Abstract:B cells in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) usually express the CD5 antigen, which appears to participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune phenomena. However, 7-20% of B-CLL patients are CD5-. The aim of this study was to assess whether CD5 expression could be used as a discriminating factor for two subgroups of B-CLL. Twenty-nine CD5- B-CLL patients were compared in terms of clinico-biological characteristics and survival with a control group of 29 sex- and age-matched, consecutive CD5+ B-CLL subjects. B-CLL was considered to be CD5- when less than 5% of mononuclear cells expressed CD5 after subtraction of the number of T cells. Splenomegaly, lymph node involvement, and haemolytic anemia were found in CD5+ patients in a significantly higher proportion than in their CD5- counterparts, who presented with an earlier stage of disease. CD5- patients had a median survival of 97.2 (22-130) months, exceeding CD5+ subjects significantly [84.0 (19-120) months, p = 0.0025]. CD5- patients seemingly present with milder disease and have a favourable prognosis compared with the vast majority of B-CLL patients who express CD5.
Ground-based measurements of column-averaged carbon dioxide molar mixing ratios in a peatland fire-prone area of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract:Tropical peatlands in Indonesia have been disturbed over decades and are a source of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by peat respiration and peatland fire. With a portable solar spectrometer, we have performed measurements of column-averaged CO2 dry-air molar mixing ratios, XCO2, in Palangka Raya, Indonesia, and quantify the emission dynamics of the peatland with use of the data for weather, fire hotspot, ground water table, local airport operation visibility and weather radar images. Total emission of CO2 from surface and underground peat fires as well as from peatland ecosystem is evaluated by day-to-day variability of XCO2. We found that the peatland fire and the net ecosystem CO2 exchange contributed with the same order of magnitude to the CO2 emission during the non-El Niño Southern Oscillation year of July 2014-August 2015.
Impact of forest plantation on methane emissions from tropical peatland

Abstract:Tropical peatlands are a known source of methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, but their contribution to atmospheric CH4 is poorly constrained. Since the 1980s, extensive areas of the peatlands in Southeast Asia have experienced land‐cover change to small‐holder agriculture and forest plantations. This land–cover change generally involves lowering of groundwater level (GWL), as well as modification of vegetation type, both of which potentially influence CH4 emissions. We measured CH4 exchanges at the landscape scale using eddy covariance towers over two land‐cover types in tropical peatland in Sumatra, Indonesia: (1) a natural forest, and (2) an Acacia crassicarpa plantation. Annual CH4 exchanges over the natural forest (9.1±0.9 g CH4 m‐2 year‐1) were around twice as high as those of the Acacia plantation (4.7±1.5 g CH4 m‐2 year‐1). Results highlight that tropical peatlands are significant CH4 sources, and probably have a greater impact on global atmospheric CH4 concentrations than previously thought. Observations showed a clear diurnal variation in CH4 exchange over the natural forest where the GWL was higher than 40 cm below the ground surface. The diurnal variation in CH4 exchanges was strongly correlated with associated changes in the canopy conductance to water vapor, photosynthetic photon flux density, vapor pressure deficit, and air temperature. Absence of a comparable diurnal pattern in CH4 exchange over the Acacia plantation may be the result of the GWL being consistently below the root zone. Our results, which are among the first eddy covariance CH4 exchange data reported for any tropical peatland, should help to reduce the uncertainty in the estimation of CH4 emissions from a globally important ecosystem, provide a more complete estimate of the impact of land‐cover change on tropical peat, and develop science‐based peatland management practices that help to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Abstract:Land use change in tropical peat soil is thought to cause intense greenhouse gas emissions by enhancing organic matter decomposition. Although microbes in peat soil play key roles in the emission of greenhouse gases, their characteristics remain unknown. This study was conducted to clarify the effect of land use change (drainage, forest fire and agricultural land use) on the control of gas emission factors with respect to the characteristics of microbes in tropical peat soils. Field observations were carried out in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, from July 2009 to March 2011. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes in tropical peat soils were measured in an undrained natural forest, a drained forest, two burned forests and four croplands. A fumigation-extraction method was used to measure the soil microbial biomass to evaluate the relationships among the soluble organic carbon (SOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) and the CO2 and N2O fluxes in peat soils. Regarding the relationships between weekly precipitation and N2O emission, positive relationships were found in both the forest and cropland soils. However, the slope of the regression line was much higher in the croplands than in the forest soils. The CO2 fluxes in the croplands but not in the forest soils were significantly correlated with both precipitation and N2O fluxes. In contrast, the CO2 fluxes in the forest but not in the croplands were significantly correlated with the MBC and the MBC/SOC ratio. The SOC did not show any relationship with the CO2 fluxes but showed a positive relationship with the MBN and a negative linear relationship with the nitrate (NO3–) concentration. In addition, the MBN showed a negative relationship with most of the probable numbers of ammonium oxidizers. These results indicate that the agricultural land use of tropical peat soils varied the factors controlling greenhouse gas emissions through microbial activities. Therefore, the microbial biomass may be a key factor in controlling CO2 fluxes in forest soils but not in agricultural peat soils. However, precipitation may be a key factor in agricultural peat soils but not in forest soils.

