Abstract:Guided waves can propagate from flat plates to curved structures and carry structural health information. In this paper, an ultrasonic guided wave inspection method is proposed for detecting damages in curved parts made of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRPs), such as hat-stringer-stiffened panel. By collecting full wavefield information, we obtain the standing wave information formed by the interaction between guided waves and damage. The interaction mechanism between guided waves and damage is simulated through finite element simulation, and the wavefield curvature imaging algorithm is used to generate a damage image in the curved area. Furthermore, a specimen with delamination damages is fabricated, and full wavefield information is collected through a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). We then use the proposed imaging algorithm to detect delamination damages of different sizes. The experimental results were consistent with the simulation results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method. Notably, the technology combines the advantages of guided waves and SLDV, which can obtain full wavefield information without contact, including damage-related characteristics. This work provides a convenient and comprehensive method for collecting wavefield information on complex curved CFRP parts for structural health monitoring, which would significantly improve quality control for CFRP components in various fields.

Abstract:Tanks are essential facilities for oil and chemical storage and transportation. As indispensable parts, the tank floors have stringent nondestructive testing requirements owing to their severe operating conditions. In this article, a synthetic aperture focusing technology method is proposed for the circumferential scanning of the tank floor from the edge outside the tank using ultrasonic guided waves. The zeroth shear horizontal (SH0) mode is selected as an ideal candidate for plate inspection, and the magnetostrictive sandwich transducer (MST) is designed and manufactured for the generation and receiving of the SH0 mode. Based on the exploding reflector model (ERM), the relationships between guided wave fields at different radii of polar coordinates are derived in the frequency domain. The defect spot is focused when the sound field is calculated at the radius of the defect. Numerical and experimental validations are performed for the defect inspection in an iron plate. The angular bandwidth of the defect spot is used as an index for the angular resolution. The results of the proposed method show significant improvement compared to those obtained by the B-scan method, and it is found to be superior to the conventional method—named delay and sum (DAS)—in both angular resolution and calculation efficiency.

Abstract:We demonstrate the nondestructive evaluation by means of directional ultrasound emitted from a planar metasurface. The ultrasound metasurface is designed to generate the collimated and directional ultrasound efficiently in a planar configuration, which is endowed with the full-2 pi-range phase manipulation ability and high transmittance up to 80%. We employ the directional emission based on the ultrasound metasurface to innovate the traditional nondestructive evaluation methods, benefited from the freely controlled directivity and the superior fitness to sample surface of the planar metasurface. Merits of this innovative application are evidenced by the remarkable accuracy (higher than 98%) in the thickness evaluation, and precise detection (accuracy higher than 96%) of the special defect inside the V-shaped workpiece which is intractable to be inspected conventionally. The implementation of the metasurface-based directional ultrasound emission in the nondestructive evaluation bears the advantages of high coupling efficiency, superior fitness, high accuracy, and applicability to special defect, providing new solutions to the challenges in conventional defect detection and promotes the development in the nondestructive evaluation applications.

Abstract:The detection of internal defects within railway tracks stands as a critical aspect of ensuring transport security, given its potential to precipitate severe accidents. Phased array ultrasonic testing methods have gained extensive usage in rail inspection owing to their remarkable precision and expansive coverage. Traditional ultrasonic inspection techniques typically require either a fixed relative position between the transducer and the specimens or a gentle movement of the transducer to beamform. However, the unavoidable vibration stemming from the vehicle-rail coupled interactions often results in time -variant media, significantly impacting the beamforming. This paper presents a refined wavenumber-domain plane wave imaging technique tailored to enable real-time dynamic imaging, specifically accommodating the vertical vibrational movement of the transducer. Real-time calculation of the transmission focal law is achieved by numerical fitting. The wavenumber-domain technique is utilized to realize realtime accurately reconstructed images. The efficacy of the proposed method is assessed through simulations and experiments performed on a convex cylindrical specimen and a rail head sample, respectively. It can be seen that this approach can achieve a frame rate of 83.3 fps with a pipeline architecture in this study, demonstrating the capability to reconstruct images in vibrating environments, such as during the high-speed inspection of railways.

