Abstract:Robot-assisted ultrasound scanning acquires spatial-property labeled images under high consistency, holding the potential to reconstruct the volume with more intuitive images for examination and surgery guidance. Promisingly, the vertebral level identification, as a time-consuming procedure before spine surgery, can be achieved by robotic ultrasound systems. However, the quality of ultrasound images subjects to the conditions of the examination, including the probe placement, the ultrasound beam incidence angle and the applied contact force. Especially, the spine holds a long and narrow, multi-joint, chain-like structure which is not simply compliant to the probe, presenting challenges to acquire high quality images and keep safety. This letter presents a compliant joint based robotic ultrasound system (CJRUS) for imaging the human spine. A compliant joint based adjusting mechanism (CJAM) is attached to the robotic manipulator to adjust the contact force with patients. A floating scanning strategy is proposed for the manipulator to maintain a buffer zone from the human body and determine the pose of the probe indirectly from the collection of dorsal shape. Phantom experiments concluded that the system could provide inherent safety (the output force was constrained to 20 N by rotary buffer) and adaptive capacity (the settling time was < 1 s for targets with different stiffness and the maximum overshoot decreased 90% in prediction force control) to scanning objects. In human trials, the coronal slice of the reconstructed volume obtained by CJRUS showed comparative results as freehand scanning and equivalent image qualities evaluated by picture contrast and edge gradient. CJRUS is expected to play a significant role in radiation-free navigation of minimally invasive spinal surgery in the future.

Abstract:Ultrasound imaging as a user-friendly and radiation-free navigation scheme has been gradually applied to minimally invasive spinal surgeries. However, acquiring an interpretable ultrasound image always requires experienced sonographers, which dramatically restricts its applications. To this end, in this article, a self-adaptive ultrasound scanning system (SAUSS) is proposed to image the human spine. This system automatically scans human back and real-time displays the spine structure. During scanning, our self-adaptive attitude-adjusting mechanism ensures the scan posture of the ultrasound probe, and guarantees human comfort and ultrasound coupling at the same time. According to the phantom experiments, our proposed system can maintain the resultant force in an appropriate region from 14 to 16 N on different segments of the spine and under different respiratory rates. Meanwhile, the automatically scanned image achieves higher quality and better repeatability than freehand one. In human trials, the image provided from SAUSS keeps clear image textures that are almost on par with computed tomography (CT) images, and its stability is also demonstrated from the comparisons of force fluctuations. In all, it has a great potential on navigation of spine surgery.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) imaging has been widely utilized for guiding puncture procedures in spinal interventions. However, conventional methods that confine puncture within the US plane may not adequately meet the demands of endoscopic spinal surgery (ESS), which requires extensive spatial orientation adjustments. In this study, we introduce a novel approach using a US robotic system (URS) integrated with a multi-approach puncture mechanism to aid in target localization and puncture assistance during ESS. The proposed mechanism incorporates a five-bar linkage structure with a remote center of motion (RCM) to drive the needle with two degrees of freedom, enabling significant orientation adjustments of $85^{\circ }$ in the transverse plane and $140^{\circ }$ in the coronal plane. Additionally, the probe holder module provides vertical adaptability of the probe and depth adjustment of the RCM on the US plane. Experimental validation on a cross-wire model demonstrates puncture accuracy of less than 3 mm, meeting clinical requirements for ESS. Furthermore, the system's clinical usability is demonstrated on a gel lumbar model, showcasing the entire process (imaging, targeting, navigating, and puncture assisting) from imaging to puncture assistance. The URS shows promise in significantly improving the puncture success rates in ESS while reducing technical dependencies.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to understand the acoustic properties of human vertebral cancellous bone and to study the feasibility of ultrasound-based navigation for posterior pedicle screw fixation in spinal fusion surgery. Fourteen human vertebral specimens were disarticulated from seven un-embalmed cadavers (four males, three females, 73.14 ± 9.87 years, two specimens from each cadaver). Seven specimens were used to measure the transmission, including tests of attenuation and phase velocity, while the other seven specimens were used for backscattered measurements to inspect the depth of penetration and A-Mode signals. Five pairs of unfocused broadband ultrasonic transducers were used for the detection, with center frequencies of 0.5 MHz, 1 MHz, 1.5 MHz, 2.25 MHz, and 3.5 MHz. As a result, good and stable results were documented. With increased frequency, the attenuation increased (P<0.05), stability of the speed of sound improved (P<0.05), and penetration distance decreased (P>0.05). At about 0.6 cm away from the cortical bone, warning signals were easily observed from the backscattered measurements. In conclusion, the ultrasonic system proved to be an effective, moveable, and real-time imaging navigation system. However, how ultrasonic navigation will benefit pedicle screw insertion in spinal surgery needs to be determined. Therefore, ultrasound-guided pedicle screw implantation is theoretically effective and promising.
3D ultrasound navigation system for screw insertion in posterior spine surgery: a phantom study

