Abstract:A mode-specific swimming protocol to assess maximal aerobic uptake (VO2maxsw) is vital to accurately evaluate swimming performance. A need exists for reliable and valid swimming protocols that assess VO2maxsw in a flume environment. The purpose was to assess: (a) reliability and (b) "performance" validity of a VO2maxsw flume protocol using the 457-m freestyle pool performance swim (PS) test as the criterion. Nineteen males (n = 9) and females (n = 10) (age, 28.5 ± 8.3 years.; height, 174.7 ± 8.2 cm; mass, 72.9 ± 12.5 kg; %body fat, 21.4 ± 5.9) performed two flume VO2maxsw tests (VO2maxswA and VO2maxswB) and one PS test [457 m (469.4 ± 94.7 s)]. For test-retest reliability (Trials A vs. B), moderately strong relationships were established for VO2maxsw (mL·kg-1·min-1)(r= 0.628, p = 0.002), O2pulse (mL O2·beat-1)(r = 0.502, p = 0.014), VEmax (L·min-1) (r = 0.671, p = 0.001), final test time (sec) (0.608, p = 0.004), and immediate post-test blood lactate (IPE (BLa)) (0.716, p = 0.001). For performance validity, moderately strong relationships (p < 0.05) were found between VO2maxswA (r =-0.648, p = 0.005), O2pulse (r= -0.623, p = 0.008), VEmax (r = -0.509 p = 0.037), and 457-m swim times. The swimming flume protocol examined is a reliable and valid assessment of VO2maxsw., and offers an alternative for military, open water, or those seeking complementary forms of training to improve swimming performance.

Abstract:Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) plays a crucial role in managing patients who have undergone coronary intervention (CI) following acute myocardial infarction. While water-based exercise is gaining recognition as an exercise modality in this patient population, its impact on the subgroup of older adults remains unexplored. In this post hoc analysis, we investigated the effects of water-based exercise on adults older than 60 years undergoing CR after CI, comparing it to land-based exercise and a control group. In total, 45 patients aged over 60 participated in 14-day exercise programs, featuring two daily 30-min sessions. We assessed exercise capacity (VO2peak), vascular function (flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD)), heart rate variability (HRV), and blood markers (Interleukins 6, 8, and 10, P-Selectin, ICAM, and High-sensitivity CRP) before and after CR. VO2peak in the water-based group improved significantly after CR in comparison with the land-based group: 1.35 kg/mL/min (95% CI [0.20–2.50], p = 0.022). The significant difference between water-based and land-based groups was observed in several HRV parameters: Total power −1129.20 ms2 (95% CI [−1951.92–−306.49], p = 0.008); peak LF 0.04 Hz (95% CI [0.00–0.08], p = 0.036); SD1 −9.02 millisecond (95% CI [−16.86–−1.18], p = 0.025); and SD2 −19.71 ms (95% CI [−35.08–−4.34], p = 0.013). FMD and blood markers did not vary significantly based on the exercise group. These findings suggest that short-term water-based CR may have potential as an alternative to traditional land-based CR, improving VO2peak and cardiorespiratory fitness among adults over 60 years undergoing CR after CI.

Abstract:As the population ages, maintaining an active lifestyle becomes increasingly vital to promote overall health and well-being in older individuals. Water- and land-based exercises have emerged as popular options, each offering a distinct set of benefits tailored to the unique needs of this population group. An electronic database search, including PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Web of Science, was conducted until 15 September 2023, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, to investigate the effects of water-based compared to land-based exercise on selected fitness parameters in older healthy individuals. The eligibility criteria included studies with at least two groups of participants aged 60 and older, with physical fitness outcome measures. A total of ten studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. While both exercise modalities may offer significant benefits, this review's findings emphasized the absence of conclusive evidence and consensus for recommending a single exercise category applicable to aquatic or land environments and providing more definite guidance to improve health-related physical fitness parameters in healthy older individuals. Finally, combining both training approaches may lead to a comprehensive array of health benefits for this age group population by also considering individual's needs, preferences, and fitness goals.