Abstract:A reliable non-destructive testing technique that enables effective detection and quantification of defects within safety-critical curved structures is highly demanded both in manufacture and service. Conventional Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods usually adopt planar ultrasonic probes and it is preferable to adjust the probe axis direction perpendicular to the curved surface, because both the transmitting and receiving sensitivities in the probe axis direction are the highest. This paper proposes a new UT method using a hemispherical-omnidirectional ultrasonic probe. This probe has an omnidirectional directivity pattern and can cover curved surfaces with normal incident ultrasounds at different scan positions without the necessity of adjusting the probe attitude and position to follow the curved surface profiles. A surface reconstruction algorithm is firstly proposed to estimate curved surface profiles, which is based on a fast-imaging algorithm for ultra-wideband radar called the Shape Estimation Algorithm based on the Boundary scattering transform and Extraction of Directly scattered waves (SEABED). This method only uses surface reflection echoes, and thus can inspect curved structures without knowing the surface profiles a prior. Further, the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) is implemented to generate a focused image of internal defects by performing delay-and-sum beamforming on defect echoes based on the reconstructed surface profile. The proposed UT method is eventually experimentally verified on a curved plexiglass specimen with 29.4 mm surface curvature radius containing three ϕ 3.5 mm Side Drilled Holes (SDHs) at different depths. Results show that compared with the planar ultrasonic probe, the reconstructed surface profile via SEABED is much wider and accurate with a relative error ≤ 0.47%. All SDHs are not only clearly positioned with relative errors ≤ 7.43%, but also can be accurately quantified from the curvature radius of SDH indications in the SAFT images with relative errors ≤ 8.60%. This work proves that the UT method based on the hemispherical-omnidirectional ultrasonic probe can emerge as a promising technique to inspect curved structures with high efficiency and accuracy, which has great potential in practical applications.

Abstract:Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is of great significance to ensure the working of equipment in aerospace, petrochemical, railway, and other fields. Transverse wave ultrasonic testing is an important method for the detection of internal defects in solids due to its advantages of weak attenuation of vibration mode, low sound speed, and high spatial resolution. However, due to the vibration characteristics of piezoelectric wafers, conventional ultrasonic transducers cannot directly transmit and receive transverse waves and need to refract the transverse waves with the help of oblique incidence, and due to the particularity of oblique incidence, it is necessary to consider the refraction effect and slope detection simultaneously, which increases the burden of ultrasonic imaging reconstruction calculation. Therefore, a wavenumber-domain fast reconstruction technique using ultrasonic scanning for transverse waves is proposed. The method is built based on classical synthetic aperture focusing technology (SAFT) by integrating the coordinate transformation in wavenumber domain and transverse wave wavefield extrapolation for the application of oblique incidence transverse wave imaging. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can build excellent detection results when detecting transverse holes, cracks, and hemispherical flat-bottom holes with refraction angles from 20 degrees to 60 degrees. Compared with the time-domain synthetic aperture focusing technique, the computational efficiency of this method is improved by at least 100 times without losing the reconstruction accuracy.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Ultrasonic-guided waves full wavefield scanning technology can realize non-destructive testing with non-contact. The damage detection method based on ultrasonic-guided waves' full wavefield data is widely used in thin-walled plate structures. The defect imaging method based on full wavefield data faces the challenge of simultaneously obtaining the defect contour and thickness direction information. Based on the ultrasonic-guided waves full wavefield scanning detection technology, this paper proposes a multi-time Lamb waves space wavenumber imaging method. In this method, the analytic signal of Lamb wavefield at each moment is constructed by Hilbert transform, and the phase unwrapping is carried out by amplitude sorting and multi-clustering method. Then the wavenumber information is obtained by calculating the phase gradient. The wavenumber at different times of each measurement point is arranged in descending order, and the median wavenumber is extracted as the wavenumber at each measurement point. Based on the dispersion relationship of the tested specimen, the quantitative detection of the plate thickness in the detection area is realized. This method is first applied to the simulation model. Then it is applied to the defect imaging and quantitative detection of aluminum plates with rectangular groove defects and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) plates with delamination defects. In simulation and experiment, the local wavenumber imaging method, the frequency domain instantaneous wavenumber imaging method, and the multi-time Lamb waves space wavenumber imaging method are used for defect imaging and quantification. The imaging results are compared and analyzed. The result shows that the multi-time Lamb waves space wavenumber imaging method can restore the morphology of groove defects in aluminum plates and delamination defects in CFRP plates, and accurately estimate the depth of groove defects and the location of delamination defects.

