Abstract:In this work, we have studied the structural, elastic, mechanical, electronic, bonding, acoustic, thermal and optical properties of TaX (X = P, As) in detail via first-principles method using the density functional theory. A comprehensive study of elastic constants and moduli shows that both TaP and TaAs possesses low to medium level of elastic anisotropy (depending on the measure), reasonably good machinability, mixed bonding characteristics with ionic and covalent contributions, brittle nature and relatively high Vickers hardness with a low Debye temperature and melting temperature. The minimum thermal conductivities and anisotropies of TaX (X = P, As) are calculated. Bond population analysis supports the bonding nature as predicted by the elastic parameters. The bulk electronic band structure calculations reveal clear semi-metallic features with signature Dirac cone-like dispersions near the Fermi level. A pseudogap in the electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level separating the bonding and the antibonding states indicates significant electronic stability of tetragonal TaX (X = P, As). The reflectivity spectra show almost non-selective behavior over a wide range of photon energy encompassing visible to mid-ultraviolet regions. High reflectivity over wide spectral range makes TaX suitable as reflecting coating. TaX (X = P, As) are very efficient absorber of ultraviolet radiation. Both the compounds are moderately optically anisotropic owing to the anisotropic nature of the electronic band structure. The refractive indices are very high in the infrared to visible range. All the energy dependent optical parameters show metallic features and are in complete accord with the underlying bulk electronic density of states calculations.
Anisotropic thermoelectric properties of Weyl semimetal NbX (X = P and As): a potential thermoelectric material.

Abstract:Weyl semimetal, a newly developed thermoelectric material, has aroused much interest due to its extraordinary transport properties. In this work, the thermoelectric transport properties of NbX (X = P and As), a prototypical Weyl semimetal, are investigated using the first-principles calculations together with Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated room-temperature lattice thermal conductivities along the a and c directions are 2.0 W mK(-1) and 0.6 W mK(-1) for NbP and 1.4 W mK(-1) and 0.4 W mK(-1) for NbAs, respectively. The low thermal conductivities may be useful in the thermoelectric applications. It is found that the acoustic branches have obvious contribution to the total lattice thermal conductivity, and the size dependence of the thermal conductivities can provide guidance for designing thermoelectric nanostructures. Our results show that the anisotropic structures of these compounds bring about the anisotropy of transport coefficients along the a and c directions, and the preferred direction is the c direction in thermoelectric applications. Moreover, NbP and NbAs show high ZT values of 0.82 and 0.50 along the c direction for p-type at an optimal carrier concentration, indicating that they are potential thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:PdAs2 monolayer, a new pentagonal two-dimensional (2D) material, greatly attracts widely research interest due to its extremely high carrier mobility with a direct band gap. We have systematically studied the electronic structure, elastic, optical and thermal transport properties of monolayer PdAs2 from first-principles calculations. Our electronic structure calculations show that the monolayer PdAs2 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 0.78 eV. Tensile strain has a good regulating effect on the band gap, which can be adjusted from 0.01 eV to 0.84 eV. The calculated elastic constants of monolayer PdAs2 confirm that the PdAs2 monolayer is mechanically stable. The calculated optical properties reveal that the energy range of the absorption spectrum is 1 eV-15 eV. The absorption range of PdAs2 monolayer is mainly visible and ultraviolet light. Under the tensile strain, the absorption spectrum shows obvious redshift. With the increase of strain, the reflectivity and refractivity increase. The calculated thermal conductivity of the monolayer PdAs2 at 300 K is 1.04 W/(mK), which is lower than that of known pentagonal monolayer. In addition, the effects of phonon free path, group velocity and phonon scattering rate on lattice thermal conductivity are analyzed.
DFT based investigation of bulk mechanical, thermophysical and optoelectronic properties of PbTaSe2 topological semimetal

