Abstract:Propionibacterium arabinosum is known to produce an adeninylcobamide when grown in a medium containing yeast extract or corn steep-liquor (I, 2). Such a medium, although not intentionally fortified with a heterocyclic base, undoubtedly contains substantial amounts of adenine or its derivatives. Addition of an appropriate benzimidazole, purine, or other heterocyclic base to the medium, or to a suspension of washed bacteria (1, 2), results in more or less complete replacement of the adenine moiety of the cobamide by the added base. Consequently, if P. arobinosum, like Clostridium tetanomorphum, is able to synthesize the adeninylcobamide coenzyme, it should also be able under suitable conditions to synthesize a variety of other cobamide coenzyme analogues. Such a “directed synthesis” of 5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolylcobamide and benzimidazolylcobamide coenzymes by C. tetanomorphum has previously been reported (3, 4). This paper describes the purification and some properties of several additional cobamide coenzymes obtained from cells of P. arabinosum exposed to various heterocyclic bases.
Facial skin rejuvenation by autologous dermal microfat transfer in photoaged patients: Clinical evaluation and skin surface digital profilometry analysis

Abstract:Cumulative long-term exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation promotes premature skin aging characterized by wrinkle formation and reduced skin elasticity. In this study, we assessed whether microfat transfer could improve dermal and subcutaneous tissue thickness loss associated with photoaging. Twenty-one patients affected by facial photoaging (photodamage grade II-IV; age range 35-62 years; 19 females, 2 males; all of Caucasian origin) were treated using minimally invasive autologous dermal white fat transfer harvested with a recently designed microcannula. The results were determined by clinical assessment and patient self-evaluation and quantified by the Antera 3D® dermal digital device for noninvasive, objective, reliable, and accurate assessment of facial skin texture, color, and wrinkle characteristics. Compared with the pretreatment condition, the increment in soft tissue volume and improvement in skin quality and texture were assessed by a dermatologist after treatment. In addition, instrumental evaluation by digital skin profilometry of the treated areas revealed a 41% reduction in average wrinkle depth (7.29 ± 1.04 × 10-2 mm pretreatment vs. 4.31 ± 1.16 × 10-2 mm at 90 days posttreatment; p < 0.001), improved skin texture, more homogeneous and uniform skin color, and declined facial hemoglobin and melanin concentrations. The majority of patients (above 90%) reported improvements in self-perception. No significant complications were reported throughout the study. In conclusion, by using digital profilometry analysis as an objective and innovative tool to determine the outcome of treatment, we demonstrated that autologous microfat transfer is a safe and well-tolerated procedure with measurable beneficial effects on facial skin aging.
Infraorbital Rejuvenation Combined with Thread-Lifting and Non-cross-linked Hyaluronic Acid Injection: A Retrospective, Case-Series Study

