Abstract:The parton branching method is crucial for Monte Carlo generators, which are essential for high-energy physics predictions. We examine the impact of soft gluons on inclusive collinear and Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton densities. By applying the Parton-Branching (PB) method, we identify the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor with the integration range $z \to 1$, which is often neglected in collinear parton shower approaches. The significance of soft gluons is demonstrated through the transverse momentum spectrum of Drell-Yan lepton pairs, resulting in an intrinsic-$k_t$ distribution width that remains independent of $\sqrt(s)$, contrary to observations in collinear parton shower approaches. This behavior is attributed to the non-perturbative Sudakov form factor.

Abstract:We discuss the state-of-the-art of the theory of transverse-momentum dependent parton densities (TMD)s, paying special attention to their renormalization properties, the structure of the gauge links in the operator definition, and the role of the soft factor in the factorization formula within the TMD approach to the semi-inclusive processes. We argue that the use of the lightcone axial gauge offers certain advantages for a consistent definition of TMDs as compared to the off-the-light-cone gauges, or covariant gauges with off-the-lightcone gauge links.

Abstract:Rapidity divergences occur when parton densities in a gauge theory are defined in the most natural way, as expectation values of partonic number operators in light-front quantization. I review these and other related divergences, and show how the definitions of parton densities can be modified to remove the divergences. A modified definition is not only essential for many phenomenological applications of QCD, but also concerns the treatment of parton densities in non-perturbative approaches. The necessity of modifications in the definition of a parton density also entails corrections in the formulation of light-front quantization for gauge theories.

Collinear and TMD Quark and Gluon Densities from Parton Branching Solution of QCD Evolution Equations

Abstract:We study parton-branching solutions of QCD evolution equations and present a method to construct both collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from this approach. We work with next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy in the strong coupling. Using the unitarity picture in terms of resolvable and non-resolvable branchings, we analyze the role of the soft-gluon resolution scale in the evolution equations. For longitudinal momentum distributions, we find agreement of our numerical calculations with existing evolution programs at the level of better than 1 percent over a range of five orders of magnitude both in evolution scale and in longitudinal momentum fraction. We make predictions for the evolution of transverse momentum distributions. We perform fits to the high-precision deep inelastic scattering (DIS) structure function measurements, and we present a set of NLO TMD distributions based on the parton branching approach.

Abstract:We investigate the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) in the parton quasidistributions framework. The longstanding hurdle of the so-called pinch pole singularity from the spacelike gauge links in the TMD definitions can be resolved by the finite length of the gauge link along the hadron moving direction. In addition, with the soft factor subtraction, the quasi-TMD is free of linear divergence. We further demonstrate that the energy evolution equation of the quasi-TMD a.k.a. the Collins-Soper evolution, only depends on the hadron momentum. This leads to a clear matching between the quasi-TMD and the standard TMDs.

Abstract:There is considerable controversy about the size and importance of nonperturbative contributions to the evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. Standard fits to relatively high-energy Drell-Yan data give evolution that when taken to lower Q is too rapid to be consistent with recent data in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. Some authors provide very different forms for TMD evolution, even arguing that nonperturbative contributions at large transverse distance b_T are not needed or are irrelevant. Here, we systematically analyze the issues, both perturbative and nonperturbative. We make a motivated proposal for the parameterization of the nonperturbative part of the TMD evolution kernel that could give consistency: with the variety of apparently conflicting data, with theoretical perturbative calculations where they are applicable, and with general theoretical nonperturbative constraints on correlation functions at large distances. We propose and use a scheme- and scale-independent function A(b_T) that gives a tool to compare and diagnose different proposals for TMD evolution. We also advocate for phenomenological studies of A(b_T) as a probe of TMD evolution. The results are important generally for applications of TMD factorization. In particular, they are important to making predictions for proposed polarized Drell-Yan experiments to measure the Sivers function.

The resolution to the problem of consistent large transverse momentum in TMDs

Abstract:Parametrizing TMD parton densities and fragmentation functions in ways that consistently match their large transverse momentum behavior in standard collinear factorization has remained notoriously difficult. We show how the problem is solved in a recently introduced set of steps for combining perturbative and nonperturbative transverse momentum in TMD factorization. Called a ``bottom-up'' approach in a previous article, here we call it a ``hadron structure oriented'' (HSO) approach to emphasize its focus on preserving a connection to the TMD parton model interpretation. We show that the associated consistency constraints improve considerably the agreement between parametrizations of TMD functions and their large-$k_T$ behavior, as calculated in collinear factorization. The procedure discussed herein will be important for guiding future extractions of TMD parton densities and fragmentation functions and for testing TMD factorization and universality. We illustrate the procedure with an application to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) structure functions at an input scale $Q_0$, and we show that there is improved consistency between different methods of calculating at moderate transverse momentum. We end with a discussion of plans for future phenomenological applications.

