Abstract:The split-and-delay unit (SDU) at FLASH2 will be upgraded to enable the simultaneous operation of two temporally, spatially and spectrally separated probe beams when the free-electron laser undulators are operated in a two-color scheme. By means of suitable thin filters and an optical grating beam path a wide range of combinations of photon energies in the spectral range from 150 eV to 780 eV can be chosen. In this paper, simulations of the spectral transmission and performance parameters of the filter technique are discussed, along with a monochromator with dispersion compensation presently under construction.

Abstract:The Single Particles, Clusters and Biomolecules (SPB) instrument at the European XFEL is located behind the SASE1 undulator, and aims to support imaging and structure determination of biological specimen between about 0.1 micrometer and 1 micrometer size. The instrument is designed to work at photon energies from 3 keV up to 16 keV. This wide operation range is a cause for challenges to the focusing optics. In particular, a long propagation distance of about 900 m between x-ray source and sample leads to a large lateral photon beam size at the optics. The beam divergence is the most important parameter for the optical system, and is largest for the lowest photon energies and for the shortest pulse duration (corresponding to the lowest charge). Due to the large divergence of nominal X-ray pulses with duration shorter than 10 fs, one suffers diffraction from mirror aperture, leading to a 100-fold decrease in fluence at photon energies around 4 keV, which are ideal for imaging of single biomolecules. The nominal SASE1 output power is about 50 GW. This is very far from the level required for single biomolecule imaging, even assuming perfect beamline and focusing efficiency. Here we demonstrate that the parameters of the accelerator complex and of the SASE1 undulator offer an opportunity to optimize the SPB beamline for single biomolecule imaging with minimal additional costs and time. Start to end simulations from the electron injector at the beginning of the accelerator complex up to the generation of diffraction data indicate that one can achieve diffraction without diffraction with about 0.5 photons per Shannon pixel at near-atomic resolution with 1e13 photons in a 4 fs pulse at 4 keV photon energy and in a 100 nm focus, corresponding to a fluence of 1e23 ph/cm^2. This result is exemplified using the RNA Pol II molecule as a case study.

Abstract:In 1990s, the emergence of the 3rd generation synchrotron user facilities equipped with undulator sources, stimulated pioneering works on interaction of coherent X-ray beams with matter, resulted in the development of X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) technique capable to probe nanoscale fluctuations up to kHz frequencies using dynamics of speckle pattern given by scattering of coherent X-ray beam from the sample. More recently (and highly aided by the development of modern high-throughput data analysis algorithms), coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (CXDI), also known as lensless imaging, revolutionized the field of X-ray microscopy, finally bringing users the possibility of non-destructive 2D and 3D imaging of complex structures with unprecedented −10 nm resolution. However, strict requirements to transverse coherence of X-ray probe put serious limits on further development of CXDI-based techniques at the 3rd generation facilities, where coherent flux after spatial filtering becomes unacceptably small at energies above -20 keV. At the same time, the latter was used as one of the strongest arguments of the user community for push towards construction of multibend-achromat-based 4th generation of storage rings with ultra-low emittance. Whereas at the 3rd generation facilities the phase volume of undulator source was dominated by electron beam emittance with negligible influence of other factors, the estimation and minimization of undulator source phase volume at 4 th generation facilities requires more elaborate approach taking into account electron beam energy spread and matching of phase-space ellipses between electron and X-ray beams. Here we present estimations of coherent flux at different energies available for future users of ultra-low-emittance SKIF storage ring (to be commissioned in 2023) and discuss ways of its optimization.

Abstract:Abstract The ability to deliver two coherent X-ray pulses with precise time-delays ranging from a few femtoseconds to nanoseconds enables critical capabilities of probing ultra-fast phenomena in condensed matter systems at X-ray free electron laser (FEL) sources. Recent progress made in the hard X-ray split-and-delay optics developments now brings a very promising prospect for resolving atomic-scale motions that were not accessible by previous time-resolved techniques. Here, we report on characterizing the spatial and temporal coherence properties of the hard X-ray FEL beam after propagating through split-and-delay optics. Speckle contrast analysis of small-angle scattering measurements from nanoparticles reveals well-preserved transverse coherence of the beam. Measuring intensity fluctuations from successive X-ray pulses also reveals that only single or double temporal modes remain in the transmitted beam, corresponding to nearly Fourier transform limited pulses.

