Abstract:Since their proposal, Lorentz violating theories of gravity have posed a potential threat to black hole thermodynamics, as superluminal signals appeared to be incompatible with the very black hole notion. Remarkably, it was soon realized that in such theories causally disconnected regions of space-time can still exist thanks to the presence of universal horizons: causal barriers for signals of arbitrary high speed. Several investigations, sometimes with contrasting results, have been performed so to determine if these horizons can be associated with healthy thermodynamic properties similar to those associated with Killing horizons in General Relativity. In this work we offer what we deem to be the final picture emerging from this and previous studies. In summary we show that: 1) there is a thermal, and most of all species-independent, emission associated to universal horizons, determined by their surface gravity; 2) due to the modified dispersion relation of the matter fields, the low energy part of the emitted spectrum is affected by the presence of the Killing horizon, in a way similar to an effective refractive index, leading at low energies (w.r.t. the Lorentz breaking scale) to an emission that mimics a standard Hawking spectrum (i.e. one determined by the Killing horizon surface gravity); 3) the whole picture is compatible with a globally well defined vacuum state i.e. an Unruh state associated with preferred observers, which however at very low energies it is basically indistinguishable from the standard Unruh vacuum associated to metric free-falling observers. One can then conclude that Hawking radiation is remarkably resilient even within the context of gravitational theories entailing the breakdown of local Lorentz invariance.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is whether black - hole thermodynamics still holds in the gravitational theory with Lorentz symmetry breaking, especially whether Hawking radiation still exists and what its characteristics are. Specifically, the paper explores whether there is thermal radiation related to the Universal Horizon (UH) in the gravitational theory with Lorentz symmetry breaking, and whether this radiation has properties similar to those of standard Hawking radiation.
### Background of the Paper
In traditional general relativity, black holes are considered to emit thermal radiation through Hawking radiation, and its temperature is given by the Bekenstein - Hawking formula \(T=\frac{1}{8\pi M}\), where \(M\) is the mass of the black hole. This conclusion depends on the local properties of spacetime geometry, such as covariance and diffeomorphism invariance. However, in the gravitational theory with Lorentz symmetry breaking, due to the introduction of a unit - gauge - like time - like dynamical vector field \(U^{\mu}\) (called ether), the causal structure of spacetime has changed, allowing superluminal propagation, which makes the event horizon in the traditional sense meaningless.
### Main Problems of the Paper
1. **Thermal Radiation of the Universal Horizon**:
- Does the Universal Horizon (UH) have related thermal radiation?
- Is this radiation species - independent, that is, is its temperature determined by the surface gravity of the Universal Horizon?
2. **Influence of the Low - Energy Spectrum**:
- Since the dispersion relation of the matter field is modified, is the emission spectrum of the low - energy part affected by the time - like horizon (Killing Horizon, KH)?
- Can the low - energy spectrum simulate the standard Hawking radiation spectrum?
3. **Compatibility of Quantum States**:
- Does there exist a globally defined vacuum state, such as the Unruh state related to a specific observer?
- At very low energies, is this vacuum state basically indistinguishable from the standard Unruh vacuum state?
### Conclusions of the Paper
Through detailed analysis and calculation, the paper draws the following conclusions:
1. **Thermal Radiation of the Universal Horizon**:
- There is a thermal radiation related to the Universal Horizon, its temperature is determined by the surface gravity of the Universal Horizon, and this radiation is species - independent.
2. **Influence of the Low - Energy Spectrum**:
- Since the dispersion relation of the matter field is modified, the emission spectrum of the low - energy part is affected by the time - like horizon, similar to an effective refractive index. At low energies (relative to the Lorentz symmetry - breaking scale), the emission spectrum simulates the standard Hawking radiation spectrum.
3. **Compatibility of Quantum States**:
- The whole picture is compatible with a globally defined vacuum state, that is, the Unruh state related to a specific observer. At very low energies, this vacuum state is basically indistinguishable from the standard Unruh vacuum state.
### Summary
The paper shows that even in the gravitational theory with Lorentz symmetry breaking, Hawking radiation is still robust. The existence of the Universal Horizon makes black - hole thermodynamics preserved, although the radiation spectrum may be different in some cases. These results are of great significance for understanding black - hole physics in the Lorentz symmetry - breaking theory.
