Abstract:Conservation of undrained tropical peatland ecosystems is critical for climate change mitigation as they store a tremendous amount of soil carbon that is preserved under anoxic water-logged conditions. Unfortunately, there are too few measurements of carbon fluxes from these ecosystems to estimate the climate change mitigation potential from such conservation efforts. Here, we measured carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) fluxes as well as fluvial organic carbon export over the peat swamp forest within an undrained tropical peatland landscape in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Our measurements throughout one year (Oct 2022–Sep 2023) showed that despite its water-logged condition, peat and water overlying the swamp forest on average emits 11.02 ± 0.49 MgCO 2 ha −1 yr −1 of CO 2 and 0.58 ± 0.04 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 of CH 4 . Further, the fluvial organic carbon export contributes to additional carbon loss of 1.68 ± 0.06 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 . Our results help improve the accuracy of carbon accounting from undrained tropical peatlands, where we estimated a total carbon loss of 13.28 ± 0.50 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 . Nevertheless, the total carbon loss reported from our sites is about half than what is reported from the drained peatland landscapes in the region and resulted in a larger onsite carbon sink potential estimate compared to other undrained peat swamp forests. Together, these findings indicate that conserving the remaining undrained peatland ecosystems in Indonesia from drainage and degradation is a promising natural climate solution strategy that avoids significant carbon emissions.

The clinical implications of shrinkage stress seem to be limited as long as correct restorative procedures are precisely followed. With the introduction of a silorane-based composite resin exhibiting a low-shrinkage behaviour the dentist is confronted with some uncertain factors. Long-term clinical studies are needed before applying these materials on a large scale.

Abstract:Land use change in tropical peat soil is thought to cause intense greenhouse gas emissions by enhancing organic matter decomposition. Although microbes in peat soil play key roles in the emission of greenhouse gases, their characteristics remain unknown. This study was conducted to clarify the effect of land use change (drainage, forest fire and agricultural land use) on the control of gas emission factors with respect to the characteristics of microbes in tropical peat soils. Field observations were carried out in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, from July 2009 to March 2011. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes in tropical peat soils were measured in an undrained natural forest, a drained forest, two burned forests and four croplands. A fumigation-extraction method was used to measure the soil microbial biomass to evaluate the relationships among the soluble organic carbon (SOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) and the CO2 and N2O fluxes in peat soils. Regarding the relationships between weekly precipitation and N2O emission, positive relationships were found in both the forest and cropland soils. However, the slope of the regression line was much higher in the croplands than in the forest soils. The CO2 fluxes in the croplands but not in the forest soils were significantly correlated with both precipitation and N2O fluxes. In contrast, the CO2 fluxes in the forest but not in the croplands were significantly correlated with the MBC and the MBC/SOC ratio. The SOC did not show any relationship with the CO2 fluxes but showed a positive relationship with the MBN and a negative linear relationship with the nitrate (NO3–) concentration. In addition, the MBN showed a negative relationship with most of the probable numbers of ammonium oxidizers. These results indicate that the agricultural land use of tropical peat soils varied the factors controlling greenhouse gas emissions through microbial activities. Therefore, the microbial biomass may be a key factor in controlling CO2 fluxes in forest soils but not in agricultural peat soils. However, precipitation may be a key factor in agricultural peat soils but not in forest soils.

Radiative forcing of methane fluxes offsets net carbon dioxide uptake for a tropical flooded forest

