Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide exists in various types of waste streams. Herein, surface oxidized stainless steel (SOSS) was applied to electrochemically desulfurize sulfide-containing wastewater. The properties of SOSS were investigated via mutiple analytical approaches, including SEM, XRD, XPS, LSV and CV. The results showed that higher Ni content and larger effective area of SOSS improved the sulfide removal efficiency. The effects of some environmental factors (e.g., initial sulfide concentration, pH, and inorganic ions) on the kinetics of sulfide removal and the formation of reaction products were also investigated. During the subsequent five application cycles, the electrode still maintained high sulfide removal efficiencies (>79%) with each cycle lasting for 64 h. Though the formed elemental sulfur would load on the surface of SOSS, resulting in gradual passivation of the anode, it can be partially dissolved successfully by the cathodeic polarization at -0.38 v vs. RHE for 5 h, and the sulfide removal rate increased from 22.0x10(- 3 )h(- 1 )(the fifth cycle) to 30.7x1010(- 3 )h(- 1) (the sixth cycle). The results of this study showed a great potential for the treatment of sulfide-containing wastewater with a SOSS electrode.
Insight into the Effective Electrocatalytic Sulfide Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using the Surface Oxidized Stainless-Steel Anode and Its Desulfurization Mechanism

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has shown its potential for the real application of H2S emission control in wastewater treatment. In this study, a surface corrosion treatment of stainless steel (SS) was optimized by regulate Ni content in the oxide film on the SS AISI 304 surface for sulfide removal. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and linear sweeping voltammetry results indicated a higher Ni content in the oxide film of surface-oxidized stainless steel (SOSS) attributed to a higher sulfide removal potential. Sulfide removal experiment results showed that SS-150 (with 150 s anodic pretreatment) anodes achieved the highest Ni content of 69% with the best sulfide removal efficiency, i.e., 97% within 48 h, which increased by 20% compared to the untreated SS. This study also demonstrated a strategy for in situ removal of deposited sulfur on the anodes by cathodic treatment at -0.38 V vs. RHE to alleviate the common issue of sulfur passivation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that NiOOH was the major active species in SS-150 oxide film for a faster sulfide removal rate. The study developed a SS surface modification process for Ni content regulation that contributed to better sulfide removal efficiency.
Reconfiguration of Acid Gas Removal Process Matching the Integration of Coal Chemical Industry with Green Hydrogen

Abstract:The focus of the acid gas removal process has shifted from decarbonization and desulfurization to desulfurization in the context of integrating coal chemical technology with green H2 without a water gas shift unit. The conventional Rectisol process, Selexol process, organic amine process, and sulfone-amine process have been reconfigured to form the R-Rectisol process, R-Selexol process, R-MDEA process, and R-Sulfolane-MDEA process to adapt to the shift of acid gas removal target. The removal efficiency of H2S and CO2, process energy consumption, and process cost are investigated to evaluate the technical and economic performance of the above four reconfigured acid gas removal processes. The results indicate that for the R-Recitsol process and R-Selexol process, both high pressure and low temperature increase the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2, thereby enhancing the selective removal of H2S. In contrast, for the R-MDEA process and R-Sulfolane-MDEA process, low pressure and low temperature improve the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2, thereby facilitating the selective removal of H2S. Under optimal operating conditions, the value of relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the RSulfolane-MDEA process is the largest, and the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the R-Rectisol process, RSelexol process and R-MDEA process are only 7.64 %, 12.85 %, and 68.40 % of the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the R-Sulfolane-MDEA process, respectively. Compared to the other three reconfigured acid gas removal processes, the R-Sulfolane-MDEA process demonstrates superior advantages in both energy consumption and economic feasibility, provided that the H2S levels remain below 0.1 ppm in purified syngas. This study aims to enhance the decision-making process for gas purification methods in the coal chemical industry by considering integrated green H2 as an alternative to the water gas shift unit.

