Abstract:The current electromagnetic environment brings a growing demand for efficient microwave absorption (MA) materials. Ti3C2T x MXene, one of the 2D transition-metal carbides, is considered to be a promising MA material owing to its superior dielectric properties and structural processability. In order to further improve the MA performance and environmental adaptability of Ti3C2T x MXene, Ti3C2T x MXene-based MA materials enhanced by composition and structure design have been extensively studied and the regulation ideas for its MA properties can be outlined as component optimization and structure manipulation strategies based on the microwave absorption mechanism. Herein, we briefly introduced the microwave absorption mechanism and focused on the design strategies of Ti3C2T x MXene-based MA materials based on recent advances. In addition, the prospects of Ti3C2T x MXene-based MA materials were also discussed.

Abstract:Complex oxide thin-film heterostructures often exhibit magnetic properties different from those known for bulk constituents. This is due to the altered local structural and electronic environment at the interfaces, which affects the exchange coupling and magnetic ordering. The emergent magnetism at oxide interfaces can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization and has a strong effect on spin-dependent transport properties of oxide heterostructures, including magnetic and ferroelectric tunnel junctions. Here, using prototype La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/BaTiO3 heterostructures, we demonstrate that ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3 controls the orbital hybridization and magnetism at heterointerfaces. We observe changes in the enhanced orbital occupancy and significant charge redistribution across the heterointerfaces, affecting the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the interfacial Mn and Ti atoms. Importantly, we find that the exchange coupling between Mn and Ti atoms across the interface is tuned by ferroelectric polarization from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. Our findings provide a viable route to electrically control complex magnetic configurations at artificial multiferroic interfaces, taking a step toward low-power spintronics.

Abstract:Nonfullerene acceptors have recently emerged as promising candidates for organic photovoltaics (OPVs) owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, the varied lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of the acceptors pose difficulty in aligning their energy levels with existing electron transporting layers (ETLs). The authors propose here a facile design of the ETL with a tunable work function by simply varying the annealing temperature of titanium diisopropoxide bis(acetylacetonate) (TIAA) to change the molecular structure of the titanium complex. The energy level tuning is realized without changing the morphological features of the active layer, and as a result, it can enhance the charge extraction efficiency and thus ultimately the power conversion efficiency of the nonfullerene OPV. Our design will provide new important insights for achieving efficient nonfullerene OPVs.

Abstract:MXenes represent a large family of functionalized two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides and carbonitrides. However, most of the understanding on their unique structures and applications stops at the theoretical suggestion and lack of experimental support. Herein, the surface structure and intercalation chemistry of Ti3C2X are clarified at the atomic scale by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The STEM studies show that the functional groups (e.g., OH(-), F(-), O(-)) and the intercalated sodium (Na) ions prefer to stay on the top sites of the centro-Ti atoms and the C atoms of the Ti3C2 monolayer, respectively. Double Na-atomic layers are found within the Ti3C2X interlayer upon extensive Na intercalation via two-phase transition and solid-solution reactions. In addition, aluminum (Al)-ion intercalation leads to horizontal sliding of the Ti3C2X monolayer. On the basis of these observations, the previous monolayer surface model of Ti3C2X is modified. DFT calculations using the new modeling help to understand more about their physical and chemical properties. These findings enrich the understanding of the MXenes and shed light on future material design and applications. Moreover, the Ti3C2X exhibits prominent rate performance and long-term cycling stability as an anode material for Na-ion batteries.

