Abstract:Purpose Metal plates are usually used as protective shields of engineering structures, which probably undergo multiple projectile impacts resulting from gunshot and blast. Though a large number of studies have been conducted on the performance of metal plates under a single projectile impact, few studies have explored their performance under multiple projectile impacts. This paper aims to explore the performance of Weldox 460 E steel plates against multiple projectile impacts through numerical simulation. Design/methodology/approach A three-dimensional coupled finite element (FE) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model was developed to simulate the perforation of a 12-mm-thick Weldox 460 E steel plate by an ogival projectile. The model was verified by existing experimental data. Then, it was extended to investigate the same target plate subjected to impacts with multiple projectiles. Simultaneous impacts with different number of projectiles, as well as sequential impacts with two projectiles, were considered. Findings Effects of spacing between projectiles on residual velocity of projectile, ballistic limit and failure mode of target were revealed for simultaneous impacts. Effects of spacing and axial distance between projectiles on residual velocity of projectile were explored for sequential impacts. Originality/value This work developed an advanced FE–SPH model to simulate perforation of steel plates by multiple projectiles, and revealed the effects of multiple impacts on ballistic performance of steel plates. It provides guidance for the design of protective structures/shields in various engineering applications.

Abstract:To predict the anti-penetration performance of protective structures, the ballistic performance of sandwich plates with steel face-sheet and aluminum foam core, the quasi-static compressive experiments of four different aluminum foam are performed and analyzed. The failure mechanism, mechanical parameters, and modified constitutive model are obtained. The virtual tests using numerical simulation were carried out in different penetration velocities based on quasi-static experimental constitutive parameters. Influence of projectile shape, face-sheet thickness, core thickness, and core densities on the residual velocity and plastic deformation of sandwich plates are discussed, while typical penetration failure modes and deformation mechanism are presented and analyzed. The failure modes of sandwich plates are different for hemisphere- and blunted-nosed projectile and the projectile shape influence is significant for ballistic performance when the penetration velocity approaches ballistic limit. The ballistic limit increases with increase of face-sheet or core thickness, core density and which shows an approximate linear relationship.

Abstract:Laminated composites with a nacreous shell structure can be designed with a high strength but light weight, ideal for protective shields. This work prepared TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite plates by stacking TC4 plates and Al plates with a thickness of 0.5 mm through vacuum multi-pass hot rolling and heat treatment. Their damage morphology and mechanisms, energy absorption capacity, and internal stress distribution were examined through ballistic test and numerical simulations. It is found that the ballistic limit velocity of the TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite is about 486 m/s. After penetration, only craters are formed in the sample without the presentation of fragments, exhibiting excellent performance against multiple projectiles. The failure of TC4-Al3Ti laminated composites is dominated by the petal-like damage, i.e., interlayer cracking. Meanwhile, the TC4 layer absorbs energy through plastic deformation, while the Al3Ti layer breaks and produces cracks. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the damage behavior of the TC4-Al3Ti laminated composite under impact, which could benefit their engineering applications.

Abstract:Two-layered structures, especially the metal/ceramic structure, have proved to have far better ballistic performance than a single-layered one. In this paper, a theoretical framework and numerical scheme, based on the combination of a mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory, micromechanics of composite model, the Johnson–Cook failure model, and the extended Drucker–Prager plasticity model, are set up to investigate a two-layered structure of nanostructured (NS) metal and ceramic. This study focuses on the different roles the two layers play during the protection process and clarifies the intrinsic significance of the ceramic layer and the metal layer according to different criteria of structural design. It is found that, in cases of targets with the same total thickness, the function of wearing and slowing down the projectile is mainly realized by the NS metal layer, while in cases of targets with a constant areal density, the function of wearing the projectile is mainly realized by the ceramic layer. Our simulations also show that, under the same impact velocity, the resistance of the target composed of the NS metal and ceramic laminates is remarkably stronger than that composed of coarse-grained metal and ceramic laminates.

