Abstract:Free time in a working memory task often improves the recall performances of the to-be-remembered items. It is still debated whether the free-time effect in working memory is purely proactive, purely retroactive, or both proactive and retroactive. In the present study, we used the single-gap paradigm to explore this question. In Experiment 1, we measured the gap-length effect (i.e., the difference in memory performance elicited by the gap-length difference) under three long-short-gap combinations (i.e., 2,500 ms/100 ms, 2,500 ms/500 ms, 2,500 ms/1,000 ms). Proactive effects have been observed in all the three combinations whereas retroactive effects have only been found in two of them (i.e., 2,500 ms/100 ms, 2,500 ms/500 ms). To rule out the possibility that the retroactive effects found in Experiment 1 were simply due to the temporal grouping caused by the gap, in Experiment 2, the 2,500 ms/500 ms combination was retested, with the memory materials being changed from letters (the material used in Experiment 1) to words. The results showed that the range of the retroactive effect (i.e., the number of affected memory items prior to the gap) increased when the memory material changed from letters to words, which cannot be explained by temporal grouping. Taken together, the two experiments provided solid evidence that free time in working memory could produce both retroactive and proactive effects that cannot be explained by temporal grouping. These findings also provide insight into the underlying mechanism of working memory, for example, whether rehearsal would occur during the free time.

Abstract:A dual-task paradigm is widely used to explore the interaction between two distinct mental mechanisms. However, the effectiveness of a dual-task paradigm is greatly reduced when studying working memory, because it is hard to distinguish dual-task interference due to shared executive processes from that due to shared memory storage. In the present study, we provided convergent evidence that dual-task cost in recall precision is a specific indicator of evaluating the interference across working memory representations that is irrelevant to executive processing. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that when two working memory tasks were performed concurrently, dual-task cost in recall precision showed up only if stimuli in the two tasks shared overlapping representational space. Experiments 3 and 4 found that when a working memory task was conducted concurrently with an attention-consuming task, no dual-task cost in recall precision showed up as long as stimuli in the two tasks did not share overlapping representational space. Experiment 5 further revealed that if a single-object tracking task is conducted while holding both color and location information in working memory, the tracking task would specifically affect the recall precision of the retrieved location (but not of the retrieved color). The present results suggested that dual-task cost in recall precision may provide a convenient and specific index for evaluating interference across working memory storage. Item-nonspecific proactive interference in monkeys' auditory short-term memory

Abstract:Recent studies using the delayed matching-to-sample (DMS) paradigm indicate that monkeys' auditory short-term memory (STM) is susceptible to proactive interference (PI). During the task, subjects must indicate whether sample and test sounds separated by a retention interval are identical (match) or not (nonmatch). If a nonmatching test stimulus also occurred on a previous trial, monkeys are more likely to incorrectly make a "match" response (item-specific PI). However, it is not known whether PI may be caused by sounds presented on prior trials that are similar, but nonidentical to the current test stimulus (item-nonspecific PI). This possibility was investigated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, memoranda for each trial comprised tones with a wide range of frequencies, thus minimizing item-specific PI and producing a range of frequency differences among nonidentical tones. In Experiment 2, memoranda were drawn from a set of eight artificial sounds that differed from each other by one, two, or three acoustic dimensions (frequency, spectral bandwidth, and temporal dynamics). Results from both experiments indicate that subjects committed more errors when previously-presented sounds were acoustically similar (though not identical) to the test stimulus of the current trial. Significant effects were produced only by stimuli from the immediately previous trial, suggesting that item-nonspecific PI is less perseverant than item-specific PI, which can extend across noncontiguous trials. Our results contribute to existing human and animal STM literature reporting item-nonspecific PI caused by perceptual similarity among memoranda. Together, these observations underscore the significance of both temporal and discriminability factors in monkeys' STM.

Abstract:Proactive interference (PI) occurs when previously learned memories compete with currently relevant information. Despite extensive literature investigating the effect in adults, little work has been done in young children. In three preregistered studies (N = 38, 35, 172; convenience samples from the Northeastern United States), first, we showed that 3-year-old toddlers are highly sensitive to the effect of PI in visual working memory and second, that these effects can originate from the reactivation of previously encoded information. Third, we tested how the ability to cope with PI changes between 2.5 and 7.5 years of age. Besides providing an estimate for the size of the interference effect at the youngest age to date, our findings have an important methodological implication: paradigms that repeat items across trials potentially underestimate young children's working memory abilities. Abstract:The present study examines the idea that time-based forgetting of outdated information can lead to better memory of currently relevant information. This was done using the visual arrays task, along with a between-subjects manipulation of both the retention interval (1 s vs. 4 s) and the time between two trials (1 s vs. 4 s). Consistent with prior work [Shipstead, Z., & Engle, R. W. (2013). Interference within the focus of attention: Working memory tasks reflect more than temporary maintenance. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 39, 277-289; Experiment 1], longer retention intervals did not lead to diminished memory of currently relevant information. However, we did find that longer periods of time between two trials improved memory for currently relevant information. This replicates findings that indicate proactive interference affects visual arrays performance and extends previous findings to show that reduction of proactive interference can occur in a time-dependent manner.

