Abstract:A novel composite nonwoven separator exhibiting high heat resistance, high ionic conductivity and high lithium ion transference number is fabricated by a simple dip -coating and heat treatment method. The thermal stable polyimide (PI) nonwoven matrix is chosen as a mechanical support and contributes to improving the thermal shrinkage of the composite nonwoven separator (abbreviated as IACS). The cross linked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid) PAMPS(Li+) gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), lithium ion sources of a single ion conductor, is introduced into the PI nonwoven matrix and acts as a functional filler. This PAMPS GPE is proved to be able to provide internal short circuit protection, to alleviate liquid electrolyte leakage effectively, to supply more lithium ions dissociating from PAMPS (Li+) by liquid electrolyte solvent, to contribute a more stable interfacial resistance, and thus resulting in an excellent cyclability. More notably, the migration and mobility rate of anions could be hindered by the SO3 group in the PAMPS (Li+) polymer based on electrostatic interaction, giving rise to a very high lithium ion transference number. These fascinating characteristics endow the IACS a great promise for the application in the high power and high safety lithium ion batteries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Highly Ion-Conductive Anion Exchange Membranes with Superior Mechanical Properties Based on Polymeric Ionic Liquid Filled Functionalized Bacterial Cellulose for Alkaline Fuel Cells

Abstract:How to simultaneously improve the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is a key problem facing currently used anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, biomass-based bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as a porous template to make TiO2 localized minerali-zation around the surface of BC nanofibers, and constructed a TiO2-coated BC porous substrate (TiO2@BC) with hierarchical structure. Then, the coated TiO2 nanoparticles was densely grafted by quaternary ammonium groups to obtain high ionic conduction ability. After filling with a polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) with high ion exchange capacity through in situ polymerization and crosslinking, the obtained novel PIL-filled AEM possessed ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 100.5 mS cm -1 at 80 degrees C, which was 72.1% higher than that of the PIL-filled pure BC membrane (only 58.4 mS cm -1). Moreover, by the aid of the synergistic reinforcement effect of TiO2@BC, the membrane exhibited extremely high dry strength of 95.3 MPa and satisfactory wet strength and flexibility. When at fully hydrate state, the membrane with the size of 1 x 4 cm (width x length) can hang a bottle containing 1000 g of water. The single cell equipped with this membrane output the peak power density of 40.2 mW cm -2, showing its great potential as a high-performance biomass-based AEM.(c) 2023 The Authors. Abstract:The bacterial cellulose (BC)/Al2O3 nanofibrous composite membrane as a lithium-ion battery separator has been successfully prepared by coating Al2O3 on the BC nanofibers through a simple in situ thermal decomposition of Al(NO3)3 · 9H2O. Thermal treatment tests show that the BC/Al2O3 composite membrane is thermally stable at a high temperature of 200 °C while great shrinkage is observed for the commercial PP-PE-PP membrane. Moreover, the BC/Al2O3 membrane is evaluated to have large porosity and excellent electrolyte uptake, consequently giving rise to larger ionic conductivity, lower interfacial resistance as well as better electrochemical stability. The half lithium-ion battery assembled with the BC/Al2O3 separator demonstrates large discharge capacity and good cycling performance, suggesting that the BC/Al2O3 membrane can be used as a lithium-ion battery separator.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) lithium-ion batteries separators possess outstanding thermal dimensional stability and electrolyte wettability, but theirs nano diameter and high aspect ratio lead to poor porosity and pore size uniformity of dense BC separators, limiting the Li + transmission in the separators. In this paper, chitosan (CS) with different molecular weight was grafted onto BC (named OBCS), and a high-performance OBCS separator with excellent pore structure and tunable pore size was prepared by simple suction filtration. The spacing and dispersion uniformity of OBCS were improved by the CS grafted on BC surface, thus improving the pore structure and porosity of OBCS separators. The results showed that the obtained OBCS separators not only have excellent physicochemical properties, but also exhibit higher electrochemical performances than the commercial polypropylene (PP) separator. This work provides a new feasible strategy for improving the pore structure and porosity of nanocellulose separators.

