Abstract:A method has been developed for the determination of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in ferrocarbonatite using Inductively Coupled Plasma—Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma—Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The conventional dissolution procedures are tedious, with large measurement uncertainty and are thus not suitable for certified reference material (CRM) production and exploration of REEs. The described method involves leaching of sample using 3 M HCl followed by dissolution of residue (silica and REEs) by HF then determined REEs using ICP-AES and ICP-MS. The leaching step prevents formation of fluoride precipitates of matrix (Ca, Mg, Ba and Al). The method has been validated using CRMs.

Abstract:In this case study, exploratory techniques were applied for the selection of potential targets for rare-earth elements (REEs) in the Fazenda Buriti Mafic–Ultramafic Complex, part of the Goiás Alkaline Province. The results of the processing and interpretation of aeromagnetic and radiometric data associated with the direct measurements of magnetic susceptibility and radiometry in rock samples collected in the study area allowed for the characterization and delimitation of the geological units. The application of Boolean logic in the radiometric data of uranium (U), thorium (Th), and the U/Th ratio allowed for the generation of a prospective map with the delimitation of two exploration targets. A 100 m deep exploratory drill hole was drilled at the main target, intercepting REE mineralization and validating the developed prospective technique. The results contributed to the detailing of a 1:25,000 scale geological map and the interpretation of shallow and deep magnetic structures. Petrophysical data allowed for the estimation of the magnetite content in the main units of the study area. The delimitation of targets with the applied method proved to be efficient after positive geochemical results for REE from the drilled rocks. The total sum of ∑REEs reached 19,629 ppm in the superficial part of the hole and 3,560 ppm in the fresh rock. Mineralogical results in two follow-up drill core samples indicated that monazite was the main REE mineral. Total REE ranged from 34,746 ppm in HG1 to 30,017 ppm in HG2, with LREEs in its majority. The bulk and clay XRD analyses indicated that monazite consisted of 5.7% (HG1) and 5.1% (HG2). The mineral abundance from the TIMA-X analysis indicated 4.2% (HG1) and 4.4% (HG2) in monazite content.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are a series of chemical elements characterized by physicochemical properties that give them special niche applications. Neodymium-based permanent magnets and cathode-ray tube (CRT) phosphors are important components, widely used in critical electric and electronic devices that rely on those elements. Recycling rare earth elements from these residues is very beneficial from environmental and economic points of view. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) is a conventional non-destructive technique that delivers fast and accurate results regarding chemical composition, particularly appropriate for field analyses when using a portable equipment. However, neither rare earth elements nor this kind of matrixes are included in portable XRF spectrometer manufacturer’s calibrations, making this technique difficult to be used to evaluate the presence of REE. Therefore, in this work, calibrations for rare earth elements and other main elements present in cathode-ray tube phosphors and neodymium-based permanent magnets were developed, mimicking target matrixes with metal oxides and sulphides using different composition combinations according to literature reported contents. Calibrations were installed in a portable XRF equipment with the objective of providing an easy and fast method for operational industry measurements. Spectra obtained were treated using proprietary software taking in consideration the overlap of peaks and matrix effects. The final installed calibrations were tested with simulated and real waste specimens of waste materials. Implementing these calibrations on a portable XRF spectrometer can aid screening of target WEEE and estimation of REE content at e-waste recycling plants in a fast and accurate way. The results show quantification is possible in real samples for all key elements in CRT phosphors and NdFeB magnets, but also that magnets are far more challenging to work with.

