Abstract:The U.S. Department of the Interior recently included uranium (U) on a list of mineral commodities that are considered critical to economic and national security. The uses of U for commercial and residential energy production, defense applications, medical device technologies, and energy generation for space vehicles and satellites are known, but the environmental impacts of uranium extraction are not always well quantified. We conducted a screening-level ecological risk analysis based on exposure to mining-related elements via diets and incidental soil ingestion for terrestrial biota to provide context to chemical characterization and exposures at breccia pipe U mines in northern Arizona. Relative risks, calculated as hazard quotients (HQs), were generally low for all biological receptor models. Our models screened for risk to omnivores and insectivores (HQs>1) but not herbivores and carnivores. Uranium was not the driver of ecological risk; arsenic, cadmium, copper, and zinc were of concern for biota consuming ground-dwelling invertebrates. Invertebrate species composition should be considered when applying these models to other mining locations or future sampling at the breccia pipe mine sites. Dietary concentration thresholds (DCTs) were also calculated to understand food concentrations that may lead to ecological risk. The DCTs indicated that critical concentrations were not approached in our model scenarios, as evident in the very low HQs for most models. The DCTs may be used by natural resource and land managers as well as mine operators to screen or monitor for potential risk to terrestrial receptors as mine sites are developed and remediated in the future.

Abstract:Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. Therefore, it is necessary to further seal up and repair the tailings landfill area.

Abstract:This study investigated the distribution features of uranium-238 (238U), radium-226 (226Ra), thorium-232 (232Th), and potassium-40 (40K) and evaluated the associated environmental radiological hazards of the topsoil and river sediments in the Jinding lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) mine catchment from Southwest China. The activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 24.0 ± 2.29-60.3 ± 5.26 Bq.kg-1, from 32.5 ± 3.95-69.8 ± 3.39 Bq.kg-1, from 15.3 ± 2.24-58.3 ± 4.92 Bq.kg-1, and from 203 ± 10.2-1140 ± 27.4 Bq.kg-1, respectively. The highest activity concentrations for all these radionuclides were primarily found in the mining areas and decreased with increasing distance from the mining sites. The radiological hazard indices, including radium equivalent activity, absorbed gamma dose rate in the air, outdoor annual effective dose equivalent, annual gonadal dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer, revealed that the highest values were observed in the mining area and downstream, specifically in the vicinity of the ore body. These elevated values exceeded the global mean value but remained below the threshold value, suggesting that routine protection measures for Pb-Zn miners during production activities are sufficient. The correlation analysis and cluster analysis revealed strong associations between radionuclides such as 238U, 226Ra, and 232Th, indicating a common source of these radionuclides. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, and 238U/40K varied with distance, suggesting the influence of geological processes and lithological composition on their transport and accumulation. In the mining catchment areas, the variations in these activity ratios increased indicated the impact of limestone material dilution on the levels of 232Th, 40K, and 238U in the upstream region. Moreover, the presence of sulfide minerals in the mining soils contributed to the enrichment of 226Ra and the removal of 238U caused those activity ratios decreased in the mining areas. Therefore, in the Jinding PbZn deposit, the patterns of mining activities and surface runoff processes in the catchment area favored the accumulation of 232Th and 226Ra over 40K and 238U. This study provides the first case study on the geochemical distributions of natural radionuclides in a typical Mississippi Valley-type PbZn mining area and offers fundamental information on radionuclide migration and baseline radiometric data for PbZn deposits worldwide.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Purpose</h3><p class="Para">Pollution from long-lived radionuclides coupled with metals and metalloids (MMs) in uranium mines is globally considered a primary environmental concern. However, research on this topic has been limited to uncovering the ecological and human health risks of this combined pollution in uranium mines.</p><h3 class="Heading">Materials and methods</h3><p class="Para">A total of 120 surface soil samples were collected from 40 sampling sites at a uranium mine in East China. The health hazards of the natural radionuclides were evaluated according to their absorbed dose rate, radium equivalent, hazard indices, annual effective dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer risk. Moreover, the contamination statuses and potential ecological and health risks to children and adults through different MM exposure routes were revealed using the geo-accumulation index (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">I</em><sub>geo</sub>), contamination factor (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">C</em><sub><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">f</em></sub>), pollution loading index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and US EPA health risk assessment models. The interactions between potential ecological and health risks were shown by using the regression fitting method, and the Pearson correlations between the radionuclides and MM were also calculated.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results and discussion</h3><p class="Para">Results showed that only the average activity concentration of the radionuclide <sup>40</sup>K was much higher than the global average, but the health hazard and radiological parameters were within acceptable levels. The average Cd content was 1.6 times the local background value and slightly less than that of grade I in the Chinese soil quality guidelines, which posed potential ecological risks to the study area, although other MMs were present at levels lower than both of the reference values. The I<sub>geo</sub>, <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">C</em><sub><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">f</em></sub>, PLI, and RI results suggested that the contamination around the uranium facilities was more serious than at other sampling sites. Health risk assessments showed that ingestion was the primary route for the metals to enter the human body and threaten human health. The carcinogenic risk from Ni and As to children and adults was the primary health concern in the study area. Moreover, the children were potentially under higher carcinogenic risk than the adults. The correlation analyses between potential ecological and health risks showed that the compatibility between the RI and HIA, HIC, or CRC, respectively, was acceptable when applied in the study area. Strong positive correlations were also found between the <sup>238</sup>U, <sup>232</sup>Th, <sup>226</sup>Ra, <sup>40</sup>K, <sup>137</sup>Cs, Cu, As, and Ni.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">Pollution from long-lived radionuclides and their associated MMs has posed potential ecological risks to the ecosystem and caused human carcinogenic risk in the study area.</p>

