Abstract:The microscopic mechanism of the competitive adsorption of CH4, CO2 and N2 in coal is the theoretical basis for enhancing coal seam gas recovery by injecting CO2 (CO2-ECBM). Based on this principle, this work used Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics to investigate the microscopic adsorption mechanism of single, binary, and ternary component gases in Wiser bituminous coal molecules. The adsorption mechanism was explored by changing gas composition and concentration. The comparison of adsorption separation coefficients suggested that CO2 had the highest adsorption capacity, whereas N2 had the lowest capacity. When the CO2 concentration in the gas mixture was high, the adsorption amount was large and the adsorption separation coefficient was small. This finding indicated that high concentrations of CO2 had negative effects on competitive adsorption. Energy changes were also evaluated. The potential energy between CO2 and the framework was the strongest among the two other gases. The inhibition of CH4 adsorption intensified with decreasing molar fraction of CO2. This phenomenon was explained from the perspective of heat of adsorption. As the molar fraction of CO2 in the adsorption system decreased, the heat of the isotherm adsorption increased. Meanwhile, the adsorption system became unstable and the capacity of CH4 adsorption on the framework weakened. Results provide a theoretical basis for the use of CO2-ECBM.

Abstract:By conducting research on the microscopic mechanisms of CH4 and CO2 adsorption in different rank coals, the CO2-enhanced coal bed methane recovery (CO2-ECBM) technique can be further developed. In this paper, low-pressure N2 adsorption (LPGA-N2), low-pressure CO2 adsorption (LPGA-CO2), isothermal adsorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments, and molecular simulations were applied to analyze the mechanisms. The results demonstrated that the pore volume and specific surface area (SSA) of coal showed a U-shaped trend with the increase of metamorphic. The volume and SSA of the micropore were positively correlated with the ultimate adsorption volume, indicating that micropores were the main sites for adsorption. With the increased metamorphic degree, the aliphatic chains and oxygenated functional groups shed, and the aromatic rings polymerized. These changes in chemical functional groups directly affected the adsorption capacity of coal and indirectly affected the adsorption capacity by affecting micropore evolution. Compared with the CH4 molecule, the CO2 molecule had a smaller structure and a stronger intermolecular force, shown as the larger adsorption energy and closer distance to the coal molecule in the molecular simulation. These findings can provide the data and theoretical basis for the CO2-ECBM technique, coal bed methane extraction, and effect evaluation of extraction.

Abstract:To reveal the CO, CO2, and O2 adsorption properties of two bituminous coals at different pressures and temperatures, the molecular unit-cell structures of two types of bituminous coal are constructed (C1180H960O120N20 and C1160H860O80N20) by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The bituminous coal molecular FTIR spectroscopic curve is calculated by quantum chemistry, and the results are consistent with the experimental curve. The isothermal adsorption curves of the single-component gases CO, CO2, and O2 conform to the Langmuir equation from 20 to 60 °C. The adsorption simulations are mainly performed using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) methods. The amount of adsorption decreases with increasing temperature at the same pressure, and CO2 can be the first to reach adsorption saturation at the same temperature. The CO2/CO adsorption selectivity for binary gas mixtures has apparent advantages in low-pressure or shallow buried coal seams. The adsorption selectivity of O2/CO varying under different pressures is not obvious. The high amount of CO inhibits the adsorption capacity of CO2 and O2. In other words, the effect of injecting CO2 to control fire extinguishing in bituminous coal seams with high abnormal CO concentrations is not significant.

