Abstract:This paper extends the Karhunen-Loeve representation from classical Gaussian random processes to quantum Wiener processes which model external bosonic fields for open quantum systems. The resulting expansion of the quantum Wiener process in the vacuum state is organised as a series of sinusoidal functions on a bounded time interval with statistically independent coefficients consisting of noncommuting position and momentum operators in a Gaussian quantum state. A similar representation is obtained for the solution of a linear quantum stochastic differential equation which governs the system variables of an open quantum harmonic oscillator. This expansion is applied to computing a quadratic-exponential functional arising as a performance criterion in the framework of risk-sensitive control for this class of open quantum systems.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to extend the classical Karhunen - Loeve expansion method to the quantum field, especially for the quantum Wiener process describing the external Bose field. Specifically, the authors developed a quantum Karhunen - Loeve (QKL) representation for the quantum Wiener process in the vacuum state, which consists of non - commutative position and momentum operators that are statistically independent in Gaussian quantum states. In addition, they also studied the application of this expansion in solving linear quantum stochastic differential equations (QSDEs), which describe the evolution of variables in open quantum harmonic oscillator systems.
Through this method, the author was able to calculate a quadratic exponential function (QEF), which appears as a performance index in the risk - sensitive control framework. Minimization of the QEF can be achieved by appropriately selecting a quantum controller or filter, making the closed - loop system more conservative, less sensitive to large deviations of quantum trajectories, and more robust to quantum statistical uncertainties described by quantum relative entropy. This property makes the calculation of QEF an important robust performance analysis problem.
The main contributions of the paper are:
1. **Quantum Karhunen - Loeve Expansion**: Provided an expansion form based on sine functions for the quantum Wiener process, whose coefficients are non - commutative position and momentum operators.
2. **Solution of Linear Quantum Stochastic Systems**: Using the QKL expansion, obtained the solutions of variables in open quantum harmonic oscillator systems, which are driven by linear QSDEs.
3. **Calculation of Quadratic Exponential Function**: Proposed a method for calculating QEF, which is of great significance in quantum control theory, especially in risk - sensitive control and robust performance analysis.
Through these works, the paper provides new tools and methods for dealing with complex dynamics problems in open quantum systems.
