Abstract:Objective: Computational modeling has been shown to be a useful tool for simulating representative motorsport impacts and analyzing data for relative injury risk assessment. Previous studies have used computational modeling to analyze the probability of injury in specific regions of a 50th percentile male driver. However, NASCAR drivers can represent a large range in terms of size and female drivers are becoming increasingly more common in the sport. Additionally, motorsport helmets can be outfitted with external attachments, or enhanced helmet systems (EHS), whose effect is unknown relative to head and neck kinematics. The current study expands on this previous work by incorporating the F05-OS and M95-OS into the motorsport environment in order to determine correlations between metrics and factors such as PDOF, resultant ΔV occupant size, and EHS. Methods: A multi-step computational process was used to integrate the Global Human Body Models Consortium family of simplified occupant models into a motorsport environment. This family included the 5th percentile female (F05-OS), 50th percentile male (M50-OS), and 95th percentile male (M95-OS), which provide a representative range for the size and sex of drivers seen in NASCAR's racing series'. A series of 45 representative impacts, developed from real-world crash data, and set of observed on-track severe impacts were conducted with these models. These impacts were run in triplicate for three helmet configurations: bare helmet, helmet with visor, helmet with visor and camera. This resulted in 450 total simulations. A paired t-test was initially performed as an exploratory analysis to study the effect of helmet configuration on 10 head and neck injury metrics. A mixed-effects model with unstructured covariance matrix was then utilized to correlate the effect between five independent variables (resultant ΔV, body size, helmet configuration, impact quadrant, and steering wheel position) and a selection of 25 metrics. All simulations were conducted in LS-Dyna R. 9.1. Results: Risk estimates from the M50-OS with bare helmet were used as reference values to determine the effect of body size and helmet configuration. The paired t-test found significance for helmet configuration in select head-neck metrics, but the relative increase in these metrics was low and not likely to increase injury risk. The mixed-effects model analyzed statistical relationships across multiple types of variables. Within the mixed-effects model, no significance was found between helmet configuration and metrics. The greatest effect was found from resultant ΔV, body size, and impact quadrant. Conclusions: Overall, smaller drivers showed statistically significant reductions in injury metrics, while larger drivers showed statistically significant increases. Lateral impacts showed the greatest effect on neck metrics and, on average, showed decreases for head metrics related to linear acceleration and increases for head metrics related to angular velocity. HBM parametric studies such as this may provide an avenue to assist injury detection for motorsport incidents, improve triage effectiveness, and assist in the development of safety standards.

Abstract:Despite modern surgical methods and antibiotics, the mortality of the intraabdominal abscess remains high. The patients are often debilitated and many have undergone recent major surgery. Percutaneous catheter drainage of abdominal abscess has proven to be a valuable alternative to surgical drainage [1 ] and has been used in patients too ill to undergo a surgical drainage [2]. We recently drained abdominal abscesses in three patients at the bedside whose unstable status prohibited even transfer to the radiology department.

Abstract:Aim. We hypothesized that normal saline (NS) may have more deleterious effects compared with lactated ringer (LR) in kidney transplant recipients because of the higher risk of acidosis and higher levels of serum potassium. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the safety of LR if used during a renal transplant. Methods. Adults undergoing kidney transplantations were enrolled in a double-blinded randomized prospective clinical trial. They were divided into two groups in order to receive NS and LR infusion as intraoperative IV fluid replacement therapy. Results. There was a significant difference in the serum potassium level (p = .000) and the PH (p = .007) between the two groups at the end of transplantations. Two patients in the LR group lost their kidneys due to vascular graft thrombosis. In other words, hyperkalemia and acidosis occurred more frequently in the NS group while thrombotic events may be of concern in the LR group. Conclusion. Compared with NS, LR infusion may lead to a lower serum potassium level and a lower risk of acidosis, while there is major concern of the hypercoagulable state in these patients.

