Abstract:When plasmonic nanoparticles are coupled with semiconductors, highly energetic hot carriers can be extracted from the metal-semiconductor interface for various applications in light energy conversion. Hot charge-carrier extraction upon plasmon decay using such an interface has been argued to occur after the formation of an intermediate electron population with a uniform momentum distribution. The efficiency of the charge separation process is thus discussed to be limited by this spatial homogeneity in certain plasmon-induced applications. Here we demonstrate using visible pump, near-infrared probe transient absorption spectroscopy that increases in the contact area between metal and semiconductor leads to an increase in the quantum yield for hot electron injection that is inconsistent with the homogeneous energy-momentum distribution of hot-electrons. Instead, further analysis of the experimental data suggests that the highly energetic electrons are emitted across the interface via a surface charge emission mechanism that occurs via a plasmon excitation

Abstract:ConspectusDuring surface plasmon-mediated light-matter interactions, external energies on plasmonic metal nanostructures undergo energy dissipation via elastic e-e scattering, radiative luminescence, and nonradiative processes such as thermal relaxation (phonon) and electronic excitation (electron-hole pairs). In this process, surface plasmon decays dominantly through nonradiative recombination when the metal is smaller than 25 nm, forming hot carriers, including hot electrons and hot holes, with high kinetic energy of 1-3 eV. Although the ultrafast dynamics of hot carriers are on time scales ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds, these fast-disappearing hot carriers can be collected as the steady-state photocurrent or chemicurrent by adopting the metal-semiconductor (M-S)-based platform for detecting hot carrier flow. Plasmonic hot carriers, especially as they convert to an electrochemical signal, are a promising topic, and their energy conversion mechanisms are being actively studied in the fields of renewable energy, optoelectronics, and photocatalysis. Recent studies have demonstrated that these hot carriers can both improve the performance of solar energy conversion and control the catalytic activity or selectivity by directly participating in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) reaction.In this Account, we describe the inherent relationship between hot carriers and surface plasmon as well as what role hot carriers play throughout the catalytic reaction. The recent experimental work and the theoretical analysis of in situ hot carrier generation on Au nanostructures were conducted with photoconductive atomic force microscopy and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, respectively. We highlight the recent nanoscale visualization of hot carrier flow occurring through light-matter interactions and that the localized surface plasmon field surrounding the Au nanostructure leads to boosted hot carrier generation. In addition, we highlight the recent demonstration that plasmonic hot carriers prolong the lifetime of photoexcited carriers in the MAPbI3/Au/TiO2 hybrid nanodiode by the synergistic effect between plasmonic Au and perovskites. From this work, the solar-to-electron conversion performance of this nanodiode significantly increases due to the amplification of light absorption, which helps to design hybrid platforms for efficient hot carrier photovoltaics. We discuss the application of surface plasmon-driven hot electron generation, including hot electron-based photovoltaic devices and photocatalysts. We highlight the recent photoelectrochemical measurements on the Au/p-GaN heterostructures that are controlled by participating plasmonic hot carriers in the water splitting reaction. Furthermore, controlling the flow of both hot electrons and holes by developing hybrid platform configurations for hot carrier applications has promising opportunities for regulating the catalytic activities of hot carrier-based photocatalysis and improving the photoconversion efficiency of hot carrier-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Abstract Surface plasmons provide a pathway to efficiently absorb and confine light in metallic nanostructures, thereby bridging photonics to the nano scale. The decay of surface plasmons generates energetic ‘hot’ carriers, which can drive chemical reactions or be injected into semiconductors for nano-scale photochemical or photovoltaic energy conversion. Novel plasmonic hot carrier devices and architectures continue to be demonstrated, but the complexity of the underlying processes make a complete microscopic understanding of all the mechanisms and design considerations for such devices extremely challenging.Here,we review the theoretical and computational efforts to understand and model plasmonic hot carrier devices.We split the problem into three steps: hot carrier generation, transport and collection, and review theoretical approaches with the appropriate level of detail for each step along with their predictions.We identify the key advances necessary to complete the microscopic mechanistic picture and facilitate the design of the next generation of devices and materials for plasmonic energy conversion.

