Abstract:Macrophages perform multiple functions in both inflammation and wound healing, and are one of the fore front cells during implant osseointegration that influence subsequent process. Essential trace element modification may effectively modulate titanium implant surface biological properties. In this work, strontium (Sr) incorporated micro/nano rough titanium surfaces (Sr-SLA) was fabricated by hydrothermal treatment, and immunoreaction of macrophages was further investigated. In vitro results revealed that Sr doping inhibited inflammatory response of macrophages, further attenuated the inhibitory effect on following bone marrow derived cells (BMSCs) osteogenic differentiation. The regulation of macrophages by Sr-SLA likely involved ERK signaling pathway. Consistently, the in vivo study showed that compared with titanium surface sand-blasted with large grit and double acid-etched (SLA) implants, Sr-SLA implants could enhance new bone formation accompanied with more alternatively activated M2 macrophages infiltration and less classically activated M1 macrophages infiltration. These results reveal the immunomodulatory ability of Sr-SLA of adjusting the functional status of macrophages through inhibiting M1 polarization while promoting M2 polarization.

Abstract:Recruitment of endogenous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) has been widely discussed as an alternative strategy for bone regeneration. Strontium (Sr) is known to direct the BMSCs' commitment to the bone lineage and encourage bone formation; however, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, an Sr-incorporated micro/nano rough titanium surface (MNT-Sr) was fabricated by hydrothermal treatment in an attempt to facilitate BMSCs' recruitment and their osteogenic differentiation to enhance rapid osseointegration. Micro rough titanium (MT) was set as the control biomaterial. In vitro, MNT-Sr and its extracts promoted the migration and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. In animal studies, green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled BMSCs were intravenously injected into wild-type rats for tracing before tibial implantation surgery. The GFP+BMSC recruitment to the implantation site was successfully triggered by MNT-Sr implantation. A trend for increased bone area (BA%), bone-implant contact (BIC%) and removal torque values (RTVs) was observed for the MNT-Sr implant compared to that observed for MT at 2 weeks. Advanced mechanism analysis indicated that Sr2+ enhanced the SDF-1α/CXCR4 signaling pathway both in vitro and in vivo. Taken together, these findings suggest that MNT-Sr has promising therapeutic potential for future use in dental implants by homing endogenous stem cells to stimulate bone regeneration.

Abstract:Osseointegration involves a series of sophisticated physiological processes including osteoimmune responses, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. However, a comprehensive process optimization to tackle the dilemma of the prolonged implant osseointegration still remains a challenge. In this study, we designed a micro/nanoscaled hierarchical topography and simultaneously incorporated strontium ions and zinc ions onto titanium surface (SLA-Sr/Zn). SLA-Sr/Zn exhibited potent pro-angiogenic capacity in vitro by expressing essential angiogenic genes and activating Akt/HIF-1α signaling pathway of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Meanwhile, SLA-Sr/Zn exerted robust osteogenic potential by facilitating bone mesenchymal stem cells osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, the continuous release of dual ions orchestrated a favorable osteoimmune microenvironment by modulating macrophage polarization towards M2a phenotype and up-regulated expression of platelet-derived growth factor. In vivo study corroborated the excellent efficacy of SLA-Sr/Zn implant on promoting vascularized osseointegration by augmenting type H vessel generation. Collectively, the distinct SLA-Sr/Zn titanium implant surface exerted versatile biological functions in angiogenesis, osteogenesis and osteoimmunomodulation, rendering its therapeutic potential for rapidly vascularized osseointegration.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare strontium-containing implant (Sr-Ti) surfaces with modified pure Ti (Mod Ti) on the promotion of osteogenesis in vitro and in vivo. Materials and Methods: The Sr-Ti surfaces were fabricated by hydrothermal treatment. The Mod Ti surfaces were used as a control. These surfaces were characterized with scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometer, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The biologic activity was analyzed by initial adhesion, proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin, and osteogenesis-related genes in vitro. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and immunohistochemistry analysis of tissue adjacent to this implant were used to evaluate osteogenic activity in vivo. Results: The results confirmed multiple nanogranules on the Sr-Ti surface composed of well-crystallized TiO2 and SrTiO3 phases. Long-term release of Sr enhanced mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) initial adhesion, the production of ALP, osteocalcin, and upregulated osteogenesis-related genes. For in vivo osteogenic evaluation, mesenchymal-like cells were adhered on these two surfaces under the electron microscope and transitory hematoma in adjacent bone tissue by H&E staining. The Stro-1-labeled MSCs were noted around the Sr-Ti surface in immunohistochemistry analysis. Conclusion: This study suggests that Sr-Ti surfaces with nanostructures could promote the response of MSCs in vitro, and recruit Stro-1 labeled MSCs in vivo.
Effects of the micro-nano surface topography of titanium alloy on the biological responses of osteoblast

