Abstract:The application of magneto-biological effects in wastewater treatment has been brought under the spotlight recently. This work explored the dual effects of magnetic field (MF) and exogenous N-hexanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) on activated sludge granulation. Results showed that exposure to MF and C6-HSL obviously accelerated the aerobic granulation process and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances, especially polysaccharides, humic acid-like substances, aromatic proteins, and tryptophan-like substrates. Illumina MiSeq sequencing results indicated that the introduction of MF and C6-HSL can increase the diversity and richness of microbial community without antagonism, and the biological basis for rapid granulation process in this study was the enrichment of slow-growing bacteria Candidatus_Competibacter. Besides, the overgrowth of filamentous bacteria Thiothrix could be suppressed due to the presence of MF, improving the stabilities of aerobic granular sludge. This study provides a new understanding of the MF and C6-HSL effects on rapid aerobic granulation when treating the low-strength wastewater.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has been becoming a promising technology for the removal of nitrogenous contaminants from wastewater. In short-term batch tests, we observed the anaerobic ammonium oxidizing activity of anammox consortium increased as the magnetic field varied in the range of 16.8-95.0mT. A maximum 50% increase was obtained at the value of 75.0mT. In order to study long-term effect of magnetic field on anammox consortium, an anammox reactor with magnetic field of 60.0mT was operated in laboratory-scale. The results demonstrated that a significant 30% increase in maximum nitrogen removal rate and an approximate 1/4 saving in cultivation time were achieved by using the magnetic system. Microbiological composition analysis showed that bacterial diversity in the reactor decreased under magnetic-exposed condition. Nevertheless, some strains belonging to Planctomycetales were highly enriched. These findings indicated that the magnetic field was useful and reliable for fast start-up of anammox process since it was proved as a simple and convenient approach to enhance anaerobic ammonium oxidizing activity.
Separating and Characterizing Functional Nitrogen Degraders Via Magnetic-Nanoparticle Mediated Isolation Technology in High Concentration of Ammonia Nitrogen Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Magnetic-nanoparticle mediated isolation (MMI) is a new method for isolating active functional microbes from complex microorganisms without substrate labeling. In this study, the composition and properties of the magnetic nanoparticles （MNPs）were characterized by a number of techniques. And then the MNPs were added to activated sludge rich in ammonia nitrogen-degrading bacteria after long-term stable treatment, another set of experiments plus urea was set as the only carbon source in the system. Compared with the group without MNPs, degradation experiment results showed that the ammonia nitrogen degradation ability of a group of MNPs was slightly improved. The high-throughput sequencing results showed that the addition of MNPs did not change the microbial community structure of activated sludge under long-term stable conditions, and that the addition of urea as a nitrogen source significantly changed the microbial community structure. RDA analysis results also showed that Comamonadaceae_unclassified and Thiobacillus absolutely dominated in situ ammonia degradation, and the change in dominant genera showed the same trend as the degradation rate of ammonia nitrogen. It has also proved that the complex flora after adding magnetic nanoparticles is more adaptable to newly introduced pollutants, using MMI to study pollutant-degrading microorganisms under in-situ conditions has a broad application prospect.
Kinetic Characteristics and Microbial Community of Anammox-EGSB Reactor

Abstract:The present study reports kinetic characteristics of Anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactor after feeding with strong ammonium-containing synthetic wastewater. The microbial communities were analysed based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences. The results showed that the volumetric nitrogen loading rate (NLR) and volumetric nitrogen removal rate (NRR) reached up to 22.87 kg N/(m(3)d) and 18.65 kg N/(m(3)d), respectively, when the influent nitrogen concentrations were 1429.1mg N/L. Monod and Haldane models both proved to be suitable in characterizing the kinetic behavior of the reactor. Based on Haldane model, the relationships among the ammonium, nitrite, nitrogen conversion rates and substrate concentrations were established with corresponding correlation coefficients of 0.992, 0.993 and 0.993, respectively. The maximum ammonium, nitrite and nitrogen conversion rates (q(max)) by the granular sludge were 381.2, 304.7 and 731.7 mg N/(gVSSd), half saturation constants (K(s)) were 36.75, 0.657 and 29.26 mg N/L and inhibition constants (K(i)) were 887.1, 13,942.1 and 1779.6 mg N/L, respectively. Anammox-EGSB reactor was found tolerant to substrate and capable of treating strong ammonium-containing wastewater. The dominant microbial population of the granular sludge in the reactor was Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis.
Low-intensity electromagnetic field as a new engineering oriented bioaugmentation strategy for anammox granules