Design and Construction of a Test-Stand for the Split and Delay Line at the European XFEL

Abstract:This work presents the design and construction of a test-stand for the Split and Delay Line (SDL) at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) in Hamburg, Germany. The advancements in Free Electron Laser technology have now made it possible to investigate ultra-fast dynamics in materials science, biology, chemistry, etc. In the SDL, an incident free electron laser pulse is split into two parts by a beam splitter: one half travels along the upper branch, and the other half travels along the lower branch. These two pulses can either merge again in the collinear mode or travel along different optical paths toward the sample in the inclined mode. This setup achieves a temporal separation of a few femtoseconds between the X-ray pulse pairs, which is crucial for ultra-fast X-ray pump-probe experiments investigating rapid dynamics. This report provides detailed documentation of the mechanical and electronic configuration of the test-stand, vacuum testing, the manufacturing of supporting cables, and the challenges encountered during the project. Finally, the SDL was successfully assembled and initially validated under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) operating conditions.

Abstract:X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have opened up unprecedented opportunities for time-resolved nano-scale imaging with X-rays. Near-field propagation-based imaging, and in particular near-field holography (NFH) in its high-resolution implementation in cone-beam geometry, can offer full-field views of a specimen's dynamics captured by single XFEL pulses. To exploit this capability, for example in optical-pump/X-ray-probe imaging schemes, the stochastic nature of the self-amplified spontaneous emission pulses, i.e. the dynamics of the beam itself, presents a major challenge. In this work, a concept is presented to address the fluctuating illumination wavefronts by sampling the configuration space of SASE pulses before an actual recording, followed by a principal component analysis. This scheme is implemented at the MID (Materials Imaging and Dynamics) instrument of the European XFEL and time-resolved NFH is performed using aberration-corrected nano-focusing compound refractive lenses. Specifically, the dynamics of a micro-fluidic water-jet, which is commonly used as sample delivery system at XFELs, is imaged. The jet exhibits rich dynamics of droplet formation in the break-up regime. Moreover, pump-probe imaging is demonstrated using an infrared pulsed laser to induce cavitation and explosion of the jet.

Abstract:Abstract X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) enable obtaining novel insights in structural biology. The recently available MHz repetition rate XFELs allow full data sets to be collected in shorter time and can also decrease sample consumption. However, the microsecond spacing of MHz XFEL pulses raises new challenges, including possible sample damage induced by shock waves that are launched by preceding pulses in the sample-carrying jet. We explored this matter with an X-ray-pump/X-ray-probe experiment employing haemoglobin microcrystals transported via a liquid jet into the XFEL beam. Diffraction data were collected using a shock-wave-free single-pulse scheme as well as the dual-pulse pump-probe scheme. The latter, relative to the former, reveals significant degradation of crystal hit rate, diffraction resolution and data quality. Crystal structures extracted from the two data sets also differ. Since our pump-probe attributes were chosen to emulate EuXFEL operation at its 4.5 MHz maximum pulse rate, this prompts concern about such data collection.

Abstract:X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) deliver ultrabright X-ray pulses, but not the sequences of phase-coherent pulses required for time-domain interferometry and control of quantum states. For conventional split-and-delay schemes to produce such sequences, the challenge stems from extreme stability requirements when splitting Ångstrom wavelength beams, where the tiniest path-length differences introduce phase jitter. We describe an FEL mode based on selective electron-bunch degradation and transverse beam shaping in the accelerator, combined with a self-seeded photon emission scheme. Instead of splitting the photon pulses after their generation by the FEL, we split the electron bunch in the accelerator, prior to photon generation, to obtain phase-locked X-ray pulses with subfemtosecond duration. Time-domain interferometry becomes possible, enabling the concomitant program of classical and quantum optics experiments with X-rays. The scheme leads to scientific benefits of cutting-edge FELs with attosecond and/or high-repetition rate capabilities, ranging from the X-ray analog of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to damage-free measurements.

Abstract:The multipurpose diagnostic end‐station (DES) at the Materials Imaging and Dynamics (MID) instrument at the European X‐ray Free‐Electron Laser Facility (EuXFEL) is described in detail and some exemplary beam diagnostic results are provided. Among other features, the DES is a key tool for alignment and the integrated bent‐diamond crystal spectrometer enables pulse‐resolved spectral characterization of the EuXFEL X‐ray beam.The Materials Imaging and Dynamics (MID) instrument at the European X‐ray Free‐Electron Laser Facility (EuXFEL) is equipped with a multipurpose diagnostic end‐station (DES) at the end of the instrument. The imager unit in DES is a key tool for aligning the beam to a standard trajectory and for adjusting optical elements such as focusing lenses or the split‐and‐delay line. Furthermore, the DES features a bent‐diamond‐crystal spectrometer to disperse the spectrum of the direct beam to a line detector. This enables pulse‐resolved characterization of the EuXFEL spectrum to provide X‐ray energy calibration, and the spectrometer is particularly useful in commissioning special modes of the accelerator. Together with diamond‐based intensity monitors, the imager and spectrometer form the DES unit which also contains a heavy‐duty beamstop at the end of the MID instrument. Here, we describe the setup in detail and provide exemplary beam diagnostic results.

