Abstract:Liquid lubricant of low affinity makes slippery coatings widely used in lubricating, anti-biofouling, anti-icing, fluid guiding, and drag reduction. Two critical challenges, however, remain in the practical application of slippery coatings consisting of liquid lubricants: (1) universality regardless of roughness and chemical composition of substrates, (2) stability of surface lubricity against evaporation. Herein, a chemical method is reported to create a universal and stable slippery lubricant-adhesive cooperated coating (SLACC) through acid catalyzed dehydration reaction between the phenolic hydroxyl of polydopamine (PDA), with universal (for challenge-1) and strong (for challenge-2) adhesion properties, and liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), with lubricant properties. Through overlying PDMS on PDA, a spatial gradient interpenetration of chemical combined PDA and PDMS leaving lubricant PDMS at the outermost of coating is achieved. This structure contributes to the following performances of SLACC: nearly universality suitable for 100 different abiotic or biotic substrates and stability sustainable for long-term usages, UV radiating, refrigerating, hot air drying, freeze drying, knife scratch and abrasion. This proposed strategy is envisioned anti-fouling from plane to tube and exhibits drag reduction in confined space.
Durable slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces for effective corrosion protection of aluminum alloy in ethylene glycol-water solutions

Abstract:Aluminum (Al) alloys are extensively utilized in liquid-cooling heat dissipation systems owing to their superior strength-to-weight performance, ease of processing, and high thermal conductivity. However, they are susceptible to corrosion in the cooling medium, such as ethylene glycol-water solutions. This study presents a straightforward and cost-effective method to create a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) designed to effectively prevent corrosion of the 6061 Al alloy in ethylene glycol-water solutions. Micro/nano hierarchical structures were achieved on the SLIPS through plasma electrolytic oxidation and hydrothermal treatment. Following the modification of low-surface-energy materials and the infusion of silicone oil, the SLIPS exhibited an outstanding slippery property, allowing ethylene glycol-water droplets to effortlessly slide down the inclined surface at an angle of 1.1°. Additionally, the SLIPS demonstrated remarkable anti-corrosion performance against ethylene glycol-water solutions, with a minimum corrosion current density ( I corr ) of 2.4 × 10 −10 A·cm −2 . Crucially, long-term immersion test results on corrosion resistance revealed that the SLIPS provided reliable corrosion protection for the 6061 Al alloy, exhibiting an I corr increased by 4 orders of magnitude compared to a smooth substrate. These findings hold significant potential for advancing the widespread application of SLIPS in liquid-cooling heat dissipation systems.

Abstract:Transmission aluminum conductors in coastal areas are highly susceptible to corrosion by salt and acidic solutions, which leads to a decrease in the mechanical strength of the transmission conductors and even causes serious accidents of fracture. Traditional anti-corrosion methods have problems such as huge costs and low efficiency, and superhydrophobic coatings based on the lotus effect show poor durability. Herein, slippery liquid infused porous surface (SLIPS) for enhanced corrosion resistance was successfully prepared on 1060 pure aluminum (Bare) using anodizing combined with dimethyl silicone oil impregnation. The corrosion tendency and long-term corrosion resistance of SLIPS in simulated marine atmosphere were investigated. SLIPS exhibited the lowest corrosion tendency than Bare and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). The corrosion current of Bare (7.85 × 10 −7 A/cm 2 ) was remarkably decreased by SLIPS to only 1.85 × 10 −10 A/cm 2 . SLIPS showed excellent corrosion resistance in 14-day salt spray corrosion and 30-day simulated seawater immersion. After prolonged corrosion, SLIPS still displayed very low corrosion current and extremely high lubricant layer resistance. The corrosion weight gain of SLIPS was reduced by one order of magnitude than Bare. Under the synergistic effect of the aluminum oxide layer and lubricant, SLIPS presented certain self-healing performance and could maintain good anti-corrosion performance for a long time.

