A canonical Hamiltonian for open quantum systems

Abstract:If an open quantum system is initially uncorrelated from its environment, then its dynamics can be written in terms of a Lindblad-form master equation. The master equation is divided into a unitary piece, represented by an effective Hamiltonian, and a dissipative piece, represented by a hermiticity-preserving superoperator; however, the division of open system dynamics into unitary and dissipative pieces is non-unique. For finite-dimensional quantum systems, we resolve this non-uniqueness by specifying a norm on the space of dissipative superoperators and defining the canonical Hamiltonian to be the one whose dissipator is minimal. We show that the canonical Hamiltonian thus defined is equivalent to the Hamiltonian initially defined by Lindblad, and that it is uniquely specified by requiring the dissipator's jump operators to be traceless, extending a uniqueness result known previously in the special case of Markovian master equations. For a system weakly coupled to its environment, we give a recursive formula for computing the canonical effective Hamiltonian to arbitrary orders in perturbation theory, which we can think of as a perturbative scheme for renormalizing the system's bare Hamiltonian.

Eigenstates and spectral projection for quantized baker's map

Abstract:We extend the approach from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2110.15301" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2110.15301">arXiv:2110.15301</a>] to prove windowed spectral projection estimates and a generalized Weyl law for the (Weyl) quantized baker's map on the torus. The spectral window is allowed to shrink. As a consequence, we obtain a strengthening of the quantum ergodic theorem from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math-ph/0412058" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math-ph/0412058">arXiv:math-ph/0412058</a>] to hold in shrinking spectral windows, a Weyl law on uniform spreading of eigenvalues, and statistics of random band-limited waves. Using similar techniques, we also investigate generic random eigenbases of a different (non-Weyl) quantization, the Walsh-quantized $D$-baker map, which has high degeneracies in its spectrum. For generic random eigenbases, we prove gaussian eigenstate statistics and QUE with high probability in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:The dynamics of a state of interest coupled to a non-Markovian environment is studied by concatenating the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation and the Feshbach projection-operator partitioning technique. An exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation is derived as a general tool for controlling an arbitrary component of the system. We show that the exact one-dimensional stochastic master equation can be efficiently solved beyond the widely adapted second-order master equations. The generality and applicability of this hybrid approach is justified and exemplified by several coherence control problems concerning quantum state protection against leakage and decoherence.

Abstract:We propose simple protocols for performing quantum noise spectroscopy based on the method of transfer tensor maps (TTM), [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 110401 (2014)]. The TTM approach is a systematic way to deduce the memory kernel of a time-nonlocal quantum master equation via quantum process tomography. With access to the memory kernel it is possible to (1) assess the non-Markovianity of a quantum process, (2) reconstruct the noise spectral density beyond pure dephasing models, and (3) investigate collective decoherence in multiqubit devices. We illustrate the usefulness of TTM spectroscopy on the IBM Quantum Experience platform, and demonstrate that the qubits in the IBM device are subject to mild non-Markovian dissipation with spatial correlations.

Abstract:In the context of quantum mechanics we employ the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators to recast the classical wavelet transform to a squeezing-displacing transform between the mother wavelet vector and the state vector to be transformed. In this way we propose the wavelet-transform spectrum for quantum optical states. For some typical states we obtain numerical results which imply that the spectrum can be used to recognize a variety of quantum optical states, and the inverse wavelet transform has the possibility to play a role in quantum state engineering.
Microcanonical Truncations of Observables in Quantum Chaotic Systems

Abstract:We consider the properties of an observable (such as a single spin component that squares to the identity) when expressed as a matrix in the basis of energy eigenstates, and then truncated to a microcanonical slice of energies of varying width. For a quantum chaotic system, we model the unitary or orthogonal matrix that relates the spin basis to the energy basis as a random matrix selected from the appropriate Haar measure. We find that the spectrum of eigenvalues is given by a centered Jacobi distribution that approaches the Wigner semicircle of a random hermitian matrix for small slices. For slices that contain more than half the states, there is a set of eigenvalues of exactly $\pm 1$. The transition to this qualitatively different behavior at half size is similar to that seen in other quantities such as entanglement entropy. Our results serve as a benchmark model for numerical calculations in realistic physical systems.