Abstract:After the innovative method reported by Fujishima and Honda for hydrogen generation by the UV-light-induced electrochemical water splitting on TiO 2 electrodes [1], many other approaches were developed using hot-carrier generation by light in various semiconductors and metallic nanostructures [2-4]. For example, as an alternative to electrochemical cell systems, semiconductor particles suspended in water became a new field of study [2], where photocatalysis takes place on the surface of the particles. Hydrogen evolution from plasmonic metal-semiconductor heterostructures has also been observed with Au nanorods partially coated with TiO 2 which provide separated Au/TiO 2 regions [3]. In this case, hot electrons are generated in the plasmonic Au nanorods upon light illumination and subsequently some of them filtered out through the Au/TiO 2 Schottky barrier into TiO 2 and become available for photoreduction.

Abstract:Light–matter interactions that induce charge and energy transfer across interfaces form the foundation for photocatalysis<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR2">2</a>, energy harvesting<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR3">3</a> and photodetection<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR4">4</a>, among other technologies. One of the most common mechanisms associated with these processes relies on carrier injection. However, the exact role of the energy transport associated with this hot-electron injection remains unclear. Plasmon-assisted photocatalytic efficiencies can improve when intermediate insulation layers are used to inhibit the charge transfer<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR6">6</a> or when off-resonance excitations are employed<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR7">7</a>, which suggests that additional energy transport and thermal effects could play an explicit role even if the charge transfer is inhibited<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR8">8</a>. This provides an additional interfacial mechanism for the catalytic and plasmonic enhancement at interfaces that moves beyond the traditionally assumed physical charge injection<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="/articles/s41565-020-00794-z#ref-CR12">12</a>. In this work, we report on a series of ultrafast plasmonic measurements that provide a direct measure of electronic distributions, both spatially and temporally, after the optical excitation of a metal/semiconductor heterostructure. We explicitly demonstrate that in cases of strong non-equilibrium, a novel energy transduction mechanism arises at the metal/semiconductor interface. We find that hot electrons in the metal contact transfer their energy to pre-existing free electrons in the semiconductor, without an equivalent spatiotemporal transfer of charge. Further, we demonstrate that this ballistic thermal injection mechanism can be utilized as a unique means to modulate plasmonic interactions. These experimental results are well-supported by both rigorous multilayer optical modelling and first-principle ab initio calculations.

Abstract:We review here our recent studies on plasmonic enhanced photothermal effects in metallic nanostructure, and the applications of such effects. When light is shined on a prefect metamaterial absorber patterned with e-beam lithography, the gold nanoparticles (NPs) forming the absorber can be either transformed to nano-spherical-domes, or to truncated-octahedral shaped or multi-twined nanocrystals with large crystal grain sizes and flat boundary facets. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the gold NPs can be also observed. Evidences clearly show that the surface melting and the coalescence mechanism play a key role on nanocrystals formation. These melted gold nanospheres can even be transferred to another substrate, on which the transferred NPs exhibit excellent size uniformity. The strong photothermal effects can also be utilized to tune silicon photonics waveguides and resonators. It is shown that all-optical photothermal switching of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI), silicon disk resonators, and silicon ring resonators is possible with the help of plasmonic nanoheaters. The switching response time and power consumption are all at reasonably low level.
Hot-Carrier Generation in Plasmonic Nanoparticles: The Importance of Atomic Structure

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles are attractive for plasmon-enhanced generation of hot carriers, which may be harnessed in photochemical reactions. In this work, we analyze the coherent femtosecond dynamics of photon absorption, plasmon formation, and subsequent hot-carrier generation through plasmon dephasing using first-principles simulations. We predict the energetic and spatial hot-carrier distributions in small metal nanoparticles and show that the distribution of hot electrons is very sensitive to the local structure. Our results show that surface sites exhibit enhanced hot-electron generation in comparison to the bulk of the nanoparticle. While the details of the distribution depend on particle size and shape, as a general trend lower-coordinated surface sites such as corners, edges, and {100} facets exhibit a higher proportion of hot electrons than higher-coordinated surface sites such as {111} facets or the core sites. The present results thereby demonstrate how hot carriers could be tailored by careful design of atomic-scale structures in nanoscale systems.