Abstract:Conservation of undrained tropical peatland ecosystems is critical for climate change mitigation as they store a tremendous amount of soil carbon that is preserved under anoxic water-logged conditions. Unfortunately, there are too few measurements of carbon fluxes from these ecosystems to estimate the climate change mitigation potential from such conservation efforts. Here, we measured carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) fluxes as well as fluvial organic carbon export over the peat swamp forest within an undrained tropical peatland landscape in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Our measurements throughout one year (Oct 2022–Sep 2023) showed that despite its water-logged condition, peat and water overlying the swamp forest on average emits 11.02 ± 0.49 MgCO 2 ha −1 yr −1 of CO 2 and 0.58 ± 0.04 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 of CH 4 . Further, the fluvial organic carbon export contributes to additional carbon loss of 1.68 ± 0.06 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 . Our results help improve the accuracy of carbon accounting from undrained tropical peatlands, where we estimated a total carbon loss of 13.28 ± 0.50 MgCO 2 e ha −1 yr −1 . Nevertheless, the total carbon loss reported from our sites is about half than what is reported from the drained peatland landscapes in the region and resulted in a larger onsite carbon sink potential estimate compared to other undrained peat swamp forests. Together, these findings indicate that conserving the remaining undrained peatland ecosystems in Indonesia from drainage and degradation is a promising natural climate solution strategy that avoids significant carbon emissions.

Carbon accumulation of tropical peatlands over millennia: a modeling approach

Abstract:Tropical peatlands cover an estimated 440,000 km2 (~10% of global peatland area) and are significant in the global carbon cycle by storing about 40-90 Gt C in peat. Over the past several decades, tropical peatlands have experienced high rates of deforestation and conversion, which is often associated with lowering the water table and peat burning, releasing large amounts of carbon stored in peat to the atmosphere. We present the first model of long-term carbon accumulation in tropical peatlands by modifying the Holocene Peat Model (HPM), which has been successfully applied to northern temperate peatlands. Tropical HPM (HPMTrop) is a one-dimensional, nonlinear, dynamic model with a monthly time step that simulates peat mass remaining in annual peat cohorts over millennia as a balance between monthly vegetation inputs (litter) and monthly decomposition. Key model parameters were based on published data on vegetation characteristics, including net primary production partitioned into leaves, wood, and roots; and initial litter decomposition rates. HPMTrop outputs are generally consistent with field observations from Indonesia. Simulated long-term carbon accumulation rates for 11,000-year-old inland, and 5000-year-old coastal peatlands were about 0.3 and 0.59 Mg C ha(-1) yr(-1), and the resulting peat carbon stocks at the end of the 11,000-year and 5000-year simulations were 3300 and 2900 Mg C ha(-1), respectively. The simulated carbon loss caused by coastal peat swamp forest conversion into oil palm plantation with periodic burning was 1400 Mg C ha(-1) over 100 years, which is equivalent to ~2900 years of C accumulation in a hectare of coastal peatlands.

