Abstract:The electrification of vehicles from the automotive and public transport industries can reduce harmful emissions if implemented correctly, but there is little evidence of whether the electrification of heavy freight transportation vehicles (HFTVs), such as multi-articulated vehicles, used in the freight industry could see the same benefits. This work studied heavy multi-articulated freight vehicles and developed a comparative analysis between electric and conventional diesel power trains to reduce their total emissions. Real-world drive cycle data were obtained from a heavy multi-articulated freight vehicle operating around Melbourne, Australia, with a gross combination mass (GCM) of up to 66,000 kg. Numerical models of the case study freight vehicle were then simulated with diesel, through-the-road parallel (TTRP) hybrid and electric power trains over the five different drive cycles with fuel and energy consumption results quantified. Battery weights were added on top of the real-world operating GCMs to assure the operational payload did not have to be reduced to accommodate the addition of electric power trains. The fuel and energy consumptions were then used to estimate the real-world emissions and compared. The results showed a positive reduction in tailpipe emissions, but total greenhouse emission was worse for operation in Melbourne if batteries were charged off the grid. However, if Melbourne can move towards more renewable energy and change its emission factor for generating electricity down to 0.49 kg CO2-e/kWh, a strong decarbonization could be possible for the Australian road freight industry and could help meet emission reduction targets set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Abstract:The deployment of new energy trucks is a crucial national strategy in China to achieve deep decarbonization in road transport. Although fuel cell trucks and electric tucks are regarded as alternatives to conventional fuel trucks due to the advantage of zero usage emissions, their applicability for each truck type has not been determined. By developing a total cost of ownership analysis, this study dynamically determines the most economical alternative fuel type for each truck type and identifies when the largescale deployment of new energy trucks is economically achievable. Then, by conducting a life cycle analysis with a localized database, this study quantitively evaluates the green gashouse emission intensities and their possible changes of different types of trucks. Finally, the emission reduction potential in the truck fleet by applying fuel cell and alternative fuel during 2020-2050 is comprehensively evaluated. The main results suggest that electric trucks are economically suitable for mini and light-duty trucks by 2031 and 2026, while fuel cell trucks suit medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks by 2027 and 2032. Energy-saving and emission-reduction potential of fuel cell heavy-duty trucks in China during the fuel life cycle

Abstract:Exploring alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technology is a crucial strategy for vehicle emission reduction. Fuel cell heavy-duty trucks (FC-HDTs) have a promising application prospect to alleviate the high energy consumption and emissions of road freight, but their environmental performance during the fuel life cycle should be further studied. This study is aimed at evaluating the fossil fuel consumption and GHG emissions of FC-HDTs in China using the updated GREET model. The results show that (1) comparing various hydrogen production pathways, it is found that the coke oven gas (COG) pathway can provide the best environmental performance, while the energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the coal gasification (CG) and grid power water electrolysis (GPWE) pathways will be significantly decreased in the future. (2) Among the involved vehicles in China, FC-HDT with GVWR18 has the greatest energy-saving and emission-reduction potential. (3) The application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in hydrogen production is conducive to improving the emission-reduction effect of FC-HDT while increasing its energy consumption slightly. The key to achieving upstream carbon neutrality is to optimize the hydrogen production structure and electricity mix, along with adjusting the hydrogen production process and transportation mode. Furthermore, the fuel economy and payload of the FC-HDT affect its environmental performance, indicating the importance of improving the technology of the drivetrain, fuel cell, and hydrogen storage tank.

Abstract:While the electrification of passenger vehicles is in full swing, for the decarbonization of heavy-duty trucks still various challenges exist. Especially the high energy consumption in combination with high daily driving ranges makes battery electric operation much more difficult than for passenger cars. Accordingly, a broad set of different drivetrains is discussed, inter alia hydrogen trucks, catenary hybrid trucks and synthetic fuels. One main advantage of the direct use of electricity in trucks is the high energy efficiency. Still, for heavy duty trucks different concepts for electrification do exist. Here, we compare battery electric trucks with a fast charging option, full electric catenary trucks and battery swap trucks. For a broad perspective, we use seven different comparative dimensions ranging from total cost of ownership to more qualitative but not less important aspects such as necessity of standardization, which would reduce manufacturer’s decision-making freedom. We base our comparison on findings from German pilot projects. While battery electric trucks or battery swap are advantageous since they can be operated in niche operations and thus allow a demand driven rollout of charging infrastructure, catenary infrastructure needs high investments upfront which entails financial risks, but allows for lowest cost if utilized to capacity.