Abstract:Numerical methods are often a robust way to predict how external mechanical loads affect individual biological structures. Computational models of biological systems have been developed over the years, reaching high levels of detail, complexity, and precision. In this study, two cases were analysed, differing in the airbag operation; in the first, the airbag was normally activated, and in the second case, the airbag was disabled. We analysed a model of a disabled person without a left leg who steers a vehicle using a specialized knob on the steering wheel. In both cases, a head-on collision between a car moving at an initial speed of 50 km/h and a rigid obstacle was analysed. We concluded that the activated airbag for a person with disabilities reduces the effects of asymmetries in the positioning of the belts and body support points. Moreover, all the biomechanical parameters, analysed on the 50th percentile dummy, i.e., HIC, seat belt contact force and neck injury criterion (Nij) support the use of an airbag. The resulting accelerations, measured in the head of the dummy, were induced into a finite element head model (YEAHM) to kinematically drive the head and simulate both accidents, with and without the airbag. In the latter, the subsequent head injury prediction revealed a form of contrecoup injury, more specifically cerebral contusion based on the intracranial pressure levels that were achieved. Therefore, based on the in-depth investigation, a frontal airbag can significantly lower the possibility of injuries for disabled drivers, including cerebral contusions.
BMI and Risk of Serious Upper Body Injury Following Motor Vehicle Crashes: Concordance of Real-World and Computer-Simulated Observations

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Men tend to have more upper body mass and fat than women, a physical characteristic that may predispose them to severe motor vehicle crash (MVC) injuries, particularly in certain body regions. This study examined MVC-related regional body injury and its association with the presence of driver obesity using both real-world data and computer crash simulation.METHODS AND FINDINGS:Real-world data were from the 2001 to 2005 National Automotive Sampling System Crashworthiness Data System. A total of 10,941 drivers who were aged 18 years or older involved in frontal collision crashes were eligible for the study. Sex-specific logistic regression models were developed to analyze the associations between MVC injury and the presence of driver obesity. In order to confirm the findings from real-world data, computer models of obese subjects were constructed and crash simulations were performed. According to real-world data, obese men had a substantially higher risk of injury, especially serious injury, to the upper body regions including head, face, thorax, and spine than normal weight men (all p<0.05). A U-shaped relation was found between body mass index (BMI) and serious injury in the abdominal region for both men and women (p<0.05 for both BMI and BMI(2)). In the high-BMI range, men were more likely to be seriously injured than were women for all body regions except the extremities and abdominal region (all p<0.05 for interaction between BMI and sex). The findings from the computer simulation were generally consistent with the real-world results in the present study.CONCLUSIONS:Obese men endured a much higher risk of injury to upper body regions during MVCs. This higher risk may be attributed to differences in body shape, fat distribution, and center of gravity between obese and normal-weight subjects, and between men and women. Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Lower extremity injuries are the most frequent Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) 2 injury for drivers in frontal crashes. The objective was to reconstruct 11 real-world motor vehicle crashes (2 with AIS 2+ distal lower extremity injury and 9 without lower extremity injury) and to analyze the vehicle parameters and driver attributes that affect injury risk.METHODS: Eleven frontal crashes were reconstructed with a finite element simplified vehicle model (SVM) using a semi-automated optimization method. The SVM was tuned to each corresponding vehicle and the Total HUman Model for Safety (THUMS) Ver 4.01 was scaled and positioned in a baseline configuration to mimic the documented precrash driver posture. The event data recorder crash pulse was applied as the boundary condition for each case. Additionally, for the 2 cases with lower extremity injury, 120 simulations to quantify the uncertainty and response variation were performed varying the following parameters using a Latin hypercube design of experiment (DOE): seat track position, seatback angle, steering column angle, steering column position, and D-ring height. Injury metrics implemented within THUMS were calculated from the femur, tibia, and ankle and cross-compared among the 11 baseline cases using tibia index and multiple injury risk functions. Kinetic and kinematic data from the 120-simulation DOE were analyzed and fit to regression models to examine any causal relationship between occupant positioning and lower extremity injury risk.RESULTS: Of the 11 real-world crashes, both cases with lower extremity injuries resulted in elevated tibia axial forces and resultant bending moments, compared to the 9 cases without lower extremity injury. The average tibia index of the 2 cases with distal lower extremity injury (left: 1.79; right: 1.19) was higher than that in the 9 cases without lower extremity injury (left: 1.16, P =.024; right: 0.82, P =.024). An increased risk of AIS 2+ tibia shaft (33.6%), distal tibia and hindfoot (20.0%), as well as ankle malleolar (14.5%) fracture was also observed for the injured compared to the noninjured cases. Rearward seat track position, reclined seat back angle, and reduced seat height were correlated with elevated tibia axial force and increased tibia index, imposing additional lower extremity injury risk.CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a computational framework for assessing lower extremity injuries and elucidates the effect of precrash driver posture on lower extremity injury risk while accounting for vehicle parameters and driver attributes. Results from the study aid in the evaluation of real-world injury data, the understanding of factors contributing to injury risk, and the prevention of lower extremity injuries.