Abstract:Abstract Background Infraorbital aging develops during the natural aging process. Various treatment options offer unique benefits, accompanied by diverse side effect profiles, and can be synergistically combined to optimize results. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a comprehensive approach involving non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid injection and smooth absorbable PPDO (poly p -dioxanone) thread insertion for infraorbital rejuvenation. Methods This retrospective case series study enrolled ten female patients with infraorbital aging from March 2022 to April 2023. Clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and adverse events were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months posttreatment. Results The median Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale scores evaluated by the operator and blinded evaluator were 1.70 ± 0.42 and 1.80 ± 0.35, respectively, at six months posttreatment. The median Allergan Infraorbital Hollows Scale determined by the operator was 1.15 ± 0.34 at six months posttreatment, whereas the scores evaluated by the blinded evaluator were 1.15 ± 0.53. At six months after treatment, 50% of patients were satisfied, and an additional 40% reported strong satisfaction with the clinical improvement following treatment. No serious adverse events, such as infections, lumps, irregularities, Tyndall effect, hematoma, or skin necrosis, occurred during the treatment period. Conclusions The combination of PPDO thread insertion and non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid injection yielded satisfactory and effective clinical outcomes with no occurrence of serious adverse events for infraorbital rejuvenation. We anticipate that this study will contribute to the advancement of novel treatment options for infraorbital aging. Abstract:Background To evaluate the efficacy and safety of stromal vascular fraction (SVF), platelet rich plasma (PRP), and 1064‐nm Q‐switched Nd:YAG laser in reducing nanofat treated dark circles and wrinkles under the eyes. Method This study was a single‐blinded randomized clinical trial conducted on patients with suborbital darkening under the eyes that randomly divided into control and case groups. In the control group, 15 patients were treated with one session of nanofat injection only, and five patients of each intervention groups received one session of nanofat+SVF injection, nanofat+PRP injection, and nanofat injection+Nd:YAG laser, respectively. Assessments methods were (1) evaluation of the degree of darkness and repair under the eyes by a blinded dermatologist based on clinical photographs, (2) investigating patient satisfaction, (3) using biometric variables for color, thickness, and density of the skin (only 3 months after the treatment), and (4) recording the possible adverse effects. Conclusion In terms of the extent of reduction in the intensity of darkness under the eyes, the combined treatment of nanofat injection together with SVF, PRP, and Nd:YAG laser had a much greater therapeutic effect than nanofat injection alone. In all three groups of combined treatments, patients were 100% satisfied. In terms of biometric variables, amount of changes in colorimeter, complete and dermal thickness, complete and dermal density, between the different groups was statistically significant. The use of combined treatments including nanofat with SVF injection, PRP, and 1064 Q‐switched Nd:YAG laser may be more effective than nanofat alone, in reducing infraorbital dark circles and wrinkles.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The periorbital area plays an important role cosmetically. Periorbital wrinkles are attributed to long-term, repeated use of orbicularis oris muscles and UV-induced dermal collagen degeneration. Fractional microneedle radiofrequency (RF) treats scars and laxity by creating vertical channels of injury in the dermis, triggering a scarless healing cascade and neocollagenesis.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and safety of a novel fractional microneedle RF device on periorbital wrinkles based on several objective indicators.METHODS: Eleven healthy Korean patients aged 30 to 75 years with periorbital wrinkles were included in this study. Wrinkle grades were evaluated using the Fitzpatrick wrinkle assessment scale (WAS). The melanin and erythema index, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and three parameters for elasticity were recorded. Skin biopsies were obtained in patients who consented.RESULTS: All patients exhibited wrinkle improvement in the lateral periorbital area, and two patients also showed efficacy in the lower eyelid area. There was a statistically significant decrease in WAS and a significant improvement in the melanin index of V4 and V5. TEWL also showed a considerable decline on V4 and V5, suggesting that the water content of the skin increased with repeated laser sessions. A peak increase in viscoelasticity and a decrease in retraction time following the first laser application were observed. In the histopathologic examination, the dermis had a denser collagen and elastin content.CONCLUSION: Microneedle fractional RF resulted in statistically significant long-term clinical improvement of periorbital wrinkles and enhanced pigmentation and skin hydration.

Efficacy, safety and complications of autologous fat grafting to the eyelids and periorbital area: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background In recent years, autologous fat grafting (AFG), also known as fat transfer or lipofilling, has been widely performed for periorbital rejuvenation and defect correction, although the evidence regarding its efficacy and safety is still lacking. Besides, with respect to the periorbital region, it is invariably the earliest appearance area of the facial aging phenomenon. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis is needed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this technique. Methods A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library databases on November 20, 2020, adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, to identify all relevant articles. Then, a data extraction and standardization process was performed to assess all outcome data. Ultimately, the data were assessed using a random effects regression model with comprehensive meta-analysis software. Results Thirty-nine studies consisting of 3 cohorts and 36 case series with a total of 4046 cases were included. Meta-analysis revealed a relatively high satisfaction rate of 90.9% (95% CI, 86.4%–94.0%). Frequent complications in 4046 patients receiving AFG were edema, chemosis, and contour irregularity, with an overall complication rate of 7.9% (95% CI, 4.8%–12.8%). Conclusion This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that AFG for rejuvenation of eyelids and periorbital area provided a high satisfaction rate and did not result in severe complications. Therefore, AFG might be performed safely for periorbital rejuvenation and reconstruction.

