Abstract:A systematic investigation of the effects of silane coatings on steel fibre–mortar interfacial bond properties was conducted, combining pullout tests, analytical solutions, and meso-scale FE simulations. Nine silane coatings were tested, and their effects were evaluated by 30 single fibre pullout tests. They were found to increase the peak force and energy consumption up to 5.75 times and 2.48 times, respectively. Closed-form analytical solutions for pullout load, displacement, and interfacial stress distribution during the whole pullout process were derived based on a tri-linear bond-slip model, whose parameters were calibrated against the pullout tests. Finally, the calibrated bond-slip models were used to simulate the pullout tests and complex failure of multi-fibre specimens in mesoscale finite element models. Such an approach of combining pullout tests, analytical solutions, and mesoscale modelling provides a reliable way to investigate the effects of fibre–mortar interfacial properties on the mechanical behaviour of steel fibre reinforced concrete members in terms of structural strength, stiffness, ductility, and failure mechanisms.

Abstract:Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a new generation of cementitious composites that exhibit excellent compressive strength and durability. However, the poor bonding between steel fiber and UHPC matrix usually results in insufficient tensile properties and limits its application. Here, the surface of steel fibers is modified with silane coupling agent (SCA) to enhance fiber/matrix bond. The macroscale workability, flexural and tensile properties of UHPC are investigated. It has been found that SCA modifications contribute to strength enhancement and cracking behavior improvement of UHPC, and its energy absorption capacity increases 13.8%. The microscale characterizations of fiber/matrix interface are conducted through scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The mechanisms behind the enhancement have been revealed and classified into mechanical friction, chemical bonding and physical adhesion. This work provides a green and effective approach for promoting tensile properties and an in-depth understanding of SCA modification mechanisms.

Abstract:The fiber reinforcement efficiency of carbon fiber reinforced cement matrix composites (CFRCM) is limited by the low permeability of mortar to internal filaments in the fibers, leading to premature failure of the composites due to low bond strength. In this paper, three kinds of nano-silica materials were used to improve the bond properties of carbon fiber bundles to cement-based matrix by coating and electrophoretic deposition. It is found that different methods have different positive or negative effects on the improvement of bond properties, and the effects are different under different embedded lengths. The modification principle is due to the high impregnation of nano silica particles on the fibers and the reaction of volcanic ash of the particles, which promotes the formation of calcium silicate hydrate gel inside the fibers. Relevant research needs further exploration.
Enhancement of strength and ductility of cement-based composites by incorporating silica nanoparticle coated polyvinylalcohol fibers

Abstract:Addition of fibers can give brittle material extrinsic toughness, mainly because of the bridging effects. However, such behavior is highly dependent on the interfacial interaction between fiber and brittle matrix. In order to optimize both the strength and ductility of cement, which is the most extensively used brittle material on this planet, here we propose a new strategy to control the interfacial property in the fiber-cement matrix. Silica-coated polyvinylalcohol fibers were successfully synthesized by a sol-gel method with controlled silica thickness, and then incorporated into cement paste. The interaction between fibers and cement matrix was significantly enhanced due to the greatly increased hydrophilicity and roughness of silica-coated fibers, as well as the pozzolanic reactivity of silica nanoparticles. Therefore, the interfacial region between fiber and cement becomes much more compact, promoting the fiber-cement interaction both physically and chemically. As such, the crack propagation would be severely constrained, resulting in the strength and ductility of cement significantly increased. We showed that the ultimate flexural strength and ultimate deflection of the cement composites reinforced by silica-coated polyvinylalcohol fibers increase by 187% and 980% with respect to pristine cement, and increase by 28% and 74% compared to cement reinforced by polyvinylalcohol fibers without silica, at the fiber content of 1 wt.%. This study illustrates the potential and effectiveness of interfacial design to overcome the mechanical dilemma of strength and ductility increase simultaneously, and open a new dimension to further improve the mechanical properties of cement.