Abstract:By the newly developed technique of integration within an ordered product (IWOP) of operators, we explore quantum optical version of classical optical transformations such as optical Fresnel transform, Hankel transform, fractional Fourier transform, Wigner transform, wavelet transform and Fresnel-Hadmard combinatorial transform etc. In this way one may gain benefit for developing classical optics theory from the research in quantum optics, or vice-versa. We can not only find some new quantum mechanical unitary operators which correspond to the known optical transformations, deriving a new theorem for calculating quantum tomogram of density operators, but also can reveal some new classical optical transformations. We derive GFO's normal product form and its canonical coherent state representation and find that GFO is the loyal representation of symplectic group multiplication rule. We show that GFT is just the transformation matrix element of GFO in the coordinate representation such that two successive GFTs is still a GFT. The ABCD rule of the Gaussian beam propagation is directly demonstrated in the context of quantum optics. Especially, the introduction of quantum mechanical entangled state representations opens up a new area to finding new classical optical transformations. The complex wavelet transform and the condition of mother wavelet are studied in the context of quantum optics too. Throughout our discussions, the coherent state, the entangled state representation of the two-mode squeezing operators and the IWOP technique are fully used. All these confirms Dirac's assertion: " ... for a quantum dynamic system that has a classical analogue, unitary transformation in the quantum theory is the analogue of contact transformation in the classical theory".
Microscopic derivation of Open Quantum Walks

Abstract:Open Quantum Walks (OQWs) are exclusively driven by dissipation and are formulated as completely positive trace preserving (CPTP) maps on underlying graphs. The microscopic derivation of discrete and continuous in time OQWs is presented. It is assumed that connected nodes are weakly interacting via a common bath. The resulting reduced master equation of the quantum walker on the lattice is in the generalised master equation form. The time discretisation of the generalised master equation leads to the OQWs formalism. The explicit form of the transition operators establishes a connection between dynamical properties of the OQWs and thermodynamical characteristics of the environment. The derivation is demonstrated for the examples of the OQW on a circle of nodes and on a finite chain of nodes. For both examples a transition between diffusive and ballistic quantum trajectories is observed and found to be related to the temperature of the bath.

Quantum Random Walks and Quantum Oscillator in an Infinite-Dimensional Phase Space

Abstract:We consider quantum random walks in an infinite-dimensional phase space constructed using Weyl representation of the coordinate and momentum operators in the space of functions on a Hilbert space which are square integrable with respect to a shift-invariant measure. We study unitary groups of shift operators in the phase space and averaging of such shifts by Gaussian vectors, which form semigroups of self-adjoint contractions: we find conditions for their strong continuity and establish properties of their generators. Significant differences in their properties allow us to show the absence of the Fourier transform as a unitary transformation that implements the unitary equivalence of these compressive semigroups. Next, we prove the Taylor formula for a certain special subset of smooth functions for shifting to a non-finite vector. It allows us to prove convergence of quantum random walks in the coordinate representation to the evolution of a diffusion process, as well as convergence of quantum random walks in both coordinate and momentum representations to the evolution semigroup of a quantum oscillator in an infinite-dimensional phase space. We find the special essential common domain of generators of semigroups arising in averaging of random shift operators both in position and momentum representations. The invariance of this common domain with respect to both semigroups allows to establish properties of a convex combination of both generators. That convex combination are Hamiltonians of infinite-dimentional quantum oscillators. Thus, we obtain that a Weyl representation of a random walk in an infinite dimensional phase space describes the semigroup of self-adjoint contractions whose generator is the Hamiltonian of an infinite dimensional harmonic oscillator.