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are gaining remarkable amount of interest because of their exceptional liquid and solid repellency properties, their tolerance to high pressures and transparency. The lubricant layer may be depleted, leading to the loss of the “slippery” characteristics of the SLIPSs. Herein, we aimed to increase the lubricant storage capacity to enhance the long-term stability of SLIPSs through the construction of a hierarchical structure on the alloy substrates; the SLIPS herein thus represents a new kind of anti-corrosion material. By comparing the wetting speed of the lubricant and shear resistance properties, we showed that SLIPS with a ZnO/Co3O4/SiO2 hierarchical structure provided the best lubricant wettability among the samples investigated herein; the lubricant was contained in the interior of this sample, thus providing the highest shear-tolerance observed. We also investigated the anti-corrosion property of SLIPSs that comprised ZnO/Co3O4/SiO2. The hierarchical structure had enough space to store the lubricant, which provided excellent corrosion protection for the alloy substrate.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys possess many exceptional advantages and attract much interest from researchers. However, the poor corrosion resistance significantly restricts their extensive applications in industry. Herein, a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS), with good surface hydrophobicity, anti-corrosion, anti-wear, self-cleaning and self-healing performances, was developed on AZ31 Mg alloy. MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with nanoporous structure were first in-situ synthesized on AZ31. Especially, an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor of sodium benzoate was intercalated into MgAl-LDHs to improve the corrosion resistance. After low-surface-energy modification and infusion of lubricant, the desired SLIPS with a homogeneous liquid layer was finally formed. The SLIPS showed good repellency to water to provide superior corrosion protection for the underlying AZ31, with the lowest corrosion current density of 1.93 × 10−9 A cm−2 and the largest impedance modulus of 1.18 × 107 Ω cm2. In comparison with the bare AZ31, the SLIPS exhibited enhanced friction-reducing and anti-wear performance because of the lubricating effect of the infused silicone oil and nanosheets of MgAl-LDHs. In addition, the SLIPS performed well in the self-cleaning and self-healing tests, showing potential to be widely used to enlarge the industrial applications of Mg alloys.

Abstract:The corrosion issue of metals is common and has significant impact on social development. In recent decades, the novel slippery surface (lubricant infused surface) inspired by "Nepenthes pitcher plant" has attracted extensive attentions for corrosion protection on account of its superior water repellency. However, most of the construction process for slippery surface was complex and the lubricant was easy to be dissipated in air or liquid environment. In this work, a facile hydrogen bubble dynamic template method (HBTM) was applied to construct porous structure, and the stable phase-change material paraffin was then infused into the porous structure for solid slippery surface. The results showed that the morphology of obtained sample constructed at 3 A·cm−2 exhibited a homogeneously porous structure. In addition, the slippery surface could be self-healing with thermally assistant after mechanical abrasion. More importantly, the slippery surface showed excellent anti-corrosion performance with a corrosion current density of 1.138 × 10-7 A cm-2. It was worth mentioning that the corrosion resistance of the slippery surface was still very good even after immersion in NaCl solution for 3 weeks. The fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet results revealed that the dissolution of paraffin in NaCl solution can be neglected, indicating an excellent stability. Thus, the facile method has great significance for guiding the fabrication of slippery surface and we envision that the solid slippery surface can effectively protect metal materials from corrosion.

Abstract:Background Metal corrosion causes tremendous economic losses, including Mg and its alloys. The development of protective coatings is a good strategy to alleviate or inhibit corrosion. Methods Herein, a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) was fabricated on the AZ31 Mg alloy substrate, based on ZnAl-layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH). Especially, the electrolyte pH was adjusted to synthesize ZnAl-LDH with different morphology to accommodate the most silicone oil for SLIPSs. Significant findings A smooth and homogeneous liquid layer was stably anchored in the ZnAl-LDH, forming a SLIPS. Although water contact angle was less than 150° for the SLIPS, the water droplet can easily slide on the surface, presenting low adhesion to the external species. The SLIPS showed the best corrosion protection, with the lowest corrosion current density of 5.01 × 10 −9 A cm −2 and largest impedance modulus of 4.92 × 10 7 Ω cm 2 . Moreover, a long-term immersion test and stability examinations in harsh conditions were carried out to further evaluate the performances of superhydrophobic surface and SLIPS. The much more stable liquid layer than air pockets made the SLIPS perform better and provide reliable corrosion protection. Therefore, SLIPSs can further promote the wide applications of Mg alloys. Abstract:Metal corrosion is a headache in marine industry. The existing technologies can hardly provide an effective long-term corrosion protection. Biomimetic slippery lubricant infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been developed as a potential alternative technique to resolve this problem. Herein, a stable triple-layered slippery surface which consist of compact-nickel-underlayer/porous-nickel-midlayer/PDMS/paraffin infused toplayer was designed and developed for corrosion protection. This composite surface exhibited a low sliding angle with good stability and thermal assitant self-healing property. Simultaneously, it demonstrated good anti-corrosion property with an extremly low corrosion current density and a large impedance of 2.301 × 107 Ω·cm−2, the as-prepared sample even can provide efficient corrosion protection for a long-term immersion in NaCl solution. Furthermore, the interface erosion mechanism was studied via the assistance of electrochemical and surface analysis techniques. The results revealed that no corrosion products were generated which further proved the good anti-corrosion performance. We believe that this triple-layered slippery surface can broaden the application of metals in the field of marine and other industries.

