Clinical Manifestations of Delayed-onset Consecutive Esotropia after Surgical Correction of Intermittent Exotropia

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the clinical features and prognosis of a delayed-onset consecutive esotropia (ET) after surgical correction of intermittent exotropia. Methods: Thirty-four patients who developed consecutive ET after primary bilateral lateral rectus recession for the surgical correction of intermittent exotropia were evaluated retrospectively and were divided into two groups: delayed-onset consecutive ET group and the continuous consecutive ET group. Patients who developed esodeviation after once recovering to orthotropia within 1 month after the operation were included in the delayed-onset consecutive ET group, and patients with continuous esodeviation after the operation were included in the continuous consecutive ET group. We evaluated preoperative and postoperative angle of deviation, suppression, stereopsis, and follow up periods between the two groups and compared re-operation and success following non-surgical treatment between the continuous consecutive ET group and the delayed-onset consecutive ET group. Results: Among 34 patients with consecutive ET, 27 patients (79.4%) were included in the delayed-onset consecutive ET group, and seven patients (23.3%) were included in the continuous group. Success rate of non-surgical treatment was not statistically significant between two groups (p = 0.55), but it was higher in the delayed-onset group with 37.5%, and 25% of patients in continuous group were successfully recovered to straight alignment. Duration of orthotropia in delayed-onset group was 7.4 ± 6.0 months (range, 2-29 months). Age, sex, preoperative refractive error, preoperative exodeviation, suppression, and near steroacuity were not statistically significant between two groups (p > 0.05, all). In the delayed-onset group, three patients (11.1%) underwent re-operation, while three patients (42.9%) in continuous consecutive ET group underwent re-operation (p = 0.048). Conclusions: Re-operation rate of delayed-onset consecutive ET after surgical correction of intermittent exotropia was lower than that of continuous consecutive ET.

Abstract:Purpose: To conduct a comparison of the long-term surgical outcomes of bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) vs unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (RR) in treatment of intermittent exotropia. Design: Nonrandomized, retrospective case series. Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent BLR or RR for treatment of intermittent exotropia between 2002 and 2006 and had ≥2 years' follow-up were recruited. Surgical outcomes were grouped according to postoperative angle of deviation as overcorrection (esophoria/tropia >5 Δ), success (esophoria/tropia ≤5 Δ to exophoria/tropia ≤10 Δ), or undercorrection/recurrence (exophoria/tropia >10 Δ), and were compared between the BLR group and the RR group at postoperative 1 day, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years, and at the final examination. Results: Of 128 patients, 55 underwent BLR and 73 underwent RR. The mean follow-up period was 44.2 months in the BLR group and 47.8 months in the RR group. At 1 day, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after surgery, surgical outcomes in each group were not different (P > .05) However, the final outcome at a mean of 3.8 years was significantly different between the groups, demonstrating a higher success rate in the BLR group than in the RR group (58.2% vs 27.4%, P < .01). Cumulative probability of survival from recurrence was higher in the BLR group than in the RR group (P = .01, log-rank test). Recurrences were most common within 6 months from surgery; however, after that, recurrences occurred continuously in the RR group and rarely in the BLR group. Conclusion: Surgical outcomes by 2 years after surgery for intermittent exotropia were not different between the BLR and RR groups. However, final outcomes were better in the BLR group than in the RR group. This may be caused by the difference of recurrence rate over time: continuous recurrence of exotropia occurred in the RR group, while recurrence was low in the BLR group after postoperative 6 months.

Abstract:Purpose: To present long-term motor and sensory outcomes after surgery for infantile esotropia and assess risk factors for residual and consecutive deviations.Methods: Data of infantile esotropia patients operated between 2002 and 2016 with minimum follow-up of 2 years were retrospectively reviewed.Results: Among a total of 62 patients, 35 had a successful motor outcome (alignment within 10 PD from orthotropia) after one surgery (Group A), while 27 required horizontal reoperation (Group B). Patients with residual esotropia had larger preoperative angle of deviation (P = .005) and younger age at first surgery (P = .01), while consecutive exotropia was associated with longer follow-up (P = .03) and higher rate of DVD (P = .003) compared to patients in Group A. Stereopsis was present in 30.3% of patients in Group A and associated with younger age at first surgery (P = .03).Conclusions: Successful motor alignment may be obtained with single surgery in infantile esotropia; however, reoperations are common. Younger age at first surgery may be associated with both higher rate of stereopsis and risk of reoperation. Careful preoperative assessment and surgical timing, with long-term postoperative follow-up is required to achieve satisfactory outcome.
Comparison of Long-term Surgical Outcomes of Two-muscle Surgery in Basic-type Intermittent Exotropia: Bilateral versus Unilateral

