Abstract:To accurately quantify tree transpiration and determine related hydrologic and physiological processes, it is important to have reliable information on environmental and physiological controls on sap flow. The objective of this study is to explore the environmental and physiological controls on sap flow in a headwater catchment in the subhumid mountainous region of North China, which has pronounced environmental specificities in hydro-climatic conditions, bedrock properties, and edaphic features. Sap flow in Aspen (Populus davidiana) (one of the dominant tree species in the region) and relevant environmental and physiological factors were measured from 2013 to 2014. The results indicate the following: (1) The dominant controlling factor of sap flow switched from a meteorological to a physiological factor when leaf area index (LAI) dropped to a low value (approximately <1 m(2) m(-2)) around early October; (2) LAI exhibited a threshold control on possible maximum sap flow with a LAI threshold value of 3.5 m(2) m(-2), while environmental factors led to fluctuations in sap flow within the upper bound that was determined by the physiological factor LAI; (3) Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was the key environmental factor controlling sap flow as a whole, while at the monthly timescale the controls of environmental factors on sap flow had significant seasonal variability; (4) The diurnal relationships between sap flow and environmental factors revealed evident hysteresis loops, which were markedly influenced by the radiation factor. With the combination of the environmental factor PAR and the physiological factor LAI, an empirical regression equation (SFD = 0.7059PAR * LAI + 4.5068, R-2 = 0.8862, n = 207) was established for sap flow estimation in the study area. These results shed light on the hydrologic and physiological processes involved in tree transpiration, and contribute to the refinement of tree transpiration models in regions under similar environmental conditions. Abstract:Co-occurring species may adopt different water-use strategies to adapt to limited soil water. In Jiuzhaigou Valley, a continuous decline in soil water after an initial recharge from the thawing of snow and frozen soil in early spring was observed, but its effects on the sap flow dynamics of co-occurring species are not well understood. To clarify the species-specific water-use strategy, variations in sap flow and environmental conditions were investigated for two co-occurring species (Betula albosinensis Burk. and Pinus tabuliaeformis Carr.) in a mixed forest during a transition from the wet to dry period in 2014. Sap flow was measured using Granier-type thermal dissipation probes, and the soil-water content was measured using time-domain reflectometry probes for a successive period. Our study showed that B. albosinensis maintained relatively high transpiration until late into the season regardless of soil moisture, while the transpiration of P. tabuliformis showed a continuous decrease in response to seasonal soil drying. Sap flow for both species exhibited a marked hysteresis in response to meteorological factors and it was conditioned by the soil-water status, especially in the afternoon. We found that P. tabuliformis was sensitive to soil-water conditions, while for B. albosinensis, the sap flow was not very sensitive to changes in soil-water conditions. These results indicate that B. albosinensis could manage the water consumption conservatively under both dry and wet conditions. These results may have implications for evaluating the species-specific water-use strategy and carrying out proper reforestation practices.
The Relationship between Sap Flow Density and Environmental Factors in the Yangtze River Delta Region of China

Abstract:Canopy transpiration is an important component of evapotranspiration, integrating physical and biological processes within the water and energy cycles of forests. Quercus acutissima and Cunninghamia lanceolata are two important, fast‐growing and commercial tree species that have been extensively used for vegetation restoration, water conservation and building artificial forests in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. The primary objective of this study was to characterize sap flow densities of the two species by comparing daytime and nocturnal sap flow patterns and their relationships with environmental factors. Sap flow densities (Sd) were measured between September 2012 and August 2013 using the commercially‐available thermal dissipation probes. Hourly meteorological data were measured in an open field, located 200 m away from the study site, including photosynthetically‐active radiation (Par), air temperature (Ta), relative air humidity (Rh), vapor pressure deficit (Vpd) and precipitation (P). Soil water content (Swc) data were logged hourly in different layers at Q. acutissima and C. lanceolata forests. Results indicated that the mean Sd in summer was higher than that in spring and autumn. Both the Sd of Q. acutissima and C. lanceolata showed distinct diurnal patterns. Nocturnal sap flow densities (Sdn) were noticeable, and both species followed similar declining patterns during our study period. The daytime sap flow density (Sdd) was more sensitive to environmental factors than Sdn. Sap flow density was significant linearly correlated with Par, Vpd and Ta, and Par and Vpd explained the greatest amount of variation in daytime sap flow of Q. acutissima and C. lanceolata, respectively. Our study will enrich knowledge of plantation forest physical and biological processes and provide valuable information for plantation forest management in the Yangtze River Delta region of China.

