Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a chemolithotrophic bioprocess which has been widely applied in the treatment of different concentrations of ammonium-containing wastewaters. However, there is less attention on the problem that the instantaneous growth rate (or metabolic rate) and equilibrium growth rate were un-synchronous for anammox bacteria due to their long generation time and self-immobilization of the granular sludge which could lead to the inaccurate estimation. In this study, the anammox process was firstly divided to four typical feast-famine (starvation, satiation, tolerance and poison) states based on the combination of both off-site and in-situ anammox reaction kinetics. Then, four respective lab-scale bioreactors were operated at each state for over a year to achieve stable anammox performance. The results showed that the nitrogen removal rates of bioreactors were 0.53, 2.24, 9.30 and 12.96 kg N/(m(3).d); and the specific anammox activities of granular sludge were 188.94 (48%), 313.29 (79%), 397.50 (100%) and 198.60 (50%) mg N/(g VSS.d) which could reflect the reactivity of each feast-famine state. The stable microbial communities of bioreactors were cultured and analyzed, whose species diversity went down with the decrease of Shannon and ACE index. The relative abundance of anammox bacteria increased from 11% to 57% from starvation to poison state. Candidatus Brocadia/Nitrospira, Candidatus Kuenenia and Brocadiaceae unclassified were revealed to be the distinctive functional bacteria, which could serve as the indicator of each state. The setting up of the typical feast-famine states could be regarded as the landmark to help the design, control and optimization of anammox process.

Abstract:The inorganic nitrogen concentrations in full-scale anaerobic digestion plants always vary seasonally, challenging the removal stability of microalgal-bacterial consortia in treating piggery digestate. Using a continuous photobioreactor, this study revealed the evolution of bacterial community under inorganic nitrogen fluctuations with influent nitrate loading ranged from 11 to 90 mg-N L-1 and influent ammonium loading ranged from 130 to 550 mg-N L-1. The loading of gradient nitrogen concentrations demonstrated that the optimal removal rate of total inorganic nitrogen was 45.62 mg-N L-1 d-1 along with the total chlorophyll concertation of 19.27 mg L-1, when introducing 240 mg-N L-1 of ammonium and 11 mg-N L-1 of nitrate. High throughput sequencing indicated that the dominant community members for nitrogen removal were shifted from prokaryotic algae to nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, with nitrate being changed to ammonium. With the increasing influent ammonium loading, the suspended microalgal bacterial consortia gradually changed to microalgal bacterial biofilm, which was attributed to the biofilm-producing prokaryotes Thauera Comamona and Arenimonas. Co occurrence network analyses illustrated that more functional bacterial modules were formed under ammonium fluctuation. Further correlation test identified influent ammonium loading as the important functional parameter shaping the bacterial community. Overall, this study expands our understanding of the homeostasis in microalgal-bacterial system in the cleaner production of piggery digestate.
Diversity of Ammonium-Oxidizing Bacteria in A Granular Sludge Anaerobic Ammonium-Oxidizing (anammox) Reactor

Abstract:The ammonium-oxidizing microbial community was investigated in a granular sludge anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) reactor that was operated for about 1 year with high anaerobic ammonium oxidation activity (up to 0.8 kg NH4+-N m(-3) day(-1)). A Planctomycetales-specific 16S rRNA gene library was constructed to analyse the diversity of the anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB). Most of the specifically amplified sequences (15/16) were similar to each other (> 99%) but were distantly related to all of the previously recognized sequences (< 94%), with the exception of an unclassified anammox-related clone, KSU-1 (98%). An ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) gene library was also analysed to investigate the diversity of 'aerobic' ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) from the beta-Proteobacteria. Most of the amoA gene fragments (53/55) clustered in the Nitrosomonas europaea-Nitrosococcus mobilis group which has been reported to prevail under oxygen-limiting conditions. The quantitative results from real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification showed that the dominant AnAOB comprised approximately 50% of the total bacterial 16S rRNA genes in the reactor, whereas the AAOB of beta-Proteobacteria represented only about 3%. A large fragment (4008 bp) of the rRNA gene cluster of the dominant AnAOB (AS-1) in this reactor sludge was sequenced and compared with sequences of other Planctomycetales including four anammox-related candidate genera. The partial sequence of hydrazine-oxidizing enzyme (hzo) of dominant AnAOB was also identified using new designed primers. Based on this analysis, we propose to tentatively name this new AnAOB Candidatus 'Jettenia asiatica'.

