Abstract:Real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) and accurate diagnosis of imminent damage are critical to ensure the structural safety of conventional reinforced concrete (RC) and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) structures. Implementations of a piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensor network in the critical areas of structural members can identify the damage level. This study uses a recently developed PZT-enabled Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI)-based, real-time, wireless, and portable SHM and damage detection system in prismatic specimens subjected to flexural repeated loading plain concrete (PC) and FRC. Furthermore, this research examined the efficacy of the proposed SHM methodology for FRC cracking identification of the specimens at various loading levels with different sensor layouts. Additionally, damage quantification using values of statistical damage indices is included. For this reason, the well-known conventional static metric of the Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) and the Mean Absolute Percentage Deviation (MAPD) were used and compared. This paper addresses a reliable monitoring experimental methodology in FRC to diagnose damage and predict the forthcoming flexural failure at early damage stages, such as at the onset of cracking. Test results indicated that damage assessment is successfully achieved using RMSD and MAPD indices of a strategically placed network of PZT sensors. Furthermore, the Upper Control Limit (UCL) index was adopted as a threshold for further sifting the scalar damage indices. Additionally, the proposed PZT-enable SHM method for prompt damage level is first established, providing the relationship between the voltage frequency response of the 32 PZT sensors and the crack propagation of the FRC prisms due to the step-by-step increased imposed load. In conclusion, damage diagnosis through continuous monitoring of PZTs responses of FRC due to flexural loading is a quantitative, reliable, and promising application.

Abstract:Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) has shown significant promise in enhancing the safety and reliability of civil infrastructures. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has recently become essential due to the increasing demand for the safety and sustainability of civil infrastructures. Thus, SHM provides critical benefits for future research to develop more advanced monitoring systems that effectively detect and diagnose the damage in FRC structures. This study investigates the potential of an Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI) based SHM system for detecting cracks in FRC prisms subjected to four-point repeated loading. For the needs of this research, an experimental investigation of three FRC specimens with the dimensions 150 × 150 × 450 (mm) were subjected to three different loading levels where no visual cracks formed on their surface. Next, prisms were subjected to reloading until they depleted their load-carrying capacity, resulting in pure bending fracture at the mid-span. A network of nine cement paste coated Piezoelectric lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducers have been epoxy bonded to the surface of the FRC prisms, and their frequency signal measurements were utilized for quantitative damage assessment. The observed changes in the frequency response of each PZT sensor are evaluated as solid indications of potential damage presence, and the increasing trend connotes the severity of the damage. The well-known conventional static metric of the Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) was successfully used to quantify and evaluate the cracking in FRC specimens while improving the efficiency and accuracy of damage detection. Similarly, the dynamic metric of a new statistical index called “moving Root Mean Square Deviation” (mRMSD) was satisfactorily used and compared to achieve and enhance accuracy in the damage evaluation process.

Abstract:Abstract Damage detection at early cracking stages in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams, before further deterioration and their inevitable brittle shear failure is crucial for structural safety and integrity. The effectiveness of a structural health monitoring technique using the admittance measurements of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a reinforced concrete beam without shear reinforcement is experimentally investigated. Embedded “smart aggregate” transducers and externally bonded piezoelectric patches have been placed in arrays at both shear spans of the beam. Beam were tested till total shear failure and monitored at three different states; healthy, flexural cracking and diagonal cracking. Test results showed that transducers close to the critical diagonal crack provided sound and graduated discrepancies between the admittance responses at the healthy state and thedamage levels.Damage assessment using statistical indices calculated from the measurements of all transducers was also attempted. Rational changes of the index values were obtained with respect to the increase of the damage. Admittance responses and index values of the transducers located on the shear span where the critical diagonal crack formed provided cogent evidence of damage. On the contrary, negligible indication of damage was yielded by the responses of the transducers located on the other shear span, where no diagonal cracking occurred.

Abstract:Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) is well known for its rapid shoot growth. Auxin exerts pleiotropic effects on plant growth. The small auxin-up RNA (SAUR) genes are early auxin-responsive genes involved in plant growth. In total, 38 SAUR genes were identified in P. edulis (PheSAUR). A comprehensive overview of the PheSAUR gene family is presented, including the gene structures, phylogeny, and subcellular location predictions. A transcriptome analysis indicated that 37 (except PheSAUR18) of the PheSAUR genes were expressed during shoot growth process and that the PheSAUR genes were differentially expressed. Furthermore, quantitative real-time PCR analysis indicated that all of the PheSAUR genes could be induced in different tissues of seedlings and that 37 (except PheSAUR41) of the PheSAUR genes were up-regulated after indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) treatment. These results reveal a comprehensive overview of the PheSAUR gene family and may pave the way for deciphering their functions during bamboo development.