Abstract:The intersection of dynamic compression, high-rate material response and X-ray science has seen rapid growth, leading to the establishment of specialized end-stations at international facilities such as Linac Coherent Light Source LCLS (Matter at Extreme Conditions – MEC) and Advanced Photon Source APS (Dynamic Compression Sector – DCS), both USA. Although these facilities excel in working with X-rays tailored for small material volumes ( i.e. <1mm3 ), it needs a different approach to delve into subsequent processes. This is particularly the case in the transition from the micro- to mesoscale: here the ESRF distinguishes itself. The large beam size (several cm 2 ) of the ID19 beamline, in conjunction with a strong high energy component, source flux density, and outstanding imaging sensitivity, enables sub-surface visualization of engineering-scale structures as well as natural systems in representative volume, under high rate and shock. This is particularly valuable when studying materials with complex mesostructures and heterogeneities on relevant volumetric scales, which often dominate the dynamic material response. The study of the behavior of materials under dynamic loading presents a unique challenge due to inherently spanning over multiple lengths- and timescales. The evolution of sudden (thermo)mechanical excitation, starting from the lattice scale and progressing through grains, phase domains, and ultimately to structures, exhibits a spectrum of responses spanning from the microscopic to bulk length scales. Consequently, a diverse range of diagnostics as well as driver instrumentation is required to identify, study, and characterize this material response spectrum. This article shall introduce platforms available at beamline ID19 and underline their potential by selected showcase applications. Community access proposals such as the beamtime Block Allocation Group (BAG) allow for access in a routine manner.

Abstract:The realization of solution phase pump-probe diffraction experiments on bean-dine ID09B is described. The pink beam from a low-K in-vacuum undulator is used to study the structural dynamics of small molecules in solution to 100 picosecond time resolution and at atomic resolution. The X-ray chopper and the associated timing modes of the synchrotron are described. The dissociation of molecular iodine in liquid CCl4 is studied by single pulse diffraction. The data probe not only the iodine structures but also the solvent structure as the latter is thermally excited by the flow of energy from recombining iodine atoms. The low-q part of the diffraction spectra is a sensitive probe of the hydrodynamics of the solvent as a function of time.

Abstract:This review focuses on how short X-ray pulses from synchrotrons and XFELs can be used to track light-induced structural changes in molecular complexes and proteins via the pump–probe method. The upgrade of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility to a diffraction-limited storage ring, based on the seven-bend achromat lattice, and how it might boost future pump–probe experiments are described. We discuss some of the first X-ray experiments to achieve 100 ps time resolution, including the dissociation and in-cage recombination of diatomic molecules, as probed by wide-angle X-ray scattering, and the 3D filming of ligand transport in myoglobin, as probed by Laue diffraction. Finally, the use of femtosecond XFEL pulses to investigate primary chemical reactions, bond breakage and bond formation, isomerisation and electron transfer are discussed.

Abstract:Single crystal based optics is widely used at X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) facilities for beam tailoring. Here, we present recent developments in simulations of coherent X-ray wavefront propagation through crystals. In particular, the Laue case of dynamical diffraction has been implemented in Synchrotron Radiation Work- shop (SRW). Various effects due to wavefront transformation of short XFEL pulses have been simulated in the WavePropaGator (WPG) framework. Possible experimental observations of the effects are discussed.

Abstract:Beam splitters and delay lines are among the key building blocks of modern-day optical laser technologies. Progress in x-ray free electron laser source development and applications over the past decade is calling for their counter part operating in the Angstrom wavelength regime. Recent efforts in x-ray optics development have demonstrated relatively stable delay lines that most often adopted the division of wavefront approach for the beam splitting and recombination configuration. However, the two recombined beams have yet to achieve sufficient mutual coherence to enable applications such as interferometry, correlation spectroscopy, and nonlinear spectroscopy. We present the first experimental realization of the generation of highly mutually coherent pulse pairs using an amplitude-split delay line design based on transmission grating beam splitters and channel-cut crystal optic delay lines. The performance of the prototype system was analyzed in the context of x-ray coherent scattering and correlation spectroscopy, where we obtained nearly identical high-contrast speckle patterns from both branches. We show in addition the high level of dynamical stability during continuous delay scans, a capability essential for high sensitivity ultra-fast measurements.