Abstract:Habitat evolution of a peat swamp forest and belowground carbon storage was examined in a coastal lowland along the eastern coast of Central Sumatra, Indonesia. Boring surveys using a hand-operated peat sampler for 32 sites and radiocarbon dating for 29 samples revealed that the peat swamp forest had begun formation by 6500 cal BP and expanded rapidly between 6500 and 5000 cal BP and between 4000 and 2000 cal BP to nearly the present distribution area. The thickness of the peat layer formed under the peat swamp forest reached approximately 4 m, even in the margin of the peat dome, and more than 9 m in the center. Stored carbon per unit volume of the peat layer was estimated to be between 30 and 44 kg C m−3 in the margin of the peat dome and approximately 26 kg C m−3 in the center, which was less than the general carbon values of the mangrove peat. The relatively higher amount of stored carbon per unit volume in the margin was possibly caused by an inflow of allochthonous carbon from flood deposits. Belowground carbon burial rate of the peat layer was calculated as between 31 and 105 g C m−2 years−1 in the peat dome margin and between 27 and 76 g C m−2 years−1 in the center, which were identical to mangrove peat. These data suggest that peat swamp forests have played a significant role as places for carbon sequestration belowground as well as mangrove forest with mangrove peat.

Strong climate mitigation potential of rewetting oil palm plantations on tropical peatlands

Abstract:For decades, tropical peatlands in Indonesia have been deforested and converted to other land uses, mainly oil palm plantations which now cover one-fourth of the degraded peatland area. Given that the capacity for peatland ecosystems to store carbon depends largely on hydrology, there is a growing interest in rewetting degraded peatlands to shift them back to a carbon sink. Recent estimates suggest that peatland rewetting may contribute up to 13 % of Indonesia's total mitigation potential from natural climate solutions. In this study, we measured CO2 and CH4 fluxes, soil temperature, and water table level (WTL) for drained oil palm plantations, rewetted oil palm plantations, and secondary forests located in the Mempawah and Kubu Raya Regencies of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. We found that peatland rewetting significantly reduced peat CO2 emissions, though CH4 uptake was not significantly different in rewetted peatland compared to drained peatland. Rewetting drained peatlands on oil palm plantations reduced heterotrophic respiration by 34 % and total respiration by 20 %. Our results suggest that rewetting drained oil palm plantations will not achieve low CO2 emissions as observed in secondary forests due to differences in vegetation or land management. However, extrapolating our results to the areas of degraded oil palm plantations in West Kalimantan suggests that successful peatland rewetting could still reduce emissions by 3.9 MtCO2 yr-1. This result confirms that rewetting oil palm plantations in tropical peatlands is an effective natural climate solution for achieving national emission reduction targets.

Abstract:Mangrove ecosystems exhibit significant carbon storage and sequestration. Its capacity to store and sequester significant amounts of carbon makes this ecosystem very important for climate change mitigation. Indonesia, owing to the largest mangrove cover in the world, has approximately 3.14 PgC stored in the mangroves, or about 33% of all carbon stored in coastal ecosystems globally. Unfortunately, our comprehensive understanding of carbon flux is hampered by the incomplete repertoire of field measurement data, especially from mangrove ecosystem-rich regions such as Indonesia and Asia Pacific. This study fills the gap in greenhouse gases (GHGs) flux studies in mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia by quantifying the soil CO 2 and CH 4 fluxes for different land use types in mangrove ecosystems, i.e., secondary mangrove (SM), restored mangrove (RM), pond embankment (PE) and active aquaculture pond (AP). Environmental parameters such as soil pore salinity, soil pore water pH, soil temperature, air temperature, air humidity and rainfall are also measured.

