Abstract:Circulating activated platelet aggregates (aPA) were assayed by flow cytometry employing mAb α‐CD62p in eight patients with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Elevation of aPA was observed in all patients in active stages of TTP; aPA normalized in remission. Plasma infusions with plasmapheresis decreased aPA in responding patients. The rise and fall of aPA preceded relapses and improvements, respectively. These changes were seen prior to the traditional indicators, LDH, haematocrit, and platelet count. Incubation of plasma from TTP patients with normal whole blood induced formation of aPA; this effect was significantly greater than that of plasmas from ITP patient controls (P < 0.01), suggesting the presence of an aPA‐promoting factor in TTP plasma. Parallel experiments using a platelet aggregometer failed to detect effects of TTP plasma on normal blood. In summary, aPA appear to be a marker of disease activity, rising with relapse, falling with plasma therapy, and normalizing in remission. The flow cytometric assay of aPA is more sensitive than aggregometry in detecting the putative aPA‐promoting factor in TTP.

Abstract:In this paper, a new capacitance-to-frequency converter using a charge-based capacitance measurement (CBCM) circuit is proposed for on-chip capacitance measurement and calibration. As compared to conventional capacitor measurement circuits, the proposed technique is able to represent the capacitance in term of the frequency so that the variations can be easily handled in measurement or calibration circuits. Due to its simplicity, the proposed technique is able to achieve high accuracy and flexibility with small silicon area. Designed using standard 180 nm CMOS technology, the core circuit occupies less than 50 μm × 50 μm while consuming less than 60 μW at an input frequency of 10 MHz. Post-layout simulation shows that the circuit exhibits less than 3 % measurement errors for fF to pF capacitances while the functionality has been significantly improved.
Study on Dual-Frequency Imaging of Capacitively Coupled Electrical Impedance Tomography: Frequency Optimization

Abstract:In this work, a new dual-frequency imaging framework of capacitively coupled electrical impedance tomography (CCEIT) is presented. Unlike conventional single-frequency imaging and recently emerged multifrequency imaging, the dual-frequency imaging adopts two different working frequencies to obtain the real part and the imaginary part of the impedance, respectively. With the real part image and the imaginary part image reconstructed at the two frequencies, the framework further introduces image fusion to obtain the fused image. To achieve the optimal selection of the two frequencies, data collection in a wide frequency range is carried out with a 12-electrode CCEIT sensor, an impedance analyzer, and a computer to obtain the real part and the imaginary part measurements. The multifrequency data are then analyzed in depth, and other two aspects, including the sensitivity distribution and the imaging quality at different frequencies, are also investigated. Research results show that a low working frequency is recommended for the real part, while a relatively high working frequency is recommended for the imaginary part. Within the investigated frequency range of 200 kHz–20 MHz, the working frequencies for the real part and the imaginary part are optimized under the investigated distribution setups. Results of verification experiment show that the proposed framework is effective. Compared with single-frequency CCEIT, dual-frequency CCEIT with the two optimized frequencies has much better imaging performance.
A Bridged Contactless Measurement Technique for LC Tank Based Voltage-Controlled Oscillator.

Abstract:This paper presents a bridged contactless measurement technique that can measure the resonant frequency and quality factor of a fully-integrated powered off voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). Unlike the use of the conventional two-coil inductive link, the proposed technique uses an additional inductor to bridge the coupling between the LC tank and the external inductor serving measurement purposes. This makes it possible to examine the on-chip high frequency oscillator with an off-chip inductor at Printed Circuit Board (PCB) level. As an example, a K-band VCO as well as the proposed test structure have been designed and simulated using 0.13 μm CMOS technology. The quality factor and operating frequency of the oscillator are measured using the proposed contactless technique through extraction from the frequency response of a bridged inductive link. The efficiency of the method has been validated by full wave electromagnetic simulation. As a reference, the characterization of the oscillator is also obtained using the Cadence Spectre RF and Mentor Graphic's Calibre PEX commercial Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software. The results of these two solutions agree considerably well, which supports the feasibility and potentials of using this technique for contactless measurements.