Abstract:Cellulose-based separators have great application prospects in the field of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent wettability and thermal stability. However, most current cellulose-based separators come from high-cost nanocellulose and bacterial cellulose. Herein, regenerated cellulose (RC) separators were prepared from dissolving pulp with different degrees of polymerization (DPs) by using the NaOH/urea/thiourea dissolution system as well as a nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. The results showed that the DP of cellulose had a significant influence on the mechanical properties, pore structure, and electrochemical properties of the resultant RC separator. An appropriate increase in the DP could improve the mechanical strength, porosity, and ionic conductivity of the separator. The RC separator with a DP of 599 exhibited the best performance with a porosity of 56.1 %, an average pore size of 305 nm, an electrolyte uptake of 339 %, a tensile strength of 38.3 MPa, and an ionic conductivity of 1.88 mS center dot cm(-1). The lithium-ion battery prepared with the optimal RC separator had a specific capacity of 156.55 mAh/g for 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C and a coulombic efficiency of more than 96 %, which was a clear advantage over the commercially available Celgard2400 and cellulose separators. This work makes contributions to the development of high-performance LIBs separators from cellulose.

Abstract:In this work, a highly porous cellulose/polyarylene ether nitrile (CE/PEN) membrane, bearing hierarchical beads-on-string structures, has been fabricated using regenerated cellulose derived from low-cost waste cigarette butts and PEN via the classical phase conversion method. More specifically, the sequential nucleation of CE and PEN macromolecules from dope solution results in adjustable surface segregation behavior during non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPs), leading to the formation of in-situ assembled rough beads-on-string on the external surfaces and inner pore walls of the membranes. The formation mechanism of a porous membrane with selective component distribution is investigated through thermodynamic and molecular dynamics simulations of phase separation. The resulting composite separator not only exhibits optimal physical properties, including improved mechanical strength, prominent liquid electrolyte wettability (electrolyte contact angle of 0°) and high-thermal resistance, but also demonstrates high ionic conductivity and lower interface resistance. Consequently, the CE/PEN separator enables stable lithium metal anode interface and effectively suppresses the growth of lithium dendrites. More significantly, the resulted lithium metal battery displays remarkable enhancement in capacity, cycling stability (98.6 % for 200 cycles), and rate property (101mAh/g at 10C rate).

Abstract:In this paper, the composite membranes based on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different amounts of halloysite (HNT) nano-filler were prepared by phase inversion method for the application of lithium ion batteries. The effect of the content of HNT on the crystallinity and morphology of the composite membranes were investigated. The results showed that the crystallization behaviors of the HNT/PVDF composite membranes were reduced with the increase of HNT filler content. Furthermore, the introduction of HNT into PVDF matrix remarkably affected the formation rate of nuclei which could evolve into pores to change surface morphology. The HNT/PVDF composite membranes showed the sufficient porosity and good affinity between the eletrolyte as well as the electrode, which led to superb electrolyte uptake and low interfacial impedance. Among HNT/PVDF composite membranes, in particular, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membrane with 4 wt% HNT content had a great electrolyte uptake (430.2%), superior electrochemical stability window (4.5 V), high ionic conductivity (2.4 mS/cm), and low interfacial impedance (63 Omega). The cells assembled with the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes obtain discharge capacities of 164.72 mAh/g (0.1C) and 134.88 mAh/g (2C), corresponding to 96.89% and 79.34% of the theoretical capacity of LiFePO4 (170 mAh/g), respectively, better cycle performance (with capacity retention 89.12% after 100 cycles) at 0.5C and excellent rate performance. It is concluded that the content of HNT deeply affects membrane performance. Therefore, the 4-HNT/PVDF composite membranes could be a good option of high performance lithium ion batteries. LDH Nanosheets Anchored on Bacterial Cellulose-Based Composite Anion Exchange Membranes for Significantly Enhanced Strength and Ionic Conductivity