Abstract:Improving the relative abundance of bacteria and their activity is still the basis for the efficient operation of anammox process. Here, biomagnetic effect was used to promote anammox granules. Batch test results show that the application of an electromagnetic field (EMF) with a strength of 0.09 μT increased the nitrogen removal performance of anammox by 32.44% while higher strength EMF of 0.20 and 0.25 μT inhibited the activity of anammox bacteria. Long-term experiment indicated that the addition of EMF with a strength of 0.09 μT greatly improved nitrogen removal performance of the granular sludge, especially the total nitrogen removal performance increased by 15.3%. After 120 days of reactor operation, the nitrogen loading rate was increased to 6.4 kg N/m 3 /d, and the total nitrogen removal rate of the reactors with and without EMF addition reached 4.92 kg N/m 3 /d and 4.25 kg N/m 3 /d, respectively. Throughout the experiment, the removal rate of NH 4 + -N and NO 2 − -N of anammox reactor with 0.09 μT EMT addition was always higher than that without EMF addition. The high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the proportion of Candidatus Brocadia in reactors with and without EMF addition were 21.3% and 15.8%, respectively. The application of EMF with an intensity of 0.09 μT increased the relative abundance of the main anammox bacteria. 70 kos were enriched under EMF conditions, including ko00780 (Biotin metabolism), ko00540 (Lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis), ko00590 (Arachidonic acid metabolism). 51 kos like ko03030 (DNA replication) decreased after EMF addition. This study demonstrates the feasibility of EMF to promote anammox and expands the application of EMF in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) has received considerable attention as an emerging sustainable process for wastewater treatment, whereas achieving rapid granulation is still challenging. Herein, we applied a static magnetic field (5 mT) to accelerate MBGS granulation in photo-sequencing batch reactors (PSBRs). Results showed that complete granulation of MBGS in the reactor with magnetic field (RM) was achieved 20 days before that in the control reactor (RC). The magnetic field significantly promoted microbial growth, sludge settleability and granule density. The treatment performance for COD (84.1 %–96.7 %), ammonium (91.7 %–100 %) and phosphorus (71.5 %–83.3 %) was efficient and similar in both reactors. However, the volumetric removal rate for total nitrogen (TN) was greatly improved by magnetic field due to increased nitrogen assimilation and denitrification. Moreover, mature MBGS in RM showed higher specific oxygen production rate (SOPR) and specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR), approximately 90 % and 16 % greater than those in RC. The accumulation of metal ions (iron and calcium), the enhanced production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS, especially proteins (PN)), and the enrichment of functional bacteria (EPS producers and potential denitrifiers) and phototrophs (Tetradesmus, Monoraphidium and Desmodesmus) contributed to rapid granulation and better performance of MBGS. This study provides an economic, effective and environmental-friendly method for rapid cultivation of MBGS, which would be helpful for large scale applications of MBGS.

Abstract:The nitrogen pollution has caused serious environmental problems. The main aims of the present study were to remove the nitrogen from wastewater through ANAMMOX (ANaerobic AMMonium OXidation) process, and let the effluent meet the discharge standard which was significant and advance in the field of ANAMMOX application which was also very important to the environmental protection and water recycling. This study reports the performance of ANAMMOX-EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactor after feeding with synthetic wastewater. The results showed that the effluent ammonium concentration was 11.90mgN/L and the nitrogen remove efficiency (NRE) reached up to 94.68% when the volumetric nitrogen loading rate (NLR) and volumetric nitrogen removal rate (NRR) were as high as 27.31 and 25.86kgN/(m3·d), respectively. The effluent ammonium concentration meets the Chinese integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996) in which the ammonium concentration should be lower than 15mgN/L. The maximum ammonium, nitrite and nitrogen conversion rates (qmax) by the ANAMMOX granular sludge in the reactor were 907.13, 841.76, 1810.10mgN/(g VSS·d) and half saturation constants (KS) were 2.69, 0.44, 3.11mgN/L, respectively.
Successful operation performance and syntrophic micro-granule in partial nitritation and anammox reactor treating low-strength ammonia wastewater