Clinical, biometric, and ultrasound assessment of the effects of the autologous fibroblast cells transplantation on nasolabial fold wrinkles

Abstract:Background: Feeling beautiful and staying young have always been important to the people. Therefore, an extensive body of research has focused on the efforts made to remove the skin problems, especially wrinkles. Fibroblast cells of the skin are the various autologous cells currently used in repairing several wounds, scars, and skin aging. Thus, the present study was conducted to assess the efficacy of the transplantation of the fibroblast cells in eliminating the facial wrinkles using the biometric assessment and to optimize the application of this technique in this treatment. Methods: The present study was conducted on 22 male and female patients aged between 35 and 60 years old. Samples were collected from the retro-auricular region, and the fibroblast cells were isolated and cultured. Subjects received three injections with autologous fibroblasts at 2-week intervals. The patients were followed up for 6 months, and structural changes in their wrinkles were assessed by the sonography and the VisioFace software, cutometer, tewameter, and colorimeter. Results: The results obtained using the VisioFace software showed the significant phenotypic changes in the patients after the nasolabial injections (81.42 ± 23.97 vs. 60.91 ± 21.91, p = 0.0001). The results showed a significant increase in the total skin density (13.73 ± 6.30 vs. 26.27 ± 7.93, p = 0.0001), dermis density (11.28 ± 5.21 vs. 31.88 ± 7.96, p = 0.0001), epidermis density (27.68 ± 23.15 vs. 49.21 ± 45.68, p = 0.046), and dermis thickness (798.09 ± 133.51 μm vs. 905.59 ± 240.67 μm, p = 0.036) compared to pre-treatment. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed that the injection of autologous fibroblasts can be effective in restoring the aging skin, especially in the nasolabial region, and can be used as a safe rejuvenating strategy.

Abstract:Earlier studies have reported right-sided lateralization for different organ cancers except breast cancer. In the present study, lateralization of head-neck cancers and their relation with the peripheral cell–mediated immune asymmetry was investigated. The sample was comprised of 42 men and 20 women diagnosed with cancer in the head-neck region. The diagnosis of cancer was made histopathologically. To measure the cell–mediated (type IV) immunity of both forearms, the tuberculin test (PPD test) was used in the subjects previously sensitized by BCG vaccine during the first year of age. Significant right-sided lateralization in men and the significant left-sided lateralization in women were observed in this study. There was no relation between the lateralization of cancer and the asymmetry of tuberculin reaction or the peripheral cell–mediated immune asymmetry.
Correction of the Tear Trough Deformity and Concomitant Infraorbital Hollows With Extracellular Matrix/Stromal Vascular Fraction Gel

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The tear trough deformity is a sign of eye aging. Filling is an ideal choice for the tear trough accompanied by infraorbital hollows.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of stromal vascular fraction gel (SVF-gel) as a filler for the tear trough deformity which is combined with infraorbital hollows.MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2017 to June 2018, 33 patients underwent autologous fat aspiration and were followed up successfully. Stromal vascular fraction gel was used to correct patients with bilateral Barton I/II; tear trough deformity and infraorbital hollows. Improvement was evaluated by measuring skin-periosteal depth, 3D volume, global aesthetic improvement scale (GAIS), and patient self-assessment.RESULTS: Skin-periosteal depth improved significantly (p < .001). The volumetric increment of the tear trough and infraorbital regions increased 2.132 ± 0.671 mL, and the retention rate was excellent (72.87 ± 10.23%). The GAIS showed a high score (2.5 ± 0.5 points), with patient self-assessment showing satisfactory results for all 7 questions on the questionnaire.CONCLUSION: The high retention rate of SVF-gel suggests that it can provide an effective solution to tear trough deformity accompanied by infraorbital hollows.