Abstract:Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surface (SLIPS) has been shown promising potentials in the field of metal corrosion protection. However, the complicated strategy curbs its forward application. In this work, epoxy resin (ER) coating with surface texture was prepared by soft lithography, and the ER-based SLIPS was easily obtained through subsequent modification treatment and lubricating oil injection process. SEM images revealed that the micromorphology of sandpaper was perfectly replicated to ER coating surface. Due to the mineral oil film locked by surface texture with fluorinated layer, the wettability test demonstrated that ER-based SLIPS had excellent hydrophobic property and low sliding angle with 3.5°. Benefiting from the low surface energy characteristic of oil film and its barrier effect to corrosive media, the ER-based SLIPS exhibited fascinating anti-corrosion performance. All these properties indicated the great possibilities of future applications of the ER-based SLIPS in the field of corrosion protection.

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) is a rising star in corrosion protection owing to its outstanding corrosive medium resistance and self-healing property. The large-area and facile fabrication of SLIPS remains a challenge lying on the way of its practical application. Herein, we develop a novel SLIPS based on a porous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate fabricated by thermally induced phase separation. A sphere-packing structure can be easily obtained by blade-coating followed by cooling. The SLIPS exhibits an extremely low sliding angle of 5.8 degrees so that it can resist the fouling of even the Chinese ink, ascribing to its slippery dynamic surface with low surface energy. We also evaluated the anti-corrosion performance of the SLIPS and superhydrophobic PVDF coating by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning Kelvin probe technique (SKP), both of which exhibited enhanced corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution due to the physical oil and air barriers against the corrosive medium penetration. Nevertheless, the SLIPS coatings performed outstanding self-healing properties because of the high fluidity of infused oil to recover the surface damages, and the self-healing process was recorded by the SKP.

Abstract:Aluminum-based superhydrophobic surfaces are attracting great interest in many fields, such as aerospace, steamship. But the use of these materials in cold conditions has been severely limited because of the inevitable frost and ice formation on the surface. The research shows that the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) cannot realize effective anti-ice, and even the rough structure of the surfaces increases the adhesion force of ice, which brings great difficulty to deice. It is important to prepare a de-icing aluminum-based surface. We successfully prepared a slippery lubricant-infused porous surface, which not only has the self-cleaning property, non-infiltration and durability like the SHS, but also has the obvious effect of postponing the freezing, and more importantly, it has obvious advantages in passive defrosting, compared with SHS.

Abstract:Slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have been considered to be potential and effective method for anti-icing. Much work needed to be done for the application in field. In this study, SLIPS were successfully fabricated on 7075-T651 aluminum alloy by anodizing in phosphoric acid solution with three different voltage parameters and coating lubricant. Then the most suitable anodization parameters of samples were selected through the anti-icing performance tests. The best as-prepared surface exhibited ultralow ice-adhesion strength, which reduced from 261 to 6 kPa. Meanwhile, the freezing time of water-drop on aluminum alloy surfaces have been dramatically delayed at −5 and −10 °C (humidity of 75% ± 5%), respectively. Moreover, the durability of the SLIPS have also been investigated. Cycles of icing/deicing, mechanical damage, thermal and UV exposure were used to investigate the durability of SLIPS, and SLIPS could still show low ice-adhesion strength.

Abstract:A slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) was developed, based on MgAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH), in order to improve the corrosion and wear resistance of AZ31 Mg alloys. In particular, different concentrations of SiO 2 nanoparticles were incorporated into the silicone oil to further ameliorate the performances of Mg alloys, which can effectively seal the nanopores constructed by MgAl-LDH. With increasing SiO 2 nanoparticle concentration, the nanosheet microstructure of MgAl-LDH was gradually covered by the hierarchical structure of SiO 2 nanoparticles. The formed composite SiO 2 -SLIPSs exhibited good surface hydrophobicity and superior corrosion and wear resistance. When the concentration of SiO 2 nanoparticle was 10 mg mL -1 , the composite SLIPS showed the best performances, with the lowest corrosion current density of 2.43 × 10 -10 A cm -2 and wear volume of 0.041 mm 3 . The developed composite SLIPSs could find wide applications in effective corrosion and wear protection of Mg alloys in industry.

Abstract:Slippery liquid infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have been receiving increased attention. Fluorinated compounds have been used to prepare the SLIPS, but because of bioaccumulation and ecological impact of perfluoalkyl building blocks, fluorine‐free SLIPS system is preferable for practical applications. In this study, SLIPS has been prepared from hierarchically porous aluminum substrate, tetradecylphosphonic acid monolayer coating and silicone lubricant oil. The several properties of the SLIPS, including durability against lubricant loss, ice adhesion and corrosion resistance, have been compared with those with a fluoroalkyl monolayer coating and a fluorinated lubricant oil. Findings in this study demonstrate that the fluorine‐free SLIPS shows higher durability against the removal of lubricant in air and also in water. Both fluorinated and fluorine‐free SLIPS samples exhibit extremely reduced ice adhesion compared with superhydrophobic surfaces obtained using the same hierarchically porous aluminum substrate with fluorinated or fluorine‐free monolayer coating. The SLIPS samples have very high corrosion resistance in NaCl solution, but not in alkaline solution. Abstract:Marine corrosion and biofouling are the biggest challenges to the security of marine engineering equipment and offshore structures. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), emerging bio-inspired surfaces which have attracted widespread research interest over the past few years, have great potential in corrosion protection and biofouling prevention. It is valuable to summarize the most recent progress as well as to frame further opportunities in this field. In the current review, we have outlined the state-of-the-art fabrication strategies and applications of SLIPSs in anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings. Both lubricant-infused structured surfaces and oil-impregnated gels are discussed and compared in the fundamental section, and in the following sections their protection principles and performance in corrosion protection and biofouling prevention are presented separately. Finally, some critical unsolved challenges, as well as the research foci in the future, are proposed in the perspective section.
A substrate-friendly, sepiolite-based porous surface infused with slippery liquid with outstanding liquid repellency and metal corrosion resistance