Abstract:Laser ultrasonic scanning in combination with contact or non-contact sensors provides new paradigms in structural health management (SHM) and non-destructive in-process quality control (IPQC) for large composite structures. Wave propagation imaging technology based on laser ultrasonic scanning and fixed-point sensing shows remarkable advantages, such as minimal need for embedded sensors in SHM, minimum invasive defect visualization in IPQC and general capabilities of curved and complex target inspection, and temporal reference-free inspection. However, as with other SHM methods and non-destructive evaluation based on ultrasound, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a prevalent issue in real structural applications, especially with non-contact thin-composite sensing or with thick and heterogeneous composites. This study proposes a high-speed repeat scanning technique for laser ultrasonic propagation imaging (UPI) technology, which is realized with the scanning speed of 1 kHz of a Q-switched continuous wave laser, and precise control of the laser beam pulses for identical point scanning. As a result, the technique enables the achievement of significant improvement in the SNR to inspect real-world composite structures. The proposed technique provides enhanced results for impact damage detection in a 2 mm thick wing box made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, despite the low sensitivity of non-contact laser ultrasonic sensing. A field-applicable pure laser UPI system has been developed using a laser Doppler vibrometer as the non-contact ultrasonic sensor. The proposed technique enables the visualization of the disbond defect in a 15 mm thick wind blade specimen made of glass-fiber-reinforced plastic, despite the high dissipation of ultrasound in the thick composite.

Abstract:<p>Guided wavefields in composite structures carry a wealth of information about wavefield anomalies from damage–wave interactions. Although such anomalies can be used for damage detection, they are easily masked by incident waves from actuators and reflected waves from structural boundaries. This research presents a concept of guided wavefield curvature for the detection of structural damage. Wavefield curvature analysis is able to highlight the amplitudes of local anomalies in the wavefield signals associated with damage. A wavefield curvature imaging algorithm is developed for visualizing invisible damage in composite structures. The algorithm is first verified by detecting delamination in a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate and then applied for detection of debonding in a honeycomb sandwich panel. In the experiments, wavefields are generated by a PZT transducer and are then registered by a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer. The experimental results accord well with the actual locations, sizes, and shapes of the delamination and debonding, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for the detection of invisible damage in composite structures.</p>

Ultrasonic Phased Array Imaging Approach Using Omni-Directional Velocity Correction for Quantitative Evaluation of Delamination in Composite Structure

Abstract:The ultrasonic detectability of buried defects within composite materials is dependent on the anisotropy of the composite material by which the propagation property of acoustic wave in each direction is variably affected. In this study, the characteristics of acoustic waves propagating in different directions for composite materials are explored based on the full matrix capture (FMC) data using an ultrasonic phased array. The elastic constant of multidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate is first derived based on the genetic algorithm. The characteristics of transmitted and reflected waves in higher angles are predicted by implementing the Christoffel equation, and the focal law used in post-processing of FMC data can be optimized accordingly. The imaging results of the total focusing method (TFM) using the improved focal law are compared with the results of the conventional TFM. The results suggest that the optimized TFM can effectively characterize the defect by reducing the background noise. Furthermore, since it is impractical to theoretically correct angle-dependent velocity for in situ inspection, a linear extrapolation method based on the experimentally measurable velocity at low angles is proposed to estimate the velocity profile at higher angles. The imaging results using the fast extrapolated velocity profile is then compared with the theoretical, and it has been demonstrated that while the difference between the images using the theoretical focal law and the linearly extrapolated one is barely visible, the later one is overwhelmingly advantageous to be realiszd for engineering practices.

Abstract:This paper presented an ultrasonic technique for simultaneous determination of the complete set of acoustical and geometrical properties of a layer embedded between two known materials using point-focus ultrasonic spectroscopy, which provides a high lateral resolution. The theoretical model of the two-dimensional spectrum Rt (θ, ω) of the layer is calculated as a function of six parameters of longitudinal and transverse velocities cl, ct, attenuation αl, αt, density ρ and thickness h, which fully determined the layer properties. The experimental spectrum Re (θ, ω) can be measured by V(z, t) technique. A two-step algorithm is presented to decompose the searching process of parameters from one six-dimensional to two three dimensional spaces. The sensitivity of the two-dimensional spectrum to individual properties and its stability against experimental noise are studied. The full set properties of a 250 μm thick stainless steel plate immersed in water are determined. The proposed technique used a point focus transducer, which makes the set-up simple and reliable. It allows measurement of the local properties of the layer and enables precision material characterization.

Abstract:The blood levels of parent tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) drugs in 11 cases of suicide are reviewed. Values ranged from 0.11 mg% to 2.4 mg% with a mean of 0.80 mg%, which is consistant with the recent literature. The data suggest that in autopsy cases where TCA tissue levels or TCA metabolite concentrations could not be, or were not determined, blood levels of parent TCA drugs exceeding 0.1 mg% may be regarded confidently as the cause of death when no other cause is present.