Abstract:Hot carriers generated by plasmonic excitations have recently opened up new avenues in photocatalysis. The transfer of these energetic carriers to adjacent molecules can promote chemical transformations that are important for hydrogen generation by water splitting, CO2 reduction and degradation of organic pollutants. Here, we have developed and optimised a plasmonic hot-carrier catalytic system based on silica nanoparticles decorated with plasmonic gold nanoparticles as a source of hot carriers, equipped with platinum nanoclusters as co-catalyst for the enhancement of hot-carrier extraction. The latter plays a triple role by providing: a surface favourable for molecular adsorption; hot-electron generation near the nanoclusters due to field enhancement effects and electron momentum relaxation facilitating the electron transfer across the metal surface, exactly where molecules are adsorbed. The combination of plasmonic and catalytic metals in nano-heterostructured devices provides a new platform for photocatalytic processes and is of significant interest for future solar-based clean technologies.

Abstract:Hot electrons generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures have the potential to transform photocatalysis, photodetection and other optoelectronic applications. However, the understanding of hot-carrier generation in realistic nanostructures, in particular the relative importance of interband and intraband transitions, remains incomplete. Here we report theoretical predictions of hot-carrier generation rates in spherical nanoparticles of the noble metals silver, gold and copper with diameters up to 30 nanometers obtained from a novel atomistic linear-scaling approach. As the nanoparticle size increases the relative importance of interband transitions from d-bands to sp-bands relative to surface-enabled sp-band to sp-band transitions increases. We find that the hot-hole generation rate is characterized by a peak at the onset of the d-bands, while the position of the corresponding peak in the hot-electron distribution can be controlled through the illumination frequency. In contrast, intraband transitions give rise to hot electrons, but relatively cold holes. Importantly, increasing the dielectric constant of the environment removes hot carriers generated from interband transitions, while increasing the number of hot carriers from intraband transitions. The insights resulting from our work enable the design of nanoparticles for specific hot-carrier applications through their material composition, size and dielectric environment.

Abstract:Hybrid metal/semiconductor nano-heterostructures with strong exciton-plasmon coupling have been proposed for applications in hot carrier optoelectronic devices. However, the performance of devices based on this concept has been limited by the poor efficiency of plasmon-hot electron conversion at the metal/semiconductor interface. Here, we report that the efficiency of interfacial hot excitation transfer can be substantially improved in hybrid metal semiconductor nano-heterostructures consisting of perovskite semiconductors. In Ag–CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals, both the plasmon-induced hot electron and the resonant energy transfer processes can occur on a time scale of less than 100 fs with quantum efficiencies of 50 ± 18% and 15 ± 5%, respectively. The markedly high efficiency of hot electron transfer observed here can be ascribed to the increased metal/semiconductor coupling compared with those in conventional systems. These findings suggest that hybrid architectures of metal and perovskite semiconductors may be excellent candidates to achieve highly efficient plasmon-induced hot carrier devices.

Abstract:Finding higher efficiency schemes for electron–hole separation is of paramount importance for realizing more efficient conversion of solar energy in photovoltaic and photocatalytic devices. Plasmonic energy conversion has been proposed as a promising alternative to conventional electron–hole separation in semiconductor devices. This emerging method is based on the generation of hot electrons in plasmonic nanostructures through electromagnetic decay of surface plasmons. Here, the fundamentals of hot-electron generation, injection and regeneration are reviewed, with special attention paid to recent progress towards photovoltaic devices. This new energy-conversion method potentially offers high conversion efficiencies, while keeping fabrication costs low. However, several considerations regarding the materials, architectures and fabrication methods used need to be carefully evaluated to advance this field.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis has received increasing attention because of its potential to address problems related to the energy crisis and environmental issues. However, conventional semiconductor photocatalysts, such as TiO2 and ZnO, can only be activated by ultraviolet light due to their wide band gap. To extend the light absorption into the visible range, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) has been widely used. Noble metal NPs can couple incident visible light energy to strong LSPR, and the nonradiative decay of LSPR generates nonthermal hot carriers that can be injected into adjacent semiconductor material to enhance its photocatalytic activity. Here we demonstrate that nanoimprint-defined gap plasmonic nanofinger arrays can function as visible light-driven plasmonic photocatalysts. The sub-5 nm gaps between pairs of collapsed nanofingers can support ultra-strong plasmon resonance and thus boost the population of hot carriers. The semiconductor material is exactly placed at the hot spots, providing an efficient pathway for hot carrier injection from plasmonic metal to catalytic materials. This nanostructure thus exhibits high plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light. The hot carrier injection mechanism of this platform was systematically investigated. The plasmonic enhancement factor was calculated using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method and was consistent with the measured improvement of the photocatalytic activity. This platform, benefiting from the precise controllable geometry, provides a deeper understanding of the mechanism of plasmonic photocatalysis.

