Abstract:In this paper we describe some recent results on the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We surveyed new and classical metrics on the moduli spaces of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and their geometric properties. We then discussed the Mumford goodness and generalized goodness of various metrics on the moduli spaces and their deformation invariance. By combining with the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric we derive various consequences such that the infinitesimal rigidity, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the log Chern number computations.

Abstract:On Hermitian manifolds, the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. By refining the Bochner formulas for any Hermitian complex vector bundle (and Riemannian real vector bundle) with an arbitrary metric connection over a compact Hermitian manifold, we can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and complex vector bundles by the second Ricci curvature tensors. We will also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:We briefly survey our recent results about the Mumford goodness of several canonical metrics on the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, including the Weil-Petersson metric, the Ricci metric, the Perturbed Ricci metric and the Kahler-Einstein metric. We prove the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric. As applications of these results we deduce certain important results about the L 2 -cohomology groups of the logarithmic tangent bundle over the compactified moduli spaces.

Abstract:In the development of mathematics in the twentieth century, multidimensional manifolds have been one of the central subjects of research. In the last ten years, theoretical physicists have needed some results on infinite-dimensional manifolds, which appear in modeling certain problems; for example, a system with an infinite number of particles in statistical mechanics. Some of these results could be translated to finite-dimensional manifolds. Perhaps some day even old classical problems can be solved by applying some of these infinite-dimensional theories directly to universal moduli space. A second area of important future development is the study of singularities, which occur practically in every field. For instance, the algebraic theory of singularities has been developed in the last forty years, but the application of this theory to natural systems related to partial differential equations will be more than welcome. Finally, modern computers generate many interesting questions. It is conceivable that deep mathematics may arise from understanding computer calculations in the future.

Abstract:This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical geometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a "true" geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Such a basic understanding of the status of geometry around 1870 enables one to study the geometric works of Sophus Lie and Felix Klein at the beginning of their career in the appropriate historical perspective.

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. Abstract:I recall that about twenty years ago, Peter Li told me that the National Science Foundation has a program called geometric analysis. I was curious about what that was until Peter explained to me. I believe this is a real contribution of NSF to mathematics, on top of the funding that we have enjoyed all these years. Just like any subject in mathematics, the roots of geometric analysis dates to ancient times and also to the not so ancient contributions of many modern mathematicians. And as many scientists like to say, we stood on the shoulders of giants, who laid down the basic tools and concepts and made important progress. But I believe only starting in the 1970s, did we see a systematic development based on analysis and nonlinear differential equations to solve important problems in geometry and topology. This development is vigorous and it has had strong feedback to the development of differential equations and analysis in general. I remember that as a graduate student, I read a great deal of Russian literature on surface theory based on the Alexandrov school and works of Pogorelov. I also noticed the great works of Morrey, Nash, Nirenberg, de Giorgi and others. But they were more interested in analysis than geometry. Problems in geometry are good testing grounds for developments of partial differential equations. This is still so. But we started to develop into other directions. When I entered the subject, it seemed to me that Riemannian geometry could benefit from the introduction of techniques beyond the geodesic methods which were almost exclusively used at that time. Indeed, the great power of the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem had shown prevailing influence in the subject of geometry, topology and algebraic geometry already. Abstract:. In this note, we give a brief exposition on the recent progress on the geometry and topology of compact complex manifolds with RC-positive tangent bundles, with particular focus on several open problems proposed by S.-T. Yau around 40 years ago. The uniformization theorem demonstrates satis-factorily that: every simply connected Riemann sur-face is isomorphic to one of three Riemann surfaces: the open unit disk D , the complex plane C , or the Riemann sphere S 2 . However, the geometry and topology of higher dimensional complex manifolds are far more complicated, and the classifica-tions of such manifolds are still challenging tasks in modern geometry. As analogous to the geometric properties of three model Riemann surfaces, many terminologies are developed to investigate higher dimensional complex manifolds. For instances, a vari-ety of curvature notions are used in differential geometry, e.g., holomorphic bisectional curvature, holomorphic sectional curvature, Ricci curvature and etc. With the help of the intersection theory, algebraic geometers created many algebraic concepts to de-scribe the geometry of algebraic manifolds, such as ampleness, nefness and so on. On the other hand, it is natural to investigate complex manifolds by ana-lyzing model Riemann surfaces contained in them. The category of algebraic manifolds containing rational curves ( CP 1 ∼ = S 2 ) plays a significant role in alge-* braic geometry, and complex manifolds without entire curves C —so called hyperbolic manifolds—are fundamental in analytical geometry.

Abstract:We survey the theory of complex manifolds that are related to Riemann surface, Hodge theory, Chern class, Kodaira embedding and Hirzebruch–Riemann–Roch, and some modern development of uniformization theorems, Kähler–Einstein metric and the theory of Donaldson–Uhlenbeck–Yau on Hermitian Yang–Mills connections. We emphasize mathematical ideas related to physics. At the end, we identify possible future research directions and raise some important open questions.

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between geometry and topology is a central theme in Riemannian geometry. We establish two results on the fundamental groups of open (complete and noncompact) $n$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth. First, we show that the fundamental group of such a manifold contains a subgroup $\mathbb{Z}^k$ of finite index, where $0\le k\le n-1$. Second, we prove that if the Ricci curvature is positive everywhere, then the fundamental group is finite. The proofs are based on an analysis of the equivariant asymptotic geometry of successive covering spaces and a plane/halfplane rigidity result for RCD spaces.

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:The present document is the draft of a book which presents an introduction to infinite-dimensional differential geometry beyond Banach manifolds. As is well known the usual calculus breaks down in this setting. Hence, we replace it by the more general Bastiani calculus which is built using directional derivatives. We then focus on two main areas of infinite-dimensional geometry: 1. infinite-dimensional Lie groups, and 2. weak Riemannian geometry. Both topics are developed and connected to manifolds of (smooth) mappings. These manifolds are studied in detail to construct important examples such as diffeomorphism groups, loop groups and Riemannian metrics for shape analysis. Manifolds of mappings are prime examples for surprising connections between finite and infinite-dimensional geometry. However, also pathologies occurring in infinite-dimensions will be highlighted in many examples. The geometric techniques developed will then be showcased in modern applications of geometry such as geometric hydrodynamics, higher geometry in the guise of Lie groupoids and rough path theory.