Abstract:We hypothesised that functionally active and passive states in working memory might be related to different neural mechanisms. Memoranda in active states might be maintained by persistent neural firing, whereas memoranda in passive states might be maintained through short-term synaptic plasticity. We reasoned that this might make these items differentially susceptible to interference during maintenance, and that passive items in particular might be more robust. To test this hypothesis, we gave our participants a working memory task in which one item was prioritised (active) by always probing it first, while the other item was deprioritised (passive) by always probing it second. In three experiments, we presented an interfering task during memory maintenance, in which the stimuli matched either the feature dimension of the memory items (colour or orientation), their spatial location, or both. We found that both active and passive memory items were affected by interference, to a similar extent, with overall performance being closely matched. However, we observed a qualitative difference in the nature of their representations. Specifically, featural interference seemed to produce reduced precision for active items, whereas it resulted in higher guess rates for passive items. The existence of this qualitative difference suggests that functionally active and passive working memory states may indeed map onto different neural mechanisms, even though on average they seem to be equally robust to interference.

Abstract:A logical virtual path (VP) based network provides an effective way to facilitate the dynamic resource management in ATM networks. The physical topology of an ATM network should be designed to provide flexibility to the logical VP reconfiguration in order to adapt to changing traffic conditions. Three different physical design algorithms are considered. Two parameters in the design control the spare capacity and the alternative path allocation providing the flexibility to the VPs. The algorithms are evaluated under both static and dynamic capacity allocation schemes using simulation.
Asymmetric Interaction Effects of Information with Varying Priorities in Visual Working Memory

Abstract:Visual working memory (VWM) is the ability to temporarily maintain and manipulate visual information, with individuals adjusting the priority of information processing based on task demands. However, the nature of the interactions between information of varying priorities in VWM remains debated, which is the focus of the current study. In Experiment 1, participants performed a delayed recall task for colors under different loads of prioritized memory items (PMIs) and unprioritized memory items (UMIs). The results indicated that the recall for PMIs deteriorated as the load of UMIs increased, and vice versa. More importantly, recall for UMIs was more significantly affected by the load of PMIs, indicating an asymmetric interaction pattern between PMIs and UMIs. Experiments 2 and 3 examined whether such an interaction pattern was influenced by the presentation order of PMIs and UMIs. We reversed and randomized the presentation sequence and replicated the findings from Experiment 1. Experiments 4 and 5 further validated these findings in delayed recall tasks for orientations and locations, confirming that the asymmetric interaction effects were consistent across different stimulus types. Moreover, Experiments 6 and 7 tested the cognitive mechanism underlying this pattern. We introduced an interference task during the delay phase and a test condition without recall of PMIs, revealing that the sustained attention to PMIs and the prioritized retrieval of PMIs were responsible for the observed asymmetry interaction pattern. Overall, this study enhances our understanding of how information with different priorities interacts during VWM and offers valuable insights for future studies.
Influence of target-distractor neural similarity on working memory performance in older and younger adults

Abstract:According to the inhibitory deficit hypothesis, older adults often fail to selectively inhibit distractors and attend to relevant information in working memory, leading to poorer memory of target items but better recall of irrelevant distractors compared to younger adults. Here, we explored how neural similarity of activity patterns between relevant and irrelevant stimulus categories impacts memory performance. We found evidence that older adults may benefit from failing to inhibit distractors that are similar to targets, perhaps because sustained neural activation of distractors partially supports maintenance of targets when they share neural resources, allowing for better subsequent recognition of studied target items. We also found increased category-specific multivoxel pattern activity in medial temporal regions in younger compared to older adults as category similarity increased. We propose that this reduced category-specific activation in medial temporal regions in older adults may reflect more blended representations of all the information available in working memory.