Abstract:<p>MXenes, layered transition metal carbides/nitrides, have already received considerable attention in various research areas including but not limited to energy storage/conversion and photo/electrocatalysis. In fact, the intrinsic property of MXenes is highly tunable by controlling the surface terminations and interlayer spacing. Moreover, synchrotron radiation X‐ray characterizations have shown high potential for exploring the causal relationship between the properties and structure of MXenes. Particularly, operando X‐ray measurements could provide useful insight for better understanding the dynamic process of MXene‐based energy materials. In this review, a comprehensive summary of recent studies on surface controlling, interlayer engineering, and the synchrotron‐based characterizations of MXenes is presented. The outlook of MXenes and applications of advanced X‐ray characterizations are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Chemical manipulation of surface functional groups on two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and/or nitrides (MXenes) provides a wide range of design and application prospects. However, achieving rapid targeted modification of surface groups remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a general strategy to swiftly shear and customize surface groups on Ti 3 C 2 T x −MXene via the flash Joule heating (FJH) reaction within 1 s. Successfully, MXenes with 9 target terminations, including VII A (F, Cl, Br, or I), VI A (O, S, or Se), and V A (N or P), either single or multiple, are synthesized, with a surface content of up to about 76 %. The impact of these terminations is systematically analyzed on electrochemical performance, demonstrating that VI A and V A terminations have higher electrochemical activity than VII A. Particularly, N‐, S‐, and O‐terminated MXenes exhibit enhanced specific capacities and undecayed cycling performance. These findings offer valuable insights for the surface engineering design and performance optimization of functional materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, or carbonitrides (MXenes) have emerged as promising ultrathin materials for nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. However, the contact barrier at metal–semiconductor (MS) junctions still significantly limits the device's performance. Here, we propose a novel strategy—functionalizing accompanied with external electric fields—to tune the MS contact nature in MXene-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, taking 2D Ti 2 C as an example, by means of first-principles calculations. Different Ti 2 CO 2 /Ti 2 CX 2 (X = OH or S) vdW heterostructures are designed via functionalizing Ti 2 C metals to contact with 2D Ti 2 CO 2 . We reveal that OH functionalized vdW MS heterostructure (Ti 2 CO 2 /Ti 2 C(OH) 2 ) can be tuned to the Ohmic contact owing to the strong interlayer interaction inducing a large number of interlayer transferred electrons; while for the sulfurized vdW MS heterostructure (Ti 2 CO 2 /Ti 2 CS 2 ), its Schottky barrier height and contact type can be effectively tuned by external electric field due to the rather weak interlayer interaction. Our work paves a new way for the construction of 2D MXene-based vdW MS heterostructures and demonstrates the great potential of 2D MXenes in future nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:MXenes have attracted intensive attention because of their widespread applications. As a well-studied member of the MXene family, Ti2CO2 has been demonstrated to be semiconducting with ultrahigh carrier mobility, acting as a candidate material for electronic devices. In this work, the influence of layer thickness on the electrical conductivity of Ti2CO2 is investigated combined with first-principles density functional calculations and the Boltzmann transport theory. Because of the layer interaction-induced band splitting, the band gap of Ti2CO2 generally decreases with increasing layers. Based on the generalized gradient approximation, the band gap in monolayer Ti2CO2 is determined to be 0.260 eV, which decreases to 0.0369 eV in the five-layer configuration. Further, the strain influence on the electronic structure of the multilayer Ti2CO2 is studied. With increasing compression strains perpendicular to the basal plane, the configuration is found to transform from a semiconductor to a semimetal, then to a semiconductor, and at last to a metal. This result implies that the electronic property of the multilayer Ti2CO2 can be efficiently manipulated by strain and that the multilayer configurations could be applied in strain sensors. Moreover, our work may open a door to realize bulk semiconductors through compression of accordion-like multilayer MXenes.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of nanoconfined water and charge storage mechanism are crucial in achieving ultrahigh electrochemical performance of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes). We propose a facile method to manipulate the nanoconfined water through surface chemistry modification. By introducing oxygen and nitrogen surface groups, more active sites were created for Ti3C2 MXene, also with the interlayer spacing significantly increased by accommodating three-layer nanoconfined water. Exceptionally high capacitance of 550 F g–1 (2000 F cm–3) was obtained with outstanding high-rate performance. The atomic scale elucidation of layer-dependent properties of nanoconfined water and pseudocapacitive charge storage was deeply probed through a combination of ‘computational and experimental microscopy’. We believe the understanding and manipulation strategy of nanoconfined water will shed light on pushing MXene and other 2D materials to better electrochemical performance.

Tunable Rapid Electron Transport in Titanium Oxide Thin Films

Abstract:Rapid electron transport in the quantum well triggers many novel physical phenomena and becomes a critical point for the high-speed electronics. Here, we found electrical properties of the titanium oxide changed from semiconducting to metallic as the degree of oxidation decreased and Schottky quantum well was formed at the interface. We take the asymmetry interface electron scattering effect into consideration when studying the electrical transport properties of the multilayer thin films. A novel physical conductivity model for the multilayer thin films was developed. We found electron would be transferred from the low-mobility semiconducting and metallic conductive channels to the high-mobility Schottky quantum well conductive channel with an in-plane applied electric field. Electron concentration and mobility of the forming 2DEG in the Schottky quantum well could be tuned thus the nano-devices exhibited non-linear voltage-current curves. The differential resistivity of the nano-devices could decrease by two orders with increasing electric field at room temperature. Weak electron localization of electrons has been experimentally observed in our nano-devices at low temperature, which further demonstrated the existence of 2DEG in the Schottky quantum well. Our work will provide us new physics about the rapid electron transport in the multilayer thin films, and bring novel functional devices for the modern microelectronic industry.