Abstract:The anti-penetration performance of the composite armor structures, which are composed of steel, Kevlar composite, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite, were investigated numerically. The effects of composite armor configurations, the thickness of back plates, the shapes and incident angles of projectile on the anti-penetration performance were analyzed. The results indicate that the configuration with steel, Kevlar and UHMWPE on the first, second and third layers of the composite armor have the better anti-penetration performance. As the thickness of the composites back plate increases, the specific energy absorption of the composite armor decreases while the anti-penetration performance of the composite armor increases. In addition, it can be also found that the ball-headed projectile has stronger penetration ability than the flat-headed projectile of the same weight, and the penetration ability of projectile decreases with the increase in the impact angle of projectile.

Abstract:Penetration models and calculating algorithms are presented, describing the dynamics and fracture of composite armor shields penetrated by high-speed small arms. A shield considered consists of hard (metal or ceramic) facing and multilayered fabric backing. A simple formula is proved for the projectile residual velocity after perforation of a thin facing. A new plastic-flow jet model is proposed for calculating penetration dynamics in the case of a thick facing of ceramic or metal-ceramic FGM materials. By bringing together the developed models into a calculating algorithm, a computer tool is designed enabling simulations of penetration processes in the above-mentioned shields and analysis of optimization problems. Some results of computer simulation are presented. It is revealed in particular that strength proof of pliable backing can be better as compared with more rigid backing. Comparison of calculations and test data shows sufficient applicability of the models and the tool.

Abstract:A composite material with a laminated structure can be fabricated through layer-by-layer stacking of ceramic and metal in a certain order. It has characteristics of high strength, high hardness, low density of ceramics, and strong ductility of metals; thus, it can be used for bulletproof armor materials. During bullet antipenetration, the ceramic panel is responsible for decelerating and breaking the projectile, and the metal backplate absorbs the kinetic energy of the bullet through plastic deformation, thereby forming a complete bulletproof armor system. However, there are some problems associated with laminated materials, such as the significant difference between the properties of ceramic and metal, weak interface bonding strength, and easy occurrence of tip cracks due to the increase in the internal stress of the impacted material. The ceramic-metal interface easily leads to a sudden change in material properties, and crack propagation and migration affect the properties. After being impacted, cracks first appear in the interlayer, where the interface bonding strength is still unideal, easily leading to a drop between the ceramic panel and metal backplate. In this study, the preparation and observation of interface structure, phase-field simulation of interface fracture, finite element simulation of interface impact resistance, meshless smoothed-particle hydrodynamic method for high-velocity impact and large deformation, and first-principles calculations of interface strength were reviewed. Finally, some suggestions are presented for future development: (1) Strengthening the research of ceramic toughening to enhance the matching degree between the ceramic panel and metal backplate, reducing the sudden change of ceramic to metal performance, and making the performance of ceramic-metal laminated materials more uniform is crucial. In addition, studying metal strengthening is necessary. On the premise of not damaging metal ductility, nano-phases can be added to prepare metal matrix composites for metal strengthening; (2) More multiscale research methods, such as phase-field method, finite element analysis, and first-principles calculations are needed, especially focusing on how to organically and effectively combine these methods. The complementary coupling of multiscale experimental research and computational simulation methods is a powerful tool for the interface design of ceramic-metal laminated materials in the future.

Abstract:Civil and military ballistic protection systems often consist of thin, high-strength steel plates. Such plates may either be monolithic or layered with or without spacing. The idea of using layered plates instead of a monolithic one in order to increase the ballistic perforation resistance is not new, and the effect of using targets made up of several thinner plates has been investigated in the literature for a long time. However, results by various authors are contradicting and detailed experimental and numerical work is still required.In the present study, the ballistic perforation resistance of double-layered steel plates impacted by blunt and ogival projectiles was investigated both experimentally and numerically. In the tests, 12mm thick (monolithic or layered) targets of Weldox 700 E were impacted using a gas-gun at sub-ordnance velocity, and the ballistic limit velocity of the different target combinations was obtained. In general, good agreement was obtained between the numerical simulations and the experimental results. It was found that in the case of blunt projectiles a large gain in the ballistic limit is offered by double-layered systems. These advantages seem to disappear when ogival projectiles are used. However, the main conclusion from both the experimental and numerical studies is that the overall protection level, i.e. the minimum ballistic limit velocity obtained independently of projectile nose shape, seems to increase significantly by double-layering the target.

