Wellcome's response to letter calling for focus on integrated academic training in reform of academic medicine

Abstract:We understand Spencer's concerns about reform of academic medicine.1 At Wellcome, we share the belief that integrating academic training with clinical demands is crucial. Clinical academics work at the interface of medicine and cutting edge research. Their skills and experience are critical in ensuring we can translate research into improvements in the health and wellbeing of people in the UK and beyond.It's important to clarify, however, that Wellcome has not discontinued its support for clinical doctorates. We continue to fund successful doctoral programmes targeted at supporting clinical academics and allied health professionals.2The declining number of clinical researchers is concerning. We've called on the government to tackle this3 and we are working with key partners in the UK to coordinate our clinical training activities more effectively.
