Abstract:The use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure the thermal behavior of individual components and electrolyte/electrode combinations is common. However, here we focus on DSC tests on an anode, cathode, and electrolyte (ACE) component combination over a temperature range that includes many of the phase transitions and key reactions (i.e., to 500°C) that contribute to thermal runaway. This method can help quantify the complex reaction network in a full cell, thereby informing potential safety issues. Here, we used DSC heat flow data from a solid-state Li0.43CoO2+C+PVDF | LLZO | Li metal ACE sample and its components to quantify key factors affecting results. We focused on three areas: (1) ACE sample preparation and assembly in DSC pans, (2) DSC measurement parameters, and (3) heat flow analysis. Key points include the choice of component ratios (e.g., commercially relevant N:P capacity ratio), the importance of conductive carbon and binder, type of pan used, DSC ramp rate, and integration method used when dealing with broad and overlapping exothermic peaks. This work deepens the scientific basis and best practices for obtaining heat flow data from ACE samples for early-stage evaluation of solid-state and beyond battery safety.

Abstract:Obtaining information about burning characteristics and flame structures by analyzing experimental data is an important issue for understanding combustion processes and pursuing combustion modeling approaches. It has been shown that Raman/Rayleigh measurements of major species and temperature can be used to approximate the local heat release rate and the chemical explosive mode, and that these results are sufficiently accurate for a qualitative assessment of the relative importance of different heat release zones within the same overall flame structure in laminar and mildly turbulent partially premixed flames [1], [2]. The present study uses data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) to extend and quantify the understanding of the approximation method with respect to premixed and stratified-premixed flames with significant turbulence–chemistry interaction (high Karlovitz number). The accuracy of the approximation procedure is assessed as previously applied, using just major species and temperature, as well as with the OH radical included as an additional experimentally accessible species. The accuracy of the local chemical explosive mode and the local heat release rate results from the approximation are significantly improved with OH included, yielding quantitative agreement with the DNS results. Further, a global sensitivity analysis is applied to identify the sensitivity of the heat release rate and chemical explosive mode to experimental uncertainties imprinted upon the DNS data prior to the approximation procedure.

Abstract:Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a highly efficient tool to characterize the thermal properties and to investigate thermal reactions of materials owing to its advantages of simplicity and universality as well as the well-defined measurement results with a clear physical meaning. In recent years, the tremendous development of DSC technique has greatly extended the measurement range for polymer characterization, facilitating the further research on thermodynamics and kinetics of physical transitions in polymer materials. Temperature-modulated DSC (TMDSC), a remarkable advance in DSC technique in 1990s, introduces scanning rate perturbation into the traditional linear heating rate so that the overall heat flux could be separated into reversible and non-reversible signals and furthermore, the reversing heat capacity could be measured in the quasi-isothermal process. Fast scanning chip-calorimetry (FSC) is a new progress of DSC technique in recent years, which adopts a miniature chip made of silicon nitride thin films to replace the traditional crucible as the sample holder and temperature controller, thus achieving ultra-fast heating and cooling rates for the measurement with sample mass on micro- and nanogram scale, which makes it possible to analyze the structural reorganization phenomena occurring frequently during temperature scanning and to simulate the actual condition of polymer processing. This review starts with the fundamentals of thermal analysis, followed with a sequential introduction of DSC, TMDSC and FSC by covering their histories, principles, experimental skills as well as their practical examples of polymer characterization. In the end, the prospects of the development and application of DSC are highlighted. We hope this survey would help the readers to gain a deeper understanding of the commonly used DSC technique and encourages them to expand further applications of DSC techniques in polymer characterization.

Abstract:Despite the widespread utilization of Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), concerns regarding safety during operation persist owing to accidents and potential risks of fires and explosions. To comprehend the thermal dynamics that underlie severe LIB incidents, calorimetry tests have been prevalently employed for over three decades to examine the exothermic/endothermic behavior, reaction kinetics, and thermal interactions among LIB materials. There exists a substantial volume of calorimetry test results on various LIB electrodes, electrolytes, and other components. However, this data showcases low consistency, yielding an unreliable database that obstructs a thorough understanding of LIB thermal behavior. In this research, a comparative analysis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results from materials utilized in the most commercialized LIB systems is conducted. The analysis unveils notable discrepancies in DSC data amassed by different researchers, identifies five predominant causes of data inconsistency, proposes a standardized DSC operational procedure, and generates a set of self-consistent data. Subsequently, an intrinsic safety spectrum is delineated and compared with X-ray diffraction (XRD) outcomes to elucidate the correlation between the crystal lattice structure and the thermal behavior of the material. This work aids in the formation of a comparative DSC database, utilizing the vast but inconsistent literature data. Moreover, it clarifies the linkage between the material structure and thermal behavior, facilitating data-driven thermal analysis of LIBs.