Abstract:An optimal trade-off between ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is critical for ensuring highperformance applications of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Herein, a bifunctional porous substrate with a nanoarchitecture morphology was prepared; it comprised a two-dimensional (2D) inorganic hydroxide ion conductor (layered double hydroxide, LDH) anchored on three-dimensional natural bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers (LDH@BC) and served as a strong reinforcing framework as well as an ion transport medium. The obtained LDH@BC can effectively prevent the layer stacking of LDH caused by space limitations and regulation functions of the BC fiber substrate, thus providing space for the inherent anion-transport ability of LDH. After quaternized chitosan (QCS) impregnation, the composite membrane showed a high OH- conductivity of 42.54 mS cm-1 (80 degrees C), while the conductivity of the QCS/BC membrane was only 27.90 mS cm-1. More importantly, owing to the synergistic reinforcing effect of LDH@BC, the mechanical strength of the resultant composite AEMs increased sharply to 64.3 MPa, which was nearly 2.5 times higher than that of the pure QCS membrane (only 18.4 MPa). Benefiting from the simultaneously improved anion conductivity and mechanical strength, the QCSfilled LDH@BC composite membrane demonstrated a superior peak power density of 84.2 mW cm-2, while for the fuel cell based on QCS/BC, this value was only 48.0 mW cm-2.

Abstract:Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are increasingly becoming a popular research area due to their ability to function with nonprecious metals in electrochemical devices. Nevertheless, there is a challenge to simultaneously optimize the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of AEMs due to the "trade-off" effect. Herein, we adopted a novel strategy of combining filling and cross-linking using functionalized bacterial cellulose (PBC) as a dual-functional porous support and brominated poly(phenylene oxide) (Br-PPO) as the cross-linking agent and filler. The PBC nanofiber framework together with cross-linking can provide a reliable mechanical support for the subsequent filled polymer, thus improving the mechanical properties and effectively limiting the size change of the final quaternized-PPO (QPPO)-filled PBC composite membrane. The composite membrane showed a very low swelling ratio of only 10.35%, even at a high water uptake (81.83% at 20 degrees C). Moreover, the existence of multiple -NR3+ groups in the cross-link bonds between BC and Br-PPO can provide extra OH- ion transport sites, contributing to the increase in ionic conductivity. The final membrane demonstrated a hydroxide ion conductivity of 62.58 mS cm(-1), which was remarkably higher than that of the pure QPPO membrane by up to 235.93% (80 degrees C). The successful preparation of the PBC3/QPPO membrane provides an effective avenue to tackle the trade-off effect through a dual-functional strategy.