Abstract:The stable operation of the partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) process is a challenge in the treatment of low-strength ammonia wastewater like sewage mainstream. This study demonstrated the feasibility of achieving stable operation in the treatment of 50 mg/L ammonia wastewater with a micro granule-based PN/A reactor. The long-term operation results showed nitrogen removal efficiencies of 71.8 ± 9.9% were stably obtained under a relatively short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h. The analysis on the physicochemical properties of the granules indicated most of the granules were in a size in a range of 265-536 μm, and the elementary composition of the granules was determined to be CH1.61O0.61N0.17S0.01P0.03. The microbial analysis revealed Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis anammox bacteria and Nitrosomonas-like AOB were the two most dominant bacteria with 27.6% and 10.5% abundance, respectively, both of which formed spatially syntrophic co-immobilization within the micro-granules. The ex-situ activity tests showed the activity of NOB was well limited through DO regulation in the reactor. These results provide an alternative PN/A process configuration for low-strength wastewater treatment by sustaining microstate granules. Optimization of the nitrogen sludge loading rate and DO regulation are important for the successful performance.

Response of methanogenic granules enhanced by magnetite to ammonia stress

Abstract:Excessive ammonia has an inhibitory effect on anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) when treating industrial wastewater with high concentration of ammonia and organic matters. The addition of conductive materials has been widely reported to improve the AnGS activity, which has the potential to alleviate the ammonia inhibition. In this study, the addition of magnetite was carried out to enhance the activity of AnGS in UASB reactor, then the response of AnGS to different ammonia levels was investigated. Results showed that magnetite facilitated the enrichment of Methanosaeta and Clostridium sensu stricto 1. Under the ammonia stress (up to 5 g TAN/L), it was interesting that Methanosaeta was better retained (abundance of 45.8%), and the abundance of ammonia-resistant Clostridium sensu stricto 1 increased to 34.3% in presence of magnetite. RT-qPCR analysis revealed that Methanosaeta could maintain metabolically active for counteracting the ammonia inhibition along with the higher transcription of genes encoding for CO2-dependent pathway. The electron transport activity and ATP content of AnGS were 1.25-2.12 and 1.23-2.56 folds higher than those in the control group, respectively. In addition, the AnGS could maintain the stability of structure because Methanosaeta was the skeleton of AnGS. As a result, the analysis of enzyme activity showed that the overall methanogenic metabolism was more active, thus ensured the effective operation of UASB reactor. This study provided the scientific understanding about the role of magnetite to alleviate the ammonia inhibition, and had important implications for stable treatment and recycling of industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been widely applied in the treatment of high-strength nitrogen wastewaters. However, few engineering practices were reported to treat low-strength nitrogen wastewaters. In this study, three types of anammox granular sludge (GS) were separately collected from the expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors treating nitrogen wastewaters at high (H-), moderate (M-) and low (L-) nitrogen loading rates (NLRs), and employed for the treatment of low-strength nitrogen wastewater in sequencing batch advanced nitrogen removal (ANR) systems. The ANR system with M-GS (namely M-ANR system) was most useful. At the initial biomass concentration of 2.43 g-VSS·L-1, cycle length of 8 h and influent total nitrogen (TN) concentration of less than 15 mg·L-1, the performance data were as follows: effluent TN of less than 1 mg·L-1, TN removal efficiency of more than 92.8%, the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 0.039 kg-N·m-3·d-1. The efficient performance lasted as long as 46 cycles, indicating the sustainability of the M-ANR system. The advanced microscopic analysis and metagenomic analysis were applied to reveal the successful but non-permanent treatment by the M-ANR system. The long-time lag between biomass decay and sludge activity decay provided a window period for the good performance of M-ANR system. However, the weak support of oligotrophic habitat for anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria community was doomed to the degradation of anammox GS, resulting in gradual loss of their activities. A periodic addition of fresh M-GS or a periodic rejuvenation cultivation in the eutrophic habitat is necessary to achieve a permanent performance.

