Abstract:Signaling pathways that govern embryonic stem cell (ESCs) differentiation are not well characterized. Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator that modulates other signaling pathways in part by activating soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) to produce cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). Because of its importance in endothelial cell (EC) growth in the adult, we hypothesized that NO may play a critical role in EC development. Accordingly, we assessed the role of NO in ESC differentiation into ECs. Murine ESCs differentiated in the presence of NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME) for up to 11 days were not significantly different from vehicle-treated cells in EC markers. However, by 14 days, L-NAME-treated cells manifested modest reduction in EC markers CD144, FLK1, and endothelial NOS. ESC-derived ECs generated in the presence of L-NAME exhibited reduced tube-like formation in Matrigel. To understand the discrepancy between early and late effects of L-NAME, we assessed the NOS machinery and observed low mRNA expression of NOS and sGC subunits in ESCs, compared to differentiating cells after 14 days. In response to NO donors or activation of NOS or sGC, cellular cGMP levels were undetectable in undifferentiated ESCs, at low levels on day 7, and robustly increased in day 14 cells. Production of cGMP upon NOS activation at day 14 was inhibited by L-NAME, confirming endogenous NO dependence. Our data suggest that NOS elements are present in ESCs but inactive until later stages of differentiation, during which period NOS inhibition reduces expression of EC markers and impairs angiogenic function.

Abstract:This work reports an ultrasonic long waveguide sensor for measuring the fluid level utilizing longitudinal L (0, 1), torsional T (0, 1), and flexural F (1, 1) wave modes. These wave modes were transmitted and received simultaneously using stainless-steel wire. A long waveguide (>12 m) covers a broader region of interest and is suitable in the process industry's hostile environment applications, "fluid levels and temperature measurements." In this work, we used fluids "diesel, water, and glycerin" for measuring fluid levels based on the sensor's reflection factors from time domain and frequency domain signals. We examined the impact of wave mode attenuation effects for long waveguide sensor design while changing the waveguide lengths. Initially, we obtained the L (0, 1) and T (0, 1) modes reflections from the 12.6 m waveguide length when one end of the long waveguide was fixed with a shear transducer at 45° orientation. Subsequently, we want to study and identify all wave modes (especially F mode) travel distances. Hence, we would like to investigate the guided wave propagation characteristics (attenuation, ultrasonic velocity, and frequency of all wave modes) in the long waveguide while cutting systematically at intervals of 1 m, starting from its original length of the waveguide 12.6 m by analyzing the A-scan signals of various lengths of a single waveguide. This simple and cost-effective technique can monitor the high fluid depths and temperature in power plants, oil, and petrochemical industries while designing a long waveguide sensor with appropriate ultrasonic parameters.

A New Procedure for Exploring the Dispersion Characteristics of Longitudinal Guided Waves in a Multi-layered Tube with a Weak Interface

Abstract:Dispersion characteristic of longitudinal guided wave plays an important role in detecting defect of multi-layered tube. Here, a new procedure is proposed to explore such dispersion characteristic in a kind of multi-layered tube with weak interface. The mathematical equations are firstly established, from which the spectral method is applied to get an approximate solution in the whole axial wave number range, and the customary root-finding approach is then developed to improve the solution’s accuracy in some local axial wave number regions. Based on the above procedure, an algorithm is designed and applied to several numerical examples for a two-layered tube with the intact and weak interfaces. The results show that the present procedure preserves both the efficiency of the spectral method and the accuracy of the root-finding approach, and can be employed in defect detection by longitudinal guided wave on the multi-layered tube with weak interface effectively.
Experimental verification of directional liquid surface wave emission at band edge frequencies