Abstract:PurposePosterior spinal fusion surgery is required to correct severe idiopathic scoliosis. The surgery involves insertion of screws which requires high accuracy to prevent neurologic damage to the spinal cord. Although conventional CT navigation can reduce this risk, 3D-ultrasound-based navigation could achieve this without added ionizing radiation and usage of expensive and bulky equipment. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a 3D ultrasound navigation system for posterior spine surgery.MethodsA custom 3D ultrasound (3DUS) with model-to-surface registration algorithm was developed and integrated into a 3D navigation environment. A CT scan of an adolescent spine (T3-T11) was segmented and 3D printed for experiments. A probe with reflective markers was placed in vertebral pedicles 684 times in varying levels, positions in the capture space and orientation of vertebra, and the entrypoint and trajectory accuracies were measured.ResultsAmong 684 probe placements in vertebral levels T3 to T11 in the phantom spine, 95.5% were within 1 mm and 5° of accuracy, with an average accuracy of 0.4 ± 0.4 mm and 2.1 ± 0.9°, requiring 8.8 s to process. Accuracies were statistically significantly affected by vertebral orientation and position in the capture volume, though this was still within the targeted accuracies of 1 mm and 5°.ConclusionThis preliminary ultrasound-based navigation system is accurate and fast enough for guiding placement of pedicle screws into the spine in posterior fusion surgery. The current results are limited to phantom spines, and future study in animal or human cadavers is needed to investigate soft tissue effects on registration accuracy.

Abstract:Ultrasound-guided spine interventions, such as lumbar-puncture procedures, often suffer from the reduced visibility of key anatomical features such as the inter-spinous process space, due to the complex shape of the self-shadowing vertebra. Therefore, we propose to design a wearable 3D ultrasound device capable of imaging the vertebra from multiple insonification angles to improve the 3D bone surface visualization for interventional guidance. In this work, we aim to equip the imaging platform with a reconstruction algorithm taking advantage of the redundant ultrasound beam angles. Specifically, we try to weight each beam's contribution for the same reconstructed voxel during the reconstruction process based on its incidence angle to the estimated bone surface. To validate our approach, we acquired multi-angle ultrasound image data on a spine phantom with a tracked phased array transducer. The results show that with the proposed method the bone surface contrast can be significantly enhanced, providing clearer visual guidance for the clinician to perform spine intervention.

Abstract:To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of AR-assisted pedicle screw placement using a new intraoperative rapid registration method of combining preoperative CT scanning and intraoperative C-arm 2D fluoroscopy in cadavers. Five cadavers with intact thoracolumbar spines were employed in this study. Intraoperative registration was performed using anteroposterior and lateral views of preoperative CT scanning and intraoperative 2D fluoroscopic images. Patient-specific targeting guides were used for pedicle screw placement from Th1-L5, totaling 166 screws. Instrumentation for each side was randomized (augmented reality surgical navigation (ARSN) vs. C-arm) with an equal distribution of 83 screws in each group. CT was performed to evaluate the accuracy of both techniques by assessing the screw positions and the deviations between the inserted screws and planned trajectories. Postoperative CT showed that 98.80% (82/83) screws in ARSN group and 72.29% (60/83) screws in C-arm group were within the 2-mm safe zone ( p < 0.001). The mean time for instrumentation per level in ARSN group was significantly shorter than that in C-arm group (56.17 ± 3.33 s vs. 99.22 ± 9.03 s, p < 0.001). The overall intraoperative registration time was 17.2 ± 3.5 s per segment. AR-based navigation technology can provide surgeons with accurate guidance of pedicle screw insertion and save the operation time by using the intraoperative rapid registration method of combining preoperative CT scanning and intraoperative C-arm 2D fluoroscopy.