Abstract:The reinforcement of steel fibers on cementitious composites is mainly influenced by the bonding between the fiber and matrix. The steel fibers and matrix bonding depend on the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). A major cause of ITZ formation is microbleeding, i.e., the flow of free water around steel fibers at the early stage of bleeding may cause the redistribution of water and cement particles around the fibers, leading to the formation of ITZs. The fiber orientation in the matrix affects the flow of water and further influences the microstructure of the ITZ around the steel fiber and the bonding properties. This study proposes a theoretical model based on fluid mechanics to investigate the influence of fiber orientation on cement-water suspension migration around steel fibers. The microstructure of the ITZ around the steel fiber is then estimated based on the Powers model according to the water-cement ratio distribution. Finally, the interrelationships among the fiber orientation, ITZ porosity and bond strength are established by curve fitting. The results indicate that since free water with small particles flows past the steel fiber by flowing past circular (or elliptical) cylinders, a difference in the ITZ microstructures at the upper and lower surfaces of the steel fiber arises. As the inclined angle of the fiber increases, the upper surface porosity and the average porosity of the ITZ around the steel fiber decrease, leading to an increase in the fiber-matrix bond strength.

Abstract:Using Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) to replace normal strength concrete (NSC) can greatly reduce the weight of steel-concrete composite structures. However, the bonding interfaces between steel and UHPC in composite structures are prone to brittle failure, and the introduction of ductile fibers can effectively enhance the interfacial toughness. In this study, helical fibers and steel wire mesh fibers were stably embedded in UHPC and epoxy matrix to prepare the steel-UHPC bonding specimen. The interfacial shear properties were studied based on a modified direct shear test method, and the effects of fiber size, fiber number, and fiber direction were considered. Meanwhile, the interfacial properties of bonding specimens with two types of ductile fibers were compared with those of epoxy direct bonding interface and quartz sand particle embedded interface. The results indicated that the toughness enhancement of steel wire mesh fiber on the bonding interface of steel-UHPC composite structure is the best among all interfaces, and its maximum fracture energy Gτ is 25.5 times that of epoxy direct bonding interface. Meanwhile, the toughening mechanism of steel wire mesh fiber on steel-UHPC interface is highly related to its arrangement direction. The failure of interface began with the shear fracture of steel wire mesh fiber and ended in the failure of epoxy matrix, when the steel wire mesh was arranged transversely. However, only tensile fracture of steel wire mesh fiber occurred, and the failure of the epoxy matrix was not observed when the steel wire mesh was longitudinally arranged. Finally, the shear capacity calculated by the proposed model based on two toughening mechanisms showed good agreements with the experimental results. The finite element analysis confirmed the feasibility of fiber bridging to enhance the toughness of bonding interface in the UHPC-OSD system.

The interfacial characteristic of steel fiber reinforced polymer cement composites

Abstract:Three kinds of polymers, polymethyl acrylate emulsion (PAE), styrene acrylate copolymer emulsion (SA), polyvinyl formal solution (PVFO) are chosen to modify the properties of steel fiber reinforced cement composites (SFRCC). The macro-properties have been modified by polymers such as bending strength toughness of the composites. In the meantime, the interfacial bonding strength between fiber and cement base has been remarkably enhanced by polymers. IR spectra of SFRCC shows that the active functional groups of polymers react with cement or aggregate. DSC curves prove the results because of the increase of the exothermic peak value when polymers are doped. The interfacial layer between steel fiber and cement base is strengthened by the way of the chemical reaction between polymers and cement base. And the SFRCC with good strength toughness and "interpenetrating network" are formed.

Abstract:In this article, we review current literature on coffee, both regular and decaffeinated, and its potential effects in humans. Moderate coffee consumption is believed to have no persistent effect on blood pressure. Large intake of coffee may increase total cholesterol levels; boiled coffee increases cholesterol levels more than filtered coffee. Consuming more than four cups per day may be associated with increased risk of acute myocardial infarction. There appears to be an association between urinary bladder cancer and coffee consumption. No association was found between ingestion of coffee and incidence of duodenal ulcer and ulcerative colitis. Increased coffee consumption by pregnant women appears to decrease fetal birth weight. Fetal heart rate, respiration, and both maternal and fetal anemia are increased with coffee consumption but coffee has not been shown to be teratogenic. Coffee consumption appears to pose no particular threat in most people if consumed in moderation. Naturally decaffeinated, filter-brewed coffee further diminishes its potential harmful effects.