Abstract:This paper presents the computational-based ballistic limit of laminated metal panels comprised of high strength steel and aluminium alloy Al7075-T6 plate at different thickness combinations to necessitate the weight reduction of existing armour steel plate. The numerical models of monolithic configuration, double-layered configuration and triple-layered configuration were developed using a commercial explicit finite element code and were impacted by 7.62 mm armour piercing projectile at velocity range of 900 to 950 m/s. The ballistic performance of each configuration plate in terms of ballistic limit velocity, penetration process and permanent deformation was quantified and considered. It was found that the monolithic panel of high-strength steel has the best ballistic performance among all panels, yet it has not caused any weight reduction in existing armour plate. As the weight reduction was increased from 20-30%, the double-layered configuration panels became less resistance to ballistic impact where only at 20% and 23.2% of weight reduction panel could stop the 950m/s projectile. The triple-layered configuration panels with similar areal density performed much better where all panels subjected to 20-30% weight reductions successfully stopped the 950 m/s projectile. Thus, triple-layered configurations are interesting option in designing a protective structure without sacrificing the performance in achieving weight reduction.

Abstract:Armor steel is widely used for ballistic resistance in military infrastructures and vehicles. However, the high areal density of monolithic steel plates presents challenges in balancing protection and maneuverability. This study focuses on a novel armor design, invented by the authors: An N-shaped perforated armor plate (NPAP). The NPAP consists of a perforated plate, an inclined plate, and a back plate. A validated finite element (FE) model was used to analyze the dynamic damage behavior of the NPAP target and projectile under ballistic impact. Numerical simulation revealed that the NPAP target combined the edge and obliquity effects, resulting in asymmetric interaction and causing yaw and fracture of the projectile. The kinetic energy of the steel core after penetrating the NPAP target decreased by 84.7–88.0% compared to the initial kinetic energy. The NPAP target showed a 20.7–43.9% lower residual depth of penetration (RDOP) compared to the monolithic target. Furthermore, the effects of the dip angle of the inclined plate and plate thickness configurations on the ballistic performance of NPAP were examined. The results indicated that the NPAP target's ballistic performance is more susceptible to the impact location on the perforated plate with a larger dip angle of the inclined plate. Additionally, the NPAP target with a thin perforated plate and a thick back plate configuration exhibited better ballistic performance, given the constant thickness of the inclined plate.

Abstract:The widespread use of 2024-T351 and 7075-T651 aluminum alloys in protective engineering highlights the critical need for investigation of their ballistic resistance. In this study, the ballistic resistance of monolithic 7075-T651 and 2024-T351 aluminum alloy targets and heterogeneous double-layered 2024 + 7075 and 7075 + 2024 aluminum alloy targets struck by blunt projectiles was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Ballistic impact tests of these targets were carried out using a one-stage gas gun, and the initial versus residual velocities data sets were determined experimentally. It was found that the monolithic aluminum alloy targets, 2024-T351 and 7075-T651, were perforated by blunt projectiles through a combination of shear plugging and membrane stretching failure mechanisms. The double-layered targets, composed of 7075-T651 at the front and 2024-T351 at the rear, exhibited a 7.3% higher ballistic limit velocity than the reversed configuration. In parallel with the experiments, numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit. The behavior of both 2024-T351 and 7075-T651 aluminum alloy targets was described using plasticity models complemented by fracture criteria. Specifically, the 2024-T351 targets were modeled using a modified Johnson–Cook plasticity model, paired with either the Lode-dependent modified Mohr–Coulomb fracture criterion or the Lode-independent modified Johnson–Cook fracture criterion. In contrast, the 7075-T651 targets were modeled using a Johnson–Cook plasticity model, accompanied by either the Lode-dependent Wen–Mahmoud fracture criterion or the Lode-independent Johnson–Cook fracture criterion. Numerical simulations showed that the incorporation of the normalized Lode angle into fracture criteria enhanced the accuracy of ballistic limit velocity and failure pattern predictions for both monolithic and double-layered targets. The main objective of the study was to reveal the necessity of incorporation the normalized Lode angle into a fracture criterion to provide better prediction of ballistic resistance of heterogeneous aluminum alloy double-layered targets with various configurations struck by blunt projectiles through finite element simulations.

