Abstract:Importance: Dichotomous dermatologic depictions of heroes and villains in movies have been used since the silent film age. Objective: To evaluate the hero-villain skin dichotomy in film by (1) identifying dermatologic findings of the all-time top 10 American film villains, (2) comparing these dermatologic findings to the all-time top 10 American film heroes quantitatively and qualitatively, and (3) analyzing dermatologic portrayals of film villains in depth. Design, setting, and participants: In this cross-sectional study, dermatologic findings for film heroes and villains in mainstream media were identified and compared quantitatively using a χ2 test with α < .05, as well as qualitatively. The all-time top 10 American film villains and heroes were obtained from the American Film Institute 100 Greatest Heroes and Villains List. Main outcomes and measures: Primary outcomes include identification and frequencies of dermatologic findings of the top 10 film villains and of the top 10 film heroes. Results: Six (60%) of the all-time top 10 American film villains have dermatologic findings, including cosmetically significant alopecia (30%), periorbital hyperpigmentation (30%), deep rhytides on the face (20%), multiple facial scars (20%), verruca vulgaris on the face (20%), and rhinophyma (10%). The top 10 villains have a higher incidence of significant dermatologic findings than the top 10 heroes (60% vs 0%; P = .03). Conclusions and relevance: Dermatologic findings of the all-time top 10 American villains are used in film to highlight the dichotomy of good and evil, which may foster a tendency toward prejudice in our society directed at those with skin disease.

Abstract:Abstract Our retrospective study explores skin conditions and diverse skin phenotypes in the depiction of protagonists vs. antagonists, within popular global animations. Animations throughout media, across continents, can influence younger audiences and societal perspectives. These inevitably impact self-perception and a patient’s personal experience of skin disease, for example acne portrayed in a cartoon villain. Shan Yu, Disney’s villain in Mulan, is portrayed with darker skin, a distinct beard and scars. The choice to associate skin colour and disorders with negatively portrayed characters drives cognitive assignment of a character’s morality, which thus may drive societal prejudice. We collected data assessing skin colour and dermatological characteristics of heroes or villains, in animations worldwide. The top 10 most popular animations for each major continent were identified and analysed from rankings obtained from the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) website. Animations were collected from Asia, Australasia, Africa, Europe, North America and South America. Major blocs of Asia included the top 10 most popular animations from India, China, Japan, the Middle East and South East Asia. Skin tones were captured and put into four categories: grey-hued, pallor, darker than ‘normal’ phenotype and fairer than ‘normal’ phenotype. For example, a character is classified as darker than ‘normal’ if their skin tone is darker than the majority skin colour for that region. While grey-hued and pale complexions are consistently utilized to portray popular villains, there was a global pattern of using contrasting skin colour, depending on the continent. In Europe and Australia, villains with darker skin colours were more common. Acne, warts and scarring were commonly portrayed in villains. In contrast, African villains with distinct skin tone were fairer, whereas their animated African heroes had a skin tone representative of the majority population. Interestingly, in India, more than half of villains were portrayed with darker skin. Sociocultural and colonial-rooted influence of skin tone in Indian society could explain why over half of its popular villains are darker in skin tone. The availability of skin whitening products aligns with postcolonial bias, suggesting that lighter skin symbolizes power, status and beauty. Skin colour and skin disorders in character portrayal may push the notion of ‘good guys’ vs. ‘bad guys’, thus driving prejudice against particular ethnic groups. Colonial media narratives ‘othering’ ethnic groups exemplify how discrimination and hatred may develop. We propose that animators carefully consider the negative impact of their work, including perpetuation of stigma in society, prior to release into the public domain.

Detecting protagonists and antagonists in the voice quality of American cartoon characters: a quantitative LTAS-based analysis

Abstract:The voices of heroes and villains in cartoons contribute to their uniqueness and helps shape how we perceive them. However, not much research has looked at the acoustic properties of character voices and the possible contributions these have to cartoon character archetypes. We present a quantitative examination of how voice quality distinguishes between characters based on their alignment as either protagonists or antagonists, performing Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on the Long-term Average Spectra (LTAS) of concatenated passages of the speech of various characters obtained from four different animated cartoons. We then assessed if the categories of "protagonists" and "antagonists" (determined via an a priori classification) could be distinguished using a classification algorithm, and if so, what acoustic characteristics could help distinguish the two categories. The overall results support the idea that protagonists and antagonists can be distinguished by their voice qualities. Support Vector Machine (SVM) analysis yielded an average classification accuracy of 96% across the cartoons. Visualisation of the spectral traits constituting the difference did not yield consistent results but reveals a low-versus-high frequency energy dominance pattern segregating antagonists and protagonists. Future studies can look into how other variables might be confounded with voice quality in distinguishing between these categories.
Analysis of Nasal Morphology in Skeletal Class I and Skeletal Class II Malocclusion: An Observational Study