Abstract:In this paper we have simulated the competitive adsorption of CO2, CH4, and N2 gases in deep coal seams by building a graphite supercell structure and discussed the impact of pressure, pore size, and multicomponent composition on CH4 desorption. The results show that the adsorption capacity of a single component gas changes is in the order of CO2 > CH4> N2. For the CH4/CO2 competitive adsorption, absorbed CO2 can reach saturation at low pressure conditions. CO2 has an adsorptive advantage compared with CH4. It is shown that CO2 can promote the CH4 desorption by the displacement mechanism. For CH4/N2competitive adsorption, the adsorption capacity of N2 is weaker than that of CH4, demonstrating that improvement in coalbed methane (CBM) production by N2 injection is achieved by reducing the partial pressure and creating flow channels. The presence of H2O has a greater impact on the gas with a stronger adsorption capacity in the binary component system. For the CH/CO2/N2 competitive adsorption, the CO2 adsorption is dominant in 1 nm slit pores, while CH4 adsorption is dominant in 2 nm slit pores. This indicates that when the pore diameter increases, the CO2/N2 injection does not promote CH4 desorption. H2O also has a significant impact on the competitive adsorption in the ternary component system. The strong interaction between H2O and CO2 weakens the CO2 adsorption capacity.

Abstract:The utilization of CO2 is extremely important to solve the environmental problems and coal spontaneous combustion in goaf. There are three kinds of CO2 utilization in goaf: adsorption, diffusion, and seepage. Since adsorption will consume CO2 in goaf, the optimization of CO2 injection amount is very critical. A self-developed adsorption experimental device was used to determine the CO2 adsorption capacity of three different particle sizes of lignite coal samples at 30-60 °C and 0.1-0.7 MPa. The factors affecting CO2 adsorption by coal and its thermal effect were studied. In the coal and CO2 system, the CO2 adsorption characteristic curve is not affected by temperature, but there are differences in that with different particle sizes. The adsorption capacity increases with the increase of pressure, while it decreases with the increase of temperature and particle size. Under atmospheric pressure, the adsorption capacity of coal is a logistic function relationship with temperature. Furthermore, the average adsorption heat of CO2 on lignite shows that the interaction force between CO2 molecules has a stronger effect on CO2 adsorption than the effect of heterogeneity and anisotropy on the coal surface. Finally, the existing gas injection equation is improved theoretically with CO2 dissipation, which provides a new idea for the work of CO2 prevention and fire suppression in goaf.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to investigate the sorption behavior of gases, namely CO2, CH4, and N2, by molecules of coal sampled from Linglu mine under different water inclusion rates. To this end, the adsorption, diffusion, adsorption heat, and potential energy distribution characteristics of the gases in the coal pores at different water inclusion rates were analyzed using molecular dynamics and grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo methods. The results showed that the adsorption relationship of the coal molecules on CO2, CH4, and N2 exhibited a downtrend followed by an uptrend when the water content was increased from 0 to 3.6%. The adsorption amount of CO2 was approximately twice as much as those of CH4 and N2, indicating that the competitive adsorption advantage of CO2 compared with those of CH4 and N2 was unaffected by the water content. The trend in the average heat of adsorption was generally consistent with the trend in the density of coal molecules under different moisture contents. Under the same conditions, the diffusion coefficient within a coal molecule was negatively related to the water content in the system. The layer spacing of the water molecules (2.875 Å) was greater than the liquid-water layer spacing, indicating the formation of a water molecule layer at this point, which inhibited gas adsorption. This study lays a theoretical foundation for further investigating the microscopic mechanism of coal-water interaction.
Effects of CO2 adsorption on molecular structure characteristics of coal: Implications for CO2 geological sequestration

Abstract:With a series of global problems such as greenhouse effect caused by the gradual increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration, CO2 geological storage has become one of the effective measures. To study the influence of the interaction between CO2 and coal on the molecular structure characteristics of coal, three coals of different ranks were selected for CO2 adsorption and were subjected to X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy experiments. The results indicate that with increasing of CO2 pressure: 1) Due to the solubility differences of different minerals, the contents of quartz in the coal samples gradually increases, while the contents of calcite, pyrite and kaolinite decreases; 2) The average number of the aromatic layers gradually decreased indicates that some aromatic layers are destroyed and order degree is lowered in the coal microcrystalline structure, resulting in a gradual increase of the inter-layer spacing between aromatic layers, the stacking of aromatic layers; 3) The concentration of aromatic rings gradually decreases leading to the intermolecular structural defects are obvious and the gradual evolution of the microcrystalline structure into the more disordered crystal structure; 4) The hydroxyl groups are predominated by oxidation reactions in long-flame coal and lean coal, while they are mainly governed by swelling in anthracite; 5) The ratio between aliphatic and total hydrogen atoms (Hal/H), aliphatic structure (I 1) and ‘A’ factor values of the anthracite reveal a slight increase, while the aromaticity 2 (AR2) and degree of condensation 2 (DOC2) values display a decreasing trend. These values of long-flame coal and lean coal only slightly change. The influence of CO2 intrusion on coal properties due to the changes of molecular structure and CO2 trapping mechanisms are discussed. Our research contributes to understand deeply the geological sequestration of CO2 in coal seams and higher CO2 injection pressures should be adopted.