Abstract:An anaerobic ammonium-oxidation (anammox) reactor was operated for more than 500 days and the anammox activity of the biomass in the reactor reached 0.58kg Ntotal/kg VSSd. The removal ratios of NO2−-N to NH4+-N in both reactor and activity tests were nearly 1.1. The bacterial diversity in the reactor was investigated by analysis of 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The analysis showed that more than half of the clones in the library were affiliated to recognized filamentous bacteria. The previously recognized anammox bacterium (AnAOB) Candidatus Kuenenia stuttgartiensis was only detected by using a Planctomycetes-specific 16S rRNA gene primer set. However, at least two different types of AnAOB were detected by the primer set targeting the hydrazine-oxidizing enzyme gene (hzo). The aerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AAOB) Nitrosomonas europaea–eutropha group, which is widely detected in oxygen-limited environments, was also found in this reactor. The result of qPCR indicated that AnAOB comprised 16% of the community population while AAOB comprised less than 1% in the reactor.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a new and promising biological nitrogen removal technology. It is a burning issue due to its high-rate and cost-effectiveness for nitrogen removal from wastewater. However,Anammox bacteria presents a very long doubling time and low cellular yield,and is susceptible to environmental conditions. Therefore,it is necessary to take careful methods to cultivate Anammox biomass. Based on the characteristics of the Anammox enrichment and the seeding sludge sources,the enrichment techniques are introduced and discussed in this paper. It is proposed that the enrichment course of Anammox culture can be accelerated with useful controlling and enhancing strategies.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process is regarded as a promising nitrogen removal technology to treat ammonium wastewaters in a wide concentration range. Oligotrophic anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (O-AnAOB) culture has been successfully achieved from a new anammox system to treat superlow ammonium concentration wastewaters. In this work, the O-AnAOB culture was compared with the eutrophic AnAOB (E-AnAOB) culture to reveal its physiological, morphological, and ecological features. Results showed that the specific anammox activity (SAA) of O-AnAOB culture was 0.07 kgN/(kgVSS·d) with the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 0.20 kgN/ (m3 d) in the reactor, while the SAA of E-AnAOB culture was 2.11 kgN/(kgVSS·d) with the NRR of 11.10 kgN/(m3 d). The hzs gene transcription levels (hzs-mRNA) of O-AnAOB and E-AnAOB cultures were 1.32 × 109 copies/gVSS and 1.51 × 1010 copies/gVSS, respectively. Morphologically, the O-AnAOB culture took on the unique brown color rather than the typical red color of E-AnAOB. The O-AnAOB cells lived in a disperse pattern in the culture. The cells were seriously deformed with deep craters on the cell wall. The size of anammoxsome and paryphoplasm compartments inside the O-AnAOB cells was smaller than that inside the E-AnAOB cells. Ecologically, the O-AnAOB culture had special microbial community with a higher bacterial diversity than the E-AnAOB. The most dominant genera in O-AnAOB were Anaerolineaceae (33.7%, fermentative bacteria), Candidatus Kuenenia (17.4%, anammox bacteria), and Nitrospira (7.3%, nitrite oxidizing bacteria). This study provided an insight into the new anammox process for deep nitrogen removal from wastewaters.

Abstract:Vigorous anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) activity was realized by seeding with diverse sludge contents. Granules taken from a 2-year old methanogenic reactor loaded with high organic and methanol contents were used as inoculum to enrich anammox biomass in a 1.1L upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. Anammox activity appeared after an operation of 83d resulting in the final nitrogen removal rate of 11.7kgNm−3d−1 with the efficient granulation of anammox sludge. The analysis based on 16S rDNA sequencing confirmed that Candidatus “Brocadia” was the dominant population in the enriched biomass.