Abstract:Biological Research For Nursing, Ahead of Print. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of water exercise training on functional and hemodynamic responses in HF patients. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted until February 15, 2024, using multiple databases. Mean difference (MD) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Sixteen studies, comprising 349 participants with HF, were included. Water exercise led to enhancements in peak VO2 (MD, 2.85 mL/kg/min; 95% CI, 1.89 to 3.80; p < .00001) and resting heart rate (MD, −4.16 bm; 95% CI, −6.85 to −1.46; p = .002) compared to no exercising controls. Water plus land exercise reduced resting heart rate (MD, −1.41 bm; 95% CI, −2.13 to −0.69; p = .0001) compared to land exercise alone. Furthermore, acute water exercises decreased resting heart rate (MD, −3.85 bm; 95% CI, −6.49 to −1.21; p = .004) and increased stroke volume (MD, 14.68 mL/beat; 95% CI, 8.57 to 20.79; p < .00001) and cardiac output (MD, 0.5 L/min; 95% CI, 0.27 to 0.73; p < .00001) compared to baseline. Conclusion: These findings suggest that water exercise holds promise as an effective intervention for enhancing functional capacity and hemodynamic parameters in individuals with HF, highlighting the importance of further research to optimize its implementation and elucidate long-term benefits.

Comparison of cardiopulmonary responses to two types of dry-land upper-body exercise testing modes in competitive swimmers

Abstract:In this study we compared cardiopulmonary responses to upper-body exercise in 12 swimmers, using simulation of the front-crawl arm-pulling action on a computer-interfaced isokinetic swim bench and arm cranking on a modified cycle ergometer. Subjects adopted a prone posture; exercise was initially set at 20 W and subsequently increased by 10 W. min(-1). The tests were performed in a randomised order at the same time of day, within 72 h. The highest (peak) oxygen consumption (VO(2peak)), heart rate (HR(peak)), blood lactate ([la(-)](peak)) and exercise intensity (EI(peak)) were recorded at exhaustion. Mean (SEM) peak responses to simulated swimming were higher than those to arm cranking for VO(2peak) [2.9 (0.2) vs 2.4 (0.1) l x min(-1); P = 0.01], HR(peak) [174 (2) vs 161 (2) beats x min(-1); P = 0.03], and EI(peak) [122 (6) vs 102 (5) W; P = 0.02]. However, there were no significant differences in [la(-)](peak) [9.6 (0.6) vs 8.2 (0.6) mmol x l(-1); P = 0.08]. Thus simulated swimming is the preferred form of dry-land ergometry for the assessment of swimmers.

Abstract:Purpose: Alternative modes of cardiopulmonary exercise testing are needed and an arm cycle (AC) is a promising alternative to the gold standard of the leg cycle (LC). The aim of this study was to undertake a systematic review comparing maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) obtained from AC and LC in patient populations with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and pulmonary disease (PD). Methods: A systematic review was undertaken with literature searches on December 5, 2016. Studies were included if they directly compared aerobic capacity values obtained from AC and LC in patients with CVD or PD. Results across studies were pooled using random effects meta-analysis and univariate meta-regression were used to assess potential associations between variables. Results: A total of 14 studies in 411 patients were included. On average, VO2max of LC exceeded AC mean difference by 3.48 mL·kg−1·min−1, (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.94, 5.03) and a mean AC/LC ratio of 0.83, (95% CI: 0.77, 0.90). VO2max differences between AC and LC were similar in patients with CVD compared with PD but were found to be higher in older individuals and those with higher VO2max. Conclusions: Although AC offers an important alternative form of exercise testing for patients with CVD or PD, clinicians must take into account that VO2max values obtained from AC are consistently lower than those obtained on LC. However, the results of this article offer an evidence-based estimation for the proportional differences between AC values and LC values for groups with CVD or groups with PD.