Abstract:In this work, a new capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) sensor for microfluidic devices is developed. By introducing an LC circuit, the working frequency of the new C4D sensor can be lowered by the adjustments of the inductor and the capacitance of the LC circuit. The limits of detection (LODs) of the new C4D sensor for conductivity/ion concentration measurement can be improved. Conductivity measurement experiments with KCl solutions were carried out in microfluidic devices (500 µm × 50 µm). The experimental results indicate that the developed C4D sensor can realize the conductivity measurement with low working frequency (less than 50 kHz). The LOD of the C4D sensor for conductivity measurement is estimated to be 2.2 µS/cm. Furthermore, to show the effectiveness of the new C4D sensor for the concentration measurement of other ions (solutions), SO42− and Li+ ion concentration measurement experiments were also carried out at a working frequency of 29.70 kHz. The experimental results show that at low concentrations, the input-output characteristics of the C4D sensor for SO42− and Li+ ion concentration measurement show good linearity with the LODs estimated to be 8.2 µM and 19.0 µM, respectively.

Abstract:The existing capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) sensors are mainly used to detect the conductivity/ion concentration in capillary tube. A new sensor for conductivity measurement in large-scale pipes is developed based on the C4D technique. A quartz crystal is introduced to eliminate the influence of the coupling capacitances. Meanwhile, a quartz crystal oscillator is designed to simplify the sensor structure and provide the excitation signal with highly stable and accurate frequency. Experimental results indicate that this sensor obtains satisfactory accuracy when measuring conductivity in large-scale pipe (5.5 mm i.d. and 7.5 mm o.d.). In the range of 1-200 mS/cm, the maximum relative measurement error is less than 2%. The developed sensor provides useful reference for contactless conductivity measurement in industrial field.

Abstract:We present a wide-band experimental characterization of an on-chip shunt inductor and capacitor (LC) interconnect. (A previous paper by the authors considered the series LC case). In order to capture the effects of parasitic parameters on the wide-band transmission and reflection characteristics of shunt LC interconnects, we propose a generalized frequency-independent circuit model for fast-running simulations. The model is accurate to above its second resonant frequency, with low average simulation errors for both reflection and transmission coefficients compared to the measured two-port S parameters over the frequency range of 1 to 14 GHz.

Abstract:Based on the phase-sensitive demodulation (PSD) principle, a novel capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) system is developed to improve the measurement resolution and the detection range. The coupling capacitances formed by the metal electrodes, insulating pipe and electrolyte solution and the resistance formed by the electrolyte solution between the two metal electrodes can be measured. The influence of coupling capacitances on conductivity measurement is greatly reduced and the information of the coupling capacitance can also be obtained separately with the new system. Test results show that compared with the conventional C4D methods, the proposed method has the advantages of high resolution and wide measurement range.

Abstract:Based on the series resonance principle, a new method of capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) is proposed to improve the detection resolution and to expand the detection range of the C4D. With the introduction of an inductor module, at series resonance, the influence of the coupling capacitances formed by the metal electrodes, insulating pipe and electrolyte solution on conductivity detection is eliminated. Meanwhile, a new shield configuration is designed to remove the influence of the stray capacitances. The experiment results show that the proposed method is an effective detection method. Compared with the existing C4D methods, it has the advantages of high resolution and wide detection range.

Abstract:A new capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C 4 D) sensor with an improved simulated inductor is developed in this work.The improved simulated inductor is designed on the basis of the Riordan-type floating simulated inductor.With the improved simulated inductor, the negative influence of the coupling capacitances is overcome and the conductivity measurement is implemented by the series resonance principle.The conductivity measurement experiments are carried out in three pipes with different inner diameters of 3.0 mm, 4.6 mm and 6.4 mm, respectively.The experimental results show that the designs of the new C 4 D sensor and the improved simulated inductor are successful.The maximum relative error of the conductivity measurement is less than 5%.Compared with the C 4 D sensors using practical inductors, the measurement accuracy of the new C 4 D sensor is comparable.The research results also indicate that the adjustability of a simulated inductor can reduce the requirement for the AC source and guarantee the interchangeableness.Meanwhile, it is recommended that making the potential of one terminal of a simulated inductor stable is beneficial to the running stability.Furthermore, this work indirectly verifies the possibility and feasibility of the miniaturization of the C 4 D sensor by using the simulated inductor technique and lays a good foundation for future research work.

Abstract:A procedure to include conductor loss in interdigital capacitor based dielectric constant measurements is proposed. The effect of conductor loss and contact resistance can be regarded as a series resistor connected to the interdigital capacitor. If the thickness of the conductor film is known, the conductor loss could be calculated and subtracted from the measurement results. In the frequency range where the dielectric constant of the material in test does not change with frequency, the conductor loss could also be obtained by measuring the frequency dependence of the impedance of the interdigital capacitor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Online Measurement of Conductivity/permittivity of Fluid by a New Contactless Impedance Sensor.