Abstract:Objective: Augmented reality-mediated spine surgery (ARMSS) is a minimally invasive novel technology that has the potential to increase the efficiency, accuracy, and safety of conventional percutaneous pedicle screw insertion methods. Visual 3D spinal anatomical and 2D navigation images are directly projected onto the operator's retina and superimposed over the surgical field, eliminating field of vision and attention shift to a remote display. The objective of this cadaveric study was to assess the accuracy and precision of percutaneous ARMSS pedicle implant insertion. Methods: Instrumentation was placed in 5 cadaveric torsos via ARMSS with the xvision augmented reality head-mounted display (AR-HMD) platform at levels ranging from T5 to S1 for a total of 113 total implants (93 pedicle screws and 20 Jamshidi needles). Postprocedural CT scans were graded by two independent neuroradiologists using the Gertzbein-Robbins scale (grades A-E) for clinical accuracy. Technical precision was calculated using superimposition analysis employing the Medical Image Interaction Toolkit to yield angular trajectory (°) and linear screw tip (mm) deviation from the virtual pedicle screw position compared with the actual pedicle screw position on postprocedural CT imaging. Results: The overall implant insertion clinical accuracy achieved was 99.1%. Lumbosacral and thoracic clinical accuracies were 100% and 98.2%, respectively. Specifically, among all implants inserted, 112 were noted to be Gertzbein-Robbins grade A or B (99.12%), with only 1 medial Gertzbein-Robbins grade C breach (> 2-mm pedicle breach) in a thoracic pedicle at T9. Precision analysis of the inserted pedicle screws yielded a mean screw tip linear deviation of 1.98 mm (99% CI 1.74-2.22 mm) and a mean angular error of 1.29° (99% CI 1.11°-1.46°) from the projected trajectory. These data compare favorably with data from existing navigation platforms and regulatory precision requirements mandating that linear and angular deviation be less than 3 mm (p < 0.01) and 3° (p < 0.01), respectively. Conclusions: Percutaneous ARMSS pedicle implant insertion is a technically feasible, accurate, and highly precise method.
Automatic breach detection during spine pedicle drilling based on vibroacoustic sensing

Abstract:Pedicle drilling is a complex and critical spinal surgery task. Detecting breach or penetration of the surgical tool to the cortical wall during pilot-hole drilling is essential to avoid damage to vital anatomical structures adjacent to the pedicle, such as the spinal cord, blood vessels, and nerves. Currently, the guidance of pedicle drilling is done using image-guided methods that are radiation intensive and limited to the preoperative information. This work proposes a new radiation-free breach detection algorithm leveraging a non-visual sensor setup in combination with deep learning approach. Multiple vibroacoustic sensors, such as a contact microphone, a free-field microphone, a tri-axial accelerometer, a uni-axial accelerometer, and an optical tracking system were integrated into the setup. Data were collected on four cadaveric human spines, ranging from L5 to T10. An experienced spine surgeon drilled the pedicles relying on optical navigation. A new automatic labeling method based on the tracking data was introduced. Labeled data was subsequently fed to the network in mel-spectrograms, classifying the data into breach and non-breach. Different sensor types, sensor positioning, and their combinations were evaluated. The best results in breach recall for individual sensors could be achieved using contact microphones attached to the dorsal skin (85.8\%) and uni-axial accelerometers clamped to the spinous process of the drilled vertebra (81.0\%). The best-performing data fusion model combined the latter two sensors with a breach recall of 98\%. The proposed method shows the great potential of non-visual sensor fusion for avoiding screw misplacement and accidental bone breaches during pedicle drilling and could be extended to further surgical applications.