Competitive Analysis of Heavy Trucks with Five Types of Fuels under Different Scenarios—A Case Study of China

Abstract:As the country that emits the most carbon in the world, China needs significant and urgent changes in carbon emission control in the transportation sector in order to achieve the goals of reaching peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Therefore, the promotion of new energy vehicles has become the key factor to achieve these two objectives. For the reason that the comprehensive transportation cost directly affects the end customer's choice of heavy truck models, this work compares the advantages, disadvantages, and economic feasibility of diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), electric, hydrogen, and methanol heavy trucks from a total life cycle cost and end-user perspective under various scenarios. The study results show that when the prices of diesel, LNG, electricity, and methanol fuels are at their highest, and the price of hydrogen is 35 CNY/kg, the total life cycle cost of the five types of heavy trucks from highest to lowest are hydrogen heavy trucks (HHT), methanol heavy trucks (MHT), diesel heavy trucks (DHT), electric heavy trucks (EHT), and LNG heavy trucks (LNGHT), ignoring the adverse effects of cold environments on car batteries. When the prices of diesel, LNG, electricity, and methanol fuels are at average or lowest levels, and the price of hydrogen is 30 CNY/kg or 25 CNY/kg, the life cycle cost of the five heavy trucks from highest to lowest are HHT, DHT, MHT, EHT, and LNGHT. When considering the impact of cold environments, even with lower electricity prices, EHT struggle to be economical when LNG prices are low. If the electricity price is above 1 CNY/kWh, regardless of the impact of cold environments, the economic viability of EHT is lower than that of HHT with a purchase cost of 500,000 CNY and a hydrogen price of 25 CNY/kg. Simultaneously, an exhaustive competitiveness analysis of heavy trucks powered by diverse energy sources highlights the specific categories of heavy trucks that ought to be prioritized for development during various periods and the challenges they confront. Finally, based on the analysis results and future development trends, the corresponding policy recommendations are proposed to facilitate high decarbonization in the transportation sector.

Reducing CO2 Emissions of Hybrid Heavy-Duty Trucks and Buses: Paving the Transition to Low-Carbon Transport

Abstract:This study investigates the CO2 reduction potential of powertrain hybridisation on heavy-duty lorries and city buses. The analysis considers modern parallel and serial hybrid architectures, assessing their efficiency and limits in CO2 emission reduction through vehicle simulation in VECTO, which is the official tool of the European Commission for calculating heavy-duty vehicle fuel and energy consumption. The results reveal distinct trends for each vehicle type and architecture. In lorries, more significant improvements are observed in urban delivery profiles, reaching up to ~16%, indicating the benefits of hybridisation in transient conditions with energy recuperation opportunities. City buses, particularly those with serial architectures, exhibit significant emission reductions that reach 36%, making them suitable for urban environments. The optimisation of electric motor size and performance plays a crucial role in achieving emission reductions, while battery capacity must be carefully considered to avoid adverse effects. For lorries in urban delivery use, further improvements of 17.5% can be achieved by utilising a 160 kW engine motor and 30 kWh battery. Buses are already quite well optimised, with serial architecture presenting the highest benefits with a 120 kW electric motor and a battery of 11 kWh. Future research should focus on supercapacitors and gearboxes to improve efficiency at higher vehicle speeds and assess hybridisation potential in interurban coach travel. The heavy-duty vehicle sector can make significant strides towards low-carbon transport by maximising hybrid powertrain efficiency and emission reductions.

Abstract:A unified and complete China life cycle model is established considering differences in various test conditions to provide a data check and harmonizing method for fuel economy for medium-and heavy-duty truck(MHDT), taking into account the differences in MHDTs weight classes, usage scenarios and power systems. Different penetration scenarios for alternative fuels are established to predict changes in MHDT fleets. The results show that hydrogen sources substantially impact the emission reduction potential of MHDTs. Renewable electrolysis and by-product hydrogen can reduce GHG emissions by 29.0–52.4%. Other hydrogen pathways, which rely on hydrogen transportation and storage technologies, will present the opportunity for emission reduction only after the grid becomes low-carbon. In terms of vehicle models, the battery mass of battery-electric MHDT accounts for over 15% of their curb weight, weakening their emission reduction benefit. By contrast, fuel cell Class 8 trucks may maximize emission reductions because of its lower mass of equipment. Under different scenarios, the MHDT fleet is expected to cut emissions by 12.1–69.9% by 2050. However, overly aggressive adoption of hydrogen could lead to an increase in emissions from 2020 to 2040. Thus, comprehensive consideration of the large-scale promotion of FC-MHDTs combined with China's energy transition and technological development is suggested.