Abstract:The proper disposal of Cu-smelting waste acid (CSWA) is a major challenge in sulfide ores pyrometallurgy industry due to its high content of H2SO4, extremely high concentration of As and multiple toxic metals. The neutralization precipitation using cheap CaO is the most widely used process in tackling CSWA. However, a large amount of hazardous wastes covering As and other heavy metals which requires further disposal is generated, and the valuable H2SO4 cannot be reused. Herein, anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is used to continuously produce gaseous H2S for sulfide precipitation of the refractory CSWA and simultaneous fabrication of photo-catalyst for the first time. The 200L AnMBR respectively gained the highest total H2S production of 6.41 g/h and the highest gaseous H2S production of 5.05 g/h under the optimal conditions, being 3–9 times higher than previous reports by other types of bioreactors. And the sulfide precipitation triggered by the maximum gaseous H2S of 5.05 g/h harvested almost 100 % removal for Cu, As and Cd from CSWA within a short time from 0.35 to 3.69 days. Moreover, the phase 1 precipitate covering Cu-S compounds displayed an efficient photo-catalytic activity. The sulfide precipitation by AnMBR showed an application potential in tackling the refractory CSWA and fabrication of valuable nanoparticle photo-catalyst.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur (S0) reduction process has been demonstrated as an attractive and cost-efficient approach for metal-laden wastewater treatment in lab-scale studies. However, the system performance and stability have not been evaluated in pilot- or large-scale wastewater treatment. Especially, the sulfide production rate and microbial community structure may significantly vary from lab-scale system to pilot- or large-scale systems using real domestic sewage as carbon source, which brings questions to this novel technology. In this study, therefore, a pilot-scale sulfur-based sulfidogenic treatment system was newly developed and applied for the treatment of Cu-laden electroplating wastewaters using domestic sewage as carbon source. During the 175-d operation, >99.9% of Cu2+ (i.e., 5580 and 1187 mg Cu/L for two types of electroplating wastewaters) was efficiently removed by the biogenic hydrogen sulfide that produced through S0 reduction. Relatively high level of sulfide production (200 mg S/L) can be achieved by utilizing organics in raw domestic sewage, which was easily affected by the organic content and pH value of the domestic sewage. The long-term feeding of domestic sewage significantly re-shaped the microbial community in sulfur-reducing bioreactors. Compared to the reported lab-scale bioreactors, higher microbial community diversity was found in our pilot-scale bioreactors. The presence of hydrolytic, fermentative and sulfur-reducing bacteria was the critical factor for system stability. Accordingly, a two-step ecological interaction among fermentative and sulfur-reducing bacteria was newly proposed for sulfide production: biodegradable particulate organic carbon (BPOC) was firstly degraded to dissolve organic carbon (DOC) by the hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria. Then, sulfur-reducing bacteria utilized the total dissolved organic carbon (both DOC degraded from BPOC and the original DOC present in domestic sewage) as electron donor and reduced the S0 to sulfide. Afterwards, the sulfide precipitated Cu2+ in the post sedimentation tank. Compared with other reported technologies, the sulfur-based treatment system was remarkable reduced the total chemical cost by 87.5‒99.6% for the same level of Cu2+ removal. Therefore, this pilot-scale study demonstrated that S0 reduction process can be a sustainable technology to generate sulfide for the co-treatment of Cu-laden electroplating wastewater and domestic sewage, achieving higher Cu2+ removal and higher cost-effectiveness than the conventional technologies.

Abstract:Simultaneous treatment of CO2 and H2S by photocatalytic technology is of great significance in mitigating the greenhouse effect and environmental hazards, while producing valuable solar fuels at the same time. In this study, well‐defined CdS/TiO2:Cu hollow spheres with highly dispersed heterointerfaces are successfully constructed for photoreduction of CO2 in presence of in situ generated H2S. Benefiting from the consumption of photo‐generated holes (h+) and large production of protons by H2S decomposition, the generation rates of CO (781.3 µmol·g−1∙h−1, accounting for 94.9 v/v% of CO2 reduction products) and H2 (5875.1 µmol·g−1∙h−1) increased significantly, which are 1.4 and 68.9 times higher than that of the system without H2S, respectively. Moreover, the remediation of photocorroded CdS by H2S prolonged the service life of the heterojunction, and maintained a CO generation rate of 96.8% after 4 cycles with or without H2S. Notably, as a potential syngas production strategy, by adjusting the initial concentration of Na2S, the ratio of CO and H2 is controlled from 1.07 to 7.21 to fulfill the demands of different chemical synthesis. This strategy opens up a new horizon for the combination of energy photocatalysis and environmental photocatalysis, which has great research and application prospects.