Abstract:This paper presents a feasibility study for practical applications of an impedance-based real-time health monitoring technique applying PZT (Lead–Zirconate–Titanate) patches to concrete structures. First, comparison between experimental and analytical studies for damage detection on a plain concrete beam is made. In the experimental study, progressive surface damage inflicted artificially on the plain concrete beam is assessed by using both lateral and thickness modes of the PZT patches. Then, an analytical study based on finite element (FE) models is carried out to verify the validity of the experimental result. Secondly, multiple (shear and flexural) cracks incurred in a reinforced concrete (RC) beam under a third point bending test are monitored continuously by using a sensor array system composed of the PZT patches. In this study, a root mean square deviation (RMSD) in the impedance signatures of the PZT patches is used as a damage indicator.

Abstract:High-frequency structural analysis so far has been a major issue in dynamic analysis, for which many conventional methods such as finite element method and transfer matrix method are unable to perform well. Since the electromechanical impedance technique for structural health monitoring (SHM) operates at very high frequencies, the reverberation matrix method (RMM), which was just developed a few years ago, is employed to study dynamics of the monitored structures, which are bonded with piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches. A piecewisely homogeneous Euler-Bernoulli beam model is introduced to approximate the non-homogeneous beam and only one-dimensional axial vibration of PZT wafers is considered. The imperfect interfacial bonding between PZT patches and the host beam is investigated based on a shear lag model. Using a hybrid technique combining electromechanical impedance method and RMM, an analytical expression of impedance (or admittance) related to the response of the coupled model of PZT patch-bonding layer-host beam system is derived for SHM. The proposed method is examined by comparing with other theoretical methods as well as by means of a test on an intelligent system using a steel beam with two symmetrically installed PZT wafers. It could be further applied to predicting the dynamics of monitored Timoshenko beams, continuous beams, and framed structures as well. Copyright (C) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Cracking Behavior of Cfrp Laminate-Strengthened Rc Beams with Premechanical and Postmechanical Environmental Damage

Abstract:The main objectives of this study are to investigate the effects of three types of predamage and postdamage on the cracking behaviors of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-strengthened reinforced concrete RC beams and to develop a rational methodology for predicting the average stabilized crack spacing. The predamage is induced by either sustained loading only or by the combination of sustained loading and corrosion. The predamage involved a sustained loading with an anchor tightening system, an electrochemical process to accelerate the migration of chlorides from an external electrolyte into the tested beams, and a wetting-drying cycle process with a controlled current to accelerate the corrosion of the reinforcing steel bars in the tested beams. The postdamage was induced by wetting-drying cycles. A loading test was conducted to determine the cracking behaviors of stabilized flexural cracks in the CFRP-strengthened beams with or without damage. The crack patterns, crack spacings, and test beam widths were recorded and compared, and the related mechanism was discussed. It was found that after CFRP strengthening, the effect of predamage or postdamage on the crack spacing and width is not as distinct as in the unstrengthened cases. The sustained loading predamaged beam showed insignificant differences in crack spacing and width compared to beams without predamage. Subsequently, a model capable of evaluating the crack behaviors of CFRP-strengthened beams with or without damage was developed. The analytical approach is based on equilibrium and compatibility equations to elucidate the average stresses of concrete and the CFRP laminate of a CFRP-strengthened beam element. Fiber Reinforced Polymer Debonding Failure Identification Using Smart Materials in Strengthened T-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Beams