Abstract:Abstract Conversion of tropical peat swamp forest to drainage-based agriculture alters greenhouse gas (GHG) production, but the magnitude of these changes remains highly uncertain. Current emissions factors for oil palm grown on drained peat do not account for temporal variation over the plantation cycle and only consider CO 2 emissions. Here, we present direct measurements of GHGs emitted during the conversion from peat swamp forest to oil palm plantation, accounting for CH 4 and N 2 O as well as CO 2 . Our results demonstrate that emissions factors for converted peat swamp forest is in the range 70–117 t CO 2 eq ha −1 yr −1 (95% confidence interval, CI), with CO 2 and N 2 O responsible for ca. 60 and ca. 40% of this value, respectively. These GHG emissions suggest that conversion of Southeast Asian peat swamp forest is contributing between 16.6 and 27.9% (95% CI) of combined total national GHG emissions from Malaysia and Indonesia or 0.44 and 0.74% (95% CI) of annual global emissions.

Evaluation on the decomposability of tropical forest peat soils after conversion to an oil palm plantation

Abstract:To understand the variations in the decomposability of tropical peat soil following deforestation for an oil palm plantation, a field incubation experiment was conducted in Sarawak, Malaysia. Peat soils collected from three types of primary forest, namely Mixed Peat Swamp (MPS; Gonystylus-Dactylocladus-Neoscrotechinia association), Alan Batu (ABt; Shorea albida-Gonstylus-Strenonurus association), and Alan Bunga (ABg; Shorea albida association), were packed in polyvinyl chloride pipes and installed in an oil palm plantation. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes from soil were monthly measured for 3years. Environmental variables including soil temperature, soil moisture content, and groundwater table were also monitored. The pH, loss on ignition, and total carbon (C) content were similar among the three soils, while total N content was larger in the MPS than in the ABg soils. Based on 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, C composition of the MPS and ABg soils was characterized by the largest proportion of C present as alkyl C and O-alkyl C, respectively. The C composition of the ABt soil was intermediate between the MPS and ABg soils. The CO2 fluxes from the three soils ranged from 78 to 625mgCm-2h-1 with a negative correlation to groundwater level. The CH4 fluxes ranged from -67 to 653μgCm-2h-1. Both total CO2 and CH4 fluxes were larger in the order ABg>ABt>MPS (P<0.05). Annual rate of peat decomposition as was estimated from cumulative C loss differed up to 2 times, and the rate constant in exponential decay model was 0.033y-1 for the MPS soil and 0.066y-1 for the ABg soil. The field incubation results of the three forest peat soils seem to reflect the difference in the labile organic matter content, represented by polysaccharides.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from agricultural activities contribute significantly to global warming. Understanding the factors influencing N 2 O emissions is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies. This review assesses N 2 O emissions from various crops cultivated in tropical mineral and peatland soils, providing insights into the impact of land use, fertilization practices and rainfall on N 2 O fluxes. Field measurements of N 2 O fluxes were conducted in agricultural fields growing corn, peanuts, and cassava in Bogor Regency, West Java Province, as well as in peatland areas with Acacia plantations and natural primary forests in Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province. The study assesses the total N 2 O fluxes for each crop and land type, revealing significant variations in N 2 O emissions among different crops and land uses. Peatland areas exhibit higher emissions compared to mineral soils, emphasizing the need for targeted mitigation measures in these ecosystems. The findings highlight the importance of considering the type and age of land use when evaluating N 2 O emissions. Land management practices, such as fertilizer use and soil disturbance, emerge as critical factors affecting N 2 O emissions. Improper fertilizer application and excessive soil disturbance can lead to increased N 2 O emissions, underscoring the necessity for careful N fertilizer management and conservation tillage techniques.
Tropical peat fire emissions: 2019 field measurements in Sumatra and Borneo and synthesis with previous studies