Abstract:Transpiration in artificial forests has a vital role in the ecohydrological cycle and evolution of afforestation in semi-arid regions. However, further research is required to understand the impacts of biotic and abiotic factors on transpiration and water regulation strategies in tree species under climate change. We used the sap flow method to quantify transpiration in three adjacent plantations ( Pinus tabuliformis , Populus simonii , and Ulmus pumila ) spaced 40 m apart, and concurrently monitored soil moisture and meteorological variables. Significant differences in average transpiration were observed in the following order: P. simonii (1.31 ± 0.49 mm d –1 ) > U. pumila (1.04 ± 0.45 mm d –1 ) > P. tabuliformis (0.75 ± 0.31 mm d –1 ), due to differences in the canopy conductance, which followed the order of P. simonii (2.02 ± 0.18 mm/s) > U. pumila (1.70 ± 0.15 mm/s) > P. tabuliformis (1.26 ± 0.11 mm/s) ( P < 0.05). Under severe soil water stress, high vapor pressure deficit , and high solar radiation, transpiration was reduced in all species during the drought period in 2022 because of reduced canopy conductance ( P < 0.05). Our findings demonstrate that a fast growth rate, deep root systems, and close relationships between the leaf water potential and stomatal regulation are vital strategies for trees responding to drought. Consequently, we recommend P. simonii for shelter forests and P. tabuliformis for ecological landscape forests to improve the stability of afforestation in semi-arid regions.

Abstract:The positive correlation between diversity and production has been extensively documented. Given the intrinsic relationship between production and plant water consumption, it was anticipated that mixed forests would exhibit different water use compared to pure forests. In this study, the responses of water use to vapour pressure deficit were analyzed by monitoring the sap flow of Schima superba in both pure and mixed forests, as well as Castanopsis chinensis in mixed forest. Additionally, the relationships among leaf and stem traits were examined by measuring specific leaf area (SLA), N and P concentration per unit leaf mass, leaf δ 18 O and δ 13 C and wood density of sapwood (WD) during both wet and dry seasons. The results showed that S. superba demonstrated a comparable regulation of water use during both wet and dry seasons in mixed forest, whereas it exhibited less strict water use regulation during the wet season in comparison to the dry season in pure forest. Regardless of whether the forests were pure or mixed, both leaf δ 13 C and WD remained consistent across seasons, while there was an increase in SLA during the wet season compared to the dry season for S. superba . There was a different seasonal change in leaf δ 18 O for S. superba in pure and mixed forests. Water use and leaf economic spectrum may determine the adaptive strategies of coexisting species, and the coexisting tree species in mixed forest exhibited a resource-use differentiation, as indicated by seasonal variations in leaf and stem traits, likely explaining the conserved responses of sap flow to evaporative demand. Our research might provide insights into the impact of tree interaction on water use strategies and the water use-based forest management under current climate change.

Abstract:Southern China houses the largest subtropical broadleaf forest in the world, with abundant rainfall brought by the Pacific and Indian monsoons. As the intensity and frequency of drought are increasing, understanding the water use patterns of co-occurring trees is a key issue for predicting the response of these subtropical forests. The water uptake depths and water use-related leaf traits of three dominant canopy tree species at different ages (DBH) were investigated in a subtropical forest (2018-2019). We found that the delta H-2 and delta O-18 of various water pools, such as fog, soil, stream, lake, and groundwater, plotted almost entirely on the local meteoric water lines (2018: y = 8.2x +11.5; 2019: y = 8.1x +10.4). This result suggested that water bodies within the forest experienced minor evaporation. An interspecific partitioning of water acquisition was detected among tree species of similar ages in 2018 (a regular year), but they tapped soil water from similar depths after experiencing drought event in 2019. Most large (DBH > 50 cm) and middle-sized (15 cm < DBH < 30 cm) trees switched their major water sources from shallow (2018) to deep (2019) soil layers, whereas the seedlings (DBH < 2 cm) relied on shallow soil water during the study periods. The water use patterns of different trees were related to the leaf-level intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) and specific leaf area (SLA). The spatial-temporal differentiation of water use in regular years can facilitate plant co-existence among the canopy trees, but the interspecific competition for similar water sources in drought years may increase the risk of tree dieback in the subtropical forests. These fingdings provide a mechanistic explanation for the high diversity of subtropical forests in China from the perspective of differentiation in plant water use.
Hysteresis in sap flow and its controlling mechanisms for a deciduous broad-leaved tree species in a humid karst region