Abstract:Purpose: To compare long-term surgical outcomes after bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) and unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (RR) for the treatment of basic-type intermittent exotropia. Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent BLR or RR for treatment of intermittent exotropia between 1999 and 2010 and underwent ≥5 years of follow-up were recruited for this study. Surgical outcomes were grouped according to postoperative angle of deviation: overcorrection (esophoria/tropia >8 prism diopters [Δ]), success (esophoria/tropia ≤8Δ to exophoria/tropia ≤8Δ), and undercorrection/recurrence (exophoria/tropia >8Δ). Outcomes were compared between the BLR group and the RR group at postoperative week 1, months 1 and 6, and years 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Results: Of 99 patients, 37 underwent BLR and 62 underwent RR. At postoperative month 6 (97.3% vs. 82.3%, p = 0.045) and year 1 (91.9% vs. 74.2%, p = 0.040), the surgical success rates in the BLR group were significantly higher than in the RR group. Recurrence of exophoria/tropia most commonly occurred between 2 and 3 years after surgery in the BLR group, but continuous recurrences were found in the RR group. At postoperative year 5, the surgical success rate was 54.1% in the BLR group and 41.9% in the RR group (p = 0.403). The reoperation rate was 24.3% in the BLR group and 33.9% in the RR group (p = 0.317). Conclusions: Surgical outcomes 5 years after surgery for intermittent exotropia were comparable between the BLR and RR groups. The surgical success rate and the reoperation rate were not significantly different between the BLR and RR groups.
Long-term Surgical Outcomes of Initial Postoperative Overcorrection in Adults with Intermittent Exotropia

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between initial postoperative overcorrection and long-term surgical success in exotropia patients. Methods: The medical records of 46 patients who underwent surgery for intermittent exotropia after the age of 18 were enrolled. Enrolled patients also had at least 2 years of postoperative follow-up. Based on the initial postoperative deviation at distance measured by prism and the alternating cover test at 1 week, patients were assigned to one of the following groups: group A included patients who demonstrated any esodeviation, while group B included patients who showed orthophoria to exodeviation of 10 prism diopters. The records were analyzed to determine the preoperative deviation with stereoacuity and postoperative deviations with stereoacuity at the follow-up examinations at the following intervals: 1 week; 1, 3, and 6 months; and 1 and 2 years. A comparison between groups for demographic data and preoperative and postoperative angles of deviation was performed using analysis of variance. Results: Of the 46 patients with intermittent exotropia included in this study, 18 (39%) belonged to group A, while 28 (73%) belonged to group B. The postoperative angle of deviation for distant fixation until 2 years of follow-up showed statistically significant differences in each group (p < 0.003 in all comparisons). The amount of exodrift until 2 years in group A (from ?9.7 ± 6.1 to 1.6 ± 3.7) was greater than that in group B (from 2.0 ± 2.7 to 6.8 ± 5.6). The long-term surgical success rate within 2 years of surgery was significantly better in group A than in group B (p = 0.027). The number of patients with intermittent diplopia and the duration of diplopia were greater in group A (n = 8) than in group B (n = 2). Conclusions: Long-term surgical success was achieved in 89% of patients who were initially overcorrected. Overcorrection of an average of 10 prism diopters at the first postoperative week was found to be associated with a more favorable long-term surgical outcome.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the long-term surgical efficacy of lateral rectus advancement (LRadv) in patients with consecutive esotropia (CET). Methods: The medical records of 30 patients who developed CET after bilateral lateral rectus (BLR) recession for exotropia (XT) between 2012 and 2020 were reviewed. The characteristics of patients during their XT surgery were summarized. Among them, 15 patients who underwent LRadv as CET treatment with at least a 1-year follow-up were included to evaluate the long-term efficacy of this surgical approach. The main outcomes were the pre- and post-operative angle of deviation after LRadv. Surgical success was defined as the postoperative deviation within 10 prism diopters (PD), and reoperation was not needed. All data were expressed as median and interquartile ranges. Results: The median follow-up was 34 months after LRadv surgery. The median postoperative deviation ranged from 28 to 1 PD at 1 year (P < 0.05) and to 5 PD at the final follow-up (P < 0.05). The deviation at each follow-up time showed no statistically significant difference (P > 0.05). The final surgical success was reduced compared to 1 day and 1 year postoperatively (60% VS 100% and 66.7%, respectively). Undercorrection and overcorrection both occurred at the final follow-up. Conclusion: Although the immediate surgical outcome of LRadv was satisfactory, the success rate reduced with time, which suggests long-term observation is necessary to detect and timely provide appropriate interventions for overcorrection or undercorrection.
Long-term ocular alignment after bilateral lateral rectus recession in children with infantile and intermittent exotropia

