Abstract:The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) has 36 spectral bands allocated on four focal plane assemblies (FPAs). Misregistration between bands, namely the band-to-band registration (BBR) shift, has been observed by the on-orbit calibrators. Because of this misregistration, measurements over slightly mismatched areas from different spectral bands can lead to less accurate science data products when they are used together. In this article, the impact caused by the BBR shift on Level 1B (L1B) measurements is assessed. The relative error is fairly large at both ends of a swath in the scan direction because of the bow-tie effect. In the track direction, the impact has a quasi-linear trend. In practice, the impact of misregistration on L1B measurements is less than 0.1%. The estimation of the potential impact on science data products caused by misregistration is performed with a case study. As expected, the impact on science data products is negligible at homogeneous areas but becomes larger at non-homogeneous areas.
MODIS On-Orbit Spatial Characterization Results Using Ground Measurements

Abstract:MODerate resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS), as part of NASA's Earth Observe System (EOS) mission, is widely utilized in diversified scientific research areas. Both Terra and Aqua MODIS observe the earth in sun-synchronous orbit at three nadir spatial resolutions. MODIS has thirty-six bands that are located in four Focal Plane Assembles (FPAs) by wavelength: Visible (VIS), Near-Infrared (NIR), Short-and Middle-wavelength IR (SMIR), and Long wavelength IR (LWIR). MODIS Band-to-Band Registration (BBR) was measured pre-launch at the instrument vendor. Mis-registration exists between bands and FPAs. The spatial characterization could change in storage, at launch, and years on-orbit. In this study, a special ground scene with unique features has been selected as our study area to calculate the spatial registration in both along-scan and along-track for bands 2 - 7 relative to band 1. The results from the earth scene targets have been compared with on-board calibrator, the Spectro-Radiometric Calibration Assembly (SRCA), with good agreement. The measured differences between the SRCA and our ground scene approach are less than 20m on average for VIS/NIR bands both along-scan and along-track. The differences for SMIR bands are 20m along-scan and 0.1 - 0.18 km for along track. The SMIR FPA crosstalk could be a contributor to the difference. For Aqua MODIS instruments, the spatial deviation is very small between the bands located on the same FPA or between VIS and NIR FPAs but is relatively large between warm (VIS and NIR) and cold (SMIR and LWIR) FPAs. The spatial deviation for MODIS/Terra can be ignorable but not for MODIS/Aqua. The results from this study show that the spatial deviation of Aqua MODIS may impact on the science data when multi-band data from both warm and cold FPAs is combined.

Abstract:The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is a key instrument for the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) mission. It was successfully launched onboard the Terra satellite in December 1999 and Aqua satellite in May 2002. MODIS senses the Earth's surface in thirty-six spectral bands which are distributed on four Focal Plane Assemblies (FPAs): Visible (VIS), Near-Infrared (NIR), Short-and Middle-wavelength IR (SMIR), and Long-wavelength IR (LWIR). It was found from sensor pre-launch measurements that Aqua MODIS SMIR/LWIR FPAs had a large misalignment or misregistration relative to the VIS/NIR FPAs in both along-scan and along-track directions. The misregistration of the two FPA groups has remained nearly the same during its on-orbit operation. Consequently this has been a major concern for Aqua MODIS performance since it could affect the quality of MODIS products which utilize bands from both the VIS/NIR and SMIR/LWIR FPAs, for example, the snow index. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of Aqua MODIS FPA-to-FPA or band-to-band misregistration on its snow index (NDSI) derived from measurements made by VIS band 4 and SWIR band 7. Preliminary results show that shifting one pixel (500 m) forward in the along-track direction of band 7 can improve the band-to-band registration between bands 4 and 7 and, therefore, the quality of Aqua MODIS snow mapping. This study will help MODIS data users to understand the potential impact of band-to-band misregistration on MODIS science products, and also be useful for the future sensor design.