Abstract:The critical zone (CZ) represents the intersection of the biosphere with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. Understanding the hydrological processes and human impact factors on the CZ is fundamental to sustainable water resources management for agroforestry. Transpiration (T) is an important component of terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET), and understanding the time lag (TL) between vegetation transpiration and meteorological factors can improve our knowledge of the mechanisms of vegetation adaptability to a changing environment. However, the controlling factors on the TL remain poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study is identifying the temporal dynamics of key controlling factors on the TL, using a typical deciduous broad-leaved tree species (Zenia insigins Chun) of CZ in subtropical humid karst regions. This species is used as an example to explore the characteristics of the TL between SF (sap flow) and hydro-meteorological forcing. Sap flow in these 6 trees was monitored using the thermal dissipation probes (TDP). Results showed that: (1) the peak of diurnal sap flow generally lagged behind PAR but preceded Ta (air temperature), RH (relative humidity) and VPD (vapor pressure deficit), with the mean TL of −67.4 min (PAR), 90.5 min (Ta), 91.6 min (RH) and 92.9 min (VPD), respectively; (2) TL had no significant relationships with the daily mean meteorological factors and soil moisture, but was highly (R2>0.66) correlated to CRs (changing rates of meteorological factors) in the morning; (3) At seasonal scale, the sap flow rate and TL both were controlled by the seasonality of precipitation and temperature. Overall, the seasonality of the TL was caused by plants’ high water loss and strongly active physiological response in hot seasons, leading to close stomata earlier than in cold seasons; (4) The reason why CRs proposed can explain the TL better than mean values of metrological factors is that the CRs considered the distribution and change processes of metrological factors in the daytime. This study may be helpful for understanding the physiological response of vegetation to climatic change, and may be useful for constructing models to simulate transpiration processes more accurately during a day.

Responses of sap flow in Larix principis-rupprechtii to environment under different weather conditions

Abstract:This study was conducted in Liupanshan Forest Ecological Positioning Station of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. We monitored sap flow of Larix principis-rupprechtii plantation in the Xiangshui River sub-basin throughout the 2019 growing season (from May 17 to October 12), as well as the meteorological conditions and soil environment (soil temperature and soil water content), to analyze the comprehensive environmental responses of sap flow in L. principis-rupprechtii under different weather conditions. The results showed that sap flow rate increased and then decreased on the daily scale, with the highest rate on sunny days, followed by overcast days and then rainy days. Sap flow rate had a single peak on sunny days and multiple peaks on overcast and rainy days. Sunny days had earlier and longer sap flow compared to overcast and rainy days. Dominant factors driving sap flow differed across different weather. Vapor pressure deficit was the dominant factor influencing sap flow in sunny and overcast days, while solar radiation was dominant one in rainy days. The contribution rates of main factors to sap flow on sunny, overcast and rainy days were 31.1%, 27.4% and 40.1%, respectively. Results of the principal component analysis showed the factors affecting sap flow on sunny days could be classified into hydrothermal complex factors (air temperature, soil temperature, and volumetric soil moisture), water vapor transpiration factors (relative humidity and vapor pressure deficit), and radiation factor (solar radiation). The factors affecting sap flow on overcast and rainy days were combined into transpiration (relative humidity, solar radiation, and vapor pressure deficit), heat (air temperature and soil temperature), and soil water factor volumetric (volumetric soil moisture). On sunny days, sap flow reached the peak value 110, 80, 70 min after the hydrothermal, water vapor transpiration, and radiation factors, respectively. On overcast and rainy days, sap flow reached its peak in 10, 20, 30 min and 140, 60, 150 min, respectively before the peaks of transpiration, heat, and soil water factors.