Abstract:PbTaSe2 is a non-centrosymmetric topological semimetal. In this work we have explored the structural, elastic, mechanical, bonding, electronic, acoustic, thermal, and optical properties of PbTaSe2. The electronic bond structure calculations confirm semi-metallic character. Fermi surface topology shows both electron and hole sheets. The single crystal elastic constants reveal that PbTaSe2 is elastically stable. The compound is soft, brittle, and highly machinable at the same time. It also possesses very high level of dry lubricity. Various anisotropy indicators suggest that PbTaSe2 is elastically anisotropic with layered character. The phonon dynamics has been investigated. Phonon dispersion plot shows that the compound is dynamically stable with a clear frequency gap between the acoustic and optical branches. The Debye temperature, phonon thermal conductivity, and melting temperature of PbTaSe2 is low. The compound has medium Grüneisen parameter. The bonding character is mainly dominated by ionic bonding with some metallic contribution. The optical parameters have been studied in detail. The optical spectra reveal metallic features. The compound reflects visible light very efficiently (reflectance above 60%). It is also an efficient absorber of the ultraviolet light. The compound exhibits significant optical anisotropy with respect to the polarization directions of the incident electric field.

Anisotropic Lattice Thermal Conductivity In Topological Semimetal Zrgex (X = S, Se, Te): A First-Principles Study

Abstract:Topological semimetals have attracted significant attentions owing to their potential applications in numerous fields such as low-power electron devices and quantum computation, which are closely related to their thermal transport properties. In this work, the phonon transport properties of topological Dirac nodal-line semimetals ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te) with the PbClF-type structures are systematically studied using the first-principles calculations combined with the Boltzmann transport theory. The obtained lattice thermal conductivities show an obvious anisotropy, which is caused by the layer structures of ZrGeX (X = S, Se, Te). The room-temperature lattice conductivity of ZrGeTe along c direction is found to be as low as 0.24 W m(-1) K-1, indicating that it could be of great significance in the fields of thermal coating materials and solar cell absorber. In addition, we extract each phonon branch from group velocities, phonon scattering rates, Gruneisen parameters, and phase space volumes to investigate the mechanism underlying the low thermal conductivity. It is concluded that the difference of thermal conductivities of three materials may be caused by the number of scattering channels and the effect of anharmonic. Furthermore, the phonon mean free path along a direction is relatively longer. Nanostructures or polycrystalline structures may be effective to reduce the thermal conductivity and improve the thermoelectric properties.

Abstract:The family of transition metal dipnictides (TMDs) has been of theoretical and experimental interest because this family hosts topological states and extremely large magnetoresistance (MR). Recently, TaAs2, a member of this family, has been predicted to support a topological crystalline insulating state. Here, by using high resolution. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we reveal both closed and open pockets in the metallic Fermi surface and linearly dispersive bands on the (201) surface, along with the presence of extreme MR observed from magneto-transport measurements. A comparison of the ARPES results with first-principles computations show that the linearly dispersive bands on the measured surface of TaAs2 are trivial bulk bands. The absence of symmetry-protected surface state on the (201) surface indicates its topologically dark nature. The presence of open Fermi surface features suggests that the open orbit fermiology could contribute to the extremely large MR of TaAs.

Ab initio approach to the elastic, electronic, and optical properties of MoTe2: A topological Weyl semimetal

Abstract:The topological Weyl semimetal MoTe2, in the orthorhombic phase, is an important system both from the point of view of fundamental physics and potential applications. In this study we have investigated the elastic, electronic, bonding and optical properties of MoTe2 using density functional theory. Study of the elastic constants and moduli indicates that MoTe2 is a relatively soft material with high level of machinability. Mechanical stability conditions are fulfilled. The compound possesses elastic and mechanical anisotropy and is prone to brittle fracture. Elastic parameters indicate that both covalent and metallic bondings are present in MoTe2. This is supported by the charge density distribution mapping and Mulliken and Hirshfeld bond population analyses. Debye temperature has been calculated. A relatively low value of Debye temperature also supports the scenario where bonding strengths are weak. The bulk electronic band structure calculations reveal clear indications of semi-metallic character. A pseudogap in the electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level indicates high level of electronic stability. Features reminiscent of the Dirac cone is observed close to the Fermi level. There is significant electronic anisotropy. Bands running in the crystallographic c-direction are non-dispersive with high carrier effective mass. Investigation of optical constants demonstrate that MoTe2 possess excellent reflecting characteristics over a wide spectral range encompassing the infrared to ultraviolet regions. The compound also has high refractive index in the visible range. MoTe2 is optically anisotropic, reflecting the anisotropic nature of the electronic band structure. The energy dependent optical parameters show metallic features and are in complete accord with the electronic density of states calculations.

