Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil and its movement into food chain through vegetable dietary poses a risk to human health. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of humic acid (HA) and two cultivars of Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis L. (pak choi) with differing Cd accumulation abilities on Cd accumulation in different Cd contaminated Ferralsol, Histosol and Luvisol soils. The results showed that HA significantly increased soil pH and cation exchange capacity in Ferralsol (acidic) and Histosol (neutral) soils. HA was more effective in Ferralsol and Histosol soil in reducing bioavailable Cd and its accumulation in both cultivars. Low and high Cd accumulating cultivars combined with HA effectively reduced shoot Cd concentration by 7-34% and 19-35% in Histosol soil, whereas 22-34% and 11-26% in Ferralsol soil, respectively. However, no such reduction was observed for Cd accumulation and bioavailability in Cd-contaminated Luvisol (alkaline) soil. Application of HA enhanced shoot dry biomass in both cultivars grown in Histosol and Ferralsol soils. Therefore, the HA amendment combination with low Cd accumulating cultivars of pak choi could be an effective method for phytostabilization and reduce health risks associated with consuming this vegetable grown in Cd-contaminated acidic and neutral pH soils.
Effects of Two Sludge Application on Fractionation and Phytotoxicity of Zinc and Copper in Soil

Abstract:The potential harm of heavy metals is a primary concern in application of sludge to the agricultural land. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of two sludges on fractionation of Zn and Cu in soil and their phytotoxicity to pakchoi. The loamy soil was mixed with 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% (by weight) of digested sewage sludge (SS) and composted sludge (SC). The additions of the both sludges caused a significant raise in all fractions, resulting in that exchangeable (EXCH) and organic matter (OM) became predominance for Zn and organic bound Cu occupied the largest portion. There was more available amount for Zn and Cu in SS treatments than SC treatments. During the pot experiment, the concentration of Zn in EXCH, carbonate (CAR) and OM and Cu in EXCH and OM fractions decreased in all treatments, so their bioavailability reduced. Germination rate and plant biomass decreased when the addition rate was high and the best yield appeared in 20% mixtures at the harvest of pakchoi. The two sludges increased tissue contents of Zn and Cu especially in the SS treatments. Zn in pakchoi was not only in relationship to Delta EXCH and Delta CAR forms but also in Delta OM forms in the sludge-soil mixtures. Tissue content of Cu in pakchoi grown on SC-soils could not be predicted by Delta EXCH. These correlation rates between Zn and Cu accumulation in pakchoi and variation of different fractions increased with time, which might indicate that sludges represented stronger impacts on the plant in long-term land application.

Abstract:In a pot experiment, pig manure (PM) and chicken manure (CM) were applied to an acidic soil at application rates of 2%, 4% and 8% (W/W) to evaluate their effects on the growth, Cu and Zn uptake and transfer of five cultivars of pakchoi (Brassica chinesis L.). The results showed that alkaline manures significantly increased the biomass of pakchois, and also pH and electrical conductivity of the soil. Both 0.01 M CaCl2 and 1.0 M NH4NO3 salt solutions predict the Zn transfer from soil to pakchois well, but not for Cu. For the cultivar Siyueman, the transfer factors of Cu (or Zn) in the PM treatments were higher than that in the CM treatments. In our experiment the Cu and Zn concentrations in pakchois did not exceed the Chinese Food Hygiene Standard, but more attention should be paid to heavy metals risk on pakchois at lower soil pH and salt impairment by manures application.