The impact of diesel vehicles on NOx and PM10 emissions from road transport in urban morphological zones: A case study in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Abstract:Harmful emissions like nitrogen oxide and particulate matter are one of the big challenges facing modern society. These emissions are especially apparent in agglomerations. Possible solutions to overcome this challenge within the framework of the transformation of the transport sector are the change of the transport vehicles of freight and passenger transport or changing the fuel of the vehicles. Determining the viability of both approaches requires analyses to determine which vehicles are the main polluters in urban areas. This study outlines a bottom-up approach for the calculation of road transport emissions on street level in the representative model region of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, considering eight different vehicle classes as well as diesel and gasoline as fuel. Part of the approach is the development of a street-section traffic volume map considering all streets in the model region using a developed multivariate linear regression model for Germany and existing traffic counts. Using the approach developed here, the urban areas of Herne, Oberhausen and Bochum were identified as hotspots with the highest specific nitrogen oxide emissions, while the urban areas of Herne, Oberhausen and Gelsenkirchen were identified as hotspots with the highest specific particulate matter emissions. A detailed investigation of Oberhausen as a representative emission hotspot showed that 91% of road transport nitrogen oxide emissions are produced by vehicles that use diesel fuel and 9% from vehicles with gasoline fuel, while gasoline vehicles account for 43% of the total distance driven and diesel vehicles for 57%. With respect to particulate matter emissions in the urban area of Oberhausen, 29% are produced by gasoline vehicles and 71% by diesel vehicles. However, only 22% of particulate matter emissions are exhaust emissions, while 78% are produced due to the abrasion of tires, brakes and the road.
Environment-economic Comparison of Potential Alternative Fuel Heavy-Duty Trucks in China

Abstract:Heavy-duty trucks, as important players in pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, need to undertake critical responsibility in road freight. By estimating the well-to-wheel emissions and total cost of ownership for internal combustion engine heavy-duty trucks, this study proposes the model of carbon-abatement benefit to conducting an environment-economic comparison of traditional diesel and potential alternative fuel. The results show that liquefied natural gas has better economic performance, with a cost 14.9% lower than diesel, and biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% compared to diesel. Compared to other alternative fuels, liquefied natural gas has better carbon reduction benefits, with a carbon abatement value of 0.51 CNY/km. By 2040, all alternative fuels have positive carbon abatement values, ranging from 0.26 to 1.28 CNY/km. The progress of replacing diesel by alternative fuels for heavy duty trucks depending on the incentive policies, the clean production of fuels, and the competition from electric trucks.

Abstract:Road transportation is a significant source of CO 2 emissions and energy demand. Consequently, initiatives are being promoted to decrease the sector's emissions and comply with the Paris agreement. This article synthesizes the available information about heavy-duty fuel cell trucks as their deployment needs to be considered a complementary solution to decreasing CO 2 emissions alongside battery electric vehicles. A thorough evaluation of 95 relevant documents determines that the main research topics in the past ten years converge on public policies, hydrogen supply chain, environmental impact, drivetrain technology, fuel cell, and storage tank applications. The identified research gaps relate to expanding collaboration between institutions and governments in developing joint green macro policies focused on hydrogen heavy-duty trucks, scarce research about hydrogen production energy sources, low interest in documenting hydrogen pilot projects, and minimal involvement of logistic companies, which need to plan their diesel freight's conversion as soon as possible.

Comparative Study of Freight Traffic Electrification Technologies: Electrified Highway and Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Abstract:Freight transport with heavy trucks has emerged as a significant energy-intensive sector and a major contributor to carbon emissions in China's transportation industry. The diesel consumption in this field represents approximately 40 % of China's total annual diesel consumption, while the CO2 emissions account for approximately 50 % of the total annual CO2 emissions in the transportation industry. Under the background of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and energy revolution, it has become an inevitable trend to build a green, secure and efficient road freight mode and promote the low-carbon and clean transformation of heavy freight transport. So far, the electrification options of freight transport with heavy trucks mainly include charging, battery swapping, hydrogen heavy trucks, and electrified highways. This paper mainly introduces the hydrogen heavy truck and electrified highway options. Based on a dedicated coal transport route, the economic efficiency and application scenarios were compared and analyzed between these two options from a perspective of cost estimates. The analysis results show that, for this dedicated coal transport route, when the annual traffic volume is greater than 2.0483 million tons, the electrified highway option is more economical, while on the contrary, the cost of the hydrogen heavy truck option is lower.