Abstract:We investigated the seasonal water use patterns of five canopy tree species, Schima superba, Liquidambar formosana Hance, Quercus griffithii Hook, Quercus acutissima Carruth, Pinus massoniana in a subtropical secondary forest in Guangxi province, which were pervasively planted in South China. The hypothesis is that the trees can make different temporal use of environmental resources which change seasonally, and consequently contribute to their coexistence. Sap flow technique was used to measure the daily and seasonal transpiration during the period from June 2016 to May 2017. The sap flow ‐ derived daily transpiration (EL), leaf water potential (ΔΨ), hydraulic conductance (K), as well as the responses of EL to driving factor – water vapor pressure deficit (VPD) were determined in dry and wet seasons. Measured data of stem sap flow showed that L. formosana, Q. griffithii, and P. massoniana transpired more water than S. superba and Q. acutissima during the whole monitoring period, while daily EL of P. massoniana rapidly decreased under dry season. We attributed the different water use patterns to the significant difference in ΔΨ, K, and wood density among the five species. Moreover, linear relationships between the daily transpiration and VPD might suggest diverse water use strategies. For the species of S. superba, Q. acutissima, and P. massoniana, less water consumption and relatively flat change of transpiration with VPD were observed, suggesting a relatively tighter stomatal control. The slope values for L. formosana and Q. griffithii, which were much higher even under dry season, might own a weak stomatal control. These different functional and hydraulic traits, together with the associated water use strategies, might facilitate the coexistence of these five canopy tree species, which would assist in predicting the impact of future environmental changes on plant biodiversity and ecosystem services in the investigated region.

Abstract:In arid and semiarid regions with water shortage, forestry development is limited by water availability. Understanding how tree sap flow responds to water stress and microclimatic variables is essential for the management of trees and the understanding of the eco-physiological properties of trees in arid areas. In the city of Tianjin in northern China, we measured the sap flow of Fraxinus pennsylvanica , a widely distributed urban greening tree species in semiarid regions of China. We measured the sap flow in four F. pennsylvanica trees over 6 months (April–September 2021), using a thermal diffusion probe method, and simultaneously monitored microclimatic variables and soil moisture. Results indicated that high nighttime sap flow velocity might be produced under the water stress condition. In addition, the nighttime sap flow velocity under the water stress condition was more susceptible to the combined effects of meteorological factors at night. The daytime sap flow velocity exerted a highly significant positive effect on the nighttime sap flow velocity during the whole research period, and the model fit was higher in the early growing season than that in the late growing season (early growing season: R 2 = 0.51, P < 0.01; late growing season: R 2 = 0.36, P < 0.01). Vapor pressure deficit had a positive effect on daytime sap flow. However, net vapor pressure deficit restrained daytime sap flow velocity when the intercorrelation between the microclimatic variables was removed. Our study highlights that drought areas perhaps have higher nighttime sap flow and that more emphasis should be placed on nighttime sap flow and the response of nighttime sap flow to microclimatic variables. In addition, the influence of other microclimatic variables on vapor pressure deficit needs to be considered when analyzing the relationship between daytime sap flow and vapor pressure deficit. An increase in net VPD can suppress the daytime sap flow.

Abstract:Key messageVapor pressure deficit, soil water content, and daily maximum air temperature were the most important variables to affect sap flow.AbstractTree transpiration has a vital role in maintaining water balance in forest ecosystems, but how environmental variables affect transpiration is not clear at different altitudes in the regions of the arid mountains of China. With significant changes in water regimes in arid areas due to climate change, a greater understanding of transpiration responses to environmental variables will determine ecosystem health and management. Therefore, using the heat ratio method, sap flow in Qinghai spruce (Picea crassifolia) at different microenvironment conditions was monitored over 2 years (2016 and 2017) in the Qilian Mountains. Environmental variables were measured synchronously with sap flow. The random forests model showed that vapor pressure deficit (VPD), soil water content (SWC), and daily maximum air temperature (Tmax) were the most important variables to affect sap flow across four sites and two years. These results differed within sites and years. The important variables were VPD and SWC in 2016 due to lower precipitation, and VPD and Tmax in 2017. Meanwhile, the most important variables were VPD in 2016 and Tmax in 2017 at the high-elevation site, while opposite at the low-elevation site. Nonlinear models showed that sap flow decreased when VPD > 0.7–1.0 kPa, and saturated when Tmax > 15–20 °C. Sap flow was more sensitive to SWC at low than at high elevation. We concluded that VPD, SWC, and Tmax controlled sap flow in Qinghai spruce at these sites. Precipitation played a key role in controlling sap flow in different years, and altitudes affected the responses of sap flow to environmental variables within years.