On Quantum Representation of the Linear Canonical Wavelet Transform

Abstract:For the efficient identification of quantum states, we propose the notion of linear canonical wavelet transform in the framework of quantum mechanics. Using the machinery of Dirac representation theory and integration within an ordered product of operators, we recast the linear canonical wavelet transform to a matrix element of the squeezing–displacing operator U(μ,s)KM between analyzing vector ⟨ψ| and two-mode quantum state vector |f⟩ to be transformed. We also derive the inner product relation and inversion formula for the linear canonical wavelet transform in the realm of quantum mechanics. Lastly, we present an explicit example for the lucid implementation of linear canonical wavelet transform in identifying the quantum states.

Abstract:We introduce the out-of-time-correlation (OTOC) with the Planck cell resolution. The dependence of this OTOC on the initial state makes it function like a microscope, allowing us to investigate the fine structure of quantum dynamics beyond the thermal state. We find an explicit relation of this OTOC to the spreading of the wave function in the Hilbert space, unifying two branches of the study of quantum chaos: state evolution and operator dynamics. A quantum Karhunen-Loeve expansion and quadratic-exponential functionals for linear quantum stochastic systems

Abstract:This paper extends the Karhunen-Loeve representation from classical Gaussian random processes to quantum Wiener processes which model external bosonic fields for open quantum systems. The resulting expansion of the quantum Wiener process in the vacuum state is organised as a series of sinusoidal functions on a bounded time interval with statistically independent coefficients consisting of noncommuting position and momentum operators in a Gaussian quantum state. A similar representation is obtained for the solution of a linear quantum stochastic differential equation which governs the system variables of an open quantum harmonic oscillator. This expansion is applied to computing a quadratic-exponential functional arising as a performance criterion in the framework of risk-sensitive control for this class of open quantum systems.

Quantum phase space with a basis of Wannier functions

Abstract:A quantum phase space with Wannier basis is constructed: (i) classical phase space is divided into Planck cells; (ii) a complete set of Wannier functions are constructed with the combination of Kohn's method and Löwdin method such that each Wannier function is localized at a Planck cell. With these Wannier functions one can map a wave function unitarily onto phase space. Various examples are used to illustrate our method and compare it to Wigner function. The advantage of our method is that it can smooth out the oscillations in wave functions without losing any information and is potentially a better tool in studying quantum-classical correspondence. In addition, we point out that our method can be used for time-frequency analysis of signals.

Wigner kernel and Gabor matrix of operators

Abstract:We exhibit the connection between the Wigner kernel and the Gabor matrix of a linear bounded operator T : $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d) \to \mathcal{S}' (\mathbb{R}^d)$. The smoothing effect of the Gabor matrix is highlighted by basic examples. This connection allows a comparison between the classes of Fourier integral operators defined by means of the Gabor matrix and the Wigner kernel, showing the nice off-diagonal decay of the Gabor class with respect to the Wigner kernel one and suggesting further investigations. Modulation spaces containing the Sjöstrand class are the symbol classes of this study.

Next, we establish new uncertainty principles for the Fourier and the windowed Fourier transforms associated with the spherical mean operator. Emergence of unitary symmetry of microcanonically truncated operators in chaotic quantum systems

Abstract:We study statistical properties of matrix elements of observables written in the energy eigenbasis and truncated to small microcanonical windows. We present numerical evidence indicating that for all few body operators in chaotic many-body systems, truncated below certain energy scale, collective statistical properties of matrix elements exhibit emergent unitary symmetry. Namely, we show that below certain scale the spectra of the truncated operators exhibit universal behavior, matching our analytic predictions, which are numerically testable for system sizes beyond exact diagonalization. We discuss operator and system-size dependence of the energy scale of emergent unitary symmetry and put our findings in context of previous works exploring emergence of random-matrix behavior at small energy scales.

Abstract:To understand the typical dynamics of an open quantum system in continuous time, we introduce an ensemble of random Lindblad operators, which generate completely positive Markovian evolution in the space of the density matrices. The spectral properties of these operators, including the shape of the eigenvalue distribution in the complex plane, are evaluated by using methods of free probabilities and explained with non-Hermitian random matrix models. We also demonstrate the universality of the spectral features. The notion of an ensemble of random generators of Markovian quantum evolution constitutes a step towards categorization of dissipative quantum chaos.