Abstract:Reductive sulfur-containing by-products (S-BPs) released from industrial process mainly exist in the simple form of sulfide and sulfite. In this study, recent advances to remove and make full use of reductive S-BPs to achieve efficient contaminant removal and hydrogen production are critically reviewed. Sulfide, serves as both reductant and nucleophile, can form intermediates with the catalyst surface functional group through chemical interaction, efficiently promoting the catalytic reduction process to remove contaminants. Sulfite assisted catalytic process could be classified to the advanced reduction processes (ARPs) and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), mainly depending on the presence of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the solution. During ARPs, sulfite could generate reductive active species including hydrated electron (e aq - ), hydrogen radical (H·), and sulfite radical (SO 3 •− ) under the irradiation of UV light, leading to the efficient reduction removal of a variety of contaminants. During AOPs, sulfite could first produce SO 3 •− under the action of the catalyst or energy, initiating a series of reactions to produce oxysulfur radicals. Various contaminants could be effectively removed under the role of these oxidizing active species. Sulfides and sulfites could also be removed along with promoting hydrogen production via photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes. Besides, the present limitations and the prospects for future practical applications of the process with these S-BPs are proposed. Overall, this review gives a comprehensive summary and aims to provide new insights and thoughts in promoting contaminant removal and hydrogen production through taking full advantage of reductive S-BPs.

Abstract:Sulfidation has been an efficient method for arsenic (As) removal from acid wastewater, yet it is inefficient under neutral and weak acid conditions. The higher pH values resulted in the formation of the unstable As-S precipitates, especially employing Na 2 S as the vulcanizing agent as it can increase the pH value dramatically. Here, we found that SO 2 exhibited excellent multi-roles in As removal when applying H 2 S-sulfidation method. The acidification effect of SO 2 lead to the decreasing of pH values, guaranteed the stable As-S precipitates formation. Through the SO 2 pre-treatment method, the results indicated that the pH values decreased from 7 to 2.8, with the increased H 2 S utilization efficiencies for As(III) removal from 20.9% to 92.0%. Moreover, SO 2 post-treatment not only increased the As(III) removal efficiency, but also eliminated the excessive sulfides in solution. The reaction mechanism analysis indicated that the liquid comproportionation reaction between SO 2 and excessive sulfides plays a vital role. The generated nascent sulfur (N-S 0 ) can adsorb arsenic species and promote the agglomeration of As(III)-S precipitates. Furthermore, the SO 2 and H 2 S co-treatment exhibited excellent As(V) removal performance. This study provides a new alternative method to improve the H 2 S-sulfidation process with SO 2 for As removal from wastewater.

Abstract:Converting SO2 into H2S is of great importance in recovering sulfur from SO2 streams, and even across the sulfur chemistry. However, H2S will comproportionate with SO2, resulting in undesired sulfur deposition to impede SO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a new concept of electrolysis paradigm to produce H2S from SO2 was introduced, wherein a gas-permeable catalyst membrane (Au/PTFE) was designed to in situ synthesis and separate H2S from the electrolyte, avoiding sulfur deposition behavior. This catalyst membrane electrolysis demonstrates a good performance with H2S Faraday efficiency of 99.6 % and separation efficiency of 99.1 %, with superior operational stability (exhibiting 38-hours continuous electrolysis without sulfur deposition). Computational studies and spectroscopic results reveal that S0 is the key intermediate for H2S production from SO2. The in situ separation of H2S not only prevents the S0 formation but also helps to self-clean the catalyst surface.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a hazardous contaminant in many industrial gases and wastewaters and a potential source of sulfur to be recovered, but effective and sustainable recovery technologies are still lacking. Here, we report a novel photoelectrochemical process for synchronous sulfur recovery and removal of organic pollutant, which typically coexist in waste streams, by using solar-simulating light as the sole driving force. In this system, sulfide was selectively converted into high-purity elemental sulfur (S-0) particles at the photoanode, whereas efficient electrochemical oxidation of carbamazepine occurred at the cathode through Fe2+/Fe3+-mediated peroxymonosulfate activation. The formed sulfur particles with initial sizes of below one micrometer gradually grew into larger particles. Iodine ions were used as anodic redox mediator to favor a selective S-0 production in the solution over the formation of sulfite/sulfate at the electrode surface. The practical feasibility of this system was demonstrated by using carbamazepine-spiked lake water samples. Our work suggests a great opportunity for sustainable recovery of sulfur resource with concomitant benefits of pollutant control by using the inexhaustible solar energy.
Realizing high-rate sulfur reduction under sulfate-rich conditions in a biological sulfide production system to treat metal-laden wastewater deficient in organic matter