Abstract:The membranes are fabricated through in situ polymerization, incorporating varying concentrations of Poly (diallyldimethyl‐ammonium chloride), followed by modification using double cross‐linking techniques. The BC/PDDA‐G1.5‐B6.75 membrane exhibits a σOH− of 145.12 mS cm−1, a current density of up to 3.0 A cm−2 using electrolytic wate and an excellent power density of 258.7 mW cm−2 in flexible zinc‐air batteries. High electrochemical and durability anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are a vital material for Flexible zinc‐air batteries (F‐ZAB) and AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE) to achieve green economy and environmental protection. However, the existing AEMs possess the disadvantages of a complicated preparation process, poor homogeneity, and unsatisfactory electrochemical performance. Here, a novel alkaline exchange membrane is synthesized using bacterial cellulose (BC) as the matrix, incorporating constrained in situ Poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) polymerization and double chemical cross‐linking techniques. By adjusting the microstructure, a unique long‐range order and dense internal structure to address the issue of loose bonding between PDDA and BC is established and achieve the purpose of rapid OH− conduction. The membranes exhibit excellent application properties, with excellent ionic conductivity (145.12 mS cm−1) and superb mechanical strength (73.26 MPa). Consequently, the membrane is assembled into the F‐ZAB, and the unprecedented power density of 258.7 mW cm−2 can be achieved at room temperature. Moreover, the membrane also can reach 3.0 A cm−2 at 2.3 V, indicating good prospects in the field of water electrolysis in 6 m KOH. The approach paves a new path for manufacturing AEMs for green energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Cellulose acetate (CA), one of the most important cellulose derivatives, is used in various applications especially in membranes, films, fibers, filters, and polymers. Because of the tough and flexible character and resistance to acids of CA, bacterial cellulose acetate (BCA) has been used as reinforcement for high performance separator purposes. In this study, BCA was synthesized through the heterogeneous acetylation in acetic solution with H2SO4 as catalyst by solution plasma process (SPP) of bacterial cellulose (BC) extracted form nata de coco waste. The SPP was considered as mild, simple, and fast method for many kinds of synthesis. The solution plasma time was studied to obtain considerably high DS values (in this work, DS = 1.95). The high DS values are an important feature when considering an environmental factor, good liquid transport and excellent absorption. Furthermore, the BCA incorporated with poly ether block amide by electrospinning method is successfully fabricated as nanofibrous membranes. The proposed PEBAX/BCA nanofibrous membranes display superior sufficient porosity (74.7%), exceptional liquid electrolyte uptake (364.6%), sufficient thermal dimensional stability at 150 °C, great electrochemical stability (discharge capacity at 0.2C = 102.14 mAh g−1), and high ionic conductivity (9.12 × 10−3 S/cm). Furthermore, the PEBAX/BCA nanofibrous membranes can be used as high-performance separators enhancing its safety for Li-ion battery applications.

Abstract:This study aims to enhance cellulose separators for energy storage, focusing on achieving high security and superior electrolyte wetting properties. Bacterial cellulose (BC) separators were initially prepared via vacuum filtration. Subsequently, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) underwent amino-functionalization by successfully cross-linking polyethyleneimine (PEI) using glutaraldehyde. The amino-functionalized CMC was then composited onto the BC separator. This composite separator demonstrated excellent thermal stability at 200 °C and favorable electrolyte wetting. The amino groups in PEI enhanced Li + migration by forming hydrogen bonds with PF 6 − in the electrolyte. Additionally, molecular-level hydrogen bonding between amino groups on PEI and carboxyl/hydroxyl groups in CMC regulated the separator's porosity. The abundant carboxyl groups in CMC facilitated Li + transfer, notably boosting the lithium-ion battery's electrochemical performance. After 90 charge and discharge cycles, the discharge capacity of the battery assembled with BC/CMC-PEI composite separator is 132.8 mAh/g, which is 25.1 % higher than the 106.1 mAh/g of the battery assembled with traditional PP separator. At a current density of 2C, the minimum discharge capacity of the battery assembled with the composite separator is 71.1 mAh/g, while the minimum discharge capacity of the battery assembled with the PP separator is 53.6 mAh/g. This approach using functional group modification provides a promising approach to improving the performance of lithium-ion batteries.

TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofiber membranes as high-performance separators for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:In this paper, 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (TOBC) nanofiber membranes as separators of lithium-ion batteries were successfully prepared from a water dispersion of TOBC nanofibers via a vacuum filtration approach. The TOBC membranes had adequate porosity and desirable affinity with the liquid electrolyte and lithium electrode, giving rise to superior electrolyte uptake and small interfacial resistance. Among the TOBC nanofiber samples, the TOBC1.0 membrane exhibited the best properties, including high electrolyte uptake (339 %), superior electrochemical stability window (>6.0 V), outstanding ionic conductivity (13.45 mS cm-1) and small interfacial resistance (96 Ω). The half cells obtained using the TOBC1.0 membrane achieved a discharge capacity of 166 mA h g-1 (0.2 C), corresponding to 97.6 % of the theoretical value of LiFePO4 (170 mA h g-1), excellent cycle stability (with capacity retention of 94 % after 100 cycles) at 0.2 C and good C-rate performance. Thus, the TOBC nanofiber membranes could be considered as a promising high-performance separator used in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:How to simultaneously improve the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties is a key problem facing currently used anion-exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, novel AEMs were prepared using quaternized bacterial cellulose (QBC) as a dual-functional substrate and then filled with a polymeric ionic liquid (poly(vinylbenzyl) trimethylammonium chloride, PVD) with high ion-exchange capacity through in situ polymerization and crosslinking. The dense quaternary ammonium groups grafted on the surface of BC nanofibers greatly increased the ionic conductivity, while the special three-dimensional network structure of BC significantly enhanced the tensile strength and chemical stability of the obtained PVD filled quaternized BC (QBC/PVD) membranes. The ionic conductivity of QBC/PVD membrane reached as high as 111 mS cm −1 at 80°C, which was 109% higher than that of the pure BC/PVD membrane (only 53 mS cm −1 ). Moreover, the QBC/PVD membrane exhibited extremely high dry strength of 72.3 MPa and satisfactory wet strength and flexibility, this membrane can hang a container containing 500 g of water when at fully hydrated state. The alkaline direct methanol fuel cell equipped with QBC/PVD output a peak power density of 64 mW cm −2 , showing its great application potential as an AEM.

Abstract:The porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes with an average diameter of 700–800 nm were produced in one step by electrospinning a ternary system of PAN/DMF/H2O with phase separation mechanism. Also, non-porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes with a similar diameter were prepared. Physical, morphological, mechanical and thermal properties of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes were characterized and compared with those of non-porous PAN membranes. Thermal shrinkage of the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes and the Celgard PP separators were examined to be 15% and 95%, respectively, after treating for 45 min at 200 °C. The porosity impacts of porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes were explored on some of the effective properties in battery performance. The results revealed that the porous PAN micro/nanofiber membranes had a higher air permeability value than the Celgard PP separators, indicating that the porosity, interconnected pores and ionic conductivity were higher. Abstract:The as‐prepared membrane acted as an anion exchange membrane demonstrated enhanced ionic conductivity and alkaline stability. A balanced relationship among ionic conductivity, mechanical properties and alkaline stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is essential for their practical application in fuel cells. Herein, a porous substrate (BC@LDH) with hierarchical structure was constructed using natural bacterial cellulose (BC) as a template and then in situ grew inorganic hydroxide ion conductor (layered double hydroxide, LDH). The membrane was fabricated via a filling together with sol–gel crosslinking strategy after impregnating an ionomer containing both quaternary ammonium and hydroxyl groups into the porous substrate and then crosslinked by organosiloxane. Due to the synergistic enhancement effect of BC, LDH and cross‐linking, the obtained membrane exhibited a tensile strength of 47.48 MPa that was 88.3% higher than that of the pure ionomer membrane, and showed an ionic conductivity of 70.7 mS cm−1 (80°C) which benefited from the introduction of ionic conductor LDH. More importantly, its alkaline stability was significantly improved and the residual conductivity ratio was still as high as 81.5% even after hot alkali treatment for 580 h. The direct methanol fuel cell assembled with this membrane exhibited a peak power density of 13.6 mW cm−2 with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.72 V, indicating its potential application in biomass‐based AEMs for fuel cells. Highlights Hierarchical porous substrate comprising LDHs anchored BC fiber was prepared. LDH@BC served as a reinforcing substrate and an ion transport medium. The crosslinked membrane showed significantly improved alkaline stability. The membrane had high ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. Providing a new way to design biomass‐based AEMs with high performance.

Abstract:Battery separators have drawn considerable attention due to their vital roles for the safety and electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the cellulose/polysulfonamide composite membrane was successfully fabricated from a mixture of microfibrillar cellulose and polysulfonamide via a facile papermaking process. And its potential application was explored as a high performance lithium-ion battery separator by characterizing their electrolyte wettability, heat tolerance, and electrochemical properties. Lithium cobalt oxide/graphite cells using the separator displayed better capacity retention ratios of 85% after 100 cycles and superior rate capability compared with those of a commercial polypropylene separator. Furthermore, the lithium iron phosphate/lithium half cell using cellulose/polysulfonamide separator exhibited stable charge–discharge capability even at 120 °C. It was demonstrated that the composite separator possessed an enhanced thermal dimensional stability. This research provides a promising new strategy for large-scale fabrication of high performance lithium-ion battery membranes.

