Abstract:Transpiration is a critical component of the hydrological cycle in the terrestrial forest ecosystem. However, how potential evapotranspiration regulates the response of canopy transpiration to soil moisture and leaf area index of the boreal larch forest in China has rarely been evaluated. The present study was conducted in the larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) forest, which is a typical boreal forest in China. The canopy transpiration was measured using sap flow techniques from May to September in 2021 and simultaneously observing the meteorological variables, leaf area index (LAI) and soil moisture (SWC). The results showed that there were significant differences in canopy transpiration of Larix gmelinii among the months. The correlation and regression analysis indicated that canopy transpiration was mainly influenced by potential evapotranspiration (PET), while the effect of soil moisture on canopy transpiration was lowest compared with other environmental factors. Furthermore, our results revealed that the effect of PET on canopy transpiration was not regulated by soil moisture when soil moisture exceeded 0.2 cm3 cm−3. More importantly, under the condition of sufficient soil moisture, it was demonstrated that the response of canopy transpiration to leaf area index was limited when PET exceeded 9 mm/day. These results provide valuable implications for supporting forest management and water resource utilization in the boreal forest ecosystem under the context of global warming.

Environmental Factors Driving the Transpiration of a Betula platyphylla Sukaczev Forest in a Semi-arid Region in North China during Different Hydrological Years

Abstract:More and more droughts happened during the last decades, threatening natural forests in the semi-arid regions of North China. The increase in drought pressure may have an impact on stand transpiration (T) in semi-arid regions due to rising temperature and changes in precipitation. It is unclear how the transpiration of natural forest in semi-arid regions respond to drought, which is regulated by environmental factors. In this study, a relatively simple but mechanism-based forest stand T model that couples the effects of the reference T, solar radiation (Rn), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and relative extractable water (REW) in the 0–80 cm soil layer was developed to quantify the independent impacts of Rn, VPD, and REW on T. The model was established based on the observed sap flow of four sample trees, and environmental factors were observed from May to September in different hydrological years (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2021) in a pure white birch (Betula platyphylla Sukaczev) forest stand in the southern section of the Greater Khingan Mountains, northeastern China. The sap flow data were used to calculate tree transpiration (Tt) and T to calibrate the T model. The results indicated that (1) The Tt sharply declined in the 'dry' year compared with that in the 'wetter' year. The daily Tt for small trees in the 'dry' year was only one-fifth of that in the 'wetter' year, and the daily Tt of large trees was 48% lower than that in the 'normal' year; (2) Large trees transpired more water than small trees, e.g., the daily Tt of small trees was 89% lower than that of the large trees in the 'normal' year; (3) Daily T increased with the increase in Rn, and the response conformed to a binomial function. Daily T responded to the rise of VPD and REW in an exponential function, first increasing rapidly, gradually reaching the threshold or peak value, and then stabilizing; (4) The driving factors for the T shift in different hydrological years were the REW in the 'dry' year, but the Rn and REW in the 'wet', 'normal', and 'wetter' years. The REW in the 'wet' and 'wetter' years exerted positive effects on T, but in the 'normal' and 'dry' year, exerted negative effects on T. Thus, the environmental factors affecting T were not the same in different hydrological years.

Abstract:Evapotranspiration (ET) is an essential component of the forest stand water budget, and the main factors controlling ET variations are meteorological conditions and soil moisture. A deep understanding of their impacts on ET is crucial for forest water management and sustainable development in changing environments. However, the independent effects of meteorological conditions and soil moisture on ET are not clear because their impacts occur concurrently under natural environmental conditions. In this study, a relatively simple but mechanism-based forest stand ET model that couples the effects of the reference ET (ETo) and relative extractable water (REW) in the 0–60 cm soil layer was developed to quantify the independent impacts of ETo and REW on ET. The model was established based on observed stand transpiration, forest floor ET, meteorological conditions, and soil water content obtained on non-rainfall days of the 2015, 2016, and 2019 growing seasons from a larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) plantation in Northwest China. The following key results were obtained. (1) At this sub-humid site, the weather-dependent ET increased linearly with rising ETo; daily ET initially increased rapidly with rising REW, and then gradually reached a threshold; thereafter, it tended to be stable. The response could be described by an exponential saturation function. (2) The daily stand ET model that coupled these response functions to individual factors was determined as ET = 0. 785 × [ETo × (1 – EXP(–13.567REW))]. (3) The contributions of ETo and REW were further determined using the new ET model, and the results show that ETo was the main driving factor affecting the ET variations in three different hydrological years compared with REW and the interaction of ETo and REW. Compared with those in the normal year 2015, REW and ETo limited the ET variation in the dry year 2016 by 13.1% and 7.3%, respectively, and ETo limited the ET variation in the wet year 2019 by 8.8%. Our study provides a simple and feasible method for separating the meteorological conditions (i.e., ETo) and soil moisture controls on ET variations, and can improve the understanding of the impacts of varying environments on ET.