Abstract:Using ab initio method we have studied the structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of AlB2 and TaB2. We have used plane wave pseudopotential with generalised gradient approximation as implemented in CASTEP program. The independent elastic constants, bulk modulus, Young's modulus, shear modulus, anisotropic factor, Pugh ratio, etc are calculated. This results show that AlB2 and TaB2 are mechanically stable. We have also calculated the band structure and density of states. Band structure results show that AlB2 and TaB2 show metallic behaviour. In order to understand the electronic properties in a better way we have also calculated dielectric function, refractive index, absorption coefficient, conductivity, loss function and reflectivity. Results of absorption coefficient and conductivity are in good agreement with the band structure results. The effect of temperature and pressure on the bulk modulus, Debye temperature, specific heat and also on the thermal expansion coefficient are derived from the quasi-harmonic Debye model with phononic effect in both cases.The results for the elastic and electronic properties are compared to experimental measurements and with the results obtained in different band-structure calculations, however, no optical data are available for comparison.

Abstract:SnTaS2 is a recently discovered layered semimetal exhibiting type-II low transition temperature superconductivity. Except some superconductivity related parameters, most of the physical properties, namely, elastic, mechanical, bonding, phonon dispersion, acoustic, thermophysical, and optical properties of SnTaS2 are unexplored till now. In this study, we have investigated these hitherto unexplored properties of SnTaS2 for the first time employing density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles method. SnTaS2 is a mechanically stable, elastically anisotropic compound with strongly layered feature. The bond hardness and Vickers hardness have been calculated. The material under study is ductile, soft and highly machinable. The chemical bonding feature has mixed character with significant contribution coming from the ionic channel. Phonon dispersion curves disclose dynamical stability. Electronic band structure calculations show simple metallic character. The Fermi surface consists of both electron-like and hole-like sheets with varying degrees of dispersion. The low energy (including visible part of the spectrum) refractive index of SnTaS2 is high. The reflectivity is fairly nonselective over a wide range of photon energy and the absorption coefficient is large in the mid ultraviolet region. The Debye temperature and thermal conductivity of SnTaS2 are low. The electron-phonon coupling constant has been calculated. The compound under study possesses optical anisotropy with respect to the polarization direction of the incident electric field.

Abstract:We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbP, and NbAs, utilizing diffraction techniques (single crystal x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy) and imaging techniques (transmission electron microscopy/scanning transmission electron microscopy). We observe defects of various degrees, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of all four semimetals. While TaP displays a large pnictide deficiency with composition TaP$_{0.83(3)}$, and stacking faults accompanied by anti-site disorder and site vacancies, TaAs displays transition metal deficiency with composition Ta$_{0.92(2)}$As and a high density of stacking faults. NbP also displays pnictide deficiency, yielding composition NbP$_{0.95(2)}$, and lastly, NbAs display very little deviation from a 1:1 composition, NbAs$_{1.00(3)}$, and is therefore recommended to serve as the model compound for these semimetals.

Abstract:In this study, the density functional theory (DFT) was employed to study the structural, electronic, optical, and thermoelectric characteristics of half-Heusler (HH) FeTaX (X = P or As). Optimization of the structures was achieved using Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) parametrized generalized gradient approximation (GGA). These HH FeTaX (X = P, As) showed indirect bandgaps of 0.882 eV and 0.748 eV, respectively. The predicted density of states (DOS) spectra suggest that Fe-d and Ta-d states contribute predominantly to both valence and conduction bands, whereas P/As-p states contribute less. Optical properties were investigated to assess their potential in optoelectronic applications. The estimated values of various optical parameters and low loss suggest that the studied HH FeTaX (X = P, As) are suitable for optoelectronic device applications. The thermoelectric responses of the studied HH FeTaX (X = P, As) were computed, and their highest power factors at high temperature reflects their usage in thermoelectric devices.