Abstract:Steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composite (SBFRCC) is a potential reinforce-ment and repair material for engineering structures with fire risk due to its excellent mechanical properties exposed to ambient and high temperatures. However, the bonding properties between SBFRCC and existing concrete are still unclear, especially at high temperatures. To fill this gap, the bonding properties between SBFRCC and existing concrete at high temperatures were investigated based on two situations by using the slant shear and splitting tensile tests. First, the existing concrete was heated at high temperatures and then bonded with SBFRCC and strengthening concrete to form combined systems, respectively. The effects of the interface roughness, high temperature duration, and post-fire-curing on their bonding properties were investigated. Second, the existing concrete was bonded with SBFRCC and then heated at high temperatures, and the effects of fly ash substation rates on the bonding properties were studied. Besides, the backscattered-electron (BSE) was used to observe the interface between the exiting concrete and SBFRCC exposed to various temperatures. Results show that the first bonded and then heated specimens are slide-failed and separated at the bonding interface from room tem-perature to 600 degrees C, while the damage is generated within the existing concrete at 800 degrees C. SBFRCC has better high temperature resistance than the existing concrete. The slant shear and splitting tensile strengths between PC-A and SBFRCC are 9%-33.3% higher than that of PC-A and strengthening concrete at all temperatures. The appropriate roughness at the interface by pol-ishing can significantly improve the bonding properties between the existing concrete and SBFRCC. The bonding strength is recovered by more than 18.2% and 29.8% after the post-fire curing of 28 and 90 d, respectively. The increase of fly ash substitution rates has a certain contribution to the bonding properties above 600 degrees C.

Abstract:Advances in Structural Engineering, Ahead of Print. This study aims to investigate the influence of different surface treatments, including smooth interface, rough interface, anchor bolt connection, and epoxy bonding agent, on the shear resistance of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC)-concrete interface through bi-surface shear testing. The experimental results show that the interfacial shear strength between ECC and concrete is significantly enhanced by the implementation of the three interface treatment methods, as opposed to the smooth interface. Among these methods, the anchor bolt connection exhibits the greatest improvement in interfacial bonding performance. Notably, cohesive failure is observed in the anchor bolt connection method, while the other three methods result in adhesive failure, with only the anchor bolt connection method displaying ductile failure behavior. Following a comprehensive review of relevant studies and the outcomes of this experiment, three distinct interface bonding mechanisms were identified and the forces contributing to the bond were analyzed. Results indicated that the interfacial bond strength is notably influenced by the surface roughness. These research findings substantiate the viability of utilizing the anchor bolt connection method, particularly in applications where ductility requirements in the repair layer are essential for structural integrity.

Abstract:Steel fiber textile, which is composed of steel fibers and glass fibers, has a support layer impregnated with hot melt adhesive (HMA). During long-term service, the bonding force between the steel fiber/HMA system interfaces is poor. In order to improve the bond strength and durability of the interface, this paper introduced sandblasting, acid-etching, and phosphating treatments on the surface of the steel fibers. Also, the effects of these three pretreatment methods on the bond strength of the steel fiber/HMA interface were investigated. The results indicate that the interfacial bond strength of composites made from steel fibers is improved via surface treatment. Under a hydrothermal and simulated concrete pore solution environment, the durability of the steel fiber/HMA interface after sandblasting and acid-etching pretreatment is not as good as that after phosphating pretreatment. The mechanical properties of the phosphating/HMA composite were maintained at 4.56 and 2.24 times compared to those of the untreated/HMA composite, respectively. This is because the pinning effect formed by the phosphating film on the surface of steel fibers at the interface of steel fiber/HMA can serve as a physical barrier against corrosion, preventing the invasion of chloride ions and water vapor and improving the durability of the interface.

Abstract:Carbon fiber mesh reinforced cement-based composites (CMCCs) have received extensive attention in the field of engineering repair and structural reinforcement due to their outstanding properties such as two-way force, rust prevention, high specific strength, and low base surface requirements. However, the development of this material has been slowed down to some extent due to the poor interfacial bonding between the carbon fiber mesh and the cement matrix. In this paper, a novel fabrication strategy was proposed in which the carbon fiber mesh was modified with epoxy resin and silane coupling agent (SCA) to increase its surface chemical activity. Meanwhile, the hydroxymethyl cellulose (HMC) was also filled into the concrete matrix to improve the mechanical strength of the matrix as well as the load transfer behaviors between the mortar and carbon fiber (CF) mesh. The potential to employ SCA and HMC was evaluated for the making of CMCCs via the above methods. The results showed that the longitudinal shear strength of composites with SCA and SCA&HMC increased by 26.6% and 56.1% compared to those of CF with epoxy resin (EP) reinforced composites, respectively. The flexural strength of composite with SCA&HMC increases by 147.6% compared to I-(F) without CF. The novel II-HCM&CF/EP-SCA composites with excellent performance are promised to be applied in practical uses.
Nanoscale Insights into the Mechanical Behavior of Interfacial Composite Structures between Calcium Silicate Hydrate/Calcium Hydroxide and Silica