Abstract:Apart from human-error, lack of awareness in handling analytical tools and models avert process thermal hazards, misinterpretation of the exothermic dataset of hazardous chemicals have led to numerous catastrophic incidents in the past. The heating mechanism during the runaway reaction is unclear and important to understand for designing safer reactors. The aim of this study was to analyze thermokinetic parameters using nonisothermal calorimetric studies including differential scanning calorimetry and isothermal methods including thermal activity monitor III for both reactive groups. Furthermore, overpressure and overtemperature of hazardous materials were assessed using an adiabatic calorimeter, namely vent sizing package 2, enabling the use of alerting equipment for various operations. The pure decomposition behavior of 2,2′-azobis (2-methylbutyronitrile) (AMBN) was analyzed with depictions of the short-term release of high pressure and temperature using an infrared thermal imaging camera. Thermokinetic parameters of AMBN, including apparent activation energy Ea, were assessed. Thermal tests elucidated the potential hazard while handling these compounds and delineated the nature of the decomposition reaction of the n-th order or autocatalytic model. These results suggested that energy released from isothermal reactions and gas chromatography/mass spectrometer for decomposition products of azo and peroxide compounds simultaneously to understand the reaction mechanisms of compounds of interest.

Abstract:It is commonly assumed that the introduction of solid-state electrolytes implies the improved safety of high-energy batteries due to the removal of the combustible organic solvents in present Li-ion cells. However, safety is a multifaceted issue that involves thermal runaway onset temperature, self-heating rates, total generated energy, maximum temperature, gas or other material releases from a cell, thermal runaway prevention mechanisms, etc. 1 In addition, the use of lithium metal anodes (which melt at 180°C) for high energy density cells may introduce previously unconsidered safety issues not faced by Li-ion cells, in which no molten and reactive lithium metal is present during a thermal runaway. Quantitative heat flow data on reaction thermochemistry among solid-state battery cell components can be gathered using differential scanning calorimetry on milligram-scale samples that include the key components of a full cell stack. While a principal exothermic reaction observed in previous DSC work 2 is the formation of Li 2 O from molten Li and O 2 released upon metal oxide cathode decomposition, this work did not include current collectors or carbon and binder, which add further competing reactions such as the oxidation of binder, and lithium/current collector alloying. In addition, the measured heat flows in a DSC test that includes several cell components are critically dependent on the mass ratio of materials present in the cell, for example the electrode capacity ratio. In this talk we present our own DSC measurements on the onset temperatures, total heat release, and rate of heat release for numerous combinations of cell components (e.g., Li metal, solid electrolyte separators, cathode active materials, cathode inactive components) for prospective solid-state batteries. Abstract:Hazardous chemicals often have the characteristics of high-energy and high-risk, and environmental factors have a significant impact on them. Trinitrophloroglucinol, as an essential energetic intermediate, is widely used in the modern military, aerospace, and energy fields. It is the representative substance of aromatic nitro compounds. Due to the unique properties of nitro, it has both an electron absorption conjugation effect and an electron absorption induction effect. These two effects lead to nitro becoming an electron absorption group, giving it high energy. For such dangerous substances containing nitro, it is of far-reaching significance to study the impact of environmental changes on their safety status. To determine the thermal safety performance of these substances in different external environments, different calorimetric devices, including thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, and accelerating rate calorimeter, are used to simulate different storage environments. Combined with calorimetric data, thermokinetic models suitable for trinitrophloroglucinol were established for thermal safety analysis. The results provide some quantitative guidance for the use and storage of aromatic nitro compounds.

Abstract:Phase transition issues in the field of foods and drugs have significantly influenced these industries and consequently attracted the attention of scientists and engineers. The study of thermodynamic parameters such as the glass transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm), crystallization temperature (Tc), enthalpy (H), and heat capacity (Cp) may provide important information that can be used in the development of new products and improvement of those already in the market. The techniques most commonly employed for characterizing phase transitions are thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Among these techniques, DSC is preferred because it allows the detection of transitions in a wide range of temperatures (−90 to 550 °C) and ease in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the transitions. However, the standard DSC still presents some limitations that may reduce the accuracy and precision of measurements. The modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) has overcome some of these issues by employing sinusoidally modulated heating rates, which are used to determine the heat capacity. Another variant of the MDSC is the supercooling MDSC (SMDSC). SMDSC allows the detection of more complex thermal events such as solid–solid (Ts-s) transitions, liquid–liquid (Tl-l) transitions, and vitrification and devitrification temperatures (Tv and Tdv, respectively), which are typically found at the supercooling temperatures (Tco). The main advantage of MDSC relies on the accurate detection of complex transitions and the possibility of distinguishing reversible events (dependent on the heat capacity) from non-reversible events (dependent on kinetics).