Abstract:The adsorption kinetic characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in coal provide crucial information for increasing coal seam gas recovery. In this study, isothermal adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted using automatic high-pressure gas adsorption analyzer to reveal differences in adsorption kinetic characteristics of CH4, CO2, and N2 in coal. The research shows that, before reaching adsorption equilibrium, the adsorption ratio of CO2 was higher than that of N2 while that of CH4 was the smallest. The initial adsorption rates of CO2, CH4, and N2 were 1998, 205, and 76 cm3 g−1 h−1, respectively. The order of decreasing gas adsorption rate with respect to the fluctuation zone was CO2 → N2 → CH4. Before reaching adsorption equilibrium, the gas adsorption ratio at high temperature was higher than that at low temperature. The adsorption rates (Rt) of gas were divided into a rapid decay zone (Rt > 0.1 Qe/h), slow decay zone (0.01 Qe/h < Rt < 0.1 Qe/h), and an adsorption equilibrium zone (|Rt| < 0.01 Qe/h). Among the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation, the Fickian diffusion model and the dynamic diffusion model, the latter can best describe the adsorption kinetic process of coal. This work is expected to improve the theoretical basis of enhancing coal seam gas recovery and enrich the theory of gas adsorption in coal.

Abstract:CO2 and N2 are widely used in the prevention of the coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) due to their advantages of inerting, oxygen isolation, cooling, explosion suppression, large diffusion range, etc. However, there are competitive adsorption effects that occur when CO2, N2 and O2 enter the coal due to their respective different adsorption properties, but few studies have addressed. In this work, isothermal adsorption experiments of pure CO2, O2, N2 and their two-component mixtures (CO2-N2, CO2-O2, and N2-O2) were conducted on coal particles, and their respective adsorption curves were plotted. Subsequently, a density gradient transport model for the two-component gases in the coal particles was established, which was solved numerically to calculate the cumulative adsorption of CO2 and its microchannel diffusion coefficient (K m) under the competitive adsorption conditions. The model was finally validated by comparing the simulation results of four coal samples with their experimental data. The results show that (i) the adsorption capacity of pure gas is consistent with CO2 > O2 > N2, while the adsorption of two-component gas mixture is between the adsorption of strong and weak adsorbents; (ii) in the competitive adsorption environments (CO2-N2 or CO2-O2), the adsorption curves of N2 and O2 demonstrate the whole process of the displacement of these gases by the CO2, but there is almost no displacement effect in the O2-N2 environment; (iii) the simulation results of CO2 match well with the experimental data, so the migration behavior of CO2 component in the mixtures can be considered to be consistent with the free gas density gradient diffusion. The K m of pure CO2 is significantly larger than that of CO2 in the mixtures, about 2.03–3.93 times, and there is an asymmetric U-shaped relationship distribution between the Km and coal ranks. This work visualizes the displacement and migration behavior of the two-component gas mixtures in the coal particles, and provide a theoretical reference for the competitive adsorption of two-component gases in the CSC.