Abstract:Abstract. Peat fires in Southeast Asia are a major source of trace gases and particles to the regional-global atmosphere that influence atmospheric chemistry, climate, and air quality. During the November 2015 record-high Ocean Niño Index (ONI, 2.6) our mobile smoke sampling team made the first, or rare, field measurements of numerous trace gases, aerosol optical properties, and aerosol chemistry and mass emissions for fires burning only peat in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan (on the island of Borneo). The measurements used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), whole air sampling (WAS), photoacoustic extinctiometers (PAX, 401 and 870 nm), and detailed off-line analyses of particulate matter (PM) collected on filters. In September–November 2019 we measured peat fire trace gas emissions again, using WAS only, under El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-neutral conditions (ONI, 0.3) in more remote areas of Central Kalimantan and also the Indonesian provinces of Riau, Jambi, and South Sumatra, all on the island of Sumatra. The 2019 measurements significantly expanded the geographic range and climate conditions sampled. This paper presents the 2019 results and synthesizes them with the previous fieldwork to converge on more robust regional average emission factors (EFs; grams of compound per kilogram of biomass burned) for authentic peat fires. In addition, samples of peat imported from Indonesia were burned in US laboratories, and the EFs and optical properties were characterized in more detail than in the field by a larger suite of instrumentation. We use the improved knowledge of regional emissions based on the expanded field measurements to select the most representative lab data and compute a synthesized, more “chemically complete” set of EFs and aerosol optical properties for tropical peat fires. The modified combustion efficiency (MCE) values for the peat smoke sampled in 2019 were within the range of MCEs sampled in 2015, but with a lower average in 2019 (0.718±0.021, range 0.687–0.736) than 2015 (0.772±0.035, range 0.693–0.835). Averaging the new and older data together suggests an updated MCE for tropical peat fires of ∼0.76. Despite the difference in MCE, the study-average methane emission factors (EF CH4) were remarkably similar across the 2 years probing different regions: 9.42±2.51 g kg−1 in 2019 and 9.51±4.74 g kg−1 in 2015. When parsing the 2019 samples by province, the EFs for non-methane organic gases (NMOGs) were about 3 times higher in South Sumatra and Central Kalimantan than in Jambi and Riau, but the overall 2019 study average was only ∼15 % higher than the 2015 study average. South Sumatra peat fires emitted higher amounts of carbonyl and dimethyl sulfide, suggesting a volcanic or marine influence or effects of agricultural chemicals. The lab and fieldwork taken together provide EFs for 230 trace gases including CO2 (1544 g kg−1), CO (315 g kg−1), and CH4 (9.8 g kg−1). These are significant adjustments to IPCC-recommended EFs, −9 %, +50 %, and −53 %, respectively. We also report EFs for numerous NMOGs, 46 N-containing compounds, and 14 sulfur- or halogen-containing species. The use of high-resolution mass spectrometry in the lab allowed measurement of 82 % more NMOG mass than in the field. Gravimetrically measured EF PM2.5 in the field in 2015 (17.3±5.8 g kg−1) was ∼20 % lower than the average from lab studies (22.4±10.4 g kg−1), perhaps due to higher field temperatures. Taken together the lab and field data show that the single-scattering albedo (SSA) was largely independent of wavelength and MCE in the visible (∼0.998), but lower at low MCE at 401 and 405 nm with a value of 0.958 at the study-average MCE. The absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) at the average MCE was 5.7. By far the largest PM component was weakly absorbing insoluble organic carbon.