Abstract:The favorable contribution of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) sheets to the shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is widely acknowledged. Nonetheless, the premature debonding of EB-FRP materials remains a limitation for widespread on-site application. Once debonding appears, it is highly likely that brittle failure will occur in the strengthened RC structural member; therefore, it is essential to be alerted of the debonding incident immediately and to intervene. This may not be always possible, particularly if the EB-FRP strengthened RC member is located in an inaccessible area for fast inspection, such as bridge piers. The ability to identify debonding immediately via remote control would contribute to the safer application of the technique by eliminating the negative outcomes of debonding. The current investigation involves the detection of EB-FRP sheet debonding using a remotely controlled electromechanical admittance (EMA)-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system that utilizes piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensors. An experimental investigation on RC T-beams strengthened for shear with EB-FRP sheets has been performed. The PZT sensors are installed at various locations on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets to evaluate the SHM system's ability to detect debonding. Additionally, strain gauges were attached on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets near the PZT sensors to monitor the deformation of the FRP and draw useful conclusions through comparison of the results to the wave-based data provided by the PZT sensors. The experimental results indicate that although EB-FRP sheets increase the shear resistance of the RC T-beams, premature failure occurs due to sheet debonding. The applied SHM system can sufficiently identify the debonding in real-time and appears to be feasible for on-site applications.
Efficacy and Damage Diagnosis of Reinforced Concrete Columns and Joints Strengthened with FRP Ropes Using Piezoelectric Transducers

Abstract:Recent research has indicated that the implantation of a network of piezoelectric transducer patches in element regions of potential damage development, such as the beam-column joint (BCJ) area, substantially increases the efficacy and accuracy of the structural health monitoring (SHM) methods to identify damage level, providing a reliable diagnosis. The use of piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers for the examination of the efficiency of an innovative strengthening technique of reinforced concrete (RC) columns and BCJs is presented and commented on. Two real-scale RC BCJ subassemblages were constructed for this investigation. The columns and the joint panel of the second subassemblage were externally strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (C-FRP) ropes. To examine the efficiency of this strengthening technique we used the following transducers: (a) PZT sensors on the ropes and the concrete; (b) tSring linear variable displacement transducers (SLVDTs), diagonally installed on the BCJ, to measure the shear deformations of the BCJ panel; (c) Strain gauges on the internal steel bars. From the experimental results, it became apparent that the PZT transducers successfully diagnosed the loading step at which the primary damage occurred in the first BCJ subassemblage and the damage state of the strengthened BCJ during the loading procedure. Further, data acquired from the diagonal SLVDTs and the strain gauges provided insight into the damage state of the two tested specimens at each step of the loading procedure and confirmed the diagnosis provided by the PZT transducers. Furthermore, data acquired by the PZT transducers, SLVDTs and strain gauges proved the effectiveness of the applied strengthening technique with C-FRP ropes externally mounted on the column and the conjunction area of the examined BCJ subassemblages.
Damage Assessment Using The Energy Dissipation Ratio Of Acceleration Signals

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel damage identification method using the energy dissipation ratio (EDR) of acceleration signals. The efficiency of the method was verified by two numerical tests and a reinforced concrete beam experiment. One can obtain a consistent relationship between the EDR and the damage severity both in linear state and nonlinear state of the structure. In addition, the new method was compared with the means of modal-based damage identification utilizing Morlet Wavelet Transform. The results showed that mean EDR increased by 62.9% in linear state, while mean EDR decreased by 31.0% in nonlinear state when macrocracks were present; furthermore, EDR has more sensibility to damage severity than the natural frequency and damping ratio. Therefore, EDR is probably a promising global damage indicator in structural health monitoring which may be applicable to not only lightly damaged (in the linear elastic state) but also severely damaged systems (in the nonlinear plastic state) during the process of damage.

Abstract:As a qualitative health monitoring method, the electromechanical impedance technique ( EMI) has been widely studied. Due to the complexities of the damaged structures and the difficulties in high-frequency analysis, further information about the nature of damage cannot be obtained using EMI in its conventional non-model-based way. Thus, in this paper, a hybrid technology combining the EMI technique and reverberation matrix method (RMM) is proposed to quantitatively correlate damage in beam structures with high-frequency signatures for structural health monitoring. Timoshenko beam theory is employed to study the dynamics of beam-like structures bonded with multiple pairs of PZT patches. A piecewise, homogeneous beam model is introduced to approximate the nonhomogeneous beam in which inhomogeneity is introduced because damages of an originally uniform beam can be modeled by different cross-sectional properties. Here, only one-dimensional axial vibration of PZT wafers is considered. A shear lag model is adopted to simulate the interfacial bonding between PZT patches and the host beam. An analytical expression of impedance ( or admittance) related to the response of the coupled model of the PZT patch-bonding layer-host beam system is derived and then investigated by comparing with other theories. Finally, covariance, a kind of non-parametric damage index, is also employed to identify the damage severity, propagation and location.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper reports recent achievements of novel structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for damage diagnosis for critical members of civil, mechanical and aerospace structures using electro‐mechanical impedance sensors. The basic concept of this technique is to use simultaneously both high‐frequency structural excitations and responses employing piezoelectric sensors to monitor the local area of a structure for changes in structural impedance that would indicate imminent damage. In this paper, several principal software and hardware issues on these topics are described. A new impedance model is proposed that incorporates the effects of sensor and bonding defects for sensor self‐diagnosis. Temperature effects‐free impedance‐based damage detection algorithm using effective frequency shifts based on cross‐correlation coefficients is presented. In a sense of tailoring wireless sensing technology to the impedance methods, an active sensor node incorporating a miniaturized impedance sensing device, an on‐board microcontroller, and a radio frequency (RF) telemetry is introduced. A data compression algorithm is embedded into the on‐board chip of the active sensor node to enhance its local data processing‐capability. Finally, this paper concludes with a discussion of further studies and future applications.