Abstract:Understanding the adsorption and diffusion of CO2 and N2 in lignite at high temperature is of great significance for fire prevention and control. Considering the influence of temperature on coal structure, molecular structure models of lignite at 298.15, 323.15, 423.15, and 523.15 K were constructed by molecular mechanics and dynamics, and grand canonical Monte Carlo molecular simulation was conducted for single-component and two-component systems under different temperatures, pressures, and gas ratios. The adsorption capacity was positively correlated with the pressure and molar ratio of CO2 but negatively correlated with the temperature. The adsorption amount of CO2 (1.060 mmol/g) was generally larger than that of N2 (0.069 mmol/g), showing a greater selectivity. However, CO2 was more sensitive to temperature, and the adsorption amount decreased faster with the increase in temperature. At high temperature, the adsorption amount of CO2 and N2 is basically equal, both of which are at a low level. The CO2 isosteric heat of adsorption (7.46–8.84 kcal/mol) varies significantly with temperature. The interaction energy is consistent with the change trend of adsorption quantity, and van der Waals energy plays a dominant role in adsorption. Injecting CO2 and N2 at the high temperature stage has a poor extinguishing effect, which can only dilute oxygen content and exchange heat, and the advantage of CO2 will be lost. It may be more effective using liquid nitrogen which has the properties of low temperature and high specific heat capacity. The results are of great significance to improve the efficiency of fire prevention and suppression in underground coal mines.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:To study the importance of the adsorption mechanism of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in coal for coalbed methane development, we aimed to reveal the influence mechanism of adsorption pressure, temperature, gas properties, water content, and other factors on gas molecular adsorption behavior from the molecular level. In this study, we selected the nonsticky coal in Chicheng Coal Mine as the research object. Based on the coal macromolecular model, we used the molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (GCMC) methods to simulate and analyze the conditions of different pressure, temperature, and water content. The change rule and microscopic mechanism of the adsorption amount, equal adsorption heat, and interaction energy of CO2 and CH4 gas molecules in the coal macromolecular structure model establish a theoretical foundation for revealing the adsorption characteristics of coalbed methane in coal and provide technical support for further improving coalbed methane extraction.

Abstract:Adsorption characteristics of methane on coals before and after supercritical CO2 extraction are closely related to CO2 injection in coal seams for enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery and CO2 sequestration. Using self-developed extraction facility of supercritical fluids and micro-calorimetric measurement system, this work studied the adsorption behavior of methane on six types of coals which were pretreated with supercritical CO2 at 45 °C and 10 MPa for two weeks. The effects of supercritical extraction, coal rank and pressure on adsorption amount of methane, integral heat of adsorption and pore structure of coal samples have been analyzed. To interpret the experimental data, dynamical models are developed to describe the variations of gas pressure and heat released in the process of adsorption, and corresponding isotherm models are proposed to characterize the adsorption amount and adsorption heat for pretreated and untreated coal samples. The correlation between the integral adsorption heat and adsorption amount was discussed for different coal samples. It is found that compared with untreated coals, the adsorption amount and integral adsorption heat for pretreated coals are reduced, and the decrements are largely dependent on the coal rank. The integral adsorption heat relates linearly with the adsorption amount, and the ratio coefficients for medium rank coals decrease after supercritical CO2 extraction, whereas an increasing trend is found for low-rank and high-rank coals. In addition, it is revealed that the volume of micropores is reduced by supercritical CO2 extraction for low-rank and medium-rank coals, while no significant change is found for high-rank coals.
Molecular simulation of N2 and CO2 injection into a coal model containing adsorbed methane at different temperatures

Abstract:To research the dynamic mechanism of nitrogen and carbon dioxide displacement of methane, we used the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation method to determine the lowest energy coal model containing adsorbed methane. The desorption behavior of CH4 after the injection of N2 and CO2 at different temperatures was studied. Results show that CO2 and N2 were mainly used to drive off methane gas by occupying adsorption sites. The total energy of the CH4-CO2 model was lower than that of the CH4-N2 model. With the increased of temperature, the average relative concentration and motion velocity of CH4 in the vacuum layer increased. The relationship of the average relative concentration and average velocity distribution of the three gases in the vacuum layer was CH4>CO2>N2. Under the same time conditions, the relationship between the mean square displacement and diffusion coefficient of CH4, CO2, and N2 in different models was CH4>CO2>N2, and they all increased with temperature. The diffusion activation energy of CH4 in the model injected with CO2 was reduced by 20.53%, and the effect of injecting CO2 to promote the desorption of methane was better than that of N2.