Abstract:Exposure to heavy metal(loid)s (HM) through contaminated food chains poses significant health risks to humans. While soil amendments are known to reduce HM bioavailability, their effects on bioaccessibility and health risks in soil-pakchoi-human systems remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse pot experiment coupling soil immobilization with bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment for Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. Four amendments (attapulgite, shell powder, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and biochar) were applied to soil, resulting in changes to soil characteristics (pH and organic matter), plant dry weight, and exchangeable fractions of As and Cd. Among the tested amendments, biochar exhibited the highest effectiveness in reducing the risk of Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption. The bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment revealed that the application of 5% biochar resulted in the lowest hazard index, significantly decreasing it from 1.36 to 0.33 in contaminated soil. Furthermore, the structural equation model demonstrated that pH played a critical role in influencing remediation efficiency, impacting the exposure of the human body to Cd and As. In conclusion, our study offers a new perspective on mitigating exposure risks of soil HM and promoting safe crop production. The results underscore the importance of considering bioaccessibility in health risk assessment and highlight the potential of biochar as a promising amendment for reducing Cd and As exposure from pakchoi consumption.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) contamination in soils is an environmental issue worldwide that threatens the quality and safety of crops and human health. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the growth, mycorrhizal colonization, and Pb and Cd accumulation of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L. cv. Suzhou) in response to inoculation with three arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (AMF), Funneliformis mosseae, Glomus versiforme, and Rhizophagus intraradices, aimed at exploring how AMF inoculation affected safe crop production by altering plant-soil interaction. The symbiotic relationship was well established between pakchoi and three AMF inocula even under Pb or Cd stress, where the colonization rates in the roots ranged from 24.5% to 38.5%. Compared with the non-inoculated plants, the shoot biomass of the inoculated plants increased by 8.7%–22.1% and 9.2%–24.3% in Pb and Cd addition treatments, respectively. Both glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) and polyphosphate concentrations reduced as Pb or Cd concentration increased. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculation significantly enhanced total absorbed Pb and Cd (except for a few samples) and increased the distribution ratio (root/shoot) in pakchoi at each Pb or Cd addition level. However, the three inocula significantly decreased Pb concentration in pakchoi shoots by 20.6%–67.5% in Pb addition treatments, and significantly reduced Cd concentration in the shoots of pakchoi in the Cd addition treatments (14.3%–54.1%), compared to the non-inoculated plants. Concentrations of Pb and Cd in the shoots of inoculated pakchois were all below the allowable limits of Chinese Food Safety Standard. The translocation factor of Pb or Cd increased significantly with increasing Pb or Cd addition levels, while there was no significant difference among the three AMF inocula at each metal addition level. Meanwhile, compared with the non-inoculated plants, AMF inocula significantly increased soil pH, electrical conductivity, and Pb or Cd concentrations in soil organic matter in the soils at the highest Pb or Cd dose after harvest of pakchoi, whereas the proportion of bioavailable Pb or Cd fraction declined in the AMF inoculated soil. Our study provided the first evidence that AM fungi colonized the roots of pakchoi and indicated the potential application of AMF in the safe production of vegetables in Pb or Cd contaminated soils.
Slow-release nitrogen fertilizers can improve yield and reduce Cd concentration in pakchoi ( Brassica chinensis L.) grown in Cd-contaminated soil

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) pollution in vegetable crops has become a serious problem in recent years. Owing to the limited availability of arable land resources, large areas of Cd-contaminated lands are inevitably being used for the production of vegetables, posing great risks to human health via the food chain. However, strategies to improve yield and reduce Cd concentration in crops grown in contaminated soils are being developed. In the present study, using pot experiments, we investigated the effects of two slow-release nitrogen fertilizers (SRNFs), resin-coated ammonium nitrate (Osmocote 313s ), and resin-coated urea (urea 620 ), on the growth and Cd concentration of the Cd-contaminated pakchoi. The results showed that pakchoi grown in soil containing 5 mg kg −1 of Cd-induced oxidative stress (indicated by malondialdehyde (MDA), H 2 O 2 , and O 2 ·− ) and photosynthesis inhibition, which in turn was restored with the application of SRNFs. However, pakchoi grown in Cd-contaminated soil supplied with Osmocote 313s and urea 620 showed 103 and 203 % increase in fresh weight and 51–55 % and 44–56 % decrease in Cd concentration, respectively, as compared with their controls (pakchoi treated with instant soluble nitrogen fertilizers). On the basis of an increase in their tolerance index (47–238 %) and a decrease in their translocation factor (7.5–21.6 %), we inferred that the plants treated with SRNFs have a stronger tolerance to Cd and a lower efficiency of Cd translocation to edible parts than those treated with instant soluble nitrogen fertilizers. Therefore, in terms of both crop production and food safety, application of SRNFs could be an effective strategy for improving both biomass production and quality in pakchoi grown under Cd stress.