Responses of sap flow in Larix principis-rupprechtii to environment under different weather conditions

Abstract:This study was conducted in Liupanshan Forest Ecological Positioning Station of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. We monitored sap flow of Larix principis-rupprechtii plantation in the Xiangshui River sub-basin throughout the 2019 growing season (from May 17 to October 12), as well as the meteorological conditions and soil environment (soil temperature and soil water content), to analyze the comprehensive environmental responses of sap flow in L. principis-rupprechtii under different weather conditions. The results showed that sap flow rate increased and then decreased on the daily scale, with the highest rate on sunny days, followed by overcast days and then rainy days. Sap flow rate had a single peak on sunny days and multiple peaks on overcast and rainy days. Sunny days had earlier and longer sap flow compared to overcast and rainy days. Dominant factors driving sap flow differed across different weather. Vapor pressure deficit was the dominant factor influencing sap flow in sunny and overcast days, while solar radiation was dominant one in rainy days. The contribution rates of main factors to sap flow on sunny, overcast and rainy days were 31.1%, 27.4% and 40.1%, respectively. Results of the principal component analysis showed the factors affecting sap flow on sunny days could be classified into hydrothermal complex factors (air temperature, soil temperature, and volumetric soil moisture), water vapor transpiration factors (relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit), and radiation factor (solar radiation). The factors affecting sap flow on overcast and rainy days were combined into transpiration (relative humidity, solar radiation, and vapor pressure deficit), heat (air temperature and soil temperature), and soil water factor volumetric (volumetric soil moisture). On sunny days, sap flow reached the peak value 110, 80, 70 min after the hydrothermal, water vapor transpiration, and radiation factors, respectively. On overcast and rainy days, sap flow reached its peak in 10, 20, 30 min and 140, 60, 150 min, respectively before the peaks of transpiration, heat, and soil water factors.

Abstract:To accurately quantify tree transpiration and determine related hydrologic and physiological processes, it is important to have reliable information on environmental and physiological controls on sap flow. The objective of this study is to explore the environmental and physiological controls on sap flow in a headwater catchment in the subhumid mountainous region of North China, which has pronounced environmental specificities in hydro-climatic conditions, bedrock properties, and edaphic features. Sap flow in Aspen (Populus davidiana) (one of the dominant tree species in the region) and relevant environmental and physiological factors were measured from 2013 to 2014. The results indicate the following: (1) The dominant controlling factor of sap flow switched from a meteorological to a physiological factor when leaf area index (LAI) dropped to a low value (approximately <1 m(2) m(-2)) around early October; (2) LAI exhibited a threshold control on possible maximum sap flow with a LAI threshold value of 3.5 m(2) m(-2), while environmental factors led to fluctuations in sap flow within the upper bound that was determined by the physiological factor LAI; (3) Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was the key environmental factor controlling sap flow as a whole, while at the monthly timescale the controls of environmental factors on sap flow had significant seasonal variability; (4) The diurnal relationships between sap flow and environmental factors revealed evident hysteresis loops, which were markedly influenced by the radiation factor. With the combination of the environmental factor PAR and the physiological factor LAI, an empirical regression equation (SFD = 0.7059PAR * LAI + 4.5068, R-2 = 0.8862, n = 207) was established for sap flow estimation in the study area. These results shed light on the hydrologic and physiological processes involved in tree transpiration, and contribute to the refinement of tree transpiration models in regions under similar environmental conditions. Biophysical controls on canopy transpiration of Pinus tabulaeformis under different soil moisture conditions in the Loess Plateau of China