Abstract:This paper presents the possibility of using additional ballistic shields based on composite materials, which are applied to the body of a passenger car. A ballistic laminate made of Twaron T 750 aramid fabric with 5 mm thick and 2 mm thick magnetic foil was used. In the first stage, the mechanical parameters of the tested ballistic laminate system were determined in tensile tests. In field tests, the considered system was analyzed in terms of impact with a 9 × 19 mm FMJ Parabellum projectile, and then the results were numerically verified. The work was focused on the validation of numerical models. The appropriate correlation level of the numerical results was obtained with the fit, which was estimated at approximately 7%; furthermore, the results prove the correctness of this study's research methodology.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. In this research, a multi-layered composite armor was introduced by combining ceramics, fiber-reinforced composite and metal alloy with the aim of making the armor capable of resisting ballistic impact. A model was developed in ABAQUS/Explicit to predict the impact performance of armor in different scenarios. A thinner version of the proposed structure was manufactured, and experiments were conducted. Data were collected and analyzed including initial and residual velocity and absorbed kinetic energy. The experiments and simulations showed similarities in how the materials response to the ballistic impact. It was found that the thickness of each component contributes to the total ballistic resistance of the whole structure. By putting 20 mm thick Boron carbide layer in front layer, armor structure can absorb more kinetic energy than having 10 mm thick Boron carbide front layer. The sequence order of layers also affected the protection of armor structure. If the front layer is Kevlar/epoxy, armor structure cannot withstand multi-hit attacks because of significant delamination in these layers. Also, the Boron carbide core that had Kevlar/epoxy layer in the front was more shattered than the Boron carbide front layer that had Kevlar/epoxy as the core layer. By applying cohesive layers between Kevlar/epoxy layers, the displacement of fibers in the bonded composite layers was equal to 68% of the displacement of fibers in the unbonded Kevlar/epoxy layers. Also, the multi-layer structure with bonded Kevlar/epoxy layers exerted more stress on projectile after impact compared to structure with unbonded Kevlar/epoxy layers.

Abstract:Basalt and Kevlar materials are high-performance reinforcements used in armor systems. The present work presented that the combination of natural fiber (basalt) with synthetic fiber (Kevlar) and alumina tile composites improves ballistic performance. The partial replacement of basalt encourages the use of natural reinforcement for the development of eco-friendly armor. Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) based modeling is used with a high strain rate and implemented based on Yen's criteria. Cohesive elements are used at inter-layers for modeling the damage evolution. The damage initiation and propagation model is created and implemented as a user-defined subroutine in the ABAQUS finite element (FE) code (VUMAT). Parametric studies are performed by varying the stacking sequence of Kevlar 3D (K3D) and basalt 3D (B3D) layers and the best stacking is used with ceramic (alumina) material. The optimum stacking sequence of composite laminate thickness is investigated to design the light weight body armour and the better results are used to reduce the thickness of the panel, which is the key factor to design any armor panel. Results revealed the panels with basalt composite (B16) impacting with FSP impactor and alumina/Kevlar/basalt composite (C1K7B8) impacting with 9 mm FMJ impactor improved the ballistic performance as compared to H16, K8H8 and K8B8 stacking sequences.