Abstract:In order to clarify the microscopic coupling mechanism among chemical composition and structure, nanopores and gas adsorption, this study used molecular simulation to investigate the adsorption behavior of CH4 and CO2 molecules in different coal physicochemical structure models under various environment conditions. The results show that with the dissolution of low molecular weight compounds (LMWCs), the absolute adsorption capacity for CO2 and CH4 in aromatic pores gradually increases, and slit pores show a more obvious promotional effect on gas adsorption. On the other hand, observing the radial distribution function(RDF) between the main functional groups in coal and CH4/CO2, oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic structures display a significant impact on the distribution of gas molecules on coal surface, especially –COOH and -O- groups. While free LMWCs are easy to generate competitive adsorption with gas molecules. Further, on the basis of adsorption heat and energy changes in coal-gas system, it concludes that CH4 molecules on the coal surface always keep physical adsorption, but CO2 molecules are dominated by physical adsorption with weak chemical adsorption. Finally, the relationship among chemical composition and structure, nanopores and gas adsorption is established to reveal the microscopic coupling effect during gas adsorption.

Abstract:Coal seam deformation due to gas adsorption affects the stability of the underground structure. Natural coal blocks of the Shanxi Formation were selected to study the dynamic adsorption characteristics of coal samples subjected to CO2, CH4, and N2 gas injections under coaxial pressure and confining pressure (7 MPa), as well as the displacement of CH4 with CO2 and N2 under the same conditions. The results show that, under the same conditions, the strain in the coal samples first increased, followed by a rapid increase along with the increase in pressure, with the transverse strain being always higher than the axial strain. The amount of gas adsorption varied from high to low as CO2 > CH4 > N2, and the final adsorption strains and equilibrium times were different for each gas. Based on the increase in gas pressure, the gas adsorption strain curve can be divided into two stages. The displacement of N2 only uses partial pressure to achieve the desorption of CH4 in the coal sample, leading to shrinkage deformation of the coal sample. In contrast, the displacement of CO2 has the dual effects of competitive adsorption and partial pressure reduction on CH4, leading to the swelling deformation of the coal sample.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Gas injection for enhancing gas recovery (GI–EGR) is a multifaceted process that requires a solid theoretical foundation to be implemented orderly. However, there are limited reports on the micro-mechanisms of GI–EGR technology applied to coalbed methane reservoirs, especially for deep strata. To address this gap, this study utilized molecular simulation techniques to construct the organic pore models of anthracite with varying sizes and morphologies, and explored the micro-dynamic behaviors of CH 4 and various gas injected components including N 2 , CO 2 and flue gas confined in nanopores. The aim was to reveal the competitive adsorption mechanisms of gases in multi-component systems under shallow and deep geological conditions. The results demonstrated that the isosteric heats of CH 4 , N 2 and CO 2 all increased after the transition from shallow to deep, with rising amplitudes of 18.8%, 22.8% and 17.8%, respectively, in the respective single-component systems. In multi-component adsorption models, the isosteric heats remained higher than those under shallow conditions, but there were some small fluctuations due to the interference between various gases. On the other hand, the self-diffusion coefficients of single CH 4 , N 2 and CO 2 in the deep condition decreased by 37.6%, 27.2% and 23.1%, respectively, compared to those in conventional shallow conditions. As a consequence, the difference in diffusivity among various gases would get narrowed. The molecular-level observations herein have the potential to improve the understanding of gas occurrence and lay a solid foundation for the GI–EGR technology.