Abstract:Directional liquid surface wave emission at band edge frequencies is an interesting physical phenomenon and has already been studied in theoretical research. There has been no experimental validation of it to date, however. This paper has as its subject the experimental investigation of the emission effect when a point source is placed inside a finite square array of rigid cylinders standing vertically in liquid. Both the wave patterns and spatial intensities are obtained by experiment and compared with simulated results calculated by using the finite element method. We can see from this comparison that the two results correspond closely both at lower and upper band edge frequency. Obvious directional wave emission along a desired direction is observed in the source structures, confirming previous theoretical predictions. In the future, this method could serve as a directional liquid wave source in applications used in hydraulic and ocean engineering for the concentration of wave energy.
Dispersion of Guided Waves in Viscous Liquid-Filled Pipes

Abstract:This paper describes an investigation of the dispersion of the ultrasonic guided waves in pipes filled with viscous liquid. The group velocities of guided waves were analysed using the pulse-echo method. The influence of different parameters such as inner-radios-thickness ratio (rid), propagation distance and fd on the wave-packet amplitude of lower order guided waves is presented in this paper by simulation and experiment. The normal beam transducers were used to excite and receive the desired guided wave modes. The transducer was placed at the end of the pipes in experiments. The results have shown that the fd cut-off of the guided wave modes reduces with the increase of rid. When rid is small, any change of rid has a great influence on the dispersive characteristics of lower guided waves, but with the increase of rid r/d, the influence of rid on guided waves will be reduced. The influence of rid on guided waves will also be reduced with the increase of the order of guided waves. The experimental observation agrees well with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:The accurate detection of liquid-level plays an important role in industrial process. This paper presents a method for liquid-level measurement based on Lamb waves. The dispersion equation of Lamb waves under unilateral liquid load is deduced to obtain the dispersion curves. The structure and attenuation curves are analyzed under a certain frequency and thickness, and the modes with more energy loss are selected. The ratio of the signal energy of the liquid-level at the upper and lower positions is defined as the discrimination to indicate the change of the liquid-level. The models of the liquid storage tank are built and the Lamb waves of different modes are simulated using the finite element method. The experimental results reveal that it is easy to detect the difference in ultrasonic signals when the liquid-level changes. Compared with the longitudinal wave detection method, the proposed method improves the discrimination of liquid-level detection. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical calculations.

Optimal Mode and Frequency-Thickness of Guided Waves Testing in Viscous Liquid-Filled Pipes

Abstract:The axial power flow distribution and attenuation coefficient distribution of ultrasonic longitudinal guided waves in viscous liquid-filled pipes were calculated and analyzed.The optimal location,optimal mode and its frequency-thickness products (fd) for the test pipes filled with viscous liquid were chosen according to the axial power flow distribution.The results showed that for NDT of viscous liquid-filled pipes,the optimal frequency- thickness products and testing locations of using each mode were L (0,1) mode under 0.07 MHz·mm for inner wails,and L(0,2) mode in 0.09～0.16 MHz·mm for everywhere,L(0,3) mode in 0.18～0.28 MHz·mm.Axial power flow distribution can be effective in choosing the optimal guided waves and its frequency-thickness products of NDT.

Abstract:The local mechanisms of antitumor immune defense determine the development and organization of the tumor microenvironment, and the composition and relative proportions of the inflammatory cell population affect the quality and characteristics of the immune response. The aim of the present study was to conduct a quantitative morphological evaluation of two types of tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TILs) populations, including those located in the stroma and intraepithelial cancer structures, in the invasive front and the center of the tumor in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The study included 160 patients with CRC who had undergone surgery. The tissue material was stained with hematoxylin and eosin, as used in routine histopathological diagnosis, and the two TIL populations were observed and counted with light microscopy. The relative extent of infiltration of stromal and intraepithelial TILs into the front and center of the primary tumors was similar. The extent of infiltration by stromal TILs was negatively correlated with the morphological features of tumor progression including the cancer infiltration of blood vessels (P=0.016), the invasion of lymph vessels (P=0.007), perineural invasion (P=0.036), lymph node involvement (P=0.047) and distant metastases (P=0.032). The infiltration by intraepithelial TILs was positively correlated with a desmoplastic reaction (P=0.002). Disease-free survival time was statistically shorter in patients without intraepithelial TILs in the center of the primary tumor mass (P=0.049; hazard ratio = 1.45). These results confirm that the infiltration of TILs into the invasive front and center of the tumor in patients with CRC serves an important role in the invasion and progression of the disease, and should be considered in routine histopathological examinations.