Abstract:The largest uranium-phosphate deposit in Brazil also contains considerable levels of rare earth elements (REEs), which allows for the co-mining of these three ores. The most common methods for REE determination are time-consuming and demand complex sample preparation and use of hazardous reagents. Thus, the development of a safer and faster method to predict REEs in soil could aid in the assessment of these elements. We investigated the efficiency of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to predict REEs in the soil of the uranium-phosphate deposit of Itataia, Brazil. We collected 50 composite topsoil samples in a well-distributed sampling grid along the deposit. The NIR measures in the soils ranged from 750 to 2500 nm. Three partial least squares regressions (PLSR) were selected to calibrate the spectra: full-spectrum partial least squares (PLS), interval partial least squares (iPLS), and successive projections algorithms for interval selection in partial least squares (iSPA-PLS). The concentrations of REEs were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). In addition to raw spectral data, we also used spectral pretreatments to investigate the effects on prediction results: multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), Savitzky-Golay derivatives (SG), and standard normal variate transformation (SNV). Positive results were obtained in PLS for La and ΣLREE using MSC pretreatment and in iSPA-PLS for Nd and Ce using raw data. The accuracy of the measurements was related to the REE concentration in soil; i.e., elements with higher concentrations tended to present more accurate results. The results obtained here aim to contribute to the development of NIR spectroscopy techniques as a tool for mapping the concentrations of REEs in topsoil.

Abstract:Among critical metals, rare-earth elements (REEs) are irreplaceable for their role in the high-tech industry. The REE deposits commonly host REEs in fine-grained mixtures of phosphate minerals characterized by the variable content of volatile components. However, identification of the volatile components may present challenges for laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) and electron microprobe (EPMA) techniques. Therefore, Raman spectroscopy was applied to laterite and carbonatite samples from the Mount Weld deposit, one of the major REE deposits in Western Australia. The hydrous REE phosphate, rhabdophane, can be confidently distinguished from monazite by the presence of peaks in the region 2800-3600 cm(-1). The presence of peaks at 428, 448, 579, 589, and 605 cm(-1) in the Raman spectra of apatite from carbonatite allows its identification as hydroxyfluorapatite with high concentrations of F and water, and negligible Cl, SO42-, and SiO42-. The Raman spectra and composition of silcrete and carbonatite apatite are similar; thus, silcrete apatite was identified as hydroxyfluorapatite as well. The content of CO32- in both types of apatite was negligible despite the crystallization from carbonatitic magma. The aluminophosphate florencite is characterized by the presence of PO43--related peaks at 639, 1113, and 1609 cm(-1) and H2O/OH-related bands in the 2750-3075 cm(-1) and together with rhabdophane has been identified in fine-grained mineral mixtures. Our study demonstrates that combining Raman spectroscopy with compositional data is a powerful method for the characterization of phosphate minerals in REE deposits.
Laser-induced fluorescence (LiF) spectroscopy for detecting REE cross-contaminations in the Smithsonian rare-earth element phosphate standards

Abstract:Spectroscopy based methods have proven great potential in efficient, non-invasive material characterization. Recording the material-specific optical properties delivers instant information on the composition of an investigated sample surface without chemical sample preparation and may be operated in spatially continuous mode.&#160;In minerals, laser-induced fluorescence (LiF) provides a promising method to address the challenges of robust and efficient rare-earth element (REE) detection.&#160;The method is based on the characteristic electronic transitions within the incompletely filled f-shell of REE. The corresponding emission shows distinct features (spectral fingerprints) in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum that allow to distinguish between individual REE and mineral matrix luminescence. Only REE with completely filled or empty f-orbitals miss characteristic luminescence (i.e. Y3+, Sc3+, La3+, Lu3+), while the emissions of Gd3+ lie at lower wavelengths than the observed VNIR range.We test the suitability of LiF in applications of REE identification by (1) building a spectral LiF library from a sample set of luminescent REE phosphates and (2) evaluating observed emissions in samples of non-luminescent REE, and (3) comparing indicated REE cross-contamination to results of neutron activation analysis (NAA). As samples, we use the Smithsonian REE phosphate standards for electron microprobe analysis. The synthetic material delivers a simple, well-defined host composition, is well investigated and NAA results are available on additional trace REE concentration resulting from the material production procedure. The trace REE concentrations are at the order of 10-4 given in mass fraction. We employ laser-induced fluorescence at three commonly used laser wavelengths (325 nm, 442 nm, 532 nm) to acquire our REE sample spectra and record LiF signals in the visible to near-infrared spectral range (350 &#8211; 1080 nm).The comparison of spectra from non-luminescent REE phosphates shows clear similarities in emission patterns that can be assigned to specific luminescent REE using the spectral LiF library. Our results demonstrate the suitability of LIF for REE detection along with the benefits of selective element excitation and highlight the high sensitivity of the LiF method. The detected emissions in the non-luminescent samples indicate a detection limit below mass fractions of 10-4, when compared to NAA results, but also show that not all REE are equally responsive. Here, the co-existence of REE with complex interactions such as charge transfer contributes to the observed emission pattern.&#160;Adding to the spectral LiF library data and expanding investigations to further mineral hosts will facilitate new applications of LIF for REE analysis in natural samples and its implementation in raw material exploration.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are widely used as important geochemical tracers in earth and planetary sciences. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) techniques have been routinely used for the determination of REE concentrations in various minerals. Nevertheless, it is challenging to determine ultra-low REE contents (down to ng g-1). Cassiterite with ng level REE contents shows false positive Gd and Tb anomalies in various datasets obtained by LA-ICP-MS. Herein, a novel analytical protocol for accurate determination of ultra-trace REE by LA-ICP-MS/MS is developed using oxygen as reaction gas in mass shift mode, which avoids analytical artifacts caused by polyatomic interferences. Its application to cassiterite effectively eliminates Gd and Tb false positive anomalies. Both laser and solution cassiterite results have been used to testify the robustness of our protocol. The accuracy and precision of our approach, tested using the glass reference materials NIST 612 and NIST 614, is better than 10%. Our method can greatly facilitate analysis of other geological, archeological, environmental materials with large amounts of tin in the matrix that disturbs REE measurement.