Abstract:Background and objectives The nose is one of the major focuses of face attractiveness. Through careful evaluation of the soft tissue drape, a treatment plan can be designed to enhance a patient's facial attractiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate and assess the variations in nasal morphology among class I malocclusion and class II horizontal and class II vertical malocclusion. Material and method Lateral cephalograms of 27 patients were taken and consisted of three groups: skeletal class I malocclusion, class II horizontal malocclusion, and class II vertical malocclusion. The various linear and angular measurements specific to nose were assessed. Results and conclusion In class II and class I malocclusion, the nose is observed to be straight and convex, respectively. Additionally, compared to class II horizontal malocclusion, it is more convex in class II vertical malocclusion. Vertical growers or high-angle cases are more likely to have a nose with an increased inclination toward nasal dorsum convexity than horizontal growers or low-angle instances.
Examining the Motivations of Walt Disney Heroes and Villains and Their Association with Audience Appeal and Future Film Production

Abstract:Guided by the model of intuitive-motivation and exemplars, we content analyzed the population of N = 734 Walt Disney Studio film synopses to determine whether Disney's heroes and villains were motivated by altruistic or egoistic values, and if these values were associated with films' audience ratings, box-office performance, or the future production of similar value-laden films. Results revealed that heroes were most likely to be motivated by altruism, villains were most likely to be motivated by egoism, and films' emphasis on altruism was associated with more positive audience ratings and greater box-office earnings. No clear relationship between motivations and future film production emerged. We discuss how the present results can inform future work investigating the relationship between audiences and Disney content.

Abstract:Actors make modifications to their face, voice, and body to match standard gestural conceptions of the fictional characters they are portraying during stage performances. However, the gestural manifestations of acting have not been quantified experimentally, least of all in group-level analyses. To quantify the facial correlates of character portrayal in professional actors for the first time, we had 24 actors portray a contrastive series of nine stock characters (e.g., king, bully, lover) that were organised according to a predictive scheme based on the two statistically independent personality dimensions of assertiveness (i.e., the tendency to satisfy personal concerns) and cooperativeness (i.e., the tendency to satisfy others’ concerns). We used three-dimensional motion capture to examine changes in facial dimensions, with an emphasis on the relative expansion/contraction of four facial segments related to the brow, eyebrows, lips, and jaw, respectively. The results demonstrated that expansions in both upper- and lower-facial segments were related to increases in the levels of character cooperativeness, but not assertiveness. These findings demonstrate that actors reliably manipulate their facial features in a contrastive manner to differentiate characters based on their underlying personality traits.

Abstract:Abstract Faces judged as stereotypically Black are perceived negatively relative to less stereotypical faces. In this experiment, artificial faces were constructed to examine the effects of nose width, lip fullness, and skin reflectance, as well as to study the relations among perceived dominance, threat, and Black stereotypicality. Using a multilevel structural equation model to isolate contributions of the facial features and the participant demographics, results showed that stereotypicality was related to wide nose, darker reflectance, and to a lesser extent full lips; threat was associated with wide nose, thin lips, and low reflectance; dominance was mainly related to nose width. Facial features explained variance among faces, suggesting that face-type bias in this sample was related to specific face features rather than particular characteristics of the participant. People’s perceptions of relations across these traits may underpin some of the sociocultural disparities in treatment of certain individuals by the legal system.

Abstract:Abstract Due to its central location, the nose plays a prominent role in facial aesthetics. As tastes have shifted and techniques have advanced, the accepted “ideal” appearance and proportions of the nose have evolved over time. By assessing the aesthetics of the nasal dorsum through the use of lines and angles, one can more precisely elucidate a goal for the patient's postoperative nasal shape, which should, in turn, guide the surgeon to execute specific operative maneuvers needed to achieve that contour. In assessing the aesthetics of the nasal dorsum, practitioners calculate and observe aspects such as the paired dorsal aesthetic lines, the nasofrontal angle, and the nasofacial angle. There is also additional consideration given to nasal tip position as this must fit harmoniously with the shape of the dorsum. In contrast to the established aesthetic lines and angles, using nasal geometric polygons for the aesthetic evaluation and development of operative goals in rhinoplasty has recently been described in the literature. Constructed ideals, in the form of proportions, lines, and angles, should be used with caution, as there are many factors to consider in the aesthetic analysis of the nasal dorsum, including ethnic differences, and subjective and changing views of beauty.