Abstract:In this study, the microbial community structure was assessed in an anaerobic ammonium oxidation–upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (ANAMMOX-UASB) reactor treating high-strength wastewater (approximately 700 mg N L−1 in total nitrogen) by employing Illumina high-throughput sequencing analysis. The reactor was started up and reached a steady state in 26 days by seeding mature ANAMMOX granules, and a high nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 2.96 kg N m−3 day−1 was obtained at 13.2∼17.6 °C. Results revealed that the abundance of ANAMMOX bacteria increased during the operation, though it occupied a low proportion in the system. The phylum Planctomycetes was only 8.39 % on day 148 and Candidatus Brocadia was identified as the dominant ANAMMOX species with a percentage of 2.70 %. The phylum of Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria constituted a percentage up to 70 % in the community, of which the Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes were likely to be related to the sludge granulation. In addition, it was found that heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria of Denitratisoma belonging to Proteobacteria phylum occupied a large proportion (22.1∼23.58 %), which was likely caused by the bacteria lysis and decay with the internal carbon source production. The SEM images also showed that plenty of other microorganisms existed in the ANAMMOX-UASB reactor.

Enrichment and characterization of Anammox bacteria in a non-woven membrane reactor

Abstract:Abstract An upflow column reactor packed with nonwoven fabric carrier was used to enrich anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) sludge. After 101 days, the reactor Anammox sludge concentration increased from 470 to 3,118 mg·L−1. In the stable operating stage, the average total nitrogen (TN) volume loading rate was 818.3 mg·L−1, and the maximum removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, NO2−-N and TN were 65.9, 81.2 and 63.8%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the cultivated sludge was dominated by a mix of short rod-shaped and spherical bacteria, which accumulated to the typical cauliflower-like aggregates assumed to be the Anammox culture. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis using 16S rRNA showed that the dominant population developed in the reactor when hybridized with both PLA46 and Amx820 gene probes. This indicates that the cultivated biomass may comprise Planctomycetes bacteria. The results of real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) showed that these bacteria formed 45 to 60% of the total bacteria in the Anammox sludge. The study demonstrated successful detection and enrichment of Anammox bacteria in wastewater.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is not only an important part of the global nitrogen cycle,but also a vital foundation of new biological nitrogen removal technologies for wastewater treatment and environmental bioremediation.As the biocatalyst of anammox process,anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) attract increasing attention in the fields of microbiology,environmental engineering,and geoscience with extensive research in recent years.In this study,we reviewed the newest research advance on taxonomy,characteristics,and biotechniques used for the analysis of AnAOB.In all,6 genera containing 21 AnAOB species have been identified based on the polyphasic taxonomy by using the genotypic group-dividing method;this includes the newly discovered genus Candidatus Anammoximicrobium.Some studied species were further compared to identify the similarities and differences between their morphological,cellular components,physiological,and ecological characteristics;they were found to have different sensitivities to environmental factors such as temperature,salinity,and organic matter,which caused niche divergence among them.These species were favorable for application to environmental engineering.In addition,a series of advanced molecular biotechniques such as polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis,fluorescence in situ hybridization,and quantitative polymerase chain reaction have been successfully applied to assess species clarification,community distribution,microbial activity,and cell numbers of AnAOB.Moreover,many specific primers for AnAOB 16S rRNA or functional genes (hzo,nirS) have been developed.Furthermore,some important topics and obstacles for further research,i.e.,obtaining purified AnAOB,elucidating metabolic pathways and genetic features of AnAOB,clarifying the ecological contribution of AnAOB in the environment,were proposed.The findings of this study might provide valuable information for both anammox process and AnAOB researches.
Effects of different substrate ratios on the enrichment of anammox bacteria at low substrate concentration