Abstract:We investigated the effects of dicyandiamide (DCD) on the growth and Cd concentrations in pakchoi cultivated under different instant soluble N fertilizers [ammonium sulfate, ammonium sulfate and sodium nitrate (1:1, ammonium/nitrate), and urea] in Cd-contaminated soils. The results showed that the fresh weight of the edible parts of Cd-stressed pakchoi were increased by 583.3%, 41.5%, and 206.8% under ammonium, ammonium/nitrate, and urea treatments in the presence of DCD, respectively compared with control, and the tolerance index and photosynthetic rate significantly increased, whereas no significant changes were observed under nitrate supply. Under all N treatments with DCD, the MDA and H2O2 contents and the superoxide radical production rate in the leaves of pakchoi were decreased, with the highest reduction occurred in ammonium and urea treatments. Cd concentrations in the leaves of pakchoi fertilized with ammonium, ammonium/nitrate, and urea were lowered by 58.3%, 34.0%, and 44.5% and those in the petioles were lowered by 61.8%, 29.4%, and 55.6%, respectively. Cd concentration in the leaves and petioles of pakchoi in the nitrate treatment did not differ significantly from control. These changes could be attributable to the reduction in the acidification of rhizosphere soil in response to the combined application of N fertilizer and DCD. Accordingly, in Cd-contaminated soils with a low buffering capacity, the application of DCD combined with ammonium, ammonium/nitrate, or urea N fertili-zers could alleviate Cd-induced growth stress and inhibit photosynthesis in pakchoi plants and effectively minimize the Cd accumulation.
Heterogeneity of Humic/fulvic Acids Derived from Composts Explains the Differences in Accelerating Soil Cd-hyperaccumulation by Sedum Alfredii

Abstract:The hyperaccumulating mechanism concerning heavy metal activation or passivation and plant response triggered by fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) recruitments are investigated herein. We carefully examine the Cd activation effect by various FA and HA, tracing from pig, goat, and duck manure composts to straw compost and commercial materials (i.e., PC, GC, DC, SC, and CM), as well as their roles in plant growth promotion and Cd uptake. Our results indicate that due to the decrease of soil pH and their multiple functional groups, the contents of available Cd (AE-Cd) increased by 4.3-4.8% and 3.6-6.3% when all FA and HA sources were applied for 30 days. A 13.1-19.9% increase in AE-Cd was observed when CFA, DFA, and PFA were applied for five days, and a 9.5% increment was found when PHA was applied for 10 days. In the pot experiment, the Cd accumulation in plants increased by 2.78 and 2.17 folds with PFA and PHA applications, respectively, compared to the blank control group. This result can be attributed to the stimulative effects of the simultaneous Sedum alfredii growth and Cd phytoavailability. Notably, the Cd accumulation increased by 2.26 times with the SFA amendment due to the predominant stimulation effect to the phytoavailable Cd rather than plant growth. However, slight inhibitory effects were observed upon plant growth or Cd uptake, which led to the reduction of the Cd accumulation with DHA, SHA, and CHA employments. Consistently, the corresponding soil Cd removal efficiencies were 43.5% and 34.6% with PFA and PHA, respectively, which hold abundant O- and N-containing groups. Our research aims to gain insights into the ternary interaction in the presence of heavy metal, humic substances, and S. alfredii to simultaneously accelerate Cd activation and hyperaccumulation.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (HMs) are predominant pollutants normally coexisting at electronic waste dumping sites or in agricultural soils irrigated with wastewater. The accumulation of PAHs and HMs in food crops has become a major concern for food security. This study explored the hydroponic uptake of 16 priority PAHs and 5 HMs (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) by pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.). PAHs exhibited stronger inhibition on pak choi growth and physiological features than HMs. Five HMs were categorized into high-impact HMs (Cr, Cu, and Pb) and low-impact HMs (Cd and Zn) with distinct behavior under the coexposure with PAHs, and low-impact HMs showed synergistic toxicity effects with PAHs. Coexposure to PAHs and HMs slightly decreased the uptake and translocation of PAHs by pak choi, possibly attributing to the commutative hindering effects on root adsorption or cation-pi interactions. The bioconcentration factors in PAHs + HMs treatments were independent of the octanol-water partition coefficient (K-ow), owing to the cation-pi interaction associated change of K-ow and induced defective root system. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and influential factors of PAHs uptake in Brassica chinensis L. and gives clues for reassessing the environmental risks of PAHs in food crops.
Inoculation with multifunctional Bacillus sp. NEAU-DCB1-2 mitigates chromium toxicity in pakchoi ( Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis ) through a multi-level mechanism