Abstract:Sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) is a novel and effective material for sterilization, disinfection, and bleaching. However, the utilization of NaDCC has caused several thermal runaway incidents worldwide, raising attention to exploring its unknown thermal hazards. This paper simulated the different incident conditions to conduct a comparative study on the thermal stability and decomposition of NaDCC using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC). The gaseous products of the thermal decomposition of NaDCC were analyzed by a thermogravimetry-mass spectrometer (TG-MS). Several kinetic methods were used to calculate Ea of the pyrolysis reaction of NaDCC under different conditions. TMRad and self-accelerating decomposition temperature (SADT) were calculated based on the thermodynamic and kinetic analysis. The results of TMRad showed that the adiabatic induction period decreased significantly, and the risk of losing control enlarged with increasing temperatures. Meanwhile, by comparing the SADT of NaDCC under several common packaging materials, the chemical plastic drums should be used for packaging materials of NaDCC. The result clarifies the reason for incidents and provides the fundamentals and valuable data for safe preparation, production, transportation, and storage of NaDCC.

Abstract:Analytical reagents identify and manage metal pollution, a major environmental issue. Regrettably, these compounds' safety concerns, especially when heated, have been neglected. This research examines the thermal hazard of the extremely reactive analytical reagent styphnic acid. Differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and accelerating rate calorimetry examined styphnic acid's thermodynamics. Thermogravimetric analysis showed weight loss reactions starting at 127 °C and peaking at 208 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry showed an endothermic peak at 176 °C. The accelerating rate calorimetry test showed that styphnic acid self-accelerates at 237 °C after 196.5 °C. Kissinger, Ozawa-Flynn-Wall, and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose thermokinetic models calculated apparent activation energy from 131.677 to 155.718 kJ/mol. A nonlinear regression analysis showed that styphnic acid undergoes a two-step autocatalytic reaction during heat degradation. Thermal safety was assessed by measuring time to conversion limit, maximum rate, total energy release, self-accelerating decomposition temperature, and adiabatic temperature rise. Styphnic acid is less stable at higher temperatures and its thermal hazards depend on heating rate. The computed SADT was 109.04 °C, with alarm and control temperatures of 104.04 and 99.04 °C, respectively. The risk matrix analysis based on Tad and TMRad suggests reducing thermal instability. This study on styphnic acid's thermal risks and safe storage and transit during analytical applications is beneficial.

Abstract:Over the past years, both food researchers and food industry have shown an increased interest in finding techniques that can estimate modifications in quality, nutritional, and thermophysical properties of food products during processing and/or storage. For instance, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has attracted the interest of scientific community because only a small amount of sample is needed for analysis. Moreover, it does not require any specific sample preparation, and is a repeatable and reliable method. In addition, DSC methodology needs a short time for experiments compared with other techniques used for the same purpose. At this stage of investigation, there is a need to evaluate the commonly accepted and new emerging DSC applications to establish the optimum conditions of emerging processing. This paper reviews the current and new insights of DSC technique for the estimation of quality, nutritional, and thermophysical properties of food products during conventional and emerging processing and/or subsequent storage. The estimation of different properties in several food matrices after processing and/or storage is also discussed.

Abstract:A simplified self-heating rate equation was developed to simulate the adiabatic thermal hazards of 88mass% cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) in cumene. CHP has been predominantly used in producing phenol and acetone by catalytic cleavage and as initiator in the acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) copolymer polymerization process. In this study, we acquired experimental data, such as the heat of decomposition (ΔHd) and exothermic onset temperature (T0) by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The data were, in turn, used to simulate a runaway reaction and thermal analysis on 88mass% CHP under various scenarios. The thermal safety software (TSS) series was employed to evaluate reaction kinetics, to simulate the runaway excursion of interest and to allow determination of critical conditions or thermal explosion of the tank. The liquid thermal explosion (LTE) model to simulate thermal explosion of CHP is aimed at ensuring safe storage or transportation. The reliability of both model simulations was assessed by experimentally comparing the thermal hazards with DSC. This simplified methodology is a sound, efficient tool for thermal hazards assessment of energetic chemicals.