Abstract:Dual-tasks at the memory encoding stage have been shown to decrease recall performance and impair concurrent task performance. In contrast, studies on the effect of dual-tasks at the memory retrieval stage observed mixed results. Which cognitive mechanisms are underlying this dual-task interference is still an unresolved question. In the present study, we investigated the influence of a concurrent reaction-time task on the performance in a long-term memory task in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants performed an auditory-verbal free recall memory task and a visual-manual spatial Stroop task in a single or dual-task condition, either at the encoding or retrieval stage of the memory task. In Experiment 2, we examined the influence of processing conflicts in a concurrent RT task on memory encoding. Both experiments showed detrimental effects on recall accuracy and concurrent RT task performance in dual-task conditions at the encoding stage. Dual-task conditions at the retrieval stage led to a slowdown in recall latency and impaired concurrent RT task performance, but recall accuracy was maintained. In addition, we observed larger Stroop congruency effects in the dual-task conditions, indicating an increased processing conflict. However, in Experiment 2, we analyzed the effect of the processing conflict in a time-locked manner and could not find a significant influence on success of memory encoding. These findings suggest that processes in both tasks share the same limited capacity and are slowed down due to parallel processing, but we could not find evidence that this is further influenced by task-specific processing conflicts.

Abstract:In a retro-cue paradigm, after memorizing a set of objects, people are cued to remember only a subset. Improved memory from the retro-cue suggests that selection processes can benefit items stored in working memory. Does selection in working memory require attention? If so, an attention-demanding task should disrupt retro-cue effects. Studies using a dual-task paradigm have found mixed results, with only one study (Janczyk & Berryhill, Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics, 76 (3), 715-724, 2014) showing a decreased retro-cue effect by a secondary task. Here we explore a potential issue in that study - the temporal overlap of the secondary task response with the memory test presentation. This raises questions about whether the secondary task was impairing selection processes in memory or was impacting the memory response. We replicated their paradigm by inserting a tone discrimination task at the retro-cue offset, but we also included a condition in which the tone task and the memory test were temporally separated. In Experiment 1, performing the tone task did not impair the retro-cue effect. In Experiment 2, we added an articulatory suppression task as in Janczyk and Berryhill's study, and we found that the requirement to execute the tone task impaired retro-cue effects. This impairment was independent of whether the tone and memory tasks overlapped. These findings suggest that internal prioritization can be impaired by dual-task interference, but may only occur when such interference is robust enough, for example, due to switching between multiple tasks.
The resolution of proactive interference in a novel visual working memory task: A behavioral and pupillometric study

Abstract:Proactive interference (PI) occurs when previously learned information impairs memory for more recently learned information. Most PI studies have employed verbal stimuli, while the role of PI in visual working memory (VWM) has had relatively little attention. In the verbal domain, Johansson and colleagues (2018) found that pupil diameter – a real-time neurophysiological index of cognitive effort – reflects the accumulation and resolution of PI. Here we use a novel, naturalistic paradigm to test the behavioral and pupillary correlates of PI resolution for what-was-where item-location bindings in VWM. Importantly, in our paradigm, trials ( PI vs. no-PI condition) are mixed in a block, and participants are naïve to the condition until they are tested. This design sidesteps concerns about differences in encoding strategies or generalized effort differences between conditions. Across three experiments ( N = 122 total) we assessed PI's effect on VWM and whether PI resolution during memory retrieval is associated with greater cognitive effort (as indexed by the phasic, task-evoked pupil response). We found strong support for PI's detrimental effect on VWM (even with our spatially distributed stimuli), but no consistent link between interference resolution and effort during memory retrieval (this, even though the pupil was a reliable indicator that higher-performing individuals tried harder during memory encoding ). We speculate that when explicit strategies are minimized, and PI resolution relies primarily on implicit processing, the effect may not be sufficient to trigger a robust pupillometric response.