Abstract:By expanding the contactless conductivity detection (CCD) technique to contactless impedance detection technique, a new contactless impedance sensor is designed to implement the online measurement for both the conductivity of a conductive fluid and the permittivity of a non-conductive fluid. In the new contactless impedance sensor, a new simulated inductor is developed to overcome the unfavorable influences of the coupling capacitances by impedance elimination principle, and the digital phase-sensitive demodulation (DPSD) technique is adopted to realize the impedance measurement. To verify the effectiveness of the new contactless impedance sensor, simulation experiments (using different resistors, capacitors, and their combinations) and practical fluid experiments (using KCl solutions with different concentrations, eight organic solvents, and pure water) are carried out. The experimental results show that the development of the new contactless impedance sensor is successful and the conductivity/permittivity measurement performance of the new sensor is satisfactory. The maximum relative error of conductivity measurement is 3.1% and the maximum relative error of permittivity measurement is 5.5%. Compared with the conventional conductivity/permittivity sensors, the new sensor can implement the contactless online measurement of both the two electrical parameters of fluid. Meanwhile, the new contactless impedance sensor is suitable for industrial applications and has the advantages of simple construction and low cost.

Abstract:Impedance imaging is an effective approach for non-intrusively reconstruct the distribution of dielectric parameters inside the region of interest. Most common form of impedance imaging is electrical impedance tomography (EIT), which requires direct contact with the medium via electrodes. In this work we present a novel impedance imaging using capacitive coupling which provides a contactless method, totally non-invasive and non-intrusive, by measuring the phase. There are less attentions in many prior works to the phase information of the voltage/current measurements. This work studies for the first time the capacitively coupled electrical phase spectroscopy for contactless dielectric parameter imaging. A 12-electrode capacitively coupled test phantom and a measurement system were used to obtain the phase measurements within a wideband frequency range from 200 kHz to 15 MHz. Background data with different conductivity levels were investigated in the experiments to show a broad application possibility. The forward modelling was implemented by simulation and the image reconstruction based on phase measurements was implemented with the total variation algorithm. The potentials, possibilities and challenges of such capacitively coupled dielectric spectroscopy tomography with phase data are discussed in this work.

Abstract:Summary Electromagnetic (EM) coupling effects including both inductive and capacitive coupling have long been an essential problem in broadband spectral electrical impedance tomography (sEIT) measurements at the field scale. Efforts have been made to remove EM coupling numerically or to suppress the effects by modified data acquisition strategies. For near surface applications with relatively small survey layouts, inductive coupling can be well removed in the mHz to kHz frequency range. With the use of shielded coaxial cables and so-called active electrodes where the amplifiers are mounted at the electrodes, capacitive coupling in sEIT measurements can also be reduced. However, it remains challenging to cope with capacitive coupling between the cable shield and the ground, especially in resistive field conditions. The aim of this study is to deal with this type of capacitive coupling effect by identifying and filtering out sEIT measurements that are strongly affected by capacitive coupling. Based on a correction method for capacitive coupling proposed in a previous study, an approach to estimate measurement errors due to capacitive coupling is presented first. In a second step, a workflow was proposed to calculate the capacitive coupling strength (CCS) for each electrode configuration, which is defined as the ratio of the imaginary part of the impedance induced by capacitive coupling and the imaginary part of the impedance due to the subsurface electrical conductivity. In a final step, measurements with low CCS were selected for inversion and the results were compared with inversion results obtained using the previously developed correction approach. It was found that the filtering method based on CCS is more capable in tackling capacitive coupling compared to using model-based corrections. Spectrally consistent sEIT results up to kHz were obtained using the newly developed filtering method, which were not achieved in previous work using model-based correction.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel contactless single-chip detector that utilizes impedance-to-digital conversion technology to measure impedance in the microfluidic channel or capillary format analytical device. The detector is designed to operate similarly to capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detectors for capillary electrophoresis or chromatography but with the added capability of performing frequency sweeps up to 200 kHz. At each recorded data point, impedance and phase-shift data can be extracted, which can be used to generate impedance versus frequency plots, or phase-shift versus frequency plots. Real and imaginary parts can also be calculated from the data, allowing for the generation of Nyquist diagrams. This detector represents the first of its kind in the contactless conductivity class to provide spectrum-type data, as demonstrated in capillary electrophoresis experiments.