Abstract:There is a physical process of CH4, CO2 and H2O multi-gas competitive adsorption in the process of injecting flue gas or CO2 to enhance coalbed methane recovery. In order to clarify the microscopic mechanism of the competitive adsorption of CH4, CO2 and H2O, a macromolecular structure model of Jixi gas-fertilized coal was constructed in this paper, and the competitive adsorption behaviors of binary and ternary mixed-component gases with different molar volume fractions were investigated by using the Giant Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) methods at the temperature of 293.15 K. To analyze the laws of pressure, volume fraction and competition between different gas components for the effect of adsorption amount, isosteric heat of adsorption, interaction energy, energy distribution, probability density distribution, and adsorption selectivity coefficient. The results showed that under the same conditions, the adsorption amounts from high to low were H2O>CO2 >CH4. The adsorption amounts of each gas component increased with the increase of volume fraction. The adsorption selectivity coefficient decreases with increasing equilibrium pressure and increasing molar volume fraction of strongly adsorbed gas.CO2 and H2O occupy the adsorption sites of CH4, making the CH4 adsorption space smaller and the adsorption sites more concentrated. The interaction energy increases with the increase of the molar fraction of strongly adsorbed gases in the multifunctional system.

Abstract:Gas injection into coal seams is gaining increasing attention for improving coalbed methane (CBM) production. This technical development requires detailed and reliable information on gas adsorption/desorption-induced deformation and gas occurrence mechanisms. Hence, in this paper, high volatile bituminous coal was taken as the experiment samples from northern Shannxi Province, China, and adsorption-induced swelling experiments with CO2 and N2 were carried out under the conditions of one-time injection and step-by-step injection. Then, based on adsorption-induced swelling characteristics, a thermodynamic model was further established to disclose the adsorption/desorption-induced deformation mechanism of confined coals. Results showed that the swelling/shrinkage strain curves of CO2 and N2 adsorption/desorption in the coal matrix were generally divided into four stages, including pressurization-deformation, adsorption-induced swelling, depressurization-deformation, and finally desorption-induced shrinkage. It can be seen that the coal swelling effect caused by N2 adsorption was far less than that caused by CO2 adsorption. However, both CO2 and N2 adsorption displayed that the apparent volumetric swelling weakened with increasing strain when compared with the same adsorption pressure under different strain conditions. In contrast, the absolute volumetric swelling of the confined coal was a coupling result from adsorption-induced swelling and pore pressure effects. Further, based on the thermodynamic model, it was verified that the adsorbate type, the chemical potential of the adsorbate molecule and stress conditions are key factors affecting adsorption-induced swelling of coal under a certain temperature and pressure. In addition, a desorption lag phenomenon during the desorption-induced shrinkage stage was observed, due to incomplete gas desorption and gas retention in the coal macromolecular network. It was also found that there was a shrinkage phenomenon after the peak strain during gas adsorption. That is to say, when fixed adsorption sites on the coal pore surface reached the adsorption saturation state at the peak strain, gas molecules would be stored in an absorption state in the coal macromolecular network under continuous adsorption. These phenomena further explained coal swelling and gas occurrence mechanisms.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of H2S on gas adsorption in a coal seam, the adsorption characteristics of single-component CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S and multicomponent H2S mixed with CO2, CH4, and N2 by anthracite were simulated by using the Grand Canonical Ensemble Monte Carlo (GCMC) method. The results show that the adsorption capacity of CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S in anthracite decreases with increasing temperature and increases with increasing pressure. The isothermal adsorption curves of CO2, CH4, N2, and H2S and different proportions of H2S/CH4, H2S/N2, and H2S/CO2 are highly consistent with the Langmuir equation, and the R 2 is above 0.99. Under different temperature and pressure conditions, the adsorption capacity of H2S and CO2 is stronger than that of coal for N2 and CH4, and the adsorption capacity difference is about 3 mmol/g. There is competitive adsorption among H2S, CO2, CH4, and N2, and H2S has a superior adsorption property. When H2S and other gases exist at the same time, the adsorption capacities of CH4, N2, and CO2 are reduced by 48-60%, 81-91%, and 51-66%, respectively.