Abstract:Ultrasonic phased array testing is commonly employed for inspecting curved structures. Conventional plane wave imaging techniques, based on delay-and-sum in the time-domain, offer high image quality and inspection accuracy but suffer from low frame rates due to their high computational complexity. In this work, an efficient wavenumber-domain imaging method that combines non-stationary wavefield extrapolation and f-k migration is proposed for curved structure inspection. Special emission focal laws are designed to generate a sequence of steered plane waves through the curved interface. The raw data is then extrapolated to the top boundary of the region of interest, followed by f-k migration to reconstruct images with high time efficiency. Simulation and experimental evaluations demonstrate a time reduction by a factor of up to 32.24 compared to conventional time-domain plane wave image reconstruction with equivalent image quality, highlighting its potential for monitoring flaws in real-time.
Lamb wave dispersion and anisotropy profiling of composite plates via non-contact air-coupled and laser ultrasound

Abstract:Conventional ultrasound inspection has been a standard non-destructive testing method for providing an in-service evaluation and noninvasive means of probing the interior of a structure. In particular, measurement of the propagation characteristics of Lamb waves allows inspection of plates that are typical components in aerospace industry. A rapid, complete non-contact hybrid approach for excitation and detection of Lamb waves is presented and applied for non-destructive evaluation of composites. An air-coupled transducer (ACT) excites ultrasonic waves on the surface of a composite plate, generating different propagating Lamb wave modes and a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) is used to measure the out-of-plane velocity of the plate. This technology, based on direct waveform imaging, focuses on measuring dispersive curves for A0 mode in a composite laminate and its anisotropy. A two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT) is applied to out-of-plane velocity data captured experimentally using LDV to go from the time-spatial domain to frequency-wavenumber domain. The result is a 2D array of amplitudes at discrete frequencies and wavenumbers for A0 mode in a given propagation direction along the composite. The peak values of the curve are then used to construct frequency wavenumber and phase velocity dispersion curves, which are also obtained directly using Snell’s law and the incident angle of the excited ultrasonic waves. A high resolution and strong correlation between numerical and experimental results are observed for dispersive curves with Snell’s law method in comparison to 2D-FFT method. Dispersion curves as well as velocity curves for the composite plate along different directions of wave propagation are measured. The visual read-out of the dispersion curves at different propagation directions as well as the phase velocity curves provide profiling and measurements of the composite anisotropy. The results proved a high sensitivity of the air-coupled and laser ultrasound technique in non-contact characterization of Lamb wave dispersion and material anisotropy of composite plates using simple Snell’s law method.
Application of wavefield imaging to characterize scattering from artificial and impact damage in composite laminate panels

Abstract:Composite materials used for aerospace applications are highly susceptible to impacts, which can result in barely visible delaminations. Reliable and fast detection of such damage is needed before structural failures occur. One approach is to use ultrasonic guided waves generated from a sparse array consisting of permanently mounted or embedded transducers for performing structural health monitoring. This array can detect introduction of damage after baseline subtraction, and also provide localization and characterization information via the minimum variance imaging algorithm. Imaging performance can vary considerably depending upon where damage is located with respect to the array; however, prior work has shown that knowledge of expected scattering can improve imaging consistency for artificial damage at various locations. In this study, anisotropic material attenuation and wave speed are estimated as a function of propagation angle using wavefield data recorded along radial lines at multiple angles with respect to an omnidirectional guided wave source. Additionally, full wavefield data are recorded before and after the introduction of artificial and impact damage so that wavefield baseline subtraction may be applied. 3-D filtering techniques are then used to reduce noise and isolate scattered waves. A model for estimating scattering of a circular defect is developed and scattering estimates for both artificial and impact damage are presented and compared.
Finite element modelling strategy for determining directivity of thermoelastically generated laser ultrasound

Abstract:Laser ultrasound (LU) is a contactless and couplant-free remote non-destructive (NDE) technique, which uses lasers for ultrasonic generation and detection rather than conventional piezoelectric transducers. For a transducer, an important characteristic is the directivity , the angle-dependent amplitude of the ultrasonic waves generated in the material. In the non-destructive thermoelastic regime, LU source has been widely modelled as a surface force dipole. However, the directivity of LU in more complex material, where there is an increasing demand for NDE, such as carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), is yet to be understood. In the current paper, a finite element (FE) modelling methodology to obtain the directivity of LU in complex material is presented. The method is applied to a conductive isotropic material (aluminium, Al) for validation against an existing analytical solution and then applied to a heterogeneous anisotropic material (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, CFRP). To get the directivity of a specific wave mode, the signal for that mode needs to be resolved in time from other modes at all angles. This is challenging for shear (S) waves in a small model domain due to the head wave, so a technique for suppressing the head wave is shown. The multi-physics model solves for thermal expansion, which models the laser source as a surface heat flux for the Al case, and a buried heat source for the CFRP case, according to where the energy is deposited in the material. The same ultrasound generation pattern can be obtained by using a suitable pure elastodynamic loading, which is shown to be a surface force dipole as per the validation case for Al, and a buried quadrupole for the CFRP case. The modelled directivities are scaled and fitted to experimental measurements using maximum likelihood , and the goodness of fit is discussed. For the Al case, the S wave is preferred over the longitudinal (L) wave for inspection due to greater signal amplitude. For the CFRP case, the quasi-longitudinal (qL) wave in CFRP shows a maximum amplitude directly below the source, and has a greater amplitude than the quasi-shear (qS) wave, suggesting a better choice for inspection.