Abstract:We must move toward electrification of the transportation sector to help mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change. Carbon emission reduction in long-haul freight transport should be developed and administered given it accounts for 22% of transportation related emissions worldwide. Although electrified transport can make tail-pipe vehicle carbon emissions negligible, it does not mean that the entire system that supports electrified transport is carbon-neutral. We address this latter point in the present study by conducting a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment of long-haul electric trucks that are powered by overhead cable lines (OCL). The environmental impacts were compared with those of battery electric vehicle trucks (BEV), and conventional diesel-powered trucks. The techno-economic analysis of long-haul freight OCL technology was conducted based on data from pilot-scale studies in Germany. The feasibility of implementing this technology in other countries was examined by comparing environmental impacts across respective electricity mixes. Results show that the environmental and economic impacts of OCL technology depends on the adoption percent. After analyzing different adoption rate scenarios, OCL adoption was found to be economically and environmentally beneficial at the 10% adoption rate or higher. We also found that use phase electricity accounts for over 83% of the net greenhouse gas emissions, thereby making the electricity mix powering this technology a determining factor for implementation around the world. Across their life cycles, the carbon footprint of both OCL and BEV was 2.5 times lesser than that of the conventional truck. Other findings reveal adaptable methods, a unique environmental-to-economic ratio measure, and equity considerations that can be leveraged for immediate decision-making activities and future studies alike.
Vehicle-cycle and life-cycle analysis of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks in the United States

Abstract:Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles account for a substantial portion (25 %) of transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Efforts to reduce these emissions focus primarily on diesel hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, and battery electric vehicles. However, these efforts ignore the high energy intensity of producing lithium (Li)-ion batteries and the carbon fiber used in fuel-cell vehicles. Here, we conduct a life-cycle analysis to compare the impacts of the vehicle manufacturing cycle for Class 6 (pickup-and-delivery, PnD) and Class 8 (day- and sleeper-cab) trucks with diesel, electric, fuel-cell, and hybrid powertrains. We assume that all trucks were manufactured in the US in 2020 and operated over 2021-2035, and we developed a comprehensive materials inventory for all trucks. Our analysis reveals that common systems (trailer/van/box, truck body, chassis, and lift-gates) dominate the vehicle-cycle GHG emissions (64-83 % share) of diesel, hybrid, and fuel-cell powertrains. Conversely, propulsion systems (lithium-ion batteries and fuel-cell systems) contribute substantially to these emissions for electric (43-77 %) and fuel-cell powertrains (16-27 %). These vehicle-cycle contributions arise from the extensive use of steel and aluminum, the high energy/GHG intensity of producing lithium-ion batteries and carbon fiber, and the assumed battery replacement schedule for Class 8 electric trucks. A switch from the conventional diesel powertrain to alternative electric and fuel-cell powertrains causes an increase in vehicle-cycle GHG emissions (by 60-287 % and 13-29 %, respectively) but leads to substantial GHG reductions when considering the combined vehicle- and fuel-cycles (Class 6: 33-61 %, Class 8: 2-32 %), highlighting the benefits of this shift in powertrains and energy supply chain. Finally, payload variation significantly influences the relative life-cycle performance of different powertrains, while LIB cathode chemistry has a negligible effect on BET life-cycle GHGs.

Abstract:China's road freight transport volume has dramatically increased over recent years, leading to substantial energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles provide a novel approach for the hard-to-abate industrial sector. This research developed a model of China's road freight industry based on an agent-based complex system. The model was utilized to evaluate the diffusion of hydrogen fuel cell truck (HFCT) fleets and their environmental impacts by inspecting five diverse pathways. Wherein Pathway 1 represents the conventional business- as -usual approach, Pathway 2 signifies the potential for technological advancements, Pathway 3 illustrates the application of CCS technology, Pathway 4 showcases the potential for increased production of green hydrogen, while Pathway 5 encompasses a combination of these scenarios. Based on the simulation results, the following conclusions can be drawn: Truck purchasers are more sensitive to the price of hydrogen than HFCTs, especially heavy-duty truck purchasers. Without policy intervention, HFCTs will have difficulty attracting consumers in the near future. Fossil-based hydrogen production with CCS combined with strengthened fiscal subsidies is the only way to achieve the goal of one million HFCTs by 2035. From the tank-to-wheel perspective, all pathways will reach peak carbon emissions after 2030, which can be completed in 2033 at the earliest. From the standpoint of well-to-wheel, both Pathway 4, which increases the proportion of green hydrogen, and Pathway 3, which introduces carbon capture and storage (CCS) in fossil-based hydrogen production, can achieve significant carbon emission reduction.