Integrating biomechanics with stakeholder perspectives to inform safety in grassroots dirt track racing

Abstract:Grassroots dirt track racing is a foundational part of motorsports with a high risk of severe injury. This study aimed to gather perspectives and experiences of motorsports drivers surrounding safety and head acceleration events experienced during grassroots dirt track racing to inform strategies to improve driver safety. Thirteen drivers (n=9 who primarily race on dirt tracks; n=4 who primarily race on pavement tracks) with prior dirt track racing experience participated in separate, group-specific focus groups and/or one-on-one interviews where video, simulations of head motion, and head acceleration data were shared. Peak kinematics of laps and crash contact scenarios were recorded, and head perturbations (i.e., deviations in head motion relative to its moving-average trajectory) were quantified for each lap and presented through guided discussion. Responses were summarized using Rapid Assessment Process. Audio recordings and field notes were collected from focus groups and interviews and analyzed across 25 domains. Drivers described dirt track racing as short, fast bursts of racing. Benefits of dirt track racing for driver development were described, including learning car control. Drivers acknowledged risks of racing and expressed confidence in safety equipment but identified areas for improvement. Drivers observed lateral bouncing of the head in video and simulations but recognized that such motions were not noticed while racing. Track conditions and track type were identified as factors influencing head perturbations. Mean PLA (5.5 g) and PRV (3.07 rad/s) of perturbations experienced during racing laps and perturbation frequencies of 5 and 7 perturbations per second were reported. Generally, drivers accurately estimated the head acceleration magnitudes but were surprised by the frequency and maximum magnitude of perturbations. Maximum perturbation magnitudes (26.8 g and 19.0 rad/s) were attributed to hitting a "rut" in the dirt. Drivers described sudden stops, vertical loads due to landing from a large height, and impacts to the vehicle frame as crash events they physically feel the most. Summary statistics for crashes (medians = 7.30 g, 6.94 rad/s) were reported. Typical impact magnitudes measured in other sports (e.g., football) were provided for context. Upon reviewing the biomechanics, drivers were surprised that crash accelerations were relatively low compared to other contact/collision sports. Pavement drivers noted limited safety features in dirt track racing compared to pavement, including rigidity of vehicle frames, seat structure, seatbelt integration, and lack of oversight from sanctioning bodies. Most drivers felt seat inserts and head and neck restraints are important for injury prevention; however, usage of seat inserts and preferred head and neck restraint system differed among drivers. Drivers described their perspectives and experiences related to safety and identified strategies to improve safety in grassroots dirt track racing. Drivers expressed support for future safety research.
An omni-directional model of injury risk in planar crashes with application for autonomous vehicles

Abstract:Objective: Automated driving systems (ADS) are actively being deployed within the driving fleet. ADS are designed to safely navigate roadways, which entails an expectation of encountering varying degrees of potential conflict with other road users. The ADS design and evaluation process benefits from estimating injury severity probabilities for collisions that may occur. Current regression models in the literature are typically bespoke analyses involving targeted principal directions of force (PDOFs) and occupant positions. It is preferable to rely on injury severity models derived from a single source to provide a continuous function of risk for all planar collisions, while also accounting for specific vehicle and occupant characteristics. The novel feature of the proposed models is continuous, parametric injury risk surfaces that encompass the full spectrum of available United States field data.Methods: We used years 2001-2015 of the National Automotive Sampling System, Crashworthiness Data System (NASS-CDS) and years 2017-2019 of the Crash Investigation Sampling System (CISS) to estimate injury risk at the maximum abbreviated injury scale (MAIS) 3 and higher (3+) and 5 and higher (5+) levels for all adult occupants traveling in 2002 or newer passenger vehicles which were less than 10 years old at the time of the crash. The models account for occupant, vehicle, and crash characteristics. Interactions with vulnerable road users (e.g., pedestrian, bicyclist) were not considered.Results: We present statistical models suitable to predict injury in all non-rollover crashes at the maximum MAIS3+ and 5+ levels, and show that these models can be comparable to similar single scenario (e.g., frontal) crash models. We discuss challenges with imputing missing field data, and discuss handling of covariates that may not be known at the time of the crash.Conclusions: Collision severity assessment is a vital component of the ADS design process. We developed a novel injury risk function that can assess occupant injury risks across the spectrum of foreseeable planar collisions. These models can provide insight on potential outcomes of counterfactual simulations, injury risk and crashworthiness considerations for human driven vehicles, and provide an evaluation tool that can be applied in ADS safety impact evaluation.