Abstract:The aims of this study were: (i) to measure the exercise intensity (EI) of the most common water-based exercises (WE) at different movement frequencies (f1 = 1.8-2.0 Hz; f2 = 2.0-2.2 Hz; f3 = 2.2-2.4 Hz) and at a standardize movement's amplitude; (ii) to measure EI during a combination (MIX) of these WE. Five WE were selected: "running raising the knees high" (S); "jumping moving the legs sideways" (SJ); "jumping moving the legs backward and forward" (FJ); "alternate forward kicks" (FK); "alternate sideways kicks" (SK). Twelve physically active women were asked to perform these WE at the three frequencies, as well as a combination (MIX) of the WE. EI increased significantly (p < 0.01) with increasing frequency; as an average, for all WE: VO2 ranged from 18 to 25 ml kg(-1) min(-1), HR from 102 to 138 bpm, RPE from 9.8 to 14.4 (at f1 and f3, respectively). In terms of % VO2max, EI ranged from 37 to 54% for S, was similar for SJ and FJ (31-43%) and for FK and SK (47-63%) at f1 and f3, respectively. Thus, a given EI can be attained either by changing the type of exercise and/or the frequency of the movement. The combination of exercises did not change (in terms of VO2, HR and RPE) the intensity of each exercise performed separately. These data can be utilized to control, in terms of exercise type and frequency, the intensity of a proposed water-based activity.
Benefits of aquatic exercise in adults with and without chronic disease-A systematic review with meta-analysis

Abstract:Aquatic exercise is being increasingly recommended for healthy individuals as well as people with some special health conditions. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed to synthesize and analyze data on the effects of water-based training (WT) programs on health status and physical fitness of healthy adults and adults with diseases to develop useful recommendations for health and sports professionals. We searched three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus) up to June 2021 for randomized trials that examined WT in adults. A total of 62 studies were included, of which 26 involved only healthy individuals and 36 focused on adults with chronic diseases. In the healthy group, the effects of WT on strength, balance, and cardiorespiratory fitness were beneficial, indicating the usefulness of performing WT for at least 12 weeks (2-3x/week, 46-65 min/session). Among adults with diseases, improvements were observed in patients with fibromyalgia (in balance and cardiorespiratory fitness), bone diseases (pain, balance, flexibility, and strength), coronary artery disease (strength and anthropometry), hypertension (quality of life), stroke (quality of life), diabetes (balance and quality of life), multiple sclerosis (quality of life and balance), and Parkinson's disease (pain, gait, cardiorespiratory fitness, and quality of life). Research is required to determine the effects of WT on patients with heart disease, especially coronary artery disease. In adults with chronic disease, benefits in physical fitness and/or other health-related measures were mainly observed after 8-16 weeks of training. WT is an effective physical activity when the intention is to enhance health and physical fitness in healthy adults and adults with chronic diseases.
Maximal oxygen uptake and cardiorespiratory response to maximal 400-m free swimming, running and cycling tests in competitive swimmers

Abstract:Background: This study compared the cardiorespiratory response of trained swimmers to 400-m unimpeded front crawl swimming (SW), treadmill running (TR) and ergometer cycling (EC) maximal exercise tests, and evaluated the validity and specificity of a method to measure maximal aerobic power in swimming. Methods: Two series of experiments were conducted. In series A (n=15), comparisons were made between VO2peak and other cardiorespiratory variables in three maximal tests: after 400-m SW, and during incremental TR and EC. In series B, VO2 peak and related variables were measured after SW and during EC (n=33). Results: No significant differences were observed between VO2peak and VE in the three modes of exercise, although SW values tended to be higher. After SW, maximal ventilatory response was characterized by higher tidal volumes (VT) and lower respiratory rates (fR) as compared with TR and EC. The highest heart rate values (fH) were also observed in TR, followed by EC and SW. In series B, no significant differences were observed either in peak VO2 or VE, but fH was also lower in SW. Conclusions: A maximal 400-m unimpeded freestyle SW test yields essentially equal or nonsignificantly higher peak VO2 and VE values than during maximal TR or EC tests in trained swimmers. The specific maximal cardiorespiratory response to the SW test is characterized by higher VT, lower fR, and lower fH. Breath-by-breath measurements during the immediate recovery after a 400-m voluntary maximal swim is proposed as a valid and specific test for directly measuring maximal metabolic parameters and evaluating specific maximal aerobic power in swimming.
Swimming Warm-Up and Beyond: Dryland Protocols and Their Related Mechanisms—A Scoping Review