Abstract:In the hogging moment regions of steel-concrete composite beams that have been widely used in bridges and buildings nowadays, the concrete slabs are vulnerable to cracks and the connection interfaces are subject to debonding. These damages could substantially reduce the stiffness, strength and durability of the beams. Comprehensive and quantitative structural health monitoring of steel-concrete composite beams is in great demand. To this end, a novel framework was developed in this study for damage location, quantification and characterization of steel-concrete composite beams using acoustic emission (AE) measurements. The damage-induced AE sources were located more accurately based on empirical wavelet transform (EWT), Akaike information criterion (AIC) and genetic algorithm (GA), where EWT and AIC together helped to determine the exact arrival times of AE waves in the presence of serious attenuation, reflection, scattering and dispersion of AE waves and high operational noise of the structure. With the coordinates of located AE events, the macrocrack and debonding surfaces were estimated by hybrid hierarchical-k-means clustering analysis. After that, the microcracking modes and orientations were diagnosed based on moment tensor analysis that made use of the coordinates of AE events and the P-wave first motions. Through the reversed four-point bending test of steel-concrete composite beams, the proposed framework was proved to be able to detect both concrete cracks and interface debondings. Multiple damages of different types could be accurately located and quantified. The dominant damage mechanism of cracks in the concrete slabs was found to be tensile-mode microcracking, and the interface debonding was also primarily caused by tensile stress-related vertical uplift.

Abstract:Monitoring flexural stiffness variations of cracked reinforced concrete (r/c) structures is one of the most challenging problems of the dynamics of these structures. In this article, the application of rotation rate sensors for structural health monitoring of reinforced concrete beams is proposed as an alternative SHM method to, e.g. those utilising more expensive and laborious fiber optics. This subject was investigated with progressively damaged 6 m long reinforced concrete beams. During each damage state, the cracks were located and described in detail. Experimental modal analyses were carried out. Translational and rotational vibration modes were acquired using translational accelerometers and rotation rate sensors. The stiffness distributions of the damaged reinforced concrete beams were identified from the modal properties using model-updating techniques. It is demonstrated that stiffness distributions calculated using rotational modes are more accurate than those obtained from the familiar translational natural modes of vibrations. Further improvement of stiffness identification of r/c beams from their vibrations was obtained by combining the directly measured rotational modes and their approximations from translational modes by the central difference method.

Abstract:Arrangements of piezoelectric transducers, such as PZT (lead zirconate titanate), have been widely used in numerous structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Usually, when two or more PZT transducers are placed close together, significant interference, namely crosstalk, appears. Such an effect is usually neglected in most SHM applications. However, it can potentially be used as a sensitive parameter to identify structural faults. Accordingly, this work proposes using the crosstalk effect in an arrangement of PZT transducers modeled as a multiconductor transmission line to detect structural damage. This effect is exploited by computing an impedance matrix representing a host structure with PZTs attached to it. The proposed method was assessed in an aluminum beam structure with two PZTs attached to it using finite element modeling in OnScale® software to simulate both healthy and damaged conditions. Similarly, experimental tests were also carried out. The results, when compared to those obtained using a traditional electromechanical impedance (EMI) method, prove that the new approach significantly improved the sensitivity of EMI-based technique in SHM applications.