Abstract:Soil chromium (Cr) accumulation is escalating, severely hindering plant growth and development. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have shown potential in enhancing plant tolerance to heavy metals. However, the role and mechanisms of Cr(VI)-reducing PGPB strains in improving the growth of pakchoi under Cr toxicity remain unclear. This study aimed to isolate a Cr(VI)-reducing PGPB strain from Cr-contaminated soil, evaluate its effect on pakchoi growth under Cr(VI) stress, and investigate the mechanisms involved. Our findings showed that Bacillus sp. NEAU-DCB1-2 effectively reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and produced indole-3-acetic acid and siderophores. Under Cr(VI) stress, inoculation with NEAU-DC1-2 significantly promoted seed germination and early growth of pakchoi. In pot experiments, NEAU-DCB1-2 significantly increased biomass accumulation, plant height, and root length of Cr(VI)-treated pakchoi seedlings, while reducing the Cr(VI) content in root, shoot and soil. Moreover, NEAU-DCB1-2 greatly increased catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase activities in seedlings under Cr(VI) stress, thereby reducing malondialdehyde content. Transcriptome analysis indicated substantial alterations in gene expression patterns after inoculation with NEAU-DCB1-2 under Cr(VI) stress. Further analyses revealed that NEAU-DCB1-2 mainly affected the responses of antioxidant system, metal chelation and transport, together with auxin, abscisic acid, and jasmonic acid signaling to Cr(VI) stress. Conclusively, the Cr(VI)-reducing PGPB strain NEAU-DCB1-2 significantly enhances the growth and Cr tolerance of pakchoi through multiple mechanisms, offering a valuable microbial resource for mitigating the adverse effects of heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils on the yield and safety of vegetable crops.

Abstract:Though the interaction between humic acid (HA) and heavy metals has been widely reported, the effects of HA on the toxicity of heavy metals to plants are still in debate. In this study, the regulation mechanisms of HA on Pb stress in tea plant (Camellia sinensis L.) was investigated through hydroponic experiments, and the experimental results were explained by using transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning transmission X-ray microscopes (STXM) and isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) differential proteomics. Significant alleviation of Pb stress was found with HA coexistence. TEM results showed that HA greatly mitigated the damage of cells caused by Pb stress. Compared with sole Pb treatment, the addition of HA increased the contents of pectin and pectic acid in the cell wall by 10.5% and 30.5%, while arabinose (Ara) and galactose (Gal) decreased by 20.5% and 15.9%, respectively, which were beneficial for increasing Pb adsorption capacity of the cell wall and promoting cell elongation. Moreover, iTRAQ differential proteomics analysis proved that HA strengthened the antioxidant system, promoted the synthesis of cell wall, and stabilized protein and sulfur-containing substance metabolism in molecular level. Notably, the concentration of calcium (Ca) in the cell wall of HA coexistence treatment was 47.4% higher than Pb treatment. STXM results also indicated that the distribution of Ca in the cell wall was restored with the presence of HA. This might promote the formation of the egg-box model, thus alleviating Pb stress in cells. Our results reveal the regulation mechanisms of HA on Pb detoxification in plants and provide useful information for improving the safety of agricultural products. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Humic Acid and Selenium Supplementation Modulate the Growth and Antioxidant Potential of Chili under Cadmium Stress