Abstract:Anammox bacteria (AnAOB) can be easily enriched under high temperatures and high substrate concentrations, while the application of the mainstream anammox process in low substrate municipal sewage is still relatively uncommon. Therefore, this study investigated the enrichment of AnAOB under conditions of low ammonia nitrogen and nitrite concentration at 25 °C. Results showed that using inoculated aerobic sludge, four ASBRs (R1, R2, R3 and R4) were successfully initiated with different influent substrate (NO 2 - -N/NH 4 + -N) ratios of 1.2, 1.32, 1.4 and 1.5, respectively, with reactor start-up times were 162, 150, 120 and 134 days, respectively. The values of ΔNO 2 - -N/ΔNH 4 + -N in reactors were stable at 1.17, 1.32, 1.43 and 1.53 respectively. The increase in influent substrate ratios resulted in improved TN removal rates and accelerated consumption of chemical oxygen demand (COD) during the initial start-up stage. The maximum TN removal rates achieved in the four reactors were 76.09%, 79.24%, 82.82% and 82.63%, respectively. The color of sludge gradually changes from yellowish-brown to reddish-brown. Furthermore, the surface of sludge exhibited a porous mineral structure, with crater-like cavities. The dominant anammox species in the system was identified as Candida Brocadia (3.04%). According to qPCR, the abundance of hzsB in the system is 1.65×10 12 copies/g VSS, confirming the effective enrichment of AnAOB.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) are difficult to cultivate due to their long start-up time and sensitivity to environmental conditions. In this study, anammox granular sludge was cultured with ordinary activated sludge under influent dissolved oxygen concentrations of 6–8 mg/L, successfully enriching AnAOB. The presence of multiple microorganisms in the activated sludge enabled the anammox system to resist the unfavorable influent environment and sustain system stability. The total nitrogen removal rate reached a maximum of 81%, and the TN effective load increased from 0.1 to 1.5 kg N/m3/d. The results showed that the dissolved oxygen present in the influent did not lead to a breakdown in the anammox system. The protein in the sludge extracellular polymeric substances played an important role in the enrichment of AnAOB, and the sludge settling performance at the bottom of the reactor was better than that at the top of the reactor, with protein/polysaccharide in the range of 5–6.3. Candidatus brocadia and Candidatus kuenenia were the main anammox functional bacteria in the system. On 153 d of reactor operation, their relative abundances were 8.51 and 5.68%, respectively. This study shows that microorganisms in activated sludge contribute to the stability of the anammox system when the influent conditions are appropriate. This provides a new idea for the rapid start-up of the anammox system and enrichment of AnAOB.

Abstract:This study describes the enrichment of anammox bacteria in a column simulating oxygen limited flooded paddy soils, which are important man-made ecosystems that receive substantial amounts of fixed nitrogen. The upper 50cm of the paddy soil, containing a high amount of ammonium [1.610.4mmolNkg(dry weight)1], was selected as the inoculum for anammox enrichment. After 18 months of incubation with freshwater from the paddy soil ecosystem, the enrichment culture consumed approximately 4mmolammoniuml1day1 and 5mmolnitritel1day1. The maximum specific anammox activity of the culture was 35.7molNg(dry weight)1h1. Fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that anammox cells constituted 50%+/- 10% of the enrichment culture. The phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA and the diagnostic hydrazine synthase (hzsA) genes showed that two dominant anammox species were enriched from paddy soil. The enriched CandidatusAnammoxoglobus-like organisms showed a 16S rRNA gene similarity of 97.599.2% to CandidatusAnammoxoglobus propionicus and the CandidatusJettenia-like organisms showed 92.193.1% 16S rRNA gene identity to CandidatusJettenia asiatica. Real-time quantitative PCR of hzsA gene suggested that up to 1010copiesg(dry weight)1 of soil anammox bacteria were present in the enrichment culture.
New Anaerobic, Ammonium-Oxidizing Community Enriched from Peat Soil