Abstract:The electromechanical (EM) impedance technique using piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers for structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted considerable attention in various engineering fields. In the conventional EM impedance technique, the EM admittance of a PZT transducer is used as a damage indicator. Statistical analysis methods such as root mean square deviation (RMSD) have been employed to associate the damage level with the changes in the EM admittance signatures, but it is difficult to determine the location of damage using such methods. This paper proposes a new approach by dividing the large frequency (30-400 kHz) range into sub-frequency intervals and calculating their respective RMSD values. The RMSD of the sub-frequency intervals (RMSD-S) will be used to study the severity and location of damage. An experiment is carried out on a real size concrete structure subjected to artificial damage. It is observed that damage close to the PZT changes the high frequency range RMSD-S significantly, while the damage far away from the PZT changes the RMSD-S in the low frequency range significantly. The relationship between the frequency range and the PZT sensing region is also presented. Finally, a damage identification scheme is proposed to estimate the location and severity of damage in concrete structures.

To obtain an electro-mechanical impedance data at the piezoelectric sensors attached to a host structure, a wireless impedance sensor node that consists of a miniaturized impedance-measuring chip, a microprocessor, and a radio frequency (RF) telemetry is utilized. Furthermore, the autoregressive features extracted from a frequency-domain Auto-Regressive model with eXogenous (ARX) inputs on the electromechanical impedance measured at the piezoelectric sensors are used as nonlinear features to monitor early-stage fatigue crack's initiation and its growth that might be developed in the host structure subjected to a fatigue loading condition. The applicability of the proposed wireless SHM and nonlinear impedance methods is demonstrated throughout an experimental study using a simple test sample under a fatigue loading condition. Finally, this paper concludes with a discussion of further studies and future applications.

Abstract:Effective damage identification is paramount to evaluating safety conditions and preventing catastrophic failures of concrete structures. Although various methods have been introduced in the literature, developing robust and reliable structural health monitoring (SHM) procedures remains an open research challenge. This study proposes a new approach utilizing a 1-D convolution neural network to identify the formation of cracks from the raw electromechanical impedance (EMI) signature of externally bonded piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers. Externally bonded PZT transducers were used to determine the EMI signature of fiber-reinforced concrete specimens subjected to monotonous and repeatable compression loading. A leave-one-specimen-out cross-validation scenario was adopted for the proposed SHM approach for a stricter and more realistic validation procedure. The experimental study and the obtained results clearly demonstrate the capacity of the introduced approach to provide autonomous and reliable damage identification in a PZT-enabled SHM system, with a mean accuracy of 95.24% and a standard deviation of 5.64%.

Abstract:At the British Columbia Cancer Institute in Vancouver British Columbia 128 consecutive cone biopsies reviewed during a 2-month period in 1970 were evaluated for the presence of microglandular hyperplasia a comparatively less florid form of atypical endocervical hyperplasiz. 31 women had the pathology all of them premenopausal. The foci generally about 1-2 mm were situated in the endocervical canal and at the squamo-columnar junction. While 44% of the women who had used (combined) oral contraceptives had microglandular hyperplasia the nonuser incidence was 11% (1 woman had used a sequential contraceptive). Among women with a history of pill use about 50% showed a progestogen-induced atrophy while many of the other 1/2 had discontinued use or had only a short history of use. Microglandular hyperplasia is definitely associated with progestational agents or progesterone. It was seen that the glandular proliferation once initiated lasts for some time without exogenous progestogen support. No statistical connection between microglandular hyperplasia and squamous dyskaryosis or malignant change was seen.

Abstract:Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) offers several advantages compared to concrete, notably due to the strain hardening behavior under tensile actions. Structures made of this composite material are lightweight and highly durable, thanks to the UHPFRC waterproofing quality. Nonetheless, the tensile behavior leads to a different cracking pattern than conventional concrete that is not fully understood yet. This paper presents an innovative monitoring approach that combines passive acoustic emission and active ultrasonic stress wave to localize and quantify damage on a full-scale UHPFRC beam during the loading protocol. This monitoring technique involves 24 transducers that are embedded throughout a UHPFRC t-shape beam of 4.2 meters. Continuous monitoring using this unique passive and active approach enables accurate location events, such as micro-cracking within the beam. Moreover, this sensor network is able to determine the location of the macro-crack that is linked to the structural collapse just after the end of the elastic domain. This novel sensor network opens new possibilities to monitor the structural behavior and detect damage on UHPFRC structures before they affect the structural behavior in terms of deflection and strain.
