Abstract:The U.S. Department of the Interior recently included uranium (U) on a list of mineral commodities that are considered critical to economic and national security. The uses of U for commercial and residential energy production, defense applications, medical device technologies, and energy generation for space vehicles and satellites are known, but the environmental impacts of uranium extraction are not always well quantified. We conducted a screening-level ecological risk analysis based on exposure to mining-related elements via diets and incidental soil ingestion for terrestrial biota to provide context to chemical characterization and exposures at breccia pipe U mines in northern Arizona. Relative risks, calculated as hazard quotients (HQs), were generally low for all biological receptor models. Our models screened for risk to omnivores and insectivores (HQs>1) but not herbivores and carnivores. Uranium was not the driver of ecological risk; arsenic, cadmium, copper, and zinc were of concern for biota consuming ground-dwelling invertebrates. Invertebrate species composition should be considered when applying these models to other mining locations or future sampling at the breccia pipe mine sites. Dietary concentration thresholds (DCTs) were also calculated to understand food concentrations that may lead to ecological risk. The DCTs indicated that critical concentrations were not approached in our model scenarios, as evident in the very low HQs for most models. The DCTs may be used by natural resource and land managers as well as mine operators to screen or monitor for potential risk to terrestrial receptors as mine sites are developed and remediated in the future.
Geochemical Distribution and Environmental Risks of Radionuclides in Soils and Sediments Runoff of a Uranium Mining Area in South China

Abstract:Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. Therefore, it is necessary to further seal up and repair the tailings landfill area.

Abstract:The content of radionuclide uranium in the water, soil and rice around the decommissioned uranium mine was analyzed, and the radioactive pollution, distribution characteristics, migration pattern and health risks were evaluated. Its radioactive contamination may have potentially harmful biological effects on the ecosystem and food chain. This paper pays more attention to the pollution of radionuclide 238 U, 235 U around the tailings dam, and makes a comprehensive comparative analysis of the pollution of water, soil and rice at 500 m, 1000 m and even 60 km around the dam. The single factor index method was mainly used to evaluate the pollution degree, and it was found that the water, soil and rice in the area around the uranium field were all polluted to different degrees. Radionuclide uranium pollution is mainly caused by uranium mining, quarry discharge and ecological cycle in the early stage. According to the characteristics of the uranium content in the study area, it is recommended to use the farmland around the tailing dam as a test site to study the radioactivity of different crops, improve wastewater treatment technology, and prevent crops with excessive levels of radioactive elements from entering the market.

Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of the implications of some recent studies performed to characterize uranium products from modern uranium recovery facilities important for worker protection. Assumptions about the solubility (related to the molecular species being produced) of these materials in humans are critical to properly assess radiation dose from intakes, understand chemotoxic implications, and establish protective exposure standards (airborne concentrations, limits on intake, etc.). Recent studies, as well as information in the historical professional literature, were reviewed that address the issue of solubility and related characteristics. These data are important for the design of programs for assessment of both chemical and radiological aspects of worker exposure to the products of modern uranium recovery plants (conventional uranium mills and in situ recovery plants; i.e., ISRs). The data suggest strongly that the oxide form produced by these facilities (and therefore, product solubility) is related to precipitation chemistry and thermal exposure (dryer temperature). Given the peroxide precipitation and low temperature drying methods being used at many modern uranium recovery facilities in the U.S. today, very soluble products are being produced. The dosimetric impacts of these products to the pulmonary system (except perhaps in case of an extreme acute insult) would be small, and any residual pulmonary retention beyond a month or two would most likely be too small to measure by traditional urinalysis sampling or the current state-of-the-art of natural uranium in vivo lung counting techniques. Uranium recovery plants should revisit the adequacy of current bioassay programs in the context of their process and product specifics. Workers potentially exposed to these very soluble yellowcake concentrates should have urine specimens submitted for uranium analysis on an approximately weekly basis, including analysis for the biomarkers associated with potential renal injury [e.g., glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and protein albumen]. Additionally, implications for compliance with current U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations (e.g., 10 CFR20) are discussed. NRC, the applicable Agreement State agencies, and licensees need to recognize the importance of the uranium chemotoxicity versus dose relationship in the interest of worker protection.
Radiological Risk and Impact on Soil Microbial Diversity of Radionuclides in Agricultural Topsoils Downstream of a Decommissioned Hydrometallurgical Uranium Plant