Abstract:This study developed a framework to generate injury prediction functions in order to evaluate the safety of occupants in traffic accidents, using human body model simulations to analyse the influences of crash severity, occupant stature, occupant posture, and restraint stiffness. The THUMS AM50-O Human Body Model (HBM) was used in a sled test setup. Six influencing parameters were included in injury prediction: impact velocity, occupant stature, Body Mass Index (BMI), torso angle, seating position, and seatbelt restraint force. Impact velocity was found as a significant influencing factor on skull injury, while BMI mainly affected chest injury. Sequential sampling method was used for generation of simulation matrix, and high-order interaction terms were identified. As injury prediction functions, quadratic regressions correlate better with the simulation results than other forms of regressions, the combinations of parameters in which also enhanced the robustness of injury prediction when considering uncertainty of input parameters. Using numerical models to generate injury prediction functions can better characterize occupant variations, such as sitting posture, than using traffic accident reconstruction. Such obtained functions can provide reasonable estimation on occupant injury risk based on accident information, and we also hope it may benefit vehicle safety improvement and triage protocol in medical treatments of traffic accident victims.
Analysis of finite element models for head injury investigation: reconstruction of four real-world impacts

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that both excessive linear and rotational accelerations are the cause of head injuries. Although the head injury criterion has been beneficial as an indicator of head injury risk, it only considers linear acceleration, so there is a need to consider both types of motion in future safety standards. Advanced models of the head/brain complex have recently been developed to gain a better understanding of head injury biomechanics. While these models have been verified against laboratory experimental data, there is a lack of suitable real-world data available for validation. Hence, using two computer models of the head/brain, the objective of the current study was to reconstruct four real-world crashes with known head injury outcomes in a full-vehicle crash laboratory, simulate head/brain responses using kinematics obtained during these reconstructions, and to compare the results predicted by the models against the actual injuries sustained by the occupant. Cases where the occupant sustained no head injuries (AIS 0) and head injuries of severity AIS 4, AIS 5, and multiple head injuries were selected. Data collected from a 9-accelerometer skull were input into the Wayne State University Head Injury Model (WSUHIM) and the NHTSA Simulated Injury Monitor (SIMon). The results demonstrated that both models were able to predict varying injury severities consistent with the difference in AIS injury levels in the real-world cases. The WSUHIM predicted a slightly higher injury threshold than the SIMon, probably due to the finer mesh and different software used for the simulations, and could also determine regions of the brain which had been injured. With further validation, finite element models can be used to establish an injury criterion for each type of brain injury in the future.

Abstract:Finite element Human Body Models are increasingly becoming vital tools for injury assessment and are expected to play an important role in virtual vehicle safety testing. With the aim of realizing models to study sex-differences seen in the injury- and fatality-risks from epidemiology, we developed models that represent an average female and an average male. The models were developed with an objective to allow tissue-based skeletal injury assessment, and thus non-skeletal organs and joints were defined with simplified characterizations to enhance computational efficiency and robustness. The model lineup comprises female and male representations of (seated) vehicle occupants and (standing) vulnerable road users, enabling the safety assessment of broader segments of the road user population. In addition, a new workflow utilized in the model development is presented. In this workflow, one model (the seated female) served as the base model while all the other models were generated as closely-linked derivative models, differing only in terms of node coordinates and mass distribution. This approach opens new possibilities to develop and maintain further models as part of the model lineup, representing different types of road users to reflect the ongoing transitions in mobility patterns (like bicyclists and e-scooter users). In this paper, we evaluate the kinetic and kinematic responses of the occupant and standing models to blunt impacts, mainly on the torso, in different directions (front, lateral, and back). The front and lateral impacts to the thorax showed responses comparable to the experiments, while the back impact varied with the location of impact (T1 and T8). Abdomen bar impact showed a stiffer load-deflection response at higher intrusions beyond 40 mm, because of simplified representation of internal organs. The lateral shoulder impact responses were also slightly stiffer, presumably from the simplified shoulder joint definition. This paper is the first in a series describing the development and validation of the new Human Body Model lineup, VIVA+. With the inclusion of an average-sized female model as a standard model in the lineup, we seek to foster an equitable injury evaluation in future virtual safety assessments.