Abstract:The biological denitrification of high-nitrate wastewater (HNW) is primarily hindered by insufficient carbon sources and excessive nitrite accumulation. In this study, micromagnetic carriers with varying micromagnetic field (MMF) strengths (0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 mT) were employed to enhance the denitrification of HNW using waste molasses (WMs) as a carbon source. The results revealed that 0.6 mT MMF significantly improved the total nitrogen removal (TN) efficiency at 96.3%. A high nitrate (NO3 -N) removal efficiency at 99.3% with a low nitrite (NO2  -N) accumulation at 25.5 mg/L was achieved at 0.6 mT MMF. The application of MMF facilitated the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and stimulated denitrifying enzymes (e.g., nitrate reductase (NAR), nitrite reductase (NIR), and nitric oxide reductase (NOR)), which thereby promoting denitrification. Moreover, the effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), tryptophan and fulvic-like substances exhibited their lowest levels at 0.6 mT MMF. Analysis through 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene sequencing indicated a significant enrichment of denitrifying bacteria including Castellaniella Klebsiella under the influence of MMF. Besides, the proliferation of Acholeplasma, Klebsiella and Proteiniphilum at 0.6 mT MMF promoted the hydrolysis and acidification of WMs. This study offers new insights into the enhanced utilization of WMs and the denitrification of HNW through the application of MMF.
Use of aerobic granules for treating synthetic high-strength ammonium wastewaters.

Abstract:In this work, two identical sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) with mature aerobic granules were utilized to treat synthetic high-strength ammonium wastewaters with chemical oxygen demand (COD)/total nitrogen (TN) ratios of 3.9-6.9. The contributions of various mechanisms to the removal of ammonium were determined. Ammonium levels of 600-2000mg-Nl(-1) had little adverse effect on the COD removal rate (91.6%-95.3%) with an influent COD of 4490-9860mgl(-1). The TN removal rate was slightly reduced from 71.3% to 59.6% as the influent ammonium concentration was increased from 600 to 2000mg-Nl(-1). Experimental results indicated that aerobic granules removed 94.5% of COD and 59.6% of TN in the treatment of synthetic high-strength wastewater (9860mg-CODl(-1) and 2000mg -Nl(-1)) during a 12h cycle. Granular adsorption, air stripping and conversion by nitrification/denitrification were responsible for removing 9%, 15% and 76%, respectively, of the total removed -N. Dissolved oxygen (DO) was a useful process indicator of the biological reactions in the treatment of high-level ammonium wastewaters.
Enhancing Anammox Nitrogen Removal by Static Magnetic Field Exposure: Performance, Microbial Community and Symbiotic Relationship Analysis

Abstract:Anammox batch reactors were operated with different static magnetic field (SMF) intensities (0 mT, 40 mT, and 100 mT). The impacts of SMF and the influent nitrogen concentration on nitrogen removal were analyzed. Sludge characteristics, microbial community structure, and metabolism pathways were explored. The results show that a high nitrogen load greatly decreased the nitrogen removal efficiency. Still, applying SMF with appropriate intensity enhanced the nitrogen removal performance, especially under high nitrogen loading conditions. Systems with 40 mT SMF at normal nitrogen loading conditions had the highest total nitrogen removal efficiency. In contrast, a higher SMF intensity was conducive to the anammox process with a high nitrogen load. Candidatus Kuenenia was fast enriched under high nitrogen loading conditions in the control systems. However, Candidatus Brocadia was more abundant than Ca. Kuenenia in the systems with SMF application. SMF was the main factor affecting the microbial metabolism, enhancing the metabolic pathways related to bacterial growth and resistance to environmental stress. The metabolic interactions between the anammox bacteria and other bacteria were enhanced by applying SMF to the anammox process, especially for the cross-feeding of cofactors and vitamins in the anammox consortia.
Aerobic granular sludge for high-strength ammonium wastewater treatment: Effect of COD/N ratios, long-term stability and nitrogen removal pathways