Abstract:In clinical applications, osseointegration is essential for the long-term stability of dental implants. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of natural bone, we applied the electrochemical etching (EC) technique to form a micro-nano structure on a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) substrate, called EC surface. Sand blasting and acid etching (SLA) and machined (M) methods were employed to generate micro and smooth textures, respectively, as the control groups. The surface topographies of the three substrates were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, human osteoblast-like cells (MG63) were cultured on substrates, and adhesion, proliferation, morphology, alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), and gene expression levels of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), osteocalcin (OCN), osteopontin (OPN), and type I collagen (COLIA 1) were analyzed. MG63 cells cultured on the EC Ti alloy substrates displayed better cell adhesion, significant proliferation, and a higher production level of ALP, gene expressions of RUNX2, OCN, OPN and COLIA 1 (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05) compared with those of SLA and M substrates. These results indicate that the micro-nano structure fabricated by electrochemical etching method is beneficial for the biological functions of MG63 cells and may be a promising candidate in dental implants. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:After nearly half a century of development under the guidance of the osseointegration theory, the major dilemmas for current implant dentistry are the implant associated infection and insufficient osseointegration. Moreover, biological aging of titanium (Ti) implants also brings great uncertainty to clinical results. In the present study, a novel nano-micro-hierarchical topography pattern is created by sandblasting and dual acid-etching on a Ti surface. The physico-chemical properties of the surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The effects of the hierarchical surfaces on osteoprogenitor cell growth and bacterial activities were separately evaluated. The optimized nano-micro-hierarchical Ti surface exhibits surprisingly topography-dependent antibacterial capacity via inhibiting bacterial adhesion of several species in the early stage and better osteogenesis ability than the microscaled surface. Aging studies demonstrate that, compared with the surface with a microscale structure, the nano-micro-hierarchical Ti surface has greater anti-aging ability manifested as being more capable to retain hydrophilicity and bioactivity during aging. Furthermore, the present study reveals that the biological aging of the Ti implant is attributed to two decisive factors during the aging period: the progressively thickened amorphous TiO2 layer by autoxidation and the unavoidable accumulation of hydrocarbons on the Ti implant surface.
Biological and Mechanical Effects of Micro-Nanostructured Titanium Surface on an Osteoblastic Cell Line In vitro and Osteointegration In vivo