Abstract:Soil moisture is a critical variable controlling the processes of the Earth's energy-water-carbon cycles, balances and their feedback loops, which plays an important role in climate change prediction. However, soil moisture and meteorology are interrelated and interact through different ecological processes, resulting in variable and complex biophysical regulation of tree water use in water-scarce areas. This study selected Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. as the target tree species in the semiarid area of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Canopy transpiration ( E c ), soil water content ( SWC ), and meteorological variables were continuously monitored during the growing seasons (May–September) in 2015–2020. Throughout the study period, precipitation and SWC were crucial factors affecting E c and stomatal activity, and both were positively correlated with E c and canopy conductance ( G c ) on an annual scale. The threshold point of soil water stress for Pinus tabulaeformis was when the value of soil relative extractable water ( REW ) reached 0.36. Moreover, soil moisture can alter the response of E c to meteorological variables. Under soil water stress ( REW < 0.36), total solar radiation ( R s ) and SWC contributed the most to E c , and E c trended to decrease under high vapor pressure deficit ( VPD ) and air temperature ( T a ). At this point, VPD and T a significantly suppressed G c . In contrast, under non-water stress conditions ( REW ≥ 0.36), R s and VPD contributed more to E c than other variables. As VPD , R s , and T a rose, E c increased more quickly when REW ≥ 0.36, while VPD still exerted an inhibitory effect on G c to avoid excessive water loss. Our results suggest that Pinus tabulaeformis exhibits a drought avoidance water use strategy by controlling transpiration with strict stomatal regulation under soil water stress. These findings will contribute to understanding how the changing soil moisture affects tree transpiration regulation under the background of climate change in semiarid areas.

[Characteristics of soil moisture limitation and non-limitation in the response of sap flow to transpiration driving factors]

Abstract:Transpiration is a significant part of water cycle in forest ecosystems, influenced by meteorological factors and potentially constrained by soil moisture. We used Granier-type thermal dissipation probes to monitor xylem sap flow dynamics of three tree species (Quercus liaotungensis, Platycladus orientalis, and Robinia pseudoacacia) in a semi-arid loess hilly region, and to continuously monitor the key meteorological factors and soil water content (SWC). We established the SWC thresholds delineating soil moisture-limited and -unlimited sap flow responses to transpiration drivers. The results showed that mean sap flux density (Js) of Q. liaotungensis and R. pseudoacacia was significantly higher during period with higher soil moisture compared to lower soil moisture, while the difference in Js for P. orientalis between the two periods was not significant. We used an exponential saturation function to fit the relationship between the Js of each tree species and the integrated transpiration variable (VT) which reflected solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit. The difference in the fitting curve parameters indicated that there were distinct response patterns between Js and VT under different soil moisture conditions. There was a threshold in soil moisture limitation on sap flow for each species, which was identified as 0.129 m3·m-3 for Q. liaotungensis, 0.116 m3·m-3 for P. orientalis, and 0.108 m3·m-3 for R. pseudoacacia. Below the thresholds, Js was limited by soil moisture. Above these points, the normalized sensitivity index (NSI) for Q. liaotungensis and P. orientalis reached saturation, while that of R. pseudoacacia did not reach saturation but exhibited a significant reduction in moisture limitation. Among the three species, P. orientalis was the most capable of overcoming soil moisture constraints.
Response of sap flow in Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) to environmental variables in the Qilian Mountains of China

With significant changes in water regimes in arid areas due to climate change, a greater understanding of transpiration responses to environmental variables will determine ecosystem health and management. Therefore, using the heat ratio method, sap flow in Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) at different microenvironment conditions was monitored over 2 years (2016 and 2017) in the Qilian Mountains. Environmental variables were measured synchronously with sap flow. The random forests model showed that vapor pressure deficit (VPD), soil water content (SWC), and daily maximum air temperature (Tmax) were the most important variables to affect sap flow across four sites and two years. These results differed within sites and years. The important variables were VPD and SWC in 2016 due to lower precipitation, and VPD and Tmax in 2017. Meanwhile, the most important variables were VPD in 2016 and Tmax in 2017 at the high-elevation site, while opposite at the low-elevation site. Nonlinear models showed that sap flow decreased when VPD > 0.7–1.0 kPa, and saturated when Tmax > 15–20 °C. Sap flow was more sensitive to SWC at low than at high elevation. We concluded that VPD, SWC, and Tmax controlled sap flow in Qinghai spruce at these sites. Precipitation played a key role in controlling sap flow in different years, and altitudes affected the responses of sap flow to environmental variables within years.