Abstract:Introduction: To objectively quantify nasal characteristics of patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism and to evaluate the association between nasal asymmetry and dentofacial abnormalities. Methods: Ninety adult patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism were included. Images were captured during pretreatment us-ing 3-dimensional stereophotogrammetry. A total of 7160 uniformly sampled quasi-landmarks were automatically identified on each facial image to establish correspondence using a template mapping technique. Fifteen commonly used anatomic landmarks were automatically located on each image through barycentric to Cartesian coordinate conversion. Nasal characteristics and asymmetry were quantified by anthropometric linear distances, angular measurements, and surface-based analysis. The degree of the nasal, chin, and periorbital asymmetry in a patient was scored using a root-mean-squared error between the left and right sides. The correlations among these regional asymmetries were evaluated. Results: The nasal tip was significantly shifted to the deviated side of the chin, and the nostrils were asymmetrical. The location and degree of nasal asymmetry varied among patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism. The level of nasal asymmetry was significantly and positively correlated with chin and periorbital asymmetry. Conclusions: Nasal asymmetry is present in asymmetric mandibular prognathism patients. Furthermore, it is positively associated with periorbital deviation and chin deviation. Individualized nasal asymmetry evaluation should be performed, and clinicians should inform patients about preexisting nasal asymmetry.
Disfigured Faces Depicted in Modern Visual Media

Abstract:According to the German sociologist Georg Simmel, of all the parts of the body, the face has the highest degree of inner unity. This study aimed to analyze the depictions of disfigured faces in modern visual media (movie films). The keywords "disfigured-face" and "disfigured-face character" were searched on Google. Based on that information, 57 films were searched on IMDB and TMDB, as movie databases. Six films where the IMDB and TMDB overlapped were omitted, and 6 films not directly related to the concept of "disfigured face" were excluded. All animated movies were replaced with the original movies. Then, 45 valid films were finally selected, and 48 characters with disfigured faces were analyzed. Among 48 disfigured faces, 26 were in male characters and 22 were in female characters. Among the 48 disfigured faces, 30 (62.5%) did not improve and 18 (37.5%) improved. Characters who underwent facial deformity correction surgery were 56 times more likely to improve than those who did not. Characters whose facial disfiguration improved were 7.85 times more likely to have a happy ending than those who did not. Among the methods that the characters with disfigured faces used in attempts to overcome their deformity, surgery had the highest success rate. Although surgery is not perfect, the reality is that there are no other alternatives. The results of our film analysis study, which showed plastic surgery can improve the face and improve quality of life, can be seen as realistic and statistically significant.
Depictions of Strabismus in Children's Animated Films

Strabismus is commonly depicted in animated films marketed to children, potentially influencing the perception of strabismus by young impressionable audiences.METHODSWe reviewed all animated films released by Walt Disney Animation Studios from 1989 to 2022 and all films released by Pixar, DreamWorks, and Studio Ghibli before 2023 and identified all characters with strabismus. Five raters each independently performed a character trait analysis of all characters with strabismus, and a sample proportion test was used for statistical comparison of these traits.RESULTSOne hundred twenty five movies met inclusion criteria. We identified 46 characters with strabismus, with at least 1 character identified in 33 of the 125 films. These characters were more likely to be portrayed as unintelligent (30%) than intelligent (2%), villains (15%) than heroes (4%), and followers (41%) than leaders (7%). Twenty-six (58%) were either mute or did not speak, 24% were portrayed as frightening, 35% had other physical deformities, and 35% were clumsy. Inter-rater reliability testing demonstrated substantial agreement (Kappa 0.61–0.80) or moderate agreement (κ 0.41–0.60) among raters for most of the character traits.CONCLUSIONSCharacters with strabismus are common in animated films, where they are significantly more likely to be portrayed negatively than positively. These films are marketed to children, and their negative depictions of strabismus likely exacerbate the social stigma faced by children with strabismus.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Nasal morphology is a significant aspect of facial anatomy and is often used for forensic identification and aesthetic surgery. This study aims to compare nasal dimensions based on sex, facial index (FI), and nasal index (NI) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D modeling. Methods: To observe differences in nasal dimensions by sex and analyze the relationships between facial shapes (FI) and nasal forms (NI), a total of 100 participants (50 males, 50 females) in their 20s were selected from Dankook University Dental Hospital. CBCT scans were performed, and 3D models were created using Mimics software (version 22.0). The measurement items included the alaria distance between (AL), the distance between N (nasion) and SN (subnasale), the distance between N (nasion) and PRN (pronasale), and the distance between SN (subnasale) and PRN (pronasale). A T-test was used for the sex-based analysis of the nasal dimensions, and the facial index- and nasal index-based nasal dimensions were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with Scherffe's post hoc test. Additionally, all the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (version 23.0). Results: The results indicated that males generally have larger nasal dimensions than females. Additionally, the mesoprosopic facial type (round face) showed the largest nasal dimensions in the FI classification, while the platyrrhine nasal type (broad and short nose) exhibited the largest dimensions in the NI classification. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the nasal size varies significantly with sex, facial shape, and nasal form. The findings can contribute to forensic identification and provide valuable data for clinical practices in facial reconstruction and nasal surgery.