Geochemical Controls on Uranium Release from Neutral-pH Rock Drainage Produced by Weathering of Granite, Gneiss, and Schist

Abstract:We investigated geochemical processes controlling uranium release in neutral-pH (pH ≥ 6) rock drainage (NRD) at a prospective gold deposit hosted in granite, schist, and gneiss. Although uranium is not an economic target at this deposit, it is present in the host rock at a median abundance of 3.7 μg/g, i.e., above the average uranium content of the Earth’s crust. Field bin and column waste-rock weathering experiments using gneiss and schist mine waste rock produced circumneutral-pH (7.6 to 8.4) and high-alkalinity (41 to 499 mg/L as CaCO3) drainage, while granite produced drainage with lower pH (pH 4.7 to >8) and lower alkalinity (<10 to 210 mg/L as CaCO3). In all instances, U release was associated with calcium release and formation of weakly sorbing calcium-carbonato-uranyl aqueous complexes. This process accounted for the higher release of uranium from carbonate-bearing gneiss and schist than from granite despite the latter’s higher solid-phase uranium content. In addition, unweathered carbonate-bearing rocks having a higher sulfide-mineral content released more uranium than their oxidized counterparts because sulfuric acid produced during sulfide-mineral oxidation promoted dissolution of carbonate minerals, release of calcium, and formation of calcium-carbonato-uranyl aqueous complexes. Substantial uranium attenuation occurred during a sequencing experiment involving application of uranium-rich gneiss drainage into columns containing Fe-oxide rich schist. Geochemical modeling indicated that uranium attenuation in the sequencing experiment could be explained through surface complexation and that this process is highly sensitive to dissolved calcium concentrations and pCO2 under NRD conditions.