Abstract:Soil moisture ( VWC ) and atmospheric dryness (vapor pressure deficit, VPD ) have an increasing impact on tree transpiration and productivity with climate change. However, the interaction of VWC and VPD on canopy transpiration ( E c ) of plantations is still unclear, especially in water-scarce areas. Here, we selected Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. and Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco plantations in the semiarid loess hills of China to examine the impacts of soil and atmospheric water conditions on E c during the growing seasons (May–September) of 2015–2020. The results showed that the magnitudes of E c were similar in the two plantations throughout the study period. The lowest E c occurred in September because of little precipitation and low atmospheric evaporative demand, while E c was highest in July due to the increase in soil water availability and atmospheric evaporative demand. There were obvious inflection points in the response relationship between VWC and VPD with E c for both plantations. Under non-drought conditions, E c reached a maximum in both plantations and was mainly impacted by solar radiation ( R s ) and air temperature. As VPD increased, R s still was the dominant factor, but canopy conductance decreased significantly, resulting in negative correlations between E c and VPD . Under soil drought and compound drought conditions, E c was mainly controlled by R s and VWC , and the inhibitory effect of VPD on E c was enhanced. In addition, the ratio of E c to precipitation was close to 50% for both plantations at the interannual scale. Considering that soil water depletion in the Loess Plateau will accelerate with climate change and increasing drought events, the increasing water use stress will further hinder tree gas exchange, inhibiting tree growth. It is thus necessary to pay special attention to the impact of soil and atmospheric drought on water use for forest management in the Loess Plateau and similar regions of the world.

Environmental Controls on Evapotranspiration and Its Components in a Qinghai Spruce Forest in the Qilian Mountains

Abstract:Qinghai spruce forests, found in the Qilian mountains, are a typical type of water conservation forest and play an important role in regulating the regional water balance and quantifying the changes and controlling factors for evapotranspiration (ET) and its components, namely, transpiration (T), evaporation (Es) and canopy interceptions (Ei), of the Qinghai spruce, which may provide rich information for improving water resource management. In this study, we partitioned ET based on the assumption that total ET equals the sum of T, Es and Ei, and then we analyzed the environmental controls on ET, T and Es. The results show that, during the main growing seasons of the Qinghai spruce (from May to September) in the Qilian mountains, the total ET values were 353.7 and 325.1 mm in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The monthly dynamics in the daily variations in T/ET and Es/ET showed that T/ET increased until July and gradually decreased afterwards, while Es/ET showed opposite trends and was mainly controlled by the amount of precipitation. Among all the ET components, T always occupied the largest part, while the contribution of Es to ET was minimal. Meanwhile, Ei must be considered when partitioning ET, as it accounts for a certain percentage (greater than one-third) of the total ET values. Combining Pearson's correlation analysis and the boosted regression trees method, we concluded that net radiation (Rn), soil temperature (Ts) and soil water content (SWC) were the main controlling factors for ET. T was mainly determined by the radiation and soil hydrothermic factors (Rn, photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and TS30), while Es was mostly controlled by the vapor pressure deficit (VPD), atmospheric precipitation (Pa), throughfall (Pt) and air temperature (Ta). Our study may provide further theoretical support to improve our understanding of the responses of ET and its components to surrounding environments.

Abstract:The critical zone (CZ) represents the intersection of the biosphere with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. Understanding the hydrological processes and human impact factors on the CZ is fundamental to sustainable water resources management for agroforestry. Transpiration (T) is an important component of terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET), and understanding the time lag (TL) between vegetation transpiration and meteorological factors can improve our knowledge of the mechanisms of vegetation adaptability to a changing environment. However, the controlling factors on the TL remain poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study is identifying the temporal dynamics of key controlling factors on the TL, using a typical deciduous broad-leaved tree species (Zenia insigins Chun) of CZ in subtropical humid karst regions. This species is used as an example to explore the characteristics of the TL between SF (sap flow) and hydro-meteorological forcing. Sap flow in these 6 trees was monitored using the thermal dissipation probes (TDP). Results showed that: (1) the peak of diurnal sap flow generally lagged behind PAR but preceded Ta (air temperature), RH (relative humidity) and VPD (vapor pressure deficit), with the mean TL of −67.4 min (PAR), 90.5 min (Ta), 91.6 min (RH) and 92.9 min (VPD), respectively; (2) TL had no significant relationships with the daily mean meteorological factors and soil moisture, but was highly (R2>0.66) correlated to CRs (changing rates of meteorological factors) in the morning; (3) At seasonal scale, the sap flow rate and TL both were controlled by the seasonality of precipitation and temperature. Overall, the seasonality of the TL was caused by plants’ high water loss and strongly active physiological response in hot seasons, leading to close stomata earlier than in cold seasons; (4) The reason why CRs proposed can explain the TL better than mean values of metrological factors is that the CRs considered the distribution and change processes of metrological factors in the daytime. This study may be helpful for understanding the physiological response of vegetation to climatic change, and may be useful for constructing models to simulate transpiration processes more accurately during a day.

