Abstract:Hawking radiation is the proposed thermal black-body radiation of quantum nature emitted from a black hole. One common way to give an account of Hawking radiation is to consider a detector that follows a static trajectory in the vicinity of a black hole and interacts with the quantum field of the radiation. In the present work, we study the Hawking radiation perceived by a detector that follows a quantum superposition of static trajectories in Schwarzschild spacetime, instead of a unique well-defined trajectory. We analyze the quantum state of the detector after the interaction with a massless real scalar field. We find that for certain trajectories and excitation levels, there are non-vanishing coherences in the final state of the detector. We then examine the dependence of these coherences on the trajectories followed by the detector and relate them to the distinguishability of the different possible states in which the field is left after the excitation of the detector. We interpret our results in terms of the spatial distribution and propagation of particles of the quantum field.

Abstract:We study particle production in Vaidya spacetime. Using the WKB approximation, the distribution of Hawking radiation is calculated without the near-horizon approximation, which leads to finite corrections to the purely thermal spectrum. We extend our analysis to extremal and non-extremal Reissner-Nordström and Kerr black holes. Our results can be understood in terms of a thermodynamic toy model, where one regards Hawking radiation as Unruh radiation perceived by observers outside of the black hole. Moreover, we extend the model to incorporate the backreaction of Hawking quanta on spacetime geometry. Our study suggests that the backreaction may prevent the formation of the event horizon and spacetime singularity.

Abstract:We show that "particle production" by gravitational field, especially the Hawking effect, may be treated as some quantum inertial effect, with the energy of Hawking radiation as some vacuum energy shift. This quantum inertial effect is mainly resulted from some intrinsical energy fluctuation $\hbar\kappa/c$ for a black hole. In particular, there is an extreme case in which $\hbar\kappa/c$ is the Planck energy, giving a "Planck black hole" whose event horizon's diameter is one Planck length. Moreover, we also provide a possibility to obtain some positive cosmological constant for an expanding universe, which is induced from the vacuum energy shift caused by quantum inertial effect.

Abstract:We examine the Hawking effect by studying the asymptotic entanglement of two mutually independent two-level atoms placed at a fixed radial distance outside a Schwarzschild black hole in the framework of open quantum systems. We treat the two-atom system as an open quantum system in a bath of fluctuating quantized massless scalar fields in vacuum and calculate the concurrence, a measurement of entanglement, of the equilibrium state of the system at large times, for the Unruh, Hartle-Hawking and Boulware vacua respectively. We find, for all three vacuum cases, that the atoms turn out to be entangled even if they are initially in a separable state as long as the system is not placed right at the even horizon. Remarkably, only in the Unruh vacuum, will the asymptotic entanglement be affected by the backscattering of the thermal radiation off the space-time curvature. The effect of the back scatterings on the asymptotic entanglement cancels in the Hartle-Hawking vacuum case.

Hawking Radiation in Lorentz Violating Gravity: A Tale of Two Horizons

Abstract:Since their proposal, Lorentz violating theories of gravity have posed a potential threat to black hole thermodynamics, as superluminal signals appeared to be incompatible with the very black hole notion. Remarkably, it was soon realized that in such theories causally disconnected regions of space-time can still exist thanks to the presence of universal horizons: causal barriers for signals of arbitrary high speed. Several investigations, sometimes with contrasting results, have been performed so to determine if these horizons can be associated with healthy thermodynamic properties similar to those associated with Killing horizons in General Relativity. In this work we offer what we deem to be the final picture emerging from this and previous studies. In summary we show that: 1) there is a thermal, and most of all species-independent, emission associated to universal horizons, determined by their surface gravity; 2) due to the modified dispersion relation of the matter fields, the low energy part of the emitted spectrum is affected by the presence of the Killing horizon, in a way similar to an effective refractive index, leading at low energies (w.r.t. the Lorentz breaking scale) to an emission that mimics a standard Hawking spectrum (i.e. one determined by the Killing horizon surface gravity); 3) the whole picture is compatible with a globally well defined vacuum state i.e. an Unruh state associated with preferred observers, which however at very low energies it is basically indistinguishable from the standard Unruh vacuum associated to metric free-falling observers. One can then conclude that Hawking radiation is remarkably resilient even within the context of gravitational theories entailing the breakdown of local Lorentz invariance.

We employ a holography-inspired technique to derive the Bogoliubov coefficients. We consider both black holes in equilibrium and black holes attached to a bath. In the latter case, we compute semiclassical deviations from the thermal spectrum.