Abstract:Judicious interfacial-, crystalline-and structural-engineering of plasmonic metal-semiconductor nanocomposites is key to harnessing their plasmonic functions for enhancing solar energy conversion. In this work, metal@semiconductor core-shell nanocrystals with atomically organized interface, quasi-monocrystalline shell and diverse controllable structures/morphologies, which are hardly tractable by conventional synthetic strategies, are accessed by developing an aqueous cation exchange method. The combined studies including Mid-IR femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements show that the superior metal-semiconductor interface attained by the presented method can greatly promote the extraction of hot electrons from metal to semiconductor (the quantum yield of hot electron injection was estimated at similar to 48%) in comparison with the nanostructures bearing unoptimized interfaces. Thus produced metal@semiconductor nanocrystals give 2-3 orders of magnitude enhancement in photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity relative to their counterparts accessed by conventional methods.

Abstract:Plasmonic hybrid nanostructures have opened up avenues for developing new classes of energy conversion materials toward photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and photodetectors. At the core of these applications is how to engineer the interface between the plasmonic/non-plasmonic (typically semiconductor) components, and control the flow and extraction of energetic charge carries within the hybrid system. Despite important advancements on single carrier extraction, the construction of plasmonic nanostructures that can simultaneously harness hot electrons and hot holes has eluded the nascent field. This is because the realization of such nanostructures is extremely challenging, owing to the difficulty in controlled arrangement of disparate materials that can respectively extract hot electrons and holes into one nano-object. Here we present a new dimension for exploitation of plasmonic hot carriers through creating binary energy flow channels across the plasmonic/semiconductor interfaces. This is based on fabrication of the n-type-metal-p-type (n-M-p) heteronanocrystals that consist of plasmonic metal (Au nanorod) adjoined with both n-type (CdS) and p-type (PbS) semiconductors in a core-Janus-shell configuration. Otherwise intractable due to large lattice mismatches, the resulting n-M-p heteronanocrystals display atomically organized interfaces at M-n, M-p and p-n junctions and show suitable interfacial energy barriers. Direct imaging via spatial-resolved surface photovoltage microscopy under NIR light irradiation reveals that the CdS and PbS semiconductor domains can separately collect hot electrons and holes generated from the excitation of plasmons in Au nanorod. This results in extended lifetime of the charge-separated state, and rationalizes the superior performance of n-M-p heteronanocrystals in photocatalytic CO2 reduction even at λ > 700 nm.

Abstract:Hot carriers produced from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanoparticles are intensely studied because of their optoelectronic, photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. From a classical perspective, plasmons are coherent oscillations of the electrons in the nanoparticle, but their quantized nature comes to the fore in the novel field of quantum plasmonics. In this work, we introduce a quantum-mechanical material-specific approach for describing the decay of single quantized plasmons into hot electrons and holes. We find that hot carrier generation rates differ significantly from semiclassical predictions. We also investigate the decay of excitations without plasmonic character and show that their hot carrier rates are comparable to those from the decay of plasmonic excitations for small nanoparticles. Our study provides a rigorous and general foundation for further development of plasmonic hot carrier studies in the plasmonic regime required for the design of ultrasmall devices.