Abstract:Containing only low levels of U-bearing minerals, U ores often have to undergo hydrometallurgical processing for the separation of other minerals. Hydrometallurgical operations, even after being shut down, could pose radiological risk to the ecosystem and human health due to the radionuclide contamination of surrounding environmental media. This study investigated the contamination of radionuclides in the agricultural topsoils downstream of a decommissioned hydrometallurgical U plant in southern China, and assessed the corresponding radiological risk and evaluated its impact on soil microbial communities. The values of geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index indicate that all soil samples were significantly contaminated with U and 226Ra, with their concentrations being 4.4-28.7 times and 4.4-114.8 times higher than the corresponding regional background values, respectively. The mean outdoor annual effective dose (OAED) in the sampling plot next to the drainage ditch downstream of the decommissioned plant was up to 3.9 and 8.2 times higher than the Chinese annual effective dose limit and global average, respectively, which is indicative of unacceptable radiological risk for the local farm workers. Soil microbial composition was obviously impacted by the soil physicochemical properties and radionuclides. Specifically, Cladophialophora, which belongs to the fungal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of total Cd, total U, organic U, residual U, and total K, while Methanosarcina, which belongs to the archaeal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of 226Ra and residual U. Soil pH and total N content were significantly correlated with the abundance of several bacterial genera and the dominant archaeal genus (i.e., Candidatus Nitrocosmicus). These findings demonstrate the existence of potentially significant radiological risk associated with the radionuclides released from historical hydrometallurgical processing of U ores to the surrounding environment, and the need for proper site management and remediation.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Purpose</h3>Pollution from long-lived radionuclides coupled with metals and metalloids (MMs) in uranium mines is globally considered a primary environmental concern. However, research on this topic has been limited to uncovering the ecological and human health risks of this combined pollution in uranium mines.<h3 class="Heading">Materials and methods</h3>A total of 120 surface soil samples were collected from 40 sampling sites at a uranium mine in East China. The health hazards of the natural radionuclides were evaluated according to their absorbed dose rate, radium equivalent, hazard indices, annual effective dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer risk. Moreover, the contamination statuses and potential ecological and health risks to children and adults through different MM exposure routes were revealed using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), pollution loading index (PLI), potential ecological risk index (RI), and US EPA health risk assessment models. The interactions between potential ecological and health risks were shown by using the regression fitting method, and the Pearson correlations between the radionuclides and MM were also calculated.<h3 class="Heading">Results and discussion</h3>Results showed that only the average activity concentration of the radionuclide 40K was much higher than the global average, but the health hazard and radiological parameters were within acceptable levels. The average Cd content was 1.6 times the local background value and slightly less than that of grade I in the Chinese soil quality guidelines, which posed potential ecological risks to the study area, although other MMs were present at levels lower than both of the reference values. The Igeo, Cf, PLI, and RI results suggested that the contamination around the uranium facilities was more serious than at other sampling sites. Health risk assessments showed that ingestion was the primary route for the metals to enter the human body and threaten human health. The carcinogenic risk from Ni and As to children and adults was the primary health concern in the study area. Moreover, the children were potentially under higher carcinogenic risk than the adults. The correlation analyses between potential ecological and health risks showed that the compatibility between the RI and HIA, HIC, or CRC, respectively, was acceptable when applied in the study area. Strong positive correlations were also found between the 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs, Cu, As, and Ni.<h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3>Pollution from long-lived radionuclides and their associated MMs has posed potential ecological risks to the ecosystem and caused human carcinogenic risk in the study area.

Abstract:The consumption of uranium (U) via drinking water is a health concern due to its potential to pose serious health disorders in the human population. Quantification of U levels in potable groundwater samples (N = 166) from the foothill region of Kumaun Himalaya, India, was done using the LED Fluorimeter to assess associated health hazards. The concentration of U was observed to vary between 0.01 and 26.98 μg L −1 . The estimated associated radiological and chemical hazards were observed to pose no considerable health disorders in the human body. The estimated radiation doses were found well below the safe limits. The measured U in groundwater was observed to be strongly correlated with total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity. A comparative analysis of the observed results with other previous studies in northern India is also presented in the paper. The findings of this study will be helpful for future geoscientific studies.