Abstract:In string theories, interactions are exponentially suppressed for trans-Planckian space-like external momenta. We study a class of quantum field theories that exhibit this feature modeled after Witten's bosonic open string field theory, and discover a Lorentz-invariant UV/IR relation that leads to the spacetime uncertainty principle proposed by Yoneya. Application to a dynamical black hole background suggests that Hawking radiation is turned off around the scrambling time.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics D, Ahead of Print. The conformal scalar propagator as an explicit function of the Schwarzschild black-hole space-time has been established in the preceding three projects. The present project examines the precise relation which that propagator has to the amplitude the Schwarzschild black hole emit a scalar particle in a particular mode of positive energy. It is thereby established that the effect of infinite time-dilation on the event horizon results in both, the thermal radiation in the background of a static exterior space-time geometry and the detraction from thermality if energy-conservation is properly imposed as a constraint on scalar propagation. The derivation of the latter signifies an equivalent approach to the result of Parikh and Wilczek from the semi-classical perspective of the distant observer. From that perspective for that matter, Hawking radiation emerges in both contexts as the exclusive consequence of infinite time-dilation on the event horizon. These results are consistent with Hawking radiation as the exclusive consequence of the causal structure of the Schwarzschild black-hole space-time both, in a static exterior geometry and in such dynamical exterior geometry as energy-conservation signifies. The extension of the thermal case to other spin-fields and black-hole geometries is discussed.

Abstract:We show that there is a remarkable phase in quantum gravity where gravitational scattering amplitudes mediated by virtual gravitons can be calculated explicitly in effective field theory, when the impact parameter b satisfies LPl≪b≲RS , with RS being the Schwarzschild radius. This phase captures collisions with energies satisfying s≫γMPl (with γ∼MPl/MBH ) near the horizon. We call this the black hole eikonal phase, in contrast to its flat space analog where collisions are trans-Planckian. Hawking's geometric optics approximation neglects gravitational interactions near the horizon, and results in thermal occupation numbers in the Bogoliubov coefficients. We show that these interactions are mediated by graviton exchange in 2→2 scattering near the horizon, and explicitly calculate the S -matrix nonperturbatively in MPl/MBH . This involves a resummation of infinitely many ladder diagrams near the horizon, all mediated by virtual soft gravitons. The S -matrix turns out to be a pure phase upon this resummation and is agnostic of Planckian physics and any specific ultraviolet completion. Semiclassical Dynamics of Hawking Radiation

Abstract:We consider gravity in 3+1 spacetime dimensions coupled to $N$ scalar matter fields in a semiclassical limit where $N\to\infty$. The dynamical evolution of a black hole including the back-reaction of the Hawking radiation on the metric is formulated as an initial value problem. The quantum stress energy tensor is evaluated using a point splitting regularization along spacelike geodesics. To account for the quantum entanglement of the matter fields, they are treated as a set of bilocal collective fields defined on spacelike hypersurfaces. The resulting semiclassical field equations include terms up to fourth order in derivatives that can be treated in a perturbative $\hbar$ expansion. The formulation we arrive at should be amenable to numerical simulation of time dependent semiclassical spacetime.

Abstract:The original derivation of Hawking radiation shows the complete evaporation of black holes. However, theories of quantum gravity predict the existence of the minimal observable length. In this paper, we investigate the tunneling radiation of the scalar particles by introducing quantum gravity effects influenced by the generalized uncertainty principle. The Hawking temperatures are not only determined by the properties of the black holes, but also affected by the quantum numbers of the emitted particles. The quantum gravity corrections slow down the increase of the temperatures. The remnants are found during the evaporation.

Abstract:We consider the so-called Hopfield model for the electromagnetic field in a dielectric dispersive medium in a framework in which one allows a space-time dependence of microscopic parameters, aimed to a phenomenological description of a space-time varying dielectric perturbation induced by means of the Kerr effect. We discuss the analogue Hawking effect, by first analyzing the geometrical optics for the Hopfield model, and then by introducing a simplified model which has the bonus to avoid many difficulties which are involved in the full Hopfield model, still keeping the same dispersion relation. Amplitude calculations are indicated, and generalized Manley-Rowe identities are derived in a quantum scattering theory framework. Our main result is an analytical calculation of the spontaneous thermal emission in the single-branch case, which is provided non perturbatively for the first time in the framework of dielectric black holes. An universal mechanism for thermality between optical black holes and acoustic black holes is also pointed out.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Hawking radiation of the quantum Oppenheimer- Snyde black hole with the tunneling scheme by Parikh and Wilczek. We calculate the emission rate of massless scalar particles. Compared to the traditional results within the framework of General Relativity, our findings include quantum correction terms arising from loop quantum gravity effects. Following the approach in [1, 2], we establish the entropy of the black hole. This entropy includes a logarithmic correction, which arises from quantum gravity effects. Our result is consistent with the well-known result in the context of quantum gravity.