Abstract:Southeast Asian peatlands, along with their various important ecosystem services, are mainly distributed in the coastal areas of Sumatra and Borneo. These ecosystems are threatened by coastal development, global warming and sea level rise (SLR). Despite receiving growing attention for their biodiversity and as massive carbon stores, there is still a lack of knowledge on how they initiated and evolved over time, and how they responded to past environmental change, that is, precipitation, sea level and early anthropogenic activities. To improve our understanding thereof, we conducted multi-proxy paleoecological studies in the Kampar Peninsula and Katingan peatlands in the coastal area of Riau and Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The results indicate that the initiation timing and environment of both peatlands are very distinct, suggesting that peat could form under various vegetation as soon as there is sufficient moisture to limit organic matter decomposition. The past dynamics of both peatlands were mainly attributable to natural drivers, while anthropogenic activities were hardly relevant. Changes in precipitation and sea level led to shifts in peat swamp forest vegetation, peat accumulation rates and fire regimes at both sites. We infer that the simultaneous occurrence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and SLR resulted in synergistic effects which led to the occurrence of severe fires in a pristine coastal peatland ecosystem; however, it did not interrupt peat accretion. In the future, SLR, combined with the projected increase in frequency and intensity of ENSO, can potentially amplify the negative effects of anthropogenic peatland fires. This prospectively stimulates massive carbon release, thus could, in turn, contribute to worsening the global climate crisis especially once an as yet unknown threshold is crossed and peat accretion is halted, that is, peatlands lose their carbon sink function. Given the current rapid SLR, coastal peatland managements should start develop fire risk reduction or mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Toba highlands is unique and covers a large area. Peat plays an important role as a carbon sink, and is currently utilized for agricultural purposes, use as firewood, and left to degrade. The use of peatlands will impact the maturity of peat, and the emission of carbon dioxides and other gases caused by the decomposition process of microbes. A brief transformation of organic carbon from peat into carbon dioxide negatively impacts the environment, especially in increasing the greenhouse gas emissions. C-organic and C-microbial biomass was observed in peatlands of the Toba Highlands in Humbang Hasundutan, employing the Walkey and Black method, and fumigation and extraction methods to calculate the microbial population involved in the decomposition process or called C-microbial biomass. Moreover, descriptive method were used to map their distribution in the peat areas. The results showed that the highest C-organic was found in barren land at 22.05% and soil C-microbial biomass population was 3.24 μg g −1 soil, whereas the least C-Organic was found in peatland transferred to coffee fields, at 5.23% while the least C-microbial biomass was in peatland transferred to onion fields at 0.28 μg g −1 soil. There was a relatively small amount of organic matter and C-microbial biomass in paddy field, shallots, and grasses. Therefore, the results indicated that converting peatland into agricultural land would likely change the value of organic matter and C-biomass population.
Potential for low-emissions oil palm production in Indonesia: insights from spatiotemporal dynamics

Abstract:Rising global demand for palm oil has created environmental pressures related to deforestation, burning, and peat exploitation, which in turn drives increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. GHG emissions in oil palm (OP) production are known to vary spatially. However, temporal changes across contrasting management and soil types, are less well studied. This paper quantifies spatiotemporal GHG emissions across contrasting regions, management types, and soil types for the period 1990 to 2019 to assess the potential for reducing emission. The study focusses on Indonesia, as the biggest producer of OP, and in particular on the North Sumatra and Riau provinces, where OP is intensively produced. GHG inventories in 5-year time steps were constructed to investigate the change in drivers of emissions using spatial data, resampled to a 500-m grid. Total GHG emissions were found to have increased in both regions due to expanding OP production. However, results show a reduction in emissions flux from 1.98 to 1.15 Ton Ceq. ha-1 year-1 in North Sumatra and 9.63 to 2.67 Ton Ceq. ha-1 year-1 in Riau over the study period. This reduced flux was linked to the decreased deforestation and burning activities, together with increased biomass increment from lower carbon stock area conversion to OP. In both provinces, smallholder plantations emitted fewer emissions than industrial ones, and production on organic soils resulted in consistently higher emissions than on mineral soils. In North Sumatra, emissions under all management and soil types were found to decrease. In Riau, however, GHG emissions on organic soils regardless of management types, remained high. Our findings emphasise that potential for low-emissions OP production is attainable by reducing emissions per unit area through an improved understanding of GHG emissions spatiotemporal variability and their drivers. These contribute to reinforcing ongoing government regulations and guiding the industry towards low-emission OP productions.