Abstract:Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) technology is increasingly considered for wastewater treatment. AGS stability particularly under lower COD/N ratios is an impediment for AGS technology. This study evaluated AGS stability and nitrogen removal at different loading rates of 0.03 to 4 kg NH4+-N m-3 d-1 and COD/N ratios of 18.3 to 0.13. Ammoniacal and total nitrogen removals were high at 99.9% and 99.3%, respectively, during 440 days. MiSeq sequencing revealed a reduction in bacterial diversity and enrichment of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), anammox and denitrifying bacteria. Quantitative PCR showed enrichment of AOB, anammox bacteria, Nitrospira and denitrifiers. Chemical data and bacterial community supported occurrence of nitritation and anammox pathways. AGS had stable granular structure with excellent settling properties at lower COD/N≤ 1. Removal of high-strength ammonium could be partly explained by the existing nitrogen pathways suggesting novel mechanisms. Nevertheless, results presented here support implementation of AGS process for ammonium wastewaters.

Weak Magnetic Field Promotes Denitrification by Stimulating Ferromagnetic Ion-Containing Metalloprotein Expression

Abstract:Weak magnetic field (WMF) has been recognized to promote biological denitrification processes; however, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored, hindering the optimization of its effectiveness. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of WMF on denitrification performance, enzyme activity, microbial community, and metaproteome in packed bed bioreactors treating high nitrate wastewater under different WMF intensities and C:N ratios. Results showed that WMFs significantly promoted denitrification by consistently stimulating the activities of denitrifying reductases and NAD+/NADH biosynthesis across decreasing C:N ratios. Reductases and electron transfer enzymes involved in denitrification were overproduced due to the significantly enriched overexpression of ferromagnetic ion-containing (FIC) metalloproteins. We also observed WMFs’ intensity-dependent selective pressure on microbial community structures despite the effects being limited compared to those caused by changing C:N ratios. By coupling genome-centric metaproteomics and structure prediction, we found the dominant denitrifier, Halomonas, was outcompeted by Pseudomonas and Azoarcus under WMFs, likely due to its structural deficiencies in iron uptake, suggesting that advantageous ferromagnetic ion acquisition capacity was necessary to satisfy the substrate demand for FIC metalloprotein overproduction. This study advances our understanding of the biomagnetic effects in the context of complex communities and highlights WMF's potential for manipulating FIC protein-associated metabolism and fine-tuning community structure.
Enhancement on the Ammonia Oxidation Capacity of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaeon Originated from Wastewater: Utilizing Low-Density Static Magnetic Field

Abstract:Ammonia-oxidizing archaeon (AOA) could play important roles for nitrogen removal in the bioreactors under conditions such as low pH and low dissolved oxygen. Therefore, enhancing ammonia oxidation capability of AOA has great significance for water and wastewater treatment, especially under conditions like low dissolved oxygen concentration. Utilizing a novel AOA strain SAT1, which was enriched from a wastewater treatment plant by our group, the effect of magnetic field on AOA’ s ammonia oxidation capability, its magnetotaxis and heredity were investigated in this study. Compared with control experiment, AOA’ s maximum nitrite-N formation rate during the cultivation increased by 56.8% (0.65 mgN/(L$d)) with 20 mT magnetic field. Also, it was testified that AOA possessed a certain magnetotaxis. However, results manifested that the enhancement of AOA’s ammonia oxidation capability was not heritable, that is, lost once the magnetic field was removed. Additionally, the possible mechanism of improving AOA’s ammonia oxidation capability by magnetic field was owing to the promotion of AOA single cells’ growth and fission, rather than the enhancement of their ammonia oxidation rates. The results shed light on the application of AOA and methods to enhance AOA’s ammonia oxidation capability, especially in wastewater treatment processes under certain conditions.