Abstract:Hybrid micro-nanostructure implant surface was produced on titanium (Ti) surface by acid etching and anodic oxidation to improve the biological and mechanical properties. The biological properties of the micro-nanostructure were investigated by simulated body fluid (SBF) soaking test and MC3T3-E1 cell co-culture experiment. The cell proliferation, spreading, and bone sialoprotein (BSP) gene expression were examined by MTT, SEM, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), respectively. In addition, the mechanical properties were evaluated by instrumented nanoindentation test and friction-wear test. Furthermore, the effect of the micro-nanostructure surface on implant osteointegration was examined by in vivo experiment. The results showed that the formation of bone-like apatite was accelerated on the micro-nanostructured Ti surface after immersion in simulated body fluid, and the proliferation, spreading, and BSP gene expression of the MC3T3-E1 cells were also upregulated on the modified surface. The micro-nanostructured Ti surface displayed decreased friction coefficient, stiffness value, and Young's modulus which were much closer to those of the cortical bone, compared to the polished Ti surface. This suggested much better mechanical match to the surrounding bone tissue of the micro-nanostructured Ti surface. Furthermore, the in vivo animal experiment showed that after implantation in the rat femora, the micro-nanostructure surface displayed higher bonding strength between bone tissues and implant; hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining suggested that much compact osteoid tissue was observed at the interface of Micro-nano-Ti-bone than polished Ti-bone interface after implantation. Based on these results mentioned above, it was concluded that the improved biological and mechanical properties of the micro-nanostructure endowed Ti surface with good biocompatibility and better osteointegration, implying the enlarged application of the micro-nanostructure surface Ti implants in future.
Gene Expression Profiling of Bone Marrow-Derived Stromal Cells Seeded Onto a Sandblasted, Large-Grit, Acid-Etched-treated Titanium Implant Surface: the Role of the Wnt Pathway

Abstract:Objective: The physical and chemical characteristics of the titanium implant surface have been shown to influence dental implant fixation. However, the underlying mechanism by which sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) treatment affects osseointegration remains elusive.Methods: In the present study, the involved target genes and pathways for SLA treatment, which is an extensively used implant surface modification on improving osseointegration, were identified by in vitro microarray and bioinformatics analyses.Results: A total of 19 genes were differentially expressed after SLA treatment, which included Apc2,Fzd1, Frzb, Wnt16, Fzd2, Plau, Wnt5b, Wnt5a, Lrp6, Wnt9a, Sfrp4, Prkch, Calcoco1, Ccnd1, Wif1, Fzd4, Myc, LRP5, and Lect2. Interaction pathway analyses showed that the Wnt pathway was the most relevant signal after SLA treatment. To ensure the reliability of microarray data, LRP5 was shown to positively regulate osteogenic commitment, extracellular matrix synthesis, and mineralization for BMMSCs seeded onto an SLA-treated titanium surface. However, with LRP5 shRNA treatment, the reduction in calcium deposition in the SLA-treated group was more severe than that observed in cells seeded onto SLA-untreated titanium surface, suggesting that the function of LRP5 was reinforced in the SLA-treated group. In addition, the present study demonstrated that the beta-catenin/LRP5 pathway was responsible for the enhanced osteogenic responses of BMMSCs on SLA-treated titanium surface.Conclusions: The findings of the present study serve as an initial step towards understanding the mechanism underlying SLA treatment in osseointegration. Enhanced Osseointegration by the Hierarchical Micro-Nano Topography on Selective Laser Melting Ti-6Al-4V Dental Implants

Abstract:Currently, selective laser melting (SLM) has been thriving in implant dentistry for on-demand fabricating dental implants. Based on the coarse microtopography of SLM titanium surfaces, constructing nanostructure to form the hierarchical micro-nano topography is effective in enhancing osseointegration. Given that current nanomodification techniques of SLM implants, such as anodization and hydrothermal treatment, are facing the inadequacy in costly specific apparatus and reagents, there has been no recognized nanomodified SLM dental implants. The present study aimed to construct hierarchical micro-nano topography on self-made SLM dental implants by a simple and safe inorganic chemical oxidation, and to evaluate its contribution on osteoblastic cells bioactivity and osseointegration. The surface chemical and physical parameters were characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, profilometer, AFM, and contact angle meter. The alteration on bioactivity of MG-63 human osteoblastic cells were detected by qRT-PCR. Then the osseointegration was assessed by implanting implants on the femur condyle of New Zealand Rabbits. The hierarchical micro-nano topography was constituted by the microrough surface of SLM implants and nanoneedles (diameter: 20∼50 nm, height: 150∼250 nm), after nanomodifying SLM implants in 30% hydrogen peroxide and 30% hydrochloride acid (volume ratio 1:2.5) at room temperature for 36 h. Low chemical impurities content and high hydrophilicity were observed in the nanomodified group. Cell experiments on the nanomodified group showed higher expression of mitophagy related gene (PINK1, PARKIN, LC3B, and LAMP1) at 5 days and higher expression of osteogenesis related gene (Runx2 and OCN) at 14 days. In the early stage of bone formation, the nanomodified SLM implants demonstrated higher bone-to-implant contact. Intriguingly, the initial bone-to-implant contact of nanomodified SLM implants consisted of more mineralized bone with less immature osteoid. After the cessation of bone formation, the bone-to-implant contact of nanomodified SLM implants was equal to untreated SLM implants and marketable TixOs implants. The overall findings indicated that the inorganic chemical oxidized hierarchical micro-nano topography could enhance the bioactivity of osteoblastic cells, and consequently promote the peri-implant bone formation and mineralization of SLM dental implants. This study sheds some light on improvements in additive manufactured dental implants.