Abstract:Peatlands play an important role as carbon pools, storing a third of the world's soil carbon. However, peatlands in Southeast Asia have suffered from depletion due to economic pressure and the demand for natural resources, often caused by land use changes and fires. Usually, land preparation requires drainage and fires, resulting in major greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into the atmosphere. In this work, we propose a general equation to estimate GHG emissions from fires on peatlands. The contribution of each parameter to the variance of the estimated GHG emissions was also evaluated. We used Monte Carlo simulation, meta‐analyses, and an analytical expression of variance. GHG emissions of a single fire episode were estimated at 842 Mg ha−1 CO2 eq. with a standard deviation of 466 Mg ha−1 CO2 eq. The parameter contributing most to variance was the depth of burn, at 94.2%, followed by bulk density, at 5.5%, and emission factors, at 0.3%. Our estimated GHG emissions were close to the amount estimated from the default values provided by the IPCC, strengthening confidence in the IPCC methodology. When the depth of burn was assessed by remote sensing, the parameter that most contributed to variance became the fire‐damaged area, followed by the depth of burn. The contribution of each parameter to variance, as estimated in this study, made it possible to prioritize the effort in uncertainty reduction. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and an analytical expression of variance could be a promising way of obtaining more reliable confidence intervals.

Refining greenhouse gas emission factors for Indonesian peatlands and mangroves to meet ambitious climate targets

Abstract:For countries' emission-reduction efforts under the Paris Agreement to be effective, baseline emission/removals levels and reporting must be as transparent and accurate as possible. For Indonesia, which holds among the largest area of tropical peatlands and mangrove forest in the world, it is particularly important for these high-carbon ecosystems to produce high-accuracy greenhouse gas inventory and to improve national forest reference emissions level/forest reference level. Here, we highlight the opportunity for refining greenhouse gas emission factors (EF) of peatlands and mangroves and describe scientific challenges to support climate policy processes in Indonesia, where 55 to 59% of national emission reduction targets by 2030 depend on mitigation in Forestry and Other Land Use. Based on the stock-difference and flux change approaches, we examine higher-tier EF for drained and rewetted peatland, peatland fires, mangrove conversions, and mangrove on peatland to improve future greenhouse gas flux reporting in Indonesia. We suggest that these refinements will be essential to support Indonesia in achieving Forest and Other Land Use net sink by 2030 and net zero emissions targets by 2060 or earlier.

Abstract:Quantification of CO2 flux from peat has been studied with various methods of measurement and data analysis. Several studies have applied regression analysis to assess carbon flux from tropical peatland as a function of groundwater level. Such an analysis simplified the complex nature of peat decomposition, which involved microbial activities. The study was conducted at Buatan Village, Siak Indrapura Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia. Soil sampling was done every month for a year observation, from July 2018 to June 2019. This study aimed to comprehend CO2 production from the respiration of heterotrophic components (Rh-CO2) as a function of soil properties determined by soil pH, N-NH4, N-NO3, available P, exchangeable-K, C-organic acids, and environmental factors that are determined by soil water content, and groundwater level. The study applied trenching experimentation to quantify Rh-CO2 flux by first removing plant roots from the trenching plot. The CO2 flux and groundwater level were measured for five consecutive days each month for a one-year period. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine the main determinant for the Rh-CO2 flux. The results showed that seasonal fluctuation of Rh-CO2 flux, negatively correlated with available P (p = 0.037), and positively (p = 0.018) with C-substrate as C-organic acids but not with either of the speciated ones as acetic, lactic, citric, malic, nor oxalic acids. More specifically, the C-organic acids were found as the main determinant factor (p = 0.039) affecting the Rh-CO2 flux.