Abstract:Biological sulfur reduction can theoretically produce sufficient sulfide to effectively remove and recover heavy metals in the treatment of organics-deficient sulfate-rich metal-laden wastewater such as acid mine drainage and metallurgic wastewater, using 75% less organics than biological sulfate reduction. However, it is still unknown whether sulfur reduction can indeed compete with sulfate reduction, particularly under high-strength sulfate conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term feasibility of biological sulfur reduction under high sulfate conditions in a lab-scale sulfur-reducing biological sulfide production (BSP) system with sublimed sulfur added. In the 169-day trial, an average sulfide production rate (SPR) as high as 47 ± 9 mg S/L-h was achieved in the absence of sulfate, and the average SPR under sulfate-rich conditions was similar (53 ± 10 mg S/L-h) when 1300 mg S/L sulfate were fed with the influent. Interestingly, sulfate was barely reduced even at such a high strength and contributed to only 1.5% of total sulfide production. Desulfomicrobium was identified as the predominant sulfidogenic bacterium in the bioreactor. Batch tests further revealed that this sulfidogenic bacteria used elemental sulfur as the electron acceptor instead of the highly bioavailable sulfate, during which polysulfide acted as an intermediate, leading to an even higher bioavailability of sulfur than sulfate. The pathway of sulfur to sulfide conversion via polysulfide in the presence of both sulfur and sulfate was discussed. Collectively, when conditions favor polysulfide formation, sulfur reduction can be a promising and attractive technology to realize a high-rate and low-cost BSP process for treating sulfate-rich metal-laden wastewater.

Abstract:Metal sulfides (MSs) can efficiently entrap thiophilic components, such as elemental mercury (Hg0), and realize environmental remediation. However, there is still a critical problem challenging the extensive application of MSs in related areas, i.e., how to self-regulate their water (H2O) resistance without complexing the sorbent preparation procedure. This work for the first time developed an in situ acid-etching method that self-engineered the water affinity of MSs through changing the interfacial interaction between MSs and Hg0/H2O. The introduction of abundant, undercoordinated sulfur onto the sorbent surface was the primary reason accounting for the significantly improved H2O resistance. The high surface coverage of undercoordinated sulfur induced the formation of polysulfur chains (Sx2-) that stabilized Hg0 via a bridging bond and repelled H2O, attributed to the favorable electron configurations. These properties made the surface of MSs highly hydrophobic and increased the adsorption selectivity toward Hg0 over H2O. The MSs exhibited 100% H2O resistance even in the presence of 20% H2O, which is much higher than the H2O concentration under most practical scenarios. From these perspectives, this work for the first time overcame the detrimental effects of H2O on MSs through a self-regulating way that is scalable and negligibly complexes the sorbent preparation pathway. The highly water-resistant and cost-effective MSs as prepared can serve as efficient Hg0 removal from industrial flue gas in the future.

Abstract:Sulfide wastewater that is anthropogenically generated from industrial activities is highly corrosive, hazardous, and harms the natural ecosystem. This study uses a novel fluidized-bed homogeneous crystallization (FBHC) method to remove sulfide ions from an aqueous solution. Zinc is used as a precipitant to crystallize ZnS homogeneously in the FBHC reactor to reduce the sludge, which is commonly produced in a conventional chemical precipitation process. The optimal pH value, [Zn2+]0/[S2-]0 M ratio, sulfide cross-sectional surface loading (L, kg-S/m2.hr), and hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the system are established, to optimize the sulfur removal efficiency. The maximum crystallization ratio and the total removal efficiency for sulfur are 97.7% and 98.8%, respectively, at pH = 5.4, a [Zn2+]0/[S2-]0 M ratio of 1, a cross-sectional surface loading of 2.2 kg-S/m2.hr, and an HRT number of 6 with an initial sulfur concentration of 320 mg/L. The solid products are collected and identified as zinc sulfide (wurtzite) using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:As the typical hazardous arsenic pollutants, copper smelting flue dust (CSFD) and arsenic sulfide residue (ASR) are produced extensively during copper smelting process, which pose significant pressure on environmental protection and green development of the copper industry. This work proposed an economic, efficient, and applicable approach to treat waste with waste, in which the simultaneous removal and recovery of As from CSFD and ASR were realized by a roasting process, with adding sulfuric acid, at a relatively low temperature (300-350 ℃). The thermodynamic analysis and experiments confirmed that the main phases of As2S3 and S0 in the ASR were used as a reductant for reducing As(Ⅴ) in the CSFD, and the introduction of sulfuric acid favorably enhanced the thermodynamic driving force and greatly lowered the reaction temperature. The results indicated that removal and behavior of As were highly dependent on the mass ratio of ASR to CSFD, roasting temperature, and H2SO4 dosage. By regulating the parameters, the species As2S3, As2O5, and arsenate were all converted to volatile As2O3, which could be captured and deposited in cold water. In the optimized co-treatment, a satisfied As removal efficiency of 96.12% was achieved, while getting the 97.03% pure As2O3.
Desulfurization of hydrophilic and hydrophobic volatile reduced sulfur with elemental sulfur production in denitrifying bioscrubber