Abstract:The determination of rare earth elements (REEs) content in different natural minerals is of high interest due to their extensive use in modern and sustainable technologies. The REEs occurring in natural zeolites are specific to each deposit. This study presents the validation and evaluation of measurement uncertainty for the determination of REEs (Ce, Dy, Er, Eu, Gd, La, Lu, Nd, Pr, Sm, Y, and Yb) in natural zeolites using microwave-assisted acid digestion and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) after diffusive gradients in thin-films preconcentration. The mixture of HNO3:HCl:HF of 3:9:2 (v/v/v) and microwave digestion provided suitable recoveries for the analysis of two certified reference materials, CRM BCS-CRM 375/1 and CRM OREAS 460. Good linearity over the calibration range of 0 – 2 μg mL-1, with correlation coefficients of 0.9995 – 1.0000 was obtained for each REEs by ICP-OES. The limits of quantification (LOQS), calculated considering the instrumental LOQs and the sample preparation by microwave digestion, were in the range of 0.20 – 0.60 mg kg-1. A supplementary step of preconcentration/matrix separation based on passive sampling by diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique improved the LOQs by about 20 times after three days of passive accumulation, allowing the measurement of the concentrations of all studied REEs in natural zeolite samples. The proposed methodology is a suitable approach for the measurement of REEs at low concentrations in natural zeolite samples by ICP-OES, and it can be extended to other geological samples. The measurement uncertainty was calculated based on the validation data. The proposed method provides reliable results for the measurement of REEs in natural zeolites and was used to measure the specific concentrations of REEs in natural zeolite samples from the three Romanian quarries. The REEs concentration can be used as a fingerprint for each deposit.