Abstract:Abstract In swimming, the beneficial effects of the in-water warm-up are often undermined by the long transition periods before competition (≥ 20 min). For that reason, studies comparing the effects of in-water warm-ups followed by dryland activities have been conducted in the swimming literature. This has brought conflicting evidence due to large combinations of supervised and unsupervised warm-up procedures used. Therefore, a scoping review was performed to discuss (1) why warm-up strategies are important for competitive swimming; to identify (2) what are the different warm-up approaches available in the literature, and; to establish (3) what are the main conclusions, considerations and gaps that should be addressed in further research to provide clearer guidance for interventions. The search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases. To be considered eligible, studies must have assessed acute short-term responses of warm-up procedures in swimmers by using randomized controlled trials or pre-post study designs. A total of 42 articles were included in this review. The effectiveness of warm-up responses was evaluated based on the inclusion or not of warm-up, the type of conditioning activity (in-water exercise, in-water exercise combined with dryland or dryland exercise only), its duration, and intensity. (1) Warm-up mechanisms have been mainly related to temperature changes associated to cardiovascular adaptations and short-term specific neuromuscular adaptations. Thus, maintaining muscle activity and body temperature during the transition phase immediately prior to competition could help swimmers' performance; (2) the most common approach before a race usually included a moderate mileage of in-water warm-up (~ 1000 m) performed at an intensity of ≤ 60% of the maximal oxygen consumption, followed by dryland protocols to keep the muscle activity and body temperature raised during the transition phase. Dryland activities could only optimize performance in sprint swimming if performed after the in-water warm-up, especially if heated clothing elements are worn. Using tethered swimming and hand-paddles during warm-ups does not provide superior muscular responses to those achieved by traditional in-water warm-ups, possibly because of acute alterations in swimming technique. In contrast, semi-tethered resisted swimming may be considered as an appropriate stimulus to generate post-activation performance enhancements; (3) nothing has yet been investigated in backstroke, butterfly or individual medley, and there is a paucity of research on the effects of experimental warm-ups over distances greater than 100 m. Women are very under-represented in warm-up research, which prevents conclusions about possible sex-regulated effects on specific responses to the warm-up procedures.