Abstract:Purpose:Ultrasound-guided spine interventions often suffer from the insufficient visualization of key anatomical structures due to the complex shapes of the self-shadowing vertebrae. Therefore, we propose an ultrasound imaging paradigm, AutoInFocus (automatic insonification optimization with controlled ultrasound), to improve the key structure visibility.Methods:A phased-array probe is used in conjunction with a motion platform to image a controlled workspace, and the resulting images from multiple insonification angles are combined to reveal the target anatomy. This idea is first evaluated in simulation and then realized as a robotic platform and a miniaturized patch device. A spine phantom (CIRS) and its CT scan were used in the evaluation experiments to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the advantages of the proposed method over the traditional approach.Results:We showed in simulation that the proposed system setup increased the visibility of interspinous space boundary, a key feature for lumbar puncture guidance, from 44.13 to 67.73% on average, and the 3D spine surface coverage from 14.31 to 35.87%, compared to traditional imaging setup. We also demonstrated the feasibility of both robotic and patch-based realizations in a spine phantom study.Conclusion:This work lays the foundation for a new imaging paradigm that leverages redundant and controlled insonification to allow for imaging optimization of the complex vertebrae anatomy, making it possible for high-quality visualization of key anatomies during ultrasound-guided spine interventions.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose Spinal instrumentation with pedicle screw placement (PSP) is an important surgical technique for spinal diseases. Accurate screw trajectory is a prerequisite for PSP. Ultrasound (US) imaging with robot‐assisted system forms a non‐radiative alternative to provide precise screw trajectory. This study reports on the development and assessment of US navigation for this application. Methods A robot‐assisted US reconstruction was proposed and an automatic CT‐to‐US registration algorithm was investigated, allowing the registration of screw trajectories. Experiments were conducted on ex‐vivo lamb spines to evaluate system performance. Results In total, 72 screw trajectories are measured, displaying an average position accuracy of 2.80 ± 1.14 mm and orientation accuracy of 1.38 ± 0.61°. Conclusion The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of proposed US system. This work, although restricted to laboratory settings, encourages further exploration of the potential of this technology in clinical practice.

Abstract:Minimally invasive pedicle screw placement (MIPSP) is a widely used treatment for spine diseases. When coupled with intraoperative navigation modalities, robots may help improve surgical outcomes and reduce complications. With such a system, the application of pedicle screws has been expanded from needle insertion to the spine surgery. This paper investigates the possibility and feasibility of robot-assisted MIPSP based on ultrasound (US) guidance. The proposed system is non-radiative and fiducial-free, using purely image information to close the registration loop. Then the system automatically positions the drill tip to a planned screw trajectory and executes the drilling operation. Experiments were conducted on both ex-vivo lamb and human cadaver spines. An entry point accuracy of 2.39±1.41 mm, and orientation accuracy of 2.82±1.85∘ was found for 24 drilled trajectories on three lamb spines. On the ex-vivo human spine, the position error averaged 3.08±2.43 mm at the entry point and 4.05±2.62 mm at the stop point across 16 drilling instances. Moreover, a 87.5% success rate was reported by using Gertzbein-Robbins grade. The experimental results demonstrate the potential for offering a radiation-free alternative. Although restricted to cadaver trials, this work encourages further exploration of this technology to assist surgeons in maximizing performance in clinical practice.

Abstract:Pedicle screw (PS) implantation is an ideal treatment for severe multilevel vertebra instabilities. The accuracy of fixating PS is a key factor of spinal surgery. We developed a near-infrared spectroscopy device with a needlelike optical fiber probe to monitor optical parameters (reduced scattering coefficient) of vertebra models in real time. The fresh-frozen cadaver, cats and porcine vertebras were first studied in the experiments. Moreover, the reduced scattering coefficient (μ′ s) along the different trajectories of PS insertion was obtained. In the fresh-frozen cadavera experiment, μ′ s values could be used to distinguish the different compositions of the thoracic vertebra. In cat vertebra experiment, μ′ s values of vertebrae bones, including cortical bone (15.30 ± 0.18 cm−1), cancellous bone (7.84 ± 1.11 cm−1) and spinal cord (19.46 ± 0.21 cm−1), were different in vivo. In the pig vertebrae experiment, there were obvious differences between the normal and abnormal PS puncture curves based on μ′ s values. Thus, μ′ s values measured by using the proposed device could be used as the pattern factor in spinal fusion surgery. Our studies demonstrate that near-infrared spectroscopy method may be potentially used for assisting the PS insertion.
Automatic Spinal Canal Breach Detection During Pedicle Screw Placement

