Abstract:Tooth avulsion is a frequently encountered dental emergency. Children are commonly reported group due to frequent sports activities, trauma, accidents and falls. Prompt emergency management is vital for long term success and to avoid morbidity. The study was aimed to assess the understanding of intern dentists about the emergency handling of avulsed teeth cases as mostly they are first responders among health care personnel. In this study a fourteen-item questionnaire with predefined responses was shared as online Google survey form with intern dentists of 5 different dental teaching hospitals of Islamabad, Pakistan. The duration of the study was 6 months (01 March 2022 to 31 August 2022). The questions were intended to collect personal information and to check level of knowledge and awareness about the management of avulsed tooth among the dental interns. The data was analyzed by statistical methods and is presented through tables and descriptive methods. In total, 152 participants completed the shared questionnaire. The vast majority (71%) of them were aware of the initial management of avulsed teeth, 49% were aware of the ideal transport medium for an avulsed tooth, (43%) were aware of the critical time for successful replantation, while (62%) had knowledge of the multiple factors responsible for the outcome of the tooth replantation. For majority of the statements, female participants had better knowledge as compared to their male counterparts. Statistically significant difference was noted for the statement "<i>If you found the knocked-out tooth and it is dirty what will be your initial approach?</i>" with female participants having better knowledge as compared to the male (<i>p</i> value = 0.005). Based on our study results, generally dental interns are well-informed but still lack expected level of awareness regarding the proper management protocol for avulsed tooth. Hence, improvement is needed regarding the effective handling of avulsed teeth cases.

Abstract:Introduction: Dental trauma has emerged as a significant aspect of dental public health. Traumatized teeth require early and appropriate treatment, which frequently relies on the competence of the dentists, doctors, and nurses who provide the primary care. Aim: To assess the knowledge and attitude of paramedical students about the emergency management of avulsed tooth. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey consisting of 17 questions was designed and circulated among 365 paramedical students (nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy) of Sankalchand Patel University, Visnagar, Gujarat, India, to assess their knowledge and attitude about the emergency management of avulsed tooth. Descriptive statistics were applied by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.0. Results: Total 260 (71.23%, mean age of 23 years) students responded, with 71 students from Physiotherapy, 106 from Nursing and 83 from Pharmacy. A total of. 178 (68.46%) students comprehend the meaning of avulsion. While 193 (74.23%) students had knowledge that tooth re-implantation is possible. Of all the respondents, 192 students (73.84%) were familiar about the benefit of mouth guards for prevention of sports injury and 125 students (48.07%) opined that it is very important to be acquainted with emergency management of dental trauma. Conclusion: Though the paramedical students had good understanding about tooth avulsion, they were unaware about the emergency management of the situation. This warrants the need of incorporating training programmes dedicated to the subject in their curriculum.
Traumatic dental injuries: Knowledge assessment of dentists in the Norwegian Public Dental Service of Vestland

Abstract:Background/Aim Most children and adolescents in Norway attend the Public Dental Service (PDS) where they are treated free‐of‐charge until the age of 19 years. Thus, general dentists employed in the PDS are the primary care providers for traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in young patients. This cross‐sectional study assessed the knowledge of PDS general dentists on the acute management and follow‐up of TDI and its socio‐demographic and attitudinal covariates. Materials and Methods All general dentists employed in the Vestland County PDS, Western Norway, (N = 170) received an online questionnaire. Socio‐demographic and professional profiles of respondents as well as attitudinal indicators were queried. Clinical case scenarios on emergency treatment and further follow‐ups of TDI were used to calculate a dental trauma knowledge score (DTKS; range: 0–21). Mann–Whitney U tests and Kruskal–Wallis tests determined differences between the demographic subgroups. Logistic regressions determined the potential of single factors in explaining the variability in dental trauma knowledge. Results The response rate was 46%. Most participants (60.5%) had not participated in a TDI course after graduation but would like such a course (84.2%). Mean DTKS was 13.82 (±2.6). Knowledge scores differed significantly between age groups (p = .014) and years since graduation (p = .0018). Younger dentists and recently graduated dentists scored highest. Dentists under the age of 30 years scored higher than 30–39‐ and 40–49‐year‐old dentists in these areas: emergency treatment of crown fractures with pulp exposure, identification of complications after avulsion, and management of severe intrusive luxation injury. Conclusion Younger dentists had a higher theoretical knowledge of TDI. Continuing professional development among dentists in the Norwegian PDS is needed for emergency treatment and complication management after TDI.