Anisotropic Superconductivity in the Topological Crystalline Metal Pb1/3TaS2 with Multiple Dirac Fermions

Abstract:Topological crystalline metals and semimetals (TCMs) have stimulated great research interest, which broadens the classification of topological phases and provides a valuable platform to explore topological superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of superconductivity and topological features in Pb-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Pb1/3TaS2. Systematic measurements indicate that Pb1/3TaS2 is a quasi-two-dimensional (q-2D) type-II superconductor (T-c approximate to 2.8 K) with a significantly enhanced anisotropy of upper critical field (gamma H-c2 = H-c2(ab) / H-c2(c) approximate to 17). In addition, first-principles calculations reveal that Pb1/3TaS2 hosts multiple topological Dirac fermions in the electronic band structure. We discover four groups of Dirac nodal lines on the k(z) = pi plane and two sets of Dirac points on the rotation or screw axes, which are protected by crystalline symmetries and robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Dirac-cone-like surface states emerge on the (001) surface because of band inversion. Our work shows that the TCM candidate Pb1/3TaS2 is a promising arena to study the interplay between superconductivity and topological Dirac fermions.

Abstract:The search for high-performance intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators is crucial for the development of topological electronics. Here, based on density–functional theory calculations, TaPdSTe and TaPdSeTe monolayers are demonstrated to be intrinsic QAH insulators with topological band gaps of 88 and 79 meV, respectively. Both TaPdSTe and TaPdSeTe monolayers show an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy with the Curie temperatures of 260 and 262 K by Monte Carlo simulations, respectively. The calculated Chern number C for both materials is −1. The analysis of the electronic structures reveals that the ferromagnetic topological property is caused by the energy band inversions of d xz and d yz orbitals of Ta atoms. Additionally, the effects of biaxial strain on the magnetic and topological properties are discussed for the current TaPdSTe and TaPdSeTe monolayers. During −3 to 3% biaxial strains, TaPdSTe and TaPdSeTe monolayers maintain the QAH effect, but their topological band gaps increase gradually from compressive to tensile strains. This study presents two intrinsic topological insulators that can help develop low-power electronic devices.

Abstract:Weyl fermions are massless chiral fermions that play an important role in quantum field theory but have never been observed as fundamental particles. A Weyl semimetal is an unusual crystal that hosts Weyl fermions as quasiparticle excitations and features Fermi arcs on its surface. Such a semimetal not only provides a condensed matter realization of the anomalies in quantum field theories but also demonstrates the topological classification beyond the gapped topological insulators. Here, we identify a topological Weyl semimetal state in the transition metal monopnictide materials class. Our first-principles calculations on TaAs reveal its bulk Weyl fermion cones and surface Fermi arcs. Our results show that in the TaAs-type materials the Weyl semimetal state does not depend on fine-tuning of chemical composition or magnetic order, which opens the door for the experimental realization of Weyl semimetals and Fermi arc surface states in real materials.

Abstract: TaAs as one of the experimentally discovered topological Weyl semimetal has attracted intense interests recently. The ambient TaAs has two types of Weyl nodes which are not on the same energy level. As an effective way to tune lattice parameters and electronic interactions, high pressure is becoming a significant tool to explore new materials as well as their exotic states. Therefore, it is highly interesting to investigate the behaviors of topological Weyl fermions and possible structural phase transitions in TaAs under pressure. Here, with a combination of ab initio calculations and crystal structure prediction techniques, a new hexagonal P-6m2 phase is predicted in TaAs at pressure around 14 GPa. Surprisingly, this new phase is a topological semimetal with only single set of Weyl nodes exactly on the same energy level. The phase transition pressure from the experimental measurements, including electrical transport measurements and Raman spectroscopy, agrees with our theoretical prediction reasonably. Moreover, the P-6m2 phase seems to be quenched recoverable to ambient pressure, which increases the possibilities of further study on the exotic behaviors of single set of Weyl fermions, such as the interplay between surface states and other properties.
Experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal phase with Fermi arc surface states in TaAs