A treatment difficulty index for unerupted maxillary canines.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to produce a treatment difficulty index (TDI) for unerupted maxillary canines. Thirty treated cases, each with an unerupted unilateral maxillary canine, were graded by 14 consultant orthodontists in terms of perceived alignment difficulty, and the four main factors which had contributed to each grade were listed in order of importance. The relationship between the grade and the contributory factors was then examined using regression analysis, and weightings were derived. These were applied to each factor, in order to derive a difficulty score total for each case. Linear regression analysis of difficulty scores against consultant grades produced an R2 value of 54.7 per cent using the original equation and an R2 of 52.3 per cent using values rounded to the nearest half. Both indicated a moderate level of agreement between allocated difficulty grade and calculated difficulty scores. The index provides a useful treatment planning aid for the management of impacted maxillary canines.
Impedance Nonlinearity Measurement of Interdigital Electrode-Solution System by Free Damped Oscillation

Abstract:To measure the nonlinear impedance of interdigital electrode-solution system, a novel method based on free damped oscillation is proposed. A high valued active inductance with adjustable negative resistance is constructed by an operational amplifier. A second order oscillation system for measurement is then set up by connecting the active inductance with the device under test. The active inductance is designed to be around 470H to meet the measurement requirements of low frequency. The negative resistor is utilized to adjust damping coefficient of the oscillation system in order to obtain enough number of ring-down oscillation cycles for parameter estimation. The free damped oscillation signal of the oscillation system is obtained under square wave voltage excitation. After processed by Hilbert transform, the instantaneous capacitance and resistance can be calculated simultaneously to implement nonlinear impedance measurement. The operational availability of the proposed method is verified by experimental results of commercial available resistors and capacitors. The impedance nonlinearity of a gold interdigital electrode immersed in KCl solutions of different concentration is tested and compared with that obtained by sweep-amplitude sinusoidal excitation methods. The results indicate that the proposed method can successfully obtain impedance nonlinearity in half of the square wave period.
Segmented measurement method for electrical impedance spectroscopy and its experimental investigation

Abstract:When excited by a square-wave pulse signal, electrical impedance values on multiple frequency points could be obtained within one measurement cycle. However, because the amplitudes of high-order harmonic components would decay rapidly, the frequency width of the obtained impedance spectroscopy is limited. Using a series of square-wave signals with successive increasing frequencies as the excitation, multiple impedance spectroscopy segments are obtained. A segmented measurement method for electrical impedance spectroscopy is implemented by connecting the spectroscopy segments. Electrical impedance systems of an eddy current sensing coil and the human skin are experimentally tested. The results indicate that, smooth impedance spectroscopy curves can be rapidly obtained by such a method. A novel idea is therefore provided for implementing a low cost impedance spectroscopy measurement system.

The increase of the number of bacteria during incubation is measured by turbidity (12 degrees forward scattering) and total cell number counted in the microscope. The method allows to define the influence of water treatment steps (ozone, activated carbon filtration) on the growth rate being a decisive criterion on regrowth problems in distribution systems.

Abstract:The double-ended excitation self-balancing bridge excitation method is a capacitance measurement method with rather a high measurement accuracy currently. However, the reference impedance of the electric bridge limits the traditional self-balancing excitation measurement method, making it difficult to achieve high accuracy and a wide range of capacitance sensor measurements. In the proposed paper, frequency adjustment method is introduced to enable impedance matching between the measured capacitance and the reference resistance. The measurement range is broadened as well as maintaining the accuracy of the capacitance measurement. The measurement circuit is composed of a reference resistor, a bridge in series with the measured capacitance and an operational amplifier follower circuit. First, we roughly measure the input impedance of the operational amplifier and the capacitive reactance of the capacitance under test using a two-step excitation method. Then, the best excitation frequency is calculated to match the reference resistor according to the capacitive reactance under test, and the input impedance of the operational amplifier is re-estimated with the best frequency. Finally, we complete the accurate measurement of the capacitive reactance under test through the use of dual excitation. The experimental results demonstrate the method's high accuracy measurement within the range of 1.6pF to 16nF, with the reference resistance set at 1MΩ and the excitation frequency adjusted between 10-100kHz. Additionally, dual excitation stability testing verifies relative standard deviations in the range of 0.01% to 0.12%. Experiments on filter capsule sensing detection show that the proposed frequency adjustment measurement method can perform highly sensitive capacitive sensing measurements under the influence of parasitic effects.