Abstract:MXenes, a class of two-dimensional materials, have garnered significant attention due to their versatile surface chemistry and customizable properties. In this study, we investigate the work function (WF) tuning capabilities of MXene Ti3C2Tx, where Tx denotes the surface termination, synthesized via both conventional hydrogen fluoride-etched and recently reported molten salt-etched routes. When MXene samples are subjected to gas phase reactions, WF variations exceeding 0.6 eV are achieved, highlighting the potential for precise WF control. Notably, the WF increases from ∼4.23 eV (in N-doped MXene etched using molten salt) to ∼4.85 eV (N-doped MXene etched using HF). Complementary density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal WF tuning across a >1 eV range via modification of the surface with different terminal groups (bare metal, F*, O*, N*, and Cl*). These changes in WF are attributed to surface termination modifications and the formation of TiO2 and TiN phases during annealing. DFT calculations further unveil an inverse correlation between the WF and the electron affinity of surface terminations. The findings from this comprehensive study provide insights into the tunable WF of MXenes, paving the way for their potential applications as interfacial layers in photovoltaic, energy conversion, and storage technologies.

Abstract:The ultrafast charge‐carrier dynamics of layer‐dependent Ti3C2Tx are captured using both narrowband and ultrabroadband terahertz time‐domain spectroscopy (THz‐TDS) (0.5–15 THz) techniques. This study reveals the layer‐dependent electronic localization phenomenon in Ti3C2Tx for the first time. The findings also shed light on the trade‐off relationship between the dielectric screening (substrate) and charge carrier screening (Ti3C2Tx) effects, offering valuable insights for the future optimization of optoelectronic devices. The transport properties of charge carriers in MXene, a promising material, have been studied using terahertz time‐domain spectroscopy (THz‐TDS) to examine its potential applications in optical and electronic devices. However, previous studies have been limited by narrow frequency ranges, which have hindered the understanding of the intrinsic mechanisms of carrier transport in MXenes. To address this issue, ultrabroadband THz‐TDS with frequencies of up to 15 THz to investigate the complex photoconductances of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) films with different thicknesses are employed. The findings indicate that the electronic localization is substrate‐dependent, and this effect decreases with an increase in the number of layers. This is attributed to the screening effect of the high carrier density in Ti3C2Tx. Additionally, the layer‐independent photocarrier relaxations revealed by optical pump THz probe spectroscopy (OPTP) provide evidence of the carrier heating‐induced screening effect. These results are significant for practical applications in both scientific research and various industries.

Abstract:Abstract A good method of synthesizing Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) is critical for ensuring its success in practical applications, e.g., electromagnetic interference shielding, electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, sensors, and biomedicine. The main concerns focus on the moderation of the approach, yield, and product quality. Herein, a modified approach, organic solvent-assisted intercalation and collection, was developed to prepare Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes. The new approach simultaneously solves all the concerns, featuring a low requirement for facility (centrifugation speed < 4000 rpm in whole process), gram-level preparation with remarkable yield (46.3%), a good electrical conductivity (8672 S cm −1 ), an outstanding capacitive performance (352 F g −1 ), and easy control over the dimension of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes (0.47–4.60 μm 2 ). This approach not only gives a superb example for the synthesis of other MXene materials in laboratory, but sheds new light for the future mass production of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene.