Abstract:Containing only low levels of U-bearing minerals, U ores often have to undergo hydrometallurgical processing for the separation of other minerals. Hydrometallurgical operations, even after being shut down, could pose radiological risk to the ecosystem and human health due to the radionuclide contamination of surrounding environmental media. This study investigated the contamination of radionuclides in the agricultural topsoils downstream of a decommissioned hydrometallurgical U plant in southern China, and assessed the corresponding radiological risk and evaluated its impact on soil microbial communities. The values of geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index indicate that all soil samples were significantly contaminated with U and 226Ra, with their concentrations being 4.4-28.7 times and 4.4-114.8 times higher than the corresponding regional background values, respectively. The mean outdoor annual effective dose (OAED) in the sampling plot next to the drainage ditch downstream of the decommissioned plant was up to 3.9 and 8.2 times higher than the Chinese annual effective dose limit and global average, respectively, which is indicative of unacceptable radiological risk for the local farm workers. Soil microbial composition was obviously impacted by the soil physicochemical properties and radionuclides. Specifically, Cladophialophora, which belongs to the fungal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of total Cd, total U, organic U, residual U, and total K, while Methanosarcina, which belongs to the archaeal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of 226Ra and residual U. Soil pH and total N content were significantly correlated with the abundance of several bacterial genera and the dominant archaeal genus (i.e., Candidatus Nitrocosmicus). These findings demonstrate the existence of potentially significant radiological risk associated with the radionuclides released from historical hydrometallurgical processing of U ores to the surrounding environment, and the need for proper site management and remediation.
Microbial communities associated with uranium in-situ recovery mining process are related to acid mine drainage assemblages

Abstract:A large fraction (47%) of the world's uranium is mined by a technique called "In Situ Recovery" (ISR). This mining technique involves the injection of a leaching fluid (acidic or alkaline) into a uranium-bearing aquifer and the pumping of the resulting solution through cation exchange columns for the recovery of dissolved uranium. The present study reports the in-depth alterations brought to autochthonous microbial communities during acidic ISR activities. Water samples were collected from a uranium roll-front deposit that is part of an ISR mine in operation (Tortkuduk, Kazakhstan). Water samples were obtained at a depth of ca 500 m below ground level from several zones of the Uyuk aquifer following the natural redox zonation inherited from the roll front deposit, including the native mineralized orebody and both upstream and downstream adjacent locations. Samples were collected equally from both the entrance and the exit of the uranium concentration plant. Next-generation sequencing data showed that the redox gradient shaped the community structures, within the anaerobic, reduced, and oligotrophic habitats of the native aquifer zones. Acid injection induced drastic changes in the structures of these communities, with a large decrease in both cell numbers and diversity. Communities present in the acidified (pH values < 2) mining areas exhibited similarities to those present in acid mine drainage, with the dominance of Sulfobacillus sp., Leptospirillum sp. and Acidithiobacillus sp., as well as the archaean Ferroplasma sp. Communities located up- and downstream of the mineralized zone under ISR and affected by acidic fluids were blended with additional facultative anaerobic and acidophilic microorganisms. These mixed biomes may be suitable communities for the natural attenuation of ISR mining-affected subsurface through the reduction of metals and sulfate. Assessing the effect of acidification on the microbial community is critical to evaluating the potential for natural attenuation or active bioremediation strategies.