Abstract:This work investigated a rare earth element (REE) natural biogeochemical cycle in an area with a light rare earth element (LREE)-rich ferrocarbonatite intrusion. An REE determination in this geological environment allowed us to trace REE natural transfers in order to better manage future REE mining exploitations. Our findings suggest that although REE concentrations in abiotic compartments (soil and freshwater systems) and biotic samples (terrestrial and aquatic plants) were low, the LREE fractionation observed in the parent material was maintained along compartments. Additionally, Nd anomalies observed in the sediment pore water suggest a potential different biogeochemical cycle of this element in aquatic systems. According to the potential bioaccumulation of REEs in the organisms of two studied plants belonging to terrestrial and aquatic compartments, Equisetum arvense L. and Typha latifolia L. (respectively), we observed that REEs were not accumulated and that they showed limited REE transfer inside plants, but with an increased uptake of Eu relative to the other REEs. Our results indicated a low mobility and transfer of REEs from REE-rich bedrocks in a natural area toward terrestrial and freshwater systems, but also pointed to a dilution of the REE content in the different compartments, maintaining the LREE fractionation. Our findings provide new knowledge about the REE biochemical cycle in a natural area (from rocks to plants) and represent a starting point for an environmentally friendly exploitation of future REE mining areas.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) hold significant industrial, scientific, and modern technological worth. This study focused on detecting and quantifying REEs in various geological ore samples. These samples were collected from different REE-bearing locations recommended by geological experts. The analysis was conducted using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and laser ablation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LA-TOF-MS). In this work, LIBS methodology was employed using three different configurations: standard LIBS, LIBS with an applied magnetic field, and LIBS with both an applied magnetic field and target sample heating within an optimal temperature range. Elements from the REE group, specifically lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), and neodymium (Nd), were identified and quantified. To detect, quantify, and validate the results from LIBS and LA-TOF-MS, we utilized an array of analytical techniques—Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (ED-XRF), and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Interestingly, the quantitative results for REEs (La, Ce, and Nd) in the ore samples obtained using the LIBS technique with various configurations were found to be in agreement with those from LA-TOF-MS, EDX, XRF, and ICP-OES. In addition, LIBS enables detailed microchemical imaging, allowing the map of the spatial distribution of elements within the mineral–ore matrix. The high-resolution microscale elemental mapping of REEs was accomplished using the emission lines Ce (II) at 446.0 nm, La (II) at 492.1 nm, and Nd (II) at 388.8 nm. By integrating multiple analytical techniques, our study enabled the construction of a complete elemental distribution map, providing new insights into the geochemical processes and mineral composition of rare earth ores, while advancing geochemistry and contributing valuable data for rare earth resource exploration.

Abstract:Localization is one of the most important subjects in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). To reduce the number of beacons and adopt probabilistic methods, some particle filter-based mobile beacon-assisted localization approaches have been proposed, such as Mobile Beacon-assisted Localization (MBL), Adapting MBL (A-MBL), and the method proposed by Hang et al. Some new significant problems arise in these approaches, however. The first question is which probability distribution should be selected as the dynamic model in the prediction stage. The second is whether the unknown node adopts neighbors’ observation in the update stage. The third is how to find a self-adapting mechanism to achieve more flexibility in the adapting stage. In this paper, we give the theoretical analysis and experimental evaluations to suggest which probability distribution in the dynamic model should be adopted to improve the efficiency in the prediction stage. We also give the condition for whether the unknown node should use the observations from its neighbors to improve the accuracy. Finally, we propose a Self-Adapting Mobile Beacon-assisted Localization (SA-MBL) approach to achieve more flexibility and achieve almost the same performance with A-MBL.