Abstract:Transpiration in artificial forests has a vital role in the ecohydrological cycle and evolution of afforestation in semi-arid regions. However, further research is required to understand the impacts of biotic and abiotic factors on transpiration and water regulation strategies in tree species under climate change. We used the sap flow method to quantify transpiration in three adjacent plantations ( Pinus tabuliformis , Populus simonii , and Ulmus pumila ) spaced 40 m apart, and concurrently monitored soil moisture and meteorological variables. Significant differences in average transpiration were observed in the following order: P. simonii (1.31 ± 0.49 mm d –1 ) > U. pumila (1.04 ± 0.45 mm d –1 ) > P. tabuliformis (0.75 ± 0.31 mm d –1 ), due to differences in the canopy conductance, which followed the order of P. simonii (2.02 ± 0.18 mm/s) > U. pumila (1.70 ± 0.15 mm/s) > P. tabuliformis (1.26 ± 0.11 mm/s) ( P < 0.05). Under severe soil water stress, high vapor pressure deficit , and high solar radiation, transpiration was reduced in all species during the drought period in 2022 because of reduced canopy conductance ( P < 0.05). Our findings demonstrate that a fast growth rate, deep root systems, and close relationships between the leaf water potential and stomatal regulation are vital strategies for trees responding to drought. Consequently, we recommend P. simonii for shelter forests and P. tabuliformis for ecological landscape forests to improve the stability of afforestation in semi-arid regions.

Abstract:As a tree species of shelterbelts, Populus popularis maintains significant ecological functions in arid and semiarid areas. However, stand transpiration ( T ) and canopy conductance ( g c ) dynamics of P. popularis are unclear in arid irrigated areas with shallow groundwater fluctuations. To better understand the responses of T and g c to meteorological factors, soil water, and shallow groundwater in arid areas, we observed the environmental conditions and sap flow of P. popularis , and quantified T and g c in three growing seasons of 2018–2020 in a typical arid area of China. Results showed T and g c ranged from 0.18 to 6.11 mm day − 1 and 2.26–12.54 mm s −1 in 2018–2020, respectively. Solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit ( VPD ) were major drivers of T at daily scales. It was consistently found that T exponentially decreased with increasing groundwater table depth ( GTD ) and decreasing reference evapotranspiration in three years. g c is primarily influenced by VPD and is positively related to soil water content in 0–30 cm soil layer ( SWC 0–30 cm ). Moreover, low SWC 0–30 cm and deepening GTD jointly decreased T and g c by 22.45 % and 30.41 %, respectively. The response of g c to VPD was susceptible to groundwater fluctuations, and the synergistic influences of VPD and GTD on g c could be well described by the logarithmic function, especially in 2019. The sensitivity of g c to VPD and its variations under different environmental conditions suggested that a flexible stomatal regulation of transpiration occurred in the observed P. popularis with the arid climate and shallow groundwater. These findings provided the essential basis for the water use strategy of P. popularis and stand water resources management in arid regions.