Obviously the mis-registration, or the BBR shift, could impact the quality of MODIS science data products that are produced using multiple spectral bands. Because of the mis-registration, measurements over slightly different areas by different spectral bands, when used together, will cause undesired effects, and consequently, lead to less accurate data products. The spectro-radiometric calibration assembly (SRCA), a unique device within the MODIS instrument, is used to track the sensor on-orbit BBR during its entire mission. On-orbit results show that the mis-registration is typically very small for Terra MODIS but is relatively large for Aqua MODIS between the bands on the warm FPAs and that on the cold FPAs. In this paper we present a theoretical sensitivity analysis of the BBR shift characterization and its impact on MODIS data products. A real case is selected to estimate the impact on L1B data and science products using the BBR shift derived from the SRCA. As expected the mis-registration of Aqua MODIS produces small but potentially non-negligible impact on the science products, particularly at the mixed areas with various surface cover types.

Abstract:The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor is currently being operated on both Terra and Aqua spacecrafts. MODIS uses 36 bands arranged in four focal plane assemblies (FPAs)-visible, near infrared, short- and middle-wavelength infrared, and long-wavelength infrared. Misregistrations between spectral bands and FPAs and changes of spatial characterization on-orbit could impact the quality of science data products generated with multiple bands located on different FPAs. In this paper, an approach is presented to compute the MODIS hand-to-hand registration (BBR) using ground measurements. A special ground scene with unique features is selected to calculate the spatial registration along-scan and along-track. The monthly and yearly spatial deviations are calculated for the bands of both Terra an Aqua MODIS except for some ocean bands, cloud bands, and the Aqua MODIS band 6. The comparison with results derived from the spectroradiometric calibration assembly, a device operated on-orbit to track the BBR shift between any two of the spectral bands, generally shows good agreement. The measured differences between these two approaches are typically less than 100 m in the scan direction and 200 m in the track direction. This approach can provide more frequent characterization of the MODIS BBR and is extremely useful for other sensors that do not have an onboard spatial characterization device.

An approach using ground targets, developed and validated in our previous work, is all alternative way for characterizing the MODIS Band-to-Band Registration (BBR), by calculating the centroid location difference of same dark targets observed by each band ill its own field of view. The long term time series of spatial shift, not only for the band but also for the detector, are presented over sensor's operation years (year 2000-2007 for Terra MODIS and year 2002-2007 for Aqua MODIS). With this ground target approach, the spatial performances of both Terra and Aqua MODIS are evaluated. The results show that spatial shifts are small except they are relatively large between bands on the warm FPA and cold FPA of Aqua MODIS. Abstract:MODerate resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) has been operated on-board the Terra spacecraft since December 18, 1999 and Aqua MODIS since May 4, 2002. Both MODIS Relative Solar Bands (RSBs) and Thermal Emissive Bands (TEBs) are calibrated on-orbit by a set of on-board calibrations (OBCs) in radiometric, spatial and spectral modes, providing accurate measurements for scientific researches. The Spectro-Radiometric Calibration Assembly (SRCA) is one of the key OBCs which can be operated at all three calibration modes. When operating in spectral mode, the SRCA is utilized for MODIS On-Orbit Spectral Characterization (MOOSC), monitoring and measuring the center wavelength (CW) shift of each RSB throughout the entire mission. However, some uncertainties in the SRCA measurement may affect the precision of the results due to possible system degradation, mechanical/optical backlash, deformation, and optical performance change.In this study, the instrument background and the algorithm for calculating the CW shift of RSBs using the SRCA measurements are briefly introduced. We analyze or estimate the impact on the final CW value caused by the uncertainties on the Terra MODIS on-orbit spectral characterizations, including cavity temperature variation, limited number of sample points, noise of background, and the variation of beta and theta(off). The results show that the influence is small and the maximum uncertainty is less than 1nm.The lessons we learned in this study provide helpful information and experiences for the sensors which have no on-orbit spectral characterization capability and the useful guidance for the next generation satellite remote sensors.
Results of Modis Band-To-Band Registration Characterization Using On-Orbit Lunar Observations

Abstract:Since launch, lunar observations have been made on a regular basis for both Terra and Aqua MODIS and used in a number of applications for their on-orbit calibration and characterization, including radiometric stability monitoring, band-to-band registration (BBR) characterization, optical leak and electronic cross-talk characterization, and calibration inter-comparisons with others sensors. MODIS has 36 spectral bands, consisting of a total of 490 individual detectors, which are located on four different focal plane assemblies (FPAs). This paper focuses on the use of MODIS lunar observations for its on-orbit BBR characterization in both along-scan and along-track directions. In addition to BBR, study of detector-to-detector registration (DDR) through the use of lunar observations is also discussed. The yearly averaged BBR results developed from MODIS lunar observations are presented in this paper and compared with that derived from its on-board calibrator (OBC). In general, results from different approaches agree well. Results show that on-orbit changes in BBR have been very small for both Terra and Aqua MODIS over their entire missions. It is clearly demonstrated in this paper that the lunar approaches developed and applied to MODIS can be effectively used by other sensors for their on-orbit BBR and DDR characterization.