Abstract:The study of optical microcavity sensors in current micro optical electromechanical systems (MOEMS) devices is an important research direction in this field. In this study, a surface plasmon optical waveguide structure with MIM (Metal Insulator Metal), semi-circular resonator, and T-shaped resonator was examined. The effects of the coupling distance, the geometrical size of the T-shaped cavity and its asymmetry, and the radius of the semi-circular cavity on the Fano resonance spectrum were analyzed numerically. The sensitivity of the refractive index sensor was up to1066.67nm/RIU. The detection of the water content of the heavy oil found that the Fano resonance line shifted to the short-wave direction as the volume percentage of the contained water increased. The volume percentage resolution of the sensor's heavy oil water content could be as low as2.05×10-9. The proposed structure can overcome the shortcomings of common refractive index sensors and therefore has great application prospects in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:The frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) and interferometry are two widely used investigative techniques that have been instrumented using optical and microwave devices for a diverse array of sensing applications. In this article, we present a highly sensitive liquid-level sensor using a custom hollow coaxial cable transmission line. Measurements of liquid levels with high sensitivity and resolution can be achieved by both FDR and interferometry-based measurements using the same sensor device. We show that FDR-based measurements are more straightforward for liquid-level sensing and are suitable for both small and large variations of liquid level, while interferometry-based measurements provide slightly higher measurement resolution than the FDR-based measurements but require additional data processing and are only suitable for sensing small variations of liquid level. We experimentally demonstrate that the FDR-based measurements exhibit a linear response over a large dynamic range of 122 mm with an estimated resolution of m. The capability of the proposed sensing system for the measurements of multiple levels of a stratified liquid (oil+water) is also investigated based on FDR measurements. The presented work suggests that the two different measurement techniques, namely, FDR and interferometry, can be flexibly applied to the proposed coaxial probe for liquid-level sensing based on different applications.

Dispersion analysis of leaky guided waves in fluid-loaded waveguides of generic shape

Abstract:A fully coupled 2.5D formulation is proposed to compute the dispersive parameters of waveguides with arbitrary cross-section immersed in infinite inviscid fluids. The discretization of the waveguide is performed by means of a Semi-Analytical Finite Element (SAFE) approach, whereas a 2.5D BEM formulation is used to model the impedance of the surrounding infinite fluid. The kernels of the boundary integrals contain the fundamental solutions of the space Fourier-transformed Helmholtz equation, which governs the wave propagation process in the fluid domain. Numerical difficulties related to the evaluation of singular integrals are avoided by using a regularization procedure. To improve the numerical stability of the discretized boundary integral equations for the external Helmholtz problem, the so called CHIEF method is used. The discrete wave equation results in a nonlinear eigenvalue problem in the complex axial wavenumbers that is solved at the frequencies of interest by means of a contour integral algorithm. In order to separate physical from non-physical solutions and to fulfill the requirement of holomorphicity of the dynamic stiffness matrix inside the complex wavenumber contour, the phase of the radial bulk wavenumber is uniquely defined by enforcing the Snell-Descartes law at the fluid-waveguide interface. Three numerical applications are presented. The computed dispersion curves for a circular bar immersed in oil are in agreement with those extracted using the Global Matrix Method. Novel results are presented for viscoelastic steel bars of square and L-shaped cross-section immersed in water.