Abstract:Establishing whether uptake of rainwater-recharged soil water (RRS) can increase plant transpiration in response to rainfall pulses requires an investigation to evaluate plant adaptability, especially in water-limited regions where rainwater is the only replenishable soil water source. In this study, the water sources from RRS and three soil layers, the predawn leaf water potential ( Ψ pd ), the midday leaf water potential ( Ψ m ), the gradient of leaf water potential ( Ψ pd −Ψ m ), and the plant transpiration in response to rainfall pulses were analyzed for two dominant tree species, Hippophae rhamnoides subsp. sinensis and Populus tomentosa , in pure and mixed plantations during the growing period (June–September). Mixed afforestation significantly enhanced Ψ pd −Ψ m , RRS uptake proportion (RUP), and the relative response of daily normalized sap flow (SF R ) and reduced the water source proportion from the deep soil layer (100–200 cm) for both species ( P <0.05 ). In pure and mixed plantations, the large Ψ pd −Ψ m was consistent with high SF R for H. rhamnoides and the small Ψ pd −Ψ m was consistent with low SF R for P. tomentosa in response to rainfall pulses. Therefore, H. rhamnoides and P. tomentosa exhibited anisohydric and isohydric behavior, respectively, and the former plant species was more sensitive to rainfall pulses than P. tomentosa . Furthermore, in pure plantations, the SF R was significantly affected by RUP and Ψ pd −Ψ m for H. rhamnoides and significantly influenced by Ψ pd −Ψ m for P. tomentosa ( P <0.05 ). However, the SF R was significantly influenced by RUP and Ψ pd −Ψ m for both species in the mixed plantation. These results indicate that mixed afforestation enhanced the influence of RRS uptake on plant transpiration for these different rainfall-pulse-sensitive plants. This study provides insights into suitable plantation species selection and management considering the link between RRS uptake and plant transpiration in water-limited regions.

Abstract:Elucidating the seasonal patterns of water sources for dominant species in the sub-tropical humid mountainous forest, analyzing the eco-hydrological complementarity and competition mechanisms among coexisting species, investigating the responses of plant water utilization to precipitation, could provide a theoretical basis for vegetation restoration and management. Based on the stable hydrogen and oxygen isotope technique, we analyzed the δ2H and δ18O characteristics of precipitation, xylem water from Pinus massoniana and Quercus variabilis, and soil water from 0-100 cm depth in Mount Lushan, China. The MixSIAR model, Levins index, and PS index were used to calculate the relative contribution rate of each water source, the hydrological niche breadth, and niche overlap of P. massoniana and Q. variabilis. The results showed that, in the wet season (March to July), P. massoniana primarily utilized soil water from the 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm depths, while Q. variabilis primarily utilized that from the 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm depths. During the dry season (August to September), P. massoniana and Q. variabilis utilized 40-60 cm and 60-80 cm of soil water, respectively, resulting in an increase in the depth of water absorption. In the early growing season (March to April) and the late growing season (September), there was a high hydrological niche overlap between P. massoniana and Q. variabilis, resulting in intensitive water competition. In the middle of the growing season (May to August), the water source was adequately allocated, and the hydrolo-gical niche was segregated to meet the high transpiration demand. Q. variabilis primarily utilized soil water from a depth of 60-80 cm and 60-80 cm before a precipitation event, and from a depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm after the event. In contrast, P. massoniana primarily utilized soil water from a depth of 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm both before and after a precipitation event. In conclusion, water utilization patterns of P. massoniana and Q. variabilis exhibited a seasonal trend, with shallow water uptake during the rainy season and deep water uptake during the dry season. These species are capable of efficiently allocating water resources during the peak growth season, and their root systems actively respond to change in soil moisture level. They have strong adaptability to extreme precipitation events and exhibit remarkable water conservation capabilities.

Abstract:In order to study water consumption characteristics of Phyllostachys edulis,this paper conducts a continuous observation from September 2012 to August 2013 of the leaf transpiration rate,the sap flow rate and environmental factors by using LI-6400,sap flow meter and mini weather station in Nanjing Dongshanqiao Forest. The results indicate that:(1)the change of the transpiration rate(Tr )takes on a single-peak curve in all seasons. So does the net photosynthetic rate(Pn )in spring,autumn and winter. The Tr and Pn are at its highest in summer. Stomatal conductance has a prominent influence on the tran-spiration rate.(2)The sap flow rate of Phyllostachys edulis showes distinct diurnal changing rhythms both in sunny and cloudy days in different seasons. The crest values of the sap flow rate in spring,summer,au-tumn and winter are 2. 207 kg / h,4. 380 kg / h,2. 062 kg / h,and 0. 300 kg / h respectively.(3)The domi-nant environmental factors in spring,summer are solar radiation,but VPD in autumn and winter. Soil tem-perature and VPD have a significant impact on the average daily sap flow rate of Phyllostachys edulis.(4) The models which relate the transpiration rate,sap flow rate,daily sap flow with impact factors can explic-itly reflect the water consumption characteristics of Phyllostachys edulis.