Abstract:This study was designed to determine the success of various local anaesthesia techniques as assessed by the presence or absence of pain during restorative procedures performed by senior undergraduate dental students in a pedodontic clinic. Data gathered from the treatment of 151 patients by 43 students recorded the frequency of pain complaints during procedures for which local anaesthesia had been employed. It was found that 73% of the administrations were successful. The proportion of children who complained of pain during the operative procedure was significantly higher in those with a previous history of a painful dental experience.
Preliminary injury risk estimation for occupants involved in frontal crashes by combining computer simulations and real crashes

Abstract:The fatality rate can be dramatically reduced with the help of emergency medical services. The purpose of this study was to establish a computational algorithm to predict the injury severity, so as to improve the timeliness, appropriateness, and efficacy of medical care provided. The computer simulations of full-frontal crashes with rigid wall were carried out using LS-DYNA and MADYMO under different collision speeds, airbag deployment time, and seatbelt wearing condition, in which a total of 84 times simulation was conducted. Then an artificial neural network is adopted to construct relevance between head and chest injuries and the injury risk factors; 37 accident cases with Event Data Recorder data and information on occupant injury were collected to validate the model accuracy through receiver operating characteristic analysis. The results showed that delta-v, seatbelt wearing condition, and airbag deployment time were important factors in the occupant’s head and chest injuries. When delta-v increased, the occupant had significantly higher level of severe injury on the head and chest; there is a significant difference of Head Injury Criterion and Combined Thoracic Index whether the occupant wore seatbelt. When the airbag deployment time was less than 20 ms, the severity of head and chest injuries did not significantly vary with the increase of deployment time. However, when the deployment time exceeded 20 ms, the severity of head and chest injuries significantly increased with increase in deployment time. The validation result of the algorithm showed that area under the curve = 0.747, p < 0.05, indicating a medium level of accuracy, nearly to previous model. The computer simulation and artificial neural network have a great potential for developing injury risk estimation algorithms suitable for Advanced Automatic Crash Notification applications, which could assist in medical decision-making and medical care.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Serious head and cervical spine injuries have been shown to occur mostly independent of one another in pure rollover crashes. In an attempt to define a dynamic rollover crash test protocol that can replicate serious injuries to the head and cervical spine, it is important to understand the conditions that are likely to produce serious injuries to these 2 body regions. The objective of this research is to analyze the effect that impact factors relevant to a rollover crash have on the injury metrics of the head and cervical spine, with a specific interest in the differentiation between independent injuries and those that are predicted to occur concomitantly.METHODS: A series of head impacts was simulated using a detailed finite element model of the human body, the Total HUman Model for Safety (THUMS), in which the impactor velocity, displacement, and direction were varied. The performance of the model was assessed against available experimental tests performed under comparable conditions. Indirect, kinematic-based, and direct, tissue-level, injury metrics were used to assess the likelihood of serious injuries to the head and cervical spine.RESULTS: The performance of the THUMS head and spine in reconstructed experimental impacts compared well to reported values. All impact factors were significantly associated with injury measures for both the head and cervical spine. Increases in impact velocity and displacement resulted in increases in nearly all injury measures, whereas impactor orientation had opposite effects on brain and cervical spine injury metrics. The greatest cervical spine injury measures were recorded in an impact with a 15° anterior orientation. The greatest brain injury measures occurred when the impactor was at its maximum (45°) angle.CONCLUSIONS: The overall kinetic and kinematic response of the THUMS head and cervical spine in reconstructed experiment conditions compare well with reported values, although the occurrence of fractures was overpredicted. The trends in predicted head and cervical spine injury measures were analyzed for 90 simulated impact conditions. Impactor orientation was the only factor that could potentially explain the isolated nature of serious head and spine injuries under rollover crash conditions. The opposing trends of injury measures for the brain and cervical spine indicate that it is unlikely to reproduce the injuries simultaneously in a dynamic rollover test.