Abstract:A 56-year-old man was referred to the neurology service by his general practitioner for further management of his migraine. His symptoms had begun 6 years earlier with a fairly sudden onset headache on waking with associated nausea, vomiting, photophobia and neck stiffness. He was admitted to hospital under the general internal physicians; a CT brain scan was normal. He declined a lumbar puncture. He improved over 3 days and was discharged with a presumed diagnosis of viral meningitis. However, shortly afterwards he began to experience stereotyped headaches, which continued over the ensuing 6 years, about three attacks per week, with up to 2 weeks between attacks. He described the attacks as beginning with ‘lights floating’ in front of his eyes; he couldn't clearly recall if this was monocular or not. He also volunteered a description of ‘white patches floating in front of my vision’. These progressed in intensity over 20 min and then improved, always within an hour. This was then consistently followed by an evolving, throbbing headache, generally focused retro-orbitally on the left, frequently extending posteriorly to the vertex and occiput and also on occasion involving the right side. It would worsen over around 30 min to a severe throbbing pain during which he would lie or sit still. There was associated profound nausea, frequently with vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia. Typical headache duration was around 4 h, with a maximum of 7 h. The only triggers he recognised were coitus, when he would get an attack shortly after orgasm, and ‘artificial light’. There were no additional features, in particular any red eye, tearing, rhinorrhoea or nasal stuffiness. Abstract:The microecological effects of plateau uranium mining are still unknown. In this study, we used 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to analyze the impact of plateau uranium mining on the microbial diversity and community structure of tailings soil, tunnel soil, and soil at different depths in an open pit. The results showed that uranium mining significantly reduced soil microbial community richness and diversity indicators, including Chao1, Pielou evenness, and Shannon index (P < 0.05). Uranium mining activities significantly reduced the abundance of RB41, Vicinamidactaceae, and Nitrospira (P < 0.05). Interestingly, the abundance of Thiobacillus, Sphingomonas, and Sulfuriferula significantly increased in the soil samples from various environments and depths during uranium mining (P < 0.05). Beta diversity analysis found that uranium mining resulted in the differentiation of soil microbial communities. Functional enrichment analysis found that uranium mining resulted in the functional enrichment of DNA binding response regulator, DNA helicase, methyl-accepting chemotaxis protein, and Helicase conserved C-terminal domain, whereas cell wall synthesis, nonspecific serine/threonine protein kinase, RNA polymerase sigma-70 factor, and ATP binding cassette transporter were significantly affected by uranium mining (P < 0.05). In addition, we also found that different uranium mining environments and soil depths enriched diverse microbial populations and functions to cope with the environmental pressures that were elicited by uranium mining, including Gaiella, Gemmatimonas, Lysobacter, Pseudomonas, signal transformation histidine kinase, DNA-directed DNA polymerase, and iron complex outer membrane receptor protein functions (P < 0.05). The results have enhanced our understanding of the impact of uranium mining on plateau soil microecological stability and the mechanism of microbial response to uranium mining activities for the first time and aided us in screening microbial strains that can promote the environmental remediation of uranium mining in plateaus.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the potential impact of long-term chronic exposure (69 years) to naturally-occurring radionuclides (RNs) and heavy metals on microbial communities in sediment from a stream flowing through a watershed impacted by an ancient mining site (Rophin, France). Four sediment samples were collected along a radioactivity gradient (for 238 U368 to 1710 Bq.Kg −1 ) characterized for the presence of the bioavailable fractions of radionuclides ( 226 Ra, 210 Po), and trace metal elements (Th, U, As, Pb, Cu, Zn, Fe). Results revealed that the available fraction of contaminants was significant although it varied considerably from one element to another (0 % for As and Th, 5–59 % for U). Nonetheless, microbial communities appeared significantly affected by such chronic exposure to (radio)toxicities. Several microbial functions carried by bacteria and related with carbon and nitrogen cycling have been impaired. The high values of fungal diversity and richness observed with increasing downstream contamination (H′ = 4.4 and Chao1 = 863) suggest that the community had likely shifted toward a more adapted/tolerant one as evidenced, for example, by the presence of the species Thelephora sp. and Tomentella sp. The bacterial composition was also affected by the contaminants with enrichment in Myxococcales, Acidovorax or Nostocales at the most contaminated points. Changes in microbial composition and functional structure were directly related to radionuclide and heavy metal contaminations, but also to organic matter which also significantly affected, directly or indirectly, bacterial and fungal compositions. Although it was not possible to distinguish the specific effects of RNs from heavy metals on microbial communities, it is essential to continue studies considering the available fraction of elements, which is the only one able to interact with microorganisms.

Abstract:Objective: Structural and functional lesion localization in patients with hemispatial neglect. Design: Location and severity of brain damage on CT and SPECT correlated with neglect performance as assessed with a battery of drawings, line bisection, and line and shape cancellation subtests. Patients: Participants included 120 consecutive stroke patients with a single right-hemisphere-damaged lesion on CT who were admitted to the Acute Stroke Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre. Of these, 88 also had a SPECT. Results: On CT, 82 patients with neglect (compared with 38 without neglect) had more extensive damage in the parietal and sensorimotor cortex and white matter fiber bundles, including the posterior-superior longitudinal and inferior-frontal fasciculi (p < 0.05). Parietal and anterior cingulate damage best predicted neglect score using the CT data (p< 0.05), and regional blood flow in the parietal cortex best predicted neglect score using the SPECT data (p < 0.05) after controlling for the influence of age and lesion size on multiple linear regression. Conclusions: Damage in the parietal and anterior cingulate cortex and posterior white matter fiber bundles correlated with hemispatial neglect. Combining structural- and functional-imaging techniques with neurobehavioral analysis can elucidate brain-behavior relationships.