Abstract:Distraction embedded in working memory tasks leads to impaired performance. This impairment is mitigated when targets and distractors that follow them share common features—a signature effect of interference by superposition. Here we propose that target-distractor similarity modulates not only forgetting from working memory but also encoding into long-term memory. In five experiments, we test this elaboration-by-superposition hypothesis, demonstrating that semantic relatedness between targets and distractors benefits delayed category-cued recall performance (Experiments 1a and 1b), which is not due to carry-over effects from working memory testing (Experiment 2). Just as in the case of working memory, this long-term memory effect is reduced when distractors precede targets (Experiment 3). Finally, we show that while high target-distractor similarity reduces forgetting from working memory, it produces net benefits for long-term memory performance (Experiment 4). Together, the results suggest that common mechanisms underlie encoding into working and long-term memory, and that bindings between features of spatiotemporal context and features of to-be-remembered items play a crucial role. Abstract:Two successive lists of 35 nouns representing 7 conceptual categories were presented for 4 trials each. For half of the Ss different examples of the same categories appeared in the two lists; for the other half different categories were represented by the words in the lists. The experimental Ss recalled the words either immediately after learning List 2 or after a 20-min delay. One-third of the Ss recalled both lists at the same time, 1/3 recalled List 1 and then List 2, and 1/3 recalled List 2 before recalling List 1. Significant retroactive inhibition (RI) was obtained for both the Same and Different conditions, and the amount of RI was significantly greater in the Same condition. The RI in the Different condition resulted from the loss of whole categories while the RI in the Same condition resulted from the loss of both whole categories and specific words within categories. There was significantly less RI when both lists were recalled together than when they were recalled separately. Although there was a general increase in performance over the 20-min interval, there was no evidence of spontaneous recovery. It was concluded that the amount of RI obtained in free recall is directly related to the similarity of the organizational cues used for organizing the words into higher-order units.

Abstract:Using event-related potentials (ERPs), the present study examined the temporal dynamics of proactive interference in working memory using a recent probes task. Participants memorized and retained a target set of four letters over a short retention interval. They then responded to a recognition probe by judging whether it was from the memory set. ERP waveforms elicited by positive probes compared to those from negative probes showed positive shifts in a fronto-central early N2 component and a parietal late positive component (LPC). The LPC was identified as the electrophysiological signature of proactive interference, as it differentiated between two types of negative probes defined based on whether they were recently encountered. These results indicate that the proactive interference we observed arises from a mismatch between familiarity and contextual information during recognition memory. When considered together with related studies in the literature, the results also suggest that there are different forms of proactive interference associated with different neural correlates.

Abstract:Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Ahead of Print. Field-independent and field-dependent individuals have different reference patterns and cognitive processing preferences. Field-independent individuals tend to rely on internal capabilities and use internal references to process information, while field-dependent individuals mainly rely on external references and focus on external information. Individuals with two cognitive styles have different attention patterns to perform time-based prospective memory (TBPM) tasks, with different effects on their TBPM performance. This study explored the influence of field-independent and field-dependent cognitive styles on TBPM. In Experiment 1, the attention load was manipulated by the difficulty of the ongoing task. The results showed that the field-independent individuals performed better than the field-dependent individuals only under a low-difficulty condition, indicating that the field-independent individuals had advantages in TBPM but were easily affected by the attention load. Experiment 2 further introduced external reminders to provide individuals with more external information and reduce individual attention consumption in internal time information processing to manipulate attention load. The results showed that external cues eliminated the difference between field-independent and field-dependent individuals in TBPM.

Abstract:Priority-based allocation of attentional resources has shown robust effects in working memory (WM) with both cue-based and reward-based prioritization. However, direct comparisons between these effects in WM are needed. Additionally, the consequences of WM prioritization for remembering in the long term remain unclear for both prioritization procedures. Here, we tested and compared the immediate and long-term memory (LTM) effects of cue-based versus reward-based retrospective prioritization of WM content. Participants encoded four memory items and were then indicated to prioritize one of the items through the presentation of either a retro-cue or a reward pattern. We then tested their immediate and delayed memory. The results of the first experiment showed better memory for prioritized than for unprioritized information in WM and LTM, but the WM effect was driven solely by the retro-cue, making it difficult to interpret any reward-based effects in LTM. In the second experiment, using a more explicit and meaningful reward-based manipulation, the results showed a prioritization benefit in WM for both prioritization procedures. In LTM, however, the prioritization effect was predominantly driven by the retro-cue manipulation. Taken together, we found that (1) the way in which attention is directed in WM impacts the size of the prioritization benefit in WM, (2) WM prioritization generally results in a prioritization effect in LTM, and (3) that the effect in LTM is more robust for cue-based prioritization. Exploratory analyses indicated that the LTM effect of cue-based prioritization reflected a cost in performance for noncued items rather than a benefit for cued items.

Abstract:Mammalian cell populations may be enriched for temperature‐sensitive (ts) mutants by the tritiated thymidine (3H‐TdR) suicide procedure (Thompson et al., '71). Such procedures were carried out on the near‐diploid Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line and on a line made “tetraploid” by Colcemid treatment. Clones of ts mutants were obtained from the diploid line, but in spite of repeated attempts, no ts mutants were isolated from the tetroploid line. The phenotypes of the new diploid ts mutants recovered were consistent with the particular selection regime employed.