Abstract:The separator with excellent mechanical and thermal properties are highly required for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Therefore, it is crucial to develop novel nanofibrous membranes with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability. In this work, the fluorinated polyimide (FPI) was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate composite nanofibrous membranes (CNMs) via electrospinning method. Benefiting from the introduction of aromatic FPI, the prepared PVDF/FPI nanofibrous membranes were endowed with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability. When the FPI content increased from 0 to 30 wt%, the tensile strength of composite nanofibrous membranes enhanced from 1.57 to 2.30 MPa. Moreover, there are almost no dimensional shrinkage for the CNM-30 containing 30 wt% FPI after heat treatment at 160 °C for 1 h. Furthermore, the prepared CNMs show improved electrochemical performances in comparison with neat PVDF and commercial Celgard membranes. The electrolyte uptake and ionic conductivity of the CNMs could reach to 522.4% and 1.14 ms·cm−1, respectively. The prepared CNMs could provide an innovative and promising approach for the development and design of high-performance separators.

Abstract:Cellulose-based separators for lithium ion batteries have attracted much attention due to the good wettability and thermal stability. However, most of them are based on the expensive nanocellulose, cellulose derivatives, or toxic chemicals. Here, a novel nanoporous regenerated cellulose separator (RCS) was prepared from common cotton pulp by a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS). In particular, the whole process of the phase separation was eco-friendly. Ethanol at different temperatures was used as the nonsolvent to regenerate the cotton pulp cellulose solution dissolved in NaOH/urea/water. The study of the phase separation mechanism shows that the low solubility of nonsolvent to urea is the critical factor to form nanoporous structure for a cellulose alkali/urea/water solvent system. Equally important, the obtained RCSs not only have excellent physical properties, but also exhibit higher electrochemical performance than the commercial Celgard2325. This work provides a feasible choice for the preparation of a high-performance cellulose-based separator.

Abstract:Polyimide (PI) membranes with superior chemical resistance, insulation and self-extinguishing are attracting numerous attentions as the separators of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but significant challenges of low mechanical strength and poor electrolyte affinity still remain. Herein, a new kind of environmentally friendly hydrogen-bond (H-bond) cross-linked cellulose/carboxylated PI (Cellulose/PI-COOH) nanofiber composite separator is prepared via electrospinning followed by imidization and alkaline hydrolysis. Besides inheriting the high porosity of the pristine PI separator to absorb the electrolyte, the three-dimensional interconnected structure resulting from H-bond cross-linking is beneficial to improving the mechanical properties of the composite separator, and thereby delivers a tensile strength of 34.2 MPa, 5 times higher than that of the pristine PI separator (6.8 MPa). Meanwhile, the exposed hydroxyl groups on the cellulose, and carboxyl and imino groups on the carboxylated PI can also enhance the electrolyte affinity and wettability of the Cellulose/PI-COOH separator, which plays an important role in increasing the ionic conductivity (0.51 mS cm−1) and widening the electrochemical stability window (∼5.1 V). Consequently, compared with the polypropylene separator and PI separator, the H-bond cross-linked Cellulose/PI-COOH separators show better cycle performance and rate performance when adopted in lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2) half-cells. For example, the Cellulose/PI-COOH-based LiFePO4 half-cell demonstrates the highest initial discharge capacity of 166.2 mAh g−1 and capacity retention rate of 90%, much higher than the pristine PI-based LiFePO4 half-cell (114.6 mAh g−1, 86%). Furthermore, the much enhanced tensile strength, flexibility, thermal stability and flame-resistance of the Cellulose/PI-COOH separator are believed to greatly enhance the safety performance of the obtained LIBs.