Abstract:Precise pedicle screw placement is imperative for a range of spinal procedures demanding exact geometric alignment while also carrying inherent risks. The literature reports a complication rate in the case of screw mispositioning of up to 18. To increase the accuracy of pedicle screw placement, we developed a robotic setup and a breach detection algorithm that could detect a possible perforation of the spinal canal. The robotic setup includes a robotic arm, a drilling system, and specific sensors, e.g., electrical conductivity at the drill bit's tip. The breach detection algorithm consists of a Bayesian-based method providing online and real-time analysis of the electrical conductivity signal to predict a breach. The robotic setup and the perforation detection algorithm were assessed in two ex-vivo experiments. First, data collection was performed by drilling 80 fresh pig vertebrae pedicles, followed by precise data labeling by a surgeon. The evaluation of the proposed algorithm was conducted numerically. Finally, the assessment was performed online by automatically drilling into pedicles in conditions similar to the operating room. The results demonstrated that the algorithm could predict perforations and prevent the robotic setup from going through in 100 of 24 drilled vertebrae. Results demonstrate that using electrical conductivity combined with a robotic setup allows the detection of imminent perforations of the spinal canal during pedicle drilling. This was the first study to evaluate spinal canal perforation detection during ex-vivo pig pedicle drilling.

Abstract:This paper aims to tackle the issues on unavailable or insufficient clinical US data and meaningful annotation to enable bone segmentation and registration for US-guided spinal surgery. While the US is not a standard paradigm for spinal surgery, the scarcity of intra-operative clinical US data is an insurmountable bottleneck in training a neural network. Moreover, due to the characteristics of US imaging, it is difficult to clearly annotate bone surfaces which causes the trained neural network missing its attention to the details. Hence, we propose an In silico bone US simulation framework that synthesizes realistic US images from diagnostic CT volume. Afterward, using these simulated bone US we train a lightweight vision transformer model that can achieve accurate and on-the-fly bone segmentation for spinal sonography. In the validation experiments, the realistic US simulation was conducted by deriving from diagnostic spinal CT volume to facilitate a radiation-free US-guided pedicle screw placement procedure. When it is employed for training bone segmentation task, the Chamfer distance achieves 0.599mm; when it is applied for CT-US registration, the associated bone segmentation accuracy achieves 0.93 in Dice, and the registration accuracy based on the segmented point cloud is 0.13~3.37mm in a complication-free manner. While bone US images exhibit strong echoes at the medium interface, it may enable the model indistinguishable between thin interfaces and bone surfaces by simply relying on small neighborhood information. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose to utilize a Long-range Contrast Learning Module to fully explore the Long-range Contrast between the candidates and their surrounding pixels.

Objective The incidence of degenerative diseases of the lumbar spine has increased in recent years. Unilateral pedicle screw combined with contralateral translaminar facet screw fixation offers the advantages of less trauma, better stability, and fewer complications. However, the surgical difficulty and suboptimal pinning accuracy of translaminar facet screw placement in clinical practice limit its use. Therefore, in this study, we designed a novel suspended 3D‐printed navigation module to facilitate fast and accurate intraoperative screw placement. The aim of this study is to investigate the digital design, precise implementation, and evaluation methods for placing unilateral pedicle screws in the lumbar spine combined with translaminar facet screw placement using a new suspended 3D navigation module. Methods This retrospective study included 46 patients with single‐level lumbar lesions who underwent spine surgery at the Affiliated Hospital of Putian University between June 2022 and December 2023. The suspended navigation module was designed digitally. Preoperative screw placement was simulated using 3D printed models, followed by an intraoperative accurate screw placement facilitated by the navigation module and a postoperative evaluation of the accuracy of screw placement. The absolute difference in three‐dimensional coordinates of the inlet and outlet points of the preoperative design and the postoperative screw‐nail channel served as the precision index. Results In a study involving 46 patients, surgery was successful with 92 pedicle screws and 46 translaminar facet screws placed without any penetration of the cortex. The difference in coordinates before and after screw insertion was minimal, with entry points varying between 1.21 to 1.36 mm and exit points between 1.97 to 2.46 mm. When screw accuracy met certain thresholds, there was no significant difference between preoperative design and postoperative coordinates, indicating precise replication of the surgical plan. Conclusion The new suspended 3D navigation module enables the precise placement of unilateral pedicle screws in the lumbar spine combined with translaminar pedicle screws for precise surgery.

