSMRC has superior control precision and stability. And the IT2FNN which adopts the proposed learning algorithm can address uncertainty satisfactorily, with higher computational implementability.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to design a hybrid robust tracking controller based on an improved radial basis function artificial neural network (IRBFANN) and a novel extended-state observer for a quadrotor system with various model and parametric uncertainties and external disturbances to enhance the resiliency of the control system. Design/methodology/approach An IRBFANN is introduced as an adaptive compensator tool for model and parametric uncertainties in the control algorithm of non-singular rapid terminal sliding-mode control (NRTSMC). An exact-time extended state observer (ETESO) augmented with NRTSMC is designed to estimate the unknown exogenous disturbances and ensure fast states convergence while overcoming the singularity issue. The novelty of this work lies in the online updating of weight parameters of the RBFANN algorithm by using a new idea of incorporating an exponential sliding-mode effect, which makes a remarkable effort to make the control protocol adaptive to uncertain model parameters. A comparison of the proposed scheme with other conventional schemes shows its much better performance in the presence of parametric uncertainties and exogenous disturbances. Findings The investigated control strategy presents a robust adaptive law based on IRBFANN with a fast convergence rate and improved estimation accuracy via a novel ETESO. Practical implications To enhance the safety level and ensure stable flight operations by the quadrotor in the presence of high-order complex disturbances and uncertain environments, it is imperative to devise a robust control law. Originality/value A new idea of incorporating an exponential sliding-mode effect instead of conventional approaches in the algorithm of the RBFANN is used, which makes the control law resistant to model and parametric uncertainties. The ETESO provides rapid and accurate disturbance estimation results and updates the control law to overcome the performance degradation caused by the disturbances. Simulation results depict the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:Radial basis function (RBF) neural networks have the advantages of excellent ability for the learning of the processes and certain immunity to disturbances when using in control systems. The robust trajectory tracking control of complex underactuated mechanical systems is a difficult problem that requires effective approaches. In particular, adaptive RBF neural networks are a good candidate to deal with that type of problems. In this document, a new method to solve the problem of trajectory tracking of an underactuated control moment gyroscope is addressed. This work is focused on the approximation of the unknown function by using an adaptive neural network with RBF fully tuned. The stability of the proposed method is studied by showing that the trajectory tracking error converges to zero while the solutions of the internal dynamics are bounded for all time. Comparisons between the model-based controller, a cascade PID scheme, the adaptive regressor-based controller, and an adaptive neural network-based controller previously studied are performed by experiments with and without two kinds of disturbances in order to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:This article proposes a serial-parallel estimation model (SPEM)-based sliding mode control (SMC) of MEMS gyroscope. For the system nonlinearity, the linear-in-parameterized dynamics are formulated and the updating law of the parameter vector is given. For the system uncertainty, the radial basis function (RBF) neural network (NN) is utilized. To improve the approximation accuracy of the compound nonlinearity, the updating laws of the parameter vector and RBF NN weight are constructed by the tracking error and the filtered modeling error derived from SPEM. Furthermore, the fast terminal (FT) SMC is employed to achieve finite-time convergence. The simulation results show that the proposed controller obtains higher tracking accuracy and faster convergence, while the compound nonlinearity approximation is with higher precision.

Abstract:This article proposes a fractional order nonsingular terminal super-twisting sliding mode control (FONT-STSMC) method for a micro gyroscope with unknown uncertainty based on the double-loop fuzzy neural network (DLFNN). First, the advantages of nonsingular terminal sliding control are adopted, a nonlinear function is used to design the sliding hyper plane, then the tracking error in the system could converge to zero in a specified finite time. Second, fractional order control can increase the order of differential and integral, which greatly improves the flexibility of control method. The fractional-order controller has some advantages that integer-order systems cannot achieve, thus obtaining better control effects than that without adding fractional order control. Furthermore, the chattering problem of control input can be effectively solved by using the super-twisting algorithm, which makes the control input smoother. Finally, the unknown model of the micro gyroscope is estimated by using the DLFNN. Because the DLFNN can adjust the base width, the center vector and the feedback gain of the inner and outer layers adaptively, the accurate approximation of the unknown model can be achieved, and the robustness and accuracy can be enhanced. The simulation results and the comparisons with conventional neural sliding mode control prove the presented scheme can realized better tracking property and estimate the unknown model more accurately.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive dynamic sliding-mode control system (ADSMCS) with recurrent radial basis function network (RRBFN) for indirect field-orientation control induction motor (IM) drive is proposed. The ADSMCS comprises a dynamic sliding-mode controller (DSMC), an RRBFN uncertainty observer and a robust controller. The DSMC is proposed to reduce the chattering phenomenon. However, due to the uncertainty bound being unknown of the switching function for the DSMC, an ADSMCS is proposed to increase the robustness and improve the control performance of IM drive. In the ADSMCS, an RRBFN uncertainty observer is used to estimate an unknown nonlinear time-varying function of lumped parameter uncertainty online. Moreover, the adaptive learning algorithms for the RRBFN are derived using the Lyapunov stability theorem to train the parameters of the RRBFN online. Furthermore, a robust controller is proposed to confront the uncertainties including approximation error, optimal parameter vector and higher order term in Taylor series. A computer simulation and an experimental system are developed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed ADSMCS. All control algorithms are implemented in a TMS320C31 DSP-based control computer. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the ADSMCS grants robust performance and precise response regardless of load disturbances and IM uncertainties.