Abstract:Wetlands are important sources of methane (CH4 ) and sinks of carbon dioxide (CO2 ). However, little is known about CH4 and CO2 fluxes and dynamics of seasonally flooded tropical forests of South America in relation to local carbon (C) balances and atmospheric exchange. We measured net ecosystem fluxes of CH4 and CO2 in the Pantanal over 2014-2017 using tower-based eddy covariance along with C measurements in soil, biomass and water. Our data indicate that seasonally flooded tropical forests are potentially large sinks for CO2 but strong sources of CH4 , particularly during inundation when reducing conditions in soils increase CH4 production and limit CO2 release. During inundation when soils were anaerobic, the flooded forest emitted 0.11 ± 0.002 g CH4 -C m-2 d-1 and absorbed 1.6 ± 0.2 g CO2 -C m-2 d-1 (mean ± 95% confidence interval for the entire study period). Following the recession of floodwaters, soils rapidly became aerobic and CH4 emissions decreased significantly (0.002 ± 0.001 g CH4 -C m-2 d-1 ) but remained a net source, while the net CO2 flux flipped from being a net sink during anaerobic periods to acting as a source during aerobic periods. CH4 fluxes were 50 times higher in the wet season; DOC was a minor component in the net ecosystem carbon balance. Daily fluxes of CO2 and CH4 were similar in all years for each season, but annual net fluxes varied primarily in relation to flood duration. While the ecosystem was a net C sink on an annual basis (absorbing 218 g C m-2 (as CH4 -C + CO2 -C) in anaerobic phases and emitting 76 g C m-2 in aerobic phases), high CH4 effluxes during the anaerobic flooded phase and modest CH4 effluxes during the aerobic phase indicate that seasonally flooded tropical forests can be a net source of radiative forcings on an annual basis, thus acting as an amplifying feedback on global warming.
Carbon accumulation of tropical peatlands over millennia: a modeling approach

Abstract:Tropical peatlands cover an estimated 440,000 km2 (~10% of global peatland area) and are significant in the global carbon cycle by storing about 40-90 Gt C in peat. Over the past several decades, tropical peatlands have experienced high rates of deforestation and conversion, which is often associated with lowering the water table and peat burning, releasing large amounts of carbon stored in peat to the atmosphere. We present the first model of long-term carbon accumulation in tropical peatlands by modifying the Holocene Peat Model (HPM), which has been successfully applied to northern temperate peatlands. Tropical HPM (HPMTrop) is a one-dimensional, nonlinear, dynamic model with a monthly time step that simulates peat mass remaining in annual peat cohorts over millennia as a balance between monthly vegetation inputs (litter) and monthly decomposition. Key model parameters were based on published data on vegetation characteristics, including net primary production partitioned into leaves, wood, and roots; and initial litter decomposition rates. HPMTrop outputs are generally consistent with field observations from Indonesia. Simulated long-term carbon accumulation rates for 11,000-year-old inland, and 5000-year-old coastal peatlands were about 0.3 and 0.59 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1), and the resulting peat carbon stocks at the end of the 11,000-year and 5000-year simulations were 3300 and 2900 Mg C ha(-1), respectively. The simulated carbon loss caused by coastal peat swamp forest conversion into oil palm plantation with periodic burning was 1400 Mg C ha(-1) over 100 years, which is equivalent to ~2900 years of C accumulation in a hectare of coastal peatlands.

Abstract:This paper reports on the results of a short-term observation of CO2 flux above a tropical forest at Pasoh in Peninsular Malaysia, using the eddy covariance method with a closed-path CO2 analyzer, in March 1998. CO2 concentration profiles above and in a canopy were also measured. In the daytime, the time series of fluctuations in CO2 concentration above the forest drew the ramp pattern with a period of 2min. This suggests that large-scale turbulent motions contribute to CO2 flux in the daytime. We obtained data on the CO2 flux for 6 days and CO2 storage flux under the flux measurement level for 3 days in this observation. The values of the CO2 flux fell within −1.0 to 0.5mg CO2 m−2s−1. Net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) was estimated as the sum of the CO2 flux and the CO2 storage flux. Compared with the CO2 flux, the CO2 storage flux was relatively large in the early morning and the nighttime, therefore, the storage flux became important to estimate the NEE in those periods. The daily values of the NEE ranged from −2.08 to −2.74gCm−2 per day. The results suggest that this tropical forest was a CO2 sink during the period. Although we tired to calculate the mass flow component proposed by Lee [Agric. For. Meteorol. 91 (1998) 39], the magnitudes of the mass flow obtained here were, from 5.20 to 12.55gCm−2 per day, much larger than the magnitudes of the NEE.
Peatland restoration pathways to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and retain peat carbon