Abstract:The capabilities of virtual development of safety systems for occupant safety are increasing with the growth of acceptance, computational power and the usability of tools. Nevertheless, nowadays car safety systems are primarily developed using single statistical representations of humans, like the 5%-ile female or the 50%-ile male body. Hence variation of anthropometry existing in the real-world is only covered to a very limited extent. Recently, several studies developed fast calculating models using methods of rigid body simulation or metamodeling. They suggested investigating rapid or even near-real-time prediction-models for variations of outer parameters, such as airbag characteristics or crash pulse. In contrast, the proposed paper aims to get insight into the impact of human body variation on its crash behavior. This behavior can then be related to a model of a specific percentile. The objective of this approach is to run one simulation with a single representation of a human body and get data for deviated models based on previous simulations. Therefore, the main advantage of this concept is the reduction of the simulation time, needed to get all results of the occupants with different sizes (body mass index, statue, the ratio of sitting height and statue). To test the feasibility of the approach, a 2D rigid body system was created as a simplified model using LS-Dyna and Python. It represents a car's occupant who is restrained by a lap and shoulder belt under the influence of a crash pulse. The joint characteristics were modeled via spring, damper and friction definitions aiming for human-like behavior. To create a database, extensive simulations were carried out by varying the dimensions of body parts, applying a Latin-Hypercube Design Of Experiments scheme. The parameter limits were taken from UMTRI's human shape database. Since the minimal model provides a very limited set of reasonable assessment channels, only kinematic responses like maximum displacement and acceleration of the head and chest were evaluated. The obtained results seem to prove expected correlations between mass and maximum acceleration as well as forward displacement. For the model's training, different combinations of features and targets are tested. For example, the results from simulations with one body measure set are used as feature-vector, while the target-vector is formed by the kinematic characteristics of diverging human representations. After normalizing the data, various regression and machine learning algorithms were applied and their performance evaluated.

Abstract:Anticipating changes to vehicle interiors with future automated driving systems, the automobile industry recently has focused attention on crash response in novel postures with increased seatback recline. Prior research found that this posture may result in greater risk of lumbar spine injury in the event of a frontal crash. This study developed a lumbar spine injury risk function (IRF) that estimated injury risk as a function of simultaneously applied compression force and flexion moment. Force and moment failure data from 40 compression–flexion tests were utilized in a Weibull survival model, including appropriate data censoring. A mechanics-based injury metric was formulated, where lumbar spine compression force and flexion moment were normalized by specimen geometry. Subject age was incorporated as a covariate to further improve model fit. A weighting factor was included to adjust the influence of force and moment, and parameter optimization yielded a value of 0.11. Thus, the normalized compression force component had a greater effect on injury risk than the normalized flexion moment component. Additionally, as force was nominally increased, less moment was required to produce injury for a given age and specimen geometry. The resulting IRF may be utilized to improve occupant safety in the future.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to generate biomechanical corridors from post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) in two different seatback recline angles in 56 km/h sled tests simulating a rear-facing occupant during a frontal vehicle impact. PMHS were placed in a production seat which included an integrated seat belt. To achieve a repeatable configuration, the seat was rigidized in the rearward direction using a reinforcing frame that allowed for adjustability in both seatback recline angle and head restraint position. The frame contained instrumentation to measure occupant loads applied to the head restraint and seatback. To measure PMHS kinematics, the head, spine, pelvis, and lower extremities were instrumented with accelerometers and angular rate sensors. Strain gages were attached to anterior and posterior aspects of the ribs, as well as the mid-shaft of the femora and tibiae, to determine fracture timing. A chestband was installed at the mid sternum to quantify chest deformation. Biomechanical corridors for each body and seat location were generated for each recline angle to provide data for quantitatively evaluating the biofidelity of ATDs and HBMs. Injuries included upper extremity injuries, rib fractures, pelvis fractures, and lower extremity injuries. More injuries were documented in the 45-degree recline case than in the 25-degree recline case. These injuries are likely due to the excessive ramping up and corresponding kinematics of the PMHS. Biomechanical corridors and injury information presented in this study could guide the design of HBMs and ATDs in rigid, reclined, rear-facing seating configurations during a high-speed frontal impact.