Assessment of the approach to managing medical emergencies during dental procedures

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to investigate the knowledge of dental interns and post‐graduated doctors regarding dental emergencies and their occurrence in the clinic and examine the doctors' ability to intervene in these emergencies. Methods: Note that, 150 dental interns and 101 post‐graduated doctors were surveyed with sixteen questions regarding their knowledge and experience with syncope, orthostatic hypotension, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, asthma, and anaphylactic shock. Also, post‐graduate doctors answered nine additional questions about their emergency response capabilities. Results: This study found that interns and doctors exhibited similar knowledge about emergencies. Nonetheless, the count of dental interns encountering emergencies is relatively limited. Syncope was the most frequently encountered condition (61.8%). Doctors' increase in years of experience correlated positively with a higher rate of intervention in epilepsy, orthostatic hypotension, and anaphylactic shock (p = 0.001, 0.024, and 0.02, respectively). The ability to check the carotid pulse and to perform intramuscular injections was high in post‐graduated doctors (90.09% and 81.2%, respectively). Discussion: Although interns believe their knowledge about emergencies to be sufficient, their intervention skills may need to be improved due to the low frequency of encounters. After graduation, their inability to intervene adequately during emergencies in the clinic can lead to fatal consequences. The lack of improvement in doctors' knowledge and intervention abilities with experience could be attributed to insufficient training after completing their formal education. To prevent such scenarios, regular training sessions should be provided to interns and doctors, focusing on the emergencies they may encounter.

Abstract:Introduction: Dental trauma is known as main concern for public health and is a prevalent issue among children as it leads to functional, aesthetic, and psychological complications. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of primary school teachers regarding emergency first aid management for tooth avulsion at Agadir. Methods: The study was conducted in 46 randomly selected primary schools in Agadir and included all teachers from these schools. Data collection was carried out through a self-administered questionnaire focusing on teachers' socio-demographic characteristics, understanding of the importance of emergency management and familiarity with emergency procedures. Data analysis was performed using Jamovi Version 2.3.21.0. Results: A total of 202 teachers participated in the study, 61% being female and 39% male. It has been found that 59.4% of the teachers had encountered an avulsed tooth accident at school. Of these, 23.9% indicated they would immediately replant the avulsed tooth, while 76.7% would contact the child's parents. Regarding storage, 6.8% would preserve the avulsed tooth in milk, while 30.1% preferred using paper. No significant differences were found in term of seniority and age groups (p>0.05). Discussion: An educational programs is needed to enhance the management and prognosis of permanent tooth avulsion among children in Morocco.
Dentists' knowledge of dental trauma based on the International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines: An Australian survey

Abstract:Background/Aim Traumatic dental injuries are the result of impact injuries to the teeth and/or soft and hard tissues within and around the vicinity of the oral cavity and pose a very serious public health dilemma. The aim of this study was to appraise the level of knowledge of dentists in Australia regarding the management of traumatic dental injuries based on the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines. Methodology A link to an electronic questionnaire investigating personal and professional information and twelve questions about dental trauma was distributed by email using the Qualtrics Survey Software to ensure anonymity of the respondents, to members of the Australian Dental Association. The respondents were grouped according to demographic characteristics and practice profiles. Data were evaluated by the Student's T test or one‐way ANOVA with post hoc testing using Fisher's least significant difference, with the α level set at 5%. Results A total of 180 complete responses were obtained. The overall mean number of correct answers was 7.55 ± 1.91 from a maximum possible score of twelve. Gender, year of primary dental qualification, dentist identity (general dentist or specialist), area of main practice or region worked by the practitioner did not significantly affect the mean scores. However, increased knowledge of the IADT guidelines was significantly associated with the number of trauma cases treated and the dentists' self‐reported knowledge. Conclusions The overall knowledge of Australian dentists regarding the management of traumatic dental injuries based on the IADT guidelines was generally good but it was also deficient in some areas.