Abstract:Monitoring environmental changes from space requires extremely well-calibrated observations to achieve the necessary high accuracy and stability. The calibration differences between the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal bands provide a valuable quality assessment of the instrument performance. This letter compares the calibration differences between the Aqua MODIS and NOAA-18 AVHRR bands at 11.0 and 12.0 μm using simultaneous nadir overpass observations obtained in nearly parallel orbits. Impacts due to the relative spectral-response differences between the two sensors are estimated by MODTRAN simulations with real-time atmospheric profiles of temperature, water vapor, atmospheric pressure and ozone, and surface skin temperatures. Results show that the temperature difference after the removal of atmospheric impacts is within 0.30 K (or 0.40% in radiance) across the effective calibration range for the 11.0-μm band/channel. For the 12.0-μm band, the differences are 0.40 K (or 0.50%) at the typical radiance and up to 0.70 K (or 0.90%) close to the maximum radiance, indicating an excellent calibration consistency between MODIS and AVHRR for both bands.

Abstract:As an image-spectrum merging technology, the hyperspectral sensor has become an important part in remote sensing. The spectral calibration results of the hyperspectral sensor measured in the laboratory should be refined when applied to the on-board imaging spectrometer due to variations between the laboratory and actual flight environments. The larger the spectrum offset of the spectral response function (SRF), the worse the retrieval accuracy of the reflective characteristics of the targets. Therefore, an on-board spectral calibration algorithm based on standard diffuse boards with a gradient of reflectivity is proposed in this paper. By constructing the differential function of radiation transfer coefficients, the center wavelength offsets of SRF can be solved. In addition, a back-propagation neural network has been established to eliminate the effect of the atmospheric underlying surface and improve the accuracy of on-board spectral calibration. The three-sigma confidence interval of the on-board spectral precision is $ \pm 0.23\,\,{\rm nm}$±0.23nm (uncertainty $ \lt {0.05}$<0.05 spectral pixels). The algorithm can be applied to a general hyperspectral sensor.

Abstract:The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Aqua satellite, unlike its predecessor Terra MODIS, had always been thought to have been spared from significant deleterious impacts of electronic crosstalk on its imagery. However, recent efforts brought to our attention the presence of striping artifacts in Aqua MODIS images from band 24 ( $4.47~\mu \text{m}$ ), which upon further inspection proved to have a noticeable impact on the quality of the L1B product and to have been present since the beginning of the mission, in 2002. Using images of the moon from scheduled lunar observations, we linked the artifacts with electronic crosstalk contamination of the response of detector 1 of band 24 by signal sent from the detector 10 of band 26 ( $1.375~\mu \text{m}$ ), a neighboring band in the same focal plane assembly. In this letter, we report on these findings, the artifact mitigation strategy adopted by us, and on our success in restoring band 24 detector 1 behavior and image quality.

Lighting Deviation Correction for Integrating-Sphere Multispectral Imaging Systems.

Abstract:In an integrating sphere multispectral imaging system, measurement inconsistency can arise when acquiring the spectral reflectances of samples. This is because the lighting condition can be changed by the measured samples, due to the multiple light reflections inside the integrating sphere. Besides, owing to non-uniform light transmission of the lens and narrow-band filters, the measured reflectance is spatially dependent. To deal with these problems, we propose a correction method that consists of two stages. The first stage employs a white board to correct non-uniformity and a small white patch to correct lighting deviation, both under the assumption of ideal Lambertian reflection. The second stage uses a polynomial regression model to further remove the lighting inconsistency when measuring non-Lambertian samples. The method is evaluated on image data acquired in a real multispectral imaging system. Experimental results illustrate that our method eliminates the measurement inconsistency considerably. This consequently improves the spectral and colorimetric accuracy in color measurement, which is crucial to practical applications.
Advances in utilizing deep convective cloud targets to inter-calibrate geostationary reflective solar band imagers with well calibrated imagers