Abstract:The generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) characterized by high acidity and elevated levels of toxic metals primarily results from the oxidation and dissolution of sulfide minerals facilitated by microbial catalysis. Although there has been significant research on microbial diversity and community composition in AMD, as well as the relationship between microbes and heavy metals, there remains a gap in understanding the microbial community structure in uranium-enriched AMD sites. In this paper, water samples with varying levels of uranium pollution were collected from an abandoned stone coal mine in Jiangxi Province, China during summer and winter, respectively. Geochemical and high-throughput sequencing analyses were conducted to characterize spatiotemporal variations in bacterial diversity and community composition along pollution groups. The results indicated that uranium was predominantly concentrated in the AMD of new pits with strong acid production capacity, reaching a peak concentration of 9,370 μg/L. This was accompanied by elevated acidity and concentrations of iron and total phosphorus, which were identified as significant drivers shaping the composition of bacterial communities, rather than fluctuations in seasonal conditions. In an extremely polluted environment (pH < 3), bacterial diversity was lowest, with a predominant presence of acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria (such as Ferrovum ), and a portion of acidophilic heterotrophic bacteria synergistically coexisting. As pollution levels decreased, the microbial community gradually evolved to cohabitation of various pH-neutral heterotrophic species, ultimately reverting back to background level. The pH was the dominant factor determining biogeochemical release of uranium in AMD. Acidophilic and uranium-tolerant bacteria, including Ferrovum , Leptospirillum , Acidiphilium , and Metallibacterium, were identified as playing key roles in this process through mechanisms such as enhancing acid production rate and facilitating organic matter biodegradation.

Abstract:Exposure to heavy metals has been documented in a wide range of wildlife species, but infrequently in ground squirrels. This is despite their tendency to be targets of recreational shooters and the accumulation of lead ammunition in the soil environments they inhabit. We analyzed lead and copper concentrations in liver (nPb = 116, nCu = 101) and femur (nPb = 116, nCu = 116) of Piute ground squirrels (Urocitellus mollis) and in soil (n = 75) on public lands in southwestern Idaho to understand how lead exposure may vary across a gradient of intensities and histories of shooting activity. The liver and femur of squirrels from areas used for recreational shooting for >30 years had elevated lead concentrations relative to areas where shooting was rare or did not occur (our negative control), but as expected, lower than areas used for military target training for >70 years (our positive control). Lead concentration in soils were higher in areas used for military target training than in those used for recreational shooting. There were no differences in copper concentrations in biological or soil samples among sites. These data suggest that ground squirrels can be influenced by the history of lead use in their local environment, and they illustrate another pathway by which human activity can influence toxicant exposure to wildlife.

Abstract:25 families with serologically documented isoimmune neonatal thrombopenia were investigated for ABO-antigens of mother and child. In all cases mother and child were ABO-compatible. It is concluded that feto-maternal ABO-compatibility is a prerequisite for the development of isoimmune neonatal thrombopenia; hence, platelets must have ABO-antigens or be covered by soluble ABO-antigens.