Abstract:Osseointegration is a sophisticated bone and implant healing process comprising of initial hematoma formation, immediate osteoimmunomodulation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. To fulfill rapid and satisfying osseointegration, this study developed a biomimetic implant coating that could confer the intraosseous implants a systematical regulation of the participatory processes. Herein, we shaped dissimilar nano-scale (NS) to form highly biomimetic structures of natural extracellular matrix (ECM) of the host bone and bone healing hematoma with micro/nano-scale (MNS) titania fiber-like network on the surface of titanium (Ti) implants. In vitro experiments revealed that the MNS not only facilitated osteogenic and angiogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and endothelial cells, respectively, but also suppressed M1 macrophages (MΦs), whereas, stimulated pro-healing M2 phenotype. Notably, BMSCs on MNS surfaces enabled a significant immunomodulatory effect on MΦs resulting in the downregulation of inflammation-related cell signaling pathways. The favorable osteoimmune microenvironment manipulated by MNS further facilitated osteo-/angio-genesis via the crosstalk of multi-signaling pathways. In vivo evaluation mirrored the aforementioned results, and depicted that MNS induced ameliorative osseointegration when compared with the NS as well as the pristine Ti implant. The study demonstrated the modulatory effect of the multifaceted biomimetic structure on spatiotemporal regulation of the participatory processes during osseointegration.

Remodeling of the Osteoimmune Microenvironment after Biomaterials Implantation in Murine Tibia: Single-cell Transcriptome Analysis

Abstract:Osseointegration seems to be a foreign body reaction equilibrium due to the complicated interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. The heterogeneity of the osteoimmune microenvironment in the osseointegration of implant materials remains elusive. Here, a single-cell study involving 40043 cells is conducted, and a total of 10 distinct cell clusters are identified from five different groups. A preliminary description of the osteoimmune microenvironment revealed the diverse cellular heterogeneity and dynamic changes modulated by implant properties. The increased immature neutrophils, Ly6C + CCR2hi monocytes, and S100a8hi macrophages induce an aggressive inflammatory response and eventually lead to the formation of fibrous capsule around the stainless steel implant. The enrichment of mature neutrophils, FcgR1hi and differentiated immunomodulatory macrophages around the titanium implant indicates favorable osseointegration under moderate immune response. Neutrophil-depletion mice are conducted to explore the role of neutrophils in osseointegration. Neutrophils may improve bone formation by enhancing the recruitment of BMSCs via the CXCL12/CXCR3 signal axis. These findings contribute to a better knowledge of osteoimmunology and are valuable for the design and modification of ‘osteoimmune-smart’ biomaterials in the bone regeneration field.

Abstract:[reaction: see text] A new capture-ROMP-release method for chromatography-free purification of N-hydroxysuccinimde Mitsunobu reactions is described. The Mitsunobu reaction captures a variety of alcohols onto a norbornenyl N-hydroxysuccinimide monomer. Subjection of the resulting crude reaction mixture to ROM-polymerization generates a polymer that can be precipitated with methanol and filtered from the Mitsunobu byproducts. Treatment of the polymer with hydrazine releases the substrate from the water-soluble polymer, producing a variety of O-alkylhydroxylamines with good purity.
Modulation of human antibody production in vitro by D-penicillamine and CuSO4: inhibition of helper T cell function.