Abstract:Defect passivation and tailoring of perovskite–charge transport layer interfaces are critical strategies to minimize the recombination losses and improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we use titanium carbide MXene (Ti3C2T x ) to tailor the electronic properties of the electron transport layer (ETL) and ETL/perovskite interface in inverted (p–i–n) PSCs and correlate them to the observed PCE. MXene doping in a [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (M-PC61BM)-based ETL results in an improved electrical conductivity and ETL/perovskite interface band alignment. A red shift in the Ag(2) peak in the Raman spectrum and a localized upshift of the Fermi level calculated using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy (SKPFM) confirm the n-doping of PC61BM. Consequently, PSC devices with M-PC61BM as the ETL show a higher PCE of 18% than PC61BM ETL-based control devices (PCE = 15.2%). Importantly, our study proves that the improvement in the open-circuit voltage (V OC) and fill factor (FF) depends on how MXene is integrated into the PSC, i.e., as a dopant in the PC61BM ETL, an interfacial layer between the perovskite and ETL, or a standalone ETL. Through comprehensive photoluminescence, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, space-charge limited current, and scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy-based analyses, we establish that the introduction of MXene in PSCs has multiple benefits, including improvement in carrier transport, passivation and trap state reduction, and better interfacial energy alignment. Further, we unravel the most prominent factor influencing device performance in each mode of MXene introduction. Hence, the study reinforces the potential of Ti3C2T x MXene as a versatile material for high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:AbstractMXenes are a class of two‐dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides that have shown promise for high‐rate pseudocapacitive energy storage. However, the effects that irreversible oxidation have on the surface chemistry and electrochemical properties of MXenes are still not understood. Here we report on a controlled anodic oxidation method which improves the rate performance of titanium carbide MXene (Ti3C2Tx, Tx refers to ‐F, =O, ‐Cl and ‐OH) electrodes in acidic electrolytes. The capacitance retention at 2000 mV s−1 (with respect to the lowest scan rate of 5 mV s−1) increases gradually from 38 % to 66 % by tuning the degree of anodic oxidation. At the same time, a loss in the redox behavior of Ti3C2Tx is evident at high anodic potentials after oxidation. Several analysis methods are employed to reveal changes in the structure and surface chemistry while simultaneously introducing defects, without compromising electrochemically active sites, are key factors for improving the rate performance of Ti3C2Tx. This study demonstrates improvement of the electrochemical performance of MXene electrodes by performing a controlled anodic oxidation.
Atomic Valence Reversal-Induced Polarization Resonance Spurs Highly Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in α-Fe2O3@Carbon Microtubes

Abstract:Variegation and complexity of polarization relaxation loss in many heterostructured materials provide available mechanisms to seek a strong electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. Here we construct a unique heterostructured compound that bonds α-Fe2O3 nanosheets of the (110) plane on carbon microtubes (CMTs). Through effective alignment between the Fermi energy level of CMTs and the conduction band position of α-Fe2O3 nanosheets at the interface, we attain substantial polarization relaxation loss via novel atomic valence reversal between Fe(III) ↔ Fe(III-) induced with periodic electron injection from conductive CMTs under EMW irradiation to give α-Fe2O3 nanosheets. Such heterostructured materials possess currently reported minimum reflection loss of -84.01 dB centered at 10.99 GHz at a thickness of 3.19 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (reflection loss ≤ -10 dB) of 7.17 GHz (10.83-18 GHz) at 2.65 mm. This work provides an effective strategy for designing strong EMW absorbers by combining highly efficient electron injection and atomic valence reversal.
Enhanced Optical Absorption of Fe-, Co- and Ni- Decorated Ti3C2 MXene: A First-Principles Investigation

Abstract:Surface functionalization on novel transition metal carbides Ti3C2 MXene has been demonstrated to be effective strategy to broaden potential application. Herein, the effect of surface decoration of transition magnetic metals (Fe-, Co-, Ni-) on the electronic structure and optical properties of Ti3C2 MXene is studied using first principle calculations. Energy band structures and corresponding density of electronic states investigations have shown that interlamellar spacing between Ti-layer and C-layer, as well as specific surface area, is inclined to expand after surface decoration. Besides, obvious peaks of d orbit have been observed, and demonstrated to play a dominant role in electronic states in Fe-, Co-, Ni–Ti3C2 composite. More importantly, surface decoration of transition magnetic metal Fe-, Co-, and Ni-could greatly promote optical absorption coefficient of Ti3C2 nanomaterials, covering ultraviolet region, visible region and infrared region. The increment rate reaches 50% within visible and ultraviolet region for Ni–Ti3C2 composite, while the increment rate of Fe-substituted Ti3C2 exhibits even greater than 100%. The remarkable enhanced optical absorbing properties over wide spectral region may be associated with interlamellar space expansion accompanied with more active sites and increased electronic mobility. All these findings are considered to broaden practical application of low-dimensional Ti3C2 nanomaterial towards photoelectric devices.

Abstract:AbstractDespite the fact that the high conductivity of two‐dimensional laminated transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) contributes to the outstanding electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding by the reflection of electromagnetic waves (EWs), it is difficulty to improve EMI shielding by pursuing higher conductivity due to the limitation of intrinsic properties. Here, we achieve superior EMI shielding by introducing the absorption of EWs in MXenes with micro‐sized wrinkles which are induced by abundant Ti vacancies under chemical etching. The shielding effectiveness is up to 107 dB at a thickness of 20 μm. Combining with atomic‐scale structure observation and the first‐principles calculations, it is concluded that the promotion of EMI shielding originates from the resonant absorption of formed electric dipoles induced by the asymmetrical distribution of charge densities near Ti vacancies. Our results could open a new vista for developing two‐dimensional EMI shielding materials.