Abstract:The dispersive characteristics of higher order mode Lamb waves (HOMLW) excited by interdigital transducers (IDT) are measured and analyzed, which are necessary for designing micro-sensor in ultrahigh frequency (UHF). A measurement system is set up, in which dispersive characteristics of HOMLW are obtained by the method of transform between frequency and time domains. The characteristics of amplitude–frequency and phase–frequency of Lamb wave are auto-measured by the system. By IFFT, the pulse response of the IDT device was obtained. Different modes were separated in time domain and dispersive curve of each mode is calculated by FFT. The best mode is chosen to design the micro-sensor in UHF. The phase velocity of HOMLW is greater than the surface wave (SAW) velocity and an oscillator in higher frequency can be made, so the absolute sensitivity of micro-sensor can be increased. In this paper, the dispersive characteristics of HOMLW excited by an IDT in a 127.86° rotated Y-cut, X propagating lithium niobate plate is analyzed. An oscillator using a13 mode is made, the phase velocity of which is measured about 19652m/s when h/λ=0.94 (h=plate thickness, λ=wavelength).
A Comprehensive Study on Guided Wave Dispersion in Complex Structures

Abstract:Guided waves play a crucial role in non-destructive testing, offering a reliable and efficient means for inspecting structures and materials. In this paper, we present the implementation of a wave finite element method for extracting dispersion curves, providing a feasible approach for analysing guided wave propagation in structures characterized by complex geometries and diverse material properties. Various numerical examples are investigated, including layered composites, functionally graded materials, rail sections, and metastructures, showcasing the versatility of the method. Mode sorting is a serious problem associated with this method crucial for distinguishing different guided wave modes. A mode sorting algorithm based on modal assurance criteria is implemented which can effectively trace different guided wave modes. To enhance accuracy, dispersion calculations are assisted by incorporating micro-modelling techniques for composite materials. Furthermore, the influence of initial stress on dispersion curves is examined, revealing that the effects of tensile and compressive stresses can vary at different frequencies and for different modes. Attenuation or damping is inherent in every structure and material, significantly influencing wave propagation. The article also investigates viscoelasticity and damping, expanding the method's applicability by introducing a novel approach to calculate attenuation using the frequency domain modulus for computing complex angular frequencies. The present method offers a fast, accurate, and feasible solution for extracting dispersion curves in structures with intricate geometries and material properties.

Abstract:An experimental study has been made of the propagation of ultrasound in liquids under both free-field and guided-wave conditions. Free-field measurements have been made from 1 to 20 Mc in low absorbing liquids, employing both circular and square sound sources. These measurements indicate that the correction for diffraction loss predicted by existing theories is applicable only so long as this loss is smaller than the true absorption. Attenuation measurements also have been made in liquids confined in various cylindrical and rectangular metallic waveguides. For a given configuration, the observed variation with path length of the attenuation follows closely that predicted theoretically for propagation in a solid sample of the same dimensions. Some consideration is given to possible sources of this result which differs somewhat from the predictions of current theories.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves have been widely acknowledged as the most promising tools for nondestructive evaluation (NDE). However, because of the multimodal dispersion, the received guided modes usually overlap in both time and frequency, which highly complicates the mode separation and signal interpretation. The time-reversal technique can be used to realize the time recompression of the Lamb waves, but because of the multimode excitation and reception, it still may not be able to remove the mode ambiguity and achieve the pure pulse compression. With the goal of overcoming this limitation, a wideband dispersion reversal (WDR) technique is proposed. The technique makes use of a priori knowledge of the guided dispersion characteristics to synthesize the corresponding dispersion reversal excitations, which are able to selectively excite the self-compensation pure mode pulse. The theoretical basis of the technique is thoroughly described. A two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (2D-FDTD) method is employed to simulate the propagation of two fundamental Lamb modes, the symmetrical S0 and antisymmetrical A0 modes in a steel plate. The proposed method was verified through experimental investigation. Finally, the advantages and potential applications of the method are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Thin wavy liquid films are used in many applications as heat and mass transfer promoters thanks to their great performances for a small liquid consumption. To evaluate the influence of the coupling between the wavy fluid dynamics and the heat transfer in a 2D waves regime, a pointwise laser-induced fluorescence technique has been developed. The technique enables a simultaneous measurement of both the thickness and the temperature of a wavy film flowing down an inclined plane with a high temporal resolution thanks to an optical probe placed directly above the liquid film. The fluorescence intensity is integrated over the thickness of the film, allowing a robust measurement of temperature and thickness for strongly perturbed wave fronts. This paper reports on the development of the technique and discuss the capabilities and limits of the current design. Water liquid films were investigated under two-dimensional waves conditions. The measurements, and the evaluation of the local heat transfer coefficient they permit, reveal the regions where mixing is enhanced by convective circulation zones.