Abstract:Ultrasonic Lamb waves have been proved useful for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) due to their abilities to propagate a long distance with less energy loss as well as their high sensitivity to small defects on the surface or inside the structure. However, there are still many challenging tasks for Lamb wave based NDE due to the complexity involved with Lamb waves propagation and the complexity caused by coupling layer used in traditional contact-type transducers. This paper established a fully non-contact Lamb wave NDE system by using a non-contact air-coupled transducer (ACT) which can eliminate the need for couplant/adhesive and actuate pure fundamental A0 mode Lamb wave; and a non-contact scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV) for sensing which can provide high spatial resolution wavefield data. Through ACT, pure A0 mode was actuated at selected ACT incident angle based on Snell’s law. By SLDV sensing, multi-dimensional wavefields for one-dimensional or two-dimensional wave propagation were obtained and further used for Lamb waves’ characterization analysis. A specimen with a through-thickness crack was manufactured and adopted to evaluate the inspection capability of the ACT-SLDV system. Waves with normal incident and aligned incident w.r.t the longitudinal dimension of the crack were investigated, and our results showed that cracks were detected successfully in both cases. Moreover, crack lengths can be quantitatively evaluated for both situations with 10% error.

Abstract:Lightweight, carbon fibre reinforced composites are often employed for the manufacture of aerospace components due to their good strength to weight ratio. However, due to poor interlaminar strength, composite components are prone to barely visible impact damage, caused by low velocity impacts, during aircraft operation. Guided-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques, using a network of distributed sensors, is an important Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) tool for the detection and localization of in-service impact damage in composite structures. However, the material anisotropy of composite laminates influences guided wave propagation and scattering. These anisotropic effects, if unaccounted for, could lead to inaccurate localization of damage, and potential regions of the structure where guided waves cannot propagate with sufficient amplitude, reducing damage sensitivity. Defect characterization can be improved by considering the scattering characteristics of various damage types for the sparse array signal processing. Guided wave scattering (A0 Lamb wave mode) was investigated around an artificial insert delamination in a quasi-isotropic CFRP panel. Permanent magnets, mounted on an undamaged region of the plate, were also used as scattering targets and compared to the delamination case. Full 3D Finite Element (FE) simulations were performed for both the delamination and magnet cases and compared to wavefield data obtained from non-contact laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) measurements. Individual ply layers were modelled using unidirectional composite material properties to accurately capture the anisotropy effects. Good agreement was found between the experimental measurements and simulations. Scattered guided wave amplitudes around each damage type show strong directional dependency with energy focusing along the fiber directions of the outer ply layers of the laminate. Distinct scattering behavior was observed for each damage type. Implications of anisotropy and angular scattering on sparse array SHM of different defect types are discussed.

Abstract:Curved-surface components (CSC) are ubiquitous in engineering practice such as automobiles, aerospace and pipelines. However, they are prone to void and crack defects which greatly degenerate mechanical properties and are badly in need of effective detection. Ultrasonic full-matrix imaging is a conspicuous method in nondestructive testing. However, the research on high-quality imaging of CSC is still limited. In this paper, an ultrasonic imaging method based on frequency-domain reverse-time migration (FD-RTM) is developed for CSC at the first attempt, unrestricted to the surface shape of components. Through discretization of the acoustic wave equation in the frequency domain, the wavefields of all excitations are extrapolated together to obtain the source and received wavefields at each frequency. After implementation of the imaging conditions, the high-quality image of the defects is obtained. The efficaciousness of the method was examined with the numerical simulation and laboratory experiment, in both of which the void and V-shaped crack defects in copper and aluminum CSCs were imaged in high quality. Results have proven that FD-RTM has obvious advantages over the existing imaging methods for CSC. Therefore, the proposed method shows great potential in defect detection for CSC in various fields.