Abstract:The failure of the interfacial transition zone has been identified as the primary cause of damage and deterioration in cement-based materials. To further understand the interfacial failure mechanism, interfacial composite structures between the main hydration products of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), and silica (SiO2) were constructed while considering their anisotropy. Afterwards, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our results showed that the interfacial zones (IZs) of interfacial composite structures tended to have relatively lower densities than those of the bulk, and the anisotropy of the hydration products had almost no effect on the IZ being a low-density zone. Interfacial composite structures with different configurations exhibited diverse nanomechanical behaviors in terms of their ultimate strength, stress–strain relationship and fracture evaluation. A higher strain rate contributed to a higher ultimate strength and a more prolonged decline in the residual strength. In the interfacial composite structures, both CSH and Ca(OH)2 exhibited ruptures of the Ca-O bond as the primary atomic pair during the tensile process. The plastic damage characteristics of the interfacial composite structures during the tensile process were assessed by analyzing the normalized number of broken Ca-O bonds, which also aligned with the atomic chain break characteristics evident in the per-atom stress map.

An Approach to Effectively Improve the Interfacial Bonding of Paste–limestone by Incorporating Different Nanomaterials

Abstract:The properties of concrete with nanomaterials are notably influenced by the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). However, the different modification mechanisms of different nanomaterials on ITZ are yet to be fully understood. Therefore, this study investigated the modification effect of nanomaterials by determining the bonding strength, nanoindentation value of the ITZ, as well as the layered mineral composition and microstructure of the interface. The results show that the bonding strength of specimens improved by nanomaterials was significantly increased, due to the ‘phase regulation effect’ and ‘deagglomeration effect’ of nanomaterials on the hydration products. However, the modification effect of different nanomaterials exhibited obvious difference. The effect of nano silica was the best compared with the other nanomaterials, resulted from the improvement of nanoindentation value and reduction of ITZ thickness. In addition, agglomeration of nano calcium carbonate and nano graphene oxide on the interface, inert nucleation of nano titanium dioxide resulted in the modest increase of interfacial bonding strength. This study proposes an approach to effectively improve ITZ properties, which may promote the further research and application of nanomaterials in the cement and concrete industries.
A Molecular Dynamics Study on the Structure, Interfaces, Mechanical Properties, and Mechanisms of a Calcium Silicate Hydrate/2D-Silica Nanocomposite

Abstract:The incorporation of nano-reinforcements is believed to be a promising method to create high performance nanocomposites, which are largely dependent on the interfacial connections. In this work, the newly emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, 2D-silica is intentionally intercalated into the interlayer defective sites of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which is the primary hydration product of ordinary portland cements. The reactive molecular simulation results indicate the nano-reinforcement can strongly interact with the inorganic matrix to form a high-ductility nanocomposite. The uniaxial tensile loading tests show the plastic stage of the C-S-H is considerably enhanced due to the intercalation of 2D-silica, which removes the intrinsic brittleness of cement-based materials at the nano-scale. It is observed that the dangling atoms at the edge of 2D-silica can react with non-bridging oxygen atoms of C-S-H, forming Si-O-Si bonds at interfaces. Those covalent bonds transform Q1 and Q2 in the C-S-H into high connectivity Q3 and Q4 species, which increases the integrity of the matrix and its resistance to crack propagation. During the tensile process, the elongation and breakage of those high-strength covalent bonds needs higher tensile stress and consumes higher energy, which leads to a strong plasticity and higher toughness. This work may shed new lights on the interaction mechanisms between 2D-materials and inorganic hosts, and provide solutions to modifying the brittleness of concrete.