Abstract:Maximizing food production under adverse conditions is a major challenge to food security and sustainability in the face of population growth and climatic change. The use of amendments applied as a supplement under adverse conditions may play a significant role in the mitigation of biotic and abiotic stress. This study aimed to explore the morpho-physio-biochemical changes in chili in response to cadmium (Cd) stress. The present study investigated the effects of foliar-applied selenium (Na2SeO4) (3 μM) and soil-applied humic acid (250 mg kg−1 w/w soil) in the sole and synergistic form under varying levels of cadmium stress (0, 2, and 4 mM using CdCl2) in chili. Results revealed that a linear decrease was noticed in the growth, biomass, and phenological attributes of chili plants by increasing the Cd stress. More reduction was noticed at the higher levels of Cd stress as compared to control due lowering plant dry weight (18.15 and 39.67%), relative water content (RWC) (10.73 and 24.17%), total chlorophyll concentrations (16.01 and 31.44%) and increased electrolyte leakage (49.44 and 129.35%) and malonaldehyde contents (MDA) (68.41 and 104.04%). Dry biomass significantly increased with humic acid and selenium treatments, regardless of cadmium level. The reduced enzymatic activities associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification, underscores the pivotal role of Se and humic acid in maintaining redox homeostasis. The combined effect of selenium and humic acid proved better results as compared to the sole application in minimizing Cd uptake in roots and fruit. This study demonstrates that the application of humic acid and selenium activates physio-biochemical defense responses against cadmium stress in chili plants and provides significant pavement for the cultivation of chili in cadmium-containing soils with a target of high-yielding and quality.

Abstract:Anthropogenic chromium (Cr) pollution in soils poses a great threat to human health through the food chain. It is imperative to understand Cr accumulation properties in common vegetables because the proportion of vegetables consumed has increased with the improvement of living standards. This study investigated Cr accumulation in pak choi ( L.) grown on six representative agricultural soils in China. Chromium concentration in the edible parts of pak choi generally increased with soil Cr concentrations following the order: Ustic Cambosols > Periudic Argosols > Mollisols > Calcaric Regosols > Stagnic Anthrosols > Udic Ferrisols. Simple correlation analysis indicated that Cr concentration in pak choi was significantly correlated with the total Cr, Mehlich-3-extractable Cr, and Cr(VI). Stepwise multiple regression analysis also demonstrated that the phytoavailability of Cr was strongly correlated with the extractable fraction by Mehlich-3, total Cr concentration, soil organic matter, and Fe(II). Critical Cr concentrations in these six soils were evaluated for pak choi based on the maximum safe level for daily intake of Cr. Total soil Cr can be used as Cr thresholds for potential dietary toxicity in pak choi. Mehlich-3-extractable Cr is most suitable to be used as Cr thresholds for Periudic Argosols, Udic Ferrisols, Mollisols, and Ustic Cambosols, with values of 20.7, 15.8, 21.2, and 20.4 mg kg, respectively, whereas Cr(VI) is most suitable for Calcaric Regosols and Stagnic Anthrosols, with values of 26.5 and 28.0 mg kg, respectively.
Application of exogenous glycinebetaine alleviates lead toxicity in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) by promoting antioxidant enzymes and suppressing Pb accumulation

Abstract:Lead (Pb) poses an adverse effect on plant growth and development. Glycinebetaine (GB) plays an important role in plants response to stress environment. The study was performed to examine the potential of exogenous GB (0.5, 1, 2, and 5 mM) in alleviating Pb toxicity, the physiological and biochemical responses in pakchoi under 100 μM Pb stress by hydroponic experiment. Pb stress significantly decreased the growth, contents of pigment and mineral nutrient, and activities of antioxidative enzymes (CAT, SOD, and APX) in roots and shoots of pakchoi, while it caused a significant increase in Pb and ROS accumulation both in roots and shoots of pakchoi in comparison to the control. Exogenous application of GB improved leaf and root length, fresh and dry weight, mineral nutrient, and pigment contents of pakchoi under Pb stress. GB also effectively enhanced antioxidative enzyme activities and the accumulation of proline, soluble sugar, and GB and reduced the oxidative stress and Pb contents in shoots and roots of pakchoi. Principle component analysis (PCA) provided useful information on the classification of Pb tolerance according to the response to GB. Overall, the 1 mM GB was more effective to ameliorate the detrimental impacts of Pb stress. These findings suggested that GB application might be considered an effective strategy for alleviating Pb toxicity and enhancing the tolerance of pakchoi plants under Pb stress.