On the normalization of unintegrated parton densities

Abstract:Recently, the definitions of the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin-Watt (KMRW) unintegrated parton densities (UPDFs) have been discussed by several groups. In the first part of this manuscript, we remind the issues encountered with these definitions and discuss the proposed solutions. In our opinion, none of these solutions is fully satisfactory. We observe that these issues seem to be related to the normalization condition where the UPDFs are related to the collinear PDFs by an integration over transverse momentum cut off by the factorization scale. Then, we build a modified version of the angular-ordering KMRW UPDFs, obeying the normalization condition with the transverse momentum integrated up to infinity and show that the usual issues are absent.

Abstract:We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions at small-x in a consistent framework that takes into account the TMD evolution and small-x evolution simultaneously. The small-x evolution effects are included by computing the TMDs at appropriate scales in terms of the dipole scattering amplitudes, which obey the relevant Balitsky–Kovchegov equation. Meanwhile, the TMD evolution is obtained by resumming the Collins–Soper type large logarithms emerged from the calculations in small-x formalism into Sudakov factors.

Abstract:Two main frameworks for defining transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities are the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, and the Parton Branching (PB) approach. While PB-TMDs have an explicit dependence on a single scale which is used to evolve PB-TMDs in momentum space, TMDs defined in CSS formalism present a double-scale evolution in renormalization and rapidity scales, via a pair of coupled evolution equations. In this letter I leverage the Collins-Soper kernel determined from simulated Drell Yan transverse momentum spectra using PB-TMDs, and provide, for the first time, the transformation of TMD parton distributions from the PB framework to the CSS formalism. The evolved PB-TMDs in $b$-space are compared to the recently released, unpolarized TMD distribution ART23.

Transverse masses and kinematic constraints: from the boundary to the crease

Abstract:We re-examine the kinematic variable m_T2 and its relatives in the light of recent work by Cheng and Han. Their proof that m_T2 admits an equivalent, but implicit, definition as the `boundary of the region of parent and daughter masses that is kinematically consistent with the event hypothesis' is far-reaching in its consequences. We generalize their result both to simpler cases (m_T, the transverse mass) and to more complex cases (m_TGen). We further note that it is possible to re-cast many existing and unpleasant proofs (e.g. those relating to the existence or properties of "kink" and "crease" structures in m_T2) into almost trivial forms by using the alternative definition. Not only does this allow us to gain better understanding of those existing results, but it also allows us to write down new (and more or less explicit) definitions of (a) the variable that naturally generalizes m_T2 to the case in which the parent or daughter particles are not identical, and (b) the inverses of m_T and m_T2 -- which may be useful if daughter masses are known and bounds on parent masses are required. We note the implications that these results may have for future matrix-element likelihood techniques.

Abstract:Transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) appear in many scattering processes at high energy, from the semi-inclusive DIS experiments at a few GeV to the Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC. Predictions for TMD observables crucially depend on TMD factorization, which in turn determines the TMD evolution of the observables with energy. In this contribution to SPIN2014 TMD factorization is outlined, including a discussion of the treatment of the nonperturbative region, followed by a summary of results on TMD evolution, mostly applied to azimuthal asymmetries.

Abstract:We assess the current phenomenological status of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) and study the effect of consistently including perturbative QCD (pQCD) evolution. Our goal is to initiate the process of establishing reliable, QCD-evolved parametrizations for the TMD PDFs and TMD FFs that can be used both to test TMD-factorization and to search for evidence of the breakdown of TMD-factorization that is expected for certain processes. In this article, we focus on spin-independent processes because they provide the simplest illustration of the basic steps and can already be used in direct tests of TMD-factorization. Our calculations are based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, supplemented by recent theoretical developments which have clarified the precise definitions of the TMD PDFs and TMD FFs needed for a valid TMD-factorization theorem. Starting with these definitions, we numerically generate evolved TMD PDFs and TMD FFs using as input existing parametrizations for the collinear PDFs, collinear FFs, non-perturbative factors in the CSS factorization formalism, and recent fixed-scale fits. We confirm that evolution has important consequences, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and argue that it should be included in future phenomenological studies of TMD functions. Our analysis is also suggestive of extensions to processes that involve spin-dependent functions such as the Boer-Mulders, Sivers, or Collins functions, which we intend to pursue in future publications. At our website we have made available the tables and calculations needed to obtain the TMD parametrizations presented herein.