Abstract:Peatlands play a crucial role in the global carbon (C) cycle, making their restoration a key strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and retaining C. This study analyses the most common restoration pathways employed in boreal and temperate peatlands, potentially applicable in tropical peat swamp forests. Our analysis focuses on the GHG emissions and C retention potential of the restoration measures. To assess the C stock change in restored (rewetted) peatlands and afforested peatlands with continuous drainage, we adopt a conceptual approach that considers short-term C capture (GHG exchange between the atmosphere and the peatland ecosystem) and long-term C sequestration in peat. The primary criterion of our conceptual model is the capacity of restoration measures to capture C and reduce GHG emissions. Our findings indicate that carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most influential part of long-term climate impact of restored peatlands, whereas moderate methane (CH4) emissions and low N2O fluxes are relatively unimportant. However, lateral losses of dissolved and particulate C in water can account up to a half of the total C stock change. Among the restored peatland types, Sphagnum paludiculture showed the highest CO2 capture, followed by shallow lakes and reed/grass paludiculture. Shallow lakeshore vegetation in restored peatlands can reduce CO2 emissions and sequester C but still emit CH4, particularly during the first 20 years after restoration. Our conceptual modelling approach reveals that over a 300-year period, under stable climate conditions, drained bog forests can lose up to 50% of initial C content. In managed (regularly harvested) and continuously drained peatland forests, C accumulation in biomass and litter input does not compensate C losses from peat. In contrast, rewetted unmanaged peatland forests are turning into a persistent C sink. The modelling results emphasized the importance of long-term C balance analysis which considers soil C accumulation, moving beyond the short-term C cycling between vegetation and the atmosphere. A drained nutrient‐poor peatland forest in boreal Sweden constitutes a net carbon sink after integrating terrestrial and aquatic fluxes

Abstract:This study reveals that a drained peatland forest in the nutrient‐poor boreal region acts as net ecosystem carbon sink (−115 ± 5 g C m−2 year−1) after integrating all key terrestrial and aquatic carbon fluxes. It further shows that, following >100 years of drainage, the environmental response of carbon fluxes significantly differed from those in an adjacent natural mire. The study further suggests that contrasting forest structure may considerably affect the net ecosystem carbon balance, highlighting in particular the important role of the ground vegetation. Northern peatlands provide a globally important carbon (C) store. Since the beginning of the 20th century, however, large areas of natural peatlands have been drained for biomass production across Fennoscandia. Today, drained peatland forests constitute a common feature of the managed boreal landscape, yet their ecosystem C balance and associated climate impact are not well understood, particularly within the nutrient‐poor boreal region. In this study, we estimated the net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) from a nutrient‐poor drained peatland forest and an adjacent natural mire in northern Sweden by integrating terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes with aquatic losses of dissolved organic C (DOC) and inorganic C based on eddy covariance and stream discharge measurements, respectively, over two hydrological years. Since the forest included a dense spruce‐birch area and a sparse pine area, we were able to further evaluate the effect of contrasting forest structure on the NECB and component fluxes. We found that the drained peatland forest was a net C sink with a 2‐year mean NECB of −115 ± 5 g C m−2 year−1 while the adjacent mire was close to C neutral with 14.6 ± 1.7 g C m−2 year−1. The NECB of the drained peatland forest was dominated by the net CO2 exchange (net ecosystem exchange [NEE]), whereas NEE and DOC export fluxes contributed equally to the mire NECB. We further found that the C sink strength in the sparse pine forest area (−153 ± 8 g C m−2 year−1) was about 1.5 times as high as in the dense spruce‐birch forest area (−95 ± 8 g C m−2 year−1) due to enhanced C uptake by ground vegetation and lower DOC export. Our study suggests that historically drained peatland forests in nutrient‐poor boreal regions may provide a significant net ecosystem C sink and associated climate benefits.