Effect of a single dental health education on the management of permanent avulsed teeth by different groups of professionals

Abstract:Introduction: Tooth avulsion is the complete displacement of a tooth from its socket due to intentional or non-intentional injuries. Treatment in these cases comprises tooth replantation. This accident is very critical as the success of tooth replantation is directly dependent on several factors, such as extra-alveolar period, storage of the tooth until replantation, type of retention employed, time of endodontic intervention, type of drug prescribed, oral hygiene status as well as general health. This trauma commonly occurs during sports practice, school, and leisure activities. The first measures are critical for the prognosis of the avulsed tooth. Several studies report lack of knowledge of the population, educators, sports professionals, and health professionals in the management of tooth avulsion. This study evaluated the influence of education on different groups of professionals, addressing the knowledge and prevention and emergency management of the avulsed tooth. Method: The study was conducted on five different groups of professionals (elementary school teachers, physical education professionals, bank employees, dental doctors, and pediatricians) from the city of Brasília, DF, Brazil. The professionals attended a lecture and were evaluated by a questionnaire applied twice, before and after the lecture. Results: The results of the 479 returned questionnaires were analyzed. The difference between questionnaires before and after the lecture was statistically analyzed by the Wilcoxon test. There was statistically significant change in the performance of professional groups after information was provided (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Education is extremely important to favor the knowledge on prevention and emergency management of an avulsed tooth, and may enhance the prognosis of tooth avulsion.
Fruit and vegetable consumption and risk of COPD: a prospective cohort study of men

Abstract:Background Antioxidants present in fruits and vegetables may protect the lung from oxidative damage and prevent COPD. Aims To determine the association between fruit and vegetable consumption and risk of COPD by smoking status in men. Methods The population-based prospective Cohort of Swedish Men included 44 335 men, aged 45–79 years, with no history of COPD at baseline. Fruit and vegetable consumption was assessed with a self-administered questionnaire. Results During a mean follow-up of 13.2 years, 1918 incident cases of COPD were ascertained. A strong inverse association between total fruit and vegetable consumption and COPD was observed in smokers but not in never-smokers (p-interaction=0.02). The age-standardised incidence rate per 100 000 person-years in the lowest quintile (<2 servings/day) of total fruit and vegetable consumption was 1166 in current smokers and 506 in ex-smokers; among those in the highest quintile (≥5.3 servings/day), 546 and 255 per 100 000 person-years, respectively. The multivariable HR of COPD comparing extreme quintiles of total fruit and vegetable consumption was 0.60 (95% CI 0.47 to 0.76, p-trend <0.0001) in current smokers and 0.66 (95% CI 0.51 to 0.85, p-trend=0.001) in ex-smokers. Each one serving per day increment in total fruit and vegetable consumption decreased risk of COPD significantly by 8% (95% CI 4% to 11%) in current smokers and by 4% (95% CI 0% to 7%) in ex-smokers. Conclusions These results indicate that high consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with reduced COPD incidence in both current and ex-smokers but not in never-smokers.

Abstract:Thirty children ranging from 2 to 17 years of age have undergone 32 gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. A variety of flexible fiberoptic instruments were utilized. The recently available Olympus GIF-P (tip diameter 7.2 mm) appears to be a significant advancement for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Preparation and anesthesia for the cases varied with the age of the child and the nature of the procedure. A definitive diagnosis was made solely by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in 6 of 6 procedures performed for upper gastrointestinal bleeding, 2 of 6 for ulcer-type pain, 0 of 2 for gastric outlet obstruction, 1 of 4 for possible esophagitis, and each procedure performed for single cases of dysphagia, pre-pyloric mass, possible esophageaI varices, and antral deformity in a patient with regional enteritis. A definitive diagnosis was made solely by colonoscopy in 1 of 5 patients with possible inflammatory bowel disease and 0 of 1 patient with lower gastrointestinal bleeding; 4 of 4 polypectomies were successful. Non-diagnostic or normal examinations almost invariably yielded valuable information. There were no significant complications. Our experience suggests that gastrointestinal endoscopy is a safe and valuable procedure which offers promise as a sensitive diagnostic tool in infants and children.
Dental therapists' experience in the immediate management of traumatized teeth

Abstract:The optimal immediate management of traumatized teeth is known to be important for long-term success. One hundred and sixty-seven school dental therapists with General Certificate of Education 'Ordinary' (GCE 'O') level qualification were surveyed on their knowledge and experience on immediate management of dental trauma. The results showed only 41.2% felt comfortable with their present knowledge on the subject. A high proportion of the respondents (94.6%) indicated a need for more knowledge. All therapists concurred on the need to replant a permanent tooth and most (85.1%) agreed that this should be done within 30 min. More than half (54.8%) were not sure of the optimal storage medium for avulsed teeth. Their attitude towards acquiring knowledge in this aspect was good (80.5%) and all would take immediate action to settle appointments for trauma cases.
Knowledge of emergency dental management among a localized sample of athletic trainers