Abstract:Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have considerable potential in metal corrosion prevention due to their excellent water repellency. The complex fabrication process, poor mechanical stability, and being limited by specific substrates restrict the large-scale development of SLIPS. Here, a pre-oil-infused superhydrophobic coating (SC) for SLIPS was created through careful planning of chemical interactions and micro-nano structures. It is mechanically strong and easy to prepare. Sepiolite with a natural porous structure was chosen as the raw material, bypassing the laborious pore-making process used in traditional SLIPS manufacture. Then, by infusing silicone oil into robust SC, a sturdy SLIPS was successfully created, which allowed a variety of droplets to slide smoothly at low sliding angles (3° ~ 6°) without leaving traces, exhibiting outstanding liquid repellency to some complex droplets and organic liquids. Due to the replacement of air pockets in superhydrophobic coating by silicone oil, the corrosion current density of SLIPS (2.431 × 10−7 A·cm−2) is nearly 2 orders of magnitude and 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of SC and bare Mg substrates, respectively. Thus, SLIPS indicated excellent anti-corrosion ability and longer-term stability than SC after exposure to 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. This substrate-friendly coating without damaging the substrate can be used to protect a wide variety of metallic materials, independent of specific substrates. This facile method provides guidance for the large-scale fabrication of robust smooth surfaces for expanded applications.

Abstract:Enlightened by anti-wetting living creature surfaces in nature, the superhydrophobic surface (SHS) and slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) have been constructed on metal materials for solving engineering problems. In this research, we design a switchable surface between the SHS and SLIPS on Mg alloy to improve corrosion resistance and provide different water-repellent properties. The SHS and SLIPS are fabricated based on a laser-ablated 2O3@Fe2O3 coating (PAFC). After laser processing, the irradiated PAFC consists of micro/nanostructured texture resulting in excellent superhydrophobicity. The SLIPS is fabricated by filling the lubricant into the laser-structured texture of the SHS. Then, the surface can be easily switched between the SHS and SLIPS by alcohol washing and lubricant-infusion. The non-irradiated PAFC acts as a superior and durable corrosion barrier. Notably, the switchable surface exhibits an excellent anti-corrosion ability (with large impedance modulus at 10−2 Hz about 1011 Ω cm2) in both surface states, which does not have any degradation after being immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution for 60 days. The SHS and SLIPS have durable air and lubricant layers, respectively, repelling the corrosive species during the immersion test. Simultaneously, the SHS and SLIPS can delay corrosion at an artificial defect area. The SLIPS performs better in the above abilities than the SHS owing to the lubricant layer's stability and self-healing property. The SHS with droplet rolling mode has better droplet transportability, water shielding ability, and self-cleaning ability than those of the SLIPS with droplet sliding mode in dealing with dynamic droplets. Meaningfully, the surface with switchable wettability exhibits long-term corrosion protection and promises a wide range of application prospects of metals such as anti-icing, drag reduction, anti-fouling, etc.

Abstract:Biomimetic slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) are developed as a potential alternative to superhydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) to resolve the issues of poor durability in corrosion protection and susceptibility to frosting. Herein, we fabricated a double-layered SLIPS coating on the AZ31 Mg alloy for corrosion protection and anti-icing application. The porous top layer was infused by lubricant, and the compact underlayer was utilized as a corrosion barrier. The water-repellent SLIPS coating exhibits a small sliding angle and durable corrosion resistance compared with the SHS coating. Moreover, the SLIPS coating delivers durable anti-icing performance for the Mg alloy substrate, which is obviously superior to the SHS coating. Multiple barriers in the SLIPS coating, including the infused water-repellent lubricant, the self-assembled monolayers coated porous top layer, and the compact layered double hydroxide-carbonate composite underlayer, are suggested as being responsible for the enhanced corrosion resistance and anti-icing performance. The robust double-layered SLIPS coating should be of great importance to expanding the potential applications of light metals and their alloys.