Abstract:Pokeweed mitogen (PWM), a T cell dependent, polyclonal B cell activator, stimulates the differentiation of immunoglobulin secreting cells (ISC) from normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM). In this in vitro study, PBM failed to generate ISC in response to PWN after brief exposure to penicillamine and CuSO4; preincubation with either penicillamine or CuSO4 alone had no effect. Experiments utilizing purified populations of B and T cells indicated that penicillamine and CuSO4 markedly inhibited helper T cell activity but not B cell function. These observations may explain the effectiveness of penicillamine in rheumatoid arthritis, especially in decreasing rheumatoid factor titers.
Enhanced Osteointegration of Hierarchical Structured 3D-Printed Titanium Implants

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has been widely used to fabricate of various titanium and its alloy implants. However, engineering the 3D printing nanoscaled feature to realize a hierarchical micronano structured surface topography still remains a challenge. On one hand, enhanced bioactivity is always expected on micronano-hybrid biomimetic topography; on the other hand, a typical functional protein in extracellular matrix (ECM) is nanoscaled; therefore, nanoscaled features might affect its binding to specific receptor and subsequent cell response. Here, we engineered a novel hierarchical structure with microparticles and rutile TiO2 nanorods topography that fabricated by 3D printing of pure titanium followed by a hydrothermal process. Although there was no difference on the microscaled feature before/after nanonization, cellular behaviors including adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were significantly upregulated on the hierarchical micronano structured topography. Moreover, we demonstrated that the distinct conformation of the initially fibronectin proteins adsorbed on nanorods was more beneficial to cellular adhesion. In vivo test in a rabbit femur model also demonstrated the favorable for new bone formation on the novel hierarchical micronano structured implant-bone interface. These results therefore suggest that the hierarchical micronano structured topography might be a promising surface feature for the new generation of bone implants.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Next generation of coating materials on the surface of implants is designed with a paradigm shift from an inert material to an osteoimmunomodulatory material. Regulating immune response to biomedical implants through influencing the polarization of macrophage has been proven to be an effective strategy.METHODS: Through anodization and hydrothermal treatment, magnesium ion incorporated TiO2 nanotube array (MgN) coating was fabricated on the surface of titanium and it is hypothesized that it has osteoimmunomodulatory properties. To verify this assumption, systematic studies were carried out by in vitro and in vivo experiments.RESULTS: Mg ion release behavior results showed that MgN coating was successfully fabricated on the surface of titanium using anodization and hydrothermal technology. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the morphology of the MgN coating on the titanium. The expression of inflammation-related genes (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α) was downregulated in MgN group compared with TiO2 nanotube (NT) and blank Ti groups, but anti-inflammatory genes (IL-10 and IL-1ra) were remarkably upregulated in the MgN group. The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that MgN coating influenced macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype compared with NT and blank-Ti groups, which enhanced osteogenic differentiation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells rBMSCs in conditioned media (CM) generated by macrophages.CONCLUSION: MgN coating on the titanium endowed the surface with immune-regulatory features and exerted an advantageous effect on osteogenesis, thereby providing excellent strategies for the surface modification of biomedical implants.

Abstract:Surface modification of medical implants is considered as an effective method to improve cellular behaviors and the integration of tissues with materials. Titanium (Ti)-based materials with four different micro/nano-structures and compositions were prepared by acid etching, electrochemical anodization and alkali-heat treatment. The surface morphologies and compositions of the different surface-modified Ti materials were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the micro/nano structured and compositions of the surfaces on cellular responses were investigated in vitro by observing the morphology, adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of osteoblasts. To further investigate the underlying mechanisms, an RT-PCR assay was performed to analyze the expression levels of cell adhesion-related genes. Our results indicated that the nanosized structure and anatase composition could promote the adhesion and proliferation of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast, as well as alkaline phosphatase activity and extracellular matrix mineralization via the integrin-FAK signaling pathway. Taken together, our innovation presented in this work demonstrated that the surface nano-structure design and composition of biomedical implants can be modified of for future orthopaedic applications.
Novel Bionic Topography with MiR-21 Coating for Improving Bone-Implant Integration through Regulating Cell Adhesion and Angiogenesis