Abstract:Background/Aims Athletic trainers are often the point person when sports‐related traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) occur. The aim of this study was to assess knowledge levels of the management of TDIs among athletic trainers in the Midwest United States, as well as evaluate variables that may influence knowledge levels. Material and Methods A survey was sent to athletic trainers licensed in Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. The survey included 28 multiple‐choice and fill in the blank questions split into three sections. The three sections included background, emergency management of TDIs, and opinion questions. Results Of the participants, 100% recalled receiving medical first aid training. However, only 71% recalled receiving formal training on emergency management of dental injuries. Although 75% were confident in managing a dental injury, over 63% of participants scored less than 70% in the knowledge score section. Majority of the participants (98.4%) reported that they believe training on the management of TDIs is important. Athletic trainers working with contact sports were more likely to have experienced managing TDIs more recently than those working in noncontact sports. Conclusions This study shows the gaps in knowledge among athletic trainers pertaining to management of TDIs and emphasizes the importance of sports community having adequate education on emergency management of such dental injuries.

Knowledge Level and Practice of Primary School Teachers Regarding Traumatic Dental Injuries and Their Emergency Management in Twin Cities

Abstract:Background: Childhood dental trauma frequently occurs at school, with primary school teachers often being the first responders. The immediate response and management by teachers can help mitigate the adverse physical, psychological, and social impacts of dental trauma on children. Despite the significance, there is limited data on the knowledge and practices of primary school teachers regarding the emergency management of dental injuries. Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge level and practices of primary school teachers concerning dental trauma and its emergency management. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in primary schools of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. A sample of 335 primary school teachers was selected using simple random sampling. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from Ivanda et al. (10), which included three sections: demographic information, background and satisfaction with current knowledge, and specific knowledge of dental trauma management. The questionnaire consisted of 14 multiple-choice questions, and knowledge was scored out of 14 points. Scores were categorized as good (11.2-14 points), moderate (8.4-11.1 points), or poor (<8.3 points) based on Bloom's cut-off points. Statistical analyses were conducted using Fisher’s exact test, chi-square test, and independent t-test with a significance threshold of p≤0.05. Results: All participants reported they had not received training for traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). The majority (97.9%) demonstrated poor knowledge, with only 2.1% showing moderate knowledge and none achieving a good knowledge level. There was a statistically significant difference in knowledge between private and public sector teachers (p=0.04), but no significant correlations were found between knowledge scores and age, education level, or teaching experience. Conclusion: Traumatic dental injuries occur frequently in schools, and teachers should be well-equipped to handle such emergencies. The study highlights the insufficient knowledge among primary school teachers regarding dental trauma management. Comprehensive training programs are recommended to improve teachers' preparedness, potentially reducing the physical and psychological impacts of dental trauma on children.
Knowledge of first-aid measures of avulsion and replantation of teeth: an interview of 221 Kuwaiti schoolchildren

Abstract:The prognosis of replantation of an avulsed tooth is determined by which first-aid measures are taken during the first 15 min after avulsion. Knowledge of the correct first-aid measures is therefore crucial to successful replantation. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the present knowledge level of emergency measures for tooth avulsion in Kuwaiti schoolchildren, and (ii) to design and test an interview form with structured standardized questions. A total of 221 Kuwaiti schoolchildren (aged 7-15 years old) were interviewed by professionals using a standardized method to score several areas of knowledge about tooth avulsion and replantation. Earlier experience of first-aid information and subjection to dental trauma was registered. The following fields of knowledge were assessed: general body injury treatment principles, tooth avulsion and replantation principles, avulsed permanent/primary teeth, cleaning of avulsed tooth before replantation, extra alveolar time and storage media. The form for interviewing children proved to be sufficiently structured in performing the interviews and data management. The results of the interviews showed that 30.3% of the children had been exposed to dental trauma in the past. Among children 7-9 years of age, 25% had received information on general first aid as compared with 75% in children 10 years and older. Children 10 years and older, in general, had a high knowledge level of general principles of how to manage injuries to the body. Regardless of age group, there were generally a low knowledge level regarding tooth avulsion, replantation, extra-alveolar time and storage media. We conclude that first-aid knowledge in Kuwaiti schoolchildren is low on avulsion and replantation of teeth despite a high knowledge level of body injuries. The knowledge level of first-aid measures on avulsion and replantation of teeth could be increased through intervention programs.