Abstract:The research aims to investigate the impact resistance of steel-aluminum laminated target plates, which is crucial for the design of high-performance anti-invasion structures. Previous studies have presented conflicting views on the protective performance of steel-aluminum laminated target plates, highlighting the need to clarify the influence of structural parameters on their protection capabilities. To address this, two groups of steel and aluminum plates with similar strengths and large differences in strengths were selected and tested. The ballistic limits characteristics of these double-layered plates were analyzed under different projectile nose shapes. Additionally, a 3D finite element model was established using ABAQUS/Explicit software, after the validity of the model was verified, the influence of the arrangement order of the steel and aluminum on the impact resistance was numerically simulated. The results show that the strength of the steel and aluminum plate materials is the key factor influencing the order of the best impact resistance of the target plate, and the shape of the projectile's nose and the thickness of the target plate don't have much influence on the order of the best impact resistance, which is also proved by the simulation results of the isoplanar density (same surface density). This study is instructive for the design and application of steel-aluminum laminated target plate structures with protective ends.

Abstract:In this paper, the ballistic behavior of single, double-, three-, four- and six-layered plates impacted by hemispherical-nosed projectiles were experimentally investigated. Ballistic limit velocity for each multi-layered target was obtained based on the investigation of the effect of the air gap between layers, the number, order and thickness of layers on the ballistic resistance. The results showed that the monolithic thin targets presented more effective than multi-layered targets when the dominant response of monolithic targets were dishing and bulging which involved bending and stretching, and the ballistic limit velocities of multi-layered plates increased with the increase of the number of layers, although the multi-layered targets were less effective than monolithic targets. However, the monolithic targets had lower ballistic resistance than multi-layered targets if the total thickness above a specific value, the dominant target response changed from shearing to bulging and dishing when using multi-layered targets instead of monolithic targets. Moreover, the air gap decreased the ballistic resistance of multi-layered targets, but the air gap size had slight influence on the ballistic resistance. The order of layers affected the ballistic resistance of multi-layered targets, the multi-layered targets of two equal thick plates had the highest ballistic resistance followed by multi-layered targets of a thicker front plate and a thinner back plate, multi-layered targets of a thinner front plate and a thicker back plate.

Abstract:Multi-layer fabrics are commonly used in ballistics shields with a lower bulletproof class to protect against pistol and revolver bullets. In order to additionally limit the dynamic deflection of the samples, layers reinforced with additional materials, including non-Newtonian fluids compacted by shear, are additionally used. Performing a wide range of tests in each case can be very problematic; therefore, there are many calculation methods that allow, with better or worse results, mapping of the behavior of the material in the case of impact loads. The search for simplified methods is very important in order to simplify the complexity of numerical fabric models while maintaining the accuracy of the results obtained. In this article, multi-layer composites were tested. Two samples were included in the elements subjected to shelling. In the first sample, the outer layers consisted of aramid fabrics in a laminate with a thermoplastic polymer matrix. The middle layer contained a non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid enclosed in hexagonal (honeycomb) cells. The fluid was produced using polypropylene glycol and colloidal silica powder with a diameter of 14 µm in the proportions of 60/40. The backing plate was made using a 12-layer composite made of Twaron® para-aramid fabrics with a DCPD matrix-not yet used in a wide range of ballistics. Then, numerical simulations were carried out in the Abaqus/Explicit dynamic analysis. The Johnson-Cook constitutive strength model was used to describe the behavior of elastic-plastic materials constituting the elements of the projectiles. For the non-Newtonian fluid, a Up-Us EOS was used. The inner layers of the fabric were treated as an orthotropic material. Complete homogenization of the sample layers was carried out, thanks to which each layer was treated as a homogeneous continuum. As a parameter of fracture mechanics for shield components, the strain criterion was used with the smooth particles hydrodynamics method (SPH). Then, the results of simulations were compared with the results of the ballistic test for both samples placed next to each other, which resulted in the formation of a multi-layer composite in one ballistic test subjected to impact loads during firing with a 9 × 19 mm Parabellum FMJ projectile with an initial velocity of 370 ± 10 m/s. The results of numerical tests are very similar to the ballistic tests, which indicates the correct mapping of the process and the correct conduct of layer homogenization. The applied proportions of the components in the non-Newtonian fluid allowed a reduction in the deflection compared to previous studies. Additionally, the proposal to use a DCPD matrix allowed to obtain a much lower deflection value compared to other materials, which is a novelty in the field of production of ballistic shields.