Abstract:ABSTRACT Anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria have been recognized as an important sink for fixed nitrogen and are detected in many natural environments. However, their presence in terrestrial ecosystems has long been overlooked, and their contribution to the nitrogen cycling in natural and agricultural soils is currently unknown. Here we describe the enrichment and characterization of anammox bacteria from a nitrogen-loaded peat soil. After 8 months of incubation with the natural surface water of the sampling site and increasing ammonium and nitrite concentrations, anammox cells constituted 40 to 50% of the enrichment culture. The two dominant anammox phylotypes were affiliated with “Candidatus Jettenia asiatica” and “Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.” The enrichment culture converted NH4 + and NO2 − to N2 with the previously reported stoichiometry (1:1.27) and had a maximum specific anaerobic ammonium oxidation rate of 0.94 mmol NH4 +·g (dry weight)−1·h−1 at pH 7.1 and 32°C. The diagnostic anammox-specific lipids were detected at a concentration of 650 ng·g (dry weight)−1, and pentyl-[3]-ladderane was the most abundant ladderane lipid.
Microbial interactions play a keystone role in rapid anaerobic ammonium oxidation sludge proliferation and biofilm formation

Abstract:Two mature anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) consortia with high/low relative abundance of anammox bacteria were inoculated for the rapid sludge proliferation and biofilm formation in this study, named up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB1) (high) and UASB2 (low), respectively. Results showed that the nitrogen removal efficiency of UASB2 reached 90.94% after the 120-day operation, which was 13% higher than that of UASB1. Moreover, its biomass amounts were 22.18% (biofilm) and 40.96% (flocs) higher than that of UASB1, respectively. Ca. Kuenenia possessed relative abundances of 29.32% (flocs), 27.42% (biofilm) and 31.56% (flocs), 35.20% (biofilm) in the UASB1 and UASB2, respectively. The relative abundances of genes involved in anammox transformation ( hzs , nir ) and carbon metabolism ( fdh , GlgA/B/C , acs ) were higher in the UASB2, indicating that Ca. Kuenenia might produce acetate and glycogen to enhance microbial interactions. These findings emphasized the importance of microbial interactions in anammox sludge proliferation and biofilm formation.

Abstract:The feasibility of anammox-based processes for nitrogen-contained wastewater treatment has been verified with different anammox bacteria, however, the ecological niche of anammox bacteria under mainstream conditions is still elusive. In this study, six sludge samples collected from different habitats were utilized to culture anammox bacteria under mainstream conditions, and two distinct anammox genera (Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Brocadia) with a relative abundance of 6.31% (C1) and 3.09% (C3), respectively, were identified. Notably, the microbial dynamics revealed that anammox bacteria (AMX), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), Chloroflexi bacteria (CFX), and heterotrophic denitrification bacteria (HDB) were the core members in anammox consortia. However, Ca. Kuenenia and Ca. Brocadia occupied different ecological niches in anammox consortia. The dissolved oxygen and microbial structures of the anammox-continuous stirred tank reactor systems were the main factors to affect their niche differentiation. Meanwhile, comammox might exist in the systems and occupy the ecological niche of AOB in nitrogen cycling. The network analysis suggested that Ignavibacterium could be the associated bacteria in Ca. Kuenenia-dominated consortia, while Ca. Nitrotoga was that in the Ca. Brocadia-dominated consortia. Our findings reveal a valuable reference for the observation of distinct anammox genera under mainstream conditions, which provides theoretical guidance for the engineering application of mainstream anammox-based processes.

Abstract:Nitrogen removal characteristics and the comparison of the microbial community structure were investigated in different anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) reactors: an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and a biofilter reactor. The Anammox systems were inoculated with sludge from the second settling tank of a wastewater treatment plant in Guangzhou, China. After successful start up of Anammox, the microbial community structure of different Anammox reactors were studied through high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that anaerobic ammonium oxidation in the ASBR reactor could successfully start up after 134 days, while Anammox in the biofilter could start up after 114 days. In both systems, total nitrogen removal was at 80% after more than 200 days of operation. The diversity of denitrifying microorganisms was high in both reactors, with Planctomycetes as the main taxa. Anammox bacteria belonging to the genera Candidatus Anammoxoglobus and Kuenenia, were dominant in the ASBR, while all three genera of Candidatus, Anammoxoglobus, Kuenenia, and Brocadia, could be detected in the biofilter reactor. Therefore, the biofilter starts up faster than the ASBR, and contains richer species, which makes it more suitable to domesticate Anammox bacteria.