Abstract:Tropical peatlands are a known source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, but their contribution to atmospheric CH4 is poorly constrained. Since the 1980s, extensive areas of the peatlands in Southeast Asia have experienced land‐cover change to small‐holder agriculture and forest plantations. This land–cover change generally involves lowering of groundwater level (GWL), as well as modification of vegetation type, both of which potentially influence CH4 emissions. We measured CH4 exchanges at the landscape scale using eddy covariance towers over two land‐cover types in tropical peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia: (1) a natural forest, and (2) an Acacia crassicarpa plantation. Annual CH4 exchanges over the natural forest (9.1±0.9 g CH4 m‐2 year‐1) were around twice as high as those of the Acacia plantation (4.7±1.5 g CH4 m‐2 year‐1). Results highlight that tropical peatlands are significant CH4 sources, and probably have a greater impact on global atmospheric CH4 concentrations than previously thought. Observations showed a clear diurnal variation in CH4 exchange over the natural forest where the GWL was higher than 40 cm below the ground surface. The diurnal variation in CH4 exchanges was strongly correlated with associated changes in the canopy conductance to water vapor, photosynthetic photon flux density, vapor pressure deficit, and air temperature. Absence of a comparable diurnal pattern in CH4 exchange over the Acacia plantation may be the result of the GWL being consistently below the root zone. Our results, which are among the first eddy covariance CH4 exchange data reported for any tropical peatland, should help to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of CH4 emissions from a globally important ecosystem, provide a more complete estimate of the impact of land‐cover change on tropical peat, and develop science‐based peatland management practices that help to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract:Logged and structurally degraded tropical forests are fast becoming one of the most prevalent land-use types throughout the tropics and are routinely assumed to be a net carbon sink because they experience rapid rates of tree regrowth. Yet this assumption is based on forest biomass inventories that record carbon stock recovery but fail to account for the simultaneous losses of carbon from soil and necromass. Here, we used forest plots and an eddy covariance tower to quantify and partition net ecosystem CO 2 exchange in Malaysian Borneo, a region that is a hot spot for deforestation and forest degradation. Our data represent the complete carbon budget for tropical forests measured throughout a logging event and subsequent recovery and found that they constitute a substantial and persistent net carbon source. Consistent with existing literature, our study showed a significantly greater woody biomass gain across moderately and heavily logged forests compared with unlogged forests, but this was counteracted by much larger carbon losses from soil organic matter and deadwood in logged forests. We estimate an average carbon source of 1.75 ± 0.94 Mg C ha −1 yr −1 within moderately logged plots and 5.23 ± 1.23 Mg C ha − 1 yr − 1 in unsustainably logged and severely degraded plots, with emissions continuing at these rates for at least one-decade post-logging. Our data directly contradict the default assumption that recovering logged and degraded tropical forests are net carbon sinks, implying the amount of carbon being sequestered across the world's tropical forests may be considerably lower than currently estimated.
Transient and Lagged Effects of Vegetation Dynamics&#160;on the Global CO2 Growth Rate

Abstract:The land carbon cycle is fundamental in regulating atmospheric CO2 dynamics from seasonal to centennial scales. The fine equilibrium between photosynthetic gains spent in metabolic costs and/or lost in mortality underpins the contribution of terrestrial ecosystems to the global carbon cycle. Uncertainties and divergent hypotheses on the role of climate in regulating their underlying mechanisms hamper our current diagnostic and prognostic abilities despite growing evidence on ecosystem vulnerability to present and future changes in climate. However, quantitative knowledge of the contributions of different carbon cycle processes regulating carbon uptake and release still need to be improved, inflating the uncertainties in future projections of net land-atmosphere carbon exchanges. In this study, we rely on satellite-based Earth observation retrievals of above-ground biomass and vegetation primary productivity to reconstruct the land-atmosphere carbon exchange dynamics over the last two decades, through the application of a three-box model at the pixel level. Our approach confidently reproduces 60% of the observed variability in atmospheric CO2 growth rate (CGR) over throughout 1997-2019 (R = 0.78, p-val < 0.05), with a low RMSE of 1.0 PgC yr-1. We further detail CO2 release from vegetation dynamics emerging from quick turnover induced by wildfires and leaves senescence, as well as the slow turnover from plant and soil decomposition mechanisms. This allows us to differentiate between transient and lagged effects on land-to-atmosphere fluxes. The carbon release, characterized by a lag of over one year, referred to as lagged effects. Globally, the lagged responses accounted for 50% of the variability in CGR, exceeding three times the contribution of transient fluxes from live vegetation. We have yet to a change or trend in the total contributions of vegetation dynamics to CGR. Yet, the relative role of lagged effects to CGR via decomposition fluxes increased by 50%, possibly due to accelerated mortality and decomposition fluxes. As global warming imposes higher stress on vegetation while increasing temperature-mediated decomposition, our results highlight the importance of quantifying their underlying metabolic responses. Such understanding is instrumental for assessing the contribution of adaptation and mitigation measures that will shape the contribution of the terrestrial carbon cycle to dampen the effects of anthropogenic emissions on global climate.