Ex vivo validation of non-invasive phase correction for transspine focused ultrasound: model performance and target feasibility

Abstract:Objective. To evaluate the feasibility of transspine focused ultrasound using simulation-based phase corrections from a CTderived ray acoustics model. Approach. Bilateral transspine focusing was performed in ex vivo human vertebrae with a spine-specific ultrasound array. Ray acoustics-derived phase correction was compared to geometric focusing and a hydrophonecorrected gold standard. Planar hydrophone scans were recorded in the spinal canal and three metrics were calculated: target pressure, coronal and sagittal focal shift, and coronal and sagittal Sørensen-Dice similarity to the free field. Post hoc analysis was performed in silico to assess the impact of windows between vertebrae on focal shift. Main results. Hydrophone correction reduced mean sagittal plane shift from 1.74 ± 0.82 mm to 1.40 ± 0.82 mm and mean coronal plane shift from 1.07 ± 0.63 mm to 0.54 ± 0.49 mm. Ray acoustics correction reduced mean sagittal plane and coronal plane shift to 1.63 ± 0.83 mm and 0.83 ± 0.60 mm, respectively. Hydrophone correction increased mean sagittal similarity from 0.48 ± 0.22 to 0.68 ± 0.19 and mean coronal similarity from 0.48 ± 0.23 to 0.70 ± 0.19. Ray acoustics correction increased mean sagittal and coronal similarity to 0.53 ± 0.25 and 0.55 ± 0.26, respectively. Target pressure was relatively unchanged across beamforming methods. In silico analysis found that, for some targets, unoccluded paths may have increased focal shift. Significance. Gold standard phase correction significantly reduced coronal shift and significantly increased sagittal and coronal Sørensen-Dice similarity (p < 0.05). Ray acoustics-derived phase correction reduced sagittal and coronal shift and increased sagittal and coronal similarity but did not achieve statistical significance. Across beamforming methods, mean focal shift was comparable to MRI resolution, suggesting that transspine focusing is possible with minimal correction in favorable targets. Future work will explore the mitigation of acoustic windows with anti-focus control points.

Accuracy Over Space and Time of Computer-Assisted Fluoroscopic Navigation in the Lumbar Spine In Vivo

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The integration of digital image-guided surgical navigation with C-arm fluoroscopy, known as virtual fluoroscopy (VF), has been shown to enhance the safety of spine surgery in vitro. Few clinical studies have assessed the accuracy of VF during actual spinal surgery, and no studies have investigated variations in accuracy over the course of a series of measurements obtained during operative cases. We sought to study the intraoperative accuracy of VF over time and space during lumbar pedicle screw placement in human patients.METHODS: Fluoroscopic images of the lumbar spine were obtained, calibrated, and saved to the Stealth Station (FluoroNav) on seven patients undergoing lumbar fusion surgery. The tracking arc was attached to an exposed lumbar spinous process, which was designated the index level. With use of anatomic surface irregularities in the laminae and spinous processes, several points were identified and registered on three different vertebrae directly adjacent to the index level vertebra. Every 15 minutes, throughout the operative case, the probe was brought to each point and the apparent distance from the original location recorded (as measured by the FluoroNav system). Measurements were collected from three vertebral levels adjacent to the index level over a time course of 120 minutes during the operation.RESULTS: At the index, index +1, index +2, and index +3 levels, 89%, 81%, 92%, and 64% of measurements were within <2 mm, whereas 97%, 96%, 97%, and 91% were within <3 mm, respectively. At 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, and 120 minutes, 96%, 89%, 85%, 61%, 85%, 90%, 93%, and 50% of measurements were within <2 mm, whereas 100%, 93%, 100%, 83%, 100%, 90%, 100%, and 100% of measurements were within <3 mm, respectively. The error in millimeters tended to increase as the distance from the index level increased (R = 0.19, P < 0.05) and as operative time increased (R = 0.26, P < 0.01). Calibration studies of intraoperative VF (IoVF) in the lumbar spine documented a reasonable degree of accuracy. The majority of sequential measurements obtained during IoVF in the lumbar spine were within an error range of <3 mm.CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the use of VF is a reliable method of verifying the use of anatomic and/or radiographic landmarks for guidance during lumbar pedicle screw placement.