Abstract:Decarbonizing heavy-duty vehicles is becoming increasingly important, yet multiple renewable-based decarbonization pathways have not been compared systematically. To fill this gap, this study develops a techno-economic and environmental model that integrates the fuel cycle and vehicle cycle to assess these pathways for China. The model includes two energy storage technologies: batteries and hydrogen, three energy transmission options, and two vehicle types: fuel cell electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles. Five distinct low-carbon pathways are evaluated on a ton-kilometer basis, including cost, greenhouse gas emissions, and abatement cost relative to conventional diesel trucks. Results indicate that the most cost-effective battery electric vehicle pathway offers a 7 % lower ton-km cost than diesel trucks for a 49-ton gross vehicle weight. Battery electric vehicle charging combined with hydrogen for power generation is more cost-effective than direct use of hydrogen in fuel cell electric vehicles. All studied pathways can achieve over 80 % emission reduction compared to diesel trucks, with fuel cell electric vehicle pathways having the highest abatement costs of 103–117 USD/tonCO 2 . Analysis of the impact of gross vehicle weight and vehicle range indicates that battery electric vehicle pathways outperform fuel cell electric vehicle pathways across most dimensions. Costs of battery electric vehicle pathways do increase sharply for vehicle ranges beyond about 700 km, and fuel cell electric vehicles become more cost-effective relative to battery electric vehicles for ranges above approximately 1100 km, although all pathways are much more costly than diesel trucks at long ranges. The sensitivity analysis highlights the importance of powertrain efficiency and cost projections show that fuel cell electric heavy-duty vehicles can achieve cost-parity before 2030. These results highlight the desirability of promoting the adoption of heavier battery electric vehicles and providing more targeted subsidies for long-range fuel cell electric vehicles.

Analysis of the Actual Usage and Emission Reduction Potential of Electric Heavy-Duty Trucks: A Case Study of a Steel Plant

Abstract:In order to understand the driving characteristics of electric heavy-duty trucks in practical application scenarios and promote their usage to replace diesel trucks, this study analyzed the actual usage of electric and diesel heavy-duty trucks in a steel factory based on vehicle-monitoring data and remote online monitoring data and estimated the emission reduction potential of the application of electric trucks by using a mileage-based method and the greenhouse gas emission model. The results showed that the electric heavy-duty trucks in the steel factory mostly operated for over 14 h, with a vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) of 50–300 km each day, which could meet most of the demands of the transportation of the steel industry. The average daily energy consumption for most trucks falls within the range of 210–230 kWh/100 km, with higher consumption in winter than in summer, which can save approximately 18–26% in operating costs compared with diesel trucks. It is estimated that the usage of these electric heavy-duty trucks can achieve an annual reduction of 115.8 tons of NOx emissions, 0.7 tons of PM emissions, and 18,000 tons of CO2 emissions. To further promote the application of electric heavy-duty trucks in China, several policy suggestions, such as introducing priority road-right policies, promoting vehicle and battery leasing markets, and exempting zero-emission vehicles during heavy pollution days, were proposed.

Decarbonising road freight transport: The role of zero-emission trucks and intangible costs

Abstract:The road freight sector faces significant challenges in decarbonisation, driven by high energy demand and limited availability of low-emission fuels and commercialised zero-emission vehicles. This study investigates intangible costs associated with advanced electric and hydrogen-powered trucks, including recharging/refuelling time, cargo capacity limitations, and buyer reluctance towards emerging technologies. Utilising a comprehensive whole-systems modelling approach considering low- and zero-emission fuels, inter-sectoral dynamics, and the carbon budget, we explore cost-optimal decarbonisation pathways for heavy, medium, and light trucks. Scenario and sensitivity analyses reveal the following insights: (1) Electric trucks dominate the market under mitigation pathways across all weight categories. However, the inclusion of intangible costs triggers a shift, leading to the emergence of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for heavy trucks, while battery electric vehicles are preferred for medium and small trucks. (2) Prioritising heavy truck decarbonisation and taking early action are crucial to avoid carbon lock-in effects. (3) Considering limited decarbonisation options, where electric and hydrogen-fuelled trucks are pivotal, this research highlights the significance of policy instruments targeting operational expenditures over conventional purchase price incentives. Such policies offer dual benefits by supporting truck owners and directing incentives more precisely towards achieving measurable emission reductions.