Abstract:A novel multi-layered composite armor system is proposed for ballistic protection in the present study. The composite armor is composed of a ductile metal front, followed by a ceramic/UHMWPE laminate composite as the intermediate layer, and a ductile metal back layer. The ballistic performance of the composite armor against flat-nosed projectile was investigated experimentally and numerically. Experimental results show that the proposed composite armor exhibited several failure modes, including ductile hole enlargement of metallic face sheets, fragmentations and cracks of the ceramic layer, delamination, fiber fracture and bulge deformation of UHMWPE laminates. Three-dimensional numerical model was established to analyze the evolution of the whole ballistic response, and to discuss the effect of the ceramic layer placement and the mass allocation between the ceramic layer and UHMWPE laminate layer on the ballistic performance. Simulation results reveal the evident reduction in residual velocity that results from the optimal placement of the ceramic layer. Good balance among the contributions of the target components can be achieved to maximize the total energy absorption of composite armor by optimizing the ceramic placement strategy. The projectile residual velocity and the total energy absorption are insensitive to the mass ratio of ceramic layer to UHMWPE laminate layer within a certain range. Under the condition of a higher mass ratio, the specific energy absorption of UHMWPE layer can be significantly improved due to the full development of its bulging deformation. Consequently, it would benefit the energy absorption capability of the composite armor.

Abstract:In this paper, the ballistic performance of double-layered steel plates of different materials impacted by blunt- and ogival-nosed projectiles is experimentally investigated by a gas gun. The ballistic limit velocity for each configuration is obtained and compared on the investigation of the effect of the order of layers and the nose shape of projectiles on the ballistic resistance of targets. The experimental results showed that the ballistic limit velocities are higher for the double-layered plates of the upper layer of high strength and low ductility material and the lower layer of low strength and high ductility material than the configuration of the opposite layering order. Moreover, the ballistic limit velocities of ogival-nosed projectiles are significantly smaller than those of blunt-nosed projectiles. Furthermore, the keep integrity ability of ogival-projectiles is obvious stronger than that of blunt-nosed projectiles, and also the blunt-nosed projectiles lose some mass and their length shorten, but the loss of mass and length of ogival-nosed projectiles are tiny that can be neglected. The differences in the ballistic limit velocities between various impact conditions can be related to the transitions of perforation mechanisms and failure models of plates and projectiles.

Abstract:The ballistic performance of protective structures under multiple projectile impacts attracts increasing attention due to its practical importance, and existing studies were seldomly devoted to exploring how the structure would deform and fail when subjected to such loads. This study aimed to characterize the multi-hit ballistic resistance of fully-clamped thin plates made of 304 stainless steel using finite element method, with the equivalent plastic strain employed to define material damage and failure/fracture. The numerical model was validated against existing experimental results of double impacts at the same location, with good agreement achieved. The model was subsequently employed to quantify the effects of impact position, interval time between successive hits, projectile nose shape (e.g., spherical, flat, and conical), and boundary condition of target plate on ballistic limit and deformation/failure modes. Further, ballistic limit boundaries were constructed for both double and triple impacts of projectiles. Obtained results are helpful for designing high-performance protective structures against multiple projectile impacts.