Abstract:Background Striae Distensae (SD) is a common dermatological lesion. The mechanism of formation is unclear, the prevailing theory is mechanical pulling of the skin and hormonal changes. Traditional SD treatment methods include topical drugs, photoelectric therapy, stripping and others, but each has limitations. Stromal vascular fraction gel (SVF‐gel) is a filler physically prepared from granular fat, enriched with adipose‐derived stem cells (ADSCs) and extracellular matrix (ECM). A good effect in the treatment of neck lines, wounds, acne, and other aspects. SD formation and treatment goals are comparable to those of neck lines. In this study, SVF‐gel filling will be used to treat mature SD, and its effectiveness and safety will be discussed in detail. Methods From December 2019 to June 2022, recruit patients who want to treat SD caused by obesity or pregnancy among those who have "autologous fat aspiration" to change their body shape. Preoperatively, the area to be treated for SD was marked, autologous fat aspiration was performed, and the aspirated fat was prepared as SVF‐gel and filled into the preoperatively marked SD. All patients had preoperative and postoperative follow‐up with planar photographs and VISIA skin analyzer photographs to assess surgical results and safety from subjective and objective perspectives. Results A total of 36 patients were enrolled, with 31 of them successfully followed up on. The mean Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) score six months after surgery was 1.87 ± 0.03. At six months postoperatively, the overall patient satisfaction rate was 90%. The depth, area, and color of SD improved six months after surgery, and no serious complications occurred in any of the patients. Conclusions SVF‐gel is a safe and effective method of improving mature SD and can be used as a clinical treatment option.

Transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty with micro-autologous fat transplantation harvested from orbital fat pads for lower eyelid aging treatment

Abstract:The aging process of lower eyelids results in lower eyelid wrinkles, tear troughs, and eye bags. Many therapies have been described for treatment of lower eyelid aging, and transcutaneous blepharoplasty is often used for treating cases with eyebags and dermatochalasis. However, it may cause depression near the medial orbit resulting in a hollowed look. In the present study, we developed an innovative method transferring the herniated fatty tissue to volume loss area during the surgical procedure of transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty by means of micro-autologous fat transplantation harvested from resected orbital fat pads. Besides, we also analyze it efficacy and safety compared with traditional methods of transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty. We reviewed the records of the patients who underwent transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty with and without micro-autologous fat transplantation, for lower eyelid aging improvement. We used global aesthetic improvement scale, Hirmand's classification system, and Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale to evaluate the cosmetic outcome at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after operation by two independent investigators. We found patients received transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty with autologous fat graft had significantly higher global aesthetic improvement scale and Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale improvement than those underwent transcutaneous lower eyelid blepharoplasty only in each evaluation timepoints. There was no significant difference of adverse effects between both surgical methods. The present study demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the lower eyelid blepharoplasty with micro-autologous fat transplantation harvesting from resected orbital fat pads.
Skin Rejuvenation and Volume Enhancement with the Micro Superficial Enhanced Fluid Fat Injection (M-SEFFI) for Skin Aging of the Periocular and Perioral Regions

Abstract:Background: Adipose-derived stromal and stem cells (ADSC) in autologous fat promises regenerative advantages, and injected into the dermal and subdermal layers, enhances rejuvenation and volume. However, extremely superficial fat injection with current techniques is limited. Objectives: Efficacy and viability evaluation of fat harvested with extremely small side port (0.3 mm) cannulae without further tissue manipulation for the correction of aging/thin skin in the periocular and perioral regions. Methods: Micro-superficial enhanced fluid fat injection (M-SEFFI) harvests adipose tissue with a multi-perforated cannula (0.3 mm), and autologous platelet rich plasma (PRP) is added. The tissue is injected into the dermal region of the periocular and perioral zones. Efficacy and viability were evaluated by histological and cell culture analysis. Clinical assessment included retrospective evaluation according to 1 = no effect, 2 = fair effect, 3 = good effect, 4 = excellent effect. Results: Between June 2014 and July 2015, 65 patients (7 men; mean age 49.7 years) were treated with M-SEFFI. No intraoperative complications or visible lumpiness were recorded. Analysis demonstrated mature, viable adipocytes with a strong stromal component. Following PRP addition, there was a greater proliferation noted in the M-SEFFI compared to the SEFFI (0.5 mm). Mean follow-up was 4.1 months. Clinical assessment by surgeons and patients at 1 month was 3.52 and 3.74, and 6 months 3.06 and 2.6 respectively. Conclusions: M-SEFFI is effective and viable for lump free skin rejuvenation and volume enhancement, through the extraction of smoother ADSC rich, autologous fat tissue that does not require further tissue manipulation, to correct skin aging. Clinical and Histological Studies of Suborbital Wrinkles Treated with Fractional Bipolar Radiofrequency