Abstract:Urban evapotranspiration (ET) is an effective way to mitigate ecological challenges resulting from rapid urbanization. However, the characteristics of urban vegetation ET, especially how they respond to meteorological factors and soil water, remains unclear, which is crucial for urban ET regulation. Therefore, this study measured the actual ET rate of an urban lawn (ETlawn) using the Bowen ratio system and an urban tree (T-tree) by a sap flow system in the hot summer of a subtropical megacity, Shenzhen. The results showed that the daily ETlawn was more restricted by energy (R-s) and diffusion conditions (vapor pressure deficit, VPD), while the daily T-tree was more restricted by VPD and relative extractable water (REW) in the urban area. The daily T-tree decreased when the REW was lower than 0.18, while the daily ETlawn started to decrease when it was lower than 0.14. When REW was lower than 0.11, the T-tree stayed at a relatively low level. The impacts of VPD was more evident on the diurnal T-tree than on the diurnal ETlawn. Wind speed had a scarce impact as it was relatively low in urban areas. This study clarifies the different responses of ETlawn and T-tree to meteorological factors and soil water based on actual ET. The results are of great significance for the knowledge of urban forestry and urban hydrology.
Water yield variation with elevation, tree age and density of larch plantation in the Liupan Mountains of the Loess Plateau and its forest management implications

Abstract:Large scale afforestation mainly for erosion control or timber production and a very strict logging ban policy in recent decades led to many over-dense stands and remarkable water yield reduction in the dryland region of the Loess Plateau in northwest China. To guide the integrated forest-water management at stand level, a study on the response of water yield from larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) plantations to key stand structure and site factors was carried out in the Liupan Mountains. Models of leaf area index (LAI) of forest canopy and stand evapotranspiration (ET) in the growing season were developed and fitted. The growing season water yield was calculated based on water budget. The results showed that: (1) The LAI increases with rising tree density firstly quickly and then slowly and finally tending to its maximum; but firstly increases and then decreases with rising tree age and elevation. The LAI model coupling the effects of tree density, age, and elevation works well. (2) The ET model reflecting the coupled effects of precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, LAI and soil moisture can well predict the ET variation. (3) The water yield decreases gradually with rising tree density, but firstly decreases and then increases with rising tree age and elevation. The lowest water yield appears at the age of 30 years and at an elevation of 2420 m. (4) The implications of this study for integrated forest-water management are: defining water yield as the dominant forest service at high or low elevations, but quality timber production as the dominant service at medium elevations; arranging rational thinning for dense forests around the age of 30 years; designing a mosaic distribution of forest ages within watersheds. Applying the study outcomes can promote the integration of water yield management with traditional forest management to ensure the sustainability of water supply in dryland regions.

Abstract:Accurate estimations of forest evapotranspiration (ET) and its components, transpiration (T) and evaporation (E), are important for deep understanding and predicting the responses of forest water cycles to climate change. In this study, the improved Shuttleworth-Wallace model (SWH) was applied to estimate ET, T, and E during 2003–2014 in a subtropical planation, and the modeled results were verified using in situ measurements by the eddy covariance technique, sap flow, and micro-lysimeter method. The study aimed to clarify whether it is feasible and reliable to use the SWH model to estimate and partition ET in forests. In addition, depending on the long-term data, the specific performances in modeling ET under different climatic backgrounds were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were explored. The results verified that the SWH performed relatively well in the subtropical forest, and the modeled ET, T and E could track the seasonal variations, although overestimations were found in the peak seasons. However, the model was relatively weaker in estimating the interannual variabilities. It performed well in modeling ET in normal years but showed larger model residuals in years with obvious climatic anomalies. In the severe summer-drought (2003) and cold-spring (2005) years, the model greatly overestimated ET. It also overestimated ET in summer since 2010, which may be ascribed to the less dependency of ET on VPD induced by the more humid microclimate in forest accompanied with forest development. For the ET partitioning results, the modeled and measured E and T values were all in reasonable ranges. The possible reasons for underestimations (overestimations) of E and T by measurements (SWH model) were discussed. In this study, the data obtained using different methods and from different scales matched each other and could be cross validated, and the discussion on discrepancies would be beneficial for understanding the advantages and flaws of different methods and could be the basis for optimizing the measurement and model methods. In sum, this study verified that it is feasible to use the SWH model in forests and provided a basis for further improving and optimizing the modeled results under different climate backgrounds.