Abstract:Groundwater may contain radioactive substances which can be dangerous to human health. Concentrations of natural radionuclides polonium (Po), thorium (Th), uranium (U), and radium (Ra) isotopes were measured in groundwater samples collected from different locations in the vicinity of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The average values of gross activity concentrations of 210Po, 228Th, 238U, 234U, 226Ra and 228 Ra isotopes were determined to be 1.62 Bq L-1 in shallow groundwater and 5.88 Bq L-1 in deep groundwater, respectively. The total radioactivity in deep groundwater was higher than that in shallow groundwater, and most of the radioactivity in the water is from 226Ra. Furthermore, the effective doses for ingestion of natural radionuclides were about 0.333 mSv y-1 for shallow groundwater and about 1.338 mSv y-1 for deep groundwater samples, which are higher than the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) guideline level (0.1 mSv y-1) for drinking water. Ra dominated the total ingestion dose, contributing 93.06 % and 75.40 % of the total effective doses to the deep and shallow groundwater, respectively. The ingrowth and decay of natural radionuclides suggested that 228Ra/226Ra ratio can be a useful indicator of the source of radioactive contamination. The radioactivity data obtained from the investigated groundwater samples can be used to establish a baseline for radioactivity levels in groundwater around the WIPP site.

Abstract:Radionuclides predominantly contribute to the radiological and chemical doses incurred by human beings. Among numerous radionuclides, uranium stands out as the primary contributor to human exposure, raising concerns on a global scale. The presence of radionuclides in groundwater presents a notable health risk to individuals consuming the water and the surrounding environment. Groundwater samples collected from various locations in the Nawanshahr and Rupnagar districts of Punjab, India, underwent analysis to estimate uranium levels. The concentration range in the studied areas varied from 11.98 to 67 μg l −1 . The study disclosed the retention of uranium in various organs and tissues, including the kidneys, liver, skin, gastrointestinal tract, bones, and urinary bladder. Time-dependent studies indicated a non-saturation behavior of uranium in bones, liver, kidneys, and other soft tissues. Dosimetric models were employed to calculate radiological doses for specific organs and assess chemical toxicity, forming a crucial component of a comprehensive health risk assessment.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:Groundwater contributes to an average of 8 % of the total water source capacity in the Republic of Korea . Hence, private residential households in rural areas in Korea are still using groundwater for drinking without any regular water quality inspection. This can increase the risk of exposure to natural radionuclides like uranium through drinking groundwater. This study investigated the uranium level in drinking groundwater all over the country by analyzing 11,451 samples from private residential drinking groundwater facilities and compared the exposure amount and its associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk based on the geological characteristics of the aquifer. Results yield that although the average hazard quotient (HQ) and excess cancer risk (ECR) of exposure to natural uranium through drinking groundwater were respectively below 1 and 1 × 10 −6 and do not indicate a potential health hazard, significantly high HQ and ECR up to respectively 70 and 4 × 10 −4 in samples where the aquifer is the Jurassic granite observed. Accordingly, regular water quality investigation and onsite treatment methods are required to provide healthy drinking water in such areas.

Abstract:The farmland surface soils effected by uranium tailing were sampled, and the contents of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, Cu, As, Cd, Pb and Zn in the samples were analyzed. The Index of Geoaccumulation and the Potential Ecological Risk Index were employed to evaluate the pollution degree of heavy metals in the soil. The results showed the content of Cd, As, Pb, 238U and 226Ra in the farmland soil exceeded background value. The Index of Geoaccumulation indicated the main polluted factor influencing farmland soil was 226Ra (highly contaminated), the next was 238U and Cd (uncontaminated-moderate contaminated). The potential ecological risk intensity caused by Cu, Zn, Pb and As are all low, and by Cd was moderate contaminated. The potential ecological risk level of integrated heavy metals was low in the study area, and Cd was the main factor. However, the potential ecological risk assessment did not take into account the effects of radionuclide 238U, 232Th, 226Ra, so that and the results of the potential ecological risk were less than that of actual. The metals input in farmland soil are possibly caused by uranium tailings loss and their seepage.