Abstract:Background: The jawline greatly influences facial shape and contributes to facial dimorphism. Analysis of lower facial shape and sexual dimorphic differences in contemporary attractive white faces can advance the goals of lower facial aesthetics and facial gender–affirming surgery (FGAS). Methods: Full-face, front-view photos of 47 white female and 21 white male celebrities were included from a list generated using GQ magazine’s Highest Paid Models issue, People Magazine’s Beautiful issue (1991–2022), and celebrities featured on lifestyle websites. Facial landmarks were detected through a facial analysis program using Vision framework and MATLAB. After converting pixel distances to absolute distances, lower face measurements were compared between males and females. Results: The mean lower facial height was 6.08 cm in females and 7.00 cm in males ( P value<0.001). The mean bigonial width was 11.21 cm in females and 12.30 cm in males ( P value<0.001). The ratio of facial height to lower facial height was 2.98 in females and 2.76 in males ( P value<0.001), signifying that symmetry in facial thirds is more prevalent in attractive female faces, while a longer lower face is more common in attractive male faces. The greatest differences in female and male facial contours were at gonial angles and chin. Conclusions: Analysis of contemporary white celebrity faces demonstrated significantly wider and longer lower facial measurements in males. The overall contour of the female lower face was more tapered at the gonial angles and chin compared to males. These results are important when planning lower facial rejuvenation or FGAS, as lower face size and proportions influence perceived gender and attractiveness.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchimal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Despite the enormous progress made in the field of diagnostics, most often diagnosis is made during the explorative laparotomy and postoperative immunohystochemical analysis of specimen. The surgical treatment is often indicated, although scarce preoperative diagnosis causes intraoperative dilemma concerning the level of radicality. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this paper we have analyzed two patients with gastric GIST. The first patient was 59 years old male, with preoperatively diagnosed colonic cancer. Intraoperatively besides the transverse colon cancer, we found intramural gastric tumor. This patient underwent subtotal gastrectomy and subtotal colectomy. The immunohystochemical analysis of gastric tumor proves benign GIST. The second patient was 50 year old male presented with repeated upper GI bleeding. The endoscopic ultrasound showed intramural tumor of the anterior gastric wall, with a visible blood vessel bleeding during endoscopy. After the resuscitation, we performed subtotal gastrectomy. The immunohystochemical analysis proved malignant GIST. DISCUSSION In the cases with inadequate preoperative diagnoses, the level of resection procedure is based on the size of tumor and the presence of necrosis and bleeding inside the tumor. Tumors larger than 5 cm in diameter with signs of necrosis and bleeding are parameters of malignant nature of GIST, therefore demanding a radical surgical treatment. CONCLUSION The surgical resection is a treatment of choice for gastrointestinal stromal tumors. It has been shown that adequate surgical resection correlates with high 5-years survival rates for patients with gastric GIST.
We Don't Choose Whom We Love: Predictors for Romantic Attraction to Villains

Abstract:Introduction: Why are women (not) romantically attracted to dark personalities or villains, which might be a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization? In the current study, it is opted to investigate how adult attachment, maladaptive personality traits, and acceptance of couple violence in women predict romantic attraction to heroic/villainous characters using structural equation modeling (SEM). Method: First, a pilot study was conducted in 122 heterosexual women (aged 16-25) to select male TV characters. This resulted in the selection of six villains and 10 heroes for the main study, in which 194 other heterosexual women (aged 16-25) were asked to rate the pictures of TV characters through an online questionnaire. This was combined with self-report measures of maladaptive personality traits, acceptance of couple violence, and adult attachment. These variables were entered into a SEM model to assess model fit. Results: Overall, women rated heroes higher on physical appearance (pilot study) and romantic attraction (main study) compared to villains. We found different direct effects of avoidant (negative) and anxious (positive) attachment styles on romantic attraction to heroes. Moreover, maladaptive personality traits fully mediated the positive effect of avoidant attachment style on romantic attraction to villains. Discussion: Despite the limitations of the study design (e.g., low N, low notoriety of the TV characters), this study emphasizes that women are generally more romantically attracted to heroes (vs. villains). Besides, there are different predictors of romantic attraction to heroes and villains, which requires further investigation, especially in the context of IPV.