Abstract:Waste molasses, the abundant byproducts of the sugar industry, is a cost-efficient carbon source for advanced denitrification. However, the efficiency of waste molasses-driven denitrification is limited by its complex carbon content, hindering its practical application. Weak magnetic field (WMF) is reported to enhance biological nitrogen removal, but its effects on molasses-driven denitrification remains unknown. This study investigated whether the WMF can enhance waste molasses-driven nitrogen removal and explore the underlying mechanisms. It was found that WMF significantly facilitated waste molasses-driven denitrification, with total nitrogen removal efficiency increased by 1.25 times (from 77% to 96%). WMF stimulated the nitrate reductase's activity by 7-18%, and the enhancement was improved as WMF intensified. Quantitative qPCR analysis indicated that the abundances of denitrifying enzymes increased under WMF, which was consistent with the proliferation of denitrifying bacteria Denitratisoma and Devosia. This study has demonstrated that WMF is promising for enhancing complex carbon-driven denitrification processes.
The role of magnetite (Fe3O4) particles for enhancing the performance and granulation of anammox

Abstract:In this study, two lab-scale sequencing batch reactors each with an effective volume of 2.3 L were operated as C-AMX (no carrier addition) and M-AMX (magnetite carrier added) for 147 days with synthetic wastewater at an NLR range of 0.19-0.47 kgN/m3/d. The long-term effect of magnetite on the granulation and performance of anammox bacteria in terms of nitrogen removal and other essential parameters were confirmed. In phase I (1-24 days), M-AMX took approximately 12 days to obtain a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) above 80 % of the initial input nitrogen. Although free nitrous acid inhibited the reactor at a high concentration at the onset of phase III, the NRR of M-AMX recovered about 3.7 times faster than that of C-AMX. In addition, it was confirmed that the M-AMX granules had a dense and compact structure compared to C-AMX, and the presence of the carrier promoted the development of these resilient granules. While the measured microbial stress gradually increased in C-AMX reactor, a vice versa was observed in the M-AMX reactor as granulation proceeded. Compared to other alternative iron-based carrier particles, the stable crystal structure of magnetite as a carrier created a mechanism where filamentous bacteria groups were repelled from the granulation hence the microbial stress in the M-AMX in the final phase was 61.54 % lower than that in the C-AMX. The iron rich environment created by the magnetite addition led to Ignavibacteria, (a Feammox bacteria) increasing significantly in the M-AMX bioreactor.

Abstract:The advanced nitrogen removal of MWTPs effluent under low temperature is inhibited because of reduction of the microbial activity. Packed bed reactors filled with different magnetic carriers (0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 mT) were constructed to enhance the advanced nitrogen removal under low temperature (5 ℃). The results showed that 0.3 and 0.9 mT carriers significantly improved the denitrification performance, indicating the “window” effect. Total nitrogen removals were increased by 6.96% and 8.25%, and accumulation of NO2- decreased by 25.70% and 13.90% in 0.3 and 0.9 mT reactors, respectively. Analysis of electron transport chain revealed that 0.3 mT carrier significantly increased the abundance of compound III by 13.88% and 0.9 mT carrier improved the abundance of cytC by 11.21%. Similar microbial community shifts in 0.3 and 0.9 mT reactors contributed to the denitrification performance. Overall, weak magnetic carriers can be a novel strategy to enhance advanced nitrogen removal under low temperature.
Enhancement of Static Magnetic Field on Nitrogen Removal at Different Ammonium Concentrations in a Sequencing Batch Reactor: Performance and Biological Mechanism

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects and biological mechanism of external static magnetic fields (SMFs) on enhancing nitrogen removal at different influent ammonium nitrogen (NH4+) concentrations. Four sequential batch reactors (SBRs) with SMFs of 0, 15, 30, and 50 mT were operated continuously for 196 days, during which the influent NH4+-N concentration increased stepwise as 50, 100, 350, and 600 mg L-1. The results showed that 50 mT had optimum effects on enhancing nitrogen removal, especially at high NH4+-N concentrations (350 and 600 mg L-1). The biological mechanism by which SMF influences nitrogen removal varies depending on the NH4+ concentration. At low NH4+-N concentrations (50 and 100 mg L-1), a field of 50 mT increased key enzyme activities and corresponding functional gene abundances. Additionally, it further improved functional bacterial abundances, which involved nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria at high NH4+ concentrations. These findings could provide guidance for the selection of optimum SMF intensity at different influent NH4+ concentrations. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