Abstract:To solve the problems of a slow start, easy loss, and easily inhibited activity of the Anammox bacteria suspension culture, polyvinyl alcohol-polypropylene (PVA-PP) was used to prepare the Anammox immobilized filler. To improve the activity of Anammox bacteria and ensure stable operation of the reaction system, the effects of COD interference, change in pH value, and rotating speed on the nitrogen removal characteristics of the immobilized filler were determined in batch tests. Changes in the structure and diversity of the bacteria in the filler were analyzed by a high-throughput sequencing technique. The results showed that the activity of Anammox bacteria could recover to 100% on the 30th day, and the total nitrogen removal rate was 87.7% when the total nitrogen volume load (NLR) was 0.69 kg·(m3·d)-1 at the stage of 99 days. After 140 days of long-term operation, the total nitrogen removal rate (NRR) reached 1.83 kg·(m3·d)-1, which was 9.4 times the suspended sludge before immobilization. The diversity of the population was maintained in the inclusion carrier, and the effective enrichment of Candidatus Kuenenia (AF375995.1), which performs anaerobic ammonia-oxidization, increased from 11.06% to 32.55%. The influence of COD interference and changes in the pH value of Anammox bacteria was significantly weakened, and the PVA-PP entrapped carrier could achieve the coupling removal of nitrogen by Anammox and denitrification. Appropriate external hydraulic disturbance would promote the Anammox reaction in immobilized systems.

Abstract:Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX)-mediated system is a cost-effective green nitrogen removal process. However, there are few examples of successful application of this advanced wastewater denitrification process in wastewater treatment plants, and the understanding of how to implement anaerobic ammonia oxidation process in full-scale is still limited. In this study, it was found that the abundance of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) in the two livestock wastewater plants named J1 and J2, respectively, showed diametrically opposed trends of waxing and waning with time. The microbial communities of the activated sludge in the two plants at different time were sampled and analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Structural equation models (SEMs) were used to reveal the key factors affecting the realization of the ANAMMOX. Changes in the concentration of dissolved oxygen and C/N had a significant effect on the relative abundance of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB). The low concentration of DO (0.2∼0.5 mg/L) could inhibit the activity of nitrifying bacteria (NOB) to achieve partial oxidation of ammonia nitrogen and provide sufficient substrate for the growth of AnAOB, similar to the CANON (Completely Autotrophic Nitrogen removal Over Nitrite). Unlike CANON, heterotrophic denitrification is also a particularly critical part of the livestock wastewater treatment, and a suitable C/N of about 0.6 could reduce the competition risk of heterotrophic microorganisms to AnAOB and ensure a good ecological niche for AnAOB. Based on the results of 16S rRNA and microbial co-occurrence networks, it was discovered that microorganisms in the sludge not only had a richer network interaction, but also achieved a mutually beneficial symbiotic interaction network among denitrifying bacteria (Pseudomonas sp., Terrimonas sp., Dokdonella sp.), AnAOB (Candidatus Brocadia sp.) at DO of 0.2∼0.5 mg/L and C/N of 0.6. Among the top 20 in abundance of genus level, AnAOB had a high relative abundance of 27.66%, followed by denitrifying bacteria of 3.67%, AOB of 0.64% and NOB of 0.26%, which is an essential indicator for the emergence of an AnAOB-dominated nitrogen removal cycle. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of dissolved oxygen and C/N regulation by analyzing the mechanism of ANAMMOX sludge extinction and growth in two plants under anthropogenic regulation of AnAOB in full-scale wastewater treatment systems.