Abstract:A Weyl semimetal is a gapless topological state of matter described by a unique bulk-boundary correspondence in the electronic band structure. The low-energy bulk electrons are linearlydispersing Weyl fermions, while the Weyl nodes are connected on the boundary by Fermi arc surface states. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the inversion-breaking single crystalline compound TaAs hosts an electronic structure with Fermi arc surface states. We directly observe that these Fermi arc surface states terminate into the bulk bands and that these bulk bands disperse linearly, forming Weyl cones. These results are remarkably consistent with recent theoretical predictions of a Weyl semimetal phase in this compound. Our detailed surface and bulk band structure measurements demonstrate that TaAs hosts topologically non-trivial Fermi arcs and Weyl cones, providing the first experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) belong to technologically important compounds. We have explored the structural, elastic, bonding, optoelectronic and some thermo-physical properties of ZrX2 (X = S, Se, Te) TMDCs in details via ab-initio technique in this study. Elastic anisotropy indices, atomic bonding character, optoelectronic properties and thermo-physical parameters including melting temperature and minimum phonon thermal conductivity are investigated for the first time. All the TMDCs under investigation possess significant elastic anisotropy and layered structural features. ZrX2 (X = S, Se, Te) compounds are fairly machinable, and ZrS2 and ZrSe2 are moderately hard. ZrTe2, on the other hand, is significantly softer. Both covalent and ionic bondings contribute in the crystals. Electronic band structure calculations display semiconducting behavior for ZrS2 and ZrSe2 and metallic behavior for ZrTe2. Energy dependent optoelectronic parameters exhibit good correspondence with the underlying electronic energy density of states features. ZrX2 (X = S, Se, Te) compounds absorb ultraviolet radiation effectively. The reflectivity spectrum, R(w), remains over 50% in the energy range from 0 eV to 20 eV for ZrTe2. Therefore, this TMDC has wide band and nonselective high reflectivity and can be used as an efficient reflector to reduce solar heating. Debye temperature, melting point and minimum phonon thermal conductivity of the compounds under study are low and show excellent correspondence with each other and also with the elastic and bonding characteristics.

Abstract:The existence of Weyl nodes predicted in TaAs has been confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which provides potential applications in thermoelectric devices due to the extraordinary transport properties of TaAs. By using first-principles calculations and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory, we study the electrical transport properties of TaAs. High anisotropy is observed in the electrical transport of TaAs. The obtained Seebeck coefficients are in good agreement with experimental values. The lattice dynamics properties of TaAs are also investigated and the obtained phonon frequencies agree well with the measurements. The lattice thermal conductivity is calculated using the self-consistent iterative approach. Anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity is observed as well. Maximum thermoelectric figure of merit zT of 0.63 at 900 K is found for n-doping TaAs along zz direction. Finally, the size dependence of lattice thermal conductivity and corresponding thermoelectric properties are investigated for designing thermoelectric nanostructures. The work sheds light on the nature of the thermoelectric response of Weyl semimetal.
Comprehensive first principles to investigate optoelectronic and transport phenomenon of lead-free double perovskites Ba2AsBO6 (B[bond, double bond]Nb, Ta) compounds

Abstract:In the current work we studied the structural, elastics, electrical, optical, thermoelectric, as well as spectroscopic limited maximum efficiency (SLME) of oxide based Ba2AsBO6 (B[bond, double bond]Nb, Ta) materials. All the calculations were performed using first-principles calculation by employing the WIEN2k code. We checked the stability in diverse forms such as optimization, phonon dispersion, mechanical, formation energy, cohesive energy, and thermal stability is computed. The semiconducting nature of these Ba2AsBO6 (B[bond, double bond]Nb, Ta) systems is revealed by calculating the direct band gap values are 1.97 eV and 1.49 eV respectively. Additionally, we determined the optical properties which analyze the utmost absorption and transition of carriers versus photon energy (eV). Moreover, Ba2AsNbO6 has an estimated SLME of 32 %, making it an encouraging alternative for single-junction solar cells. Lastly, we studied the transport properties against temperature, the chemical potential for p-type and n-type charge carriers at various temperatures. At 300 K, the zT values are found to be 0.757 and 0.751 for Ba2AsBO6 (B[bond, double bond]Nb, Ta) compounds respectively. Both materials were examined as having strong absorption patterns and an excellent figure of merit (ZT), indicating that materials are appropriate for daily life applications.
