Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) and light cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are central nonperturbative objects of interest in high-energy inelastic and elastic scattering, respectively. As a result, an ab initio determination of these objects is highly desirable. In this paper we present theoretical details for the calculation of the PDFs and LCDAs using a heavy-quark operator product expansion method. This strategy was proposed in a previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 73, 014501 (2006)] for computing higher moments of the PDFs using lattice QCD. Its central feature is the introduction of a fictitious, valence heavy quark. In the current article, we show that the operator product expansion of the hadronic matrix element we study can also be expressed as the convolution of a perturbative matching kernel and the corresponding light cone distribution, which in principle can be inverted to determine the parton momentum fraction dependence. Regarding the extraction of higher moments, this work also provides the one-loop Wilson coefficients in the operator product expansion formulas for the unpolarized PDF, helicity PDF and pseudoscalar meson LCDAs. Although these Wilson coefficients for the PDFs can be inferred from existing results in the literature, those for the LCDAs are new.

Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science

Abstract:We review the current status of parton distribution function (PDF) determinations for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized protons and for unpolarized nuclei, which are probed by high-energy hadronic scattering in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We present the established theoretical framework, the experimental information, and the methodological aspects inherent to any modern PDF extraction. Furthermore, we summarize the present knowledge of PDFs and discuss their limitations in both accuracy and precision relevant to advancing our understanding of QCD proton substructure and pursuing our quest for precision in the Standard Model and beyond. In this respect, we highlight various achievements, discuss contemporary issues in PDF analyses, and outline future directions of progress.

Abstract:We study parton-branching solutions of QCD evolution equations and present a method to construct both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from this approach. We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale in the evolution equations. For longitudinal momentum distributions, we find agreement of our numerical calculations with existing evolution programs at the level of better than 1 percent over a range of five orders of magnitude both in evolution scale and in longitudinal momentum fraction. We make predictions for the evolution of transverse momentum distributions. We perform fits to the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure function measurements, and we present a set of NLO TMD distributions based on the parton branching approach.

The extracted distributions can in particular be used to quantify the contribution to the proton spin from the total angular momentum carried by valence quarks, as well as their transverse spatial distribution inside the proton.

Abstract:We revisit our argument that shows that parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the scheme are non-negative in the perturbative region, with the dual goals of clarifying its theoretical underpinnings and elucidating its domain of validity. We specifically discuss recent results proving that PDFs can turn negative at sufficiently low scale, we clarify quantitatively various aspects of our derivation of positivity in the perturbative region, and we provide an estimate for the scale above which PDF positivity holds.

Abstract:We perform a next to leading order QCD global analysis of nuclear deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan data using the convolution approach to parameterize nuclear parton densities. We find both a significant improvement in the agreement with data compared to previous extractions, and substantial differences in the scale dependence of nuclear effects compared to leading order analyses.

Abstract:I explain the current status of parton-distribution-function (PDF) studies and future experimental prospects on their determinations. First, unpolarized PDFs of the nucleon are introduced as a field of precision QCD physics including higher-order $\alpha_s$ corrections. Second, nuclear PDFs and polarized nucleonic PDFs are discussed. Third, the determination of fragmentation functions is explained. Forth, the three-dimensional (3D) structure functions are discussed in connection with the origin of the nucleon spin and gravitational form factors of hadrons. By the 3D structure functions, gravitational sources and the origin of nucleon mass could be clarified in the microscopic level of quarks and gluons. Furthermore, 3D structure studies of hadrons could be used for clarifying internal structure of exotic hadron candidates, nuclear composition of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, and color-entanglement phenomena. The PDF field will be developed further along with progress in other fields of science.

Abstract:We model the structure of hadrons by a confined parton gas with light-front kinematics. These partons are treated as classical spin-zero particles confined inside the hadron with inter-parton collisions as their only interaction. The microcanonical dynamics ensemble is applied to obtain the phase-space distribution of this thermodynamic system. We sample this phase-space distribution using Monte Carlo algorithms to obtain the parton distribution functions in scenarios with $3$, $4$, and $5$ partons.