Abstract:We show that the gauge-invariant transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) quark distribution function can be expressed as a sum of all higher-twist collinear parton matrix elements in terms of a transport operator. From such a general expression, we derive the nuclear broadening of the transverse-momentum distribution. Under the maximal two-gluon correlation approximation, in which all higher-twist nuclear multiple parton correlations with the leading nuclear enhancement are given by products of twist-two nucleon parton distributions, we find the nuclear transverse-momentum distribution as a convolution of a Gaussian distribution and the nucleon TMD quark distribution. The width of the Gaussian, or the mean total transverse-momentum broadening squared, is given by the path integral of the quark transport parameter (q) over cap (F) which can also be expressed in a gauge-invariant form and is given by the gluon distribution density in the nuclear medium. We further show that contributions from higher-twist nucleon gluon distributions can be resummed under the extended adjoint two-gluon correlation approximation and the nuclear transverse-momentum distribution can be expressed in terms of a transverse-scale-dependent quark transport parameter or gluon distribution density. We extend the study to hot medium and compare to dipole model approximation and N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in the strong coupling limit. We find that multiple gluon correlations become important in the strongly coupled system such as N = 4 SYM plasma.

Abstract:Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), TMDs for short, are defined as the Fourier transform of matrix elements of nonlocal combinations of quark and gluon fields. The nonlocality is bridged by gauge links, which for TMDs have characteristic paths (future or past pointing), giving rise to a process dependence that breaks universality. It is possible, however, to construct sets of universal TMDs of which in a given process particular combinations are needed with calculable, process-dependent, coefficients. This occurs for both T-odd and T-even TMDs, including also the {\it unpolarized} quark and gluon TMDs. This extends the by now well-known example of T-odd TMDs that appear with opposite sign in single-spin azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering or in the Drell-Yan process. In this paper we analyze the cases where TMDs enter multiplied by products of two transverse momenta, which includes besides the $p_T$-broadening observable, also instances with rank two structures. To experimentally demonstrate the process dependence of the latter cases requires measurements of second harmonic azimuthal asymmetries, while the $p_T$-broadening will require measurements of processes beyond semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering or the Drell-Yan process. Furthermore, we propose specific quantities that will allow for theoretical studies of the process dependence of TMDs using lattice QCD calculations.

Abstract:Spin is a welcome complication in the study of partonic structure that has led to new insights, even if theoretically and experimentally not all dust has settled, in particular on quark flavor dependence and gluon spin. At the same time it opened new questions on angular momentum and effects of transverse structure. In this talk the focus is on the role of the transverse momenta of partons. Like for collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs), we are also in the case of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs, talking about forward matrix elements. TMD PDFs (or in short TMDs) extend collinear PDFs with only spin-spin correlations to PDFs that include spin-momentum correlations, including also time-reversal-odd (T-odd) correlations, relevant for the description of single spin asymmetries. In this way TMDs open up new ways of studying the spin structure. Their operator structure within QCD, however, is more complex leading to various ways of breaking of universality.

Abstract:A bstract Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions match collinear parton density functions (PDF) in the limit of small transverse distances, which is accounted for by global extractions of TMD distributions. We study the influence of the collinear PDF value and uncertainties on the determination of unpolarized TMD distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) and Z-boson production measurements at low transverse momenta. We take into account, for the first time in fits including TMD evolution, flavor-dependent non-perturbative TMD profiles. We carry out a Bayesian analysis to incorporate the propagation of PDF uncertainties into TMD extractions. We find that collinear PDF uncertainties and non-perturbative TMD flavor dependence are both essential to obtain reliable TMD determinations, and should be included in future global analyses.

Abstract:Lattice QCD calculations of transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) in nucleons are presented, based on the evaluation of nucleon matrix elements of quark bilocal operators with a staple-shaped gauge connection. Both time-reversal odd effects, namely, the generalized Sivers and Boer-Mulders transverse momentum shifts, as well as time-reversal even effects, namely, the generalized transversity and one of the generalized worm-gear shifts, are studied. Results are obtained on two different nf=2+1 flavor ensembles with approximately matching pion masses but very different discretization schemes: domain-wall fermions (DWF) with lattice spacing a=0.084 fm and pion mass 297 MeV, and Wilson-clover fermions with a=0.114 fm and pion mass 317 MeV. Comparison of the results on the two ensembles yields insight into the length scales at which lattice discretization errors are small, and into the extent to which the renormalization pattern obeyed by the continuum QCD TMD operator continues to apply in the lattice formulation. For the studied TMD observables, the results are found to be consistent between the two ensembles at sufficiently large separation of the quark fields within the operator, whereas deviations are observed in the local limit and in the case of a straight link gauge connection, which is relevant to the studies of parton distribution functions. Furthermore, the lattice estimates of the generalized Sivers shift obtained here are confronted with, and are seen to tend towards, a phenomenological estimate extracted from experimental data.