Abstract:The practice of physical exercise is recommended in the prevention of the deterioration of neuromuscular functions in aging. The objectives of this systematic review were to describe the protocols used and the functional fitness indicators evaluated in aquatic exercise programs in adults aged 50 to 80 years. The Pubmed database was used. The keywords were: 1) Physical exercise program or protocols or duration or type of exercise or aquatic exercise, frequency or intensity or indicators; 2) Adults or older adults; 3) Training or indicators, functional fitness, physical fitness. The search strategy considered the components of the Population, Interventions, Comparators, Outcomes, and Study design (PICOS) tool. Nine experimental studies were identified. These studies developed protocols to improve functional fitness in adults aged 50 to 80 years. They were based on sessions of 2 to 5 per week, the work time per session was 30 to 60min, intensities varied between 50 to 95% and totaled between 4 to 24 weeks of intervention. The activities were based on aquatic gymnastic exercises aimed at muscular strengthening of the upper and lower extremities, as well as coordination, balance, agility, cycling and walking exercises submerged in water. The protocols developed to improve functional fitness in adults aged 50 to 80 years were based on general physical exercise prescription guidelines (frequency, duration, intensity and type of activity). The application of aquatic exercises based on gymnastic exercises can provoke positive responses on functional fitness if worked at least 2 to 5 times per week, 30 to 60min/day and at intensities of 50 to 95%. These systematized indicators can be used by professionals working with adults to create and promote aquatic programs to improve functional fitness.
Chronic Physiological Effects of Swim Training Interventions in Non-Elite Swimmers: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:BackgroundSwimming is a popular and potentially health-enhancing exercise, but has received less scientific attention compared with other exercise modes.ObjectiveThe objective of the study was to determine the chronic (long-term) effect of pool swim training on physiological outcomes in non-elite or non-competitive swimming participants.DesignThis study was a systematic review with a meta-analysis.Data SourcesWe searched the electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE and CENTRAL from inception to March 2017.Eligibility CriteriaThe eligibility criteria included randomised controlled trials, quasi-randomised controlled trials and controlled trials of chronic (long-term) swimming interventions in non-elite or non-competitive swimming participants, with a physiological outcome measure.ResultsOur search of 6712 records revealed 29 eligible studies. Swimming had a significant and clinically meaningful effect on maximal oxygen uptake compared with the control in an analysis including multiple populations (mean difference 6.32 mL/kg/min; 95% confidence interval 4.33–8.31), and subgroup analyses of healthy children/adolescents (mean difference 7.93 mL/kg/min; 95% confidence interval 3.31–12.55) and those with asthma (mean difference 9.67 mL/kg/min; 95% confidence interval 5.84–13.51) and healthy adults (mean difference 5.87 mL/kg/min; 95% confidence interval 2.93–8.81). Swimming also resulted in significant improvements in other cardiorespiratory fitness-related outcomes such as maximal minute ventilation (mean difference 0.61 L/min; 95% confidence interval 0.17–1.05), submaximal exercise performance (standardised mean difference 0.64; 95% confidence interval 0.14–1.13) and total exercise test time (mean difference 4.27 min; 95% confidence interval 2.11–6.42). Compared with the control, swimming had significant favourable effects on body mass (mean difference − 2.90 kg, 95% confidence interval − 5.02 to − 0.78), body fat percentage in multiple populations (mean difference − 1.92%; 95% confidence interval − 3.25 to − 0.60) and healthy children/adolescents (mean difference − 1.92%; 95% confidence interval − 4.64 to − 0.80) and lean mass (mean difference 1.96 kg; 95% confidence interval 0.21–3.71), but negative effects on waist circumference in a pooled analysis of two studies involving adults with hypertension (mean difference 4.03 cm; 95% confidence interval 2.58–5.49). Regarding lung function, significant effects of swimming vs. the control were found only for peak expiratory volume in analyses including children/adolescents combined with healthy adults (mean difference 58.74 L/min; 95% confidence interval 29.70–87.78) and children/adolescents with asthma alone (mean difference 63.49 L/min; 95% confidence interval 25.01–101.97). Based on limited data, swimming had similar effects to other exercise modes, except for higher post-intervention body mass index values with swimming vs. running in healthy adults (mean difference 1.18 kg/m2; 95% confidence interval 0.54–1.81).ConclusionsSwimming may offer robust beneficial effects on cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition across multiple populations and effects may be comparable to other exercise modes. Future randomised controlled trials are required to establish the effectiveness of swimming on physiological outcomes in healthy populations and those with non-communicable disease.