Abstract:Background: Information on previous traumatic dental injuries is important as they can lead to increased complications during orthodontic treatment and impact the treatment planning and outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of Jordanian orthodontists in orthodontic management of traumatized permanent teeth. Methods: Cross-sectional survey among active registered orthodontists using a questionnaire distributed by hand. Results: The study included 139 orthodontists. Nearly half of orthodontists treated between one to three patients with a history of traumatic dental injuries in the past 3 months. Only 43.2% of the participant asked routinely about history of trauma. A vast discrepancy in times waited before orthodontic movement and in the orthodontic management approach of traumatized teeth was noted. A statistically significant negative relationship between age and knowledge level was found (p = 0.002). A significantly higher level of knowledge was found among participants who had fellowship or board certification than those having the high diploma degree (P-0.032) and also who had treated patients with history of dental trauma in the last 3 months than those who did not (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The knowledge of the surveyed orthodontists in both the recommended observation period before orthodontic treatment and management approaches of traumatized teeth during orthodontic treatment was insufficient. Years of clinical experience significantly affected knowledge, with older participants having lower levels of knowledge. Orthodontists who treated patients with history of dental trauma in the last 3 months had significantly higher knowledge in orthodontic management of traumatized teeth. Orthodontists needs to be aware of the proper timing and strategies on orthodontic management of traumatized permanent teeth to improve the long term prognosis and to reduce further complications during orthodontic treatment through proper management.
Dentists' knowledge about domestic violence against women: A questionnaire-based study

Abstract:Background: Dentists are the first healthcare professionals to identify cases of domestic violence and abuse (DVA) with head and neck injuries. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess dentists' knowledge regarding behavioral and physical findings in female victims of DVA. Material and methods: The study included 558 volunteer dentists who completed a two-part questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and awareness of DVA against women. The first part of the questionnaire inquired about the participants' demographic data, including age, sex, specialty, and the duration of professional practice. The second part assessed 15 statements on a 5-point Likert scale, concerning both behavioral (5/15) and clinical aspects (10/15) of DVA. For each statement, if a minimum of 70% of respondents selected the same option, it was interpreted as being agreed upon by the participants. The level of statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Most of the participants were between the ages of 31 and 40 (29.1%). The study sample was predominantly female (70.4%), with 57.2% of the participants being married. The statement "Abused women tend to avoid eye contact" had the highest agreement rate (70.6%) for the behavioral assessments. However, the participants were mostly "undecided" on the remaining 4 statements in this section. In contrast, the agreement rate for 5 statements related to the clinical assessment of head, neck and intraoral injuries exceeded 70%. One-fifth of the behavioral assessment statements and half of the clinical assessment statements were negatively correlated with the age of the participants (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that dentists can recognize and diagnose DVA symptoms to a certain extent. However, they may encounter difficulties in identifying the suspicious behavior that is indicative of DVA.
The Knowledge and Practices of the Absolute and Relative Dental Implant Contraindications of General Dental Practitioners in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Objectives General dental practitioners (GDPs) are faced with increasing numbers of patients requesting dental implants (DI) to replace missing teeth. Being the first dental professional consulting with the patient, being knowledgeable about DI contraindications (DIC) would support the development of appropriate treatment plans. This study aimed to investigate the GDPs level of knowledge of a number of DICs. The study was done in Riyadh, KSA. Materials and Methods A structured electronic questionnaire was distributed to GDPs who consented to participate. Participants were asked whether certain systemic and local conditions were considered DIC, and whether such DIC were considered absolute or relative. Descriptive statistics, t -tests, or one-way analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression were used for the statistical analysis ( p ≤ 0.05) to assess the association between the sample characteristics and knowledge of DICs. Results Less than half (42%) of the respondents scored 25 to 50%, and only 2% scored 75 to 100%. The highest proportion of correct responses was related to questions regarding old age (74.09%), glycemic categories (68.52%), active chemotherapy (64.07%), and intravenous bisphosphonates (49.86%). The responses were significantly associated with the years of experience, place of graduation, and highest qualification in DI. Based on the linear regression analysis, higher years of practice were associated with less knowledge of DIC (inverse relationship), graduates of Saudi governmental universities scored higher than the other groups of graduates, and holders of a master's degree in DI scored higher compared to holders of other qualifications. In addition, respondents who received lectures and/or laboratory training as part of their undergraduate curriculum had higher scores than the group who did not. Conclusion The level of DIC-related knowledge of the GDPs in Riyadh is generally good but incomplete; it is significantly influenced by the GDPs' years of practice, place of graduation, qualifications, and receiving didactic and laboratory training in the undergraduate programs. More emphasis on DI and DIC is required to improve treatment planning and patient referral.