Abstract:Purpose: To compare postoperative drift after bilateral lateral rectus recession for infantile exotropia (XT) and for intermittent XT and to compare initial postoperative alignment with long-term motor outcome. Methods: Medical records of all patients with infantile exotropia or intermittent exotropia who had undergone bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession surgery with a follow-up longer than 3 years were reviewed. The pre- and postoperative angles of deviation at distance and at near and postoperative drift at distance were compared. Surgical outcome was categorized as "success" (esotropia <6(Δ) or exotropia <11(Δ)), "recurrence" (>10(Δ) exotropia), or "overcorrection" (>5(Δ) of esotropia). Results: The overall mean postoperative exotropic drift at 3 years was 10.4(Δ) in the infantile XT group and 7.2(Δ) in the intermittent XT group (P = 0.05). Both groups had a low success rate at 3 years: 41% in the infantile XT group and 51% in the intermittent XT group (P = 0.270). For patients with an initial esotropia of 0(Δ) to 10(Δ), the success rate at 3 years was 86% in the infantile XT group (12 of 14) and 65% in the intermittent XT group (28 of 43). Conclusions: Postoperative exotropic drift is clinically similar in patients with intermittent versus infantile exotropia. Esotropia of 0(Δ) to 10(Δ) during the early postoperative period may be associated with the best long-term ocular alignment.
Postoperative outcomes in children with intermittent exotropia from a population-based cohort

Abstract:Purpose: To describe the long-term surgical outcomes in a population-based cohort of children with intermittent exotropia. Methods: The medical records of all children (<19 years) who were diagnosed with intermittent exotropia as residents of Olmsted County Minnesota, from January 1, 1975, through December 31, 1994, and managed with surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Of 184 patients with intermittent exotropia, 61 (33%) underwent surgery at a mean age of 7.6 years (range, 3.2 to 23 years). Twelve of the 61 children (19.7%) underwent a second surgery (10 for recurrent exotropia and 2 for consecutive esotropia), and no patient received 3 or more surgeries during a mean follow-up of 10 years from the first surgery. The final postoperative measurements were recorded in 56 of 61 patients (92%) at a mean of 7.4 years (range, 0 to 18 years) after the first surgery: 31 of the 56 (55%) were within 9(Delta) of orthotropia at distance and 25 of 55 (45%) had better than 60 seconds of stereopsis. The Kaplan-Meier rate of developing >/=10(Delta) of misalignment after the first surgery was 54% by 5 years, 76% by 10 years, and 86% by 15 years. Conclusions: In this population-based study of surgery in children with intermittent exotropia, although only 1 in 5 received a second surgery, after a mean follow-up of 8 years, approximately half were successfully aligned and 45% had high-grade stereopsis.