Abstract:We present a calculation of the perturbative quark-to-quark transverse parton distribution function at next-to-next-to-leading order based on a gauge invariant operator definition. We demonstrate for the first time that such a definition works beyond the first nontrivial order. We extract from our calculation the coefficient functions relevant for a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic ${Q}_{T}$ resummation in a large class of processes at hadron colliders.

Abstract:The leading Fock state light-front wave functions of heavy quarkonia and $D$ and $B$ mesons are obtained from the projections of their Bethe-Salpeter wave functions on the light front. We compute therefrom their leading-twist time-reversal even transverse momentum distributions and parton distribution functions. Mirroring the behavior of parton distribution amplitudes, the support of both distributions is increasingly narrower and shifted towards larger $x$ as a function of the meson mass. The dependence of $x$ and $\k_\perp^2$ of the transverse distributions does not factorize into separate functions, and their fall-off with $\k_\perp^2$ is much slower than that of light mesons.

Abstract:Parton distribution functions (PDFs) describe universal properties of bound states and allow us to calculate scattering amplitudes in processes with large momentum transfer. Calculating PDFs involves the evaluation of matrix elements with a Wilson line in a light-cone direction. In contrast to Monte Carlo methods in Euclidean spacetime, these matrix elements can be directly calculated in Minkowski-space using the Hamiltonian formalism. The necessary spatial- and time-evolution can be efficiently applied using established tensor network methods. We present PDFs in the Schwinger model calculated with matrix product states.

Abstract:We present a Lattice QCD calculation of the second Mellin moments of the nucleon axial, vector and tensor parton distribution functions (PDFs). The calculation is performed at the physical pion mass with two different lattice spacings, and includes both zero and non-zero nucleon momenta. In our preliminary analysis, we identify operators that greatly reduce excited-state contamination.

Abstract:Structure functions of the spin-1 deuteron will be investigated experimentally from the late 2020's at various facilities such as Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, nuclotron-based ion collider facility, and electron-ion colliders. We expect that a new high-energy spin-physics field could be created by these projects. In this paper, the current theoretical status is explained for the structure functions of spin-1 hadrons, especially on parton distribution functions, transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions, and fragmentation functions. Related multiparton distribution functions are also shown.

Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order Evolution of Polarized Parton Densities in the Larin Scheme

Abstract:In many calculations involving polarized twist-2 parton densities to higher order in the strong coupling constant one uses the Larin scheme to describe chiral effects in dimensional regularization. Upon forming observables, the scheme dependence cancels. Still one needs a corresponding regularization scheme to compute the contributing building blocks, like massless and massive Wilson coefficients, as well as the massive 3-loop operator matrix elements used in the variable flavor number scheme. These are matched to the evolved parton distribution functions in the Larin scheme. Starting with suitable input distributions we provide the solution of scale evolution of the different polarized parton distribution functions in Bjorken $x$ space for a wide range of virtualities $Q^2$ in the Larin scheme, at next-to-leading, and to next-to-next-to-leading order for the first time. We also illustrate the deviation between the parton distributions in the Larin and $\overline{\rm MS}$ schemes numerically.

Abstract:By introducing ansatz and using a PDF at the approximation in this paper, we have studied the structure of the nucleons in generalized parton distributions. For this purpose, the form factors and the electric radius of nucleons, as well as the quark's form factors, are calculated in this paper. These calculations give important new information about the nucleons and the distribution of partons within them. The results are analyzed, and to validate them, the abstract emphasizes the importance of comparing the results with existing research and experimental data. By varying the free appropriate parameters of the new ansatz, the study seeks to optimize the model, ensure its suitability for accurately describing the nucleon's internal structure, and provide valuable insights about the distribution of partons.

Abstract:We present a new, comprehensive global analysis of parton-to-pion fragmentation functions at next-to-leading-order accuracy in QCD. The obtained results are based on the latest experimental information on single-inclusive pion production in electron-positron annihilation, lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions. An excellent description of all data sets is achieved, and the remaining uncertainties in parton-to-pion fragmentation functions are estimated based on the Hessian method. Extensive comparisons to the results from our previous global analysis are performed.