Abstract:Visual signs can be differentiated into denotative and connotative messages, where denotative messages form the perceptual foundation of an image, and connotative messages engage with a deeper, culturally cognisant layer, imbued with subjective interpretations and aesthetic significations. This study embarks on a qualitative textual analysis with the main aim to elucidate the connotation and denotation of visual significations in two pivotal Chinese animated films, Monkey King: Hero is Back and Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child. Guided by Roland Barthes’ Semiotic theory and Chen’s study, the research delves into the connotative and denotative meanings embodied in the films’ visual elements. The focus is primarily on facial design, physical appearance, clothing, and props, providing a comparative analysis of how these elements function within each film’s narrative framework. The key findings reveal that the visual significations in both films are not merely aesthetic choices but serve as substantial cultural and narrative tools. The characters’ faces, physical appearances, clothing, and props are intricately tied to themes like Chinese opera masks, subversive reconstructions, natural elements, and intangible cultural heritage. These visual cues play a crucial role in reinforcing cultural heritage, spurring innovation, invoking nature reverence, and bolstering national sentiment within film storytelling. Contrasting with previous research that predominantly focused on characters, this study expands the analytical scope to include props, recognising their significance as visual signs in animation. By expanding the analysis to include props alongside characters and visual elements into the analysis, this research offers a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Chinese mythological animations. It enriches the academic discourse on animation studies, demonstrating how visual elements can profoundly influence narrative interpretation and cultural representation. The research affirms the cultural and narrative potency of visual signification in animation and underscores the dynamic interplay between tradition and innovation within the realm of Chinese animated films.

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study is to analyze the nasal morphological characteristics in Chinese adult, of Han nationality, by the measurements in sagittal plan and the proportionality between nose and facial structures, in order to provide aesthetic references for rhinoplasty, and individual surgical planning. Methods During 2017 November to December,258 healthy Han Youth volunteers were included. Three-dimensional (3D) models of the facial characteristic information were collected using Artec 3D scanner, by standardized procedures. The nasal and facial distances and angulations were measured, based on predesigned facial landmarks. Thereafter, the proportions of above measurements were calculated. Results There was no significant difference between genders in absolute prominence. As for relative prominence, male nose is more prominent, resulted in a more stereoscopic facial profile. The nasal basal plane of both male and female, was more anterior than the infraorbital points, with 7％ of the absolute degree of the infraorbital points. The range of the angle between the nasal basal plane and coronal plane was 2-4 degrees. Conclusions This study sets a database for the external nasal characteristics of the young adult in Chinese Han nationality, which could provide quantitative references for preoperative evaluation and individually surgical planning.
Electroencephalographic episodes of 1 to 7 per second rhythmic waves following hypothermic hypoxia in developing chicks.

Abstract:Developing chicks between the day of hatching and three weeks after hatching were subjected to hypothermia of 20°C followed by nitrogenous hypoxia until breathing ceased and the cerebral electroencephalogram was reduced to zero potential. Resuscitation was started 15 minutes later; 86% of the chicks resumed spontaneous breathing. Eighty percent of the resuscitated chicks showed electroencephalographic episodes usually lasting 1 to 3 minutes and consisting of conspicuously rhythmic blunt spike-like waves of large amplitude and complex patterns with frequencies in the range of 1 to 7 waves per second until the episode was terminated at almost zero potential. Monopolar techique using the comb as the reference electrode indicated that the EEG episodes were either predominantly bilateral or unilateral, with both gradual and abrupt changes in amplitude, frequency, and site of origin. During episodes the chicks were either motionless or showed tremors of eyelids, limbs, trunk, with occasional staring and chirping. During progressive recovery, as episodes approached, large amplitude waves increased in amplitude and frequency, and changed from domes to blunt spikes. Similar slow waves apeared during episodes and continued during recovery eventually culminating in normal EEG patterns of sleep. Statistically the younger chicks showed briefer and fewer episodes, with the lowest maximum frequency. On the day following experimentation 86% of the resuscitated chicks were alive and showed normal EEG patterns and behavior: death was not limited to chicks having episodes.