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems exhibit significant carbon storage and sequestration. Its capacity to store and sequester significant amounts of carbon makes this ecosystem very important for climate change mitigation. Indonesia, owing to the largest mangrove cover in the world, has approximately 3.14 PgC stored in the mangroves, or about 33% of all carbon stored in coastal ecosystems globally. Unfortunately, our comprehensive understanding of carbon flux is hampered by the incomplete repertoire of field measurement data, especially from mangrove ecosystem-rich regions such as Indonesia and Asia Pacific. This study fills the gap in greenhouse gases (GHGs) flux studies in mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia by quantifying the soil CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes for different land use types in mangrove ecosystems, i.e., secondary mangrove (SM), restored mangrove (RM), pond embankment (PE) and active aquaculture pond (AP). Environmental parameters such as soil pore salinity, soil pore water pH, soil temperature, air temperature, air humidity and rainfall are also measured.

The prognostic role of CD5 negativity in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: a case-control study.

Abstract:B cells in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) usually express the CD5 antigen, which appears to participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune phenomena. However, 7-20% of B-CLL patients are CD5-. The aim of this study was to assess whether CD5 expression could be used as a discriminating factor for two subgroups of B-CLL. Twenty-nine CD5- B-CLL patients were compared in terms of clinico-biological characteristics and survival with a control group of 29 sex- and age-matched, consecutive CD5+ B-CLL subjects. B-CLL was considered to be CD5- when less than 5% of mononuclear cells expressed CD5 after subtraction of the number of T cells. Splenomegaly, lymph node involvement, and haemolytic anemia were found in CD5+ patients in a significantly higher proportion than in their CD5- counterparts, who presented with an earlier stage of disease. CD5- patients had a median survival of 97.2 (22-130) months, exceeding CD5+ subjects significantly [84.0 (19-120) months, p = 0.0025]. CD5- patients seemingly present with milder disease and have a favourable prognosis compared with the vast majority of B-CLL patients who express CD5.
Terrestrial and Aquatic Carbon Dynamics in Tropical Peatlands under Different Land Use Types: A Systematic Review Protocol

Abstract:Peatlands are both responding to and influencing climate change. While numerous studies on peatland carbon dynamics have been published in boreal and temperate regions for decades, a much smaller yet growing body of scientific articles related to tropical peatlands has recently been published, including from previously overlooked regions such as the Amazonian and Congo basins. The recent recognition of tropical peatlands as valuable ecosystems because of the organic carbon they accumulate in their water-saturated soils has occurred after most of them have been drained and degraded in Southeast Asia. Under disturbed conditions, their natural carbon storage function is shifted to an additional carbon source to the atmosphere. Understanding the effect of land-use change and management practices on peatlands can shed light on the driving variables that influence carbon emissions and can model the magnitude of emissions in future degraded peatlands. This is of primary importance as other peatland-covered regions in the tropics are at risk of land-use and land-cover changes. A systematic review that synthesizes the general understanding of tropical peatland carbon dynamics based on the published literature is much needed to guide future research directions on this topic. Moreover, previous studies of biogeochemical cycling in tropical peatlands have largely focused on terrestrial stocks and fluxes with little attention given to document lateral and downstream aquatic export through natural and artificial drainage channels. Here, we present a systematic review protocol to describe terrestrial and aquatic carbon dynamics in tropical peatlands and identify the influence of land-use change on carbon exchange. We described a set of literature search and screening steps that lay the groundwork for a future synthesis on tropical peatlands carbon cycling. Such an evidence-based synthesis using a systematic review approach will help provide the research community and policymakers with consistent science-based guidelines to set and monitor emissions reduction targets as part of the forestry and land-use sector.