Abstract:A study to assess the uranium exposure due to ingestion of groundwater in Fatehabad district of Haryana has been carried out. Total 49 drinking water samples were collected from different locations of the district. Two groundwater tests taken near the power plant site exceeded the World Health Organization's recommended threshold limit of 30 μg L −1 (WHO in Guidelines for drinking-water quality, 4th edn, World Health Organization, Geneva, pp 1–564., 2011). The average radiological and chemical toxicity risks are below recommended limit. Because of their high organ sensitivity, babies are found to have the highest annual effective dose among the several life stage groups for which it was estimated. Positive correlations were found between the content of uranium in groundwater samples and EC, TDS, salinity, redox potential, and dissolved oxygen whereas a negative connection with pH has been noted. Organ-specific dosage resulting from uranium ingestion has been investigated using the hair compartment model.

Abstract:Natural elements like uranium and its by-products can cause health problems if they are present in groundwater at excessive concentrations. Some industrial activities are known to elevate uranium concentrations, such as uranium mining, phosphate fertilizer production, nuclear power plants, metal processing, and coal combustion. This study gives information about the uranium concentration in groundwater samples collected from distinct water sources like hand pumps and tube wells from a variety of depths and numerous locations in Yamuna Nagar, Near Shivalik Hills, and the Origin of Saraswati River, India. Uranium concentration was measured using the LED fluorimetry technique. The average value of uranium (13.09 μg L −1 ) and annual effective dose (2.18 μSv y −1 ) is found to be within the as reported by WHO (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, World Health Organization, Geneva, 2011) and as reported by AERB (Drinking water specifications in India, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai, 2004) recommended safe limits of 30 μg L −1 and 60 μg L −1 respectively. For the evaluation of health risks associated with groundwater, the chemical toxicity risk and radiological risk of uranium in water are also assessed in this study. The activity of natural radionuclides in some locations is found to be high, which might be due to the local geology, hydrology, and type of industries in that region. The current study will benefit both residents and government agencies regarding uranium exposure to drinking water.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Radiological pollution is a potentially important aspect of water quality. However, relatively few studies have been conducted to document its possible health effects.OBJECTIVE: In this commentary we discuss available epidemiological findings and related data from experimental studies concerning the health effects of naturally radioactive water ingestion.DISCUSSION: Despite modest epidemiological evidence of uranium nephrotoxicity and radium effects on bone, available data are not sufficient to quantify the health effects of naturally occurring radionuclides in water. Methodological limitations (exposure measurement methods, control for confounding, sample size) affect most studies. Power calculations should be conducted before launching new epidemiological studies focusing on late pathological outcomes. Studies based on biomarkers of exposure and adverse effects may be helpful but should involve more specific molecules than biomarkers used in previous studies. Experimental data on ingestion of drinking water are limited to uranium studies, and there is some disagreement between these studies about the nephrotoxicity threshold.CONCLUSION: Further experimental and enhanced epidemiological studies should help to reduce uncertainties resulting from dose estimation to dose-response characterization.

Abstract:In the western U.S., produced water from oil and gas wells discharged to surface water augments downstream supplies used for irrigation and livestock watering. Here we investigate six permitted discharges on three neighboring tributary systems in Wyoming. During 2013-16, we evaluated radium activities of the permitted discharges and the potential for radium accumulation in associated stream sediments. Radium activities of the sediments at the points of discharge ranged from approximately 200-3600 Bq kg-1 with elevated activities above the background of 74 Bq kg-1 over 30 km downstream of one permitted discharge. Sediment as deep as 30 cm near the point of discharge had radium activities elevated above background. X-ray diffraction and targeted sequential extraction of radium in sediments indicate that radium is likely coprecipitated with carbonate and, to a lesser extent, sulfate minerals. PHREEQC modeling predicts radium coprecipitation with aragonite and barite, but over-estimates the latter compared to observations of downstream sediment, where carbonate predominates. Mass-balance calculations indicate over 3 billion Bq of radium activity (226Ra + 228Ra) is discharged each year from five of the discharges, combined, with only 5 percent of the annual load retained in stream sediments within 100 m of the effluent discharges; the remaining 95 percent of the radium is transported farther downstream as sediment-associated and aqueous species.
Estimation of the Annual Effective Dose Due to the Ingestion of 210pb and 210po in Crops from a Site of Coal Mining and Processing in Southwest China