Abstract:Dissipative couplings between solid-cavity optomechanical oscillators provide an underlying mechanism for many physical phenomena, such as level attraction, non-Hermitian parity-time-symmetric, and topological energy transfer with exceptional points (EPs). Until now, cavity optomechanical mode couplings on different phases of material have not been demonstrated. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of optomechanical mode dissipative coupling, mediated by high-quality-factor photon whispering-gallery modes, between a solid surface wave mode (SWM) and a liquid radial breathing mode (RBM), both of which coexist in an optofluidic microbubble resonator consisting of silica layer and liquid metal core. The resonant frequencies of solid-SWM and liquid-RBM depend mainly on the physical parameters of the silica and liquid metal, respectively. These physical parameters are all related to the microcavity temperature, which can be electrically controlled by wiring the liquid metal to a circuit. The dissipative level attraction between the solid-SWM and liquid-RBM is achieved by changing the current applied to the liquid metal. Our results open new avenues toward exploring topological energy transfer between solid and liquid materials or ultrasensitive biological sensing around EPs.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a four-wave mixing-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) microfluid sensor, and two U-shape microslits fabricated by a femtosecond laser are embedded into the sensor for real-time microfluid measurement. Theoretical and experimental results prove that the signal wavelength is sensitive to both the refractive index (RI) and the material dispersion property of the liquid sample filled into the air channels. For different aqueous target samples at low concentrations, the responses of signal wavelength are consistent with each other. The obtained RI sensitivity is approximately 881.36 nm/RIU, and the sensing resolution is around 1.6 × 10−4 RIU. The proposed sensor also shows a better figure of merit (FOM) as high as 313.65 RIU−1 when compared with the fiber SPR sensors. Besides, the signal wavelengths present different responses with the increasing aqueous concentration due to the separated dispersion characteristics of the filled liquid samples, which can be potentially applied for the discrimination of liquid samples with a well-designed wavelength-coded sensor array in the future.
A mixing surface acoustic wave device for liquid sensing applications: Design, simulation, and analysis

Abstract:This work presents the mixing wave generation of a novel surface acoustic wave (M-SAW) device for sensing in liquids. Two structures are investigated: One including two input and output interdigital transducer (IDT) layers and the other including two input and one output IDT layers. In both cases, a thin (1 μm) piezoelectric AlN layer is in between the two patterned IDT layers. These structures generate longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves with opposite phase which are separated by the film thickness. A 3-dimensional M-SAW device coupled to the finite element method is designed to study the mixing acoustic wave generation propagating through a delay line. The investigated configuration parameters include the number of finger pairs, the piezoelectric cut profile, the thickness of the piezoelectric substrate, and the operating frequency. The proposed structures are evaluated and compared with the conventional SAW structure with the single IDT layer patterned on the piezoelectric surface. The wave displacement along the propagation path is used to evaluate the amplitude field of the mixing longitudinal waves. The wave displacement along the AlN depth is used to investigate the effect of the bottom IDT layer on the transverse component generated by the top IDT layer. The corresponding frequency response, both in simulations and experiments, is an additive function, consisting of sinc(X) and uniform harmonics. The M-SAW devices are tested to assess their potential for liquid sensing, by dropping liquid medium in volumes between 0.05 and 0.13 μl on the propagation path.