Abstract:Abstract The option of decarbonizing urban freight transport using battery electric vehicle (BEV) seems promising. However, there is currently a strong debate whether fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) might be the better solution. The question arises as to how a fleet of FCEV influences the operating cost, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and primary energy demand in comparison to BEVs and to Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV). To investigate this, we simulate the urban food retailing as a representative share of urban freight transport using a multi-agent transport simulation software. Synthetic routes as well as fleet size and composition are determined by solving a vehicle routing problem. We compute the operating costs using a total cost of ownership analysis and the use phase emissions as well as primary energy demand using the well to wheel approach. While a change to BEV results in 17–23% higher costs compared to ICEV, using FCEVs leads to 22–57% higher costs. Assuming today’s electricity mix, we show a GHG emission reduction of 25% compared to the ICEV base case when using BEV. Current hydrogen production leads to a GHG reduction of 33% when using FCEV which however cannot be scaled to larger fleets. Using current electricity in electrolysis will increase GHG emission by 60% compared to the base case. Assuming 100% renewable electricity for charging and hydrogen production, the reduction from FCEVs rises to 73% and from BEV to 92%. The primary energy requirement for BEV is in all cases lower and for higher compared to the base case. We conclude that while FCEV have a slightly higher GHG savings potential with current hydrogen, BEV are the favored technology for urban freight transport from an economic and ecological point of view, considering the increasing shares of renewable energies in the grid mix.

Impact assessment of crude oil mix, electricity generation mix, and vehicle technology on road freight emission reduction in China

Abstract:To achieve net zero emissions, the global transportation sector needs to reduce emissions by 90% from 2020 to 2050, and road freight has a significant potential to reduce emissions. In this context, emission reduction paths should be explored for road freight over the fuel life cycle. Based on panel data from 2015 to 2020 in China, China's version of the GREET model was established to evaluate the impact of crude oil mix, electricity mix, and vehicle technology on China's reduction in road freight emissions. The results show that the import share of China's crude oil has increased from 2015 to 2020, resulting in an increase in the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity of ICETs in the well-to-tank (WTT) stage by 7.3% in 2020 compared with 2015. Second, the share of China's coal-fired electricity in the electricity mix decreased from 2015 to 2020, reducing the GHG emission intensity of battery electric trucks (BETs), by approximately 6.5% in 2020 compared to 2015. Third, different vehicle classes and types of BETs and fuel cell electric trucks (FCETs) have different emission reduction effects, and their potentials for energy-saving and emission reduction at various stages of the fuel life cycle are different. In addition, in a comparative study of vehicle technology, the results show that (1) for medium-duty trucks (MDTs) and heavy-duty trucks (HDTs), FCETs have lower GHG emission intensity than BETs, and replacing diesel-ICETs can significantly reduce GHG emissions from road freight; (2) for light-duty trucks (LDTs), BETs and FCETs have the highest GHG emission reduction potential; thus, improving technologies such as electricity generation, hydrogen fuel production, hydrogen fuel storage, and transportation will help to improve the emission reduction capabilities of BETs and FCETs. Therefore, policymakers should develop emission standards for road freight based on vehicle class, type, and technology.

Abstract:Freight transport accounts for 8–15% of total traffic flow in urban areas within the European Union. The majority of these deliveries are undertaken by diesel-powered vehicles with extremely disproportionate levels of CO2, NOx and particulate matter emissions. Accordingly, a variety of strategic options have been advanced as key solutions for addressing fossil fuel demand and emissions in urban freight transport. This paper progresses the discourse on hydrogen vehicles as viable strategic options for addressing sustainability concerns in urban logistics by undertaking a comprehensive total cost of ownership analysis. Outcomes from this study not only support the economic competitiveness of hydrogen vehicles, but also analyse implications of several future policy and market scenarios.