Abstract:The CERES project utilizes geostationary-derived broadband measurements to infer the regional diurnal flux in between CERES instantaneous measurements to estimate the daily-averaged flux. The geostationary (GEO) imager radiances must be calibrated to the same reference to ensure spatial and temporal consistency of cloud properties and fluxes across the contiguous GEO domains. In order to place all of the GEO visible imagers on the same radiometric scale, the CERES project inter-calibrates the GEO imagers with Aqua-MODIS using multiple independent approaches. The primary inter-calibration approach relies on coincident, ray-matched GEO and MODIS radiance pairs over all-sky tropical ocean scenes (ATO). Another ray-matching approach was recently developed to take advantage of the visible spectral uniformity and near-Lambertian reflectance of deep convective clouds (DCC). The success of the DCC raymatching (DCC-RM) approach has been demonstrated by comparing the calibration with the ATO ray-matching (ATORM) approach for the 0.65-μm GEO and MODIS bands. Now that many of the recently launched GEO imagers have multiple reflective solar band channels, the DCCRM algorithm is being modified to inter-calibrate those channels as well, especially for the SWIR bands. The spectral uniformity of the DCC over the SWIR bands is not uniform, given that the ice particle absorption is a function of wavelength. New Spectral Band Adjustment Factor (SBAF) strategies will need to be developed. DCC-RM is also wellsuited to inter-calibrate historical near-broadband visible GEO imagers. DCC are spectrally flat across the visible spectrum, which reduces the SBAF uncertainty between two ray-matched sensors. Applying the DCC-RM technique on historical GEO imagers is challenging due to the coarser pixel and temporal resolution of the ISCCP B1U formatted dataset. The ATO-RM and DCC-RM calibration methods were applied to multiple visible bands on Himawari-8 using MODIS as the calibration reference. The Aqua-MODIS and Himawari-8 calibration difference was less than 0.4% for wavelengths less than 1 µm and for the Terra-MODIS 0.65-μm channel. Other channel combinations would need further examination to obtain consistent ATO and DCC gain results. The ATO-RM and DCC-RM calibration methods were also applied to GOES-8 in the ISCCP B1U format with NOAA-14 AVHRR as the calibration reference. The GOES-8 ATO and DCC calibration gain difference was within 0.15%. The agreement between ATO and DCC gains provides confidence in both methods.
An Automatic Radiometric Cross-Calibration Method for Wide-Angle Medium-Resolution Multispectral Satellite Sensor Using Landsat Data

Abstract:Radiometric calibration of the medium-resolution satellite data is critical for monitoring and quantifying changes in the Earth's environment and resources. Many medium-resolution satellite sensors have irregular revisits and, sometimes, have a large difference in illumination viewing geometry compared with a reference sensor, posing a great challenge for routine cross-calibration practices. To overcome these issues, this study proposed a cross-calibration method to calibrate medium-resolution multispectral data. The Chinese Gaofen-4 (GF-4) panchromatic and multispectral sensor (PMS) data with large viewing angles were used as the test data, and Landsat-8 operational land imager (OLI) data were used as the reference data. A bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction method was proposed to eliminate the effects of differences in illumination viewing geometry between GF-4 and Landsat-8. The validation using concurrent image shows that the mean relative error (MRE) of cross calibration is less than 6.65%. Validation using ground measurements shows that our calibration results have an improvement of around 14.8% compared with the official released calibration coefficients. The time series cross calibration reveals that, without the requirements of simultaneous nadir observations (SNOs), our calibration activities can be carried out more often in practice. Gradual and continuous radiometric sensor degradation is identified with the monthly updated calibration coefficients, demonstrating the reliability and importance of the timely cross calibration. Besides, the cross-calibration approach does not rely on any specific calibration site, and the difference in illumination viewing geometry can be well considered. Thus, it can be easily adapted and applied to other optical satellite data.

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats have become increasingly important as telecoms engineers strive for improved tolerance to both linear and nonlinear fibre-based transmission impairments. Two important modulation schemes are Duobinary (DB) and Alternate-mark inversion (AMI) [1] where transmission enhancement results from auxiliary phase modulation. As advanced modulation formats displace Return-to-zero On-Off Keying (RZ-OOK), inter-modulation converters will become increasingly important. If the modulation conversion can be performed at high bitrates with a small number of operations per bit, then all-optical techniques may offer lower energy consumption compared to optical-electronic-optical approaches. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate an all-optical system incorporating a pair of hybrid-integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) gates which translate RZ-OOK to RZ-DB or RZ-AMI at 42.6 Gbps. This scheme includes a wavelength conversion to arbitrary output wavelength and has potential for high-level photonic integration, scalability to higher bitrates, and should exhibit regenerative properties [2].