Abstract:To protect agro-systems and food security, study on the effect of microplastics and heavy metals on edible plants is of great significance. Existing studies mostly used virgin microplastics to evaluate their effects on plants, effects of naturally aged microplastics and their combined effects with heavy metals are rarely explored. In this study, single and combined effect of polyethylene microplastics (PE, both virgin and naturally aged) and cadmium (Cd) on pakchoi under seedling and mature stages were analyzed from perspectives of growth inhibition, oxidative damage, nutrition content and soil enzyme activities. Results showed that inhibiting effects of naturally aged PE (PEa) on the growth of pakchoi were stronger than virgin PE (PEv), whereas co-contamination of PEa and Cd was less toxic than that of PEv and Cd. The co-contamination of PE and Cd could inhibit pakchoi dry biomass by over 85 %. Both single and combined contamination of PE and Cd promoted soil fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDA) activities, which were 1.11 to 2.04 times of that in control group. Soluble sugar contents under co-contamination of PEa and Cd were 14 % to 22 % higher than those in control group. PEa and PEv showed different effects on oxidative damage of pakchoi. Compared with PEv, catalase (CAT) activities were more sensitive with PEa, whereas PEa had lower effect on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. The response of pakchoi to PE and Cd changed with growth stage. Chlorophyll contents in pakchoi under seedling stage were generally higher than those under mature stage. For Cd contaminated soils, PE benefited pakchoi growth under seedling stage, i.e. antagonistic effect between Cd and PE but hindered their growth under mature stage, i.e. synergistic effect. The results unraveled here emphasized PE, especially PEa, could trigger negative effects on agro-systems, whereas PE could be beneficial for heavy metal contaminated agro-systems under specific situations.
Combined effect of heavy metals and bromine flame retardants for pakchoi

Abstract:The combined pollution of heavy metals and organic chemicals in soil is a fact that can not be ignored.It is significant to acquire environmental behavior and combined effect of heavy metals and organic chemicals for adealing with soil remediation problem and evaluating ecological security.A 45-day pot experiment using aged field soil was performed to investigate the effects of cadmium,copper,tetrabromobisphenol A(TBBPA)and decabromodiphenyl ether(BDE209)on the growth of pakchoi.Results showed that Cd or Cu alone caused a significant reduction in pakchoi biomass(by 9.2％ and 9.0％,respectively)and leaf chlorophyll content.They also induced leaf reactive oxygen species(ROS)and malondialdehyde(MDA)level.TBBPA or BDE209 alone showed limited effects on pakchoi. When compared with effects by Cd or Cu alone,TBBPA significantly decreased bioconcentration factor (BCF)of heavy metals in leaves(by 25.5％ and 15.9％,respectively),increased total biomass by 9.3％ and 14.6％ in Cd and Cu treatments respectively,alleviating the inhibition effects of Cd or Cu on pakchoi chlorophyll content.However,BDE209 showed no significant effect on BCF values of Cd or Cu and oxidant stress to pakchoi.It could only alleviate the lipid peroxidation induced by Cd or Cu,but could not alleviate the growth and chlorophyll inhibition to pakchoi.
Effect of Humic Acid Functionalized Bentonite on Heavy Metal Uptake by Spinach (Spinacia oleracea cv. All Green) Grown on Metal Contaminated Soil

Abstract:A pot culture study was conducted to investigate the impact of applying humic acid functionalized bentonite (HA-B) on the uptake of heavy metals by spinach. When the soil was amended with 7.5 g kg-1 of humic acid intercalated bentonite, there was a significant improvement in plant growth. Specifically, plant growth increased by 180.7%, 212%, and 231% during the first, second, and third cuttings, respectively. Additionally, the concentration of metals in the spinach decreased substantially, with reductions of 62.8, 69.7, and 77.7% for Cd and 34.7%, 45.2%, and 64.7% for Ni during the first, second, and third cuttings, respectively, when 7.5 g kg-1 of humic acid functionalized bentonite was applied. Furthermore, the addition of humic acid intercalated bentonite at a rate of 7.5 g kg-1 to the soil significantly lowered the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of metals. The BCF decreased by 36.3%, 40%, and 55.2% for Cd and 15.2%, 13%, and 34.7% for Ni during the first, second, and third cuttings, respectively, indicating a reduced uptake of these metals by the plants. Moreover, the non-cancer health risk through hazard quotient (HQ) computation showed that the risk was significantly reduced due to consumption of spinach by the application of 7.5 g kg-1 of humic acid intercalated bentonite.
Temporal variations in absorption and translocation of heavy metal(loid)s in pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) under open-field and greenhouse cultivation