Abstract:Aim: To discuss the long-term postoperative results of bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) and unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (RR) in therapy of intermittent exotropia. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 213 cases of intermittent exotropia who underwent surgery between 2008 and 2010. The patients were grouped into BLR group and RR group. Motor outcomes were divided into three groups on the basis of the angle of deviation after surgery: overcorrection (esotropia/phoria >5(Δ)), orthophoria (esotropia/phoria ≤5(Δ) to exotropia/phoria ≤10(Δ)), and undercorrection/recurrence (exotropia/phoria >10(Δ)). Titmus test was used to evaluate stereoacuity, the stereoacuity <800s of arc meaned the patients had stereopsis. Surgical outcome including motor criteria and sensory status were compared at postoperative 6, 12, 24mo and at 36mo examination between groups. Results: At 12, 24mo after surgery, the motor outcomes had no difference (P>0.05) between groups. However, the motor outcomes at 6, 36mo were signally different in each group, indicating the success rate in RR group at 6mo was higher than that in BLR group (83.02% vs 82.24%, P<0.05) but the result was contrary at the 3y examination (60.75% vs 43.40%, P<0.05). No statistical significance were found in the sensory outcomes between the groups at mean of 3.7y follow-up. Conclusion: The motor outcomes in RR group were better than in BLR group at 6mo after surgery, while the 3y outcomes were better in BLR group. This may be due to the recurrence rate of the BLR was lower than the RR group's.
Surgical Correction of Consecutive Esotropia With Unilateral Medial Rectus Recession

Abstract:Purpose: Unilateral medial rectus recession is a treatment option to surgically correct consecutive esotropia. This study evaluated the surgical outcomes of patients who underwent unilateral medial rectus recession for the treatment of consecutive esotropia after surgery for intermittent exotropia. Methods: The medical records of 16 patients who underwent surgical correction of consecutive esotropia with unilateral medial rectus recession were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with intermittent exotropia who were previously treated with one or multiple surgical procedures (8 bilateral lateral rectus recession, 7 recess-resect procedure, or 1 bilateral medial rectus resection) were included in the study. Three patients were adults and 13 patients were children. The mean age was 5 years for children and 50.3 years for adults. Consecutive esotropia was defined as residual manifest esodeviation of 10 prism diopters (PD) at 6 months postoperatively. Successful correction of consecutive esotropia was defined as the lack of manifest or intermittent tropia and esophoria/exophoria within 8 PD. Patients with monofixational exotropia were excluded from the study. Results: Unilateral medial rectus recession was successful in the correction of consecutive esotropia in 10 of 16 cases (62.5%). Six of 16 (37.5%) patients had unsatisfactory postoperative alignment, with 5 patients showing recurrence of exotropia. Only one patient was undercorrected. Conclusions: The success rate of surgical correction of consecutive esotropia with single muscle surgery was good. Recurrence of exotropia accounted for most of the failures, and all recurrences occurred in the group of patients initially treated surgically for intermittent exotropia with a recess-resect procedure.
Analysis of postoperative exodrift according to surgical methods for intermittent exotropia

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to compare the periods for exodrift stabilization and the long-term surgical outcomes among different surgical methods in intermittent exotropia. Methods: The medical records of 350 patients who had undergone intermittent exotropia correcting surgery [unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (R&R, n = 221), bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR, n = 51) and unilateral lateral rectus recession (ULR, n = 78)] with a postoperative follow-up period of 1.5 years or more were retrospectively reviewed. The deviation angles every 6 months after surgery, periods of exodrift stabilization and surgical outcomes were analysed. The period of postoperative exodrift stabilization was defined as when exodrift was no longer significantly different from that at the next visit (p > 0.05). An alignment of 5 PD (prism diopters) esotropia to 10 PD exotropia at a distance and near fixation was considered surgical success. Results: The mean angle of exodeviation was significantly different among surgical procedures at postoperative 1 month (BLR > ULR > R&R, p < 0.001); however, there were no differences among the procedures at 6 months (p = 0.088). The periods of exodrift stabilization were 6 months after ULR, 1 year after BLR and 4.5 years after R&R. The surgical success and reoperation rates did not show significant differences among procedures at the final follow-up. Conclusion: Patients undergoing R&R showed smaller exodeviation shortly after surgery but required a longer period to stabilize the exodrift. Following ULR, exodeviation was larger in the early postoperative period, but the exodrift was stabilized earlier. Therefore, the long-term surgical outcomes were similar among ULR, BLR and R&R.