Abstract:Fractional bipolar radiofrequency (FRF) has been well established for facial rejuvenation, but there is no report showing its efficacy for the treatment of suborbital wrinkles. The aim of this study was to investigate and objectively evaluate the clinical efficacy and side effects of FRF for the treatment of suborbital wrinkles, including observation of histological changes of the suborbital skin along the therapy. Thirty-two female patients with suborbital wrinkles underwent three sessions of FRF at 3-week intervals with a follow-up period of 6 months after treatment. Two independent dermatologists with standardized photographs evaluated improvement grade. Most patients improved according to photographic assessments and the differences between results at 1 and 6 months were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The median score of pain rated by patients using a visual analog scale (0-10 points) was 4.4 ± 1.2. Most patients rated themselves as satisfied (68.8%) and very satisfied (9.4%). Ten subjects (31.3%) experienced hyperpigmentation in 24 of all together 96 treatments (25.0%). Skin biopsies of three patients were routinely obtained, processed, and stained, and the histological changes had shown that 1-month after the end of the treatment, both the collagen and normal elastic fibers increased in accordance with the clinical efficacy. The study suggested that FRF is a safe and effective method to treat suborbital wrinkles.
Adipose Autologous Micrograft and Its Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in a Bio Cross-Linked Hyaluronic Acid Scaffold for Correction Deep Wrinkles, Facial Depressions, Scars, Face Dermis and Its Regenerations: A Pilot Study and Cases Report

Abstract:The aim of this clinical study was to demonstrate that through a micrograft of viable adipose tissue cells microfiltered at 50 microns to exclude fibrous shoots and cell debris in a suspension of cross-linked hyaluronic acid, we were able to improve visible imperfections of the dermis and to improve clinically observable wrinkles, with a beneficial effect also in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Background and Objectives: With the passage of time, the aging process begins, resulting in a progressive impairment of tissue homeostasis. The main reason for the formation of wrinkles is the involution of the papillary dermis, as well as the loss of stem cell niches with compromise of the extra-cytoplasmic matrix (ECM), and the loss of hyaluronic acid, which helps to maintain the shape and resistance and that is contained in the connective tissue. Materials and Methods: This study involved 14 female patients who underwent dermal wrinkle correction and bio-regeneration over the entire facial area through a suspension containing 1.0 mL of viable micrografts from adipose tissue in a 1.0 mL cross-linked hyaluronic acid. To verify the improvement of the anatomical area concerned over time, the various degrees of correction obtained for wrinkles, and in general for texture, were objectively evaluated by using a Numeric Rating scale (NRS) 10-0, a modified Vancouver scale and a Berardesca scale. Results: The Berardesca, NRS and Modified Vancouver scales showed that with this technique it was possible to obtain excellent results both when the suspension was injected into wrinkles with the linear retrograde technique, and when it was injected with the micropomphs technique to correct furrows, with the intent to revitalize the tissue through progenitors with adult stemness markers. Conclusions: The combination of microfragmented and microfiltered adipose tissue and cross-linked hyaluronic acid at 50 microns is safe new method to treat soft tissue defects such as deep wrinkles.
The Evaluation of Efficacy and Safety of A Radiofrequency Hydro-Injector Device for the Skin around the Eye Area

Abstract:In recent years, variable rejuvenation techniques, such as hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and radiofrequency (RF) devices, have become popular. We evaluated the RF hydro-injector (RFHI) device that simultaneously delivers both a microneedle intradermal RF treatment and a HA filler injection to overcome the disadvantages of HA filler and RF devices alone. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of the RFHI device for the rejuvenation of the periorbital area, including the lateral canthal lines (LCLs) and the infraorbital area. A total of 24 subjects were enrolled in this study and underwent 2 to 3 treatments using the RFHI device. The investigator’s global assessment of the lateral canthal line (IGA-LCL) and the global esthetic improvement scale (GAIS) were used to evaluate the improvement in the LCL. Cutometer® was used to evaluate the skin’s elasticity, and the Antera 3D image capture system® was used to evaluate the degree of wrinkles, roughness, and pore volume. At the 8 week follow-up after the first treatment session, both the IGA-LCL and GAIS showed significant improvement. The improvement in the wrinkles, roughness, and pore volume, measured by the Antera 3D image capture system®, was statistically significant. No serious adverse event was reported. This RFHI device, which delivers both microneedle intradermal RF treatment and HA filler injection, is effective and safe for periorbital rejuvenation.