Abstract:The heat output from the hands of Arctic fishermen was studied by water calorimetry, using an initial water-bath temperature of 4°C. The fishermen were compared with a group of young men not habituated to work in the cold. The subjects were investigated when comfortably warm and when kept in heat debt by being chilled. The total heat output from the hand during the 30 minutes of calorimetry ranged from 1907 cal/100 ml hand tissue/min. (cold room) to 4886 cal/100 ml hand tissue (warm room). There was found no significant difference of the mean heat output between the two groups, neither when they were in general heat balance, nor when in heat debt. One subject who developed cold urticaria showed a considerably higher heat output than any of the other persons investigated. The results do not agree with the view that men habituated to working in the cold with their hands show an increased blood flow in the cold when studied under environmental temperatures low enough to produce a general vasoconstriction. Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical elements in modern society due to their irreplaceable role in new innovative and energy technologies. The giant carbonatite-related Bayan Obo deposit contributes most REE resources in the world’s market, while its origin is still unclear because of the complicated and diverse REE ore mineralogy and texture. Thescanning electron mircroscopy SEM)-based automated mineralogy allows for the numeric assessment of rocks and ores’ compositional and textural properties. Here, we use TIMA (TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer) to quantitatively characterize REE ore mineralogy from the deep drill core within the H8 unit (“dolomite marble”) to better understand the deposit. The mineral composition, occurrence, and Ce elemental deportment of the borehole ores at different depths (i.e., 1107 m, 1246 m, 1406 m, 1546 m, and 1682 m) were obtained. The results show that the main types of ores in the investigated samples can be divided into banded REE-Fe ores, banded REE ores, disseminated REE-Fe ores, and veined REE ores. REE and gangue minerals vary significantly in abundance and occurrence. Monazite-(Ce) and bastnäsite-(Ce) are the primary REE host minerals, and both contribute the most to the REE budget. Other REE minerals, such as parisite-(Ce)/synchysite-(Ce), cerite-(Ce), huanghoite-(Ce)/cebaite-(Ce), and aeschynite-(Ce), are significant contributors. The gangue minerals generally include fluorite, barite, magnetite, pyrite, quartz, magnesio-arfvedsonite, and minerals of the biotite and apatite groups, among others. Combined with the newly published mineral-scale chronological and isotopic geochemical analyses, it is reasonable to conclude that the later hydrothermal fluids remobilized and redistributed the original Mesoproterozoic carbonatitic REE minerals and formed a high variable ore mineral assemblage. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the mineralogical study using TIMA can provide accurate and reliable mineralogy data for the comprehensive interpretation of the complex REE ores, and extend our understanding of the deposit.

Abstract:The polymetallic mineral samples in Pan-Xi region are rich in rare earth resources, and exploring an efficient and accurate analysis method is of great significance for their comprehensive utilization. In this study, the samples were decomposed by three methods, namely closed acid dissolution, open acid dissolution with five acid and alkali fusion with sodium peroxide, and the 15 REE were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with Rh and Re as internal standard correction elements. The comparative experiments were conducted using standard substances, and the results showed: (1) The detection limit of closed acid dissolution method was low with relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 2.51% to 9.56% and the accuracy of method (Δlg C ) ranging from 0.006 to 0.073, while the sample processing was long, and the results of some REE were low. (2) The RSD of open acid dissolution with five acid method ranged from 1.93% to 7.96%, and Δlg C ranged from 0.004 to 0.045 with low results of the determination results of REE. (3) The alkali fusion with sodium peroxide method eliminated the influence of matrix effects by selecting instrument optimization, sample dilution, appropriate internal standard elements, etc. The RSD ranged from 1.24% to 6.49%, and Δlg C ranged from 0.001 to 0.032. In conclusion, alkali fusion with sodium peroxide method has a fast analysis process, complete sample dissolution, and the accuracy and precision of test results can meet the requirements of specification (DZ/T0011-2015), which is most suitable for the analysis of REE in polymetallic mineral samples from Pan-Xi region.

Enrichment and fractionation of rare earth elements (REEs) in ion-adsorption-type REE deposits: Constraints of an iron (hydr)oxide–clay mineral composite