Abstract:The long-term results of surgical treatment of intermittent exotropia (X(T)) according to the type of surgery are controversial. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare the long-term results between unilateral recession-resection (RR) and bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) with an average follow-up of 9.5 years in children with basic-type X(T). Patients with basic-type X(T), who underwent RR (RR group) or BLR (BLR group) and were followed-up for more than 5 years postoperatively, were analyzed. Of the 560 patients, 363 patients received BLR and 197 patients underwent RR. There was no significant difference in the success rates between the two groups until postoperative 3 years. At an average of 9.5 ± 2.6 years after surgery, the success rate of the RR group was significantly higher than that of the BLR group starting from the fourth post-operative year until the last follow-up examination (64.5% vs 43.3%, P < 0.001). By multivariate analysis, preoperative hyperopia of more than + 2.00 diopters, younger age of onset, younger age at surgery, larger exodeviation at near than at distance of > 5 prism diopters, and the type of surgery (BLR) were risk factors of recurrence. In conclusion, RR was more successful than BLR with a lower recurrence rate in the long-term follow-up of patients with basic-type X(T).
Long-term surgical outcomes of basic-type exotropia in patients with hyperopia

Abstract:Background: To investigate the surgical outcomes of basic-type exotropia in patients with hyperopia. Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent surgery for basic-type exotropia and had been followed up for ≥ 2 years were retrospectively recruited. Patients with myopia and spherical equivalent (SE) < -1.0 diopters (D) were excluded. The patients were classified according to the SE: group H had a SE ≥ + 1.0 D, and group E had -1.0 ≤ SE < + 1.0 D. The surgical success rate and sensory outcome were compared. Surgical success was defined as exodeviation ≤ 10 prism diopters (PD) and esodeviation ≤ 5 PD at 6 m fixation. Stereoacuity was measured using the Titmus Preschool Stereoacuity Test. Results: Seventy-five patients (24 males and 51 females, mean age 5.1 ± 2.6 years, range 2.7-14.8) were included. The SE ranged from -0.9 to 4.4 and 21 patients were classified into group H and 54 into group E. The success rates were higher in group H than in group E during the entire follow-up period, but the differences were significant only at the final examination. At the final follow-up, 11 of the 21 (52.4%) patients in group H and 15 of the 54 (27.7%) in group E maintained successful alignment, whereas 10 (47.6%) and 38 (70.4%) patients exhibited recurrence. Overcorrection was exhibited in one (1.9%) patient in group E. Sensory results were comparable between the groups. The follow-up period did not differ between the two groups. The survival analysis showed no difference in the surgical results between the two groups. Conclusions: Surgery for basic-type intermittent exotropia resulted in superior outcomes in patients with hyperopia compared to those with emmetropia.
Long-Term Surgical Outcomes of Augmented Bilateral Lateral Rectus Recession in Children With Intermittent Exotropia

Abstract:Purpose: To compare the long-term surgical outcomes of augmented bilateral lateral rectus (LR) recession with original surgery. Design: Retrospective, nonrandomized clinical study. Methods: A total of 447 children with ≤35 prism diopters (PD) of basic and divergence excess-type intermittent exotropia, who underwent original bilateral LR recession based on the largest angle measured at distance and near, or augmentation surgery with the surgical dosage augmented by 1.0-1.5 mm more than the original formula were included. Patients were observed for at least 2 years. Success rates, cumulative probabilities of success, factors related to recurrence, and overcorrection were evaluated. Results: At a mean follow-up of 4.0 years, 48 of 101 patients (48%) undergoing original surgery maintained successful alignment within 10 PD of exophoria/tropia and 5 PD of esophoria/tropia; 49 (49%) had recurrence, and 3 (3%) had overcorrection. After augmented surgery, 203 of 346 patients (59%) were successfully aligned, 129 (37%) had recurrence, and 14 (4%) had overcorrection. Augmented surgery showed higher long-term successful alignment rates (P= .047) and lower recurrence rates compared to original surgery (P = .042) and the overcorrection rate was similar between the 2 groups (P= .774). Patients with divergence excess type showed higher cumulative success rates compared to that of the basic type (P = .010) after augmented surgery. Conclusion: Augmented bilateral LR recession resulted in more successful alignment and lower recurrence without higher overcorrection compared to the original surgery for the children with intermittent exotropia. Augmentation of the original table should be considered when planning bilateral LR recession, especially in patients with divergence excess-type exotropia.