Abstract:Approximately 50% of children under the age of 15 are victims of various kinds of injuries in the orofacial region. Post-traumatic complications may occur, including crown discolouration, cervical root fracture, ankylosis, root resorption and tooth loss. The most severe complication after dental injury in primary dentition can affect the developing permanent tooth germ, and various consequences may be seen several years later when the permanent tooth erupts. In the permanent dentition, the most severe dental injury affects the surrounding alveolar bone structure and will lead to loss of the tooth. Current literature emphasises that awareness of appropriate triage procedures following dental trauma is unsatisfactory and that delay in treatment is the single most influential factor affecting prognosis. What should a paediatrician know, and more importantly, how should he/she advise parents and caretakers? In an emergency situation such as tooth avulsion, reimplantation within 30 min is the best treatment option at the site of the accident. If reimplantation of the tooth is impossible, milk, saline or even saliva are the preferred transport media. The prognosis for an avulsed tooth depends upon prompt care, which is a determinant factor for successful treatment of the traumatised tooth. In all other dental trauma cases, it is important to refer the child to a paediatric dentist, to follow up the healing process and reduce late post-traumatic complications. With timely interventions and appropriate treatment, the prognosis for healing following most dental injuries is good. In conclusion, it is important that paediatricians are able to inform parents and caretakers about all possible and long-lasting consequences of different dental injuries.
Knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions regarding child abuse and neglect among dentists in Turkey

Abstract:Limited research attention has been paid to Turkish dentists' perceptions of child abuse and neglect (CA/N). This study aimed to examine Turkish dentists' knowledge about, attitudes toward, and perceptions of CA/N. A total of 229 Turkish dentists responded to the self-administered, valid and reliable questionnaire. It consisted of 34 questions that could be classified into the following conceptual categories: a) sociodemographic data, b) knowledge about legal procedures and the orofacial characteristics and findings that are indicative of CA/N, and c) self-efficacy and attitudes toward CA/N. Multivariate analysis of variance was conducted and partial eta squared coefficients were used statistically. Knowledge about legal obligations was associated with occupational experience, highest CA/N education, frequency of child dental treatment. Prior experience with case of suspected CA/N demonstrated the greatest effects. Knowledge about the orofacial characteristics and findings that are indicative of CA/N was associated with prior experience with at least one case of suspected CA/N. The most frequently provided reasons for failure to report cases of suspected CA/N were fear that the child would be harmed. Turkish dentists demonstrated moderate levels of knowledge about their legal obligations and the orofacial characteristics and findings that are indicative of CA/N. Dentists should receive detailed education on CA/N in their undergraduate and postgraduate education. In addition, it is necessary to increase awareness and knowledge about CA/N by providing in-service trainings at the institutions where they work.
An Educational Initiative for Dubai School Nurses and Physical Education Teachers on the Management of Traumatic Dental Injuries

Abstract:The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of school nurses and physical education teachers (SN and PE teachers) about the emergency management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) in schools and to measure the impact of education on their knowledge. A longitudinal prospective study based on a questionnaire survey completed by 68 SN and PE teachers at three time periods (prior to, immediately after, and 3 months-post-educational intervention). Pre- and post t-test and repeated measures (analysis of variance) were used to compare the three group means for the same participants ( p < .05 was considered significant). Significant improvement in the knowledge score among participants was observed between the initial survey to immediately after the educational session and to 3 months after ( p = .047). Significant improvement in the choice of immediately seeking attention after tooth avulsion was observed ( p = .001). The initial knowledge deficiency about the emergency management of TDIs among SN and PE teachers was improved and sustained.