Abstract:Battery materials with high-energy density and good safety performance have been regarded as the ultimate target for larger-scale applications of lithium-ion batteries in electric transportation and grid energy storage. Thermal safety of high energy density cathode materials has been a hot topic for battery safety research in recent years. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is widely used to investigate thermal reaction characteristics of battery materials, but the results are always affected by multiple variables, e.g., sample pre-processing and testing conditions. The variety of DSC results reported in literature have been perplexing the research community. Herein, the cathode-electrolyte system is chosen to reveal the changes of reaction mechanisms with different electrolyte/cathode ratios, since this system has been widely adopted to characterize thermal stability of cathodes and electrolytes in previous studies. Lithium-rich manganese-based layered oxide cathode and ester-based electrolyte are selected as representative samples. Our results reveal that flooded, sufficient, insufficient, and lean electrolyte conditions may lead to distinct thermal behaviors from probably different reaction routines, which may hold different reference values for battery-level safety analysis. This study also suggests the importance of systematic investigations on test conditions in battery material thermal safety research.

Abstract:Acrylonitrile is an important raw material for the synthesis of polyacrylonitrile. The present study investigates the thermokinetic parameters of acrylonitrile by non-isothermal kinetic equations, using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The interrupt-rescanning method verifies the autocatalytic characteristic of acrylonitrile. The activation energy E-a is calculated by the OzawaFlynnWall method. The pre-exponential factor, reaction order and autocatalytic constant are calculated by the least square method. The thermal hazard of acrylonitrile mixed with different comonomers or Fe+3 is also explored by DSC. From the experimental results, the free-radical cyclization is sensitive to the heating rate of DSC. The ionic cyclization reaction is significantly influenced by the comonomers and Fe+3 could significantly decrease the initial reaction temperature and peak temperature compared with pure acrylonitrile. Based on the reactivity risk method, the relative risk of acrylonitrile with different comonomers or Fe+3 is assessed.

Abstract:Abstract We present an overview for the basic fundamental of thermal analysis, which is applicable for educational purposes, especially for lecturers at the universities, who may refer to the articles as the references to “teach” or to “lecture” to final year project students or young researchers who are working on their postgraduate projects. Description of basic instrumentation [ i.e. differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA)] covers from what we should know about the instrument, calibration, baseline and samples’ signal. We also provide the step-by-step guides for the estimation of the glass transition temperature after DSC as well as examples and exercises are included, which are applicable for teaching activities. Glass transition temperature is an important property for commercial application of a polymeric material, e.g. packaging, automotive, etc. TGA is also highlighted where the analysis gives important thermal degradation information of a material to avoid sample decomposition during the DSC measurement. The step-by-step guides of the estimation of the activation energy after TGA based on Hoffman’s Arrhenius-like relationship are also provided.

Abstract:Shared-memory multiprocessor computers are nowadays ubiquitous and can deliver substantial computing power. However, users are not always able to exploit this computing power because they either lack an in-depth knowledge of parallel computation or the tools they have In this paper, we investigate two new tools for shared-memory multi-threading programming , namely OpenMP and Partitioned Global Address Space, both of which promise to ease the burden of designing and implementing parallel image reconstruction algorithms. With these tools we implemented EM-ML and Separable Surrogate MAP reconstruction programs for PET and compare their performance against the traditional Pthreads multi-threading approach. We show that these new tools can parallelize complicated reconstruction code with the simply addition of a few new language directives, and more importantly, that this can be done incrementally starting from existing sequential code. We measure reconstruction execution time in a 24 core computer for two small animal PET imaging data sets and compute speedup gains.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a method widely used to examine the melting or crystallization profile of cocoa butter and chocolate. The (perceived) ease of use makes the method very appealing not only in academia, but also in the chocolate industry. Our study presents a critical evaluation of the parameters that influence the generated information (i.e., the apparent melting point and specific heat of fusion) on dark chocolates of various cocoa contents and evaluates the suitability of DSC as generic or "universal" analytical method. The tested parameters included sample weight and form, temperature protocol, and heating rate. In general, the melting point of all dark chocolates increased as a function of increasing heating rate. The weight and form of the samples influenced the melting points but not the specific heat of fusion, while the starting temperatures of the thermal analysis did not seem to affect the melting profiles of the chocolates. We observe that a comparison between different studies researching chocolate behavior using DSC is not trivial due to insufficient detail on the procedure followed and conclude that DSC is maybe better suited for inner-study comparisons.</p>