Abstract:X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) utilize high-density and high-energy electron bunches which are well-suited to produce Compton back-scattering radiation. Here we study back-scattered radiation pulses produced by the interaction of XFEL electron beams and an optical laser. We discuss cost-effective setups to study such processes, taking advantage of the existing conventional as well as proposed XFEL infrastructure. We estimate parameters of possible experiments and compare them with other projects under construction.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FEL) in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and X-ray regime opened up the possibility for experiments at high power densities, in particular allowing for fluence-dependent absorption and scattering experiments to reveal non-linear light-matter interactions at ever shorter wavelengths. Findings of such non-linear effects in the XUV and X-ray regime are met with tremendous interest, but prove difficult to understand and model due to the inherent shot-to-shot fluctuations in photon intensity and the often structured, non-Gaussian spatial intensity profile of a focused FEL beam. Presently, the focused beam spot is characterized and optimized separately from the actual experiment. Here, we present the first simultaneous measurement of diffraction signals from solid samples in tandem with the corresponding single-shot spatial fluence distribution on the actual sample. This new in-situ characterization scheme enables fast and direct monitoring and thus control of the sample illumination which ultimately is necessary for a quantitative understanding of non-linear light-matter interaction in X-ray and XUV FEL experiments.

On the Influence of Parallax Effects in Thick Silicon Sensors in Coherent Diffraction Imaging

Abstract:Structure determination is a key application of XFELs and 4th generation synchrotron sources, particularly using the coherent and pulsed X-ray radiation from X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL). Scientific interest focuses on understanding the physical, biological, and chemical properties of samples at the nanometer scale. The X-rays from XFELs enable Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging (CXDI), where coherent X-rays irradiate a sample, and a far-field diffraction pattern is captured by an imaging detector. By the nature of the underlying physics, the resolution, at which the sample can be probed with the CXDI technique, is limited by the wavelength of the X-ray radiation and the exposure time if a detector can record the diffraction pattern to very large scattering angles. The resolution that can be achieved under real experimental conditions, depends strongly on additional parameters. The Shannon pixel size, linked to the detector resolution, the coherent dose that can be deposited in the sample without changing its structure, the image contrast, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the detected scattered radiation at high $q$, i.e. at high scattering angles $2\Theta$, have a strong influence on the resolution. The signal-to-noise ratio at high $q$ defines the "effective" maximum solid angle in a specific experiment setup up to which a detector can efficiently detect a signal and in consequence determines the achievable resolution. The image contrast defines how well bright image features can be distinguished from dark ones. We present the preliminary results of our study on the influence of the PSF on SNR, image contrast, position resolution, and achievable sample resolution for different pixel sizes.

Temporal X-ray Reconstruction using Temporal and Spectral Measurements at LCLS

Abstract:Transverse deflecting structures (TDS) are widely used in accelerator physics to measure the longitudinal density of particle bunches. When used in combination with a dispersive section, the whole longitudinal phase space density can be imaged. At the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the installation of such a device downstream of the undulators enables the reconstruction of the X-ray temporal intensity profile by comparing longitudinal phase space distributions with lasing on and lasing off. However, the resolution of this TDS is limited to around 1 fs rms (root mean square), and therefore, it is not possible to resolve single self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) spikes within one X-ray photon pulse. By combining the power spectrum from a high resolution photon spectrometer and the temporal structure from the TDS, the overall resolution is enhanced, thus allowing the observation of temporal, single SASE spikes. The combined data from the spectrometer and the TDS is analyzed using an iterative algorithm to obtain the actual intensity profile. In this paper, we present some improvements to the reconstruction algorithm as well as real data taken at LCLS.

Abstract:The intensity of single X-ray pulses from third generation synchrotrons like the ESRF, APS and Spring8 is now so high that it is feasible to conduct time resolved experiment with diffraction, scattering and spectroscopic techniques on samples ranging from small molecules to proteins, with 100 ps time resolution. This limit is dictated by the X-ray pulse length from a synchrotron. In a time-resolved X-ray experiment one first needs to initiate the process of interest in the sample and then open the X-ray shutter and record the signal as a function of time. In the experiments shown in this review, the signals are recorded on a large CCD detector in order to record the signal efficiently in space. Unfortunately, the time-resolution of current CCDs is still too slow, 100 μs at best, to be useful for monitoring molecular processes on molecular time scales. The only way to explore faster phenomena is to use the pump-probe method where the time resolution is obtained from varying the pump-probe delay. In the examples discussed here, the samples were excited by picosecond or nanosecond laser pulses and the excited samples were probed by 100 ps X-ray pulses from an undulator.