Response of Peatland CO2 and CH4 Fluxes to Experimental Warming and the Carbon Balance

Abstract:The function of peatlands as a large carbon (C) reservoir results from the net C uptake under cold, wet, and acid environments. However, in the context of global warming, the balance between C input and release is expected to change, which may further alter the C sink of peatlands. To examine the response to climate warming of a temperate Sphagnum peatland which has been invaded by vascular plants, a mesocosm experiment was conducted with open top chambers (OTCs) to simulate a moderate temperature increase. Gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and methane (CH 4 ) emissions were monitored for 2 years. The CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes were modeled by relating to abiotic and biotic factors, including temperature, water table depth (WTD), and vegetation, in order to calculate the annual C budget. Results showed that the annual cumulated GPP was significantly enhanced by the simulated warming (−602 compared to −501 gC m −2 yr −1 in OTC and control plots, respectively), mainly due to the increase of graminoid biomass by warming, while experimental warming had no significant effect on the annual ER and CH 4 emissions (an output of 615 and 500 gC m −2 yr −1 for ER; 21 and 16 gC m −2 yr −1 for CH 4 emissions in OTC and control plots, respectively). The annual NEE and C budget were not affected by the short-term experimental warming. The mesocosms under both treatments acted as a gaseous C source with 34 and 14 gC m −2 yr −1 output under OTC and control treatment, respectively. This C source was driven by the strong net carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) release during a low WTD period in summer, as CH 4 emissions only accounted for 0.9–2.2% of the total C fluxes. Our study identified the effect of moderate warming on the C fluxes, even on a short-term basis. Also, our findings highlighted that the response of C fluxes to warming largely depends on the WTD and vegetation composition. Thus, long-term monitoring of hydrology and vegetation change under climate warming is essential to examine their interactions in determining the C fluxes in peatlands.

High Carbon Dioxide Uptake By Subtropical Forest Ecosystems In The East Asian Monsoon Region

Abstract:Temperate- and high-latitude forests have been shown to contribute a carbon sink in the Northern Hemisphere, but fewer studies have addressed the carbon balance of the subtropical forests. In the present study, we integrated eddy covariance observations established in the 1990s and 2000s to show that East Asian monsoon subtropical forests between 20 degrees N and 40 degrees N represent an average net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of 362 +/- 39 g C m(-2) yr(-1) (mean +/- 1 SE). This average forest NEP value is higher than that of Asian tropical and temperate forests and is also higher than that of forests at the same latitudes in Europe-Africa and North America. East Asian monsoon subtropical forests have comparable NEP to that of subtropical forests of the southeastern United States and intensively managed Western European forests. The total NEP of East Asian monsoon subtropical forests was estimated to be 0.72 +/- 0.08 Pg C yr(-1), which accounts for 8% of the global forest NEP. This result indicates that the role of subtropical forests in the current global carbon cycle cannot be ignored and that the regional distributions of the Northern Hemisphere's terrestrial carbon sinks are needed to be reevaluated. The young stand ages and high nitrogen deposition, coupled with sufficient and synchronous water and heat availability, may be the primary reasons for the high NEP of this region, and further studies are needed to quantify the contribution of each underlying factor.

Abstract:Abstract Northern peatlands have been a persistent net sink of atmospheric carbon (C) due to the greater rates of gross primary production (GPP) compared to ecosystem respiration (ER). Global warming has raised concerns about the C sink strength of northern environments. In the vast peatlands of the Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) region of Canada, warming‐induced changes in sea ice dynamics over the Bay have altered its advective influence on the adjacent lowlands. Despite our knowledge of the short‐term C exchange in these peatlands, there remain uncertainties in the long‐term combined response of GPP and ER to climate change. In this study, the satellite‐data‐driven Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model was employed to investigate the response of peatland GPP, ER, and net ecosystem exchange to temperature and moisture changes. The results show contrasting net CO 2 exchange at the two peatland sites over the last 20 years, with the fen acting as a net C source (+24 g C m −2 ) to the atmosphere and the bog serving as a net C sink (−130 g C m −2 ). There is ample evidence that a warmer and wetter climate enhanced GPP more than ER, while cooler temperatures weakened the peatland net C sink, regardless of the moisture conditions. Additionally, the advective influence of Hudson Bay on the lowlands produced markedly different C dynamics between offshore and onshore winds, with higher respiration rates (12%–26%) during offshore winds. We discuss the implications for peatland C balance under more frequent onshore winds in the region.