Abstract:Elucidating the absorption and translocation of heavy metal(loid)s by common vegetables across different growth environments and stages is crucial for conducting accurate environmental risk assessments and for associated control. This study investigated temporal variations in the absorption and translocation capacities of pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in polluted soils during the plant growth cycle under greenhouse and open-field cultivation modes. Results showed high root metal(loid) bioconcentration factors and root-to-shoot translocation factors for Cd (0.25 and 1.44, respectively) and Zn (0.26 and 1.01), but low values for As (0.06 and 0.88) and Pb (0.06 and 0.87). The Cd concentration in the aerial edible parts peaked during the early slow growth period, whereas other heavy metal(loid)s peaked during the later stable maturity period. Root bioconcentration and root-to-shoot translocation factors did not significantly differ between cultivation modes. However, greenhouse cultivation exhibited lower average Cd and Zn concentrations in the edible parts and cumulative uptake amounts of most metal(loid)s than open-field cultivation during the typical harvest period spanning days 60 and 90. Short-term transitioning from open-field to greenhouse cultivation may reduce health risks associated with heavy metal(loid) intake via pak choi consumption. These findings facilitate sustainable agricultural practices and food safety management.

Abstract:Biochar is widely used in agriculture to efficiently solve the problem of sludge. In this study, sludge-based biochar (referred to as BC1, BC2, and BC3) was prepared by mixing sludge with FeCl 3 , Na 2 SiO 3 , and Ca (H 2 PO 4 ) 2 , respectively. Then, it was mixed with fresh soil to plant Brassica chinensis L. The analysis of the effects of the three biochar types showed that all of them were beneficial to the growth of Brassica chinensis L. We added the biochar to the soil and found that the concentration of heavy metals did not exceed the recommended threshold. Additionally, the aboveground part of Brassica chinensis L. met the standard requirement for food safety (GB 2761–2017). Notably, BC3 stood out with the best effect on the growth of Brassica chinensis L. and resulted in the improvement of the physical and chemical properties of soil such as ammonium nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium (BC3 was followed by BC2 and BC1). BC3 could efficiently inhibit the migration of heavy metals, thereby reducing the overall heavy metal pollution level and ameliorating the soil nutrients. BC3 could increase the organic carbon by 258.92%, available phosphorus by 234.45%, and available potassium by 37.12% compared with the CK group. The THQ and TTHQ estimates of Brassica chinensis L. were lower than one, indicating that the health risk of heavy metal intake was not prominent. Additionally, the application of the proposed biochar could reduce the form of F1 (acid extracted state) and increase the form of F4 (residue state) in soil. Overall, we conclude that the application of the proposed biochar can promote the root absorption of heavy metals and inhibit the migration of heavy metals.

Abstract:Heavy metal (HM) pollution has become a serious issue globally, endangering both human health and agricultural production, particularly in acidic soils with high HM bioavailability. Although the exact mechanism of either rice husk biochar (RH) or salicylic acid (SA) in lowering HM levels in soil and plants has been discovered, their combined effect remains unknown. Therefore, this study mitigated HM stress and reduced their content in the Chinese mustard plants by adding different levels of RH alone or with foliar application of SA to produce safe foods. RH was added to the soil at 0%, 2.5%, and 5% either alone or with foliar application of SA, which was applied to the plant leaves at concentrations of 0, 0.5, and 1 mM in triplicate for each. The highest reductions of the DTPA-extractable metals were recorded in a high level of RH (5%), which were 32.16%, 43.22%, 49.72%, and 29.54% for Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn, respectively, compared with the control. Additionally, the combined effect of RH and SA at a high rate demonstrated the highest increase in fresh (19-fold) and dry (threefold) shoot, and the greatest relative reductions in shoot Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn concentrations were 74.72%, 69.19%, 54.16%, and 53.86%, respectively, compared with the control. Furthermore, the combination significantly improved all studied antioxidant enzymes and increased chlorophyll a and b and carotenoid contents by approximately 300%, 400%, and 250%, respectively, compared with the untreated soil. H 2 O 2 , malondialdehyde, and proline contents were significantly stimulated to the highest levels in the HM-contaminated soil, whereas that amended with RH alone or with sprayed SA significantly reduced their content. Adding RH with sprayed SA can remediate HM-contaminated soil and reduce the concentrations of potentially toxic metals in plants.