Abstract:The hot carriers generated by plasmon damping hold significant potential for photoelectric conversion and photocatalysis. Despite numerous experiments and theoretical analyses, the precise role of plasmonic hot carriers in such dynamical processes has not been well understood. Here we present a theory of plasmonic photocatalysis based on the microscopic model of electron-vibrational coupling and the vibrational heating mechanism. The nonthermal hot carrier distribution was derived and treated on equal footing with the thermal Fermi-Dirac distribution. The inelastic rates of vibrational excitations were calculated including the effect of multiple electronic transitions. As an example of application, the O$_2$ dissociation on silver nanoparticles was explored with focus on the temperature- and light-intensity dependences. The dissociation rate evolves from a linear regime into a superlinear regime due to the onset of vibrational heating induced by hot carriers. In the nonlinear regime, nonthermal hot carriers greatly promote molecular dissociation. Our findings provide insight into plasmonic photocatalysis, and paves the way for harnessing light energies in the nonthermal regime.

Abstract:The coherent oscillations of mobile charge carriers near the surface of good conductors-surface plasmons-are been exploited in many applications in information technologies, clean energy, high-density data storage, photovoltaics, chemistry, biology, medicine and security. Light can be coupled to surface plasmons and trapped near the interface between a metal and an adjacent material. This leads to the nanoscale confinement of light, impossible by any other means, and a related electromagnetic field enhancement. Microscopic electron dynamic effects associated with surface plasmons are capable of significantly influencing physical and chemical processes near a conductor surface, not only as a result of the high electric fields, but also via the excitation of energetic charge carriers: holes below Fermi level or electrons above it. When remaining inside plasmonic media, these so-called hot carriers result in nonlinear, Kerr-type, optical effects important for controlling light with light. They can also transfer into the surroundings of the nanostructures, resulting in photocurrent, or they can interact with adjacent molecules and materials, inducing photochemical transformations. Understanding the dynamics of hot carriers and related effects in plasmonic nanostructures is essential for the development of ultrafast detectors and nonlinear optical components, broadband photocatalysis, enhanced nanoscale optoelectronic devices, nanoscale and ultrafast temperature control, and other technologies of tomorrow. This review will discuss the basics of plasmonically-engendered hot electrons, theoretical descriptions and experimental methods to study them, and describe prototypical processes and examples of the most promising applications of hot-electron processes at the metal interfaces.

Abstract:Different from conventional optoelectronic devices, plasmon-driven optoelectronic devices achieve efficient energy conversion and regulate the energy distribution of hot carriers through high-energy, non-equilibrium "hot" electron-hole pairs (hot carriers) generated by surface plasmon non-radiative decay, thereby presenting novel opportunities for the advancement of hot carrier optoelectronic devices. As the basis for the practical application of plasmon optoelectronic devices, the quest for exceptional performance plasmon metal materials has always been an important topic in the field of hot carrier optoelectronic devices. Currently, MXenes can be synthesized on a large scale and has excellent photoelectric properties, so it is used to build a variety of hot carrier photodetectors with unique structures and functions. Unlike the fixed surface ends of two-dimensional materials such as graphene, MoS2 and borophene, MXenes has an abundance of surface functional groups. However, the increase of ambient temperature will accelerate the oxidation modification of surface functional groups, thus affecting the life and performance stability of optoelectronic devices. In view of the inherent limitations of experimental research on dynamic characteristics of hot carriers at continuous temperatures, we study the temperature effects on the electronic states distributions and scattering effects based on the theory of multi-body perturbation and quantum mechanics. Particularly, we introduce temperature effect into interband electron transition and phonon-assisted electron transition process to obtain temperature dependent dielectric function. From the perspective of non-radiative decay of surface plasmon, we quantify the hot carrier generation efficiency, energy distribution and transport characteristics by first principles calculations, so as to achieve a systematic study of the ambient temperature dependence of plasmon-induced hot carriers in MXenes. The results show that the interband transition and the phonon-assisted electron transition in MXenes together efficiently produce high-energy hot hole-dominated carriers with a long lifetime and transport distance, which is comparable to borophene. The increase of ambient temperature significantly improves the hot carrier generation efficiency in the infrared range. Meanwhile, the increase of ambient temperature almost does not affect the physical mechanism of hot carrier generation in the visible light, and the generated hot holes show excellent ambient temperature stability. In addition, the increase of ambient temperature decreases the lifetime and transport distance of hot carriers, mainly due to the enhanced scattering of electrons and optical phonons. The research results will provide theoretical and data support for quantitative evaluation of ambient temperature stability of MXenes plasmon optoelectronic devices in practical environment.