Abstract:The incorporation of steel fibers in concrete imparts strain-hardening characteristics, significantly elevating the tensile toughness of the concrete mixture. However, this enhancement often comes at the expense of reduced workability and strength, posing challenges in achieving optimal densification in practical engineering applications. Moreover, the improvement of the performance of steel fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC) hinges on the establishment of interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between steel fibers and the concrete paste. It has been established that the introduction of fly ash and silica fume to concrete mixtures can increase fluidity and strength. Consequently, this study investigates the impact of fly ash and silica fume on the performance enhancement and workability of SFRC mixtures, scrutinizing both macroscopic and microscopic aspects. Two sets of high-flowable steel fiber-reinforced concretes (HF-SFRC) incorporating silica fume or fly ash were prepared and subjected to testing. The assessment covered mechanical properties, including compressive strength, compressive toughness, and flexural toughness, along with the microstructure. The microstructure provides evidence that fly ash and silica fume reduced the voids in the concrete matrix to different degrees and that the fully hydrated dense matrix contributed to reinforcing the bond between steel fibers and the cement matrix. The synergistic effect among fly ash or silica fume, steel fibers, and cement in the mixture resulted in enhanced flowability and improved mechanical properties in HF-SFRC.

Abstract:<p>The inherent brittle fracture characteristics of cement limit the application of cement-based materials in fields such as building repair, thin-layer coating, and the preparation of deformable components. The blending of polymers alleviates this characteristic to a certain extent, but the flexibility and toughness still need to be further improved. We prepared a multi-scale toughener (MST) by applying a hydrothermal method to improve the dispersion performance of the nano-silica (NS) aqueous while constructing the multi-component silane molecular cages (SMC) by using 3-glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The mechanical properties and micromorphology of the waterborne epoxy-cement repair material (WECM) with MST were characterized. The zeta potential analysis, laser particle size analysis (LPSA), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and molecular dynamics simulation were used to characterize and explain the basic questions that persist in the theory of particle dispersibility and hydrolysis-condensation effects within the MST system. The results show that the hydrothermal treatment is more efficient than mechanical dispersion in dispersing performance while surging the GPTMS' reaction rate by ∼1000 times as well as the transformation from monomers to the caged multimers. The ductility of MST modified WECM radically increased by 300%–400%. The microscopic morphology reveals that the MST effectively induced multi-slit cracking (cracks of ∼5 μm in length and ∼1 μm in width, the aspect ratio of 6: 1 ∼ 4: 1) effects with a noticeable rugged morphology observed. The obtained results include parameters to improve the mechanical properties of composites with MST and this simple and effective organic-inorganic nano toughener has a good application prospect in the field of polymer modified cement-based materials.</p>

Abstract:Interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between cement matrix and porous aggregates plays an important role in affecting overall behavior of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) due to mechanical interlocking effect. However, existing characterization techniques could not assess interfacial bond performance of LWAC in a three-dimensional and non-destructive way. The present study proposed a novel technique involving both in-situ X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and digital volume correlation (DVC) to quantitatively assess interfacial bond behavior between cement pastes and porous aggregates. In the test program, samples with various interfacial conditions were loaded to generate necessary displacement differences among different constituents. Volumetric deformations traced by XCT were transformed into volumetric strain components through DVC computation. Furthermore, cement-aggregate interactions were evaluated by analysis of XCT results. Eventually, strain profiles were used to characterize mechanical bond properties of the interfaces. Through the investigations, it was found that not all the penetrated cement paste could contribute to interfacial bond and that the proposed method could evaluate the effective area providing mechanical interlocking. The test results also showed that overall concrete strength could not represent the strength of ITZ.

Abstract:Expanded polystyrene (EPS) concrete is a new type of green building material. To make it more widely used, in this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and silane coupling agent (SCA) were used to toughen it. The synergistic enhancement mechanism of SCA on PVA/cement and EPS/cement interfaces was systematically investigated from macro mechanical properties, microstructure characteristics, and nano interface interaction. Firstly, based on the mechanical property test, it was found that the introduction of SCA and PVA fibers can significantly improve the flexural strength of EPS composite concrete at 7 and 28 days, followed by the compressive strength. Secondly, the cut pieces of corresponding composite concrete were observed by electron microscope. It was found that SCA made the two interfaces more closely, and its bonding effect at the micro interface was described. Finally, molecular dynamics (MD) was used to model PVA/C-S-H and EPS/C-S-H with or without SCA. Then, the local structure, dynamic performance, and binding energy of the interface were calculated and analyzed. The analysis results showed that SCA reduced the interface effect and enhanced the interface hydrogen bonding, van der Waals interaction, Ca-H coordination bond and stability. Thus, the interfacial adhesion energy was improved, and the weak interfacial bonding between organic polymers (PVA, EPS) and inorganic silicates (C-S-H) was enhanced.