Abstract:Implant loosening is still the major form of the failure of artificial joints. Herein, inspired by the operculum of the river snail, we prepared a novel bionic micro/nanoscale topography on a titanium surface. This bionic topography promoted early cell adhesion through up-regulating the expression of ITG α5β1 and thus accelerated the following cell spreading, proliferation, and differentiation. Moreover, a miR-21 coating, which promoted the angiogenic differentiation of MSCs, was fabricated on the bionic topography. Benefiting from both bionic micro/nanoscale topography and miR-21, blood vessel growth and bone formation and mineralization around the implant, as well as bone-implant bonding strength, were significantly improved. Collectively, the present study highlights the combination of the bionic micro/nanoscale topography and miR-21 on promoting cell adhesion and angiogenic differentiation and improving in vivo angiogenesis and bone-implant osseointegration. Propagation characteristics of ferrite loaded inset dielectric guide

Abstract:This paper presents a rigorous method for calculating nonreciprocal propagation characteristics of double-layered inset dielectric guide containing a magnetized ferrite. The main features of this method are the formulation of integral equations by using Fourier transforms and the derivation of the solution by means of Galerkin's method. Numerical results for the propagation constants of the forward and backward waves of the dominant mode are presented for various values of the relative permittivity of the dielectric layer. It is found that by using large relative permittivity of the dielectric layer, this IDG structure offers very high nonreciprocity in propagation constants for the realization of efficient nonreciprocal phase shifters.
Exploring the mechanism behind improved osteointegration of phosphorylated titanium implants with hierarchically structured topography

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have been frequently used in dental and orthopedic implants, but the undesired oxide layer easily formed on the surface tends to be the cause of implant failure for Ti-based implants. To address this problem, we herein prepared a phosphorylated Ti coating (TiP-Ti) with a micro/nano hierarchically structured topography on commercially pure Ti implants by a hydrothermal method to improve its osteointegration capacity. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and biological activity were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), contact-angle measurement, and protein adsorption assay. Osteointegration of TiP-Ti implants in rat tibia was investigated by biomechanical testing, micro-CT and histological analyses. We further explored the proposed mechanism which improves osteointegration of TiP-Ti implants by proliferation, adhesion, and differentiation assays of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Our results demonstrated that the improved osteointegration mainly benefited from the better spread and adhesion of BMSCs on the micro/nano hierarchically structured TiP-Ti surfaces compared to hydroxyapatite coated Ti (HA-Ti), the positive control, and untreated Ti (untreated-Ti), the negative control. In conclusion, TiP-Ti surface is a promising candidate implant surface design to accelerate the osteointegration of Ti-based implants in biomedical applications.
Positive Modulation of Osteogenesis on a Titanium Oxide Surface Incorporating Strontium Oxide: an in Vitro and in Vivo Study.

Abstract:Surface chemistry and topography can determinatively affect the osseointegration of dental implants. Strontium (Sr) has a significant effect on the promotion of bone formation and inhibitation of bone resorption. The emphasis of this study lies on the evaluation of a new surface treatment that aims to improve the early osseointegration of dental implantation both in vitro and in vivo. A hydrothermal method was used to prepare an SrTiO3 incorporation on sandblasted large-grit double acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces in SrCl2 solution. The composition and morphology of the SrTiO3 doped surface were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the external release figure of Sr was examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The proliferation, adhesion and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells on this surface were evaluated in vitro and presented a significant increase in SLA-Sr group compared with that in SLA group. An in vivo study in 24 New Zealand rabbits indicated a remarkable growth in the volume of direct bone-to-implant contact and peri-implant bone in SLA-Sr group, which were compared with SLA group after 3 and 6 weeks, and removal torque tests exhibited a higher torque removal value of SLA-Sr implants. The study gave the result that the biological effect of SLA-Sr implants was significantly superior to that of the SLA implants at the early stage of osseointegration.