Abstract:The geology of the Western United States (US) is rich in mineral resources that support a diversity of ecosystems and habitats capable of sustaining significant numbers of land-based human populations. The colocation of abundant mineral resources and human populations, however, can result in significant exposures to toxic metals if natural processes or human activities mobilize these metals in the environment. In 2017, the University of New Mexico Metal Exposure and Toxicity Assessment on Tribal Lands in the Southwest (METALS) Superfund Research and Training Center brought together a diverse group of researchers to merge their historical research interests in a team science approach to address environmental and biomedical challenges associated with abandoned mine wastes on tribal lands. The goals of this SRP Center are to understand how site-specific characteristics influence the mobility of metals in the environment and resulting community-level exposures to metal mixtures and to investigate the biological mechanisms that underlie mine-waste metal toxicity, working from population through molecular mechanistic levels, and manipulating doses and mixtures in controlled animal studies. Collectively, this interdisciplinary approach aims to deepen our understanding of how toxicity develops in order to inform interventions that can help to modify those toxic responses. In this chapter, we discuss the transdisciplinary approach upon which the University of New Mexico METALS SRP is built and highlight ongoing environmental and biological research projects that deepen our knowledge of metals exposures and impacts on indigenous communities. The METALS team builds upon knowledge developed from ongoing work across three generations of impacted community members and works closely with indigenous partners to improve our understanding of current and historical resource use and exposure. Through these partnerships, the METALS team has identified key factors affecting environmental mobility of complex metal mixtures found at abandoned uranium mines and continues working to assess the resulting toxicity that can differ based on the combinations of metals in the mixtures.

Abstract:Characterizing the diverse, root-associated fungi in mine wastes can accelerate the development of bioremediation strategies to stabilize heavy metals. Ascomycota fungi are well known for their mutualistic associations with plant roots and, separately, for roles in the accumulation of toxic compounds from the environment, such as heavy metals. We sampled soils and cultured root-associated fungi from blue grama grass ( Bouteloua gracilis ) collected from lands with a history of uranium (U) mining and contrasted against communities in nearby, off-mine sites. Plant root-associated fungal communities from mine sites were lower in taxonomic richness and diversity than root fungi from paired, off-mine sites. We assessed potential functional consequences of unique mine-associated soil microbial communities using plant bioassays, which revealed that plants grown in mine soils in the greenhouse had significantly lower germination, survival, and less total biomass than plants grown in off-mine soils but did not alter allocation patterns to roots versus shoots. We identified candidate culturable root-associated Ascomycota taxa for bioremediation and increased understanding of the biological impacts of heavy metals on microbial communities and plant growth.

Abstract:The microbial oxidation of metal sulfides plays a major role in the formation of acid rock drainage (ARD). We aimed to broadly characterize the ARD at Ely Brook, which drains the Ely Copper Mine Superfund site in Vermont, USA, using metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to assess the metabolic potential and seasonal ecological roles of microorganisms in water and sediment. Using Centrifuge against the NCBI "nt" database, ~25% of reads in sediment and water samples were classified as acid-tolerant Proteobacteria (61 ± 4%) belonging to the genera Pseudomonas (2.6-3.3%), Bradyrhizobium (1.7-4.1%), and Streptomyces (2.9-5.0%). Numerous genes (12%) were differentially expressed between seasons and played significant roles in iron, sulfur, carbon, and nitrogen cycling. The most abundant RNA transcript encoded the multidrug resistance protein Stp, and most expressed KEGG-annotated transcripts were involved in amino acid metabolism. Biosynthetic gene clusters involved in secondary metabolism (BGCs, 449) as well as metal- (133) and antibiotic-resistance (8501) genes were identified across the entire dataset. Several antibiotic and metal resistance genes were colocalized and coexpressed with putative BGCs, providing insight into the protective roles of the molecules BGCs produce. Our study shows that ecological stimuli, such as metal concentrations and seasonal variations, can drive ARD taxa to produce novel bioactive metabolites.

Abstract:There is hardly any study on environmental impacts of uranium exploration and mining development prior to actual mining activities. Rather, the majority of the literature addresses the environmental impacts of either ongoing or decommissioned mines. The objective of the study was to measure the possible radioactive contamination (total uranium and lead) in the local ecosystem surrounding an abandoned uranium development site on indigenous land in Labrador (Canada). Water (brook and ponds), soil/sediments (brook and ponds), plants (growing along the brook and pond shores), and local fish (trout) and clams from bays were collected from mine development site, downstream, and control sites. Uranium and lead mobilization in the local environment appears to be slightly enhanced near the proposed mining site, but rapidly drops downstream. Developing a low-cost, community-based environmental health monitoring tool is an ideal strategy for generating baseline information and further follow-up.