Rejuvenating the periorbital area using platelet-rich plasma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Intradermal injection of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical cosmetic therapy to rejuvenate the periorbital area pathologies of wrinkles, periorbital hyperpigmentation (POH), and photoaging. The past decade has seen the adoption of this novel therapy around the world. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating PRP treatment of periorbital pathologies. This is a PRISMA compliant review that includes a comprehensive search of the databases Cochrane Library, Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, and clinicaltrials.gov. The search was performed in June 2019 to obtain all peer-reviewed articles published in English that describe the application of PRP to periorbital pathologies. A meta-analysis of patient satisfaction was performed for randomized controlled trials. Nineteen studies treating 455 patients (95% female, age range 28-60) were included. Studies were categorized based on reported outcomes: wrinkles (11 studies), POH (7 studies), and photoaging (6 studies). Patients were treated a mean of 3 times (range 1-8) in mean intervals of 23 days (range 14-56 days). Follow-up averaged 3 months (range 1-6 months). Meta-analysis of 3 randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) shows that patients treated with PRP have increased satisfaction above controls of saline, platelet-poor plasma, mesotherapy, and as an adjunct to laser therapy (overall effect p = 0.001, heterogeneity I2 = 64%). PRP treatment of periorbital area pathologies results in histologic improvements of photoaging, subjective satisfaction score increases, and blind evaluator assessments of rejuvenated skin appearance. Future studies are needed to address limitations of the current literature and should include long-term follow-up, delineation of the POH etiology that is treated, RCTs with low risk of bias, and be absent conflicts of interest or industry sponsors.Trial registration: Prospero Systematic Review Registration ID: CRD42019135968.

Abstract:Two morphologic characteristics have been used to define the nonciliated bronchiolar epithelial cell: abundant agranular endoplasmic reticulum (AER) and membrane-bound avoid granules. To assess the ultrastructural homogeneity of this cell type in the lungs of large domestic mammals used as experimental models in pulmonary research, we evaluated lungs of horse, steer, sheep, dog, and cat. Bronchioles of known anatomic location were examined by electron microscopy following fixation by airway infusion at standard pressure and processing by selective embedding techniques. Nonciliated bronchiolar epithelium of the horse and sheep had numerous avoid granules (averaging above 15 per cell) and abundant AER. Granules were scarce (averaging less than 2 per cell) in steer and dog and absent in cat. AER was minimal in these species compared to horse and sheep. Glycogen was the dominant cytoplasmic feature in steer, dog, and cat, variable in sheep and rare in horse. Large mitochondria with few cristae and densely staining matrix were present only in cat. We concluded that nonciliated bronchiolar cells of horse and sheep were similar in essential features to this cell type in laboratory mammals, having granules and AER in abundance, while those of steer, dog, and cat were not.

Abstract:Background: Infraorbital skin hyperpigmentation, commonly called dark circles, and crow's feet wrinkles are common cosmetic concerns. Various methods of treatment have been evaluated with variable outcomes. Objective: This study was performed to assess the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection for treating periorbital dark circles and crow's feet. Methods: Ten participants with a mean age of 41.2 years were treated in a single session with intradermal injections of 1.5 mL PRP into tear trough area and crow's feet wrinkles on each side. The effects on melanin content, color homogeneity of the treated area, epidermal stratum corneum hydration, and wrinkle volume and visibility index were compared 3 months after treatment with baseline. Physician's global assessment and participants' satisfaction and any potential side effects were also assessed. Results: The improvement in infraorbital color homogeneity was statistically significant (P = 0.010), but no statistically significant changes were observed in melanin content, stratum corneum hydration, wrinkle volume, and visibility index. Participant's satisfaction score and physician's global assessment score were 2.2 and 1.7, respectively, on a 0-3 scale. Conclusion: Platelet-rich plasma may have the potential to improve infraorbital dark circle in terms of color homogeneity of the region, though this remains to be proven using larger, controlled studies using multiple injections.