Abstract:Ion-adsorption-type rare earth element (REE) deposits are the source of more than 90% of global heavy REEs (HREEs). Thus, understanding the ore genesis of REEs, particularly the distribution characteristics and enrichment mechanisms of HREEs, is vital for efficient exploration and mining of ion-adsorption-type REE deposits worldwide. The characteristics and petrogenesis of bedrock, and the aqueous mobility of REEs, are known to be important factors controlling REE accumulation and fractionation in the weathering crust of REE deposits. However, the effect of REE adsorption on secondary minerals, which is a crucial step in deposit formation, remains poorly understood. This problem was addressed by the study described herein, which involved a systematic analysis of the complete weathering profile (78 m) of the Renju ion-adsorption-type REE deposit in South China and a simulated adsorption experiment. Clay minerals and iron (Fe) (hydr)oxides are the dominant REE adsorbents in the weathering crust and most are micro-to-nanosized particles. Thus, the fine particle fraction (< 2 μm) was separated from field samples, to better disclose their effects on the concentration and redistribution of REEs. Phase compositions and morphologies were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectrometry, and scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), which revealed that various clay minerals and Fe (hydr)oxides form composites along the profile of the deposit. Composites of ferrihydrite–kaolinite, goethite–kaolinite/halloysite, and hematite–kaolinite/halloysite were found to be distributed in the semi-weathered, completely weathered, and topsoil layers, respectively, with different sizes and shapes. The concentrations and partition patterns of REEs in different occurrence states were distinguished after sequential extraction. Ion-exchangeable-REEs were the major state and enriched in the upper completely weathered layer. These species were found to be adsorbed onto kaolinite and halloysite via electrostatic attraction, without obvious fractionation. Fe (hydr)oxides were determined to comprise ca. 20% of REEs at most depths and over 50% of REEs in the topsoil and semi-weathered layer. It was found that Fe (hydr)oxides scavenge REEs through complexation and oxidation, resulting in HREE enrichment and a positive cerium (Ce) anomaly, respectively. In addition, compared with crystalline Fe (hydr)oxides, amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides immobilize more REEs but exhibit weaker preferential adsorption of HREEs. The above-described findings are consistent with the results of simulated experiments for REE adsorption onto a clay mineral–Fe (hydr)oxide composite (Bt-60), which was obtained from hydrothermal processing of biotite. Furthermore, the distributions and stabilities of LREEs and HREEs were distinguished by TEM–energy–dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) of Bt-60 before and after REE extraction by ammonium sulfate. The phase transformation pathways of clay minerals and Fe (hydr)oxides, and their different enrichment and fractionation characteristics in REEs, were also discussed in terms of the structure and surface properties of minerals, adsorption mechanisms, and variations in chemical properties across the REE group. The results shed new light on how clay minerals and Fe (hydr)oxides affect the enrichment and fractionation of REEs in ion-adsorption-type deposits.

Development of ICP-AES Method for Analysis of Iron Ore Raw Materials

Abstract:A method for the determination of Fe tot , SiO 2 , P, V 2 O 5 , TiO 2 , Cr 2 O 3 , Ni, Cu, and Zn in iron ore raw materials (i.e., pellets, iron ore agglomerate, aspiration dust and slag component of scrap) by the method of atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-AES) has been developed using microwave sample preparation in analytical autoclaves. The composition of the acid mixture for the complete dissolution of the sample component was proposed, and the parameters of microwave decomposition, excluding the depressurization of the autoclave and the loss of sample elements which form volatile compounds, were selected. The developed method of microwave sample preparation in closed autoclaves made it possible to decompose iron ore samples using the minimum amount of acid (17 cm 3 ) in 45 min. Conditions for the determination of normalized elements in iron ore samples by the ICP-AES method after microwave sample preparation were determined: the operating parameters of the spectrometer were optimized, the analytical lines of each determined element free from spectral overlaps were selected, and the efficiency of using cadmium as an internal standard was experimentally proved. The equations for calibration dependences and the ranges of determinable contents are presented. When using cadmium as an internal standard in the analysis of iron ore, a decrease in the value of the standard deviation from 0.17 to 0.04 is observed when determining Cr 2 O 3 ; from 0.02 to 0.004 when determining Fe; from 0.03 to 0.002 when determining SiO 2 ; from 0.015 to 0.008 when determining TiO 2 ; and from 0.17 to 0.02 when determining V 2 O 5 . The correctness of the determination of the standardized elements by the developed method is evaluated using certified reference samples (CRS) similar in composition to the analyzed material. The results of determining the standardized elements according to the developed methodology were compared with the data obtained using GOST-approved methods of analysis and then checked in accordance with the recommendations of RMG 76-2014. The developed ICP-AES technique is characterized by a wider linear range of the determined concentrations than that in GOST-approved techniques, thus providing determination of the components in iron ore raw materials that could not be controlled before.