On the Resilience of Black Hole Evaporation: Gravitational Tunneling through Universal Horizons

Abstract:Using a quantum tunneling derivation, we show the resilience of Hawking radiation in Lorentz violating gravity. In particular, we show that the standard derivation of the Hawking effect in relativistic quantum field theory can be extended to Lorentz breaking situations thanks to the presence of universal horizons (causal boundaries for infinite speed signals) inside black hole solutions. Correcting previous studies, we find that such boundaries are characterized by a universal temperature governed by their surface gravity. We also show that within the tunneling framework, given the pole structure and the tunneling path, only a vacuum state set in the preferred frame provides a consistent picture. Our results strongly suggest that the robustness of black hole thermodynamics is ultimately linked to the consistency of quantum field theories across causal boundaries.

Abstract:The generalized uncertainty relation is expected to be an essential element in a theory of quantum gravity. In this work, we examine its effect on the Hawking radiation of a Schwarzschild black hole formed from collapse by incorporating a minimal uncertainty length scale into the radial coordinate of the background. This is implemented in both the ingoing Vaidya coordinates and a family of freely falling coordinates. We find that, regardless of the choice of the coordinate system, Hawking radiation is turned off at around the scrambling time. Interestingly, this phenomenon occurs while the Hawking temperature remains largely unmodified.

Abstract:The pineal hormone melatonin (N-acetyl-5methoxytryptamine) is extensively used to assess circadian rhythm status, especially in human studies, and for endocrine investigations.' Salivary melatonin measurements provide a readily accessible means of obtaining temporally discrete data on the rhythm of melatonin secretion as an alternative to plasma or urine.2-4 Significant positive correlation between salivary melatonin and both plasma melatonin concentrations and the excretion of the major metabolite 6-sulphatoxymelatonin has been described.v' We report here a novel direct saliva radioimmunoassay (RIA) using 125I-2-iodomelatonin as radioligand and a choice of solid or liquid phase second antibody separation system. The solid phase system enables results to be obtained within a single working day. Rabbit anti-melatonin antiserum.! prepared by Dr J P Ravault (INRA, Tours, France) and donkey anti-rabbit IgG were obtained from Stockgrand Ltd (University of Surrey, Guildford, UK). Cellulose linked donkey anti-rabbit IgG (SAC-CEL, AASacl) was bought from IDS (Boldon Business Park, Tyne & Wear, UK), and 125I-2-iodomelatonin from Amersham International (Aylesbury, UK). A melatonin-free saliva pool was prepared using an affinity column of sheep-antimelatonin antiserum (Stockgrand Ltd) conjugated to aldehyde-activated, controlled-pore aminoglass (a gift from Dr P Kwasowski of ClifMar Associates, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK). Saliva samples (n = 83) were collected from healthy volunteers, who had not eaten, drunk or smoked within the previous 45 min, at different times of day and night. Samples were stored at 20°C. After thawing they were centrifuged to remove particulate matter before assaying using two different assay configurations.
Geometric Hawking radiation of Schwarzschild Black Hole with novel quantum algebra

Abstract:In the context of an extended General Relativity theory with boundary terms included, we introduce a new nonlinear quantum algebra involving a quantum differential operator, with the aim to calculate quantum geometric alterations when a particle is created in the vicinity of a Schwarzschild black-hole by the Hawking radiation mechanism. The boundary terms in the varied action give rise to modifications in the geometric background, which are investigated by analyzing the metric tensor and the Ricci curvature within the framework of a renormalized quantum theory of gravity.

Abstract:The spacetime inside the white hole is like an anisotropic cosmological background with the past singularity playing the role of a big bang singularity. The scale factor along the extended spatial direction is contracting while the scale factor along the two-sphere is expanding. We consider an eternal Schwarzschild manifold and study quantum cosmological perturbations generated near the white hole singularity which propagate towards the past event horizon and to exterior of the black hole. It is shown that an observer deep inside the white hole and an observer far outside the black hole both share the same vacuum. We calculate the Hawking radiation associated to these quantum white hole perturbations as measured by an observer in the exterior of the black hole. Furthermore, we also consider the Hawking radiation for the general case where the initial cosmological perturbations deep inside the white hole are in "non-vacuum" state yielding to a deviation from Planck distribution. This analysis suggests that if the black hole is not entirely black (due to Hawking radiation) then the white hole is not entirely white either.