Abstract:In this article, a nonlinear robust optimal control (NROC) scheme for uncertain two-axis motion control system via adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) and neural networks (NNs) is proposed. The two-axis motion control system is an X–Y table actuated by permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor servo drives. First, the motions of the tracking contour in X-axis and Y-axis of the X–Y table are stabilized through feedback linearization control (FLC) laws. However, the control performance may be destroyed due to parameter uncertainties and compounded disturbances. Therefore, to improve the robustness of the control system, an NROC is designed to achieve this purpose. The tracking control problem of the X–Y table with uncertainties is transformed to a regulation problem. Then, it is solved by an infinite horizon optimal control using a critic NN. Consequently, the NN is developed via ADP learning algorithm to facilitate the online solution of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation corresponding to the nominal system for approximating the optimal control law. The uniform ultimate boundedness of the closed-loop system is proved utilizing the Lyapunov approach and the tracking error asymptotically converges to a residual set. The validation of the proposed control schemes are carried out through experimental analysis. The control algorithms have been implemented using a DSP control board. A comparison of control performances using FLC, adaptive FLC, and FLC-based NROC is investigated. From the experimental results, the dynamic behaviors of the two-axis control system using the proposed FLC-based NROC can achieve robust optimal control performance against parameter uncertainties and compounded disturbances.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the neural adaptive quantized control problem for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope with full-state constraints and lumped disturbances. With two different kinds of one-to-one nonlinear mappings, the traditional gyroscope model with matched disturbances is transformed into an unconstrained one with both unmatched and matched disturbances, thus the predefined time-varying state constraints imposed on MEMS gyroscope can be achieved. To compensate for the lumped disturbances, a state estimator-based minimal learning parameter neural network is proposed to obtain fast and smooth disturbance estimates for both position and velocity control loops, which not only can eliminate the poor transient behaviors that widely appear in the available neural adaptive control with a large adaptive gain, but also greatly reduce the number of leaning parameters updated online. Furthermore, by employing a hysteresis logarithmic quantizer, the neglected difficulty, named as constrained data bandwidth of actuator can be overcome with less chattering in control signal, which is more convenient to implement. Finally, the neural adaptive control for MEMS gyroscope is developed such that satisfactory tracking performance is achieved despite of large disturbances, full-state constraints as well as quantized input. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed control method are demonstrated through extensive simulations.

Abstract:The efficient driving control of MEMS gyroscopes is an attractive way to improve the precision without hardware redesign. This paper investigates the sliding mode control (SMC) for the dynamics of MEMS gyroscopes using neural networks (NNs). Considering the existence of the dynamics uncertainty, the composite neural learning is constructed to obtain higher tracking precision using the serial–parallel estimation model (SPEM). Furthermore, the nonsingular terminal SMC (NTSMC) is proposed to achieve finite-time convergence. To obtain the prescribed performance, a time-varying barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) is introduced to the control scheme. Through simulation tests, it is observed that under the BLF-based NTSMC with composite learning design, the tracking precision of MEMS gyroscopes is highly improved.

Abstract:Ensuring robust and precise tracking control in the presence of uncertain multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system dynamics and environmental variations is a significant challenge in the field of robust and adaptive control theory. While fuzzy control strategies have demonstrated good tracking performance in normal conditions, designing and tuning fuzzy controllers can be a challenging task in highly uncertain environments. In this study, we investigate a novel approach that combines robust nonlinear negative-imaginary (NI) systems theory with a self-adaptive fuzzy control scheme and the Lyapunov synthesis to develop a robust adaptive negative-imaginary-fuzzy (RANIF) control scheme. We optimize the critical parameters of the proposed fuzzy system using a self-tuning technique with a proportional-derivative sliding manifold. Furthermore, unlike the existing adaptive fuzzy control methods, we propose a small number of membership functions and systematically derive the fuzzy rules by employing Lyapunov, nonlinear NI, and dissipativity theories, which simplify the tuning process, work out the matter of "explosion of complexity", and reduce computational complexity. We demonstrate the global stability of the closed-loop system using nonlinear NI theory. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed approach, we present simulation results for two examples involving uncertain MIMO second-order Euler-Lagrange systems. These systems, known for their capacity to represent a diverse range of practical physical systems, serve as suitable testbeds for our methodology. Our results show that RANIF outperforms other control methods, such as nonlinear strictly NI-Fuzzy, fuzzy-logic control, model predictive control, and conventional PID control, in terms of robustness to disturbances and inestimable faults, trajectory tracking performance, and computational complexity.