Biophysical controls on canopy transpiration of Pinus tabulaeformis under different soil moisture conditions in the Loess Plateau of China

Abstract:Soil moisture is a critical variable controlling the processes of the Earth's energy-water-carbon cycles, balances and their feedback loops, which plays an important role in climate change prediction. However, soil moisture and meteorology are interrelated and interact through different ecological processes, resulting in variable and complex biophysical regulation of tree water use in water-scarce areas. This study selected Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. as the target tree species in the semiarid area of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Canopy transpiration ( E c ), soil water content ( SWC ), and meteorological variables were continuously monitored during the growing seasons (May–September) in 2015–2020. Throughout the study period, precipitation and SWC were crucial factors affecting E c and stomatal activity, and both were positively correlated with E c and canopy conductance ( G c ) on an annual scale. The threshold point of soil water stress for Pinus tabulaeformis was when the value of soil relative extractable water ( REW ) reached 0.36. Moreover, soil moisture can alter the response of E c to meteorological variables. Under soil water stress ( REW < 0.36), total solar radiation ( R s ) and SWC contributed the most to E c , and E c trended to decrease under high vapor pressure deficit ( VPD ) and air temperature ( T a ). At this point, VPD and T a significantly suppressed G c . In contrast, under non-water stress conditions ( REW ≥ 0.36), R s and VPD contributed more to E c than other variables. As VPD , R s , and T a rose, E c increased more quickly when REW ≥ 0.36, while VPD still exerted an inhibitory effect on G c to avoid excessive water loss. Our results suggest that Pinus tabulaeformis exhibits a drought avoidance water use strategy by controlling transpiration with strict stomatal regulation under soil water stress. These findings will contribute to understanding how the changing soil moisture affects tree transpiration regulation under the background of climate change in semiarid areas.

Abstract:Sap flow density(SFD)of 6 tress of Pinus elliottii in a plantation was continuously measured with Granier's thermal dissipation probe.In the meantime,several meteorological and soil factors were monitored and measured.In early growth stage,the whole xylem could be taken as sapwood.A significant correlation between sapwood area(SWA)and diameter at breast height(DBH)was found and was well fitted with quadratic model.SFD was well correlated with DBH(r2>0.99).Patterns of diurnal variation of the sap flow in sunny days were similar during rapid growth season,except that there was difference in the timing of initiating and reaching peaks as well as the intervals of ascending and descending.The daily average SFD tended to decline with time and it was highest in June,followed by July and then by August.SFD was linearly correlated with canopy temperature(CT),canopy relative humidity(CRH)and photosynthetically active radiation(PAR)in the stand.The strength of correlation with SFD was as follows:CRH>PAR>CT.Multivariant linear model between SFD and the integrated three factors was also established.All equations and correlation parameters were significant at the level of 0.01.

Abstract:More and more droughts happened during the last decades, threatening natural forests in the semi-arid regions of North China. The increase in drought pressure may have an impact on stand transpiration (T) in semi-arid regions due to rising temperature and changes in precipitation. It is unclear how the transpiration of natural forest in semi-arid regions respond to drought, which is regulated by environmental factors. In this study, a relatively simple but mechanism-based forest stand T model that couples the effects of the reference T, solar radiation (Rn), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and relative extractable water (REW) in the 0–80 cm soil layer was developed to quantify the independent impacts of Rn, VPD, and REW on T. The model was established based on the observed sap flow of four sample trees, and environmental factors were observed from May to September in different hydrological years (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2021) in a pure white birch (Betula platyphylla Sukaczev) forest stand in the southern section of the Greater Khingan Mountains, northeastern China. The sap flow data were used to calculate tree transpiration (Tt) and T to calibrate the T model. The results indicated that (1) The Tt sharply declined in the 'dry' year compared with that in the 'wetter' year. The daily Tt for small trees in the 'dry' year was only one-fifth of that in the 'wetter' year, and the daily Tt of large trees was 48% lower than that in the 'normal' year; (2) Large trees transpired more water than small trees, e.g., the daily Tt of small trees was 89% lower than that of the large trees in the 'normal' year; (3) Daily T increased with the increase in Rn, and the response conformed to a binomial function. Daily T responded to the rise of VPD and REW in an exponential function, first increasing rapidly, gradually reaching the threshold or peak value, and then stabilizing; (4) The driving factors for the T shift in different hydrological years were the REW in the 'dry' year, but the Rn and REW in the 'wet', 'normal', and 'wetter' years. The REW in the 'wet' and 'wetter' years exerted positive effects on T, but in the 'normal' and 'dry' year, exerted negative effects on T. Thus, the environmental factors affecting T were not the same in different hydrological years.