Abstract:The exploitation of mineral resources may cause the environmental release of radionuclides and their introduction in the human trophic chain, affecting public health in the short and long term. A case study of the environmental radiation impact from coal mining and germanium processing was carried out in southwest China. The coal mines contain germanium and uranium and have been exploited for more than 40 years. The farmlands around the site of the coal mining and germanium processing have been contaminated by the solid waste and mine water to some extent since then. Samples of crops were collected from contaminated farmlands in the research area. The research area covers a radius of 5 km, in which there are two coal mines. 210Pb and 210Po were analyzed as the key radionuclides during the monitoring program. The average activity concentrations of 210Pb and 210Po in the crops were 1.38 and 1.32 Bq/kg in cereals, 4.07 and 2.19 Bq/kg in leafy vegetables and 1.63 and 1.32 Bq/kg in root vegetables. The annual effective doses due to the ingestion of 210Pb and 210Po in consumed crops were estimated for adult residents living in the research area. The average annual effective dose was 0.336 mSv/a, the minimum was 0.171 mSv/a and the maximum was 0.948 mSv/a. The results show that the crops grown on contaminated farmland contained an enhanced level of radioactivity concentration. The ingestion doses of local residents in the research area were significantly higher than the average level of 0.112 mSv/a in China, and the world average level of 0.042 mSv/a through 210Pb and 210Po in crop intake, respectively.

A quantitative comparison of the chemo- and radiotoxicity of uranium at different enrichment grades

Abstract:Objective: The radiotoxic effects of uranium are often in the focus of the public fears but the chemical toxic effects of uranium are reported to surpass radiation effects. As there is no uranium isotope that is not radioactive, it is not possible to study chemical effects fully independently from radiation effects. In order to quantitate and compare radio- and chemotoxicity, we determined the median lethal doses of uranium due to its chemical toxicity and calculated the absorbed radiological doses resulting from the ingestion or inhalation of corresponding amounts depending on the isotopic enrichment grade. Committed effective doses over 50 years are related to the stochastic health effects like cancer occurrence and can be converted to a loss of statistical life time (mean loss 0.4 day / mSv). The equivalent doses absorbed within a short time frame permits conclusion on the induction of deterministic effects (e.g. acute radiation sickness). Method: Simulations were based on the biokinetic models of the International Commission for Radioprotection and performed using Integrated Modules for Bioassay Analysis software. Results were compared with the doses given by the calculator of the WISE uranium project. The fractions of the total doses absorbed within different time periods were derived from the respective areas under the activity-time curves in the whole body. Results: The distribution of the total dose on the organs and tissues depends on the invasion pathway and the solubility of the compound. In the case of inhalation, the absorption of the total dose is more protracted than after ingestion. The incorporation of depleted or natural uranium in lethal amounts due to nephrotoxicity does not lead to deterministic radiation effects and is associated with committed effective doses reaching at most about 200 mSv (proposed possible threshold for therapeutic interventions after accidental radionuclide incorporation). The inhalation of low enriched uranium leads to higher effective doses up to 690 mSv, but they are still insufficient to cause acute deterministic effects. Even highly enriched uranium seems not to induce radiation nephropathy, but deterministic effects on the hematopoetic system cannot be excluded in particularly sensitive patients. But the equivalent doses to the lungs associated with the inhalation of poorly soluble compounds of highly enriched uranium are in a range that may induce radiation pneumonitis. Conclusion: Our findings give clear evidence that for depleted and natural uranium chemical toxicity is much more marked than radiotoxicity. However, this conclusion must not be drawn for enriched and in particular highly enriched compounds that besides stochastic effects may even cause deterministic radiation effects.