Abstract:A robust fuzzy neural network (RFNN) sliding-mode control based on computed torque control design for a two-axis motion control system is proposed in this paper. The two-axis motion control system is an $x{-}y$ table composed of two permanent-magnet linear synchronous motors. First, a single-axis motion dynamics with the introduction of a lumped uncertainty including cross-coupled interference between the two-axis mechanism is derived. Then, to improve the control performance in reference contours tracking, the RFNN sliding-mode control system is proposed to effectively approximate the equivalent control of the sliding-mode control method. Moreover, the motions at $x$-axis and $y$-axis are controlled separately. Using the proposed control, the motion tracking performance is significantly improved, and robustness to parameter variations, external disturbances, cross-coupled interference, and friction force can be obtained as well. Furthermore, the proposed control algorithms are implemented in a TMS320C32 DSP-based control computer. From the simulated and experimental results due to circle and four leaves reference contours, the dynamic behaviors of the proposed control systems are robust with regard to uncertainties.

Abstract:In this article, a neural-network-based constrained output-feedback control is considered for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscopes subject to scarce transmission bandwidth and lumped disturbances resulting from model uncertainties, dynamic coupling, and environmental disturbances. First, a hybrid quantizer capable of achieving an adjustable communication rate and quantization density is proposed to convert continuous control signals into discrete values, allowing for reduced chattering behavior even when control actions vary within large regions and enhanced tracking accuracy can be ensured. Subsequently, by applying two types of nonlinear mapping, all state variables of MEMS gyroscopes are restrained within the predefined time-varying asymmetric functions without imposing stringent feasibility conditions on virtual control laws. Furthermore, an echo-state network-based minimal learning parameter neural observer is developed to simultaneously recover the unmeasurable velocity-state variables, matched as well as unmatched disturbances in constrained MEMS gyroscopes dynamics, enabling an output-feedback control solution with a decreased online learning complexity. It is shown via the Lyapunov stability and nonsmooth analysis that all signals in the closed-loop system remain ultimately uniformly bounded even with discontinuous control actions. Comparison simulations are produced to certify the effectiveness of the presented controller.

Abstract:In this paper, a new adaptive super-twisting sliding mode control (STSMC) scheme based on a double loop fuzzy neural network (DLFNN) is proposed to solve the problem of the external disturbances and approximate the unknown model for a micro gyroscopes. The STSMC algorithm can effectively suppress chattering since it can hide the high-frequency switching part in the high-order derivative of the sliding mode variable and transfer the discrete control law to the high-order sliding mode surface. Because it not only combines the advantages of fuzzy systems, but also incorporates the advantages of neural network control, the proposed double loop fuzzy neural network can better approximate the system model with excellent approximation. Moreover, it has the advantage of full adjustment, and the initial values of all parameters in the network can be arbitrarily set, then the parameters can be adjusted to the optimal stable value adaptively according to the adaptive algorithm. Finally, the superiority of the STSMC algorithm is also discussed. Simulation results verify the superiority of the STSMC algorithm, showing it can improve system performance and estimate unknown models more accurately compared with conventional neural network sliding mode control (CNNSMC).

Abstract:Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. Research on initial errors and constraint restrictions is one of the main research directions in the field of control of uncertain robotic systems. An adaptive iterative learning control (AILC) method based on radial basis function (RBF) neural network is proposed to address the trajectory tracking problem of the long-stroke hybrid robot system with random initial errors and full state constraints. The RBF neural network is used to approximate the unknown nonlinear terms, and the network weights are updated using an iterative learning law that incorporates a projection mechanism. Additionally, a robust learning strategy is used to compensate for both the approximation error of the neural network and the external disturbances that vary with each iteration. To relax the requirement of traditional iterative learning control (ILC) for identical initial condition, an equivalent error function is constructed based on the time-varying boundary layer. The tangent-type barrier Lyapunov function (BLF) is designed to ensure that the joint position and speed of the robot system are bounded within a predetermined range. Through stability analysis based on barrier composite energy function (BCEF), it can be proved that the boundedness of all signals in the closed-loop system and the tracking error of the robot system will converge to an adjustable residual set asymptotically. Finally, through simulation experiments conducted on the MATLAB platform, the results demonstrate that the method overcomes the random initial errors of the system effectively, ensures that the system satisfies the full-state constraints, and realizes high-precision trajectory tracking.