Abstract:Transpiration is a significant part of water cycle in forest ecosystems, influenced by meteorological factors and potentially constrained by soil moisture. We used Granier-type thermal dissipation probes to monitor xylem sap flow dynamics of three tree species (Quercus liaotungensis, Platycladus orientalis, and Robinia pseudoacacia) in a semi-arid loess hilly region, and to continuously monitor the key meteorological factors and soil water content (SWC). We established the SWC thresholds delineating soil moisture-limited and -unlimited sap flow responses to transpiration drivers. The results showed that mean sap flux density (Js) of Q. liaotungensis and R. pseudoacacia was significantly higher during period with higher soil moisture compared to lower soil moisture, while the difference in Js for P. orientalis between the two periods was not significant. We used an exponential saturation function to fit the relationship between the Js of each tree species and the integrated transpiration variable (VT) which reflected solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit. The difference in the fitting curve parameters indicated that there were distinct response patterns between Js and VT under different soil moisture conditions. There was a threshold in soil moisture limitation on sap flow for each species, which was identified as 0.129 m3·m-3 for Q. liaotungensis, 0.116 m3·m-3 for P. orientalis, and 0.108 m3·m-3 for R. pseudoacacia. Below the thresholds, Js was limited by soil moisture. Above these points, the normalized sensitivity index (NSI) for Q. liaotungensis and P. orientalis reached saturation, while that of R. pseudoacacia did not reach saturation but exhibited a significant reduction in moisture limitation. Among the three species, P. orientalis was the most capable of overcoming soil moisture constraints.

Abstract:Transpiration plays a vital role in determining the watershed water cycle. However, we still have little knowledge of the characteristics of tree transpiration in the Hanjiang River Basin, which is the water source for the middle route of South‐to‐North water diversion project. Here, we measured sap flux density of oak trees (Quercus, the dominant species here) at the 10‐min resolution for 2 years and explored its response to the environmental conditions. The incoming short‐wave radiation and vapour pressure deficit well explained the variation of daytime sap flux density, and a statistical model was then proposed to calculate the daytime sap flux density correspondingly; then a nighttime sap flux density module was proposed based on the daytime sap flux density calculation. Sap flux density showed clear counter‐clockwise hysteresis response to incoming short‐wave radiation, and clockwise hysteresis response to vapour pressure deficit. Our sap flux density model can well reproduce the corresponding hysteresis response to incoming short‐wave radiation and vapour pressure deficit. This study unravelled the environmental controls of sap flux density of the oak trees in the Hanjiang River Basin, proposed an efficient model for the sap flux density simulation, provided important knowledge for understanding the corresponding forests' water use, which is of critical significance in determining the water availability for the middle route of the South‐to‐North water diversion project.