Abstract:Background: Lack of physical activity represents a risk factor for both cardiovascular and chronic venous diseases (CVD), nevertheless a specific exercise protocol for CVD patient is still missing. This investigation was aimed to assess the impact of a standardized exercise protocol in a thermal water environment on physical fitness and quality-of-life (QoL) in CVD patients. Methods: Sixteen (16) CVD patients performed 5 standardized exercise sessions in a thermal water pool. Before starting the exercise protocol, the cohort filled International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to determine their physical activity level. At baseline and at the end of the exercise program, leg volume, QoL, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular physical fitness were assessed by means of water plethysmography, validated questionnaire and functional test, blood pressure and heart rate at rest were also reported. Results: All the patients were categorized as physically inactive: average activity time 235.6 (155.2) MET-minutes per week. At the end of the study, a significant leg volume reduction was found (-16%; p < .002). Significant improvement in lower limb strength (p < .0001), endurance (p < .006), rapidity and balance (p < .05) together with decrease in resting heart rate (-1.8%, p < .0001) and systolic blood pressure (-1.1%, p < .04) were reported, significant improvement in bodily pain (p < .0005) and social function (p < .002) QoL items were observed. Conclusions: The proposed exercise protocol in thermal aquatic environment demonstrated to be an effective treatment modality improving both cardiovascular and musculoskeletal outcomes and QoL in sedentary CVD patients. Aquatic environment investigations require proper analysis of the various factors involved, in a standardized and reproducible way. The herein report can be a reference for further studies on different health related conditions.
Cross-adaptation from heat stress to hypoxia: A systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis

Abstract:Cross-adaptation (CA) refers to the successful induction of physiological adaptation under one environmental stressor (e.g., heat), to enable subsequent benefit in another (e.g., hypoxia). This systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis investigated the effect of heat acclimation (HA) on physiological, perceptual and physical performance outcome measures during rest, and submaximal and maximal intensity exercise in hypoxia. Database searches in Scopus and MEDLINE were performed. Studies were included when they met the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome criteria, were of English-language, peer-reviewed, full-text original articles, using human participants. Risk of bias and study quality were assessed using the COnsensus based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments checklist. Nine studies were included, totalling 79 participants (100 % recreationally trained males). The most common method of HA included fixed-intensity exercise comprising 9 ± 3 sessions, 89 ± 24-min in duration and occurred within 39 ± 2 °C and 32 ± 13 % relative humidity. CA induced a moderate , beneficial effect on physiological measures at rest (oxygen saturation: g = 0.60) and during submaximal exercise (heart rate: g = −0.65, core temperature: g = −0.68 and skin temperature: g = −0.72). A small effect was found for ventilation (g = 0.24) and performance measures (peak power: g = 0.32 and time trial time: g = −0.43) during maximal intensity exercise. No effect was observed for perceptual outcome measures. CA may be appropriate for individuals, such as occupational or military workers, whose access to altitude exposure prior to undertaking submaximal activity in hypoxic conditions is restricted. Methodological variances exist within the current literature, and females and well-trained individuals have yet to be investigated. Future research should focus on these cohorts and explore the mechanistic underpinnings of CA.

Abstract:Introduction: Heart rate variability (HRV), the beat-to-beat variation of adjacent heartbeats, is an indicator of the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Increased HRV reflects well-functioning of autonomic control mechanism and cardiovascular health. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a systematic overview of the effects of different physical training modalities on resting HRV and cardiovascular health and risk factors (i.e., baroreflex sensitivity, body fat, body mass, body mass index, blood pressure, heart rate recovery, VO 2 max, and VO 2 peak) in young and middle-aged (mean age of the studies samples up to 44 years), healthy adults. Methods: A systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines was performed. Studies investigating the effects of different physical interventions (endurance, resistance, high-intensity, coordinative, or multimodal training) on HRV were included. Trials were considered eligible if the intervention lasted for at least 4 weeks and participants were regarded as general healthy. Five electronic databases were searched from 2005 to September 8th, 2020. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed by two study quality and reporting assessment scales (TESTEX and STARD HRV ). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020206606. Results: Of 3,991 retrieved records, 26 were considered eligible and analyzed. Twelve studies used an endurance training (of which three included high-intensity sessions), six studies resistance training, four studies coordinative training, two studies high-intensity training, and two studies used a multimodal intervention. Overall, the results showed for all types of intervention an improvement in linear and non-linear HRV parameters and cardiovascular health and risk factors. However, quality assessment revealed some methodological and reporting deficits. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the benefits of different types of physical training interventions on autonomic function and health parameters in young and middle-aged, healthy adults. In conclusion, higher training intensities and frequencies are more likely to improve HRV. For future studies, we recommend adhering to the criteria of methodological standards of exercise interventions and HRV measurements and encourage the use of non-linear HRV parameters.