Abstract:Understanding the distribution and concentration of Rare Earth Elements (REE) within various minerals and ores is crucial in mineralogy and geology for comprehending the micro-scale processes that contribute to the formation of REE-bearing minerals. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy elemental imaging emerges as a valuable tool due to its spatial resolution (15 μm) and ability for blind and rapid identification of elements within thin rock sections. Geological samples from the metamorphic core of the Zagros orogen (Iran) prepared as thin rock sections have been analyzed by LIBS imaging. Mineralogical phases have been determined from LIBS images of major elements. We first found that the distribution of Yttrium and REEs varies depending on the metamorphic stage. Then, while garnets may exhibit zoning in Mn, we observed that not all of them incorporate Yttrium. Finally, we demonstrated that REEs carriers include bastnaesite (Y Ce La F) and xenotime-like minerals primarily composed of Y with varying amounts of Yb, Gd, and Nd. We also demonstrated that the REEs minerals can exhibit either millimetric size when embedded within andalusite phases, or micrometric size when randomly scattered throughout the matrix. And we have also observed that some samples feature abundant Y-enriched Zircon phases. This study demonstrates that μLIBS imaging enables drawing a comprehensive picture of geological samples down to the micrometric scale. It has become a key technique in this field, providing access to the mineralogy of REE minerals, which is paramount for optimizing the final exploitation process compared to other analytical techniques.

Abstract:A new sorbent, maleic acid grafted polytetrafluoroethylene fiber (MA-PTFE), was prepared and evaluated for on-line solid-phase extraction coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for fast, selective, and sensitive determination of (ultra)trace rare earth elements (REEs) in environmental samples. The REEs in aqueous samples at pH = 3.0 were selectively extracted onto a microcolumn packed with the MA-PTFE fiber, and the adsorbed REEs were subsequently eluted on-line with 0.9 mol l−1 HNO3 for ICP-MS determination. The new sorbent extraction system allows effective preconcentration and separation of the REEs from the major matrix constituents of alkali and alkali earth elements, particularly their separation from barium that produces considerable isobaric interferences of 134Ba16O1H+, 135Ba16O+, 136Ba16O1H+, and 137Ba16O+ on 151Eu+ and 153Eu+. With the use of a sample loading flow rate of 7.4 ml min−1 for 120 s preconcentration, enhancement factors of 69–97 and detection limits (3s) of 1–20 pg l−1 were achieved at a sample throughput of 22 samples h−1. The precision (RSD) for 16 replicate determinations of 50 ng l−1 of REEs was 0.5–1.1%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of (ultra)trace REEs in sediment, soil, and seawater samples.

Abstract:Abstract Carbonate minerals are ubiquitous in most sediment-hosted mineral deposits. These deposits can contain a variety of carbonate types with complex paragenetic relationships. When normalized to chondritic values (CN), rare-earth elements and yttrium (REE+Y CN ) can be used to constrain fluid chemistry and fluid-rock interaction processes in both low- and high-temperature settings. Unlike other phases (e.g., pyrite), the application of in situ laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (LA-ICP-MS) data to the differentiation of pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonates remains relatively untested. To assess the potential applicability of carbonate in situ REE+Y data, we combined transmitted light and cathodoluminescence (CL) petrography with LA-ICP-MS analysis of carbonate mineral phases from (1) the Proterozoic George Fisher clastic dominated (CD-type) massive sulfide deposit and from (2) correlative, barren host rock lithologies (Urquhart Shale Formation). The REE+Y CN composition of pre-ore calcite suggests it formed during diagenesis from diagenetic pore fluids derived from ferruginous, anoxic seawater. Hydrothermal and hydrothermally altered calcite and dolomite from George Fisher is generally more LREE depleted than the pre-ore calcite, whole-rock REE concentrations, and shale reference values. We suggest this is the result of hydrothermal alteration by saline Cl - -rich mineralizing fluids. Furthermore, the presence of both positive and negative Eu/Eu * values in calcite and dolomite indicates that the mineralizing fluids were relatively hot (>250°C) and cooled below 200–250°C during ore formation. This study confirms the hypothesis that in situ REE+Y data can be used to differentiate between pre-ore and hydrothermal carbonate and provide important constraints on the conditions of ore formation.