Abstract:With ongoing climate change and rapid urbanization, the influence of extreme weather conditions on long-term nocturnal sap flow (Qn) dynamics in subtropical urban tree species is poorly understood despite the importance of Qn for the water budgets and development plantation. We continuously measured nighttime sap flow in Ficus concinna over multiple years (2014–2020) in a subtropical megacity, Shenzhen, to explore the environmental controls on Qn and dynamics in plant water consumption at different timescales. Nocturnally, Qn was shown to be positively driven by the air temperature (Ta), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and canopy conductance (expressed as a ratio of transpiration to VPD), yet negatively regulated by relative humidity (RH). Seasonally, variations in Qn were determined by VPD in fast growth, Ta, T/VPD, and meteoric water input to soils in middle growth, and RH in the terminal growth stages of the trees. Annual mean Qn varied from 2.87 to 6.30 kg d−1 with an interannual mean of 4.39 ± 1.43 kg d−1 (± standard deviation). Interannually, the key regulatory parameters of Qn were found to be Ta, T/VPD, and precipitation (P)-induced-soil moisture content (SMC), which individually explained 69, 63, 83, and 76% of the variation, respectively. The proportion of the nocturnal to the total 24-h sap flow (i.e., Qn/Q24-h × 100) ranged from 0.18 to 17.39%, with an interannual mean of 8.87%. It is suggested that high temperatures could increase transpirational demand and, hence, water losses during the night. Our findings can potentially assist in sustainable water management in subtropical areas and urban planning under increasing urban heat islands expected with future climate change.
Drought-Induced Alterations in Carbon and Water Dynamics of Chinese Fir Plantations at the Trunk Wood Stage

Abstract:Over the past three decades, China has implemented extensive reforestation programs, primarily utilizing Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook) in southern China, to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and counter extreme climate events. However, the effects of drought on the carbon sequestration capacity of these forests, particularly during the trunk wood stage, remain unclear. This study, conducted in Huitong, Hunan, China, from 2008 to 2013, employed the eddy covariance method to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) and water fluxes in Chinese fir forests, covering a severe drought year in 2011. The purpose was to elucidate the dynamics of carbon and water fluxes during a drought year and across multi-normal year averages. The results showed that changes in soil water content (−8.00%), precipitation (−18.45%), and relative humidity (−5.10%), decreases in air temperature (−0.09 °C) and soil temperature (−0.79 °C), and increases in vapor pressure deficit (19.18%) and net radiation (8.39%) were found in the drought year compared to the normal years. These changes in environmental factors led to considerable decreases in net ecosystem exchange (−40.00%), ecosystem respiration (−13.09%), and gross ecosystem productivity (−18.52%), evapotranspiration (−12.50%), and water use efficiency (−5.83%) in the studied forests in the drought year. In this study, the occurrence of seasonal drought due to uneven precipitation distribution led to a decrease in gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and evapotranspiration (ET). However, the impact of drought on GEP was greater than its effect on ET, resulting in a reduced water use efficiency (WUE). This study emphasized the crucial role of water availability in determining forest productivity and suggested the need for adjusting vegetation management strategies under severe drought conditions. Our results contributed to improving management practices for Chinese fir plantations in response to changing climate conditions.

Abstract:Quantifying the variation in stomatal behavior and functional traits of trees with elevation can provide a better understanding of the adaptative strategies to a changing climate. In this study, six water- and carbon-related functional traits were examined for three dominant tree species, Schima superba, Pinus massoniana and Castanopsis chinensis, in a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest at two elevations (70 and 360 m above sea level, respectively) in low subtropical China. We hypothesized that trees at higher elevations would develop more efficient strategies of stomatal regulations and greater water transport capacity to cope with more variable hydrothermal conditions than those at lower elevations. Results show that the hydraulic conductivity did not differ between trees at the two elevations, contrary to our expectation. The C. chinensis trees had greater values of leaf mass per unit area (LMA), and the S. superba and C. chinensis trees had greater values of wood density (WD), relative stem water content (RWC), and ratio of sapwood area to leaf area (H v) at the 360-m elevation than at 70-m elevation. The mean canopy stomatal conductance was greater and more sensitive to vapor deficit pressure at 360 m than at 70 m for both S. superba and C. chinensis, while stomatal sensitivity did not differ between the two contrasting elevations for P. massoniana. The midday leaf water potential (ψ L) in P. massoniana was significantly more negative at 360 m than at 70 m, but did not vary with increasing elevation in both S. superba and C. chinensis. Variations in H v can be related to the differential stomatal behaviors between the two elevations. The variations of stomatal behavior and ψ L with elevation suggested the isohydric strategy for the two broad-leaved species and the anisohydric strategy for the conifer species. The species-specific differences in LMA, WD, RWC, and H v between the two elevations may reflect conservative resource use strategies at the higher elevation. Our findings revealed a close relationship between hydraulic and stomatal behavior and may help better understand the functional responses of forests to changing environmental conditions.