Abstract:
Unilateral recession and resection surgery with adjustable suture in adult sensory exotropia: long-term success and exotropic drift

Abstract:We included adult patients (age ≥18 years) with sensory exotropia who underwent unilateral lateral rectus recession with adjustable suture and medial rectus resection with at least 2-year follow-up. Preoperative and postoperative data was collected. Either Krimsky or alternate and prism cover testing was used to measure the angle of deviation depending on patients' fixation ability. Glasses with full refractive correction were worn if they can provide better visual acuity. Exodeviation at near fixation was used in statistical analysis. A total of 38 patients (mean age at surgery 32 ± 13 years) were included. Median preoperative exotropia was 45 PD (IQR 40-55, range 25-70) and median initial postoperative deviation was esotropia 8 PD (IQR 0-11, range from exotropia 8 to esotropia 30). Mean follow-up time was 5 ± 2.5 years (range 2-10). Motor success, defined as a deviation within 10 PD of orthotropia, was found in 50% and 42% of patients at 2-year and last follow-up. Initial postoperative deviation and amount of lateral rectus recession were significantly associated with long-term outcome (p = .006 and 0.029). Patients with initial moderate and minimal overcorrection had higher success rates (67% and 62%) than patients with initial orthotropia or undercorrection (10%) (p = .002). Median overall rate of exotropic drift was 8 PD/year (IQR 6-13, range from esotropic drift 8 to exotropic drift 26). Time to failure in nonsuccess group was 24 months (IQR 21-24, range 2-24). In conclusion, unilateral recession and resection surgery with adjustable suture in adult sensory exotropia achieved 50% success at 2 years. Initial postoperative moderate overcorrection results provide the highest chance for long-term success. The majority of patients developed exotropic drift with time and time to failure was 2 years.
Outcomes for Intermittent Exotropia Using Three Common Surgical Approaches

Abstract:Purpose: To compare a single surgeon's surgical outcomes for treating intermittent exotropia using bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR), unilateral lateral rectus recession and medial rectus resection (RR), and unilateral lateral rectus recession and medial rectus plication (RP). Methods: A retrospective review of all surgeries for basic intermittent exotropia between 2015 and 2023 was performed. Only patients with initial correction using BLR, RR, or RP were included. Exclusion criteria included age older than 18 years, vertical deviation, any nonrefractive ocular diagnoses, prior ocular surgery, and inadequate follow-up. Results: There were 460 patients identified; 123 met inclusion criteria with 54 in the BLR group, 41 in the RR group, and 28 in the RP group. The average preoperative distance alignment (and standard error) values for the BLR, RR, and RP groups were 25.07 (7.35), 22.44 (5.95), and 23.84 (6.42) prism diopters (PD), respectively. At 1 year, the postoperative distance alignment values for the BLR, RR, and RP groups were 8.72 (7.89), 7.46 (6.31), and 12.83 (6.82) PD, respectively ( P = .03). A subanalysis found a significant difference between the BLR and RP ( P = .02) and RR and RP ( P = .02) groups. There was no difference between the BLR and RR groups ( P = .57). Conclusions: This study of three surgical approaches for intermittent exotropia found RP had a significantly larger angle of exodeviation compared to BLR and RR at 1 year of follow-up. Factors Associated with Surgical Outcomes after Bilateral Lateral Rectus Recession in Children with Intermittent Exotropia

Abstract:Backgroud: To analyze the factors associated with surgical outcomes after bilateral rectus recession (BLR) in children with intermittent exotropia (IXT). Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 125 patients who had all received preoperative patch treatment with a ≥1 year follow-up. The surgical outcomes were grouped as success (esodeviation ≤5 PD to exodeviation ≤10 PD) or failure (esodeviation >5 PD or exodeviation >10 PD) according to the angle of deviation at 1 year postoperatively. The patients' magnitude of exodeviation, near and distant stereoacuity, and 3-mo patch responses were assessed. The factors associated with the surgical outcomes were determined using univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Of the 125 patients, 102 (81.6%) and 23 (18.4%) were assigned to the success and failure groups, respectively. According to the univariate analysis, the absence of anisometropia, a smaller preoperative near exodeviation, a better near stereopsis, a smaller magnitude of deviation on day 1 postoperatively, and response to patching were significantly associated with surgical success for IXT after 1 year. In the multivariate analysis, distant esotropic deviation on day 1 postoperatively and response to patching were the factors affecting successful surgical outcomes. Conclusions: Esotropic distant deviation on day 1 postoperatively is a prognostic factor for favorable surgical outcomes. Preoperative patching could be a factor influencing surgical success in children with IXT.