Abstract:Volatile reduced sulfur compounds were odor and irritating toxic gas, which were commonly produced during waste and wastewater treatment. The autotrophic sulfide denitrifiers converted sulfide as alternative electron acceptor to reduce nitrate, which achieved simultaneous denitrification and sulfur oxidation. In this study, to investigate the effect of sulfur compounds solubility, S/N and oxygen on sulfur and nitrogen removal, a bioscrubber was studied for treatment of hydrophilic H2S and hydrophobic CS2. Both H2S and CS2 could be efficiently removed (99%), with the highest sulfide loading of 46.9 gS/m3·d. The elemental sulfur production was strongly correlated to S/N ratio (r = 0.969, p = 0.03), the highest elemental sulfur production efficiency achieved 92.0% under S/N ratio of 2.0 for treatment of H2S. Thiobacillus sp. bacteria was the pre-dominated sulfide-dependent denitrifiers (78.2%) before exposing to oxygen, while abundance of Cryseobacterium and unclassified Xanthomonadaceae aerobic sulfide oxidizer dramatically increased up to 40% and 7.3% after aeration. Remarkably increasing production of extracellular polymeric substance (197%) was observed after treatment of CS2, which might promote the hydrolysis of CS2 and stabilization of elemental sulfur. This study demonstrated the possibility to apply sulfide-dependent denitrification process for treatment of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic volatile reduced sulfur waste gas with elemental sulfur recovery.

Abstract:Mercury, a heavy metal, seriously threatens the natural environment and human health. This work synthesized a series of CuS materials by controlling the crystals growth time, growth rate and direction, using for Hg 0 removal. XRD, BET, SEM, TGA, XPS, etc characterized these materials. It can be found that CuS-2h had lower crystallinity and rougher surface compared to other materials. The appropriate crystallinity make CuS exposed more active sites and defects. The performance and reaction mechanism of removing Hg 0 of CuS materials with different morphologies were systematically studied. The results showed that CuS-2h materials reacted had excellent mercury removal efficiency in the temperature of 50 °C–125 °C, and had excellent anti-toxicity to SO 2 . The advantages of this material can be attributed to the fact that copper can expose more active sites to sulfur-based materials. The active components of CuS-2h with higher oxidation potential, S 2 2− , was conducive to electron transfer and can promote the oxidative adsorption of mercury.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods can help manage sulfide in wastewater, which poses environmental and health concerns due to its toxicity, malodor, and corrosiveness. In addition, sulfur could be recovered as fertilizer and commodity chemicals from sulfide-containing wastewaters. Wastewater characteristics vary widely among wastewaters; however, it remains unclear how these characteristics affect electrochemical sulfate production. In this study, we evaluated how four characteristics of influent wastewaters (electrolyte pH, composition, sulfide concentration, and buffer strength) affect sulfide removal (sulfide removal rate, sulfide removal efficiency) and sulfate production metrics (sulfate production rate, sulfate production selectivity). We identified that electrolyte pH (3 × difference, i.e., 25.1 to 84.9 μM h −1 in average removal rate within the studied pH range) and sulfide concentration (16 × difference, i.e., 82.1 to 1347.2 μM h −1 in average removal rate) were the most influential factors for electrochemical sulfide removal. Sulfate production was most sensitive to buffer strength (6 × difference, i.e., 4.4 to 27.4 μM h −1 in average production rate) and insensitive to electrolyte composition. Together, these results provide recommendations for the design of wastewater treatment trains and the feasibility of applying electrochemical methods to varying sulfide-containing wastewaters. In addition, we investigated a simultaneous multi-nutrient (sulfur and nitrogen) process that leverages electrochemical stripping to further enhance the versatility and compatibility of electrochemical nutrient recovery.