Abstract:Drainage of water from North Carolina coastal pocosin peatlands increases CO2 losses (a) as measured by eddy covariance, (b) results in annual losses of 21 metric tons of CO2 per hectare each year (c). When greenhouse gas (GHG) losses are assessed on drained peatlands across the SE USA millions of tons of CO2 are added to atmosphere each year through increased oxidation of peat or more rapidly through increased fire frequency (d), often with deep peat fires releasing catastrophic volumes of GHG. Rewetting of drained fallow peatlands is thus essential if the United States is to meet its GHG emission goals by 2050. Peatlands drained for agriculture or forestry are susceptible to the rapid release of greenhouse gases (GHGs) through enhanced microbial decomposition and increased frequency of deep peat fires. We present evidence that rewetting drained subtropical wooded peatlands (STWPs) along the southeastern USA coast, primarily pocosin bogs, could prevent significant carbon (C) losses. To quantify GHG emissions and storage from drained and rewetted pocosin we used eddy covariance techniques, the first such estimates that have been applied to this major bog type, on a private drained (PD) site supplemented by static chamber measurements at PD and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Net ecosystem exchange measurements showed that the loss was 21.2 Mg CO2 ha−1 year−1 (1 Mg = 106 g) in the drained pocosin. Under a rewetted scenario, where the annual mean water table depth (WTD) decreased from 60 to 30 cm, the C loss was projected to fall to 2 Mg CO2 ha−1 year−1, a 94% reduction. If the WTD was 20 cm, the peatlands became a net carbon sink (−3.3 Mg CO2 ha−1 year−1). Hence, net C reductions could reach 24.5 Mg CO2 ha−1 year−1, and when scaled up to the 4000 ha PD site nearly 100,000 Mg CO2 year−1 of creditable C could be amassed. We conservatively estimate among the 0.75 million ha of southeastern STWPs, between 450 and 770 km2 could be rewet, reducing annual GHG emissions by 0.96–1.6 Tg (1 Tg = 1012 g) of CO2, through suppressed microbial decomposition and 1.7–2.8 Tg via fire prevention, respectively. Despite covering <0.01% of US land area, rewetting drained pocosin can potentially provide 2.4% of the annual CO2 nationwide reduction target of 0.18 Pg (1 Pg = 1015 g). Suggesting pocosin restoration can contribute disproportionately to the US goal of achieving net‐zero emission by 2050.

Abstract:Remodeling of the distribution of gap junctions is an important feature of anatomic substrates of arrhythmias in patients with healed myocardial infarcts. Mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood but probably involve changes in gap junction protein (connexin) synthesis, assembly into channels, and degradation. The half-life of the principal cardiac gap junction protein, connexin43 (Cx43), is only 1.5 to 2 hours in primary cultures of neonatal myocytes, but it is unknown whether rapid turnover of Cx43 occurs in the adult heart or is unique to disaggregated neonatal myocytes that are actively reestablishing connections in vitro. To characterize connexin turnover dynamics in the adult heart and to elucidate its potential role in remodeling of gap junctions, we measured Cx43 turnover kinetics and characterized the proteolytic pathways involved in Cx43 degradation in isolated perfused adult rat hearts. Hearts were labeled for 40 minutes with Krebs-Henseleit buffer containing [35S]methionine, and then chase perfusions were performed with nonradioactive buffer for 0, 60, 120, and 240 minutes. Quantitative immunoprecipitation assays of Cx43 radioactivity in 4 hearts at each time point yielded a monoexponential decay curve indicating a Cx43 half-life of 1.3 hours. Proteolytic pathways responsible for Cx43 degradation were elucidated by perfusing isolated rat hearts for 4 hours with specific inhibitors of either lysosomal or proteasomal proteolysis. Immunoblot analysis demonstrated significant increases ( approximately 30%) in Cx43 content in hearts perfused with either lysosomal or proteasomal pathway inhibitors. Most of the Cx43 in hearts perfused with lysosomal inhibitors consisted of phosphorylated isoforms, whereas nonphosphorylated Cx43 accumulated selectively in hearts perfused with a specific proteasomal inhibitor. These results indicate that Cx43 turns over rapidly in the adult heart and is degraded by multiple proteolytic pathways. Regulation of Cx43 degradation could play an important role in gap junction remodeling in response to cardiac injury.