[Cardiopulmonary exercise tests -- proposals for standardization and interpretation]

Abstract:I give some recommendations concerning methodology and interpretation of cardiopulmonary exercise tests. The recommendations are based on our comprehensive data bank of exercise tests (282 tests and about 200 single parameters assessed during each test). When I expect an exercise capacity lower than 100 W I perform a ramp test; concerning expected higher exercise capacity steps of 25 W every 2 min are preferred. In order to achieve an optimal assessment of exercise capacity an exhaustion or symptom limited test should be performed. The achieved maximum oxygen consumption does not allow differing between cardiac or pulmonary causes of exercise limitation. It is only a marker of cardiopulmonary exercise capacity. A lot of algorithms to assess the maximum oxygen consumption are available, yet the results of calculating oxygen consumption with these algorithms differ considerably. Therefore it is mandatory to mention the used algorithm when referring to a calculated predicted oxygen consumption value. There are also several methods to assess the ventilatory and metabolic anaerobic threshold. For clinical purposes assessing lactate values is not necessary. The so called 4 mmol x l(-1) threshold accords primarily to the threshold assessed with the V-slope method. The Hf-slope may be used as an index for classification of heart failure stages analogous to the NYHA classification. Changes in dead space ventilation are mainly an expression of changed ventilation perfusion relationships and do not give evidence for any specific cardiac or pulmonary disorder. The slope of the equivalent for CO(2) is a relevant parameter of prognosis in cardiac failure. The value of the breathing reserve is not indicative of pathologic ventilatory limitation of exercise. You may find a reduced breathing reserve of about 0 also in healthy volunteers who are driven to exhaustion limited exercise. The value of the breathing reserve depends strongly on the kind of calculation or measuring mode and depending on the mode you can get normal or extremely reduced values in the same test person. The analysis of the flow volume curve during exercise provides some criteria of ventilatory exercise limitation. Pulse oxymetry is relevant only as a safety parameter. Because of its inaccuracy it should not be used to prove desaturation during exercise. The assessment of the alveolar-arterial pO (2) difference is of diagnostic relevance. The Borg scale, the course of the oxygen equivalent of O(2), the respiratory exchange ratio, and the aerobic capacity are of no major relevance for differential diagnosis.

Abstract:Bi-doped glasses with broadband photoluminescence in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range are presently receiving significant consideration for potential applications in telecommunications, widely tunable fiber lasers and spectral converters. However, the origin of NIR emission remains disputed. Here, we report on NIR absorption and emission properties of bismuthate glass and their dependence on the melting temperature. Results clarify that NIR emission occurs from the same centers as it does in Bi-doped glasses. The dependence of absorption and NIR emission of bismuthate glasses on the melting temperature is interpreted as thermal dissociation of Bi2O3 into elementary Bi. Darkening of bismuthate glass melted at 1300 °C is due to the agglomeration of Bi atoms. The presence of Bi nanoparticles is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and element distribution mapping. By adding antimony oxide as an oxidation agent to the glass, NIR emission centers can be eliminated and Bi3+ is formed. By comparing with atomic spectral data, absorption bands at ∼320 , ∼500 , 700 , 800 and 1000 nm observed in Bi-doped glasses are assigned to Bi0 transitions , , , and , respectively, and broadband NIR emission is assigned to the transition .