Both MODIS instruments have been working well except that 15 of the 20 detectors in Aqua MODIS band 6 (1.628-1.652 mu m) are either nonfunctional or noisy. The striping in Aqua MODIS band 6 caused by its nonfunctional or noisy detectors has been a serious problem for MODIS snow products, which use band 6 primarily for snow detection. MODIS scientists have been using Aqua MODIS band 7 (2.105-2.155 mu m) instead of band 6 for computing the normalized difference snow index to continue detecting global snow coverage. The main objective of this letter is to retrieve Aqua MODIS band 6 using other bands based on their relationships in Terra MODIS. The band retrieval approach proposed in this letter is also very useful for the next generation of MODIS sensor-the Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) band M10 proxy data generation. Such proxy data can support the VIIRS prelaunch end-to-end testing, postlaunch calibration/validation, and data quality checking.
Radiometric Cross-Calibration of GF-6/WFV Sensor Using MODIS Images With Different BRDF Models

Abstract:The wide field of view (WFV) imaging system of the GaoFen-6 (GF-6) satellite processes four popular spectral bands [blue, green, red, and near-infrared (NIR)] and four new spectral bands (costal, yellow, and two red edges). However, the corresponding reference spectral bands for these eight spectral bands from one reference sensor are insufficient in the cross-calibration process of the WFV; therefore, current cross-calibration methods should be improved. To address this problem, the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), which has high radiometric performance with the aid of an onboard calibration system, is used as a reference sensor, and cross-calibration methods using the top of atmosphere (TOA) and the bottom of atmosphere (BOA) bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) models are developed and compared. The results reveal that the cross-calibration results in eight spectral bands with the BOA BRDF model that can obtain higher consistency with the official calibration coefficients (OCCs) compared with the TOA BRDF model. In addition, after various influencing factors are comprehensively analyzed, the spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) correction in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral bands can be neglected; moreover, by using five spectral bands (blue, green, red, NIR, and SWIR) of the MODIS sensor, the BOA BRDF model and the cubic polynomial interpolation method provide optimal cross-calibration schemes for WFV sensor. The total radiometric cross-calibration uncertainties of the proposed cross-calibration methods with the BOA BRDF model and the TOA BRDF model are less than 5.73% and 6.32%, respectively.

Abstract:This letter presents a novel approach for on-orbit characterization of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) band-to-band registration (BBR) using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) aboard the Terra spacecraft. The spatial resolution of ASTER spectral bands is much higher than that of MODIS, making it feasible to characterize MODIS on-orbit BBR using their simultaneous observations. The ground target selected for on-orbit MODIS BBR characterization in this letter is a water body, which is a uniform scene with high signal contrast relative to its neighbor areas. A key step of this approach is to accurately localize the measurements of each MODIS band in an ASTER measurement plane coordinate (AMPC). The ASTER measurements are first interpolated and aggregated to simulate the measurements of each MODIS band. The best measurement match between ASTER and each MODIS band is obtained when the measurement difference reaches its weighted minimum. The position of each MODIS band in the AMPC is then used to calculate the BBR. The results are compared with those derived from MODIS onboard Spectro-Radiometric Calibration Assembly. They are in good agreement, generally less than 0.1 MODIS pixel. This approach is useful for other sensors without onboard spatial characterization capability.

Abstract:Radiometric calibration is the key to improving quality and quantitative applications of the remote sensor data.A comprehensive calibration and validation experiment of MODIS(Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)visible and near-infrared bands was performed by National Spaceborne Demonstration at the ErLianhot test site in May 2007 in order to validate the veracity of MODIS on-orbit calibration coefficients.The reflectance-based calibration method was used. It was found that the vicarious calibration results were in good agreement with the MODIS on-board calibration results with the deviation less than 6% at the ErLianhot test site.The results showed that the calibration results of both vicarious calibration and on-orbit calibration was highly reliable.
